Ms Mathewson was handed the crown ahead of three other finalists at this year’s competition in Christchurch and will go on to compete for the national title in May. “I was a bit shocked at winning and it took some time to sink in,” Lauren said. The former Darfield High School student said she had entered the competition as a ‘bit of fun’ and to explore her Irish heritage. “Some of the other girls in the competition were born in Ireland but my links with the country go a bit further back and come from the Kilkenny area.” Lauren is currently head of the farmyard section at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, a job she took on after graduating from Lincoln University with qualifications in agriculture and farm management. Six years ago Lauren followed in her father’s footsteps and joined the Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade. “As soon as I turned 16, which is the minimum age requirement, I joined up. It was something I had always wanted to do.” After getting over the shock of her win Lauren is now looking forward to representing Canterbury in the Rose of Tralee national final which will be held in Christchurch on p Kirwee’s Lauren Mathewson feeding the lemurs at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve May 31. ¢

The numbers of people immigrating to New Zealand and choosing to live in Selwyn has steadily increased over the last five years according to Selwyn District Council Ceo David Ward.

The Selwyn District Council has won a New Zealand Planning Institute award for its work on developing plans for Rolleston’s future development.

In 2009, 55 people took part in citizenship ceremonies in Selwyn. That number has been superseded in just the first two months of 2014 with 63 people already receiving New Zealand citizenship. In 2013, 176 people became citizens in Selwyn. “All indications are that numbers will continue to increase, as people move to the area for work related opportunities, and in doing so realise the personal benefits of raising their families in the district,” Mr Ward said. p Sue Atherton and her family have chosen to make Selwyn their home in New Zealand because of the ‘go-ahead’ “Typically we would attitude of the people who live and work in the district. receive candidates from She is a proud supporter of the Crusaders and All Blacks over half a dozen countries rugby teams at each ceremony. The council won a Best Practice Award in the Strategic Planning and Guidance category for the ‘Rolleston — Your Town … Your Future’ project. The project is made up of two separate master plans for the town centre and Foster Recreation Park. New Zealand Planning Institute judges said they decided to recognise the Rolleston project as both projects had achieved a number of best practice outcomes in planning, recreational planning and urban design. “It is an excellent example of a collaborative approach to visioning and forward planning, bringing together a range of disciplines and a number of diverse (and conflicting) public and private sector aspirations,” the judges said. Council strategic policy planner Cameron Wood said it was a fantastic achievement by all council staff involved to pick up this national award. “It is the fifth time in four years council has been recognised with an award like this and it recognises the hard work staff has been putting in over the last few years.” Mr Wood said the Rolleston project involved a cross organisation council team involving staff from the planning, open spaces, roading and community services along with staff from planning firm Boffa Miskell and

recreational and leisure consultants Global Leisure. “Two community steering groups were also established at the start of the projects and have overseen the project development.” Council received 372 submissions on the two master plans which are expected to be adopted later this month. ¢

Making the rural school journey safer u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Road safety around our district, particularly near our rural schools, has been an issue I have been strongly involved in since I became the MP for Selwyn in 2008. For this reason I am keen to make our rural communities aware that the Government has published a new guide aimed at improving road safety around rural schools. The guide is called Safer Journeys for Rural Schools and it is part of the rural schools’ road safety programme, which is a series of initiatives aimed at improving safety outside rural schools. This is a further milestone in the government’s implementation of the Safer Journeys strategy, which aims to significantly reduce deaths and serious injuries from road crashes by 2020. We all share responsibility for improving road safety and this new guide will be a great resource for rural communities who want to ensure their journeys to and from school are as safe as possible. Last year’s record low road toll shows we’re heading in the right

direction, but there is always more work to do. Further reducing the risk of death and serious injury for rural school children is a significant step. The publication of the Safer Journeys rural schools’ guide is the second of a three step programme. The Government has already introduced a trial of variable speed limit signs to reduce the speed of traffic past schools where there is an identified pedestrian safety risk. This trial involves more than 20 schools and ends in July this year. The final step of the programme will use the rural schools’ guide to assess the degree of road safety risk around all rural schools and identify actions needed to improve safety at the highest risk schools. The guide is available at www.nzta. govt.nz/resources/safer-journeysfor-schools. ¢

