An automated irrigation system was installed on the two fields in front of the Lincoln Event Centre late last year and now it’s the turn of the back fields. The Selwyn District Council said it’s hoped the installation will be complete by the start of the cricket season in October. Groundsman Bruce Tweedy said the new system is a time-saver and was improving the quality of the fields. “The benefits have been noticeable with the fields still in great condition due to the grass cover and watering.
Any other year and the fields would be really muddy by now. “It is also less labour intensive than having to move the irrigator three times a day and shift it every night,” Mr Tweedy said. According to council the new system will help with water conservation by allowing more night watering when there is less evaporation. “While the Lincoln Domain is fortunate to have its own water supply we are conscious of using the precious commodity wisely” council said. ¢

Selwyn MP Amy Adams was on hand to cut the ribbon on the new facility in Dunsandel Domain at a ceremony recently. The building replaces the original Dunsandel Community Hall which was located in the township and demolished after being damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the new facility will be a fantastic asset to the Dunsandel area. “A project like this doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t happen by accident. It takes a lot of planning and
contributions from a number of people. “This beautiful building is a testament to the dedication of the community, with a total of $350,000 raised in donations, as well as generous contributions from Rata Foundation and The New Zealand Lottery Grants Board.” he says. The new Community Centre is a multi-purpose facility which will be used by sporting and community groups, businesses, and for events. For information about booking the facility people can contact Russell Dalzell on 027 477 9754 or email chair. dunsandel.cc@selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

A little kindness for Christmas
Council says no to Easter trading changes
3
The Selwyn District Council has backed away from changing Easter Sunday shop trading hours despite 60% of businesses it surveyed supporting the move.
While she declined, saying they wanted just to give one hamper, it started the Olivers thinking that they must be able to help others. “I knew we couldn’t help everybody but was sure we could help more than one,” Natasha said. The couple contacted a number of local businesses to help put together the Christmas Kindness Hampers. Natasha said the idea was that in the hamper they would provide a roast chicken for Christmas day, vegetables for the roast, Christmas tree and decorations, and presents for the kids. “Everything they needed for that one day so at least no matter what was going on in their lives they could at least celebrate that day with a full tummy.” The Olivers were able to collect $5,000 worth of products from The Warehouse, chickens from Brink’s Chickens and fresh vegetables from Prebbleton’s Healthy Harvest. “We also had Christmas presents donated to them from the local community, and canned goods from local businesses and pre-schools.” The couple found they had enough goods to put together 21 hampers. Natasha said they did everything on their own and collected all the goods from Rolleston to Rakaia and brought them home. “We had them in the garage
and lounge and then sat down and wrapped all the presents, divvied up all the hampers and then spent 16 hours over two days hand delivering them to people in need from Rolleston to Tai Tapu and Christchurch.” Natasha said the people who received the hampers were nominated by the people who had been generous enough to help out. This year the Olivers will be doing things slightly differently. “Last time it was very time consuming and draining for both of us so this year we will be asking the donors to give the hampers to someone they know who needs it themselves which will help to cut back the time we have to be involved in collecting the goods and then delivering all the hampers.” The Olivers have just started getting the message out about this year’s Christmas Kindness Hamper drive and anyone who wants to donate, nominate someone in need, sponsor or begin collecting for a Christmas Kindness Hamper can email Natasha at gifts@ RandomActsOfKindness.co.nz or go to the website at randomactsofkindness. co.nz. Last year the Government introduced the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Act, which gave councils the ability to decide whether shops in their district can trade on Easter Sunday. The Selwyn District Council has decided it will not develop a policy on Easter Sunday trading hours, which means that the current restrictions and exemptions on Easter Sunday trading will remain unchanged. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the decision came after a survey of community views on changes to Easter Sunday trading showed opinions were evenly split. According to council supplied figures 46% of those surveyed supported council developing a policy on Easter Sunday hours, while 47% opposed a policy. A survey of retailers showed that while 60% of retailers would support developing a policy, 35% did not support it. Mayor Broughton said the feedback indicated that there was no clear mandate for a change. “With opinion so evenly divided in the community, we were not hearing a groundswell of opinion calling for the rules to be relaxed,” he said. “Although some in the community

