The Selwyn Central Arts Council, or Arts Heart, is calling for entries into the inaugural Senior High School Student Art Exhibition in October. Council chair Rails Mackey said it is the first time they have run an event specifically aimed at student artists. “We have our annual art exhibition and exhibitions are what we do well but we wanted to have something that would encourage younger artists to exhibit their work,” she said. “We noticed that only occasionally would young artists dare to enter our annual exhibition and if they did it was usually because either their parents or some close relative had pushed them into it.” The exhibition is open to senior students from Years 11 to 13. Mrs Mackey said they have been in contact with the high schools in Selwyn but also want to reach out to those students who go to school in Christchurch and other areas. “It’s open to any senior student living in Selwyn — they don’t have to go to school in the district just live here.” To incentivise the students the exhibition entry fee of $10 will be pooled and will be given to a winner who will be selected by the viewing public. “The winner will be determined through a ‘people’s choice’ selection, not by us at Hearts Art. That means the artist with the most popular piece of work will get all the entry money.” She said they have scheduled the event for early October during the school

Selwyn artist Bridget Carr is using the act of creating art to help people with memory loss.

 Therapeutic art class coordinator Bridget Carr believes creating art can help people suffering from memory loss

Mrs Carr, who is a facilitator for The Laura Fergusson Trust residential facility therapeutic art classes in Christchurch, is holding a free five-week therapeutic art class at the Rolleston Community Centre. She said the sessions aim to encourage memory recall through the process of creating art. “Everyone has a creative aspect, even if they haven’t focussed on art since school days. I believe the creative reawakening through art can be beneficial for those with memory loss. “It is about keeping the brain active as the act of creation helps people to focus. The end work doesn’t really matter it is the act itself which is beneficial.” She said the classes are beneficial not just to the elderly but anyone who

has suffered memory loss, possibly through an accident. “The classes will interest those who are keen to relax, enjoy, share experiences and socialise while stimulating the mind through creative expression.” The sessions will take place at the Rolleston Community Centre on Thursdays from 1.30 to 2.30pm, beginning August 31, with the final class on September 28. “Places are limited and we encourage those interested in attending to register by Wednesday, August 30. Depending on the uptake for the class, further sessions may be planned in Selwyn,” For more information or to register, people can contact Bridget Carr on 347 3577 or 021 248 4315. 

Trees for schools  by Kent Caddick

Schools around Selwyn have been the beneficiaries of a Lincoln Envirotown Trust initiative to get fruit trees into the district’s primary schools. The Fruit Trees into Schools programme is now into its third year and is the result of a collaboration between Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET) and Selwyn businessman Alan Peacock, with support from Aaron Bartlett of The Outdoor Space, who provides the trees. LET project manager Dave Fitzjohn said the project was initiated for five years and has another two years to run. “This year the team went beyond the call of duty as they headed out into possibly the worst morning weather conditions of the year. “Despite encountering snow at Windwhistle and flooded roads around Darfield, by the end of the day all the trees had been delivered to the planned recipients.” Mr Fitzjohn said the trust would like to thank both Aaron and Alan for their roles in driving the initiative along. “We have also had a number of local businesses come on board who have made significant contributions

Consultation on speed limit changes

Levi Park gets smart New Zealand’s first Smart Playground has opened in Rolleston bringing a new kind of fun to the town’s Levi Park.

The Selwyn District Council is to consult locals on proposed speed limit changes which would introduce lower speed limits on a number of roads across the district.

 Local residents are to be consulted on possible speed limit changes around townships like West Melton

The proposals include extending 50kmh and 70kmh zones on the outskirts of several townships, and introducing an 80kmh limit on rural roads adjoining the Christchurch city boundary, including Maddisons Rd and extending out to Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Rolleston. The 80kmh speed limit on rural roads in the Prebbleton area would also be extended out to Lincoln and Rolleston. The proposed changes follow a review of speed limits across the district carried out by council staff. In his report to council, SDC roading

engineer Mark Chamberlain said the proposed changes reflect the growth in population and traffic volumes in many Selwyn townships. “The roads reviewed included those requested by residents, committees and councillors, as well as others identified by staff. “ Townships where lower speed limits are proposed to be extended include Castle Hill, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston, Rolleston Izone, and West Melton. The proposed changes are expected to go out for public consultation next month. 

