p Visitors to Canterbury Museum’s Quake City exhibition view the toppled spire from the Christchurch Cathedral
The Canterbury Museum special exhibition will waive its usual entry fee for visitors on Saturday and Sunday. The exhibition is designed to take visitors through the events of the Canterbury earthquakes, from the first shake on September 4 2010, which was centred near Hororata, through the destruction and rescue efforts of February 22 2011, and the clean-up and rebuild over subsequent years. Almost 250,000 visitors have seen Quake City since it opened in February 2013, including 51,000 since it moved from Cashel Mall to 299 Durham Street North in September 2017. Canterbury
Museum director, Anthony Wright, hopes Selwyn locals take advantage of this opportunity to see how the museum presents the events they’ve lived through. “Quake City is a safe place for Cantabrians to remember and reflect on their own earthquake experiences. I hope they take the opportunity to visit the exhibition for free,” he said. Quake City exhibits some of the defining objects of the Canterbury earthquakes, including top of the spire of Christchurch Cathedral, as well as items like road cones, water containers and portaloos that were part of many Cantabrians’ lives post-earthquake. ¢

The Malvern arts community is mourning the loss of one of its driving forces Moreen Eason who passed away recently. Born in Leeds, England she developed an enduring love for drama, particularly because of her participating in third and fourth form school productions. Mr Rollinson said in support of the show there will be exhibitions from the Darfield Garden Club and the Sheffield Garden Club, while the Springston Floral Art Group is mounting a floral display in the foyer. He said while many of the exhibitors will be long-time competitors, there is a chance for locals to be involved. “There is an opportunity for the local community to participate in nonmember classes with classes for three stems daffodils in one vase, one yellow petalled daffodil, one white petalled daffodil and one miniature daffodil.” He said people can bring their flowers to the Darfield Recreation Centre either on the Friday afternoon prior to the competition or Saturday morning before 9am, and Daffodil Society members will be there to help with their entries.
“On Sunday afternoon a workshop open to the public will be given on growing daffodils,” Mr Rollinson said. “Daffodils are not just the yellow flowers you see in clumps in parks and gardens, but come in all shapes, from the traditional yellow trumpets to flowers with white petalled and small red cups, to full double camelliastyle flowers. “Petal colours can be yellow, white green and pink and cups colour can vary from yellow, orange, red and pink. Synlait Milk names new chief executive

Dunsandel-based Synlait Milk has appointed former managing director of Fonterra Brands New Zealand, Leon Clement, as its new chief executive officer in mid-August. The company says the appointment is the outcome of a global recruitment search undertaken following co-founder and inaugural CEO John Penno’s announcement late last year of his intention to stand down. Having held numerous senior leadership positions throughout his career, Mr Clement said he was excited by the opportunities Synlait had created and is looking forward to taking on the role of CEO. “I’m passionate about New Zealand agriculture, and growing people and businesses in a sustainable way,” Clement said. “That’s why I’m so excited to be joining the Synlait team at such a pivotal time. The progress to date is impressive and under John’s leadership Synlait has achieved some significant milestones, which have set the business up well for the next phase of growth. The business is in fantastic shape, and we will continue to target sustainable growth

The play offers a witty, irreverent and pointed glimpse of small-town people and values, but with a twist. The three main characters are witches, and amid local gossip, scandal and sorcery they seek the perfect relationship by any means, conjuring up the perfect man ‘Darryl’...or is he...? The West Melton Playcentre is getting ready for the new while saying farewell to one of its longest-serving staff members.
p West Melton Playcentre coordinator Pam Higgins is stepping down after more than 25 years of involvement with the centre
Playcentre coordinator, Pam Higgins, is leaving after almost 30 years of being involved with the early childhood education centre, which takes children up to the age of six. A parent since 1990 and coordinator since 1999, Pam has decided to retire after and hand over the reins. Playcentre’s, Fiona Giles, said Pam will be sorely missed. “We held a goodbye party for her in July, which was well attended by Playcentre families past and present. “Capably filling Pam’s shoes is new coordinator, Linda Weed. She brings with her a wealth of experience, having worked with Playcentre for 17 years in a variety of capacities. We warmly welcome Linda and look forward to
working, learning and playing together.” Meanwhile, the Playcentre is readying itself for its move into the new West Melton Community Centre, which is currently under construction. “Construction is progressing rapidly and it will soon be ready for move-in day,” Ms Giles said. “We will have a large, spacious room with a sunny deck and a dedicated garden. The children love to peek through the fence to watch the diggers and trucks at work. “We are busy with cleaning, clearing out and organising in time for the big move, later this year, and we are looking forward to showing everyone around at an open day once we get settled in.” ¢

