Lawn will be a part of the New Zealand team heading to the World Champs in Belgrade, Serbia in October. “I have been to three World Championships so far, in Russia, Serbia, and Australia,” Lawn says. “Our best result was being placed seventh at the 2011 World Champs in Australia. I competed in all these competitions as part of a team, and this year’s world champs are the first time I have been selected as an individual, which is a whole new challenge.” Lawn says competitive sports aerobics is a sport where all elements of physical fitness come into play. “We perform a two minute routine to music, in which we must include a range of different skill elements including press-ups, jumps, static strength moves, and show flexibility.

“There are no rests, it’s two minutes of non-stop high intensity exercise. We are judged on how well we complete each move, how energetically we perform the routine, how well the routine suits the music, and much more.” Lawn says she first came across aerobics when she was in Year 7 at school, when another Lincoln girl advertised in the school notices that she was looking for people to coach. “A friend and I decided it sounded hilarious, and dared each other to go. An hour later we had been picked for a team. “I competed at school level for two years and was then picked to be in a fitness team with six other girls from around Canterbury. We qualified for Worlds and I have had the desire to represent New Zealand ever since.” continued on page 7 …

Young people in Selwyn will have the opportunity to attend a two day Youth Event which will include a ‘have a go’ day with a carnival and market, a battle of the bands, a concert featuring local talent and a youth forum. Selwyn District Council is one of 29 councils throughout New Zealand which have benefitted from an $889,000 Youth Development Partnership Fund announced by the Government. The Selwyn Foundation Youth Council, which is facilitated by the Selwyn District Council Youth Advisor, has received $32,000 in funding from the Ministry of Youth Development to stage the Youth Event in 2014. The Foundation Youth Council submitted an event plan to the Ministry which included holding a Youth Forum to discuss ideas and develop action plans and a Battle of the Bands event on the first day of the weekend event.
The second day will feature ‘have a go’ activities showcasing lots of different sport and recreation activities young people can try and clubs they can join in Selwyn. The day will end with a concert where local young people can show off their talents and invited artists will also perform. “This is an exciting opportunity to stage an event which young people from across Selwyn will enjoy,” SDC’s Youth Advisor Chris Martin says. “The event will build on the work of our Youth Action Groups and shows the enthusiasm our Foundation Youth Council brings to Selwyn.” The event will be open to young people from across

There are also a number of new members. “The group is only getting stronger,” says Guy. “We currently have around 25 volunteers. We will still be around in another 30 years.” The support group is planning an afternoon event later in the year to celebrate their 30 years. The Malvern Cancer Support Group is celebrating 30 years of helping those in the community who have received a diagnosis of cancer. “It’s a huge milestone,” says support group president Elaine Guy. While the day to day work of the group has changed since its beginning in the 80s, the group remains a vital support for those affected by cancer. “We provide information, financial help, and drive people to hospital for treatment,” says Guy. “In the last twelve months we’ve done 62 drives from Darfield to Christchurch Hospital Oncology.” The group also helps fundraise and is busy preparing for the annual Daffodil Day being held this Friday, August 30. “We will

Things I have learned
Selwyn needs to stand on its own

Having nearly completed two terms on council there are some things I have learned. The first one is that nobody particularly likes the council. I guess this is to be expected given the compulsion of paying rates but it does require a thick skin at times. I have also learned that the most valuable council asset is the staff. There is a reason why people choose to work in local government rather than the private sector and that is a genuine passion and a desire to do the very best for ratepayers. Whether they are working alongside communities to assist them with their projects or providing the necessities of water, waste water, refuse collection or roading or perhaps it is providing planning guidance to ensure that tomorrow’s communities are provisioned with what they will require in the future. Maybe they are involved with finance, ensuring that
future needs are adequately funded, sometimes by debt to allow those that have yet to arrive to pay their fair share of the infrastructure cost that is incurred today. Regardless of their role, I know that that as a councillor, we are required to make decisions and our confidence to do this is enhanced by the quality of information that is supplied to us by our conscientious staff. I have learned that grandchildren are one of life’s great motivators, for us to look forward to the world they will inherit and understand that decisions made today will impact on them and their family’s enjoyment of the Selwyn district in the future. I have also learned that if you can’t have a bit of fun along the way, it’s time to move on to something else. ¢

Concern is being expressed about the future shape of local government in Canterbury. To my mind there can be no doubt that an independent district council in Selwyn can and does provide a much better place to live, work and play than would our subservience under a greater Christchurch or Canterbury conglomerate. This is not to say that we cannot gain from a closer relationship with the big city and the region, and that is being facilitated as I write. The partial restructuring of the finance side of the Canterbury health system, for example, ensures that we become part of a much bigger health pie and will therefore be able to more fully utilise scarce government health monies in our more sparsely populated district. Road crashes in Selwyn have recently trended upwards alarmingly, as more people come to live in our district and our once-rural roads become busier. To help arrest that trend we have become part of a national and international initiative which emphasises the necessity of a ‘whole of system’ approach. The Safer Journeys system encourages all agencies involved in road safety to spread crash prevention across all causal factors including safer road use, safer speeds, safer roads and roadsides as well as safer vehicles. Also, the jury is still out on whether the economic gain from land-use intensification in Selwyn is worth the environmental risks. Certainly E-coli encroachments and nitrate levels are rising. Much work is being done to halt the increase in both surface and ground-water pollution but while land-use intensification is being encouraged ahead of total pollution control the results of such effort remain uncertain. ¢