council or playground manager wanting to add a new digital dimension to their existing playgrounds.” At the end of the trial period council will assess whether to incorporate the Smart Playground technology at other playgrounds in Selwyn. At Levi Park six augmented reality markers are attached to the existing playground equipment, which can be easily scanned by parents and children to activate mini-games and unlock new play content aimed at three to nineyear olds. Parents can download the games free from the App Store or on Google Play, by searching for ‘playbiba’. To play, the parent or caregiver holds their phone with a Biba game open, issuing playful instructions based on an imaginary premise (like, ‘you’re a secret agent’) while the child follows them. The child spends most of their session time playing away from the phone on playground equipment based on game directives. They then return to the phone intermittently to perform a game function, complete a mini game or advance their progress through the game’s imaginary scenario.  Rolleston St John will be the beneficiaries of an indoor bowling tournament fundraiser

The exhibition at the gallery in Darfield will open this Friday and run for a week. Malvern Community Arts Council arts administrator Rose Gerard said the children are extremely excited about sharing their work with their families and the community. “Annabel’s is a long-time supporter of Darfield Artweek and we are proud to host this exhibition for them. “ She said various individual and group projects will be on display. “Annabel’s are continually working to improve their recycling and sustainable practices so they have used recycled

items in many of the pieces of work,” Ms Gerard said. “The children have amazed and inspired their teachers as they have come up with some very creative ideas.” The work by the children, aged between two and four, falls into two categories, one entitled ‘In my Imagination’ and the other the children’s interpretation of the Maori legend of how Maui slowed the sun. Meanwhile, the gallery’s next monthly exhibition will open on September 1. The exhibition, entitled ‘Surrealists — What Dreams May Come’, will feature work by Jinx in the Sky, Dave Pearson, and John Burns. 

The fundraising event will this year be held at the Rolleston Community Centre on the evening of September 16 with all proceeds going to Rolleston St John. Organiser Walter Town said last year was the first time they ran the event. “We had seen the success of a similar event being run in Darfield and we wanted to emulate this,” Mr Town said. “We were delighted to be able to raise $1,200 last year and are hoping to at least match that this year. “This evening is to show St John’s how much we appreciate the time and effort that they go to helping us in our time of need in this expanding district. Mr Town said the event is not just for experienced indoor bowlers and

that there would be help on the night for novices. “We wanted it to be a family orientated event and last year we had a number of families involved.” People can enter a team of four bowlers but only two are able to be experienced bowlers. “In that way we are ensuring everyone has fun which, as well as raising money for a good cause, is what the event is about.” Mr Town said also up for grabs on the night is the St John Challenge Trophy for the best team uniform. Spiders threatened Research being done at Lincoln University indicates that climate change may threaten one of our more reclusive native animals, the trapdoor spider.

Rolleston College on the road Rolleston College has embarked on its first away sporting trip, with its Year 9 boys’ rugby team travelling to Blenheim to play Marlborough Boys’ College.

 New Zealand’s native trapdoor spider is under threat from climate change

Trapdoor spiders are found throughout New Zealand, springing out from their concealed burrows to capture prey. While carrying out her PhD research at Lincoln Dr Vikki Smith found current models of future climate change in New Zealand do not bode well for trapdoor spider populations especially on the West Coast and in Tasman, as well as parts of Otago and Southland. Dr Smith said the regions are all predicted to see increased rainfall which makes an area less suitable as a habitat for trapdoor spiders. “The spiders were more likely to be present where the rainfall was below 1,000mm per year, and no populations were found in areas with more than 3,000mm per year,” Dr Smith said. She said the full extent of

the impact of losing trapdoor spiders cannot be predicted, due to their many complex and unknown interactions with the environment. “They are vital parts of their ecosystems in that they control insect populations, provide food for birds and lizards, and are hosts for at least three different parasites. Losing trapdoor spiders would remove a food source for native animals which may put increased pressure on their other food sources, particularly spiders,” Dr Smith said. She said climate change could also threaten other species. “It’s hard to tell what effect climate change will have on our native species, but marine and coastal species are most likely to be affected due to changes in sea level and temperature, according to climate models.” 

