Selwyn has a new ambulance thanks to 35,000 hours of fundraising by Rolleston, Selwyn, Malvern, Halswell and Christchurch Chinese Lions Clubs, grants from Lions International Foundation and the Lloyd Morgan Lions Charitable Trust and a donation from Westland Milk products. The $180,000 ambulance was presented on Sunday to St John and blessed by Reverend Laurence Ennor at Selwyn St John Rolleston hub where it will be based. Taking delivery of the ambulance, local St John chairman John Sunckell said the efforts of the combined Lions clubs and their affiliate organisations reinforced the prevailing attitude of Selwyn communities supporting community. “It’s tremendous that they put the time and effort into supporting charitable groups who in turn support others,” he said. Mr Sunckell said the ambulance would be of huge benefit to rapidly growing Rolleston and Selwyn, and St John was “incredibly” grateful for the ongoing support by Lions and the wider community. Speaking for the Lions clubs, project chairman Bill Pickering, said it was immensely satisfying to see the new ambulance ready to start serving the public from Rolleston Hub. Mr Pickering congratulated St John personnel for the professional and dedicated way they help people in distress, sometimes in horrendous circumstances and often risking their own lives as well. He thanked St John for their welcome and hospitality and presented a plaque to go on their Rolleston Headquarters as a permanent commemoration of the Lions’ gift. He also thanked the six contributing clubs for their efforts and

p Rolleston Lion’s Club President, Leo Slattery (left), receiving a St John plaque from John Sunckell as a commemoration of Lion’s fund-raising efforts

the Lions who had supported him in his role as chairman. Mr Pickering said Lions was the largest service organisation in the world of more than 1.4 million members and the local clubs were able to qualify for a project grant of $96,000 from the Lions Clubs International, based in Chicago. This organisation has already contributed more than $1,000,000 into Christchurch and Kaikoura after the devasting earthquakes there. The presentation ceremony was attended by members of the Lions clubs involved, members of St John, Michael McEvedy Knight Commander of the Order of St John, who officially

accepted the ambulance on behalf of St John and Lions’ vice district commander John Whyte. St John Staff demonstrated sophisticated features of the new tier-three Mercedes ambulance most notably the power operated pull out stretcher capable of negotiating rough ground while supporting a patient with a minimum of effort by attendants. Costing $40,000 on its own and with heart monitoring equipment at $30,000 mean those items and other fittings make up more than half the cost of the ambulance. Last year, St John Rolleston attended more than 3,500 call-outs. 

“Canterbury Golf has started the new initiative Selwyn Futures Golf to bring together junior players from the different clubs in the Canterbury region,” says Hororata Golf Club coaching coordinator, Pip Deans. “The children played nine holes in ambrose on a shortened course. It is going to be a regular event to encourage the young to come along and play golf as a chosen sport, get to know each other and make new friends. The children enjoyed competing together and played with great team spirit.”

Pip says it is a good opportunity for families to come out with parents having input on the day as well. “It was a great see families enjoying time together on the course and encouraging their children to try something new. The Willows Cafe at the club did a great job with the catering, and everyone had a good time.” The next junior day is this Friday, December 21 as part of the club’s school holiday programme. Residents rank Selwyn Friendly communities, good services and facilities, peaceful, open spaces, events and activities, and feeling safe — these are just a few of the reasons why most local people enjoy living in Selwyn. The council’s 2018 annual residents survey shows that 91% of people surveyed agreed that Selwyn was ‘a great place to live’ — the same proportion as last year. A majority of residents also gave the thumbs-up to the services and facilities that the council provides, with 69% of residents rating the council’s overall performance as good or very good, similar to last year’s 70%. The result continues a long-term trend, which has seen the overall performance rating increase steadily from 58% in 2013. Among the services that respondents rated most highly were rubbish collection (95% rated good or very good), recycling (94%), parks and reserves (85%), libraries (84%), and water supply (76%). Across the 24 different council services surveyed, the biggest increases in satisfaction were recorded for organic waste collection (up 4%), making roads and footpaths safer (up 3%), and playgrounds (up 3%). Services which saw a significant decrease in satisfaction included water races (down 6%), public toilets (down 6%), cemeteries (down 5%),

land drainage (down 5%), the resource recovery park (down 5%), and sewerage and wastewater (down 4%). Mayor Sam Broughton believes it is no surprise that people feel positive about the district. “Selwyn has a lot to offer — thriving townships, a growing economy, good schools and services and a stunning environment right in our back yard,” he said. “It’s great to hear that most residents think the council is doing a good job overall, but it’s also important to get feedback on the areas where we need to lift our game. “We do take careful note of the findings of this survey each year and look at how we might need to shift our priorities to provide better service in key areas.” The survey was carried out in June and July by independent research company Research First and surveyed 421 people using telephone, cellphone and online surveys to provide a statistically representative sample of Selwyn’s population. The full residents’ survey is available on the council’s website. ¢

Overseer report welcome Collaboration focus

u by Mike Isle

Environment Canterbury has welcomed the Overseer report released on 12 December by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE).

