To preserve the history of the Whitecliffs line which ran from 1875 to the 1960s, the Darfield Township Committee has laid a section of railway track and relocated the old railway station from Homebush to Westview Park in Darfield. “The tracks were pulled up 50 years ago. The new piece of track is placed exactly where the old one was, facing towards Whitecliffs,” Don Chambers of

the Darfield Township Committee said. “When we dug up the area for the track we found old sleepers. The remnants of the old track were still there. We knew we’d found the right spot.” A points lever has been placed near the new piece of track, sourced from the Russel Williams Museum in Darfield. “The points lever signifies that it was a branch line, off the main trunk line,” Mr Chambers said.

PROVIDING WATER SUPPLY SOLUTIONS TO THE CANTERBURY REGION FOR OVER 25 YEARS

The Homebush Railway Station built in 1875 was recently relocated next to the tracks. Mr Chambers said it was one of five identical stations built in Christchurch at the same time to go along the line. Other stations along the historic line were located at Hawkins, Coalgate, South Malvern and Whitecliffs. continued on page 4 …

During World War I Lt Douglas Deans sent a pocket full of acorns home to his mother who lived on the Deans’ property in the Malvern Hills, according to Hazel Wheeler of the Sheffield WW1 Memorial Committee. One of those acorns was used to plant the oak tree which stands next to the Bridge of Remembrance in Christchurch. Ms Wheeler said Sheffield resident Rev Hugh Patterson collected up a number of acorns which fell from that tree. “Hugh got around 300 acorns from the tree and grew them and one of those was planted to mark the 100 year commemoration of the beginning of the First World War.” The tree was planted near the Sheffield War Memorial in the middle of the township. Ms Wheeler said children from Sheffield Primary School walked to the memorial, led by Andrea Barnhill from Darfield who played the bagpipes. “We wanted to show respect and to

Celebrating rural history

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

 by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Help wanted

A celebration of farming life and machinery in Selwyn has been added to the calendar of events marking the birth of West Melton 150 years ago.

Dear Editor, As I am attempting to construct an accurate model of the original settlers cottage built by West Melton founder Henry Trickett as it might have looked when built in 1864 — any information will be appreciated. This model has so far been made from whatever can be gleaned from two photos, one from a family history of the Hill family, another from a photo of the cottage in 1930. However in 1864 a dwelling would have been erected to accommodate a couple. Over time additions may well have been added as the family expanded. The intention is to have the model on display over the 150th weekend, and provide it to the West Melton School for long-term keeping. Any help, especially as it may have been in 1864, will be very much appreciated. Please contact myself on 03 347 7136 or 027 347 7000. Ian Sandford West Melton

The Time After Time Field Day is set down for Saturday, September 20 on Dave and Lyn Robinson’s farm on West Melton Road, with a special schoolsonly day being held the day before. Organising committee spokesperson Andrew Sharpe said the field day is part of the sesquicentennial celebrations to be held over Labour Weekend but they felt the impact of farming on the West Melton community over the years was worthy of its own recognition. “In association with the Ellesmere

 Darfield High School students Ella Pearce and George Watson look over some of the reading material they were given at the recent student Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held at Parliament

The two Year 12 students had been involved in a student United Nations’ conference held earlier in the year in Christchurch and were keen to go to another mock political event. “I really enjoyed the process of negotiating and compromising and then finding something the majority of people are happy with. That’s incredibly difficult to do,” George said. Ella and George chose to represent India at the two-day meeting and prepared prior to the event by doing a lot of reading about their country. Ella said it was difficult to put her personal opinions about issues aside when representing her country, but she was very pleased at how they worked with the student representatives from Pakistan to improve the relationship

between the two countries. “We created a resolution and decided that we would have a joint nation called Indistan. We understand that the issues they face are real issues, but we tried to brighten it up a bit,” Ella said. Topics discussed at the meeting included youth unemployment, the relationship between sports and politics, and Scotland’s impending referendum. The students also participated in a crisis session on the second day over a border conflict between two countries. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key spoke to the students and answered their questions. “I got a lot more out of it than I expected. It was invaluable,” Ella said. 