 The Rolleston College rugby team gets a half-time pep talk in the match against Marlborough Boys’ College

Rolleston’s first high school was opened in February of this year. Principal Steve Saville said the trip was a significant event for the college as it was their first away trip for sport. “We are hoping that next year Marlborough will bring a tour party down to Rolleston College as part of an annual sports exchange, which we are really excited about. “It was a great game to watch and we are very proud of our boys for stepping up to the challenge. “Also, we must give a massive thank you to New World Rolleston for supplying all the food to feed 19 boys for two days,” Mr Saville said.

The Rolleston College team started well in the match against the Marlborough boys’ U14 team and took an early 14-point lead. Marlborough came back strongly and took the lead at half time. The second half was a great spectacle with both teams attacking from deep and showing good handling skills in wet conditions. With 10 minutes to go Rolleston went ahead from an excellent solo try by number 8 Jake Pluck. However, a late surge by Marlborough saw the home side score two more tries to take the inaugural encounter 46-36. 

Lincoln has opened up a four point gap at the top of the Selwyn premier netball competition with a win over Greenpark in a top of the table clash on Saturday.

 Lincoln wing attack Tyler Rollo looks for support

 Greenpark’s Amy McClintoch pulls in a pass

Greenpark, which came into the match level on points with Lincoln, started the game in fine form, racing out to a 9-3 lead over the defending champions who had yet to taste defeat this season. But as the first quarter rolled on Lincoln slowly clawed back the deficit and by the end of the quarter had edged in front 15-13. Lincoln continued to press in the second quarter and by halftime had extended its lead to 34-26 with centre Char Porima and wing attack Tyler Rollo providing swift ball into the Lincoln shooting circle. Greenpark never gave up the fight but Lincoln continued to extend its lead with goal shoot Hannah Wilson in top form.

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

Lincoln led 55-42 by the end of the third quarter and while Greenpark was able to match Lincoln goal for goal in the final quarter it could not claw its way back with Lincoln going on to win 68-55. Broadfield and Southbridge moved into playoff contention with wins over Halswell and West Melton respectively. Southbridge edged West Melton 48-30 while Broadfield dominated Halswell to run out winners 69-36. This coming weekend’s match between Southbridge and Greenpark will play a major factor in how the teams will line up in the semifinals with Broadfield set to capture maximum points in its match against winless West Melton while Lincoln should be too strong for Halswell. 

THE BEST LITTLE PRESCHOOL IN LINCOLN Melodies Preschool is a small boutique preschool of only 30 children per day nestled in the heart of Lincoln township that provides high quality care and education for boys and girls aged 2-5 years. Our Unique daily programme incorporates specialist music, dance, gym and art sessions using the Carl Orff approach and Gill Connell’s Moving Smart programme. The children enjoy discovering, creating and exploring our indoor environment which includes a spacious music room and art room. The natural outdoor environment is designed with your child’s creativity and physical development in mind. Static equipment is limited so that children are able to create their own huts, games, obstacle courses and always be physically challenged. Every day the

outdoor environment is different. Our low child to teacher ratio of 7 children to 1 teacher (Ministry Regulations are 10:1) provides a nurturing attentive atmosphere where children are engaged in meaningful play where there is always a teacher to care, support and extend on your child’s interest. It also allows teachers to provide amazing activities, lessons and interactions that would not otherwise happen in a higher child to teacher ratio environment. We also provide an exceptional Transition to School programme for 4-5 year old’s that is highly regarded by local New Entrant Teachers and Principals. Children at Melodies become happy creative, confident, innovative learners. Here are some facts about how children develop.

HOW CHILDREN LEARN AND DEVELOP 90% of a child’s brain develops in the first 5 years. Quality experiences and interactions help shape your child’s future during this time. Music develops a separate part of the brain that is linked to memory and awakens the senses and creativity. Children learn through movement and real sensory experiences. HIGH QUALITY PRESCHOOL EDUCATION IS THE SMALLEST MOST IMPORTANT INVESTMENT YOU COULD MAKE TO YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE.

