A sixth mayoral candidate has thrown a hat into the ring at this year’s Selwyn local body elections.

Over 30,000 people have visited the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre in its first six weeks of operation. Aquatic Facility manager Kathy Moore says the centre has been an extremely popular place to visit and has been busy every day since it opened. “The new centre has been visited by people from right across the district and of all ages,” she says. “Many customers comment on how great the centre is and how convenient it is to have the facility here in Selwyn.” Mrs Moore says swimming is a particularly good way for people to stay active during the winter months. “It’s hard for people to get exercise after or before work when it’s dark and the weather is cold, but we can offer a safe place for people to swim in and nice warm pools to enjoy.” On average over 700 people a day have been visiting the new centre since

it opened on June 24. “The school holidays were a particularly busy time for us, and our staff enjoyed celebrating Kids Fest at a Pirate Pool party with games and inflatables with the children and families who came along to that.” Swim lessons are now underway at the Aquatic Centre for children over five. Thomas Stevens of Irwell, says his children Jesse (8) and Joseph (11) are loving their lessons. “I’ve been a big supporter of the Aquatic Centre from the beginning and the facility is great. My daughter Hazel is also starting lessons.” Lessons for pre-schoolers begins this week, while around 75 children of intermediate and high school age are attending swim squad training sessions at the centre and a local Masters group also uses the pool. ¢
Springs Ward councillor Malcolm Lyall has announced his intention to challenge Mayor Kelvin Coe and four others for the mayoral chains. “I don’t believe Selwyn’s voice is being heard outside the district and we need a strong voice and energetic leadership and that is why I am standing,” Lyall says. As well as Lyall and Coe, fellow councillors Sam Broughton and Sarah Walters, who is deputy mayor, along with former Mayor Bill Woods of Springfield and mental health advocate Dr Olive Webb of Hororata have indicated they will contest this year’s mayoralty. Lyall says for him one of the key aspects is that governance in Selwyn must be proactive rather than reactive. “Strategic planning is crucial for the development of the district as unplanned growth creates so many problems. “As mayor it is my aim to put people first and improve community communication and consultation to the extent I will hold informal meetings around the district where people can drop in for coffee and have a chat.” Lyall, an electrician by trade, first had a stint on council from 1992-95 but stood down for family reasons. However, he has been back around the council table since a by-election in 2005. Former Selwyn district mayor and Environment Canterbury councillor Bill Woods is back to have another shot at the mayoral chains. Woods, who has also sought a seat in Parliament as a Labour and a New Zealand First candidate finished runner up to Coe at the 2011 elections, 951 votes behind the Mayor. Meanwhile time is running out to enrol to vote in this year’s Selwyn local body elections, and the Electoral Commission is urging Selwyn residents to act quickly. “You will only get your voting papers sent to you if are enrolled by this Friday,