Selwyn District Council’s tourism advisor Elizabeth Pitcorn was able to speak directly to more than 100 travel agents at a travel expo in Perth about Selwyn. Selwyn District Council was lucky enough to win the free trip to Perth from Air New Zealand at a launch event for the new air service. This allowed Pitcorn to travel to Perth as part of a South Island delegation which attended a travel expo in the city to promote Canterbury to travel agents and travel wholesalers in Western Australia. “There was a lot of interest from the travel agents in Bed and Breakfast accommodation in our district, our gardens, the TranzAlpine route and walking tracks,” Pitcorn says. “Many agents also wanted to find out more about the skiing options available in Selwyn.”
Pitcorn says the expo was a great opportunity to market Selwyn and its attractions to a new audience and that she is confident that many people from Western Australia will chose to visit Selwyn as a result of the trip. Travel agents and travel wholesalers at the expo were given brochures promoting Selwyn’s attractions to take away and share with their customers. From December 4 a new direct flight will be launched from Perth to Christchurch and will operate twice a week. The service will run until April 26, 2014, as a trial and if successful will become permanent. Western Australia has an estimated population of 2.47 million. It is the fastest growing State in Australia and weekly income levels are also higher than the Australian average. ¢
Vaccinations were provided at the preschool last Friday with 68 adults and 58 children being vaccinated. Dr Ramon Pink, Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, says the vaccination was provided after a child from the preschool was diagnosed with hepatitis A. Both of the child’s parents have also been diagnosed with hepatitis A. There is no known connection between these three cases and the current outbreak of hepatitis A in Ashburton. In Ashburton there have been 22 confirmed cases over the past three months. “Hepatitis A is transmitted when people don’t wash their hands properly after going to the toilet, and good hand hygiene, particularly thorough hand washing, is key in preventing its spread,” Dr Pink says. “Preschools can be a high risk environment for the spread of hepatitis A, particularly where there is nappy changing.” Dr Pink says that he was very pleased with Friday’s turnout, and has thanked the preschool and the
parents involved for fully supporting the vaccination programme. Hepatitis A, formerly known as infectious hepatitis, is an acute infectious disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus. Young children infected with hepatitis A typically have a milder form of the disease, usually lasting from one to three weeks, whereas adults tend to experience a more severe form. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, nausea, appetite loss, jaundice and colour change to urine and faeces. ¢

Ms Adams recently took her own television for recycling at the RCN e-waste recycling plant at Buchanans Road in Hornby and handed over her five dollar note, the subsidised cost of recycling, to RCN’s general manager, John Thornhill. Ms Adams says she is thrilled with the progress of the scheme to date, including in Selwyn, where the target of 2,700 televisions recycled had been reached. “It is great news for the environment that people are really getting behind the scheme,” Ms Adams says. “Old television sets and other electronic waste such as computer monitors cannot be put into landfills
because they contain chemicals that can contaminate the environment and cause harm to humans.” The government’s TV TakeBack programme has been rolled out around the country to coincide with the digital switchover in each region. Through the government subsidy, the cost to the public of recycling a television has been no more than $5. The programme is also aimed at expanding electronic recycling services across New Zealand, raising public awareness and ensuring recyclers have the capacity and capability to deal with increased volumes of e-waste in the future. ¢

Lawn also coaches aerobics and has coached multiple national champions from primary level to post school. “My next goal with coaching is to coach an athlete through to Worlds, so they can experience the amazing experience that comes with representing your country.” There are two international federations of aerobics (FIG and FISAF) but only one (FIG) gets funding in New Zealand. “Unfortunately it’s the one I am not part of,” Lawn says. “This means fundraising is a huge part of any competition I attend. In the past, athletes have had to decline the selection for Worlds, as they couldn’t raise the funds, which is terribly disappointing. “I have been lucky enough this year to gain sponsorship from the Lincoln University Recreation Centre, who have been a fantastic help in allowing me to

dogwoods, sometimes need a helping hand to bring out their best. Removing the lower branches of a shrub such as a camellia can lighten the appearance of the plant. It can also open up a space underneath giving you a new area for shade-loving plants, although don’t be tempted to make every tree a lollipop shape.
Open up the canopy of a larger shrub or tree by removing the less attractive branches. Make the cuts at different heights for a more natural effect. Winter is the best time for pruning but sometimes with deciduous trees it’s necessary in summer as the branches, weighted with leaves, handle differently. Opening up branch structure allows in light and air which discourages diseases. Trim shrubs which flowered in late winter before new growth gets underway, cutting back to strong buds all shoots that have flowered. You may have left your hydrangeas untouched so that last year’s flowers
give a little protection against frost. Spring pruning of these plants is always more enjoyable as there are plenty of fat, swelling buds just below the flowers to cut to. The old mophead and quercifolia types flower from old wood, so leave any healthy stems which didn’t flower last year. Paniculata and arborescens types flower on new wood, so if you want you can prune back the whole bush to a basic framework. Not every shrub should be interfered with. Good garden design relies on a proportion of weightier specimens too. Enjoy your spring garden! ¢

