In April this year, a country fete organised by Friends of West Melton School attracted 5,000 people and raised $40,000 for the new facilities, which were built during the July school holidays. Friends of West School spokesperson Emma Smith said the fete was also generously supported by several local companies, including gold sponsors McLenaghan Contracting, Ray White West Melton and the Your Section development in Wilfield. “Through this amazing support and a lot of hard work [we] were able to raise a massive $40,000 the school could use for upgrades not funded by the Ministry of Education,” she said. Those upgrades include an outdoor classroom space with decking and seating, built by local builders Chris Fifield Building Limited. The playground

extension, which adds slides, a tussock garden and wooden amphitheatre, was built by McLenaghan Contracting. “Both contractors went above and beyond expectations, using their skills and resources to make the outcomes more incredible than imagined,” Ms Smith said. The school’s principal Susan Jackson said the effort was an example the school continuing to build and support strong community relationships, and teamwork with the local and wider communities. Our kids are benefitting in so many ways,” she said. “Recently, the addition of a magnificent outdoor learning space and an extension to an existing playground has provided further learning and play opportunities for our learners and teachers. Landscaping and native plantings, guided by our

cultural narrative, have accentuated the learning environment. “These long-awaited projects, to complement our existing learning and play spaces, were as a result of the hard work and drive of our Friends of West Melton School team. “It has also been a privilege to once again work with McLenaghan Contracting who have continued to support West Melton School for well over 20 years. They have created an amazing outdoor space from bare ground. We are also very grateful to Chris Fifield Building Limited, who built the huge outdoor learning space. Ms Jackson praised the school and wider community for supporting fundraising events and for, “enabling us to increase an already great teaching, learning and play environment for our children and community.” 

The Selwyn branch is celebrating its fourth birthday, and its services are reaching record numbers of people in need. “Bellyful has the most amazing, dedicated and hard-working volunteers, who really care about their communities. I have noticed the great community support we receive from referrers, sponsors and supporters,” says Bellyful chief executive, Charlotte Delahunty. “Bellyful helps promote community connectedness, and more people are getting involved. Our volunteer network has grown to 650 as we have focussed on providing more training and better communication and support. That has enabled Bellyful to grow enormously.” Jenny was a Bellyful recipient eight years ago when her second child was born almost 12 weeks premature.

“Although life was a blur, looking back one thing that stands out to me are the home-cooked meals delivered by volunteers,” she says. “I would get home exhausted, but I had dinner and baking waiting for me, which the Bellyful team had prepared. Honestly, it was a god-send.” The charity is funded by donations, grants, sponsorship and fundraising. “We hosted 11 simultaneous events on August 10, with the release of the Bellyful story on video. We would love to see more people involved as we grow and support families for the next 10 years. We are very grateful for the valuable support from our partnerships.” For more information on referring, volunteering or making a donation, either go to bellyful.org.nz or email contact@bellyful.org.nz. ¢

Mike King will be at Rolleston College empowering both young and old with positive reinforcement on September 17 at 7pm. Selwyn Parenting Network brings Mike to Parenting Week to share his experience and his insights into the problems faced by young people today. “He promotes the message that it’s okay to ask for help. He champions a whole school, community-wide approach to wellbeing, sharing ideas about how we can empower our young people to help them develop resilience and live happy and productive lives,” says Selwyn Parenting Network coordinator Kate Webb. “Mike spoke at Christ’s College in May, and the people who attended are still speaking about how he impacted not just the young folk but everyone. The knowledge he shared has helped them with their parenting skills, their outlook

on life, and how they think about certain life circumstances. He is very excited to be coming to join us, and Rolleston College has been fantastic with providing the venue, which will seat 500 people. We couldn’t wish for a better venue as we bridge the gap for rural families as well and stretch right out across Selwyn. We really hope younger people will come along for a great evening. “Mike says the event will lend itself to children, teenagers and adults as he delivers a hopeful message and connects people with services and resources within the community.” Tickets are $12 a person or $20.00 for two people and are selling fast. They can be booked through dashtickets. co.nz. ¢

Town Centre design guidelines released Planning for the Rolleston Town Centre has moved a step forward with the release by the council of design guidelines.

p The new “civic heart” of Rolleston

The guidelines set out a framework for the design of the new town centre and give guidance to developers who will be designing both private and public spaces and buildings within the area. Council urban planner Gabi Wolfer said the Selwyn community is in a unique position to be able to develop its own town centre. “It will be a brandnew place we haven’t had to ‘revitalise’, but one we have actually crafted to the way we want it to be,” she said. “The shaping of this exciting project comes with responsibilities to create the best possible place that we can all be proud of, and that will work for generations to come and enjoy.” The guidelines propose a series of

public spaces, including the Tennyson Street ‘High Street’, which is seen as a traditional high street based around Te Ara Atea with a mix of smallscale retail and hospitality at ground level and opportunity for offices and other complementary uses upstairs. Wordsworth Street will be predominantly a shopping street anchored by a large format retailer. The design also proposes a series of intimate laneways within four distinct quarters, which Ms Wolfer said would allow for a range of activities, each with its own bespoke design and character. Initial preparatory work on the town centre is expected to start in the next two to three months. ¢

