Lincoln has secured top sport in the Selwyn netball premiership heading into the playoffs …

The club and golf course was the brainchild of local Laurie Manion who, at the time of the club’s formation, was a councillor with the now defunct Paparua County Council, which was subsequently absorbed by the current Selwyn District Council. A number of special events have been planned for the weekend of September 8 and 9 and current club president John Reid is looking forward to the occasion. “The celebration of this milestone recognises the substantial contribution of members, staff and community supporters including sponsors, that has resulted in the development of

a very significant golf club within the Canterbury region. “The club’s humble beginnings in the late 1960s gave little indication of the growth the club has seen over the 50-year period.” Mr Reid, who is currently employed as a project manager with the Selwyn District Council is a former New Zealand cricket rep and has a background in sports administration. “Sports clubs are really a part of the social fabric of a community and it was one of the reasons I joined the club some 10 years ago. Like churches and arts groups sporting clubs bring social capital to their communities by connecting people. Celebrating a 50-

year history helps us realise that the club is bigger than any of us and that we are simply custodians of the club at this point in time. “Like all golf clubs the club faces some challenges going forward but I am confident that the foundations set over the past 50 years will ensure a positive future for the club.” The club’s 50th anniversary weekend kicks of with a mix and mingle on Friday evening September 8. The following day the club will hold an ‘Ambrose’ golf tournament which will be followed in the evening by a formal dine and dance at which an anniversary cake will be presented. ¢

p The cast of The Wedding Singer get into the swing of things during rehearsal

The stage production is based on the hit movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and is set in the 1980s. The story follows Robbie Hart, played by Troy Scott, who is New Jersey’s number one wedding singer and the life of every party until his own fiancée Linda (Bella Hill) strands him at the altar. Halswell Drama Group spokesman Tim Gunther said the group is a small, but passionate group of locals who have been performing for the benefit of their community for over 50 years. “Don’t miss the chance to join the 80’s

party of the year, with a musical that promises to get you up dancing faster than your dad at a wedding,” he said. “The show features hundreds of great 80s costumes, with a fair share of puffy sleeves and big shoulder pads.” The show is directed by Carla Weber, with musical direction by Will Ernest and choreography by Sarah Hollander. The show will run from September 14 to 16, and 21 to 23, at the Halswell Community Hall on Halswell Road. Tickets are available from www.iTicket. co.nz. ¢

Re-usable mugs at Lincoln market u by Kent Caddick

Lincoln Envirotown has come up with a unique solution to encourage coffee lovers to dispense with disposable mugs which are not recyclable.

p Coffee lovers at the Lincoln farmers market can now use reusable cups for their coffee rather than non-recyclable containers

Lincoln Envirotown (LET) project manager Dave Fitzjohn said for some time now they have been considering how to ensure that less coffee goes into disposable mugs which are not recyclable. “We are happy to announce that with the help of a couple of businesses we have been able to do this fairly simply at the Saturday Lincoln Farmers Market. “Milada, the owner of the Czech Republic refreshment stall who provides the wonderful coffee at the market, has agreed to serve coffee in reusable mugs for those who request them.” Mr Fitzjohn said purchasing some cheap and cheerful mugs for the purpose was easy but there was a real concern about ensuring that they were kept spotlessly clean. “A solution to the problem was found when Lisa Bennett from The Laboratory attended one of our Responsible Business Seminars and discussed with us how they could help. “The used mugs are delivered to The Laboratory at the end of each market day by members of the Selwyn Timebank and after rigorous cleaning, are collected the following week for use by market goers.”

He said they are very grateful to all who have made this initiative happen and would encourage everyone wherever possible to drink from reusable mugs. “Disposable mugs are a recognised problem as far as landfill is concerned and many cafes are beginning to sell coffee-to-go” only in reusable mugs. “People are encouraged to keep a reusable mug in their car for those occasions when a coffee is essential to help you on your journey.” Mr Fitzjohn said they will be approaching other coffee vendors at Selwyn markets to see if they would be willing to introduce similar schemes. ¢