Minerals are essential Minerals are inorganic, naturally occurring compounds. There are over 70 minerals we obtain through foods of which about 20 are identified as essential for our bodies to function. If we have inadequate mineral intake, or our mineral intake is out of balance, this can have disastrous effects on our health. While food from the sea has excellent mineral balance, many of our soils are deficient in minerals. NZ soils contain very low levels of the cell protecting trace mineral selenium. This is especially important for those in the South Island as the bread produced from Canterbury grain has low selenium. The NZ Government agency MedSafe (2103) commented “South Island bread is made predominantly with wheat grown locally in low-selenium soils.” Some minerals have multiple functions and low levels can cause many problems. For example zinc is known to participate in over 300 enzymes. Low zinc levels can cause diverse problems from poor immune function, eye problems, hair loss and skin problems. Many people take mineral supplements to maintain health or as part of a treatment programme for specific conditions. These can be single minerals, such as iron, iodine or calcium, small groups such as magnesium, calcium and potassium or as multi-mineral complexes. My view is the single or small groups of minerals should only be given under professional guidance. For example single iron supplements should only be taken after blood tests show low iron levels. The same applies to iodine and some other minerals. For most people, most of the time the best way to get minerals from supplements is as modest dose multi-mineral preparations. This will ensure you are getting the minerals in the correct form and correct balance. My preference is for chelated minerals whereby the mineral is bonded to amino acids (the building blocks of protein) to provide optimum absorption with the minimum risk of tummy upsets. Environment Canterbury is giving Selwyn residents an opportunity to learn about Canterbury’s unique braided rivers and their inhabitants, particularly birdlife. Braided River Aid (BRaid), a non-profit organisation which aims to preserve the indigenous features of Canterbury’s braided rivers, runs courses supported by ECan. The course, held at the Glentui Conference Centre near Oxford, has been offered successfully for the last two years. The next, led by professional ornithologist John Dowding, will happen from September 24–26. BRaid chairman Nick Ledgard says Cantabrians are particularly lucky. “It would be hard to find somewhere else in New Zealand where such a range of native land birds remain in their original habitat so close to major urban areas.” ECan’s Biodiversity Team Leader Jo Abbott says their support of the courses is worthwhile because braided rivers and their inhabitants are an integral part of Canterbury’s landscape and extremely important.

The exhibition opens on Friday, August 30, at 5.30pm. During the second half of the month, the Malvern Community Arts Council, with the support of Creative New Zealand Creative Communities Scheme, is holding workshops for young people at the Selwyn Gallery. This is an opportunity for young artists aged 5–12 years to learn about fabric painting with the theme of Maori myths and legends. The two hour workshops will be run by local artist and primary school teacher Vicky Peacock. Each workshop runs from 2–4pm and you can book for either Saturday 14 or Sunday 15 September. Vehicle servicing can covers a wide range of tasks — Kirwee Challenge covers these in three segment — minor service, major service and a computer engine management system and health check. These are usually carried out at 10,000–15,000 kilometres intervals, or from every six month to 12 months depending on your travel movements. With engine management systems in modern vehicles we offer a computer health check. This resets computer faults that build up between service intervals and need to be cleared using our up to date scan tool, to help vehicles maintain their optimum performance and run economically, saving fuel. New vehicles have the capabilities to show the driver the litres of fuel per 100km the vehicle is achieving and without a health check it is hard to maintain these manufacturers specifications. This would take technician up to ½ hour to perform. In a minor service, expect to get the engine oil and oil filter changed,
all other oils and fluids checked for condition and levels. Lubrication will be carried out and the battery condition checked. We use testing equipment to tell us when brake fluids need changing and if engine coolant will meet corrosion and or freezing capabilities. We check tyre condition and pressure including spare wheel and all lights and wipers. All under vehicle inspections will be carried out on suspension, brakes, steering, and drive train. Any attention required will be first discussed with the customer. This minor service would take up to an hour to complete. A major service includes all minor service items plus changes of all fluids and fuel filters, spark plugs etc. Most manufacturers supply service books with their vehicles — that give service
intervals and what is expected to be serviced at these intervals but we can supply free MTA service books for those that are missing or lost. These books should be filled out by service technician, with mileage and date recorded, a requirement by insurance and vehicle manufacturers when warranty work is to be carried out. No records of service can impact on warranties. Servicing regularly is one way of making sure your vehicle will be reliable and safe and money well spent With 45 years of experience we can provide for all motoring needs.