For its August exhibition, the Selwyn Gallery has reached outside the district to invite some of its neighbours north of the Waimakariri River to exhibit their work.
The ar tworks range from watercolours to mixed media to pottery — with potter Gael Abraham along with artists Quilliam Collister, Frederika Ernsten and Paul Smith exhibiting their work. Malvern Community Arts Council arts coordinator, Katrina Ellis, said the exhibition, entitled Our Waimak Neighbours promises a wide variety of subjects for the viewer. “Gael Abraham started pottery in 2003 with the Mount Pleasant Pottery group, and loves the range and scale that can be achieved at the potter’s wheel,” Ms Ellis said. “Quilliam Collister has worked in pencil and pen and ink for more than 30 years, gradually converting to watercolour over this period. “Frederika Ernsten has been active as an artist, gallery manager and teacher and her main interest is the use of colour, form and function in domestic pieces that people enjoy using.” Ms Ernsten’s work is shown in many public and private collections, including in embassies in Brussels and Tokyo, and has been selected as presents to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Christchurch’s sister city, Kurashiki in Japan. Meanwhile, Paul Smith’s distinctive mixed media abstract art has won many awards, and he has completed several successful commissions. His large, colourful works can be found in businesses, show homes and private residences. Selwyn Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of the show. Tight at the top in Selwyn netball u by Kent Caddick
This year’s Selwyn premier netball competition is shaping up to be one of the closest contests in years. Many Selwyn netball fans in recent years will have become used to watching the Lincoln juggernaut roll the competition on its way to the final and the title. However, this season is different and with two games into the final round robin section of the competition all six teams are separated by a single point. Defending champions Lincoln, which lost to Greenpark B the previous weekend, bounced back to take the win over division newcomers Rolleston, which had upset competition leaders Broadfield the previous Saturday. After trailing for most of the match, Lincoln came from behind in the final quarter to take the points 52–49. Meanwhile, Broadfield responded to its loss to Rolleston with a fairly comfortable 58–43 win over Southbridge in the late game at the Lincoln Event Centre. Southbridge had held the title contenders in the first quarter, but
EITHER WAY IT’S 20K
Broadfield, playing with an experienced and settled line-up, pulled away to take the match and now sit second on the points table on goal differential to Greenpark A. Greenpark A was untroubled in downing the club’s B team 75–41 to sit top of the table. All six teams have a win and a loss after two rounds with Greenpark, Broadfield and Rolleston all on five points thanks to picking up a bonus point. In the Premier two grade West Melton and Prebbleton sit on top with eight points after the weekend’s action. West Melton beat third placed Southbridge B 45–43 while Prebbleton edged Lincoln B 46–43 to open up a three point gap at the top of the table. Malvern picked up its first win of the final round-robin round with a 47–43 win over Broadfield B in the other match played in the Premier two grade. ¢

Following its success in making the semi-finals of the combined Canterbury Country club competition earlier in the season, Springston has now booked a place in the semis of the Ellesmere competition. Its place in the semis was confirmed on Saturday when it knocked over defending champions Southbridge in the final round robin match of competition. The 22–12 win at Southbridge Domain meant Springston edged into the top four by virtue of finishing one point clear of the combined Burnham Dunsandel Irwell side, despite BDI’s 53– 20 thumping of Rolleston on Saturday afternoon. Combined Country champs Waihora finished the round robin
competition in first place after a 12–0 win over Darfield in a top of the table clash at Darfield Domain on Saturday. Waihora dominated the possession and territory statistics in the first half, running in two tries to lead 12–0 at the break. While Darfield reversed those stats in the second spell, it crucially couldn’t make any impression on the scoreboard and will now face Prebbleton in the semis, while Waihora will host Springston in the other semi. In the other match of the final round, West Melton recorded its first win of the season, a 31–10 victory over woodenspooners Hornby. ¢