Top dog wanted

Selwyn residents who take their dog to work are being urged to enter their canine companion into the New Zealand’s Top Office Dog competition. The competition was instigated in 2015 by Frog Recruitment following a survey which found that over half of the companies surveyed regularly had canine visitors. Frog Recruitment director Jane Kennelly says the competition highlights the benefits of bringing a dog to work. “It’s well documented that allowing pets, particularly dogs, in the office is not just helping out their owners. It’s bringing positive benefits to the workplace, including improved morale, reduced absenteeism and stressrelated illnesses, and is helping with improving employees’ mental health.” Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand chief executive Shaun Robinson said there is evidence to support what people feel instinctively, that having pets around the office makes people feel happier and more relaxed. “Feeling happy and relaxed flows on to how we work and relate. I know in my own experience that when staff brings dogs into the office it makes the whole place a more emotionally warm environment and expresses that we are fully human at work,” Mr Robinson said. THE RECORD

Engaging millennials

Open mic for Rolleston u by Kent Caddick

u by Rachael Inch, Selwyn Creative Network

The momentum to engage with millennials is growing.

More often we are seeing politicians working to attract younger voters, companies marketing to a younger demographic, and in the creative sector, art establishments are looking at increasing engagement with a younger audience. The decline in numbers of volunteers is real as they are not being replaced by the new rising generation of people. So I often ask myself, what is contributing to this decline and what are the barriers that prevent engagement and participation? A recent Creative New Zealand study, found the main barrier to greater involvement in the arts for millennials continues to be a lack of time, followed by affordability, then doubting their creative ability. The number of people attending live arts events as a result of engaging online has decreased yet there has been increase in the proportion of people who have booked a ticket online, with more than 43% of people having done so in the past 12 months. In today’s society, smartphones are a necessity and tech driven social connectedness brings an endless

stream of distractions. Like it or not, we are a throwaway culture where everything has an expiry date and we can have anything we want at low cost or for free at the push of a button. Financial pressures, a changing job market and different priorities have contributed to the unpredictability of this generation which means it’s difficult for people to make plans and keep them. We are now faced with a movement of people who are ‘culturalpreneurs’ — those who have moved away from governance and hierarchical systems to a more collaborative approach. In order to break down barriers we need to open the door for people by acting as a ‘campfire’ by placing a stronger focus on connection with people from all walks of life. Not just those interested in the creative sector but naturally curious people who are focussed on increasing their social networks. These are the people we want to join us in conversations. Millennials are stepping into leadership roles nationwide. The work we do now to minimise barriers to arts engagement and the more we support them will ensure that Selwyn is the best to live, work and play in. ¢

The Rolleston Rugby Club will play host to an open mic night which aims to encourage Selwyn musicians to display their talent.

p Selwyn band The Reconstruction were formed after performing at a previous open mic night in Selwyn

The open mic night is the brainchild of Duncan Sole from the Ministry of the Mind Music. “We started these open mic nights in 2012 to give the Selwyn locals somewhere to meet, discuss, listen to and play music,” Mr Sole said. “Since then we have put on over 100 events in the Selwyn district.” He said the event is for musicians of all ages and experience. “All the gear is provided and all people have do is turn up and have a go. We have had everything from solo artists to full choirs to heavy metal bands . “The nights are popular with people who have never played live. A lot of these people come down with a guitar and a

friend or two for support and get up and give their very first live performance. We have seen a lot of people develop and even go on to form bands based on their participation in these open mic nights. “It is a supportive environment, no one is judging and everyone is there because they either love playing or love listening to live music.” The open mic night will be held at the Rolleston Rugby Club on Friday, September 8 starting at 7pm, with people able to bring their own food and drink. For more information people can check out the Ministry of the Mind Music facebook page or contact Duncan Sole on 0277 028 345 or email, Duncan. sole@citycare.co.nz. ¢

Cultural experience for students u by Kent Caddick

Rolleston College students celebrated the high school’s first ever International Day this month as part of an international week of languages. Students had the opportunity to learn about different cultures and languages and chose from a range of workshops including German waffle making, Pacifica printmaking, Gaelic football, Thai culture, Chinese painting, African drumming, Chinese dumpling making, and traditional Chinese dance. Principal Steve Saville said at the end of the day we enjoyed a special celebration assembly with learners performing and presenting aspects of their own culture and languages. “We learnt about the Phillipines, South Africa, Irish dancing,

Scottish drumming, and we even sang a song from Fiji. “We were grateful to have the support of teachers from the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury and we enjoyed watching the Chinese assistants singing Peking Opera, playing the Chinese lute, and performing a traditional tea ceremony.” Mr Saville said it is hoped that this day of cultural celebration will become an annual event which gives our learners the opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural experiences. ¢

