This year Rolleston celebrated its 150th anniversary …
p Foundation students for Rolleston’s first ever high school spell out the name of their house, or whanau group, at a get together of the students in Foster Park. Around 220 Year 9 students are set to become Rolleston College’s first pupils when the high school opens its doors in February next year. Principal Steve Saville said the recent community day allowed the children to get to know their peers and members of their whanau group before the start of school in February. Rolleston College is being built to eventually take up to 1,700 students, but only Year 9 students have been enrolled for next year. However, they have no idea who to thank for the relief goodies which arrived at a community dinner they held shortly after the devastating 7.8 ear thquake last month. Jackie Wadsworth of Skevingtons Road, which is just north of Kaikoura, said they decided to hold a community get together after power was finally restored to their area.
“We are a group of lifestyle block owners and we had been without power for almost a week, so we thought holding a pot-luck dinner would be a great way to celebrate having the power back on and to let off a bit of steam. We received a box of goodies from one of the relief agencies which we put on the barbecue table and everyone helped themselves.” Ms Wadsworth, who is a supervisor at a
Kaikoura playcentre, said all they had to go on, in regards where the parcel had come from, was a note part of which said ‘sent with love from Darfield and surrounding districts’. “We would like to thank the people behind this as it was really appreciated at the time. It meant a lot to us,” she said. continued on page 5 …

The search is on for the best six butchers in the nation and Selwyn butchers are being invited to nominate themselves for a place on the national squad of six, which will travel to Belfast in March 2018 to represent New Zealand. Team Manager and selector, Todd Heller said he’s looking for butchers with not only the technique to rival the best in the world, but those with passion and a love of the industry. “What these butchers do when they come together as a team is incredible. I’ve seen team members pour their heart and soul into this competition and they come out on the other side with lifelong friends and mentors from all around the world. “What the Pure South Sharp Blacks do is not dissimilar to any of our national sporting teams; they’re representing us
in an international arena, putting New Zealand on the map,” Mr Heller said. The World Butchers’ Challenge is designed to showcase the highest level of skill in butchery, and involves each team breaking down a side of beef, pork and a whole lamb into a themed display of value-added cuts, all within a threehour time frame. The Pure South Sharp Blacks won the competition three consecutive years in a row, from 2013 to 2015, and are seen as world-leaders when it comes to innovation in butchery. They will be keen to wrest the trophy off currentchampions France. The team is sponsored by Pure South, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and New Zealand Pork. The 37 winners of the Local Heroes category were presented with their awards at a special medal presentation ceremony, held at Addington Raceway recently. Nearly 350 medals will be presented nationwide, with the Local Heroes recipients going on to be considered for the 2017 New Zealander of the Year Awards which will be announced in February. Broadfield’s Don Babe has been an advocate for cycling in Canterbury for more than a decade and is currently chairperson of the Christchurch-Little River Rail Trail Trust, chairperson of Spokes Canterbury and treasurer of Cycling Action Network. Mr Babe was nominated for the Local Hero award anonymously. According to the nomination: ‘Having committed countless hours in his advocacy efforts in Canterbury and further afield, Don is considered to be one of the most wellknown and influential advocates for cyclists in the South Island. ‘Don’s commitment to service is evidenced by the extent of volunteer efforts. Through his role with Spokes, Don’s mission has been to promote the bicycle as a mode of everyday transportation. Spokes also maintains a vision that by
2020, Christchurch will be considered one of the top-five cycle cities in the world. ‘Don has made a difference to the lives of many by enabling both children and adults in the greater Christchurch region to enjoy a fun, safe, bicyclefriendly environment’. Mr Babe was presented with his medal by Christchurch City councillor Anne Galloway and Kiwibank CEO Paul Brock. “Many of these medal winners are unsung heroes whose selflessness has had a profound effect on the lives of so many in the community,” Cr Galloway said. “Those acts of charity, optimism and commitment are the glue that hold a community together, and as a community we must stand alongside one another and give thanks for their efforts.” The 2017 New Zealander of the Year Awards are presented in six award categories: Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year, Senior New Zealander of the Year, Young New Zealander of the Year, New Zealand Community of the Year, Innovator of the Year and Local Hero of the Year. The overall winner for each category will be announced at the New Zealander of the Year Awards Gala in February. ¢