Lincoln University has appointed a new chancellor who says he will put collaboration at the top of his agenda when he takes the reins in January. Bruce Gemmell said his emphasis would be on partnerships with the university’s neighbours, as well as land-based public and private institutions, and he intends to accelerate the Lincoln campus rebuild.

p Overseer protection of our waterways

The Regional Council Uses of Overseer report was completed by the PCE as an independent investigation of the Overseer model, which is used to estimate nitrogen leaching from farmland into freshwater catchment systems. “We welcome the report, which helps to inform the debate around the role of Overseer both as a method to improve freshwater quality as well as its use as a regulatory tool,” said Environment Canterbury’s director of science, Stefanie Rixecker. “Of most interest is the recommendations made in the report on how to improve Overseer as a regulatory tool, which is timely and useful.” The PCE has recommended a comprehensive evaluation of Overseer, including an independent peer review, as well as undertaking a sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. In addition, the report recommends greater

transparency on how the Overseer model works, as well as better alignment of the ownership, governance and funding. There may also be a bigger role for central government in providing guidance around how models are used in environmental regulation. “While we’re aware of the limitations of Overseer as a regulatory tool, we are also encouraged by the culture of continuous improvement around the model to make it more relevant for both farmers and regional councils,” Ms Rixecker said. “We have been using Overseer for around 10 years. Our latest update to the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan, Plan Change 5, eliminates reliance on a fixed Overseer estimate and replaces it with a threshold based on irrigated area or the use of winter grazing of stock. We look forward to continuing our work in the Overseer space. ¢

Mr Gemmell’s appointment follows current chancellor Steve Smith’s decision not to seek re-election at the conclusion of his term in December. Mr Smith has been a member of the Transformation Board since joining the Lincoln University Council in 2016. He led an ambitious project to deliver on the report’s recommendations following his appointment to the chancellor’s position in June 2017. He cited the financial and operational stability achieved by the university during this period as one of his greatest highlights, alongside Lincoln’s new value proposition and brand platform. “We have exceeded even our own expectations for financial, operational and academic success,” said Mr Smith. “Most importantly, our staff and students seem optimistic about our future, while at the same time, we have leapt ahead in the international rankings.” Mr Smith said the university’s recent announcements regarding the Joint Facility project delay and the partnership negotiations with the University of Canterbury had not affected his decision, a point

p Lincoln University’s new chancellor Bruce Gemmell

supported by the incoming chancellor. “Steve’s leadership of the council and unwavering commitment to the university cannot be questioned,” said Mr Gemmell. “His decision is for personal reasons and the council is deeply saddened by this decision.” Mr Smith described the timing of the announcement as “a perfect storm”, but with the university facing further change, now was the most appropriate time to step down. Mr Gemmell takes over the role of chancellor from January 1, 2019. ¢

Christmas message

u by Jill Dickie

u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

December is often a very busy time for everyone with the end of year concerts and prizegivings for those with schoolage children to attend along with work functions. There can be a lot of pressure to get things done before the holiday period and to buy gifts and prepare food for family get-togethers. Despite all of the hectic activity, it is often helpful to reflect on the year that is drawing to a close. As always, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job is the variety of people I am lucky enough to meet both in my role as the local MP for Selwyn and as the Opposition Spokesperson for Finance. In October I selected Katelyn Twiss, a year 12 student from Ellesmere College, as my Youth MP for 2019. Katelyn will be representing Selwyn at the Youth Parliament in Wellington on July 16 and 17, and I am sure she will do a fantastic job. She will also be working with me as an advocate for local youth during her term as Youth MP, which runs from March 1 until August 31 next year. Other highlights during the year included attending Culturefest and

Photographs should be of the Selwyn area and include people having fun. If you’re heading up to Arthurs Pass or Castle Hill, snap a few shots as you’re on the walking tracks or picnicking near the river. River and camping photos are always welcome too — walking, playing volleyball, horse riding and swimming included. Alternatively, maybe you plan to laze in the warm sun and read a book — that can be photogenic! A trip to Lake Coleridge boating or fishing or even just to enjoy the views, these are also great photo opportunities. BRIGHT BEGINNINGS MONTESSORI