Lincoln has secured top sport in the Selwyn netball premiership heading into the playoffs.

p Southbridge wing attack Awhina Dickson fires off a pass

The defending champions were too strong for Halswell at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday running out winners 70-44 to finish the round robin competition unbeaten. Lincoln’s closest rivals Greenpark were made to work hard in the first quarter of their match against Southbridge but as the game wore on Greenpark controlled much of the possession to run out comfortable winners 83-37. Despite the loss Southbridge have made the semi-finals but will face an

uphill battle to progress to the final when it comes up against the Lincoln juggernaut this coming Saturday. Greenpark will face Broadfield in the other semi after Broadfield accounted for winless West Melton 64-29. Lincoln is also the front runner in the Premier 2 competition with Lincoln B finishing top of the points table, one point clear of Rolleston, with Burnham and Dunsandel securing the other two playoff spots. The green, green grass of home We all know lawns add value to our homes, provide that outdoor space to lie and relax on, and are a key area for kids and dogs to play on. When it comes to new lawn it all happens in the root department, good soil preparation is paramount. This involves removing any weeds or debris from existing lawns, cultivating new beds to five to ten centimetres and levelling out the areas ready for seeding. Remember if it’s a larger area, you need to ensure there is a slope on the grassed area so water doesn’t pool and worse still puddle. One of the best ways to ensure success is to spread an even layer of lawn preparation mix on top of the soil. Sowing lawn seed is the cheapest way to establish a lawn and it’s easier than you think, so once the soil preparation is done, choose a fast growing seed. Under good conditions, warm weather and a little rain, new grass seedlings will appear within a week. Remember to fence off newly sown areas from the dogs, cats and children. Even through the grass appears quickly it takes a couple of months to be fully established. Simply scatter seed in an east to west direction then a north to south direction to ensure an even spread. Rake in lightly to ensure seed is covered. Water lightly

p A good lawn provides a home with a lovely space to play and relax and can add value to your property

and keep moist on a daily basis during the germination period. Like people, lawns need plenty to eat and drink. A thick, lush lawn stops weeds from establishing and insects from deciding to use it as a home base. The trick with feeding a lawn is only to use specific lawn fertiliser. This will ensure a blend of all the right nutrients to promote a healthy robust and long term lawn. Over winter and autumn, the ground

temperature drops dramatically, and it can cause lawns to suffer. Before the coldest months arrive, get rid of any lawn weeds. There are a good number of products available to help you do this. Lift the height of your lawn mower so you do not cut the grass so short. Longer grass keeps the soil a little warmer and the grass greener. ¢

Take a break, take a train by Theresa Murray

Want to take a break, kick back and let someone else do the driving? I thoroughly recommend KiwiRail’s TranzAlpine. A couple of weekends ago my husband and I took some well overdue time out and boarded the TranzAlpine at Rolleston, destination Greymouth. The train’s staff were warm and friendly, welcoming us on board, once seated they ran through the onboard safety guide, facilities and attractions. The train has a well-equipped dining carriage which you can order from

when you book your tickets online or purchase during your journey. I do recommend taking some cash even though the train has EFTPOS. There are areas where it is unavailable. The outdoor viewing carriage is great for taking photos and selfies with the beautiful scenery as your back drop, but take a coat as it can get quite chilly out there. There are toilets located between each carriage and plenty of space to take hand luggage as well as a carriage for larger bags, even bicycles. Leaving the Canterbury Plains the ride was smooth, at times you hardly felt like you were moving. The seated areas are warm and comfortable with plenty of legroom. The 212km journey took four and a half hours but the time flew by. The scenery is magical, crossing five major bridges, most with spectacular views of the Waimakariri River weaving its way across the Canterbury Plains. There are 17 tunnels, the longest being the Otira Tunnel at 8.5km which took about 12 minutes to get through. The rain the day before had washed away a lot of snow but there was

Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 1 - 29 April, 2018

still a decent dusting on the several mountains that make up this part of the Southern Alps. The train makes a few stops on the way to pick up and drop off passengers and at Arthurs Pass you get a five minute stop where you can stretch your legs. The train’s staff are happy to take photos of you with the snowcapped mountains of Arthur’s Pass National Park behind you. We stayed in Greymouth the night and returned the next afternoon. Sitting on the other side of the train going home we captured more spectacular views.