The bridge again
Dear Editor Really disappointing to note that such passionate people can get stuck on one thing for so long. Also disappointing that a local paper can print such rubbish and not the facts. The bridge — boy am I sick of hearing those words. Mr Paddy McKay spent 12 very demanding and time consuming years on a committee that he felt very strongly about but in the end a couple of people had to ruin it. His resignation from the Township Committee had nothing to do with Council decisions to remove the bridge, but everything to do with people with their own agenda and nothing to do with the community. Surely such place for discussion would be at a meeting and not in the papers. This witch hunt needs to stop. The election for Darfield Township Committee is to be held in November, perhaps such passionate people should get off (sic) their butts, put down their pen and paper and put their hand up high — they obviously feel they can do a better job. Once again the reporter has got only one side of the story and not the facts. Something that is true and correct. Your article (Council apologises over bridge removal) August 7 stated: ‘The Township Committee’s former chairman (to be PC should have said chairperson) Paddy McKay resigned from the committee following his involvement in having the bridge removed’. It is totally incorrect and not factual. It should have said: Paddy McKay former Chairperson resigned from the Township Committee after serving 12 years of very demanding, thankless work for the betterment of the community, not himself. At no stage did Selwyn District Council want to take any responsibility for their actions. Who would have been responsible if someone had been injured or worse on this bridge? It is the second year the school has run an equestrian rogaine to raise funds for the school. A rogaine is a bit like orienteering on horseback and this year’s event was run around Bottle Lake Forest in Christchurch. Around 100 took part in the event which saw teams of two to four using maps specially prepared for the event. The teams had three hours to score as many of the 34 checkpoints as they could without being late back. The checkpoints had different points values ranging from 20 to 90, so a lot
of pre-start strategy was involved. The penalty for being late was 10 points per minute. Five teams managed to score all controls and the fastest team comprised Adrian Roper, Lucy Roper, Derek Browne and Sally Hill from Tai Tapu. The first women’s team was Jodie Lockwood and Nicole Bulford from Courtenay, the first family team comprised Amanda and Beth Walker from Ashburton while the Little River Pony Club team of Andie Fitch, Sophie Tudehope and Emily Singleton was the best junior team. ¢
The goal for those taking part in the fundraiser was simple — to go without an alcoholic beverage for the entire month of July and be sponsored by friends and family. A train full of biosecurity professionals has seen at first-hand the beauty of the Selwyn district as well as some of the challenges involved in keeping the area’s weeds and pests down.
A new online directory is now available with over 180 listings covering a wide variety of activities and sports across the district. The Selwyn District Council’s community recreation advisor Ginny Bowden, who coordinated the development of the directory, says it will help people living in Selwyn to be more active. “We have many new people moving to Selwyn who would like to join a sports team or find out about what recreation activities are happening in their area for themselves or for their children. “Until now it has been difficult for people to get an overview of what recreation options are available to them.” She says that as Selwyn has grown the range of activities being offered within the district has also increased and many existing residents may not be aware of new groups and activities now available in Selwyn.

Planning is underway to develop McHughs Plantation near Darfield and a potential adventure park to be enjoyed by Selwyn residents is one of the plans on the drawing board.

Blood brings a variety of chemicals and compounds such as cholesterol to build and repair cells and hormones to govern metabolic and other functions. It also acts as part of our garbage disposal helping to remove toxins and waste by products. 10 years ago some researchers did a simple experiment. They had 30 volunteers to eat a high fat meal and using ultrasound noted a significant amount of stress on a major artery within a short time. They then repeated the trial with a second group with the same meal but this time added supplemental vitamins E and C but noticed no adverse effects of eating the high fat meal. The antioxidants seemed to completely prevent free radical induced stress from the high fat meal. I have just got off the phone from someone who has noted a real improvement in her eye health. Some time ago I had put her on a diet and supplements designed to help restore suppleness and blood flow to help with a skin condition. I was targeting the tiny capillaries which are incredibly vulnerable to losing suppleness mostly by accumulated free radical damage. In her programme I included the antioxidants including OPC’s, Acai extract, Bilberry and Vitamin C that are very effective in helping capillary function. The eye has a bed of some of our tiniest capillaries, some so small that red blood cells move in single file. We helped these to function better and both her skin and eyes have improved. Darfield High School students got to dress up and party the night away at the rural college’s annual school Formal earlier this month. Principal James Morris says congratulations must go to the organising committee for their efforts in putting together the excellent event. “This group, supported by Mr Adams, enabled us to have a great evening of feasting, dancing and socialising. “I do enjoy seeing the students looking grown up beyond their years in their fine gowns and suits. It gives a glimpse of the adults they are becoming.” Mr Morris says while the school does not get involved in after-formal events they do worry about the safety of the students once they leave the Formal. “As such, it was good to see parents and others in the community working together to support the organisation of an after-formal event that enabled students to have a safe party experience.” ¢