With a predicted dry summer and its accompanying increased fire risk, the Selwyn District Council is encouraging residents to be on lookout for any possible flash points. Selwyn Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said, while fire restrictions haven’t yet been introduced, people need to be aware the fire risk is increasing as vegetation dries out and the weather becomes warmer. “Rain during October and November has meant there is lots of growth around our district,” Mr Marshall said. “Conditions are expected to dry out in December and January which will increase the fire risk. “Unless we receive a substantial amount of rain in the near future, it’s likely fire restrictions will be introduced this month. It’s critical people act now to reduce the fuel loading on their properties.” He said if people have long grass on their property, now is a good time to either graze it or mow it on a cooler day to reduce the risk of a

fire affecting property. “People need to be very careful to check conditions before lighting any fires, and take all safety measures. The fire risk varies day to day and when strong winds combine with hot weather the fire risk becomes extreme. Usually alerts are issued when a moderate to strong nor’wester is forecast.” Selwyn District Council will be monitoring fire indicators over summer including monitoring daily weather conditions and using the Council website (selwyn.govt.nz) to advise when the fire risk reaches extreme levels in Selwyn. ¢

Kirwee on track Water plan on stream to host field days A plan that contains rules to improve the quality of water throughout Selwyn and other parts of Canterbury will come into full effect early next year. Environment Canterbury has announced that the Land and Water Regional Plan would be made fully operative on February 1 2017. Controls on the leaching of nitrates are set by the plan, which covers a wide range of land-use activities impacting on the quality of water in both urban and rural areas. Environment Canterbury councillor Peter Skelton said the effect of making all the plan’s rules operative was that the Natural Resources Regional Plan would be revoked from February 2017. “Most of the Land and Water Regional Plan was made operative in 2015,” Professor Skelton said. “The parts that were not made operative at that time were those that were subject to unresolved appeals.” He said all appeals have now been resolved, meaning parts of the plan relating to the taking and using of surface water, and dams and damming, can now be made fully effective. “A notable milestone for the future of Canterbury’s water management has been achieved. All the regionwide rules implementing community
aspirations for water are in place. Further, we are well advanced with a number of sub-regional plans that will help deliver water quality outcomes for local catchments.” Plan Change 1 covering the Selwyn Te Waihora zone was made operative in February this year, and Plan Change 6 affecting the Lake Forsyth area will be made operative on February 1 next year. Professor Skelton said as well as addressing water quality and quantity issues, the Land and Water Regional Plan enables earthquake recovery and considers other important issues for Canterbury’s future, such as land stability, flood protection and biodiversity. He said the package of rules positioned Canterbury well to address legacy water issues and meet future challenges. “I would like to pay tribute to the wide range of people throughout the region who have contributed to date. “However, there is still much to be done. We have the framework. Now we need to implement it so it has the impact we are all looking for, which is improved water quality in Canterbury.”

Heading into their second event at their new home in Kirwee, the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) is thriving and growing. Organisers say next year’s event from March 29 to March 31 will be bigger than ever and it will underscore the fact that SIAFD is New Zealand’s premier demonstration event for agricultural machinery. Good farming is about sustainability, in keeping critical nutrients in your soil and out of New Zealand waterways. “Water and land management remains one of New Zealand’s greatest environmental challenges. In particular, there is potential to look more closely at the relationship between sedimentation of waterways and soil losses from land use. The loss of elite soils is also of particular interest.” - Ex-parliamentary report Gypsum aerates, conditions and improves soil structure promoting an optimum environment for pasture growth, reduced pugging, enhanced flocculation and helps mitigate the flow of nitrates and phosphorus to rivers and lakes while providing calcium and sulphur nutrients.