Creating success stories Supporting business by Sam Broughton, Selwyn Mayor
by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP
This month I am hosting business meetings in Rolleston, Lincoln, Leeston and Darfield to look at the opportunities and difficulties of running a business in Selwyn.
Success stories like Rocket Lab, Weta Workshop and Team New Zealand show that New Zealanders have the creativity, the talent and the determination to compete with the big players on the world stage. Part of the role of being in government is about making forwardlooking decisions that will prepare our country, and the next generation for the decades to come. This Government is ambitious for the next generation and our digital learning approach is about continuing to support an innovative education system that fosters innovative minds. Recently, we announced the biggest change to the school curriculum in 10 years — a change that will help New Zealand’s young people build the skills they need to succeed in the 21st Century. At the forefront of this change is the need for our children to be digitally fluent. When we talk about digital fluency, we don’t just mean being able to use technology effectively. Digital fluency is about having the skills and knowledge to become innovative creators of new digital technology.
The new curriculum will see all young people from years one to 10 taking part in digital learning. Meanwhile, new achievement standards will be developed for NCEA to help older students acquire specialised skills already in high demand by employers. To support the introduction of the proposed curriculum changes, the Government will invest around $40 million over three years to help upskill our teachers, develop new digital learning resources, and extend online exam trials. This will also fund other initiatives aimed at getting more young people, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, involved in digital innovation. We’re delivering the changes we need to future-proof our education system so that the next generation of young Kiwis are well-equipped to deliver more of the innovative thinking we’re known for around the world. ¢
Businesses are a key part of our community and provide opportunities for people to follow their passions, provide incomes for families, and are often a place to gather and yarn about the latest news. Many of the businesses at the Rolleston meeting mentioned the rapid growth and expansion in their business over the last 12 months. This is good news for those involved and hints at opportunities for those looking to set up. In Selwyn we have a self-employment rate of 27% compared to a national figure of 18%. This means one in four of us are running our own business, getting on and sorting things ourselves, and are involved in all the responsibility that goes with it. The mean annual earnings in Selwyn for 2016 was $56,270 per
annum which is a rise of 4% over the last 10 years. Our unemployment figure currently sits at 2.2% which means that most people looking for a job are able to find one. The hard thing about that figure is that it means it is very difficult for some businesses to find the right staff for their positions. Council feels this pressure and is a business too, and while we have regulatory functions and rules, we are also involved in employment and delivering value for money to our community. I look forward to meeting you at the upcoming meetings in your town and discussing the possibilities and obstacles as you see them. ¢

Selwyn River funding welcomed
Award recognises innovative network
A $1 million funding grant from the Government will go towards trying to save an iconic Selwyn River swimming spot.
Lincoln University researchers who helped with the formation of a national Maori Biosecurity Network have been recognised in the inaugural New Zealand Biosecurity Awards.

Environment Canterbury and the Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee say the funding will go towards the restoration of Coes Ford which dried up over the summer. Zone Committee Chair Allen Lim said recent research showed just how much the community valued the opportunity to swim at spots like Coes Ford. “A detailed plan is currently being implemented to make the Selwyn River swimmable at this site. “Restrictions on water takes from the river are already in place, new takes
are prohibited, and water transfers are restricted,” Mr Lim said the funding will also help improving the aquatic habitat for native fish species and brown trout in Selwyn rivers. The state of the Selwyn River and other waterways in the district have been under the spotlight with around 150 people attending a meeting over the issue at Lincoln High School recently, organised by the newly formed Selwyn Waihora Water Improvement Mission advocacy group. ¢

Te Tira Whakamataki’s founders, Melanie Mark-Shadbolt and Dr Amanda Black from Lincoln University, and Dr Nick Waipara from Auckland set up the network to ensure Maori have a voice in New Zealand’s biosecurity system, and to integrate Maori perspectives and solutions into biosecurity research. “The award shows that our work is being noticed, and highlights the

vital role of an inclusive biosecurity system that is robust, resilient and representative of the country as a whole,” Melanie Mark-Shadbolt said. The network is involved with communities dealing with myrtle rust and provides reliable information for iwi throughout the country. It consults on current and future biosecurity threats, such as kauri dieback, brown marmorated stink bug and the cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis. The network is supported by the Biological Heritage National Science Challenge, the Bio-Protection Research Centre and Plant and Food Research. ¢

