Stopping The Garden From Drying Out This is a big challenge come the Summer months. Conserving water in the garden can be an issue, but there are some simple solutions to help retain that much needed water in the garden.

Mulch!

A good quality mulch will help to enrich the soil and add organic matter. South Hort Organic Compost is excellent at doing this and looks great on the garden. It is a good idea to then apply a bark mulch to the top. This will add to the protection of your plants and will boost water retention as well. South Hort have a variety of barks that will be excellent for this. Our top seller is Super Scree Mulching Bark. For more information on our other products please visit our website www.intelligro.co.nz

Other ways to help your garden in Summer:

- Keep up the watering! Your plants will love you for it – as will your lawn. It is best to water early morning or at dusk to reduce evaporation. - Install irrigation. This will help to keep the plants watered even if you are away. We sell a variety of watering tools in store so have a look on our website, or contact us for advice. If you have any queries, or want some advice about how to optimise your gardening through the warmer months, please contact us directly on 03 347 9415 or through the “Contact Us” area on our website www.intelligro.co.nz We wish to thank you all for your continued support through 2013, and hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year...

Darfield home to world’s biggest milk drier

 by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Thousands of Cantabrians attended the official opening of the world’s largest milk powder drier at Fonterra’s Darfield site. The milk powder drier, which has the capacity to produce up to 30 metric tonnes of whole milk powder per hour, and 700 metric tonnes per day, was officially opened by Selwyn MP and Minister for the Environment, Amy Adams as part of a public open day on Saturday. Fonterra’s director of New Zealand operations, Robert Spurway, said the completion of Darfield’s second stage was great for the local community and means that Fonterra can make the most of the co-operative’s milk produced in the South Island. “Canterbury is New Zealand’s fastest-growing dairying region,” Mr Spurway said. “The completion of Darfield Stage Two means that Fonterra can continue

to process the increasing milk volumes and meet the growing demand from customers around the world for quality New Zealand dairy nutrition,” Mr Spurway said. “The milk powder produced at Darfield will be exported to more than 20 markets worldwide including the Middle East, China and Southeast Asia, offering Fonterra the opportunity to continue to build its global presence overseas.” Fresh milk is collected from Fonterra’s farmer shareholders across Canterbury, delivered by tanker to Darfield, then processed into whole milk powder and packed into 25kg bags. These bags are then packed onto pallets, loaded into containers and delivered to port via the Darfield rail link. 

After the local body elections in October, many of our townships, halls and reserves are now holding their triennial meetings. It is good to see that in some areas new residents have gone onto committees to get involved in their community. The Community Board will be visiting Malvern townships on a rotational basis to hold our meetings. This will enable us to get closer to our communities and give help and guidance whenever we can. At the Courtenay A&P Show we had a display and members were available to talk to the public. We found this very rewarding as it is always important to listen to people and help them whenever possible. This year the board has again given Arbor Day grants to the eight primary schools in our area. We have also given grants to students for various interests they are pursuing. Castle Hill Village residents are constructing the Coal Pit Spur Track so we have been able to help them with this project. The council now have staff from Assets, Community Services and

Environmental Services available at Darfield Service Centre for the community to approach if they have any issues. They will be in attendance, Monday Tuesday and Wednesday of the second and fourth week of the month. I would like to thank you for the support that you give our Community Board and wish you all a safe and enjoyable Festive Season. 

The running of the event requires $7000 in funding. This year we have been fortunate to receive contributions from the Selwyn District Council, Malvern Community Board and the Four Winds Foundation. We are, as in past years, hoping that local businesses will support this event. The two contributions which are helpful to us are a cash donation or a product or service donation that we can raffle. We would be pleased if you could consider this request. Someone from our team will call by in early December to make further contact with you. There are currently some big changes happening at Greendale Primary School with a new principal, changed school layout and upgraded internet technology. A large somewhat wasted space in the middle of the school is to be converted into a ‘break out’ space for students to do independent work, a teacher aide room and a redesigned office space, according to out-going principal Mathew Thompson. “We’re going to have a middle space which is productive and efficient,” Mr Thompson said. from council funding  by Kent Caddick

Seventeen community events have been granted funding by Selwyn District Council through its new Events Fund. The fund was advertised for the first time in September and supports events held in Selwyn which are open to the public, attract local, regional and international visitors and benefit and promote the district. A wide range of events received funding, including Darfield’s Country Xmas in the Park, the Hororata Highland Games, Rolleston Community Fireworks Night, Children’s Day, the Selwyn Half Marathon, the New Zealand Young Farmers Competition, the Lincoln University Dairy Farm Open Day and Earth Hour events.