Sunscreens in the shade u by Mike Isle

Ahead of what is already stacking up to be a long hot summer when Selwyn’s beaches and rivers will be major attractions, Consumer NZ has found that six out of ten New Zealand sunscreens tested don’t stack up. Consumer NZ chief executive, Sue Chetwin, said six products didn’t provide the sun protection claimed. One product — Coola Classic Body Sunscreen Plumeria SPF30 — only gave low protection of SPF6 in Consumer NZ’s test, despite claiming high protection of SPF30. The other five products were labelled as SPF50 or SPF50+, but Consumer NZ’s test found they did not meet these claims, returning SPFs from 16 to 42. “While these SPF ratings mean the sunscreens still provide moderate or high protection, our testing found they don’t provide the protection claimed on the label,” Ms Chetwin said. Four of the companies, including Coola, provided lab reports showing their products had been tested and met their label claims. However, two reports were from 2015 and Coola’s report was from 2013. In response to Consumer NZ’s findings, Coola is commissioning a review of its formula. “There’s no requirement for sunscreen manufacturers to regularly test. The Ministry of Health said it is working on legislation to regulate therapeutic products, but no decision has been made on whether it will include sunscreens. “This legislation provides an opportunity to finally make the sunscreen standard mandatory.” Partial Dentures

Sun safety tips • Look for sunscreens with an SPF of at least 30+, plus water resistance and broad-spectrum protection • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside • Apply plenty — about one teaspoonful (5ml) for each arm, each leg, your back, your front and your face (which includes your neck and ears). That adds up to about 35ml for a full-body application • Ignore ‘once-a-day’ claims. Sunscreen should be reapplied often — every two hours you’re outside • Mopping up sweat or towelling dry reduces protection: apply another coat of sunscreen immediately • Sunscreen is only one part of your defence. Safe driving practices

Improving patient care

u by Mike Isle

The recent Canterbury Health System Quality Improvement and Innovation Awards recognised and showcased how changes have been made to improve the quality of health care, says Canterbury District Health Board chief executive David Meates.

Are we there yet? We soon will be. For many of us, the holiday season will soon be on us and with it the chance to kick back and relax. Nevertheless, there is one aspect of the holiday season when relaxing should be, tragically could be, the last thing we do — that’s when driving. Driving during the holiday period presents its own set of problems and issues. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) lists many of them on its helpful website, as does the Automobile Association. Both provide helpful guides and tips to help cope with what can be difficult and unusual driving conditions. They point to the fact that at this time of the year holidaymakers are often driving longer distances over often unfamiliar territory. There are increased traffic volumes, particularly out in the country. There are more distractions such as traffic jams, fatigue and —yes — noisy and irritable children. Of course, there is also the everpresent spectre of drunk drivers. To mitigate the risk of crashes at this time, the NZTA and AA both recommend extra care and giving the road and other road users the attention they need and deserve. Even if we are keeping local and know the road well, we need to accept that others, particularly at this time of year, do not. For local driving or going longer distances it is best to plan a journey to avoid the worst traffic peaks if possible, and — in any case — allow plenty of

time so as not to rush the journey. Schedule regular rest stops. Watch out for fatigue. Long trips are tiring, and fatigue can be deadly when driving. Share the driving with someone else if possible. Plan your route — some routes may be safer than others with more passing bays, etc. Others may be longer but carry less traffic and may, therefore, offer a better, safer alternative. Check your vehicle and trailers and caravans. Are they safe — warranted — and have they been serviced recently? When packing your vehicle, make sure that everything is securely stowed — and that includes those toys and other loose objects we give the kids as back seat distractions — don’t give them any more than they can safely handle. Don’t eat while driving — use your rest breaks for that. Ultimately, however, it comes down to being alert, diving to conditions, and keeping cool — literally and figuratively. Follow these steps and holiday driving will be what it should be — a safe and enjoyable experience for you and other road users. ¢

Christmas recycling

Eatery joins the Fresh Air Project

u by Mike Isle

Very little beats the excitement of unwrapping Christmas presents. However, the wrapping itself and the amount of product packaging at this time of the year can be a bit of problem.

Fortunately, the Selwyn District Council has a way of getting rid of that extra Christmas waste. The council is encouraging residents to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by making sure we dispose of season recyclables responsibly. Christmas gift wrapping, they say, can be recycled, though not if it is foil wrap. Cardboard packaging is also recyclable and can go in the bin. What can’t go in the bin, the council warns, are toys, clothes, polystyrene, drinking glasses and crockery. “Remember, if it is not listed on the sticker underneath the bin lid, then don’t put it in the bin,” a council spokesperson said.

