Windwhistle School’s adventures P5

Soldier follows family tradition

A simple question can stop you in your tracks …

p The students, and teachers, along with their families from Windwhistle School, actively participate in various outdoor activities during the year. In winter they make the most of the snow and travel to Mt Hutt ski field where they not only discover the different techniques needed for skiing, but also the responsibilities of being on the mountain, the dangers they may face and how to keep safe. Principal Bronwen Seaward believes it is important to teach children the different aspects of the environment they live in and utilises the opportunities available throughout the year as part of the students’ education. The latest addition to the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust fleet had its first mission on Friday. The H145 helicopter is one of two new air ambulances for the southern region. The other is based in Dunedin, and the choppers are fast becoming a world-class aeromedical service for New Zealand. “It was very exciting to watch the crew head off on the first rescue mission with the new H145, the first emergency rescue helicopter of this type in New Zealand,” said CEO Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust, Christine Prince. “The helicopter was dispatched at 14.00 to Porter Heights to a 16-year-

The H145 has a larger cabin area for greater manoeuvrability and better patient care, and the avionics are cutting edge and have enhanced safety features. ”Other missions over the weekend included two in Methven and others in

The fifth Sefton Riding Centre Primary Schools Show Jumping Competition is set for Sunday, September 15. “We run the riding centre and started the competition for primary school children when a community member died in an accident as a way to fundraise for her family,” says centre manager Nicola Grigg. “Last year we had 22 teams come along from across the Canterbury region, and it was a very successful day. We have had people from Darfield and across the different areas join together to make up a team. It is the only primary school competition that I am aware of and is designed especially for young riders from years one to eight. Anyone can enter including children who don’t jump — they can come along and do an obstacle course or lead their ponies if they don’t ride.” The day consists of show jumping and obstacle courses with the older children competing at higher jump heights in the afternoon. “There is the Alana Adams Memorial Trophy as well as the Sefton Riding Centre trophy. It is a great opportunity for children to compete as a team from other riders from their school as normally — it is an individual sport. “The day is very relaxed, and riders from different areas can join together.

The event is exciting and builds confidence and comradery. It puts big smiles on the faces of the competitors and spectators alike and is a fun day out for both horsey and non-horsey to come and enjoy. p Mike McLintock, St John ICP Suzanne Galloway and pilot Kent Wilson were the crew on the H145 air ambulance’s first mission last week

The aircraft’s capabilities allowed it to hover automatically at the push of a button while its terrain awareness system means if it is over water, it will come down to 150ft and won’t go any further until a command is put in. “There are two rescue helicopters based in Christchurch so the crew can respond in a timely way when multiple calls come through,” said Christine. “It is amazing to have this level of service, in rural areas like the Selwyn district — it really does make a difference. “It can be the only way to get to a patient, to start treatment and get them to the hospital. During the day

the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is despatched within 10 minutes and at night within 20 minutes.” “We are very grateful to have sponsors and supporters. Without them, this service would just not be able to operate at this level and provide the ‘safety net’ it does, across the region. “Many of our supporters have put up their hands and simply been there to help over the years. “We have this new helicopter, and we need the assistance of everyone to keep it in the air so we can be there day and night when needed. Windwhistle School’s adventures u by Ann van Engelen

As part of their yearly school activities, the students at Windwhistle School travel to Mt Hutt for ski lessons and family time during term three. “The whole school goes to these events and are given one and a halfhour ski lessons by the Mt Hutt ski instructors. We work in conjunction with Mt Hutt and have six ski days with back up days if the weather doesn’t allow,” says Principal Bronwen Seaward. “Parents transport the children to the mountain as part of our education outside the classroom programme. We do this to give the children experience and being so close to the facilities, it makes sense to utilise the opportunity. At present, they are also learning about mountain safety and other aspects of the environment.” Each visit the families are able to stay at the ski fields until closing allowing

them to have time together and socialise with others. “That gives them the opportunity to practise and have fun. We have children up to year six, and some of our students can now ski on all terrain and participate at competition level because they have been learning through school for a few years now. “We have a very unique programme here and like to share what we do with our community. We have a golf tournament every year, and the board helps fund the ski programme, so it is a minimal cost for the families. We firmly believe in using our local environment as part of our learning programme as we live in a unique position in the world.” ¢

Children and adults exhibit u by Ann van Engelen

Students from Creative Sparks in Darfield have joined together to exhibit at the Selwyn Gallery from August 9 until August 29.