“As our population grows there are an increasing number of events happening in Selwyn which help make our district a great place to live in and attract people to come and visit,” council’s community services manager Lesley Symington said. “Events are often organised by community organisations and the council is pleased to be able to support their work through the Events Fund.” Just under $30,000 was handed out during this funding round leaving just over $17,000 in the Events Fund and this funding will be re-advertised in early 2014.

Life without cushions not an option  by Barbara Horn, Town & Country Interiors, www.town-country.co.nz

Cushions relate to interior décor the same way handbags relate to fashion — you can never have too many, square, round, rectangular, tubular or boxed shapes and as for the glory of fabric, pattern, print and trims, you are entirely limited only by the imagination. Most homes have one or more cushions on the couches, chairs or beds. Some even have them on the outdoor furniture or on the dining chairs. And of course we all know the giant cushions that are used on the floor or on the deck beside the pool. In fact in one home recently I counted over 95 cushions and not one looked overdone or out of place. Cushions can be made from almost any fabric these days and often the most coveted are made from other handcraft works like cross stitch, knitting or crochet and possibly handed down from another generation. Cushions can have flat side seams, contrast piped edges, luxury bead trims, fringe trims or even ruffles or bows.

Cushions can have all sorts of opening styles: zip, button, envelope, ties and tassels are the most favoured these days, and the filling inside them can also vary from a quality feather inner to a cheaper, plain Dacron fill. Some people find cushions of any description so annoying to deal with, they avoid them at all lengths. Most men raise their eyes to the ceiling when faced with numerous cushions to remove from a bed before being able to get into it. Leather couches and chairs do not like cushions, in any fabric, as the slide off so easily — cushions that are used outside and have not been designed to meet the changing weather elements will deteriorate very quickly. So, do the homework before purchasing or getting some made. Another observation of late is the repeated use of old, tatty, dirty, frayed,

some cosy cushions for comfort and style. Modern outdoor furniture also needs a lift. Cushions here should be made from an acrylic fabric, not cheap I agree, but they will look stunning and last for ages. Whatever you decide life without cushions is not an option, so go all out. 

limp, and so underwhelming patterned cushions that just drag down a freshly painted interior so quickly. If you have any of these, just lose them quickly. But could you imagine life without cushions? Bedrooms look totally loved and complete when the beds are fully dressed with Euro cushions contrasting against the pillows and perhaps a wee breakfast cushion or two in a WOW fabric, completing the stage. All have a purpose and should be used as such. Couches look naked without a few cushions at least and this is where it is so important to get the texture, shape, pattern, colour and numbers so right. Uneven numbers work best and mix up the shape and pattern to maximise the effect with your own personal style. Statement armchairs, chairs and benches do not always need to be dressed with a co-ordinating cushion or two. Understanding that some designer chairs are never meant to be sat upon regularly, these are the ‘maverick’ pieces that mark your ‘interior style’, and the upholstery fabric or framework materials alone may be enough. However, other more regularly used armchairs need to be ‘mothered’ with

Kiwi ingenuity improving children’s learning Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu, formerly The Correspondence School, has launched an online learning community for its students and their families called Storypark. Storypark is an online space where children’s learning can be shared and commented on by selected members. It has been successfully piloted by Te Kura this year by some of the school’s early childhood education students and families and will be rolled out in 2014 to a much wider group. Te Kura early childhood teacher Helen McConnell says an important part of Storypark is that it is a private learning environment. “Only family-selected people involved can share learning stories and support parents and children. We’re already getting great feedback from parents and creating results that were impossible to achieve without Storypark,” Peter Dixon co-founder of Storypark, says the ability to engage the family around the child’s learning builds stronger families and supports the child through their experiences in education. “For rural families or for families with special circumstances, this sense of closeness is incredibly beneficial,” Mr Dixon says. Recording the activities of the child from a young age through learning stories and ePortfolios has proven to increase family engagement. Family members can comment on the child’s Darfield Preschool & Nursery 1D Cardale St, Darfield Phone: 03 318 8836

story or add their own story. Of the benefits experienced by families, inclusion of family members who live too far away to be involved in day to day experiences is one of the most helpful. The Baker family, part of the Te Kura trial, say all their family love Storypark as they now feel involved in the children’s learning. “Nan and Granddad in Wellington have just sent an email saying how much they are enjoying the stories. Storypark is really special for our relatives overseas as there is only so much I have time for in letters or emails. “Now Great Nanny and Uncle Tim and Grandma say they are learning so much more about Jazmine and Ilana’s life on the other side of the world.“ Storypark has users in more than 45 countries worldwide which reflects the international nature of modern life. Te Kura has been assisting children’s learning and development around New Zealand for over 90 years. 