7

Fush eatery in Wigram is the latest in a growing list of eateries in and around Selwyn to go smoke-free as part of the Fresh Air Project, a collaboration between the Cancer Society and the Canterbury District Health Board.

A full list of what can and can’t be recycled is on the council’s website Selwyn.govt.nz/rubbish or phoning 03 347 2857. Council also advises that rubbish and recycling collections scheduled for Christmas Day (Tuesday, December 25) will take place on Saturday, December 22. All other collection days will be as normal. The Pines Resource Recovery Park at Rolleston is also open most days over the holidays, including the weekends, and has a drop-off area where most recyclables can be disposed of for free. Check selwyn.govt.nz/pines for opening hours. ¢

The Fresh Air Project supports the goal of Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 to reduce smoking levels across New Zealand. A recent survey from the Cancer Society shows that 95 per cent of consumers support smoke-free outdoor dining. Co-owner of Fush Anton Matthews is well-known around town for his passion for conserving the Maori language. He offers customers a menu in both te reo and English, and also runs te reo classes. Now he has his sights on protecting the health of Maori by joining the Fresh Air Project. p Fush co-owner Anton Matthews “Fush is embracing auahi kore Fush is one of 60 hospitality venues (smoke-free) dining to protect our staff and customers from the dangers of across Canterbury making their outdoor second-hand smoke, and to set a good dining areas cleaner, greener and more example for tamariki and the broader pleasant environments. Festive season pet care by Yolande Howell BVSc(Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre

With the school holidays, Christmas and New Year season coming up many of us will be making plans for our holidays. Whether you are staying at home or travelling, there are many things to take into account to create a safe and happy festive period for your pets. Many cats and dogs will have already been booked into a boarding facility. If you are looking for a facility for the first time, it is prudent to visit the premises and see where your pet(s) will be staying. Visit any time during opening hours, ask about what foods they feed, exercise for the animals and vaccination requirements. Make sure the kennels and catteries are clean, comfortable, not too noisy and well-staffed. If your pet has special needs such as medications and foods, ask whether the staff can accommodate these needs. Dogs will need to be up to date with their vaccinations including kennel cough vaccine; each boarding kennel will have a different requirement so check and make sure you enquire ahead before the stay. The same applies to cats, but they will need their flu vaccinations up to date. It is a good idea to give your pet worm and flea treatment prior to their stay also. Most catteries that board rabbits don’t have specific vaccination requirements for rabbits but

best to check with the staff anyway. Always provide emergency contact numbers including your vet’s and take your pet’s food, collar, leash, medication, favourite toy, and bed. If you have several pets that need boarding, it may be more economical to hire a house or pet sitter; there are several of these services around Christchurch and Selwyn. Ask to meet the people who will be visiting your home, make sure you like them and that they are happy to follow all your instructions because all animals are different. Get references, ask around for feedback. If you are travelling within New Zealand with your pet these holidays, let your vets know ahead of time; your cat or dog may need their vaccinations up to date and depending on your destination, additional parasite control and vaccines may be required. In addition, there may be other health issues to address. Make sure your pet is accustomed to travelling, even short trips, if not done often, may be very stressful for animals. If you are staying with friends, ensure they have a fenced garden or yard and that their own animals are vaccinated. Some hotels, rental properties or even campgrounds permit pets. Look them up online. If you are flying, plan ahead as you may need to order a special crate or the airline may ask for other records. Whether you are driving or flying ensure you bring enough of your pet’s regular food and medication for the duration of the trip.

IS YOUR DOG IN NEED OF A WASH OR GROOM BEFORE XMAS? We now have 2 mobile groomers working in Selwyn.

If you worry about your pet becoming very stressed during the trip, speak to your vet. There are options to help your pet during the journey. For the folks staying home, there are ways to safeguard your pets from hazards we commonly have around during the festive seasons. Christmas decorations may pose a hazard to pets, decorations may be eaten or glass baubles broken. Pets may eat Christmas tree needles or drink water from the base of the tree which may contain preservatives. Keep decorative lights out of reach and stop your cats from playing with tinsel or long pieces of string or wire. Beware of popular festive plants such as poinsettias, lilies, holly berries and baby’s breath. Popular foods during the festive season may also be dangerous to your pets. Keep chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, sweets and alcohol out of reach. In addition, please refrain from giving human food. These include and are not limited to onion, garlic (often in stuffing), leftovers and cooked bones (chicken, turkeys, roasts, ham). The above-mentioned foods are well known to be dangerous to animals. People seem more likely to offer it to pets when there are guests around or after a few alcoholic beverages. If you notice any signs of illness, including loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, tiredness, or discomfort, contact your vet for advice.

