Curling on Mount Olympus  by Ann van Engelen

‘Tarnspeil’ saw more than 100 people playing and encouraging curlers at the event held on the mountain Tarn at the top of the Mt Olympus ski field, 1,800metres above sea level on Saturday.

“This is a unique event, which really shows our club spirit,” said Hororata Club captain Phil Freeman. “The curling started in 2011 when we received funding as part of the Rugby World Cup promotion to showcase true kiwi events. Since then we have tried to run a curling day annually, but weather and ice conditions have not always been favourable. “This year we had a bluebird day, and more than 100 people enjoyed watching eight teams compete in Tarnspeil, curling their way through a round-robin,

which led to a highly entertaining semifinal and cliff hanger of a final.” The final saw a Windwhistle Winter Sports Club team take on a team of misfits from Methven. “The final was tight with a high standard of curling seeing the crowd on their feet. With just one curl remaining, the WWSC Club team had to swing around the guard stone and tap the rearward sitting competitor’s stone out of the circle to take the much-deserved victory. However, in a cruel twist of fate, the stone gained a small wobble

en route to its target. Having likely, encountered some rougher ice near the edge of the sheet. The stone swivelled this way and that, as the crowd held its collective breath. “Luck swung the way of the visitors, and the stone missed its target by the narrowest of margins leaving the Methven misfits to take the spoils of victory. Whether you are curling or spectating, this is a great social event, and we enjoy welcoming club members and visitors to our field, as curling embodies who we are as a club.” 

Keeping Selwyn Beautiful Keep New Zealand Beautiful has announced plans to open a local branch in Selwyn. A meeting will be held at 7pm on August 29 at the West Melton Community and Recreation Centre. Community members are invited to attend and learn more about the work the group undertakes. Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) is a not-for-profit charitable organisation that has been leading the way in educating New Zealanders on how to ‘Do the Right Thing’ since 1967. KNZB carries out its work through local, grass-roots led, communitybased KNZB organisations called branches. A KNZB local branch is a group of community members who are passionate about keeping New Zealand clean and green for the next generation of Tidy Kiwis and are ready to take the next step to lead the charge in their community to help fulfil KNZB’s mission. Branches are community-run, community-led organisations that partner with KNZB in their area to perform three main functions: service, education and advocacy. Keep New Zealand Beautiful plans to further develop its connection with Selwyn District Council, which will enable

it to enhance local branch capability through this engagement process. District councillor Craig Watson said Selwyn has people who care deeply about the next generation and our amazing district. “Keep New Zealand Beautiful provides us with a new and exciting avenue to get involved in making Selwyn even more great. The commitment is only what you can put in, but the rewards are immeasurable for you, for your family and for your community.” 

Club member Anne Finch said the club was seeking expressions of interest from businesses who may be interested in having a stall at the event. “We currently have a number already very interested, including saffron, nuts, truffles, garden sculptures, etc, but would like to hear from anyone else out there who we may not be aware of,” she said. The expo will be held on Sunday, December 1 at the West Melton Community Centre. Anne Finch said the aim of the expo is to showcase what she describes as a wonderful and widespread variety of interesting businesses and producers we have

in Selwyn and neighbouring regions. “We are well aware that Canterbury area has many passionate gardeners who enjoy sharing their skills and also gaining more knowledge. We will have demonstrations, guest speakers and plant sales, along with sales of products from stallholders. Abreast of Life Dragon Boat team member Meri Gibson captained the NZ Black Dragons Senior B Women’s Small Boat squad who competed in the 14th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Thailand. Team member Janice and Rolleston residents ‘Gilly’ and Ben, were also representing New Zealand competing against 30 other countries. “Half of our team of 14 are breast cancer survivors, and we placed fifth overall in the competition and fourth in the two-kilometre. This was a highlight for our team, as were our fifth placings in other distances,” said Meri. “We arrived in Bangkok late on Friday, August 16 and travelled for two hours to Pattaya to participate in the festival. Our first training run out on the water was Sunday, with further training on Monday and Tuesday. “The first day of competing was Wednesday, which was the two-kilometre race. It was exciting with so many boats out there. In that race, the Singapore A team crashed into the USA boat and tipped them over. We managed to avoid the carnage as it occurred right around us with the tip of the Singapore boat’s tail just nicking the front of our boat. We paddled onto a very reputable fourth-place.“ The team then had two days of rest before racing in the 200m event. “There were more than 135 races that day, which were back to back, four

