Providing community connections is the aim of the Salvation Army in setting up a base in Rolleston. The Salvation Army recently bought a former residential building on Springston Rolleston Road to set up a base of operations to service Selwyn. Nestled behind a hedge opposite Rolleston College, Generation House is now becoming a first point of contact for many local groups and individuals. Leading the charge for the army in Rolleston are Lieutenants Nathan and Naomi Holt, members of the Salvation Army Rolleston Corp. “Just over three years ago Naomi and I were sent to set up in Rolleston and our first job was to see what the needs of the community were and to try and find a way to fill the gaps we found,” Nathan said. “Anytime there’s a growing community, there are growing needs, and when we see a place like Rolleston with a huge population boom, it’s an opportunity for us to jump in and help out. “In talking to the Selwyn Youth Council, parents and other groups, one of the gaps identified was that there was a lack of a physical space for community groups. “There are community centres and gyms and the like but not areas that have the ‘home away from home’ feel to them, which could be used for group meetings, but also have space for one-onone contacts like counselling services. “One of the Salvation Army’s reasons for being in a community is to benefit that community, and it is pretty typical of the army to establish a base of operations within that community, which

p Generation House has small and large meeting rooms and workspaces

is what Generation House is.” Initially Nathan said they looked at shifting a building on to council land. “However, with the cost of that and all the red tape that went with it, it seemed easier for us to keep it with the Salvation Army structure. “Around October of last year we decided that trying to do this collaboratively wasn’t working, and with our Jones Road Family Store doing well, it gave us the financial stability to be able to invest back into the community through a property like this. “So really it has been the generosity of the people in Selwyn who have contributed to us being able to set up

Generation House, which is kind of cool.” Groups such as the Selwyn Parenting Network and the Selwyn Creative Network have taken advantage of what the army is offering through Generation House but Nathan said they are not about providing permanent office space. “It’s more about providing a space where people can connect,” he said. “There are a lot of groups out in Selwyn who do help people but no one knows where to find them or put them. We can provide this at Generation House and also help them to connect with other groups.” continued on page 3 …

Mrs Elliot set up the foundation in recognition of her 22-year-old daughter who was brutally murdered in 2008 by her ex-boyfriend. The centennial evening event, ‘Open Our Eyes’, was put on by the Selwyn Lions Club as part of Lions Clubs International Centennial Celebrations in 2017. Selwyn Lions Club president Alison Benefield said the aim of the centennial evening was to open the eyes of the community to domestic abuse and relationship violence.

“It was very pleasing to have a large number of young people present and many of these people had the opportunity to talk one to one with the guest speakers,” she said. As well as Lesley Elliot and Bill O’Brien from the Sophie Elliot Foundation the crowd also heard from Selwyn MP Amy Adams, who is the Minister for Justice, on the community’s responsibilities to combat crime, and Tracy Henderson who is the South Island Lions club’s women and families coordinator. 

p West Melton Four Square owner/operator Brent Little left, receives an Automated External Defibrillator from St John Business Development manager Seema Bhavan (centre) and Four Square group manager Steve Alexander

The two stores in Selwyn are among 61 Four Square outlets in the South Island to receive a St John Automated External Defibrillator or AED. Four Square South Island has spent over $200,000 to buy the AEDS which St John said will make the lives of shoppers, staff and local residents a little safer. “It’s great that Four Square will have St John AEDs on site for the welfare of its staff and customers,” St John Business Development manager Seema Bhavan said. “AEDs are life-saving pieces of equipment, and it is well recognised now that quick CPR combined with swift use of an AED can drastically improve someone’s long-term recovery from cardiac arrest.” Four Square group manager Steve Alexander said AEDs save lives. “Each year more than 2,000 New Zealanders

will suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital,” Mr Alexander said. “Use of an AED within three to five minutes of collapse can increase the chance of survival by up to 40%. “Making the decision to work with St John to keep the hearts of our local communities pumping made perfect sense to us.” 

Nathan said the Salvation Army doesn’t provide social services but can assist in connecting people to those services. “When we did our needs assessment out here we found the district doesn’t have those dense inner-city issues, as Selwyn is both urban and rural, so the way we approach things out here is very different to what we would be doing in the suburbs of Christchurch, like Linwood.” He said one of the main issues they have identified being in Rolleston is families who are struggling.