“I can’t remember exactly what was in the parcel as life has been a bit of a blur for the last few weeks, but I do know it contained preserves as I now have a lovely feijoa and date chutney at home.” Ms Wadsworth lives on a lifestyle block property with her husband Ian Bradshaw, who owns the Dolphin Encounter tourist venture, and their two children Toby, 9, and Rosa, 6. She said they were fortunate that where they lived there was little damage to homes. “Most of us had some minor damage to our houses but nothing substantial. We were fortunate there was not a lot of damage to buildings in the township itself, but the damage to the landscape
is another matter.” She said life is starting to return to some semblance of normality with goods returning to the supermarket shelves, and power and phone back. “But there is an element of the surreal about it and one of the hardest things to comprehend is the lack of control you have. You can’t just get in the car and pop down to Christchurch, businesses which rely on the tourist trade face an uncertain future and dairy farmers are unable to milk their cows.” Ms Wadsworth said she believes getting a main road open into Kaikoura from the south and the dredging of the harbour to allow the marine tourism businesses to start operating again need to be the priorities for recovery. ¢

Council’s tsunami reminder The Selwyn District Council is sending reminders to coastal residents about what to do if there is a tsunami warning. The move follows the recent Kaikoura earthquake and the following tsunami warning which led to the evacuation of some Selwyn residents from around the Rakaia Huts and Fisherman’s Point areas. While many did evacuate, some chose to ignore the evacuation warnings. Around 500 Selwyn households have recently received a letter from the council with advice on what to do in a tsunami warning and how to receive alerts. The information was sent to households located in Selwyn’s coastal areas and around the edge of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. Selwyn District Civil Defence Controller Douglas Marshall said those properties were located within what is called the ‘orange zone’. “If a tsunami warning was issued, people inside the orange zone may need to evacuate this area.” Mr Marshall said the boundaries for the orange zone have been identified based on scientific advice from Environment Canterbury on the maximum credible event that could impact Selwyn. None of Selwyn’s main townships are inside the orange

Rolleston Railway Station as it looked from 1923 to 1967. Photo courtesy of the Canterbury Railway Society Archive
This year Rolleston celebrated its 150th anniversary, and rail played a crucial part in the formation of what is now Selwyn’s largest urban area. Dave Palmer was the last person to man Rolleston Railway Station, from 1984 to 1989, and he looks back at the history of rail in Rolleston.
R
olleston Station was manned from its opening on October 13 1866 until March 31 1989 when it succumbed to the downsizing of the Rogernomics era. Early in the 1860s the Canterbury Provincial Government made plans for a railway line south from Christchurch.
William Rolleston pushed for the line to follow Lake’s Track (now the Main South Road and Two Chain Road) to a point just south of William Weeden’s ‘Halfway House’ (near the misspelt Weedons Ross Road). Rolleston’s idea was to build a coal tramway from this spot to the Malvern lignite coal
fields, and roads to the grain fields of Ellesmere. His view prevailed and the terminus was given his name. George Holmes & Co built the line, and on opening day a special train, with Provincial Superintendent William Moorhouse and other dignitaries on board, made the 22km journey in 31 minutes. Three weeks after its opening, Rolleston Station passed into literary history via Lady Barker’s Station Life in New Zealand. ‘We … reached the station — a shed standing out in the plain — in time to see our horses safely paddocked before the train started for Christchurch,’ she wrote. The ‘shed’ was the first of five stations. It stood east of the track, close to the present Rolly Inn. main line and the new Sheffield branch about 1880. The first station master, William Bourke, stayed 12 years. His annual salary in 1867 was £163.16s. To begin with, trains ran two return trips daily. Holmes set first class fares at 6s.6d single, 10s return. Second class was 5s and 7s. These were a day’s wages for most, and later, prices were reduced to 4d per mile first class, 3d second class. The Great Southern Railway was built to a gauge (track width) of 5ft 3in, but from 1870 the central government required all lines to be built to 3ft 6in gauge. The Sheffield branch, begun in 1871, was built to the new gauge. Rolleston must have been a busy place as passengers and freight to and from the west had to change trains. There was a proposal to send coal to Rolleston by ‘gravity working’ — a push at Malvern to send wagons on their way, slowing up on the last, flat, 5km to Rolleston. But conventional wisdom won the day and two A class 0-4-0T engines were stationed at Rolleston. As it turned out, the coal trade didn’t reach expectations, but business in grain was good. Trains would stop anywhere on the line for passengers or freight. Two proposals were tabled in the 1870s for tracks connecting Rolleston to Ellesmere. Both were scrapped. But central government opted to extend the Sheffield branch through to the Greymouth anthracite coal fields. It was another fifty years before the Otira Tunnel was opened and the Midland Line completed. As much bigger trains would now run on the line, Rolleston Station and yard had to be moved to its present site. Until 1960 Rolleston was a major shunting yard with trains for both south and west destinations made up there. Wednesday was sale day at Addington, and wives would take the opportunity to go shopping. Until 1955 a reduced return fare of 1s.6d would be charged on Wednesdays. The ‘Springfield Mixed’ (combined passenger/goods train) was very popular and in those days when most phone calls were toll calls, the station and the train itself were social hubs. In 1927 the Duke and Duchess of York (later to be King George VI and
Engines which once plied the Christchurch to Rolleston line, and further south and west, were on display at the Rolleston 150th celebrations
Queen Elizabeth) called in unexpectedly. Tai Tapu landowner Sir Robert Heaton Rhodes, who was also on board, had forgotten his silk-top hat, needed that night for a reception for the royal visitors. The train stopped at Rolleston while his chauffeur brought one over. Rolleston also played host to some of His Majesty’s guests who apparently were not fond of his accommodation. Escaping from Paparua Prison, they would board a goods train at Templeton. Prison warders would turn up at Rolleston and always got their man. Railway staff were asked to keep out of the way as some rough justice ‘may or may not have been’ meted out. At 11.15pm on February 4 1967, the station was burnt to the ground. Arson was suspected but could not be proven. The present building, opened in 1969, is about half the size of its predecessor.