The risqué musical set in a Texas brothel is a break from the Kirwee Players’ usual style of show according to the theatre company’s new president Linda Gosling. “It is a complete change of pace from some of the more traditional musicals. It has plenty of roles, catchy songs and high energy,” Ms Gosling said. The show got the most votes from last year’s cast when they were asked what show they would like to do next, according to Ms Gosling. “As the title suggests it really is a PG rated show as it contains sexual references, swear words and sexy lingerie, although it has nothing worse than on primetime TV,” she said. The show is directed by Courtenay resident Mabel Knight, with musical direction from Diane Coad of Christchurch and choreography by Amanda Hopkins of Darfield. The lead role of Miss Mona Stangley is played by CeCe James of Springfield. It is CeCe’s first time with Kirwee Players. Also making his debut with the company is Russell Moffat from Christchurch who plays the role of Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd. Ed Stott of Kirwee carries on the long family tradition of Stott involvement in

the Kirwee Players, taking on the role of Melvin P Thorpe. Ed’s mother Isabelle is head of wardrobe and his father David is stage manager. “We have some new and outstanding actors, singers and dancers. Something for everyone,” Ms Gosling said. The show runs until August 16 with tickets available for purchase online.  53 Main St Ph: 03 312 3432 Open 7 Days 10am - 5pm BOOKS • GIFTS • GOURMET ESSENTIALS

SHEFFIELD FIRE Brigade marks milestones and recognises supporters  by Kent Caddick

The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade is known around Selwyn for its innovative fundraising activities but recently marked some significant milestones in the careers of many of its firefighters. Topping the list at its 2014 awards evening was a presentation to the longserving Senior Station Officer Nev Croy marking 40 years of his service to the brigade. The brigade was formed in 1956 as a Volunteer Rural Fire Committee and in 1964 became the Sheffield Volunteer

Fire Brigade. It became part of the New Zealand Fire Service in 1975 as an auxilliary of the Darfield brigade. In 2009 it became a brigade in its own right, the only brigade to be allocated a district by the New Zealand Fire Service in the previous 15 years. The brigade’s area covers an approximate radius of 10 kilometres which includes both the foothills of the Sheffield Valley and Russells Flat and the vast terraces of the Waimakariri River. On average the brigade attends over 100 incidents a year including fires, motor vehicle accidents and first response medical calls. The brigade’s present appliance is a 2004 Mitsubishi tender which in 2009 replaced the brigade’s faithful old Dodge tender which was the firefighters’ ‘pride and joy’. The brigade is well known for our well organised and successful fundraising activities including its annual ‘4X4 Mud Plug’ and the ‘Wings and Wheels’ day which attracts competitors and spectators from all over New Zealand.

Hazelnuts a growing business  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Former North Otago sheep and beef farmer Alan Mathewson had a retirement dream of owning a small block and growing a few hazelnut trees. This idea came to fruition much sooner than expected when several years ago he saw a 30 acre property at Aylesbury with established hazelnut trees advertised in his price range. “I bought it at the auction at the end of that week. That’s how fast it happened,” Alan said. The property had 2000 hazelnut trees when Alan bought it, and now 11 years later there are 6000 Whiteheart hazelnut trees and 600 pollinating hazelnut trees, of which there are four different varieties. On an early August walk through one of the orchards the trees initially seem bare and dormant, but closer inspection, and with the assistance of expert eyes it’s possible to see the tiny red flowers on the hazelnut trees waiting for fertilisation. Nearby what was once a little red flower now takes on a blackened tinge as a sign that it has been wind pollinated from one of the pollinating hazelnut trees planted throughout the orchard. Alan has always loved hazelnuts, also known as filberts, which he has memories of eating as a child at Christmas time. Little did he know then

how they would become such a major part of his life. Following the purchase of his hazelnut grove, in 2004 Alan joined a hazelnut co-operative which has 110 shareholder growers from throughout New Zealand, with around 60 active growers. At that time the processing factory was located in Christchurch. By 2006 Alan had taken on the role of factory manager.