Christmas in Selwyn Perfect Christmas Pudding

They say the proof is in the pudding, and the origins of this old term refer to the freshness of the fruits used in it. Make sure that all the ingredients you use in this no-fail recipe are as fresh as possible – not last year’s dried up raisins! Ingredients 350gm of mixed raisins, currants, dried cranberries, and sultanas 50g cherries — real ones or glace, your call! 15g slivered macadamia nuts or almonds 50g plain white flour (not self raising)

ONE STOP SHOP FOR

FLOWERS & GIFTS

51 South Terrace Darfield

03 318 7101

Method Place the fruits and nuts into a bowl, then drizzle liberally with lemon zest and juice. Pour a large measure (about 100ml or a full shot glass) of brandy or cognac over the mix. Cover, and stand overnight. Next day, place this mixture and the remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Mix lightly, taking care not to ‘bruise’ the fruit

Transfer your old video tapes to DVD

Zest of 1 orange and 1 lemon Freshly squeezed juice of ½ orange and ½ lemon 50g vegetable suet (you can get this from most supermarkets, and in a pinch you can substitute it for frozen, grated butter)

30g breadcrumbs 90g brown sugar 2g mixed spice 1g each of ground nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves 5g salt 2 free-range eggs, beaten

pieces. Line your pudding tin with baking paper, and pour the completed mixture in. Seal the top with more baking paper and a layer of foil, as tight as possible. The trick is not just to steam the pudding, but to be able to lift it from the pan when it’s done! Accomplish this with a wide strip of foil looped under the pudding basin, making a ‘handle’. This will come in handy! Place the pudding basin on top of a trivet in a deep-sided pan. Fill this pan with hot water, to half way up the pudding basin. Then cover and bring the water to the

boil. Once the water has boiled, turn it down to a simmer, and wait for 5 hours as the pudding steams. Top up the water as necessary! After this process, the ‘handle’ you’ve made makes it easy to bring the pudding basin out of the water. Cool it, wrap it in greaseproof paper and foil, and let it mature in a cool dark place for as long as possible. Steam for 2 hours before serving as before, and don’t forget lashings of brandy cream or a flambé brandy coating to make this seasonal treat complete. 

Vegetable gardener’s diary for December  Article supplied by www.tuigarden.co.nz

By now you will be busy looking forward to Christmas, family, and having some summer fun. Try to relax and enjoy, but it is still a busy time in the garden. Special attention • Weeding is essential this month. Don’t let unnecessary weeds take valuable water supplies from your vegetables and herbs. Work around the stems of plants with a long-handled hoe. • Mound up the earth around potato plants to give the nodules a chance to sprout and also around Florence fennel, leeks and kumara. • Cut back flowers from angelica and coriander. Many plants will try to seed this month, so remove the flowers before they become unusable. • Watering is very important. Keep watering every day or set up an efficient irrigation system. Mulch around all plants using pea straw, grass clippings, stones or bark. A good layer of mulch will save precious plants from the dry summer heat. Sow • Sow seeds for beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, celery, courgettes, cress, cucumbers, eggplant, endive, leek, lettuce, mustard, parsnip, peas, pumpkins, radish, silver beet, spinach, spring onions, sweetcorn, tomatoes and turnips.

Transplant • Beetroot, cabbage, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, courgettes, cucumber, kumara, lettuce, onions, parsnip, peas, potatoes, radish, rhubarb, shallots and silver beet seedlings. • Plant fresh summer herbs like basil, chives, parsley and thyme in containers by your back door. Fertilise • As plants are being harvested, make sure you replenish the soil with compost. • Fertilise pumpkin and squash with liquid fertiliser. Make a brew of rotted animal manure, nettles and rotted seaweed. Steep together and drain. Pour over all plants throughout the summer to give moisture and growth. Harvest • Broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, dwarf beans, lettuce, onions, early potatoes, radish, silver beet and tomatoes. • Courgettes, all herbs, early carrots and peas and many other vegetables are now ready for picking. Get to them before the weather is too hot. More gardening tips and information can be found at www.tuigarden.co.nz. 

Home of the week

Too cute for words This 1920s’ cottage is just that — cute. The renovations are now complete and I am so proud to present her. Attention to every detail has been paid by the vendors to complete this renovation. The French doors welcome you to the smell of fresh paint and newly laid carpet. The kitchen is modern and very functional and a bay window displays the large rear section. I am enjoying the display of the old-fashioned roses in full bloom at present. The yard is fenced and awaiting your arrival. The cottage is heated by a log burner and a heat pump and the new carpet certainly will add to the warmth in winter. The bathroom is fabulous with a shower, toilet and basin and natural wood surrounds. There is a second toilet, a separate laundry and storage area. The property has two to three bedrooms, two doubles and one twin. On the 1012m2 section is a large single garage, work space and storage areas. Please don’t hesitate to view. My instructions are to sell. Viewing is by appointment and Open Homes, so — please call and arrange a time. Open Homes are both Saturday and Sunday until sold.