“Some really good written comments were received on how the design could be further improved. This feedback will be considered as the conceptual design is developed.” Council has set aside $29,000 for this financial year to develop a feasibility and funding plan and to progress conceptual plans for the facility. “The project group will report back to council on the findings of community consultation and work on a funding plan for the detailed design and construction phases of the project,” Mr Hayes said. “Further consultation on this project will be undertaken as part of the 2015 Long Term Plan process in April 2015.” At this week’s council meeting councillors will debate a staff report which recommends a further $200,000 from the West Melton Reserves Development Contribution account be set aside for detailed design work on the sports and leisure centre. ¢

p Mayor Kelvin Coe with the new Selwyn District Council information guide

The 30 page booklet is an A-Z guide of council facilities and services. It includes information on how to access commonly used services, links to online resources and council and emergency contacts. “We recognise that Selwyn has been growing very quickly which makes it difficult for residents to be fully informed about all the council services that are available, so we have produced this guide,” said Selwyn mayor Kelvin Coe.

www.survus.co.nz

The Selwyn District Council had signalled its intention for a multi-use sports and leisure centre to be built at a cost of around $3.5 million on the West Melton Domain in its 2012–22 long term plan. Late last year the council set up a steering group for the project and embarked on public consultation for the proposal including a survey and two drop-in sessions. While the response to the 1,100 submission forms sent out by the council was poor, only 195 or 17.7% were returned, the response was overwhelmingly in favour of the project proceeding. Just on 81% of survey respondents supported the proposal for the new multi-purpose facility and 82% were prepared to contribute to the facility through their rates. Council landscape architect Derek Hayes said the survey showed that among the most common reasons for not supporting the project was the potential for rate increases and concern over location and access due to separation of the residential area and the proposed facility by SH73. “The working party acknowledges these concerns and although the location of the facility cannot change, the group will look at how access can be improved,” Mr Hayes said.

He said the council provided a wide range of services to the 45,000 residents living in Selwyn — from libraries, to water and roads, parks, civil defence, rubbish and recycling collection and animal control. Residents living in Selwyn can expect to receive their guide between April 12 and 16. Extra copies will also be available at council libraries and service centres and the guide can also be read online at www.selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

easter is celebrated in a number of countries around the world, each with their own unique and meaningful observances. In Italy at Easter there are solemn processions where statues of Jesus and Mary are carried through the streets of many towns and cities on the Friday and Saturday. Easter Sunday is a time of celebration. In Florence this is done in spectacular

style with the tradition of Scoppio del carro (explosion of the cart). which lasts around 20 minutes. Another place where fires are a feature of Easter celebrations is in Cyprus where it is customary for people to light great fires made up of scraps of wood. Competition between rival neighbouring groups has at times seen this get out of hand as people fight over wood and the wish to have the biggest fire. A more controversial Easter Monday practice in Czech Republic involves boys pouring water over the girls and whipping them with branches, usually made from

willow rods. Willows are the first tree to show signs of life in the spring, and these are said to give fertility to the girl. In New Zealand our Easter traditions seem a little tamer in contrast. Traditionally Kiwis of Christian faith often attend a church service on Good Friday and may also practise fasting and abstinence on this day as they reflect on Christ’s death. Sunday is a celebratory day to remember Christ’s resurrection. Easter eggs and meals with family and friends are the usual way to celebrate this. ¢

