Darfield and Southbridge to contest final The pride of Malvern will face the elite of Ellesmere in this year’s division …

Blair will join twin brother Scott in the Darfield 200 club with Scott reaching the milestone three weeks ago. He said while the final will be a special match for him he is more focussed on getting his hands on the Coleman Shield for the first time in the club’s history. “This is an important match for the team and the club, and it would be great to have the shield upstairs in the clubrooms for the first time. “We are the underdogs having lost to Southbridge a couple of weeks ago but it would be awesome to win this one and I can tell you if we win we’ll be partying for a week.” He said it

was going to be ‘pretty cool’ to suit up alongside his twin brother in the final. Blair, a qualified builder who runs his own company constructing building foundations, is pleased at the way the team has performed this season for the club. “It’s been a great club to be a part of with some great people for sure.” He is also looking forward to playing for Buller again in the upcoming Heartland Championship. “It’s the sixth year I will be playing for Buller and I have played over 50 games for them including last year’s Meads Cup final against Wanganui which we lost

narrowly.” He paid tribute to the support of his wife Kelly for allowing him to play for Buller and looking after their son Jack who turns two this month. “We all go over as a family and stay with friends in Westport,” Blair said. “They really look after you over there and the Heartland Championship is a great competition to play in.” He rates Darfield’s win in the Combined Country rugby competition in 2005 as the highlight of his career so far with the club. However, come Sunday morning he may well have another highlight to add to his Darfield rugby CV. ¢

This year, AMP is giving away up to $200,000 to help talented New Zealanders of all ages pursue their dreams through the scholarships. AMP regional business advisor Greg Stanley said whether the dream is a new business, launching a communityfocussed project, providing educational opportunities, or representing New Zealand at the Olympics, a scholarship will help. Last year, Canterbury teenager Angus McWilliam was awarded $5,000 to pursue his basketball dreams of joining New Zealand team the Tall Blacks and ultimately, the NBA. Angus has just returned from Cairo, Egypt, where he competed in the FIBA U19 World Championships, with the New Zealand Junior Tall Blacks. “Not only did the money help me gain overseas playing experience but it enabled me to secure the pathway to my future in basketball with Texas Christian University,” Angus said. Also, this year, eight Adviser Businesses in the AMP Financial Adviser Network will each offer a $5,000

Commuter delays Selwyn commuters are being warned to expect lengthy delays with changes being made to the Russley Road and Memorial Avenue airport intersection this weekend.

p An artist’s impression of what the Memorial Ave and Russley Rd Gateway Bridge intersection will look like once finished

The team working on the $112 million Russley Road upgrade are removing the large, temporar y roundabout and replacing it with a new signalised intersection. NZ Transport Agency transport system manager Pete Connors said the permanent change means traffic will be able to travel to and from Christchurch International Airport under the new Gateway Bridge for the first time. “There will be lengthy delays of up to 20 minutes at the Russley Road/ Memorial Avenue airport intersection as part of the Western Corridor project

reaches a key milestone. “Drivers can avoid delays by taking the suggested detour routes.” Mr Connors said the change will allow the project team to complete the new road on top of the bridge as they work to complete the overall project. The Russley Road upgrade is one of the six sections of the $350 million Western Corridor upgrade from Belfast to Hornby to a fourlane, median-separated highway. Three of the six sections are finished, with the remaining three underway. “It is on track to be completed by early 2018, months ahead of schedule.” ¢

Almost all the boil water notices put in place after the recent flooding around Selwyn have been lifted.

Selwyn schools and environmental groups are being reminded to get their entries in for Lincoln Envirotown Trust’s annual environmental video competition.

The Selwyn District Council issued precautionary boil water notices for the Acheron, Hororata, Malvern Hills, Springfield and Upper Selwyn Huts supplies last week for turbidity due to heavy rainfall. When a water supply shows high turbidity, water treatment methods cannot be guaranteed to be effective. The boil water notices have been lifted for all areas except for Springfield and council is advising residents on the Springfield supply to continue to boil their water. A council spokesperson said water supply turbidity levels have now lowered which means the treatment systems can operate effectively. “Water samples have been taken showing the water supply is clear of E.coli and the water is safe to drink

without boiling.” Meanwhile, to help clear Lake Ellesmere from sediment build up and to reduce the lake level following the heavy rainfall the lake has been opened to the sea by Environment Canterbury (ECan). Lake Ellesmere is the largest lake in Canterbury and has no natural outlet to the sea. ECan’s river engineering manager Leigh Griffiths said they are conscious the community is keen to see the lake opened to help water drain away and this is happening as early as physically possible. “Once the lake is opened, there is limited ability to control how long it stays that way. The length is determined by weather and sea conditions and how quickly gravel is deposited by the sea to close the cut.” ¢

p The Weedons School team, pictured with then Mayor Kelvin Coe, receives the Kea Trophy for being the supreme winner in the 2016 LET environmental video competition with their video entitled ‘Rubbish Rap’