After a day of back-to-back testing with the five other category winners, it amassed more points than its rivals to claim the title. It was also the winner of the AMI Insurance Safety Award. Mazda’s new CX-9 was praised by the judges for its outstanding value, the new model bringing improved safety, more luxury, and enhanced drivability and economy from its clever turbocharged engine, while still delivering the family friendly features of a large seven-seater. The judging process rewards the car that is best across all criteria, not just majoring in a few of them, and the CX-9 had no real area of weakness. For safety, specification, build quality and overall value, it scored well, as it did on practicality. It’s very user friendly yet it also scored well on the performance front, judges acknowledging the new engine both from a power and economy standpoint, while gaining good marks for refinement, ride and NVH. The CX-9 was also the winner of the AMI Insurance Safety Award, recognising advancements in passive and active safety features. The win is seen as the democratisation of advanced safety features, as there are still many six-figure luxury cars with

less standard fit safety systems than the CX-9. Mazda includes the usual ESP, airbags and reversing camera in the CX-9, as well as autonomous emergency city braking, blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert on all models, while the Limited Edition comes with radar cruise, adaptive LEDs, active lane keeping, a heads-up display and also a driver attention alert. The previous CX-9 was not ANCAP crash tested but this new one has achieved a full five stars, with a score of 35.87 out of a possible 37 points. To determine the overall Car of the Year Award winner, each class-winning car is driven by a panel of six judges over the same drive loop, and each is scored out of 100 points covering five criteria.
These take into account design (which also includes safety), performance (not only how well it goes but what impact it has on fuel reserves), driving dynamics (how it corners, rides and overall refinement), practicality (accommodation, ergos, versatility) and value (specification, quality and bang for buck). Helping even the field, each of the criteria is weighted toward the particular strength of the vehicle category, which has seen winners from all classes over the past few years. The class winners were: Suzuki Baleno (under $30,000); Honda Civic ($30,000–$45,000); Mazda CX-9 ($45,000–$60,000); Audi A4 ($60,000– $100,000); Jaguar F-Pace (Luxury); and Ford Focus RS (Performance). ¢