ROAD SAFETY

In 2007 Alan agreed to have the factory relocated to his Aylesbury property to help reduce costs. In 2008 the processing of shareholder’s hazelnuts began on the new site, following the official opening of the factory by the newly elected Selwyn mayor, Kelvin Coe. The factory began humbly, operating just two days a week and cracking around half a tonne of nuts a year. Before long

LIFESTYLE

Canine companion care  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

One of the big reasons people choose to have a lifestyle block is so they can have lots of animals and more often than not a dog or two finds its way into the menagerie. The Animal Welfare Act has a special section on the welfare of dogs which sets a minimum standard for looking after canine companions whether they be working dogs or house pets. Dogs must be given good shelter that can be easily accessed. It must include a dry and sheltered place to sleep which is big enough for the size of the dog so they can move around comfortably. An area must be available for them to defecate and urinate away from where they sleep. Daily exercise is important for dogs. The code recommends a minimum of 60 minutes of time spent out of kennels or off leads where dogs can stretch their legs and explore the world around them. Note this is a minimum and some breeds will require much more exercise. The animal code of welfare for dogs sets out guidelines for the weight and condition of dogs. Dogs should not be emaciated or thin, but neither should they be overweight. A dog is too thin when its ribs can be seen or felt easily and they show signs of malnutrition such as poor coat condition and lack of energy. Do not give your dog any cooked bones. Large raw bones are

less problematic. Special consideration should be given to working and pregnant or lactating dogs as they often require extra food and nutrition. The use of electric collars is discussed in the code, stipulating that they must not be used in any way that causes unnecessary pain. Electric collars should not be used on dogs with nervous dispositions or as a way of controlling barking. Retired veterinarian Dr Marjorie Orr does not recommend using electric collars unless it is a last resort. “My opinion is that the use of electric shock collars goes against the best dog training techniques, all of which are based on reward and not punishment. However there may be an argument for their minimal and strategic use in tough and robust dogs that are on ‘death row’ for behavioural problems such as attacking stock,” Dr Orr said. While tail docking is not completely banned, the code states that docking should only be carried out when a dog’s tail has been damaged and should only be done by a vet. “As a vet I believe that tail docking shouldn’t be carried out for several main reasons — the tail is

PROFESSIONALS

Professional eye on the landscape  by Belinda Cullen-Reid

A landscape architect is a professional designer who deals with all aspects of the landscape from a city centre master plan to a residential garden design. There are many different types of landscape architect and it’s important to find one that specialises in the type of work that you want. Different types of work include sitespecific landscape design (residential, commercial, educational or public), landscape assessment as part of the resource consent process, contract documentation, supervision and project management. Landscape architects also do large scale planning and management of outdoor areas for public bodies and corporates. To ensure you are hiring a professional landscape architect the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) have put together a helpful website with information on hiring, working with, and what to pay for a landscape architect, as well as what to do if there is a dispute. The NZILA members must hold a professional landscape architect qualification and are bound by the organisation’s ethical and professional standards. Registered landscape architects have also passed the NZILA’s professional practice examination. They are also required to participate in ongoing professional development.

The NZILA give the following tips to help choose a landscape architect that is right for you: • Select a landscape architect that has the skills and experience relevant to the work you require. If necessary, ask to see a list of projects they have done; • Get your landscape architect involved early on as early involvement  Whether your landscape architecture project is big or small it is a good idea to get a registered landscape in the project will often architect on board early on Photo courtesy of Père Igor save time and money in the long run, especially if they are to own alternatives. little enjoyment in life. I was struggling to keep up with my busy job and had no energy. Simple activities such as walking up stairs or getting into bed made me breathless. When I joined the challenge I was scared of what I knew was going to be hard work but I was also excited to be finally facing facts and beginning the journey. Day one of the challenge I expected to be told I could no longer eat and if I did it was going to be lettuce. Surprisingly the food wasn’t any different from what my family normally ate. What was going to be different for me was my portion control and learning to balance different food types. With that in mind I found planning the key to success. I spent an extra 10 minutes at night working out the meals I was going to eat the next day. Having the food ready meant it was easier to stay within my daily calorie allowance and I was less likely to buy food at work. The best part of the challenge was the fitness sessions. I started at the back of the group, in an obvious unfit state compared to most. In fact the first four sessions made me physically sick and incredibly sore. What I wasn’t

expecting though was how alive they made me feel in spite of this. I felt awesome and so good about myself. I focussed on setting myself small goals for every session, whether it was running for an extra minute or being able to complete an exercise correctly. The buzz I got when I could do a bit more each time was addictive. I found myself waking up excited for the sessions. At the start of the challenge I couldn’t run for 45 seconds and now I can run 5km. My next goal is to run a 10km race and then to complete a half marathon in the new year. All this because the biggest lesson I’ve learnt is to really push myself beyond what I think I can do and just try anyway. During this process, the icing on the cake has been meeting some amazing  Nicky before the 12 week challenge  Nicky after people in the community. Rather than spending weekends with up and accepted my position in life, but chips and wine in front of the TV, I am it is never too late to get back on track out with new friends running, walking, and start living. I still haven’t reached my final goals swimming and socialising. I definitely can say, I am no longer depressed, but I know I will never go back to where I lacking energy, struggling at work or was. Exercise and good nutrition is now obese. Looking back I had nearly given a part of my life.” 