minutes apart. Sunday was our last day of racing with the 500m event. “The New Zealand Black Dragons Senior A Women’s Small Boat crew did exceptionally well, they picked up a gold medal in the 2K, a silver medal in the 200m and another silver in the 500m races, which is absolutely fantastic. The Senior B Open Small Boat took out a bronze medal in their last race. Ben was a paddler in the Senior A Open team, and they won a bronze medal in the 500m Senior Open Small Boat final. “I knew it would be a tough competition as our team trained in two both the North and South Island during winter prior to coming. This meant it was always going to be an uphill battle. “The exposure is great for the sport in New Zealand and will encourage other paddlers to give it a go. On our return, we start training for the upcoming season and prepare for our festival for 2022. This has been an incredible adventure for us as we see where we sit on the world stage. I am pleased to say that we have done ourselves, our team, and our country proud.” The New Zealand team results are Senior A Small Boat Womens — gold

Entire school Business offered involved in planting promotion opportunity  by Mike Isle

Selwyn businesses are being offered the opportunity to promote their business in the refreshed Selwyn Directory. The council has unveiled an updated Selwyn Directory — a searchable online directory of businesses in the district. The directory is now open for businesses to register or update their details. The directory offers businesses the chance to advertise their details including a map location, contacts, website and social media links and a summary of their business. “The directory is part of council’s work to support local businesses and encourage people to know what is local and to think local first when looking for goods and services,” Community Services and Facilities

group manager Denise Kidd said. As well as providing a free opportunity to promote businesses in the district to customers the directory will help business to business links, she said. “The directory is a great tool for finding local resources to assist your business. “As a smaller district, we know businesses are strengthened by looking at where they can complement each other and by working together, and the directory’s a good way to connect.” To make a listing, businesses can visit selwyn.govt.nz/directory-register.

It took all the staff and students of Burnham School, parents, a district councillor, a clutch of environmental experts and even the commander of the local military camp, but collectively they did it.

The occasion was the Enviroschools plant-out event at Pope Field last Monday. The school’s event coordinator Nicky Spence said it was a fantastic day for everybody involved. “We spent the entire day planting native trees, learning to weave flax, identifying insects and medicinal plants and learning about conservation. “It was also a great way for our school to give something back to the community,” she said. Also on hand and helping was Selwyn District councillor and chair of its district plan biodiversity group Murray Lemon. Councillor Lemon said that it a great day out spent with “a fantastic group of enthusiastic kids.”

He said he spent the morning helping plant trees and harvest medicinal plants. “In all respects, it was highly successful, and with more than 150 students, the organisers should be congratulated on meeting the logistical challenges of such a big event,” he said. Burnham’s strong links with Burnham Military Camp were reinforced with a contingent of military police and the camp’s commanding officer Major Grant Payton on hand to provide support and to assist with road safety. Nicky Spence said she and the school would like to thank everybody involved and especially New Zealand Defence Force land management officer Shona Sam who helped coordinate the event. 

Tryphena and Melissa Jebson from Darfield managed the team with this years squad consisting of Courtney Mullen from Ellesmere/Leeston, Maia Waretini and Ashleigh Tawhara from Christchurch, and Laura Macnab from Waikato. “It was a very close competition with the horses and ponies supplied, so it

There are four competitions — judging, in-hand class, dressage and riding. “There was a tour organised with the Australian team visiting studs, dressage yards and historical places involving horses. We are thankful for all of our many sponsors and supporters who helped us in various ways to get to the event. Remembering those who fought

Community working together

 by Ann van Engelen

The Pioneers of Canterbury marching teams are training for the upcoming competitions that begin in October and run until March.

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand and Canterbury Brevet Club are remembering those who served in the skies over England during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

 A group of RAF fighter pilots resting in front of one of their Hurricane aircraft during the Battle of Britain photo credit Air Force Museum of New Zealand

“Serving with the Royal Air Force as pilots or air gunners, 133 New Zealanders took part in the Battle of Britain,” says communications manager at the Air Force Museum, Michelle Sim. “Twenty New Zealanders were among the 544 who lost their lives in the desperate battle fought in the skies over England, as the RAF sought to defend Great Britain from invasion by Nazi Germany.” With only 650 serviceable fighter aircraft and 1,103 trained fighter pilots at the outset, the RAF were vastly outnumbered against the German Air Force. That led British prime minister Winston Churchill to famously refer to them as ‘The Few’. “One Kiwi, Air Vice-Marshal Sir Keith Park, played a critical role during the battle, as the commander of No 11 Group of the RAF’s Fighter Command, which was at the forefront of the battle, tasked with the defence of south-east

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

England. He is now widely regarded as being instrumental in the British victory and is often referred to as the ‘Defender of London’. “While it may be slipping out of living memory, the Battle of Britain remains a hugely significant historical event. As the first major military campaign fought entirely in the air, it is also a fitting opportunity to honour all who have served and continue to serve, in our air force. “On September 15, their sacrifice will be remembered in a commemorative service with an address given by Deputy Chief of the Air Force, Air Commodore Carol Abraham. “The event will be at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand Atrium in Wigram on September 15 2019, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. If you have any special mobility requirements, please contact us so we can make sure you are accommodated on the day.” 

