Prebbleton youth worker Chris Martin, Joshua Foundation founder Chris Allan of Rolleston and Burnham’s Heather Wilson all received their 2018 Kiwibank Local Hero Awards at a ceremony in Christchurch late last week. The Selwyn local heroes and others from around the Canterbury region received their awards from Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel.
Ms Dalziel thanked the recipients for their achievements in the community, saying that the award ceremony is a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of many in the region. “This year’s recipients are selfless and dedicated people who have all had an impact on their community in unique ways,” she said. “The positive difference they have made to the lives
of others cannot be overstated. It’s important we as a community take time to reflect and acknowledge the special contribution these people have made to so many lives.” Chris Martin from Prebbleton, who was previously employed by Selwyn District Council as a youth worker, is the founder and lead consultant for 4YP (For Young People). continued on page 3 …

Summer is here!
Time to start using our Water Sense to help conserve water. ∙ Set your watering system to water overnight (9pm–6am) to reduce evaporation and help your plants better absorb water. ∙ If watering during the day use a watering can or hand-held hose – these use less water than a sprinkler. ∙ Check the weather – avoid watering in hot or windy conditions. ∙ Water your garden and lawn every few days. ∙ Check hoses and taps for leaks – indoors and outdoors.
For advice on water use see www.selwyn.govt.nz/watering
p Broadfield School pupils give a hearty welcome to Sam the Scarecrow as LUSA manager Fiona Kay carries him towards his spot on the Shands Road paddock alongside fellow straw people
The scarecrows, donated and sponsored by local businesses and organisations, are aimed at bringing the community together and drawing attention to the school’s 150th jubilee in March. They will be camped out on the Shands Road paddock for the next few months. Lincoln University’s Sam the Scarecrow joins straw folk such as Flick the Fireman, Lieutenant Dan, Roger, Betsy and Trev Broadfield and even an incarnation of All Black Joe Moody. Each scarecrow has his or her own story that relates to their organisation of origin. Lincoln University Students’ Association manager Fiona Kay said
Sam the Scarecrow is a very bright Lincoln student who loves the outdoors and wasn’t sure what he wanted to study when he first entered the university. “He chose a broad range of subjects in his first year but has now chosen to specialise in soil science as he enjoys the practical nature of the degree. “Sam is well on the path for his search for excellence at Lincoln University and is a Future Leader scholar.” She said in his spare time, Sam can be found engaging in all manner of outdoor activities and is a member of the Tramping, Climbing and Hunting Club. “He particularly enjoyed this year’s Lincoln University Garden Party.” ¢
Whooping cough Plunket is encouraging Selwyn mums, pregnant women and those trying to get pregnant to check they are immunised from whooping cough, to protect themselves and their children. The Ministry of Health has declared a national outbreak of whooping cough, as a total of 1,315 cases have been reported since the beginning of 2017. “Immunisation is a free, proven way that parents can protect their children against serious diseases, including whooping cough,” Plunket’s National Clinical Advisor Karen Magrath said. “You can be immunised when you’re pregnant and this protects your baby until they are fully immunised,” she said. “If you’re unsure if you or your children have been immunised against whooping cough, check in with your family doctor. It is never too late to catch up, even if a child has fallen behind on the immunisation schedule.” She said whooping cough can have serious complications and are often spread by family members or friends. “We encourage family members to protect babies from anyone with a cough. The community has a role to play in looking after young children during this outbreak.
p Plunket’s National Clinical Advisor Karen Magrath is urging Selwyn parents to ensure their children are protected from catching whooping cough
Make sure you’re completely well if visiting a baby.” If parents are not sure when their child is due for immunisation they can check the immunisation schedule at plunket. org.nz or call their doctor. Parents who have any questions or concerns can also contact PlunketLine 0800 933 922 or talk to their Plunket nurse. ¢