Mr Devers, who has around 20 years’ experience in international business finance will be based at Westland Milk’s Rolleston office. Westland Milk CEO Toni Brendish said she was excited about the potential for Westland with an appointment of someone of Dorian’s calibre. “He has worked in the finance field for the Linde Group, formerly the BOC Group, since 1997. “He comes to us from his current role of financial director for Africa, United Kingdom and Ireland which involved leading all aspects of finance for this huge region covering more than 20 countries, more than 400,000 customers, and revenue of €1.5 billion. “Dorian also comes with New Zealand experience as he was head of finance for BOC New Zealand in 2003 and 2004.” Since taking over the role as Westland CEO in late 2016 Ms Brendish has overseen the appointment of a number of key roles in Westland’s management structure including the appointment of a new General Manager China (Gary Yu) and a new Chief Operations Officer (Craig Betty) on the senior management team. “Westland’s drive to

Dairy sector joins biosecurity fight The Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand has joined the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response (GIA) to combat the threat of pests and diseases that could significantly impact New Zealand’s dairy processing sector. The DCANZ represents 11 processing and exporting companies which account for around 98% of all the milk processed in New Zealand, and signed the agreement in a ceremony attended by Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy. By signing the GIA Deed, DCANZ joins 14 other primary industry sectors which have agreed to work with Government and each other, to combat biosecurity threats. DCANZ chair Malcolm Bailey said the signing is an important step to safeguarding the sector’s ability to continue meeting its global customer demand for safe, high-quality, New Zealand dairy products. “New Zealand’s status as being free from many of the pests and diseases which hinder livestock production and exports in other countries is a significant source of competitive advantage,” Mr Bailey said. “Dairy export earnings have averaged $14.4 billion in recent years. These trade benefits flow through the economy for the benefit of all New Zealanders. “We must do all we can to minimise the chances of a major, trade stopping,

biosecurity incursion, such as foot and mouth disease occurring.” Mr Bailey said the current Mycoplasma Bovis outbreak is a good reminder of the benefits of industry and Government working closely to manage biosecurity readiness and response “We have a shared interest in mitigating and eradicating threats.” GIA Secretariat manager Steve Rich said the signing by DCANZ further strengthens efforts to deliver better biosecurity outcomes. “GIA continues to go from strength to strength as more industry groups recognise the benefit of a joint approach

to managing biosecurity readiness and response activities,” Mr Rich said. “The arrival of DCANZ into GIA means New Zealand’s largest single export sector is now directly represented in the partnership and we look forward to working with them”. The dairy sector makes up over a third of New Zealand’s total exports, with existing markets in over 140 different countries. 

Farming

Caring for your livestock  by Dr Majorie Orr, www.lifestyleblock.co.nz

Aside from the commercial benefits which come from large scale farming having livestock can be both a benefit and a liability for the smaller run holder or lifestyle block property owner. One of the benefits is the fresh and economic supply of consumables such as eggs, milk and meat making the idea of owning stock very attractive. From this produce a variety of home staples can be made, such as cheese and yoghurt. Animals can also provide natural fibres, such as wool, alpaca fleece and mohair from goats which can be used in clothing and home furnishings. While owning animals has a lot of benefits there are some potential pitfalls that you need to be aware of. Firstly, you are legally responsible for the animals on your property and can be held liable for neglect or mistreatment. Owning livestock is a big time commitment and does restrict your activities, such as time spent away from home. It is important to have a reliable back up person organised who can look

after your animals when you can’t. Animals still need looking after even in the snow and rain, so buy some wet weather gear and be prepared to brave the elements. One cannot emphasis enough the benefits of good fencing for stock management and neighbourly relations. Keep your stock where they’re meant to be. You will also need to think of stock handling facilities for times when your animals need treatments, shearing and loading on a trailer. An area which has good shelter and housing also needs to be considered, as well as feed storage areas. Stock attracts vermin, so how will you take care of these? Animals don’t live forever so from time to time you will need to deal with sickness and death. You will need to build some knowledge about animal

health and be prepared to call in the vet if required. When deaths occur you need a plan for the disposal of the animal. Just like the birds and the bees animals do procreate. Ensure your animals breed only if you

want them to and that you are prepared for the birth of offspring. If you are well prepared and ready to put the work in then having stock can add a lot to your lifestyle property. A little planning goes a long way. 