Standing for re-election u by Mike Isle

Selwyn District Council’s sitting mayor Sam Broughton has put his name into the hat again, and at this stage, it appears it will be a two-horse race. As well as Broughton, Bill Woods, a former one-term mayor, who served from 1992 until 1995, has put in his nomination for the mayoralty as well as for the Malvern Ward and the Tawera Community Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board. He has been unsuccessful in his bid for the mayoralty in the last three elections and the previous two elections for the Malvern Ward. Broughton swept into power in 2016 when he successfully ran against four candidates. Broughton’s

winning margin over second-placed candidate Pat McEvedy was 720. Woods came in fourth. When elected Sam Broughton was one of the country’s youngest mayors. A former youth worker, and Darfield resident, 38-year-old Broughton has served his first-term as a full-time mayor. At the time of his 2016 election, he said he hoped to serve as the district’s mayor for at least three terms. The 2019 Local Body Elections are in October. Nominations close on August 16.

Protect our dolphins

Upcycling from waste

DOC and Fisheries New Zealand are seeking feedback on the plan to protect Hector’s and Maui dolphins, and due to a large response, the time frame for submissions has been extended to 10 am, Monday, August 19.

u by Ann van Engelen

p The Hector’s dolphin is found in the South Island

Hector’s and Maui dolphins are unique marine mammals found only in New Zealand waters. These species live close to the coast, making them particularly vulnerable to human activities. Their numbers have been dwindling, and there are estimated to be only between 57 and 75 Maui dolphins above the age of one year left in existence. They are classified as nationally critical under the New Zealand Threat Classification System. There are around 15,000 Hector’s dolphins, and they are classified as nationally vulnerable. Alongside fisheries impacts, such as trawling and set nets, there

are several other threats to these dolphins, including disease, seismic surveying, seabed mining and vesselbased tourism. The consultation is on a range of options to improve the way threats to Hector’s and Maui dolphins are being managed by the Hector’s and Maui Dolphin Threat Management Plan. The proposals have been put together using the best available information. To have your say on the options for protecting Maui dolphins in the North Island and three options for protecting Hector’s dolphins in the South Island from fishing related threats complete the online survey at doc.govt.nz/ dolphintmp. ¢

The company that looks after our roads has won a major national award for its work in Selwyn.

p The new Four Square supermarket in Darfield

It is the first to roll-out new ESL (electronic shelf labels), LED lighting and two self-checkouts for techsavvy customers. The new build kicked off in December last year, and just nine months later is ready to welcome its first customers. At 1,200 square metres, the new store is twice the size of the previous supermarket and has more than 70 car parks located right outside. Four Square Group Manager (South Island) Steve Alexander said, “It’s quite remarkable to see the transformation of the Four Square brand, but the one thing that hasn’t changed in our 95 years is our commitment to providing customers with quality products and exceptional community service, of which we are all extremely proud.” Four Square Darfield is no exception with local family ties going back three generations, he said.

Store owners Kelvin and Delwyn Taege say the business has been in their family for more than 39 years, and they are excited to begin their next chapter in a ‘brand new’ modern store. “While it’s sad to see the old building and a lot of history go, we know the community is going to absolutely love this new full-service store,” Kelvin said. “I think they will particularly enjoy the ease of the new self-checkouts when they need to pop in for a few fresh products, or even a hot meal on the go. These are in addition to the regular checkout stations.” “We’ll still have the same, friendly team of wonderful staff from the previous store, with a number of new smiling faces to help customers find what they’re after and provide any help required getting to know the new selfcheckouts and store layout.” ¢

p HEB Construction’s dedicated Selwyn road team — national winners

HEB Construction took out the award for excellence in the maintenance and management of assets for its work maintaining 2,600 kilometres of roads across the Selwyn District at this year’s CCNZ Hirepool Construction Excellence Awards. The company contracts to the Selwyn District Council. The council’s infrastructure group manager Murray Washington congratulated HEB saying: “For a district like Selwyn, which is addressing significant population growth and the associated growth in vehicles, particularly heavy vehicle traffic, meeting people’s expectations and living within budget means it’s important we have a roading partner looking at innovative ways to manage

roading, and we congratulate HEB on this award.” HEB Construction’s national manager road maintenance Lee Hautler said the company was delighted to have won the award and receive recognition for its work in Selwyn. “HEB has been contracted to the Selwyn District Council to maintain the district’s roading network since 2010. It was sensational to see the Selwyn District Council and our own HEB team recognised as industry leaders of excellence. The judges were impressed with our submission that showcased the collaborative environment the Selwyn District Council transport team had enabled and subsequent innovations that had been collectively achieved,” Hautler said. ¢

The Office of the Inspectorate has released inspection reports for the three Christchurch prisons — Christchurch Men’s, Christchurch Women’s and Rolleston.