“We were privileged to get sponsorship from Stems From Home home-based childcare for our Open teams’ uniform jackets. This is our four to seven-year-olds,” says coach Kylie Dowers. “This was so helpful to keep the family costs down for the children to be able to join in. It is encouraging to see the community pull together as we work toward success as a local club as it means a little less fundraising. Having the jackets not only do keep the children warm but if they spill something it is easier to clean than their marching uniform. “The under sixteen-year-old teams have been participating in weekend training camps, and these have been a chance for everyone to learn through dedicated sessions with no interruptions. “Marching is an exciting, non-contact sport, and it helps with coordination

and brain development. We are looking forward to the season ahead, and our goal is simply to improve on last year’s achievements. “We are based at Templeton Community Hall and have people from all over the Selwyn district and beyond attend. “We welcome new members — you don’t need to have been a marcher for years, anyone can pick up the sport. Our teams are from four-year-olds in the Open up to Masters’ teams, which is 30 years old and over. “Our Open and Intro teams, which are our juniors, are presenting the half-time entertainment at the Leisure Marching event at the Bishopdale YMCA on September 21. This will be a great experience for them, and they are very excited.” For more information go to the Pioneers of Canterbury Marching Team Facebook page. 

There’s a terrible, slanderous (and absolutely true) rumour that men tackle the existential angst of mid-life by taking refuge in powerful toys. If it wasn’t scientifically proven that the best cure for the 40-something blues is 300 frisky ponies or more wrapped up under the hood of something impractical, it would be quite a sexist thing to talk about. Here’s another scientific fact. The wind in your hair caused by driving a powerful convertible with the top down can slow or even reverse male pattern baldness. All right, that may be a little bit made up. However, it is true that one of the leading sectors of retail when it comes to gifts for dad is in the automotive realm. From pieces of old cars made into furniture to automobilia and retro-chic for the man cave wall, through to the tools blokes use to tinker with their pride and joy, Father’s Day gifts have a strong whiff of high octane petrol. When it means that dads are generous, selfless types indeed. Think about it. While kids get toys to enjoy at Christmas, and Mother’s Day would not be the same without champagne and chocolates just for her, all dad wants (for those rare 24 hours out of 8,760 when it’s all about him) is to keep the car going. So he can be a combo of Uber driver, delivery service and (when he’s alone in the car) Senna crossed with Brock and

Fangio. Give dad a set of spark plugs and an oil filter on his special day, and he’ll be all smiles. Give mum a vacuum cleaner, and they might end up removing it in the emergency room, very carefully, which leads to a final thought. With dads being such saintly sorts, focussed on providing transport for all on their one day a year, doesn’t it make sense that they should get a new car for the family to enjoy? Something designed by Italians, powered by Germans and named after a dangerous animal, perhaps? No? Well, it was worth a try. 

THE RECORD

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE In the pipeline  by Andy Bryenton

Winter is barely over, but summer is already on the minds of many homeowners, who are not looking forward to the humidity and heat a Kiwi holiday season can bring. Then there are those who cannot accommodate a wood or coal-burning fire, but find that a multi-unit heat pump system will be bulky, unsightly or just plain expensive. Spring is a great time to tackle the issue of air conditioning, as it comes at a time when the industry is in between the ‘peaks’ caused by reactionary or ‘last-minute’ customers. Ask any AC tech, and they will tell you — folks wait until they are too hot or too cold to call in the pros. The right time to act is now, as you will beat the rush and likely be able to get faster service or even a sharper price.

The buzz this season is all about a solution that combines aesthetics with technology. Ducted heat pumps can be tucked away in the roof, where many Kiwi homes have already got space for ventilation units and extractor fans. Advances in the efficiency of heat pump tech mean that a compact ‘core’, well insulated and centrally located, can pump warm or cool air into the home, at the touch of a button.