VetEnt Darfield would like to wish our clients a very Merry Christmas.

Living with bees u by Ann van Engelen

Alissa and Glynn Cleaver have a small property in Kirwee with 37 varieties of fruit trees mostly growing on espaliers and beehives to produce their Kirwee honey. “Growing the fruit trees along wire protects them from birds, and the fruit hangs down and looks great. It means we can plan our garden better and the children are able to easily pick the fruit they want,” says Alissa. “When we first moved here, there were absolutely no bees to be seen so we swapped a few chicken coops for beehives and started from there, and it has become a family business. I call them Glynn’s midlife crisis, where most guys have cars, Glynn has taken to bees.”

The right match of seed to soil

Glynn comes from the Wakefield family — well-known honey producers in New Zealand. “We can trace our honey back to the hive it came from, and each jar has a code to identify it. The colour of the honey changes as well depending on where the hives are kept. It is raw honey, not heat treated, and we have hives from Akaroa, up to Heathcote, Springfield, Whitecliffs and beyond, there are so many different blossoms for the bees to feed from. My nan helps, and my mum does the grafting of the queens.

Our children Max, Rex and Jack, are all involved helping to make the boxes and frames. They have their own beekeepers suits and are learning how to care for their own hives. We tell them if they like the honey they need to know what to do to care for the bees. “Bees are very therapeutic — since the earthquakes, Glynn has had to learn to relax again, and the bees are great for this — we breed quieter bees. Max and I are allergic to bees, so we are extra careful and ensure we have EpiPens available.

People need to realise you can get stung anywhere or an allergy can appear at any time, and EpiPens are lifesavers. “You can find nan at most of the markets selling our honey; she loves interacting with the public. The Fire and Emergency website fireandemergency.nz has important information about how to reduce fire risk. “There are some simple things you can do to reduce the risk of fire at your property,” says Fire and Emergency deputy principal rural fire officer, Al Hutt. “When you are working on your property or in the garden, keep machinery well maintained to reduce potential sparks, and mow lawns in cooler conditions. “Also, assess the risk of fire to your property and get rid of any shrubs, long grass or trees near your home, which could burn easily. “Having an escape plan for your family and pets is also vital. If you are

burning anything during the summer period first find out whether they need to obtain a permit through Fire and Emergency.” To report long grass or any other fire hazard fill out an online form via fireandemergency.nz/at-home/ overgrown-sections and visit Fire and Emergency’s checkitsalright.nz website for information on permits and fire rules in your area. Apply to Fire and Emergency for a burning permit, even if the burning complies with the Environment Canterbury Air Plan measures still check the fire season status and whether a permit is required. The Volkswagen Amarok has been a benchmark ute for style as well as a utility since its inception. At the time, people wondered if a German car maker could fully grasp the ethos of the farmers’ and tradies’ working machine as we use it here in the Antipodes. Nevertheless, the makers of the ‘people’s car’ grabbed the concept with both hands, delivering a vehicle with presence as well as practicality. Now the original four-cylinder engine under that sculpted hood has been swapped out in a transplant operation of epic proportions. Welcome, then, to the 2019 Amarok V6, boasting 268 horsepower, 580 Newton-metres of torque and the ability to deliver all of it to exactly where it’s needed thanks to VW’s tried and tested 4Motion all-wheeldrive system, complete with self-locking points in the drivetrain to deliver almost supernatural grip. With a ladder chassis, that big engine, huge load capacity and towing capability, you could be mistaken for thinking that Volkswagen has stripped the Amarok down to pure muscle, perhaps eschewing some of the comforts, which made it the ute of choice for those who wanted a bit of luxury with their utility. In fact, they’ve worked hard to make the Amarok v6 an even smoother ride. A prime piece of this puzzle is Check out the new Sportsman 470 Range TODAY!

the servotronic power steering system, which assesses the speed at which the Amarok is travelling and adjusts itself accordingly, for fingertip parking moves and responsive, crisp handling on the open highway. Between this innovation, a wellsorted suspension set-up and the responsiveness of that turbo-diesel six — with a perfect little boost of power coming right at overtaking speeds — the

Amarok’s six-pack has been compared not just to other leading utes on the market, but to VW’s own Golf GTI — at least when it comes to handling. There’s no way the venerable supermini could ever lug as much over the kind of terrain the Amarok dispenses of with ease. This ute bridges the gap between practical tool and driving pleasure to make a hard day’s work that little bit easier. ¢