Schools and groups are being asked by Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET) to produce a short video, up to five minutes in length, that carries an environmental message and if possible suggest action on the subject. LET project manager Dave Fitzjohn said Selwyn schools have in the past been enthusiastic in their support of the event with last year’s competition winner being Weedons School which received the Kea Trophy. “We are aware of the excellent work schools

are doing in regard to making their students aware of environmental and sustainability issues. Mr Fitzjohn said the competition isn’t just open to schools. “People can be as creative as they like, using any combination of animation, video or slides to carry their environmental message.” The deadline for entries is August 25, and for more information go to www.videocompetition.eventbrite.co.nz or call Dave Fitzjohn 03 423 0445. ¢

Supreme winner on display Motor Fest secures naming sponsor u by Kent Caddick

Works by Darfield Artweek’s supreme award winner Sarah Dodson will be featured in the latest exhibition at the Selwyn gallery. Her work along with that of Bianca Scrimgeour and Charles Hannah are on display at the gallery in Darfield in an exhibition entitled ‘Hoof, Paw, and Claw’. Malvern Community Arts Council administrator Rose Gerard said people are drawn to images of animals because of the emotional responses they create. “The Selwyn Gallery’s newest exhibition capitalises on this fact with a wonderful mix of animals portrayed in watercolours and oil paintings. “Their intricate details suggest character and evoke emotion in the viewer, making this an exhibition not to be missed.” Sarah Dodson, who is in her fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Canterbury University, was awarded the prestigious Malvern Community Arts Council Premier Award at Darfield Artweek 2016. “Oil paint is Sarah’s preferred medium, and the works in this exhibition focus on animals,” Ms Gerard said. Despite the atrocious weather that has battered the district over 300 audience members and 100 performers filled the Lincoln High School Hall recently for a concert highlighting local talent. The ‘Celebration of Screen and Stage Concert’ featured music performed by a wide variety of Selwyn based entertainers. Concert organisers June and Ian Burney said the aim of the concert was to create a platform for the community of Selwyn to see the wealth and variety of talented musicians, singers, dancers and musical community groups who live in the district. “We were a bit nervous on the night as the bad weather made travelling difficult for some but we talked to civil defence and they saw no reason to cancel the event,” June said. “I want to thank everyone, both on and off stage, who got behind the event and helped make it so special for so many people.

p Concert organiser June Burney performs with the Ellesmere Pipe Band

“From the many positive comments received after the event the audience were clearly impressed by the fantastic talent on view and were so pleased the show went ahead despite the bad weather.” Among the performers were the Selwyn Community and Selwyn Youth choirs performing items from ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Grease’ while local band Algal Bloom had the audience on their feet dancing with their selection of Blues Brothers’ classics. Other musicals acts showcased included the student lead Lincoln High School Musical Theatre Group with an enthusiastic dance number from ‘Hairspray’, ‘Little Mermaid’ cast members from Kirwee Players and the Ellesmere Pipe Band. ¢ 1D Cardale St, Darfield Phone: 03 318 8836

Lincoln asserts dominance u by Kent Caddick

Lincoln reaffirmed its favouritism for the Selwyn netball premier title this season with a win over its closest rival when the competition resumed on Saturday. The competition took a break over the school holidays and then the previous week’s matches were postponed due to poor weather conditions. When round three finally got underway on Saturday defending champions Lincoln faced Broadfield which has been the team to put the most pressure on Lincoln throughout the season. As expected the first quarter was a tight affair with both teams playing aggressive, free-flowing netball. At the end of the quarter Lincoln had edged ahead 13-10.