“Not a lot of it is ongoing needs. It is more often about some event or emergency when something bad happens like an injury, and someone can’t work for some time and they have family to take care of, or they are just looking for advice on parenting. “We are not having people come in every week for food or anything like that.” For more information on Generation House and how the Salvation Army can help people, call Nathan Holt on 022 1909 2070 or email him at nathan.holt@nzf.salvationarmy.org. 

Getting creative in Selwyn Greenpark go top

Giving back to the Selwyn arts community is one of the reasons behind Rachael Inch’s decision to help establish the Selwyn Creative Network.

Greenpark has bumped Lincoln off the top of the table in the Selwyn premier netball table after the latest round of matches.

p Rachael Inch is one of the driving forces behind the Selwyn Creative Network

The Selwyn Creative Network was founded to nurture the growth and development of artists, creative groups, organisations, creative projects and creative enterprises in the district. Mrs Inch, a former Selwyn District Council arts coordinator, said nationally there is a recognised need to encourage the growth of new support systems and the way the arts are communicated to communities. “In Selwyn, the population growth has had a noticeable impact on our local support networks and research has shown a strong need to encourage more connection, support and encouragement for all creative people living here. “Research has also shown that there is a strong desire from the people living in Selwyn to see more opportunities to participate in creative projects, establish creative spaces, and a need to have a place to find out about what is happening and available around our district, particularly for the youth.” Mrs Inch has spent the past 14 years advocating for the arts in Selwyn both at the community and strategic level. “I have spent a lot of time being nurtured and taught by the people involved in some of the district’s leading arts organisations like the Malvern

Community Arts Council, Arts Heart and Selwyn Arts Trust. “During that time I have seen gaps in the sector that could benefit from some additional support and I want to mentor the next generation as I have been encouraged. “It’s important to me to provide an opportunity for creatives to connect with others, find purpose, share, collaborate and to feel like they belong as well as advocate and encourage participation.” More information on the Selwyn Creative Network can be found at the website selwyncreativenetwork. com or by contacting Rachael Inch at creativelyselwyn@gmail.com or by phone 03 347 0934. 

Greenpark upset Broadfield 7152 at the Lincoln Events Centre on Saturday to go to the top of the table albeit on points differential. The team is now tied with Lincoln on eight points with Lincoln sweeping aside the challenge of Southbridge 79 to 26. Greenpark’s win follows on from its 82-24 thumping of West Melton the previous week and has pushed it into the lead of the competition after two matches of round three. West Melton put in one of its best performances of the season against Halswell but couldn’t keep up the pressure throughout the match allowing Halswell to claim victory 64-31. This weekend Greenpark will be keen to keep the pressure on Lincoln when it comes up against Halswell, Broadfield will look to resurrect its season against Southbridge while

THE RECORD

Darfield falls at final hurdle u by Kent Caddick

Heartbreak for Darfield rugby fans with an overtime loss in the final of the Ellesmere division one competition for the Coleman Shield. Southbridge secured a rare Canterbury Country rugby double when captain Shannon Donald kicked a penalty in the 81st minute of the match against Darfield at Prebbleton Domain to retain the shield with a 16-15 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Coleman Shield now sits alongside the Combined Canterbury Country rugby championship cup in the Southbridge trophy cabinet. Like its win in the combined championship Southbridge needed to come from behind to secure the Coleman Shield. Darfield, which has never won the Coleman Shield, played the first half with the wind at its back and spurred on by the desire to mark flanker Blair McIlroy’s 200th match with a win took the early lead. Tries to prop Hamish Pauling and halfback Harry Pankhurst gave the Malvern based side a 12-0 leading heading into halftime. But foreshadowing what was to come Southbridge struck

back with Tom Turner racing in for a try after the first half hooter had gone. Donald converted and cut Darfield’s lead to 12-7 at the break. The second half was a real arm wrestle with neither side being able to cross the tryline. However, two penalties from Donald, one a long range effort from halfway, saw the Ellesmere based side edge in front 13-12 with 15 minutes to go in the match. Darfield’s hopes were raised when Alex Parker nailed a penalty to give his side a 15-13 lead with eight minutes left on the clock. Southbridge threw everything at Darfield in the closing minutes of the match and with the fulltime hooter having sounded Darfield fans could almost taste victory. However, Southbridge maintained possession and Darfield conceded a penalty and once again, like he had done in the Canterbury Country final, Donald stepped up to kick the winning penalty. 