Stress — what is it doing to me?  by Anna Dalzell

HOW MANY LIVES CAN YOU SAVE TODAY? SAVE UP TO

LIVES

Do any of these ring a bell with you — ‘I feel on edge all the time’, ‘I’m not sleeping well’, ‘I have trouble thinking clearly’, ‘I get angry (or anxious) easily’ or ‘I feel constantly overwhelmed’.

These are all common complaints of people who seek help for stress, and are just the more obvious signs of a body running a high stress response. More subtle signs of stress include lowered immunity to colds and illness, hormone imbalance, heart arrhythmias, skin conditions, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and exhaustion. We all know about stress but we often don’t acknowledge the effect it is having on us. Stress is tied up with our sense of control over an event and is aligned with our values. If something is important to us and is under threat our body will kick in with a stress response. A surge of adrenaline and cortisol is released into our body, readying us to fight or flee the situation. If it is important to us to perform well, have a tidy home or be a good parent for example, then anything that places us in a situation where we will be judged by others or ourselves, will prove stressful. If part, or all, of the situation is out of our control, such as a co-worker’s input, other people’s responses or our children’s behavior, we can feel vulnerable and threatened. Our nervous system is made up of two parts. One part is the sympathetic nervous system which primes us for action, kicks our system into gear and revs us up. If we allow this system to dominate we are setting ourselves up for overload. We cannot function in a

 It is important to recognise the warning signs of stress and to take action to do positive things to help you relax. Meditation is one way to reduce stress in your life

heightened state for long periods. The second part is the parasympathetic nervous system. It is the one that allows our body to relax, digest, restore and repair. Both systems must function in harmony in order for the whole system to survive. It is up to us then, to choose to support our restore and relax system with exercise, hobbies, reading, watching television, meditating, mindfulness, whatever works that allows nervous system balance.

Keep your mind and body functioning at an optimal level, ready to face life’s challenges in the resourceful way you would like to, and you will feel more at ease with yourself and the world. 

WINE AND FOOD

Small plates — big taste  by Celia and Hennie Bosman, True and Daring Winery

We love to travel. Our sons have definitely inherited the travel bug and not only did they get the travel bug, but also the tasty food bug. We have heard some great stories from them about all the weird and wonderful things they ate during the course of their travels in Europe. The four of us share an affinity with Portugal and close neighbour Spain. A firm food favourite for us is the many flavourful tapas (small plates) dishes that you can get in the local tabernas.

An interesting bit of trivia is that the serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation, because people are not so focussed upon eating an entire meal that is set before them. What a good idea. Many of the restaurants in Christchurch are also leaning toward the small plate experience. I personally

love the small bursts of flavour and interesting combinations. But what about the wine? Matching wines with multiple dishes can be difficult. As we mentioned in the previous articles, much of the success in wine and food pairing lies with the balance and structure of the dish and the wine.

The easy solution if you are dining out with friends is to order by the glass, each person ordering something different in order to experiment. Some general guidelines then: Crisp dry whites work well with fried and cheese-based tapas. Albariño is also an interesting white wine that is particularly versatile. Classic Rosé is at ease with strong garlic, tomato and red pepper, as well as chorizo and prawns. A good sparkling wine (known in Spain as Cava) is a great match for some of the deep fried or seafood dishes. With reds, Rioja has a firm, defined presence particularly suited to grilled meat and smoky pimenton. And if you really want to mix things up, sherry is often the preferred choice in Spain. The recommendation again is to just experiment. A good thing to remember is that foods generally go best with the wines they grew up with. So if you’re eating Italian food, think about having an Italian wine. This isn’t a requirement, but often helps to simplify the decision. There is a simple tapas recipe at www.celias.co.nz/blog to get you started. 