The onboard commentary which you listen to with supplied headphones is a wonderful history lesson and is perfectly timed as we rambled through the many little towns and places of historical interest. We arrived back in Rolleston at 6.15pm, relaxed and refreshed. With varying flexible rates KiwiRail’s TranzAlpine is great value and certainly something you should have on your bucket list. If you want to have a weekend escape — “take a break, take a train”.

Lifestyle Blocks

Passionate about walnuts u by Trudi Meyer

Trees have been grown on lifestyle blocks for a number of reasons including food production, shelter, shade, erosion prevention, aesthetic appeal or just for firewood. Trees help improve water quality, provide shade, stabilise eroding slopes, filter sediments and nutrients from runoff and provide a financial return for nut crops or timber. The secret to successful results is to match the tree to the purpose and the locality, and there is a lot of information out there to help you get the best outcome. Walnut trees are dual purpose trees grown for food and also for timber and are very long living — more than 100 years. In commercial orchards walnut trees are grown 7 to 10 metres apart and some trees have been planted in hedgerows. It is essential to protect the young trees from rabbits and stock nibbling away, as sheep and cows, especially calves, will happily munch on a tree sapling and kill it. Shelter from strong winds will help the trees to grow strong

and straight as whippy branches can break or twist in strong winds. Shaping and pruning is an essential task in the earlier years to set up a good frame and encourage growth. I am told that this can also be therapeutic. Growing walnut trees for crop or timber production makes financial sense as the development costs for walnut orchards are reasonably high at the start and returns from crop (or timber) are slow in coming for a number of years. From the age of about six years old, the trees will start to produce walnuts — a handful at first but up to two tonnes per ha (approx. 10kg/tree). There are a large number of 10 acre blocks suitable for a walnut orchard. Planting walnut trees and harvesting the grass in between the rows for hay or silage will mean that you don’t have to look after animals and in 15-20 years will provide a retirement income.

p Walnuts are extremely healthy and can earn a few extra dollars for lifestyle block owners

It is quite feasible to establish a walnut orchard in the country while working in the city and doing the orchard work over the weekend, which would generally involve pruning (winter) and watering (summer). Once the orchard is coming into commercial production it could be a very profitable enterprise that still leaves enough time to do all the things you could not do during the busy working life. There is scope for large plantations of walnuts. The operation can be completely mechanised and as such lends itself

to large-scale production. With crop yields increasing over the coming years, financial viability is expected to improve year by year. Demand for walnuts is growing. Just under 800t of walnut kernel (2,000t of walnuts in shell) were imported in 2015, up from about 500t a few years previously. But the taste of fresh, New Zealandgrown walnuts is superior to the imported ones, and remember walnuts are considered a very healthy food. Auto & Marine

Gunning for the crown by Andy Bryenton

When it comes to modern utes, many buyers entering the market feel they have a choice between two top contenders. There’s the Ford Ranger, riding high on years of awards and sales figures, and the Toyota Hilux, the once-all-powerful monarch of the rural roads, still slugging in a close second place. Now there’s a challenger so far out of left field it’s almost tempting to use a metaphor from recent Kiwi politics. The new face of LDV has been its range of big, dependable work vans for some time now, and they’ve gained traction with tradies and fleets in a big way. Now the company is bursting into the ute market with a four-wheel drive double cab that both looks the part, and carries a very affordable price tag. It’s called the T60, and it’s shaking up a sector already graced with new low-cost utes by Mahindra, Great Wall and Foton. T60 was first unveiled to the public during the National Feildays in June this year. Sales and marketing manager Warren Willmot says: “Feedback from the public display at Mystery Creek was incredible. The interest in this vehicle has been remarkable and now the customers who have signed up and been waiting for their T60s to arrive have the added bonus of the five year, 130,000km warranty.” LDV — manufactured by the immense SAIC autos company, China’s largest — plan to offer the T60 with both diesel and petrol engines, two suspension heights, three gearbox options and even the ability to

switch from ‘eco’ fuel saving mode to ‘power’ mode with the push of a button. Stylistically, the T60 looks aggressive and sharp, with the big chromed grille and chunky roll bars we’ve come to recognise as many new utes’ homage to the F150 out of America. That’s no bad thing — the big Ford sells a unit nearly every five seconds, and is going strong after decades.

LDV entered the market with a lot to prove, and their vans, people movers and transporters have shown that they can tango with the best. It’s a bold move to step right into the tough ute market and even tougher to contest the crown held so tenaciously by Ford. ¢