A simple question can change the course of your life, and it did so for Lance Corporal Samuel Puke who was 19 and at a loose end after finishing high school when a friend asked, “Why don’t you just do what your dad did?” His father, Sergeant Larnie Puke, had served from 1985 to 2001 in the New Zealand Army’s Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, so Samuel sought out similar service, and it became a family affair. Born in Lincoln, Lance Corporal Puke started his intermediate education at Darfield High School, before moving to school in Brisbane. Now he is one of the army’s newest Junior Non-Commissioned Officers and recently completed 11 weeks of leadership training at Burnham Military Camp to receive the Regimental Award for high standards on the course. Family ties to the military are strong with his brother, Private Josh Puke, in the same platoon, and extended family member Warrant Officer Class 1 Douglas Puke serving in the reserve force. A keen rugby player he loves that the army requires soldiers to maintain peak physical health. “Getting paid to keep fit is an amazing part of the job,” he said. “After six years, I still can’t believe I get paid to go to the gym.” Lance Corporal Puke is looking forward to being back in the platoon at Burnham and seeing where his new leadership skills will take him next. “What I’ve found is that if you put in the effort, nine times out of 10, you’ll do

“The opening of the exhibition was a great success. The gallery was packed with students, proud parents, grandparents and friends. Some children were thrilled with sales on the night,” says Creative Sparks manager Vicky Peacock. “Our music students performed brilliantly in front of more than 60 people, and I am grateful that they have been offered such an amazing opportunity. Exhibiting gives people confidence, and we have worked on a couple of collaborative projects together. One is the Dot Tree, which was inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H Reynolds. Every dot representing each

individual of the studio and how they are special in their own way. The tree represents growth and collaboration. “We share facilities with TM Dance World and are fully equipped with quality art equipment. Our eldest art student is in their 70s. We teach children at our Monday and Thursday after school classes while our adult classes are on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings. “I enjoy seeing students have their individual spin on each piece of work and encourage this as I don’t want to see exactly the same picture — I want individual personalities to come through.” ¢

The team at Selwyn Sports Trust are bringing back the Have A Go Day at the West Melton Community Centre and Domain on Sunday, August 25 from midday to 3pm. “We have a postponement day of September 1. The day is to provide the community with a range of physical activity to try such as bowls, group fitness, badminton, and basketball,” says Selwyn Sports Trust organiser Amy McClintock. “The Hororata Highland Games team will be coming to do a show. At 1.30pm there will be a junior warrior have a go competition at Highland Games including porridge eating, haggis hurling and the farmers carry — it will be a lot of fun. “It is great for families to come and spend the afternoon. There is football, touch and a variety of other sports for all ages and abilities. These events showcase what Selwyn has to offer with no obligation to sign up.”

The event is free, and there will be food and coffee available for purchase including a sausage sizzle by the West Melton Scouts. “We also have, Try it out Tuesdays, a new initiative for children aged approximately six to nine years old. It is a chance to experience summer sports options and see what is available for them to participate now or in the future. ”It is often their first experience at a sport, and we provide a very inclusive and encouraging environment. Library service hits the road

Darfield Four Square opens

u by Ann van Engelen

u by Mike Isle

Residents of Castle Hill, Windwhistle and Arthur’s Pass were the first to try out the Selwyn District Council’s new Edge Connector service, bringing popular programmes and resources to those who don’t have easy access to a library.

Darfield’s revamped and renewed Four Square is now officially open.

7

p The Edge Connector will visit communities across the Selwyn District at least 15 kilometres from a library

The especially kitted out vehicle is designed to target communities and schools that are at least 15 kilometres from a library. “The service is designed to be cost-effective, efficient and flexible in what it provides, so it can bring things the whole community want but would otherwise be difficult to access,” says Community Services and Facilities group manager, Denise Kidd. “We want to make sure those communities across the district without easy access to a physical library have similar opportunities to others, whether through education on our online resources or bringing a specific programme that caters to a group of residents of the particular community.”

Visits to communities such as Springfield, Dunsandel, Southbridge, Hororata, Greendale, Glentunnel and Sheffield will begin in the next few weeks. The Edge Connector is fitted with WiFi, computers, a printer and scanner. “We had the connector to visit, and it was really exciting for the community. Matt, the librarian, had story time with the younger students and explained graphics with the seniors,” said Windwhistle School principal Bronwen Seaward. “Community members came along and learned how to use e-books as well. It is a great way to connect our children with the library services as we are a great distance to the nearest library.” ¢

p Kelvin and Delwyn Taege (centre) surrounded by staff, family and friends at the official opening of the new Darfield Four Square

For owners Kelvin and Delwyn Taege, it was the culmination of months of planning. The Taege family has run the business for almost four decades. The new premises are the first to roll-out electronic shelf labels, LED lighting and two self-checkouts and the supermarket is also twice the size of the previous supermarket and has more than 70 car parks. Kelvin Taege said there was a “real buzz” from customers entering the store for the first time. “The opening was a huge success! We had around 100 people come out

and join us in the morning for the opening celebration.” “Our shoppers love the full product range the store has, and many were thrilled they could finally get their hands on a Lotto ticket or two. The selfcheckouts were also a big hit and were in use the minute the doors opened — everyone wanted to give them a go. “It’s been great to see the benefits of the ESL, as a lot of the products on special have been racing out the door, which means we’ve been on our toes keeping shelves stocked for happy customers.” ¢