“Abreast of Life started back in September 1999 and have had many successes, with paddling and club members encouraging each other as we face our individual issues relating to breast cancer,” says team captain Meri Gibson. “We would like all ex paddlers, supporters and coaches to join us to celebrate on October 5.” Meri is also captain of the NZ Black Dragons Senior B Women’s small boat squad going to Thailand this Friday. p The Abreast of Life Dragon Boat Club are celebrating 20 years of success ABOL team member Janice Melville and Rolleston resident ‘Gilly’ in 2006. “We are very excited to be a McGill, are also in the New Zealand team. part of the competition which starts “The competition is held every two on August 21. “We started as a Pay it Forward page on Facebook in December 2016 and now have more than 15,000 members who regularly pay forward items and interact with each other. We have had charity status just over 12 months now,” says director Maria MacFarlane. “Our motto is ‘No one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone’. Every week volunteers help run the groups in Central, South and North Canterbury. We do not tolerate negativity, and our pages are heavily monitored by a dedicated team. Our aim is to provide a safe and judgementfree zone for people from all walks of life. We collaborate with other agencies and charities to ensure people receive the help they need.” Maria says there is a gap in the local community for low to

middle-income families in need. “Our groups include breastfeeding mums, solo dads and grandparents, and we repurpose things of good quality, including household goods, baking and children’s items. “At present, we need consumable items and donations for baby and toddler bundles. Many of us purchase these ourselves because the demand is far outweighing our donations. A $20 donation will get nappies, soap, shampoo plus more and every donation, no matter how small will help a family. Progressing through opportunity u by Ann van Engelen

Rhiannon Whelan received a DairyNZ undergraduate scholarship through her interest in dairying, undertaking an agricultural-related degree at Lincoln University. In her last year of study, Rhiannon has accepted a position through the ANZ New Zealand graduate programme. “I am in my last semester, and the DairyNZ scholarship has helped cover my course fees. You get a lot of mentoring and working opportunities as well as the chance to network with other students,” says Rhiannon. “I grew up in a farming community and have always been aware of the issues surrounding farming and had an interest in the management of different systems. After leaving school, I travelled to Wales and Germany to work on dairy farms and attended conferences and discussion groups surrounding the industry. I began to understand how highly regarded the New Zealand dairy industry is internationally and wanted to further my knowledge of dairy farming in New Zealand and our trading partners, which lead me to a degree in Agricultural Commerce at Lincoln. “We have spent a lot of time on farms here with assignments from cropping to sheep, beef and dairy. There is a big difference with the irrigation and land values compared to other parts of the country. I gained cropping experience in

Salute to the big tracks u by Andy Bryenton

Our local contractors would be stuck without tracked machines, able to carry heavy hydraulic gear over all sorts of terrain to tackle the biggest demolition, earthmoving and building tasks. Moreover, where did the ubiquitous ‘caterpillar track’ come from? November 24, 1904. A muddy islet in the middle of the San Joaquin River Delta in California. Other American families were getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner. However, out amid the reeds, Benjamin Holt was unwilling to take a break from his new project. Traction engines of the day sunk into the soggy soil of this part of the country. His plan: replace the plank roads, which were used to support the iron monsters. He chose to chain together a series of redwood slats between the wheels, making an ‘endless belt’. To say that it worked well is an understatement. By

1911, Holt had found a name for his machine, based on a photographer’s observation that it crawled over allterrain like a caterpillar. By 1925, Holt’s company had merged with that of his biggest rival in the manufacture of heavy equipment, CL Best to form the Caterpillar company. Meanwhile, the first world war had provided the toughest test of mud, wire and rough terrain ever faced by vehicles. Those wooden slats had evolved into the ‘endless road landship’ concept, developed by the British and soon to be called the tank. There have been some well-known Caterpillars

down the years. From the D2s, deployed both here and to Australia in the 1930s, to the machines that paved airfields across the Pacific Islands to help win the second world war for the Allies. In the post-war boom, Caterpillars built America’s freeways and interstates, and the Caterpillar logo became familiar overseas as well. Today, the name has become synonymous with the invention, in the

same way, brand names like Sellotape and Levis have come to define a whole product range. Caterpillar tracks are the common name given to the treads that make all manner of big machines able to traverse boggy, rough or broken ground. It all began on a Thanksgiving day in 1904, but there are operators who thank Mr Holt every time they turn the key in the morning. ¢