While Broadfield continued to put up a fight Lincoln slowly gained dominance in the match and pulled away to take the game 50-34. Newly promoted West Melton got a taste of the big time when it faced Greenpark and while the young West Melton side fought well in the early stages of the game it couldn’t match the power of Greenfield who went on to win 82-24. In the other match of the round Southbridge was too strong for Halswell running out winners, 45-36. ¢

Darfield and Southbridge booked themselves places in this year’s final with contrasting semi-final wins on the weekend. Defending champions Southbridge eased into the final with a comprehensive 33-7 win over Prebbleton, whose home grounds will be the venue for this weekend’s final. Darfield had a little more of a battle on its hands as it faced last year’s beaten finalists Waihora at Darfield Domain. Waihora took the early lead through the boot of Harry Kirk who landed two penalties in the first five minutes of the match. Darfield struck back with a sweeping move which eventually saw Scott Mitchell slice through the Waihora defence to score under the posts. Alex Parker converted then added a penalty to push Darfield’s lead out to 10-6. Halfback Harry Pankhurst added to the scoring in the 26th minute when he crossed for a try and the conversion gave Darfield a 17-6 lead at half time. Scott McIlroy playing his 202nd for his club gave Darfield the ideal start in the second spell plunging over for a try just over a minute into the half.

Leading 24-6 Darfield throttled off, allowing Waihora back into the game scoring a converted try to close the gap. However, it was unable to score again and Darfield held on to win 24-13 and book its place in the final against Southbridge, the only team to have beaten Darfield this season. ¢

Tooling up on the lifestyle block The machinery and equipment you will need or want on a lifestyle block is directly related to the jobs you are likely to need it for. Here is a basic list of some the jobs you are likely to carry out on your lifestyle block and the tools need to help. Fencing Even a well set up property will require fencing maintenance from wear and tear or stock and vehicle damage. You will probably find there are always new fencing projects coming up too as you develop your block. Having the right tools for this job makes the difference between completing the job with or without tears. Here is what you need: • Hammer with claw head: Treat yourself to a nice well balanced one. • Fencing pliers: What you can’t do with these is not worth talking about. They cut and tie wire knock in staples and then pull them out and much more. • Spade: The best type for fencing is the trenching spade. It has a narrow blade so can fit down a post hole. Get a good and heavy one. • Posthole borer: Type depends on your soil. A mechanical one for

SCORCH COMMUNICATIONS

a tractor is excellent in free soil but hard work in puggy clay and dangerous if there are likely to be tree roots around. A simple hand borer with an almost flat face is excellent in clay. • Spinning jenny: This holds wire and unwinds it as you pull. It can be an elaborate collapsible job, such as those the stock firms sell, or you can make a simple one yourself. • Rammer: This is probably the secret of a good solid fence. The best will be the heaviest with the smallest ramming head. The handle should be solid steel, then it can double as a crowbar.

Scorch Broadband Terrestrial Wireless

RBI

• Saw: A small chainsaw is best. It is easy to carry around and can be used to either clear scrub out of the way or cut the tops off posts and shape stays. • Wire tensioner: This is a kind of lever which has pieces that slot onto the sides of a wire tightener that stays permanently in the fence once the wire is tightened on it. • Chisel: Between 38 and 5Omm wide. Shelter trimming Ideally you will have plenty of trees and hedges for shelter. If so, there will always be some maintenance to do. If you have specific shelter belt species

Lifestyle Block Services and hedges you will need them trimmed regularly by a contractor, it is unlikely that you would invest in a trimmer yourself. However you will have to deal with trimming overhanging branches and fallen trees. Here is what you need: • Chain saw: A petrol driven machine of a size you can cope with. They come in various sized chains — choose one to suit the size of timber you are likely to be cutting and the weight that you can handle comfortably. • Large bow saw: You will be able to do a lot of small jobs with one of these. Water system repairs Fortunately modern water systems are very easy to maintain and repair as they are made out of alkathene which is easy to cut and join. If you are in an area that does not get many frosts, there is no need to lag the pipe to protect it from freezing and bursting. Because of this, you will need very little in the way of tools for your water system. Here are a couple of essentials: • Sharp knife: You will need something for cutting pipe • Two adjustable crescent spanners Conditioning paddocks On small blocks it is often necessary to harrow and or top (cut) paddocks to keep them in good condition free of dung piles and rank grass. Weeds, such as thistles, ragwort and docks will need dealing with from spring to autumn. • Harrows: These are used to spread manure over a paddock to return it to grazing condition evenly. There are various different designs but they are basically a linked, uneven metal device pulled behind a vehicle. They last forever so tend to be bought second hand, though agricultural engineers will make a set for you if you are unable to locate a set. • Topper: If the grazing regime you have leaves you with rank, untidy paddocks at some times of the year, then cutting the longer grass will improve the paddock markedly.