The ‘Double the Fun’ syndicate is the third such offering from goHarness Syndication, and follows in the footsteps of their first two multiple-ownership groups — the ‘In it for Fun’ Syndicate, which owns Franco Harrison and the ‘Trotting for Fun’ syndicate, which races Saratoga and a trio of well-bred 2-yearold fillies. Once again the high altitude event proved to have the benefit of being above the clouds in the sunshine as the low lands were clagged in drizzle. The barbecue was well subscribed as well as the make-shift ice bar situated on the side of tarn. “The curling started because we got a grant from the Real NZ Festival which was a government initiative in support of the RWC in 2011,” Mt Olympus club captain Simon Driscoll said. “From this we have created an annual event which is fast becoming a new tradition for the club.
“We had a lot of retired members take advantage of having an easy access with the helicopter and they love the opportunity to get back to the field in winter time. “All round we could not have asked for a better day, the sun shone, the wind stayed away, the competition was fierce and a good time was had by all.” The event was won by The Arrows team of John Shrimpton (The Skip aka captain), Rob and Don Sewell and Willie Walker, a team compiled on the day. They beat out Team Washpen, a group of four Aussie blokes, so New Zealand’s pride remained intact for another year. ¢
What is curling? According to Wikipedia curling is a sport in which players slide stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four rings. Two teams, each of four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called rocks, across the ice curling sheet towards the house, a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a game. Points are scored for the stones resting

closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each end, which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones. A game may consist of ten or eight ends. The curler can induce a curved path by causing the stone to slowly turn as it slides, and the path of the rock may be further influenced by two sweepers with brooms who accompany it as it slides down the sheet, using the brooms to alter the state of the ice in front of the stone.

With the focus on what goes on in the Sheffield area in this publication it would be right to add some thoughts from a well known character in the area on some products new and old from an equally well known business in the area.
Stu Stokes with his prototype Taege Cultivator purchased for its strength, to cope with the extra ground levelling needed after extra winter grazing of cows. He still maintains that direct drilling is the preferred option of seeding though
Stu Stokes from Dalethorpe road has been purchasing Taege Engineering built machinery for many years now and his input has been attributable to some of the many ideas shared by farmers with Taege Engineering that has ended up as part of the final products produced. Stu gets the credit for the idea behind the hydraulic spike extractor used on any post drivers built today, and has had a lot of input into the Taege Direct Drills so it was with some interest that we found an early prototype Taege Cultivator being used on Stu’s farm. New to Taege’s, the cultivator has been built on the back of the successful seed drills using a similar tyne layout which opens up
the opportunity for air seeder systems to be fitted. “Direct drilling is still my preferred way and I have always done a bit of cultivation says Stu but with the focus on winter grazing for cows my paddocks end up being a lot rougher than days gone by, hence the need for more cultivation to smooth out the paddocks. “I had a different brand of cultivator but I know it wouldn’t have stood up to the extra work load so I grabbed the Taege test cultivator as I knew it would be built with the same reputation as the rest of the Taege gear, like the proverbial outhouse. “I know the later cultivators are quite a bit different to my one as they get developed to suit the market so if you get the chance to see one working at a demonstration then go for it — I think you’ll be as suitably impressed as I am.” Talking of demo days don’t forget the Deer Field Day held at Stu Stokes’s place 409 Dalethorpe Road on the 29th August where you can see the results of Stu’s knowledge and experience put into practise, with the aid of some of Taege Engineering machinery.

SPOTLIGHT ON Sheffield & Springfield Celebrating fitness Sheffield property welcomes deer farmers Stu says the theme of this year’s field day will be innovative deer farming, forage options for deer, and a land and water update. “The afternoon will start at the Sheffield rugby club. Our first speaker will be Wayne Allan from Allan Agricultural Consulting Ltd, who’ll kick things off talking about key drivers in a deer business.” Stu says Wayne will be followed by Dr Glenn Judson from Agricom, talking about key nutritional considerations for deer. “When we’ve heard what Wayne and Glenn have to say, I’ll overview the farm and then we’ll head out for a property tour around 1.45pm.” The tour of Stu’s property will include the pivot block to get an outline of different farm activities including deer, arable and dairy grazing. This will be followed by a look at and discussion around recent irrigation development, fencing waterways and
being practical, with James Hoban from ECAN. Next stop will be the main yards to look at and discuss the main innovations on the farm, before heading for the hill block to talk about current management and future initiatives for hind block, and more from James Hoban on fencing and waterways. The day will wind up back at the rugby club for discussions around financial and productive summaries for individual properties and productive summaries — benchmark properties with Deer Industry New Zealand CEO, Dan Coup, followed by a barbecue. Stu says he and wife Julie are pleased to be able host the day at their property on the Dalethorpe Road. “We’ve asked people to come to the rugby club at 12.30pm where we’ll have a BYO lunch and a bit of a catchup before the event kicks off at 1pm, and a reminder that it is four wheel drives please.” ¢