can house between 10,000 to 80,000 bees in spring and summer. During autumn the numbers reduce and in winter they can drop back to 10,000. “A strong hive depends on a good queen and good hive management. In New Zealand, we have the active and lively Carniolan black honey bee and the Italian strain, which is an amber colour and more docile to work with. All bees are hard-working, but in winter depending on external temperatures and weather conditions they start work later in the day when it is warmer. They forage for floral resources such as gorse, which is extremely high in pollen. “The foragers explore continuously looking for nectar and pollen and often die of exhaustion. Nectar is released from flowers when it is above 20

degrees, but this year winter was mild, so the nectar has flowed, and we are getting honey. The foragers cast their bounty back to the nurse bees who store it and feed the growing larvae and brood — thus the cycle continues. “The queen bee’s scent determines social behaviour, maintenance of the hive, swarming, mating behaviour, inhibition of ovary development in worker bees, communication, orientation and defence and much more. “The drones are male bees, and their primary

function is to mate with virgin queens of other hives, they are only found in hives in spring and summer and do not have a stinger. The worker bees are females that lack reproductive capacity and have many roles within the hive — cleaning, making wax, nursery duties, water gatherers, pollen and nectar foragers and guarding the hive. “It is definitely the best hobby I have ever had and people everywhere can have bees. It is exciting when you finally reach your utopia, and my utopia is bees.”

Spring pet checks at home by Yolande B. Howell BVSc(HONS), Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Spring is a busy time of year for everyone, including our pets. We are spending more time outdoors, and so are they. Our pets are meeting and greeting other animals more frequently, so the likelihood of disease spread is higher, ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations! Potential hazards to pets during spring and summertime may also include: Heat. Pets die in hot cars! It only takes 10 minutes, and the temperature inside your car can double. Hot surfaces such as concrete, tarmac or even hot sand can burn your pet’s feet so best avoided. Exposure to the sun can cause heat exhaustion; this can be prevented by making sure your pets have some shade and shelter and plenty of freshwater available. Insects. We are starting to see more bees, flies and spiders with the warmer weather. Bees do sting animals if bothered, so if you see your pet chasing bees, try and distract them and take your pet away. If they do get stung, take them to see your vet. Other creepy crawlies such as spiders and flies can bite pets, so check your pet every day for any swelling, lumps or bumps. Plants. Toxic flowers such as lilies and foxgloves start to blossom in spring. There is a huge number of plants that can be toxic to pets when ingested; the internet is a good place to

start learning about them. Grass seeds are also plentiful; they can penetrate under the skin or get lodged in the ear canals. If your pet is showing any signs of discomfort, make sure to take them to your vet for a thorough examination. External parasites. It is that time of year where fleas are rife. Prevention is always better than cure, there is a wide range of products, and they all work a little differently. So ask your vet for the best flea preventative for your pets.

Fleas are best prevented before your pet brings them inside your house because they are there to stay! Ticks are also another external parasite we should check our pets for. If you suspect or see a tick on your pet, let your vet know as soon as possible. Internal parasites. Worms are always a threat but more so during warmer weather. Treat according to your vet’s recommendation. Poisons. Please keep your pets away from weed killers, snail and slug baits, ant baits and rat poison. Do not allow your pet to eat fertilisers or composts — they can also make them very ill. For people with hay fever, they may suffer more during spring, and pets who suffer from allergies may be worse this time of year also. I recommend checking your pets at home daily. Many of these checks can be done whilst giving your pet cuddles at the end of your busy day. Enjoy the outdoors!

Pets & Equine ADVERTORIAL

Itchy sore, smelly ears

as h orse p

Ear disease commonly affects both cats and dogs — dogs especially are prone to getting sore, inflamed ears. Ears are incredibly sensitive, and pets we see at Darfield Vetent clinic for ear disease are often in a significant amount of pain. Signs of sore ears include: frequent head shaking, scratching the ears and rubbing ears on the ground. The dog may suddenly go deaf. The inner ear flap (or pinna) will be red and very sensitive to touch. There will often be a distinctive smell, either of yeast or of pus. In chronic cases, the skin on the inside of the pinna may appear thickened and wrinkled (like elephant skin). However, some dogs show very few signs other than redness. So why is this so common? A normal ear has skin lining the ear canal all the way to the eardrum and has some bacteria and yeasts present. When this skin becomes damaged in some way (eg through allergy, chronic wetness, lack of airflow), the yeast and bacteria population explode and take over. The skin layer then becomes inflamed and infected and swells as a response. Instead of being a lovely open canal, this space dramatically narrows, leading to a further loss of airflow and traps any bacteria, yeast and fluid within the space. It then becomes a vicious cycle whereby conditions are perfect for further bacteria to thrive. In addition, the ear canals of cats and dogs go down and then curve in, meaning that debris and water easily get trapped due to gravity as well. Treatment involves applying topical solutions within the ear, usually a combination of antifungals, antibiotics and steroids. It deals with the overgrowth of bacteria and yeast and reduces the inflammation to allow the canal skin to heal.

around road works However, ongoing ear maintenance is frequently required to prevent reoccurring infections. That may be regular ear washing with a commercial ear cleaner, designed to break up ear debris. In other cases, it means control of skin allergies or ear plucking. As this can be a painful and frustrating disease, prevention of ear infections is the best policy.