or those readers who know me, there is nothing to reveal…for those who don’t… Seven generations of my family have lived at Wards Road with our Grandson being the most junior. My mum was born in the house we live in which was built in 1910 by local builder Mr Narby. When Mum and Dad married in 1946, Dad had just returned from WWll. They moved to Blenheim where I was born but Mum got homesick so home she came. As children we were always encouraged to play sport so we have been swimmers, hockey, netball, table tennis, tennis and golfers in our day. Dad was very passionate about the Returned Services Assn and instilled the same in me. I am very proud to wear his medals on ANZAC Day. Now as the years have unfolded I have taken on all sorts of roles in our great community. As office manager for PGGW in a full time role my days are busy. Outside the office I am a volunteer with the Malvern Community Patrol, Malvern Cancer Support Group, St John’s Hororata Parish Vestry member, a Justice of the Peace and one of my most rewarding roles yet is being a Marriage Celebrant. During this period of my life I have officiated near the headwaters of the Rangitata River

Westland payout on the way up Westland Milk Products says it has reached a milestone in its efforts to offer shareholders a sustainable and industry competitive payout. Westland, which has a major processing facility in Rolleston’s Izone business park is forecasting a net payout range (after retentions) of $6.40 to $6.80 for 2017-18 season. Westland chief executive Toni Brendish said that’s a substantial improvement on the two previous seasons. “Key to Westland’s revival has been the focus on improving efficiencies in the organisation which has resulted in the company achieving close to $70 million in savings and efficiencies in the last 10 months. “These savings alone have enabled the Board to forecast the more competitive payout for this coming season.” Ms Brendish said supporting the extensive cross company revision is the development of a clear strategy and purpose. “A great company has a clear understanding of what its purpose is and it articulates that throughout its company structure, with all staff having a clear understanding of how their role helps achieve that purpose.” She said Westland’s new purpose is ‘Nourishment Made Beautifully for Generations’. “This is a purpose that captures the essence of Westland. It draws upon the strength we derive from our environment, our land, and the generations of people

who have farmed it, and uses that to establish our point of difference with our customers. “We make nourishment, and we make it beautifully. That encompasses values such as ethics, trust, authenticity, quality, safety, capability and flexibility. “And, most importantly, it links the generations of our past to the generations of our future. “Westland would not be where it is today without the pioneering spirit of its early farming families. It is those original strengths and values that will take us forward in a market where, increasingly, consumers want to know the story of their product and the people who made it.” Ms Brendish said Westland’s size and facilities give it the capability to be more flexible. “It can segregate its processing systems to offer customers specialty products where there is higher value and an available market niche. “There are additional costs in becoming a flexible, niche market producer but by offering such a service, we can command a price premium that will not only outweigh the additional costs but deliver our shareholders a higher, more sustainable return in what will always be a highly volatile market.” 

Farming

Managing liquid assets u by Andy Bryenton

American inventor and scientist Benjamin Franklin once said ‘when the well is dry, you’ll know the value of water’. It’s a long way from being dry just yet, but the argument can be made that H2O is more valuable than gold, and that another famous quote will soon come true — ‘there are those who think water will one day become more valuable than oil, and those who know it’s already happened.’ The water industry — in terms of raw supply alone — tops a trillion dollars annually. And that’s without taking into consideration the single most important use of fresh water worldwide — feeding the planet as well as quenching its thirst. Farming uses a vast amount of water, but thankfully here in New Zealand we enjoy a water-

rich environment, compared to places such as the Middle East or North Africa. The ongoing challenge is to use it well, and to cycle it back into the ecosystem without significant contaminants. Much of the water which falls on NZ as rain reaches the sea rather than the pasture, prompting Federated Farmers’ Conor English to say in 2011: ‘It’s p Farmers have more processing power at their fingertips, allowing real-time data to inform their decisions on the land

not that New Zealand is running out of water, it’s that water is running out of New Zealand’. Capturing and using water wisely then, is the way forward. And other countries with water issues more severe than ours point to an information-based approach. Farmers in the United States West and Southwest are all too aware of water shortages currently, leading to the rise of advanced integrated information

systems which can pinpoint exactly where water needs to be directed. In cropping and orchard applications this means implanting a wirelessly networked series of probes into the soil, with each of them reporting back to a central computer. A map of the land can then be built up with a detailed hydrographic analysis overlaid — showing which areas need irrigation and at what concentration. Taking things