Motoring
Busting the two party system by Andy Bryenton
Down here in New Zealand and Australia, it’s always been a two-horse race in the world of big V8 four-door tourers. Folks nail their colours to the mast at an early age, declaring for Ford or Holden and often defending their choice loudly and with malicious use of Bathurst victory statistics in the nation’s bar-rooms. But there’s a third big automaker in the US, and they’re poised to fill the niche left behind as the classic Commodore and the iconic Falcon leave the spotlight. Sure, the likes of Mustang and Camaro stir the blood, but there is a special place in New Zealand motoring for a big, four-door, comfy, growling V8 touring car. One that’s not German, or indeed Japanese, considering options way back to the Lexus LS400. So, presenting the Chrysler 300 SRT. A hyper-muscular version of the Ralph Gilles designed 300C, which caused such a stir in the early 2000s with its ‘Goodfellas’ good looks and its purring hemi eight, the SRT shares that trio of letters with muscle car royalty. Think Viper, Hellcat and even the monumental Ram pickup truck — and you’re in the ballpark. Not to be outdone, this boosted version of the second generation letter car, packs in 350 kilowatts — that’s 460hp in the old money. Add in space, comfort and the fact that, seen from a certain angle, it has a bit

of the Bentley about it, and this looks like a real contender for the vacancy at the top of the four-door V8 table. Now, to be clear, the 300 SRT is not specifically what the Commodore or XR8 were. Those were bold, brash, workingclass heroes made good. The Chrysler stems from a bloodline that contains a shot of W211 Mercedes, and it brings luxury and an aura of subtle menace to the road. That low roofline, massive rims and the subdued growl of the 6.4 litre eight, hint at knuckle dusters hidden up a tailored suit jacket sleeve. Take it out for a spin, though, and it’s smooth and unruffled, eschewing the tyre-shredding pantomime of the maddest Fords and Holdens downunder. The sound is there, but the fury is tamed by adaptive damping suspension, a balanced eight-speed box and Brembo performance brakes. The perfect

gentleman, then? Well, they did fit the SRT with launch control for a reason. But inside, you’ll find a calm space at the centre of the 350 kilowatt storm — a place that reminds you that there were Valiants on Mount Panorama alongside
those Falcons and Commodores. If ever there was time to consider the third party, here it is. You will be pleasantly surprised at what the ‘grandson’ of the mighty Valiant Charger can do! ¢

Holiday Guide
Take a break in your own backyard by Andy Bryenton
Living in Canterbury is great in so many ways, but one of the best is often ignored as we look to the glossy brochures and television advertisements of exotic overseas holidays. Did you ever wonder what those same ads are showing people in foreign lands? The answer, of course, is that those keen holidaymakers from around the world are seeing images of our own ‘backyard’ — the stunning backdrop of Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth, the adventure playground of the Kiwi outdoors, and the natural majesty of

places like the MacKenzie Country. The desire to visit New Zealand — and the South Island in particular — is at fever pitch worldwide. But there are many of us right here who have not looked beneath the surface and taken a closer look at this tourist wonderland.
We are open 10am – 4pm Thursday to Monday in the School terms and every day during school holidays.
The Toy Collector is a collection of toys from the past and present on display and will trigger nostalgia whether the visitor is 8 or 80. It is an eclectic collection designed to appeal to all genders, ages and level of interest. Some of the items are rare, some are old and rather ragged, and some are new.

Farming
Rise of the machines on the horizon by Andy Bryenton
Pulp science fiction has been warning us for decades about the dangers of robots wanting to harm humanity, but in the very near future, we many need the help of mechanical farmers to ensure we can feed the burgeoning human population. Some new technologies are already in the field. We are already seeing the start of the technical revolution in farming, as sensors for soil nutrients and water create new efficiencies in irrigation and fertiliser application. Farmers are already deploying drones to check on their herds of livestock or, like the Yamaha R-Max, to seed areas too rugged or boggy for heavy trucks. But with the population set to grow by a further two billion in the next few decades, it’s possible that data analysis and the application of advanced mathematics and theories from such disciplines as computer programming will not be enough to feed us all. That’s where ‘agbots’ come in — agricultural robots which are already at an advanced stage of development in many labs overseas. Some have already been tested in the field and found to increase productivity. Take for example the Bosch Bonirob, developed in Germany. This boxy, four-wheeled
module looks like the Mars Rover, but it is designed to track down rows of crops, scanning with laser radar and powerful cameras to detect pests and weeds. These it can eliminate with an array of tools — which do the job of pesticide with no side effects. Consider the eBee, a tiny drone made to work as part of a literal ‘swarm’, flitting about above the fields and updating 3D-overlaid maps of crop growth, irrigation patterns, water retention and more. The ultimate stage — for now — may be the Autonomous Harvest System, made by Kinze Manufacturing and Jaybridge Robotics. It looks just like a powerful tractor towing a combi-wagon — but as it traverses the fields, you’ll notice that it has no driver. The entire machine is guided by a suite of robotic ‘eyes’ and GPS, and aside from fuel stops, it never tires or needs breaks. Machines like these may replace low-