New principal for Darfield Primary School

u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Recently appointed Darfield Primary School principal Aaron Richards will take on his new position at the beginning of term two. Mr Richards talked to The Record about his teaching career, what he brings to the job and what he’s looking forward to. What is your teaching/principal career to date? I started my teaching career teaching in a number of primary schools in North Canterbury. In 2003 I took up the principal position at Kirwee Model School. During the five years at Kirwee Model School I saw the school grow from 3 to 6 teachers. In 2008 I moved to St Patrick’s School in Christchurch. During this time I have also been seconded on to the New Zealand Teachers Council’s Teacher Training Review Panel and have been a director for Life Education Trust Canterbury. Why did you apply for the principal job at Darfield? While living and working at Kirwee, my wife and I fell in love with the Selwyn and Malvern area. Instead of moving to Christchurch, we decided to buy a lifestyle block down the road in West Melton. As a result Darfield remains a hub for my family as we regularly visit the township and attend community events. My time working in the city has only confirmed that I love working and living in a rural community. What do you hope to bring to the school? I will bring passion, energy and experience to Darfield Primary School. Over recent years, I have worked with a number of international experts and innovative educators around the concept of modern teaching practice. I intend to use this expertise to work with the staff in developing a 21st century learning environment that enables all students to reach their potential. This cannot be done in isolation, so I also look forward to developing closer relationships with Darfield High School and our neighbouring primary schools.

Cushions, throws, table lamps, bric-a-brac, coasters, art works, and other small furnishings that feature this colour and will tie the décor together to create a unified effect. If the budget allows then curtains, a large mat and a wall with sumptuous wallpaper will add richness. This does however tie you into a colour scheme more permanently unless you are willing to paint over your precious wallpaper at a later date. Be warned about over indulging in your favourite colour. Too many pieces will ensure that your dream colour will soon be your worst nightmare. It’s better to have small splashes interspersed with other complimentary colours. As well as a key colour you can also bring a theme to your room. Perhaps you adore the beach, so your neutralised room can then be accented with items with a nautical theme, such as driftwood,

p unusual and novelty objects add a talking point to your home and are best shown off with a neutral background

navy and white striped pillows with an embossed anchor and thick white cotton rope edging. An artwork with a lighthouse, or even a strategically placed piece of boating equipment. An enlarged favourite print from a recent beach excursion will help fill the rooms with authentic memories of life by the ocean. In Selwyn we are surrounded by rivers, mountains and in summer bright fields filled with ripening crops. Why not bring this theme inside when you select your colours and objet d’art? The idea with first neutralising and then accenting your room with colour and theme is that when you tire of your choices you can pack the objects away, return to your neutral base, and start all over again. You may have several themes for the one room, changing with the seasons, and returning to old favourites at a certain time of year. The trend is then, that there is no set trend. Your room is yours and is changeable and evolving with you over time. ¢

Wrapping your house for winter warmth u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Insulating your house helps you have a home that is warm, healthy and comfortable during the cool winter months and can also reduce condensation. Insulation works at its best when applied in a way that ensures good coverage of your home. Valuable heat can escape through breaks or gaps in the insulating material. Key areas for insulation are ceilings, walls, under floors and windows. There are different types of insulation but as a general rule, the thicker the material the less heat will be lost. In New Zealand the most common insulation types include rolls, batts, blankets, loose fill, rigid foam and foamin-place insulation. Some of the more common insulation materials used are wool, glass wool, rock wool, polyester blanket and polystyrene sheet. To help with heat lost through windows, it is recommended you install double glazing which is now mandatory on new builds. There are some important factors you should consider when choosing your insulation type, such as — is the product fire resistant? Is it resistant to vermin? How mould proof is it, and how will it perform over time? How easy is it to fit and how toxic is it?

COUNTRY ROADS ARE NOT MOTORWAYS.

Canterbury Road Safety

Insulation for low-income households In 2013 the New Zealand government allocated money to help low-income householders to insulate their homes, especially homes where children and elderly live and those with high health risks.

There are obvious differences between motorways and country roads. Country roads are narrower, have more corners, less road markings and have rural activities happening on and around them. While both may have a 100km speed limit, we need to drive at speeds that reflect our surroundings.

For further information about the scheme go to, www.energywise. govt.nz/funding-and-programmes/ insulation-programme, which provides a list of service providers. Information for this article was provided by www. consumerbuild.org.nz ¢

Let us know what you think or even share a local stretch of road you drive on at a lower speed, just because of the way it is.