Christmas spirit alive in Rolleston by Mike Isle
One of the most unique Christmas attractions in New Zealand is once again opening in Rolleston this year, bringing joy to local families and aid to families in India.
p The Smithies family of Rolleston are once again bringing Christmas joy to locals and aid to families in India. Back row, from left: baby Michael, Sophie, Danella, Abigail, Roger and Gwenda Smithies, Bonnie and Benjamin. Front: Lydia, Jana, Jacob, Caleb and Jonathan
The Christmas Time Tunnel, which last year attracted 1,000 visitors to the Smithies’ family farm in Waterholes Road, will open again to the public this year, with the promise of new surprises and attractions. Gwenda and Roger Smithies and their family of 11 children, aged 15 months to 20 years, have once more transformed the grove of trees on their 7-hectare property into a 250-metre bush tunnel illuminated with fairy-lights, life-size figures and much more, as a familyfriendly, non-commercial, celebration of the very first Christmas. Gwenda Smithies said it was a real family affair putting it together. “Roger and the older children spent days clambering among the treetops erecting the lights and other attractions while on the ground younger members of the family were kept busy sewing, building, and creating new characters to add to this year’s display,” she said. Admission is by gold coin donation, part of which helps offset the cost of putting it together, but most going to support a charity in India which helps to alleviate poverty by assisting poor families to start their own businesses. Gwenda said her family chose the
charity because of its focus on family and because getting help to start a business had long term benefits for a family, often lasting for generations. “That is important for us as a family, and we can see the difference it is making.” This is the second year the Smithies family have created a Christmas Time Tunnel. The first was last year, and the concept took root soon after the Smithies family moved on to their new property in Waterholes Road “The property had a grove of trees on it, and we all felt there was something special about it,” Gwenda said. “It has a peacefulness, a tranquillity, and with the hectic pace of Christmas approaching we wanted to share that with other families and to make our grove a shared celebration of the first Christmas.” Gwenda said she was amazed that the family had 1,000 visitors to the Time Tunnel, particularly with little advertising and promotion. The 2017 Christmas Time Tunnel, at 293 Waterholes Road, Rolleston is open from December 16 to December 23, 9pm to 10pm. ¢

A sustainable garden designed and built by Rolleston College students makes extensive use of recycled materials.
An all-round team performance by Darfield-South Malvern earned them a giant-killer win over defending country cricket champions Sefton on Saturday.
p Liam Knowles working on creating one of the pathways in Rolleston College’s ‘Sustainability Garden’
The college officially opened its ‘Sustainability Garden’ on Monday. Fifty-five students and four teachers have taken the lead in creating the permanent garden since the start of term 3, designing, planning, building and planting the garden with the help of Rolleston businesses and community. College Principal Steve Saville said learners have had to apply a wide range of different skills and new lessons to the project. “Everything from woodwork skills to ecology lessons to applying maths concepts to the real world,” Mr Saville said.“The garden combines practical skills with theory and symbolises spirit values like collaboration, enterprise and innovation.”
He said recycled materials were used to build structures, archways and seats in the garden, close to the college plaza and netball courts. “The recycled materials suit the sustainability theme of the garden, which also encourages college learners to grow vegetables.” The garden contains pumpkins, zucchinis, broccoli, bok choi, cauliflowers, strawberries, raspberries and grape vines. Mr Saville said the garden is designed as a ‘sensory garden’, with plants that cater to the senses. “Plants you can eat and taste, flowers that you can smell and see, and a fountain and bug motel that provide noises to listen to.” ¢

Father Christmas comes to town Thousands lined Lincoln’s main road on Saturday for the arrival of Father Christmas to town. The annual Lincoln Xmas Parade was held along Gerald Street on Saturday morning in soaring temperatures, with people lining both sides of the street to catch a glimpse of the jolly old man in the red suit. As well as the visit by Santa, the crowd was entertained by a parade of floats put together by community groups, as well as vintage machinery, cars and bicycles including the odd
penny-farthing, a marching band and enough clowns to keep most happy. With the road closed off, stall holders lined the main street while there was also plenty of musical entertainment on offer. The parade was held at the same time as the special Christmas edition of the Lincoln Farmers’ and Craft Market, which did a roaring trade. The Record photographer Kent Caddick joined the parade. ¢