tasks, and create a better harvest for the future. ¢

New president for Rural Women New Zealand Lincoln University graduate Fiona Gower has been elected the new national president of Rural Women New Zealand. When not fulfilling her community commitments or running after her schoolage children, the new Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) president works on the family farm at Port Waikato. For the past year Ms Gower filled the role of RWNZ vice president and has served on the RWNZ National Council since 2013. The national council has been phased out in favour of the newly elected Board for Rural Women New Zealand following a decision at the RWNZ National Conference in 2015. Ms Gower was a Kellogg’s rural leadership scholar in 2009, and holds a diploma from Lincoln University in wool technology. “My aspiration is that RWNZ will become the rural organisation of choice within the wider sector for all women, communities, organisations and decision makers,” Fiona said. “RWNZ will actively promote its strong charitable role and authoritative rural voice, while retaining its strong social support network.” Ms Gower is presently on the OnewheroTuakau Community Board and Waikato Conservation Board, as well as secretary of the Onewhero Swimming Club and a
member of the Port Waikato BeachCare committee. She is also a trustee for the Landcare Trust. Meanwhile, Rachael Dean will continue on as the National Finance Chair on the board. From Cambridge she is currently also on the Board of Sport Waikato and on the Council for Licensed Firearms Owners, and represents RWNZ on the Firearms Community Advisory Forum. Margaret Pittaway from Cromwell, has also been welcomed onto the board after serving on the RWNZ National Council for several years. She has used her extensive nursing experience in filling her role as convenor of the health portfolio for RWNZ. Several new faces have joined the newly elected RWNZ Board. Sue Higgins from Nelson, a director on the Access Homehealth Board, joins the board along with Wellington’s Penny Mudford, who is currently chair of the Racing Safety Development Fund and board member of the New Zealand Walking Access Commission. The third new board member is Janet Williams from Waikato, who has recently received a Zonta Woman of Achievement Award and is currently a Waikato Federated Farmers Regional Executive Board representative for RWNZ. ¢

Farming
Versatility from a three-pack by Andy Bryenton
On smaller farms — or helping out with the additional chores on a large property — a tractor that’s nimble and versatile rather than huge and powerful is just the ticket. The trick to combining the best aspects of a big, implement-hauling workhorse and a small, lightweight ‘jack of all trades’ seems to have been cracked by John Deere with their 5E series of small utility tractors, which accomplish with three cylinders those tasks other machines need four to tackle. In fact, that lightweight 2.9-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine is one of the reasons the 5E series from the big green and yellow machinery giant is so successful in its role. Up to 75 horsepower flows smoothly through a gearbox that delivers 12 forward and 12 reverse gears to a full-time four-wheeldrive setup. Losing engine weight and boosting power with a turbo mean that those wheels put less pressure on the ground, giving the John Deere a relatively light footprint for all its size. There’s
Pay attention!
also another benefit to be had that’s especially useful when working in close confines or in unorthodox areas such as orchards — a tiny turning circle. In fact, it’s orchardists, vintners and other small-area, high-intensity holdings which really get the most out of the 5E. From a low ‘headroom’ clearance with an open cockpit to the ability to lift 1.8 tonnes, fetching and carrying in and out of barns and around fences, gates, trusses and pipes is no problem. It’s easy to see where you’re going and easy to see the four corners of the 5E, even with a big hydraulic bucket up front. They’ve beefed up the front axle for just this reason as well, making sure long days spent lifting don’t take a toll. Opt for a cab and the open fields, and John Deere switch it up to make the 5E a comfortable place to put in a day of tilling or sowing. John Deere have