The life of Anne Frank Selwyn residents are being invited to attend the latest travelling exhibition at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Hornby. The exhibition, Let Me Be Myself, is the life story of Anne Frank, which is touring New Zealand to challenge prejudice and racism. Anne Frank was a German-born diarist and one of the most high profile Jewish victims of the Holocaust in World War II. She gained fame posthumously with the publication of The Diary of a Young Girl in which she documented her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German occupation of the Netherlands. She and her family were eventually discovered, and Anne and her sister Margot ended up in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where they died. The Let Me Be Myself exhibition was created by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and has already visited 80 countries and been seen by more than 10 million people globally. It arrived in New Zealand in 2018 and opened at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in January, where it engaged more than 35,000 visitors in just three short months. Using a combination of excerpts from Anne Frank’s famous

diary, historical artefacts, pictures, video and testimony, the exhibition walks you through the life of the Frank family and the history of the era, before engaging visitors in discussion about how the same themes affect the modern world. Including the experiences of teenagers today, the exhibition talks about disability, prejudice, homophobia and racism in the 21st Century and challenges the visitor to examine their own core moral values. With additional material bringing the Kiwi experience into sharp focus and an education programme for schools designed by HCNZ, the exhibition aims to promote tolerance and good citizenship in New Zealand. The educational programme, which forms part of the exhibition, provides peer educators (year 11–13 students) from various Christchurch schools to guide each school group through the exhibition. The exhibition will be at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand until September 21. ¢

Have a Go Day is designed to showcase the sport and recreation activities Darfield and the wider Selwyn district has to offer. In 2017 this event, which was held in Lincoln, saw more than 1,200 people giving sports, activities and games a go. This year’s event will be held at the Darfield Recreation Centre and domain on Sunday, August 26. There will be a huge variety of indoor and outdoor sports, activities, games and challenges on offer including squash, basketball, archery, golf, softball, bowls and more. To keep the crowd going there will be coffee, a sausage sizzle, and music as well as a competition with prizes on offer. Attendees can complete a ‘Have a Go Day’ passport at the event for a chance to win one of three sport vouchers valued at $150, $100 and $50. New SUVs achieve top safety ratings u Article supplied by the AA
Volvo and Mazda’s new SUVs have hit the New Zealand market with 5-star safety ratings from the Australasia New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) in spite of increased testing standards. Volvo’s first small SUV, the Volvo XC40, and the seven-seater Mazda CX-8 performed well across various crash scenarios and tests, providing high standards of safety for drivers, passengers and pedestrians. For the first time, the safety testing included testing the performance and effectiveness of safety assist technologies, and the ability for the vehicles to protect a broader range of occupants, including children. AA Motoring Services General Manager, Stella Stocks, says it’s fantastic that the first vehicles tested against ANCAP’s new standards achieved top safety ratings. “It’s great to see Volvo and Mazda setting the new standard for vehicle safety,” she says. “SUVs are a popular choice for families, so it’s fantastic that in both cases the vehicles were able to achieve high ratings when more thoroughly tested for child occupant safety.” Both models have autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist (LKA) and a seatbelt reminder system.

The Volvo XC40 also has emergency lane keeping (ELK), which intervenes more aggressively than its LKA in emergency situations to keep the SUV on the road or from hitting another vehicle. The Volvo XC40 achieved 84% overall for child occupant protection, with perfect scores for the dynamic tests with ANCAP’s new 6-year-old and 10-year-old child dummies. The
Mazda CX-8 achieved 87% for child occupant protection and 96% for adult occupant protection. The full list of ANCAP’s vehicle safety ratings, other vehicle safety information and the specifications of the rated vehicles are available online at ancap. co.nz or rightcar.govt.nz. ¢