If you’re building, renovating or fitting insulation retrospectively ensure you take the time to research your options so that you get the right product for you. So what is insulation? Insulation is a product which acts as a barrier that reduces the heat lost from inside your home. According to Consumer New Zealand older uninsulated homes typically lose 30–35% of heat through the roof, 18–25% through walls, 6–9% air leakage, 21–31% from windows and 12–14% through the floor. This can be considerably reduced using different forms of insulation. Insulation has a rating value which tells the consumer how resistant it is to the flow of heat. This is called an R-value. The higher the R-value rating the more effective the insulation is in resisting heat transfer. In New Zealand, R-values in new homes for walls and roofs are usually between R1.9 and 3.3. Paying for a higher R-valued insulation product will cost you more at the initial outlay but will save you money in the long run.

Worldwide recognition for decorative cake u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Being voted number one on an international culinary website was a dream come true for Rolleston cake maker and decorator Sue Atherton. Sue entered a photo of her cake which included an edible cup, saucer and spoon onto cakesdecor.com which attracts an audience of over 17,000 cake decorators who vote on their favourite design. “To get into the top 15 is a huge accolade, but to get number one — I was over the moon,” Sue said. Sue is a self-taught cake maker and decorator who decided to change from a career as a fraud investigator after the birth of her second child. Sue’s cake making career started after making a cake for her daughter’s second birthday. “Friends saw it and then they wanted one, so I started doing a few for friends and family.” Before she knew it Sue’s cakes were in demand and a small business was beginning to form. She sought advice from Environmental Health and walled off a bay of the family’s three car garage to create a second kitchen in the house which is dedicated to her cake business, named Fantail Cakes.

“I love making birthday cakes. It is brilliant when a client comes to you with a few key ideas and asks if you can incorporate them into a cake or gives you free reign to be creative and surprise them.” The business has grown predominantly by word of mouth, and now Sue has clients from Timaru to Nelson. “I had one cake where the wife of the birthday boy wanted to incorporate his first ship from the 1970s, his job as a fisherman, and his first dog onto his cake. “In the end we did a cake based on the ocean, with a fondant replica boat with a little icing figure of him and his dog. Such a personal and significant cake and great fun to make. “When children are involved in designing their own cake they get some really unusual ideas. “I had a little girl who wanted a mermaid cake, but the mermaid had to be in a dress, in the ocean and surrounded by strawberries. “It looked amazing and she was so happy with it.”

p A replica of the edible cup, saucer and teaspoon which adorned Sue Atherton’s number one placed cake on international cake decorating website, cakedecor.com

Sue says the future is looking bright with some interesting plans on the horizon including hosting some children’s cake decorating classes for the Selwyn parenting network kids’ club. “I want to build on my skills, and really take my cakes up to the next level, making gravity defying cakes, and

Home of the week

Prepare to be lost

When size does matter this Kirwee property is larger than large … a quality home in an established mature setting. With two large living areas this property also has a conservatory with a purpose built water feature and is a great place to enjoy breakfast, admire the mature garden setting from there, or have a peaceful afternoon gin and tonic with friends. Each living space has the ability to open out or be closed off, with plenty of heating and cooling options provided in each area, with a log burner, gas fire and heat pumps. A large study is well positioned within the home, close to the kitchen and dining area as well as one of the living areas — perfect if you have children on the computer. The designer kitchen is fitted with soft touch drawers and cupboards and quality appliances, double wall oven and gas hobs, as well as a walk-in pantry with plenty of storage. Granite bench tops are a feature. Heating will never be an issue with this home with heat pumps and heat transfer system, log burner, a gas log fire, and it is double glazed throughout — including the conservatory.

The double internal access garaging has plenty of storage space and plenty of off — road parking. An additional double external block-build garage is also on the property which is currently being used as a hobby/craft area. The space could equally be used as another bedroom or granny flat or even as a space to work from home. No more packing up and putting away your projects — or need for quiet from a busy family — this space is unique. There are four large bedrooms, all with fitted wardrobes. The master bathroom comes with spa bath, toilet, shower and double vanity while the main bathroom has a separate bath, shower and vanity. Elsewhere in the house there is a separate laundry and separate toilet and the home is filled with an extensive variety of storage spaces. This is a quality home set in a mature setting and could be a match made in heaven for the new owner.