If you have a tractor, you will probably be able to hire a topper. On a small block it is probably uneconomic to purchase one unless you find a cheap one and are mechanically minded. • Sprayers and de-weeders: Weeds will need spot or area spraying. If the area is not too large, a backpack sprayer will do the job. You can buy small boom sprayers for the back of 4-wheel farm bikes if you are a keen sprayer, or larger ones for tractors. For individual weeds such as ragwort, a ‘wand’ filled with herbicide is a cheap piece of equipment. It can often be as easy to completely remove the weed though with a small spade. Feeding out In winter and dry summers you will need some way of getting the hay to the animals. It is possible to bring the animals to the feed of course with small numbers, but even on a small block you will want to move the feeding area regularly to avoid pugging or spoiling one area. • Flat bed trailer: Only a small one is usually required on a lifestyle block, towed behind a vehicle. • Carry-all tray: This is a hydraulically lifted carrier for a tractor. Animal health For most animal health application, you will need to be able to use or have adequate animal handling facilities with a narrow race to hold animals still if not a head bale for complete immobility for the trickier jobs. Some of the items you are likely to use are: • Drenching gun: You will need one that will hold a minimum of 100mls for cattle. There are some nice, easy to clean guns on the market and handy for worming drenches to administering mineral supplements. • Ear taggers: You will need to ear tag animals from now on with the TB identification tags. If you have pedigree stock, you will also need the breed identification tags. • Elastrator: This is used for applying elastic bands for castrating lambs, calves and kids and docking lambs.

It is a simple hand held device that holds open a special elastic band during application. • Feet trimmers: If you have sheep or goats you will have to trim excess hoof off as required. A pair of feet trimmers is essential for the job. • Dehorning: For this operation you will either use an application of a caustic substance (bought from your agricultural merchants) when the animal is very young, or you will need a professional to remove the horns if the animal is too old for this. Neither will require purchasing equipment. Article supplied by lifestyleblock.co.nz. ¢

Practicality and purpose u by Andy Bryenton

Since the turn of the millennium, Hyundai have been scoring accolades and awards for their big seven-seat family adventure wagon, the Santa Fe SUV. Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor? With smart use of space, and a factor not

found in many large seven seaters — that’s how. When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings. From the ‘floating’ centre console which allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink cans as well as American-sized drivethru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up. The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing should there be something in the way) opens to reveal enough space to stow a

small castle siege’s worth of supplies. The easiest fold-flat seating system we have ever seen drops the back row for even more space — literally whitewaretransporting volumes of it. And with a couple of latches pulled, back pops a third row that feels as comfy as the first two, with its own dedicated air-con vents and a 12 volt charger for the ubiquitous tablet or phone. So far, so good — but what’s the extra special feature which turns another successfully practical Santa Fe into something more? Well, it’s the fact that

this all new, sharper looking model has been made lighter and given a velocitous punch, with a choice of a 2.4 petrol, a 3 litre V6, and a torquey 2.2 litre diesel. That means that the Santa Fe doesn’t just deliver the whole clan to school, work, holidays and sports events. It also delivers smiles for the driver as well — and that’s well worth a look. The addition of a little spice into the SUV mix, with crisp handling to match a suite of practical details, is enough to make this seven-seater stand out from the crowd. ¢

Advanced technology the best deterrent u by Andy Bryenton

The modern home contains more technology than ever before, and that goes double for lifestyle properties, and triple for working farms. That means the technology we use to protect ourselves has also advanced to keep up. While the original tried-and-true methods of locks, keys and deadbolts still form an advisable line of defense, the front line is often electronic. A deterrent simply by being installed, modern security systems work not by making it difficult to reach precious possessions, but by making it impossible to get away with the crime. Information is power, and systems such as wireless infra-red cameras which can send live footage direct to a mobile phone promise that no unauthorised activities will go undetected. Similarly, laser ‘tripwires’ set up across driveways and access roads can alert homeowners of the arrival of anyone to the property — whether it’s a tradesperson with an appointment, an expected friend, or an intruder at 3am. Gone are the days, for example, of blurry and out of focus images stopstarting across the screen. Today a good camera system can reveal

details which may well assist the law in catching a criminal — and crooks know it. Of course, part of the way a good security system works is by advertising its presence. While it would be possible to make every last camera invisible or concealed, letting the bad guys know what’s in store should they trespass on your property can serve as an effective deterrent. After all, even the most foolish criminal knows when it’s best to seek easier targets. The addition of speakers to some camera systems allows a warning to be given in real time, for example — direct from a mobile phone. Being told ‘you’ve been seen, and the police are coming’ is enough to make most burglars run. However, like most modern technologies the best fit for your home is one tailored specifically to your needs. Talk to your local security specialists soon to enjoy a worry-free summer season ahead. ¢