Industrial Fencing Residential Gates Structural Steel Design, Fabricate, Install

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

 Ducted air conditioning used to be the preserve of offices and hospitals now it’s been made more compact and less expensive for the modern home

There are no big wall-mounted consoles, either, just tiny disc-shaped vents in the ceiling. A second advantage is the opportunity to boost efficiency with a second heat exchanger. While the main heat exchanger in a system like this lives outside, just as in a conventional single-room heat pump, the second one works to provide pure air from outdoors, but to warm it with outgoing stale air at indoor temperature. With this unit in the system, the benefits of pure air come without the temperature drop of opening a window!

Your home may be suitable for ducted heat pump air conditioning if it has a generous roof space to run the insulated ducts, and if it’s of a compact ‘footprint’. It’s important for the layout to contain as many simple direct lines as possible from the central ‘core’ to the outlets in bedrooms and living area. For the best summer cooling, an air input grate should be placed on the shady side of the house. The benefits, a clean, uncluttered look, more wall space for windows or artwork, and heat or cool in every room via your phone or a remote. 

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE The third great utility You wouldn’t build a new home without consulting with a plumber, or rely on running hosepipes through your rooms to connect the sink and toilet. You’d never think about leaving out electricity or nailing high-voltage cables to the baseboards in every room. So why plan a new build, with the luxury of absolute design freedom, and forget about the third big utility — data? These days, nearly every area of the home relies on the internet. From smart TVs that bring us the latest entertainment (and will soon deliver crisp, 4K footage of classic World Cup Rugby action), through to fridges, which can reorder vital supplies, appliances and the ‘internet of things’ are fast catching up with the more conventional bandwidth users like PCs, gaming consoles and laptops. The average Kiwi family now owns a whopping ten net-capable devices. That’s one phone each, two computers, two tablets, a smart television and a console. That’s just for starters. When designing a new build, or pulling the walls down for a renovation, think about reticulating cable and adding more hardpoints to connect to the web. There’s also the option to plan the positioning of routers and signal boosters for sprawling homes with big footprints. Too often the router, gateway

to all the knowledge in the world, is relegated to a wonky shelf snarled in wire, or a corner where it can get knocked over by the dog. For the farm, or lifestyle blocks with sleepouts and second flats, a wireless link can be a godsend. Then there’s the ability to lock down security with cameras connected to cloud-based storage, or to monitoring systems that can alert your phone to any intrusions. Lines of sight and perfect placement are easy to establish with an architect and builder, rather than as an afterthought. Finally, there’s no need to despair if your new build is planned for the countryside. Wireless broadband has advanced to the point where old copper wires are left in its dust. Get connected during the build process by talking to your local internet service provider, who should be able to advise on the best way to future-proof your home for the tech advances of the 2020s! 

Porsche’s enduring designs  by Andy Bryenton

With a new 911 breaking cover recently, Porsche fans will once again face mild-mannered jibes from their mates about the unchanging symmetry and curves of the rear-engined sports classic. The fact is, Ferdinand Porsche, father of the 911, seemed to have a knack for developing enduring auto imagery.

 Porsche designed the SSK for Mercedes — subsequently, the styling inspired Clenet, Zimmer, Excalibur and even a Nissan

Perhaps the most bizarre case of this ‘Porsche effect’, in which one of Ferdinand’s designs has come down through the years, is found in a family tree of auto oddballs. It starts with the super-prestigious Mercedes SSK, designed when Porsche was still working for Benz. It was a race winner and head turner, beloved (unfortunately) by the dictators on the Axis side during the second world war. All owned the staffcar derivative, the W150, which was literally bulletproof. That should have been it for a car, which shone briefly in the pre-war auto scene but was tarnished by association with the Third Reich’s leadership. Not so, however. Despite this ultimate in bad

public relations, the design of the SSK proved seductive enough that a small company in America began building ‘updated’ replicas in 1964. The Excalibur evoked continental, old-school class, packed a 300hp Corvette V8 and stayed in production until 1990. Long enough to spawn three copycats to the copy of Porsche’s design, and for Arnold Schwarzenegger to buy one. The first, the Zimmer Golden Spirit, was created to be a ‘retro luxury’ auto and based on the Ford Mustang chassis. A variant of this car is still in production today, with its biggest sales centres in the USA and the oil-rich states of the Middle East. The second was the short-

lived but powerful Clenet Coachworks Series 1, as seen on both Dallas and Dynasty. Ronald Reagan called it the car of the century, perhaps not knowing which previous leader’s vehicle it was based on. The third is the bizarre Mitsuoka Le Seyde, a Japanese iteration of the American version of the German original, powered by a Nissan Silvia’s RB20 engine. Looking at these interesting and anachronistic autos makes the evergreen and simple design of the 911 appear refreshingly modest. It also illustrates that great auto design, like great art, can be timeless. Though the original may still be better than a reprint, in both cases. 