IPort continues to grow
Seal success story
Development of Rolleston’s $500 million IPort business park is pushing ahead.
New Lincoln University research is highlighting conservation issues around the recovery of the New Zealand fur seal after centuries of overexploitation.
p Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton left, looks over plans for the IPort development in Rolleston with Tim Carter of the Carter Group
Developers of IPort, the Carter Group, have just released eight sections of prime commercial and industrial land in the 122 hectare development which is being built adjacent to the Selwyn District Council’s Izone industrial park. IPort director Tim Carter said the release of eight sections of prime commercial and industrial land offers an exciting opportunity for smaller operators to take advantage of being located in a large-scale business park. “The smaller lots we are releasing are a unique opportunity for purchasers who haven’t considered a commercial development before. We expect there
will be a lot of interest from businesses wanting to expand and streamline operations into a new facility and to take advantage of being located in a large-scale business park.” Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton said IPort is an exciting and positive development for the region. “It’s a continuation of the good work council has put into growing residential, commercial and industrial areas around Rolleston to provide capacity for growth and expansion of the township, providing jobs for those living here and places for people to shop,” Mayor Broughton said. ¢
The research involved reconstructing the demographic history of the seals using maternally inherited, mitochondrial DNA sequences. Lincoln University associate professor Adrian Paterson said samples were obtained from 186 fur seals from around New Zealand and the Bounty Islands in the Sub Antarctic. “We got information from whole mitochondrial genomes for each of these seals which allowed us to look at how genetically different the various colonies and areas were from each other.” Results showed a seal population of up to 3,000,000 in pre-human New Zealand, twice as large as estimated previously, before hunting and commercial sealing reduced it to 10,000 by the end of the 19th century. “This pre-human population figure gives us an estimate for the best (or worst) case scenario for seal population growth,” Associate Professor Paterson said. Conservation measures have led to a recovery. The estimate for the New Zealand fur seal population in 2015 was about 200,000 individuals, approximately 6% of the prehuman population. He said fur seals have effectively gone beyond the conservation phase
p Lincoln University research shows the New Zealand fur seal population is recovering but means a competition for spots on the beach for humans
and are a self-managing population. “They are one of the few New Zealand native species success stories. “It is very likely that the fur seal population can, and will, continue to grow considerably from what we see today. “So in future we will see more seals, new colonies in areas settled by humans, and some competition for fish species of interest to humans. In short, lots of wildlife management issues to solve so that humans and seals can continue to live together.” ¢

Both Canterbury Country and Ellesmere were in action over the weekend, with Country travelling to Wyndham to take on Southland Country, while Ellesmere faced up to the Cantabrians, a Canterbury U20 development side, at West Melton Domain. Canterbury Country, which is made up of players from the Ellesmere and North Canterbury sub-unions were involved in a tight tussle with their Southland opposites, and at the end of the 80 minutes nothing separated the sides with a final score of 28-28. Both sides scored four tries each in the match with Daryl Lambourn, Harry Pankhurst, Mark Maitland and Brook Retallick crossing the tryline for Canterbury. Retallick added four conversions. Canterbury Country’s next match is against Tasman B in Nelson this weekend with matches against Otago B in Dunsandel, Metro and Otago Country to follow. Woodland eggs they can be 100 per cent sure they are authentic free range. Every egg will be stamped and have the Woodland tree symbol and a code — this can be used on Woodland’s website to show where each egg was laid,” says Michael Guthrie, managing director of Mainland Poultry Limited. “As New Zealand’s leading producer of free range eggs, we were naturally very concerned about recent allegations that a small number of cage eggs may have been marketed as being free range. “This compelled us to fast-track our plans to guarantee the provenance of our eggs by providing complete traceability from the farm to the consumer’s kitchen. “At all the farms, the eggs are collected daily to ensure freshness. We stamp each egg at the barn where we collect them, so there can be no question that it is, in fact, a genuine Woodland free range egg.” The technology was developed in the Netherlands by Nuovo. It uses safe food grade ink, so the egg is completely unaffected by the stamping process. Maurik Wouters, owner of Nuovo says egg stamping for traceability is already regulation in the EU as part of the European standard and has been

hens always have access to fresh feed and water. “We work with nutritionists to provide a balanced diet to meet the hens’ nutritional requirements. Our feed is made here in the South Island by our sister company, MainFeeds.” These mixes are a blend of locally grown wheat and barley, plant proteins and essential vitamins and minerals. Outside on the range the hens forage, scratching around for worms and bugs enjoying their natural behaviour. The ideal weather for a hen out on the range is an overcast misty day. A lot of people presume that the hens would prefer a clear sunny day but they are always fearful of attack from above so feel a lot more comfortable under clouds. This is also why trees and shelter are so important. “Our own hens are reared at our dedicated free range rearing farm. As with all livestock for production, rearing is a very important part of the chain — it is essential we do this part ourselves so the hens arrive at our laying farms in the best condition.” The hens are set up for laying and prepared for their new environment at the laying farm. “When consumers buy

Woodland is the first brand to implement this in New Zealand and they now operate to the world standard for traceability. “It is a matter of principle for us to give our customers 100 per cent confidence that our eggs are genuinely free range,” Michael says. “The demand for free range eggs is growing strongly, and as the recent outcry has shown, consumers want to be assured that they get the genuine product.”