Selwyn Services and Amenities

Amenities for work and play Selwyn’s history is one of providing amenities to help rural and industrial growth take off. Having all of those experts in building and construction on hand has also meant it’s possible to create some civic amenities for something just as important — recreation and fun. It’s a universal truth that those who work hard like to play hard, and the district has always had time to contest a sporting fixture with rivals and neighbours. Back in 1891, the Selwyn Rugby Football Club came into being, establishing a home at Glentunnel Domain. Since then, sporting and recreational facilities have sprung up across the network of towns that make up Selwyn. A good example is the local aquatic centre, which provides the ability to swim year-round despite the weather out of doors. Another is that haven for petrolheads and horsepower enthusiasts, the Ellesmere Motor Racing Club, founded in 1969 and still delivering high-octane thrills for drivers and spectators alike. With spring almost here, it’s a good time to take a look at your recreational options. Which is why ‘have a go’ day is the perfect opportunity to get out and about this month. On Sunday, August 25 West Melton Community Centre will showcase a range of sports and activities for you and the family to try, ahead of a fresh new spring season. Admission is free, with a range of games, challenges and sports coming out to

There’s been a very favourable impression formed of the LDV brand here in New Zealand in recent years, with their no-nonsense, hard-working cargo vans becoming popular for those trades, which require reliable mass transit. Then came the T60 ute, a serious contender for king of the low-price modern light commercials. Now the line between work and play has been crossed. LDV’s D90 sports utility is no crossover or mini version of the fourwheel-drive concept. It’s a full-sized, full-featured machine with seating for the entire family, up to seven people. They’ll be safe, too as the new LDV comes with a five-star ANCAP rating after passing a battery of intensive tests. It’s also available with real four-wheel drive, including automatically locking differentials, in an era when many vehicles pretend to have dirt and gravel chops — but come up short when it’s time to deliver. The biggest surprise is that it’s not a thumping big diesel under the hood, but a 220 horsepower turbocharged petrol unit, developing 350Nm of torque to deliver a two-tonne towing capacity. That means no pesky road user charges, and plenty of ability to get the boat in the water at the same time, but a very different feel from benchmark SUVs like the venerable Land Cruiser. Engine stop-start and clever ECU setting keep the fuel bill low, though there is a ‘sport’ mode, which will

doubtless have plenty of appeal. In this category of 4x4, the equation is all about the cost to benefits analysis. How much vehicle do you get for your dollars? In the case of the D90, the answer is ‘plenty’, with touch screen infotainment, Apple and Android support, hill descent control, acres of interior space and

topping it all, a five-year warranty. You could literally buy two of these, one in each colour available (white or black), for the cost of some other seven-seaters out there. All while remembering that the D90’s stablemates are becoming a bit of a byword for reliable hard work, deep into the odometer band. ¢

Saddle-up for the new Mustang u by Mike Isle

The current trans-Tasman Supercars series is being dominated by the flying Ford Mustangs that this year replaced the long-serving Ford Falcons. New Zealanders have been to the forefront of that. Fittingly we are about to get a new Mustang to play with. The High Performance 2.3L Mustang will join the New Zealand line-up in February 2020 a unique performance version alongside the 5.0-litre V8 Mustang GT. “The High Performance 2.3L helps extend Mustang’s already broad appeal,” said Kay Hart, Ford Australia and New Zealand president and CEO. “With distinctive looks, increased equipment level and bold colour choices, this turbocharged model is a welcome addition to the line-up. The car is offered in classic fastback body style with unique visual elements. Beginning with a new front grille, the MY2020 turbocharged model uses the Mustang GT’s more aggressive front splitter, flanked by Magnetic mirror caps and aggressive bonnet spears. Under the bonnet — it is all power. The Ford Performance-developed 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine develops 236kW at 6,200rpm and 448Nm of torque at 3800rpm[i], the highest output for a road-going production Ford four-cylinder in history, and is offered with an advanced

10-speed paddle-shift automatic. “It’s not just the power gains over the previous 2.3-litre engine,” said Carl Widmann, chief programme engineer, Ford Mustang. “It’s the broader torque curve that delivers 90 per cent of peak torque between 2,500 and 5,300rpm. Plus, horsepower holds stronger up to the 6,500rpm redline — enabling more usable power and torque.” The interior offers standard leatherupholstery or optional leather Recaro sports seats, with touchpoints including

a leather-wrapped classically designed three-spoke sports steering wheel and handbrake boot. Ford SYNC 3[iii] with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto[iv] is standard. SYNC 3 also includes an eight-inch full-colour reversing camera display, as well as built-in sat-nav with complimentary mapping updates for up to seven years. The 2020MY Ford Mustang High Performance 2.3L goes on sale in New Zealand in February 2020 with a retail price of $65,990 plus on-road costs. ¢