another step, even water reticulation and delivery systems can be placed entirely under computer control, with just the right amount delivered when it’s needed at the right time of the day, to prevent loss through evaporation. Leaks and loss can be identified faster and repaired before they become a large scale problem. On a macro level, similar principles are being applied to irrigation-reliant areas worldwide, with feedback direct from the crop advising the best use and coverage of water from large-scale irrigation systems. The potential exists to combine information from soil hydration monitoring systems with nutrient maps to increase the effectiveness of fertilizer spreading as well, crossing over into yet another industry. Many cutting-edge farming companies in New Zealand already offer hardware and software for water monitoring applications, so the competitive edge these systems offer is already being recognised in the field. As debate

continues in several parts of the country about the necessity for large reservoir construction projects to bolster future water needs — and, indeed, as water use and its environmental effects continue to make news as an election year ‘hot topic’ — any methods of making the final delivery of water to where it’s needed more precise are sure to be welcomed. The miniature BY ANN MORGAN Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven is a rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Jennifer and Lindsay Heperi for mini horses from across New Zealand, specialising in rehabilitating laminitis and grass-affected miniature horses.

“W

e care for minis, Shetlands and small ponies. We have two donkeys at present amongst our family of 21 fur kids,” says Jen. “We came about creating The Haven after being asked to help some wee minis that needed care. The owners didn’t realise that they are different to big horses and we learnt about laminitis when we took in a rescue mare with a one-day-old foal and it was a big learning curve.

Jenny Patterson from Calm Healthy Horses is Jen’s mentor. “Jenny has taught me so much and supports us with her amazing nutritional products. We also have regular volunteers including a home schooling family, and a photographer. “Five years down the track we have a special feeding programme. Some horses arrive and can hardly walk. Laminitis is like walking on crushed glass. “Laminitis is especially a problem with Canterbury’s fast growing rye and clover grass. These are high in potassium

The horse haven is successfully run thanks to the help of volunteers such as Lyall Agnew

Farming and sugars and so are muesli and commercial feeds. Many owners don’t add salt and this can contribute to a laminitis attack when lush green grass is added into the mix. This can make a horse become grass affected.” Jen says minis are often labelled little brats and are known for behavior problems due to being treated like large dogs. “This gives a completely wrong impression of how awesome they are. If you don’t understand about potassium and sugars in the grasses, and metabolic syndrome, you are quietly killing them.” Horses get Equine Metabolic Syndrome if they are fed mostly grass. Warning signs include a big thick hard cresty neck and fat lump pads on their body. “Signs of a grass affected horse include twitching and not standing nicely when you put the bridle and gear on.” The couple built three ‘paradise tracks’, special yards with untreated post peelings so the animals walk on a soft surface, carpeted shelter huts, and they have macrocarpas to get shade. “We have rehabilitated more than 30 laminitics in three years. They get their feet soaked in epsom salts and are given magnetic pulse blanket treatments. The nutritional programme involves adding salt, Grazezy, S.O.S and Premium Minerals, and hay is soaked and has no clover or rye in it. They start on the painkiller Bute, and

then are weaned onto a natural pain remedy made specially by Jill Shires and it takes two to four days to see a slight improvement followed by more improvement each day. Chronically affected horses take up to five weeks to become comfortable. At two weeks a horse may lightly trot and by week four they can canter again. “We build up their trust and they have the run of seven acres and come and go as they please. “Rescuing and retraining is easy. Rehoming is difficult. We are extremely protective and ensure those we do let foster know exactly how to care for them. “We recently became a charitable trust after five years of funding ourselves with help from many kind folk sponsoring us. Now we can apply for other sponsorship and grants.” The cost to care for one horse is more than $2,500 per year, or $20-25 a week to keep a mini in the lifestyle they deserve. “We have people nationwide rescuing horses from vulnerable situations. We are known in United States, United Kingdom and Australia with others wanting help. I work full time and we couldn’t achieve what we do without our amazing supporters. “Our volunteer photographer Tracey Agnew comes and puts every animal’s photograph on our facebook page every Sunday night so people can see how their horse is doing. “Mini horses should always be in pairs, not company for a big

Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven have rehabilitated more than 30 horses with laminitis in three years horse. They need the dentist to file their teeth because they keep growing and the animal cannot eat.