Are bones good for dogs? by Yolande Howell, Selwyn Vet Centre
Feeding bones to dogs is generally believed to be a good thing. Gnawing on a bone is the best way to keep your dog’s teeth clean — and a great way to keep a dog occupied for a good long time. However, the choice of bone given is of utmost importance. Lean, fresh meaty bones with minimal fat are best. These can include beef, venison or lamb long bones, while brisket bones are also good. They must be raw or smoked — cooked bones of any kind are more likely to fragment into sharp pieces. Never feed chicken bones to dogs, also avoid ribs and chop bones, and as mentioned above never feed cooked bones of any type. Most dogs cope fine with a bone, however all dogs are different. Many dogs in rural areas are fed bones daily, and never have an issue with them. Other dogs can struggle and may suffer episodes of vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation after chewing on a bone. The high fat content of bone marrow can in some dogs trigger pancreatitis, a potentially dangerous condition. If your dog is not used to having bones and your vet suggests trying them, then perhaps offer a bone for just five or ten minutes and then take it away, try again a day or two later. Avoid any sudden changes and if there are any problems just hold off. Once they are used to it, a bone once a month is good. Marrow bones can be full of fat, so factor this in if your dog is on a diet — to the extent that the day the dog has a bone there is no other food offered to compensate. If your dog cannot cope with bones then there are many

commercially available products that can be good to chew on and effective at keeping teeth clean. These include VeggieDents, Greenies, Dentistix and many others. And then the gold standard for keeping dogs’ teeth clean and healthy — daily brushing. Nowhere near as daunting as it sounds. There are small thimble type brushes for small dogs, and chicken flavour toothpaste helps too. In conclusion — bones are good if your dog can cope with them, and keeping teeth clean is of paramount importance. ¢

Pets & Equine ADVERTORIAL
Managing fleas all year round! by Yolande Howell BVSc(Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre
In the past, flea treatment has been viewed as a seasonal need over the warmer months in spring and summer. Now with our homes warm all year round and our pets inside, flea treatment needs to be managed all year round. While no one likes to have to think about fleas, preventative management of fleas is recommended for your pet’s and family’s health. Once fleas have established themselves in your home, they are difficult to get rid of. Not treating for fleas during winter can allow flea eggs to build up in your home, resulting in an ‘outbreak’ when temperatures increase and the eggs hatch. There are four stages in the life cycle of a flea: egg, larva, pupa (cocoon), and adult. Depending on the environmental temperature and humidity levels, the total life cycle will take anywhere from a few weeks to many months. Optimal conditions for fleas are between 21
and 30°C, and 70% humidity. This is why fleas exist in our warm home environment all year round. During autumn and winter, when the temperature is well below 21°C, many immature fleas will remain dormant, particularly as pupae (in cocoons that are very hardy), waiting in the carpet, furniture and bedding of the pet’s environment. Once it becomes warm again, adult fleas will hatch from pupae and infest pets. Pets will also pick up fleas when out in the garden or on a walk, so it is important to give them the best protection. There are now many effective new products to control fleas with active ingredients which work by killing fleas and breaking the flea cycle. There are topical treatments where you
apply on skin on the back of your pet’s neck. Oral tablets and chews for dogs and cats are also available for flea and tick protection. These products vary in duration of action from four weeks to six months. Best to speak to
your vet about what option would suit you and your lifestyle best. There is also an effective and safe flea collar on the market providing flea protection for up to eight months. Now it’s easier than ever to manage fleas all year round.

And with a couple of latches pulled, back pops a third row that feels as comfy as the first two, with its own dedicated air-con vents and a 12 volt charger for the ubiquitous tablet or phone. So far, so good — but what’s the extra special feature which turns another successfully practical Santa Fe into something more? Well, it’s the fact that this all new, sharper looking model has been made lighter and given a velocitous punch, with a choice of a 2.4 petrol, a 3

Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor? With smart use of space, and a factor not found in many large seven seaters — that’s how. When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings. From the ‘floating’ centre console which allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink cans as well as American-sized drivethru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up. The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing should there be something in the way) opens to reveal enough space to stow a small castle siege’s worth of supplies. The