The students grow vegetables under the guidance of a mentor and sell them at a weekly stall at Lincoln University. “The Year Two programme gives the students experience in a commercial environment without any risk. It’s the icing on the cake for a lot of the students here,” says Bill Martin. As well as the year-long organic horticulture course the college also offers a short course in sustainable farm management which begins on June 20. A distance (correspondence) programme in organics is also available. The Organic Training College is located at the Biological Husbandry Unit at Lincoln University. There are 10 hectares of certified organic land as well as greenhouses, tunnel houses and research areas.

Students need no prior qualifications or experience to commence Year One and can study full or part-time. Those who have some horticultural background can go straight into Year Two. An added appeal of the course is that all fees are under $500, and full time students are eligible to apply for a loan with the Student Allowance Scheme. Course Director Bill Martin says it works well to start the course year in the spring. “The organic horticulture course is all about growing so we want to start the course in spring when it is the right time to begin planting.” Year One students get plenty of handson training in subjects such as sowing and planting organic crops, soil management and composting. The Year Two students have the option of using land and facilities on the BHU Farm to grow and sell their own certified

This was a well enjoyed trip as many children have expressed an interest in animals and nature. Children searched for dinosaur bones and got up close to dinosaur and moa skeletons. They were able to touch and view an amazing array of insects, spiders, sea creatures and animals, experience learning through computers and kicking holographic leaves around. This term we are extending interests in construction. The children have been enjoying experimenting with colours and have made

With retailers desperate to win your spending money, you may be seeing some terrific deals out there. But don’t you hate it when the deal you were after is not in the store?
The Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter — a vital lifeline for the wider community
Over $245,000 was raised for the Canterbury Westpac Rescue Helicopter, part of a total of $1,550,000 raised across the country. Westpac’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Sue Foley, says the total raised is another fantastic effort. “We’d like to thank all the generous Kiwis who dug deep to show their support, as well as those who initiated and managed a huge variety of fundraising events in their communities.” Westpac ambassadors Richie McCaw and Sir John Kirwan also drummed up support in a North v South Westpac Chopper Challenge. This saw the pair dropped onto two remote mountain ranges armed only with a phone, 12 survival items and their wits, as they went headto-head to raise funds for their local rescue chopper service. In the end, the South Island took it out with Richie raising $17,096, and JK $15,292 — and having to wear his rival’s ‘I Love Christchurch’ t-shirt on national TV that evening. Donations are welcome throughout the year and can be made at www.airrescue.co.nz or any Westpac branch. ¢
So what can you expect from a sale? The Fair Trading Act prohibits stores from misleading customers about their products through advertising on TV, radio, fliers, signs in the store, and anything you are told when you are in the store. The store can’t advertise a cheap price on a product if they don’t have enough of them. So they shouldn’t have run out of a product when you arrive early on the first day of a sale. If the store has run out of the advertised product, ask if you can get a rain-check – this means you can get the same item for the sale price when they get more stock in. You’ve probably seen a lot of stores advertising ‘up to 50% off’. The store should have a reasonable number of items at half price, not just one or two. A sale advertised as ‘50% off everything’ should mean everything in the store is half price. A store shouldn’t use ‘fine print’ to try to qualify this. The advertised price and quality can’t be different to what you find in the store. Any other information they tell you about the product has to be true too, including how big it is, what functions the product can do, and
where you can use it. If you’ve got a flier or catalogue, you can take it to the store with you so you can compare what Maree Gallagher was advertised with what is available. If you think a trader has breached the Fair Trading Act then talk to them about it first. Point out the difference in quality or price to them - you may be able to get the item for a cheaper price. You can report a breach of the Fair Trading Act to the Commerce Commission which enforces the Fair Trading Act. The Commerce Commission can investigate and prosecute a trader who has breached the Act. You can also take a case to the Disputes Tribunal if you think a trader has breached the Fair Trading Act.