Fuel up It’s hard to shop sensibly when your blood sugar is crashing, so skip the bagels, the donuts, and the sugary breakfast cereals, says Keri Glassman, a registered New York dietitian. Choose a meal loaded with fibre, protein, and healthy fats — like oatmeal made with skim milk and almonds. Don’t dress just for comfort When people are feeling insecure, they tend to buy more, according to Darren Dahl, a professor of applied marketing research at the Sauder School of Business in Vancouver. So ditch the sweats and the sneakers if they make you feel frumpy and opt for something stylish, like flats or an on-trend top, which boosts your self-confidence. Lifestyles ‘n’ Farming
Caring for your livestock Aside from the commercial benefits which come from large scale farming, having livestock can be both a benefit and a liability for the smaller run holder or lifestyle block property owner.
The right match of seed to soil We understand that no two farming operations are the same. That’s why we specialise in offering expert advice about the right product for your farm. Talk to us about our extensive range of seeds and find the right match of seed to soil, for ultimate results on your farm.
www.specseed.co.nz
One of the benefits is the fresh and economic supply of consumables such as eggs, milk and meat, making the idea of owning stock very attractive. From this produce a variety of home staples can be made, such as cheese and yoghurt. Animals can also provide natural fibres, such as wool, alpaca fleece and mohair from goats, which can be used in clothing and home furnishings. While owning animals has a lot of benefits, there are some potential pitfalls that you need to be aware of. Firstly, you are legally responsible for the animals on your property and can be held liable for neglect or mistreatment. Owning livestock is a big time commitment and does restrict your activities, such as time spent away from home. It is important to have a reliable backup person organised who can look after your animals when you can’t. Animals still need looking after even in the snow and rain, so buy some wet weather gear and be prepared to brave the elements. One cannot emphasise enough the benefits of good fencing for stock management and neighbourly relations. Keep your stock where they’re meant to be. You will also need to think of stock handling facilities for times when your animals need treatments, shearing and loading on a trailer.
An area which has good shelter and housing also needs to be considered, as well as feed storage areas. Stock attracts vermin, so how will you take care of these? Animals don’t live forever so from time to time you will need to deal with sickness and death. You will need to build some knowledge about animal health and be prepared to call in the vet if required. When deaths occur you need a plan for the disposal of the animal.
Just like the birds and the bees, animals do procreate. Ensure your animals breed only if you want them to and that you are prepared for the birth of offspring. If you are well prepared and ready to put the work in then having stock can add a lot to your lifestyle property. A little planning goes a long way. ¢

Mark and Kelsey own one of them and in October 2016 they turned it into a stand-alone business, marketing their milk under the Aylesbury Creamery brand and starting a Facebook page to promote it. But it is not an easy process. Far from it, as Mark explained: “We keep

The market for raw milk is definitely growing Mark believes, and his sales are showing that. “I think New Zealanders are going back to natural things these days. In fact, they are passionate about it,” he said. “They like to know what is in what they eat and drink, and more importantly what is not in it.” To keep up with demand, Mark and Kelsey milk 13 heifers a day, once a day. That’s up from 10 heifers when they started their raw milk business a year ago, and there are plans to further increase the herd. The Williams family farm 160 hectares in Aylesbury. In most respects, it is a conventional dairy farm. They milk their main herd of 450 cows twice a day and that milk goes to the factory in Darfield for processing. But it is the raw milk that sets the farm apart. There are only

Mark Williams is a raw kind of guy. That’s the way he likes it. The Aylesbury dairy farmer, his wife Kelsey and children Reeve, 13, and Addison, 10, are managing a burgeoning business, Aylesbury Creamery, selling raw milk from the farm gate. They have about 30 regular customers each day, and that is mostly from word of mouth. Next year the family plans to test daily home deliveries, starting with Rolleston.

Lifestyles ‘n’ Farming “Because raw milk isn’t pasteurised, it misses out on the process that would normally kill harmful bacteria. That’s why hygiene is so important at the milking stage. “Every morning, before milking we wash the cows’ teats, udders and legs as well as our own hands and arms being covered with protective gloves and sleeves. And we are constantly recording the temperature of the milk. We need to get it down to six degrees immediately, then down to and maintained at 3 degrees in the purposebuilt dispensing machine.” Samples of the raw milk are also sent away for testing weekly. “If that testing detects anything out of the ordinary, we stop production immediately,” Mark said. But that is yet to happen. In fact, according to Mark, the biggest risk involved with raw milk is when it leaves his farm. “The risk is that people don’t chill the milk on their way home. If it is not kept chilled it or is left on the bench for periods of time it can go off very quickly.” Mark tries to help. He or Kelsey will explain what is required. They stress that the reusable glass bottles customers bring to have filled must be thoroughly clean. They have even developed Aylesbury Creamery branded chiller bags which are sold with the milk and are reusable. Mark won’t be drawn on the health

He will say, however, that the stricter hygiene practices, required by the MPI, Mark uses for his raw milk production has carried over to his conventional milking. Summing up, Mark believes the move to raw milk has been successful — and that goes for all the family. “I think what Kelsey, the kids and I have here is pretty close to the ideal for us. If successful, they will extend daily deliveries to include West Melton, Darfield and Kirwee. Details will be posted on the farm’s Facebook page: Aylesbury Creamery. In the meantime, farm gate sales will continue at 862 Aylesbury Road. ¢
