Records fall at athletics meeting

A number of club records and personal bests were set by Selwyn Athletics Club members …

The Arthur’s Pass Wildlife Trust (APWT) was named the recipient of the conservation board’s Biodiversity Award for its Predator Free Arthur’s Pass initiative, which aims to rid the area of introduced predators to enable the native wildlife to flourish and increase in numbers.

With only around 30 people living permanently in Arthur’s Pass village, that hasn’t stopped the trust from taking action to eliminate the stoats which threaten local kea and great spotted kiwi. Along with a trophy and certificate for the Conservation Board award, APWT

also received a $2,000 grant from the Isaac Wildlife Trust. APWT chairman, Peter Neale, said they already have some ideas on how the grant might be spent.

The Selwyn District Council has installed two new toilet blocks at Coe’s Ford to provide improved facilities for people visiting the popular spot. There are now three blocks to service the camping area, and extra cleaning and servicing of the toilets is also planned this summer at Coe’s and Chamberlain’s Fords, which have become more popular as camping spots. “Coe’s Ford and Chamberlain’s Ford are popular camping spots and are used both by local residents and visitors to our district,” Council’s Parks and Land Manager Cameron Warr said. “By installing extra toilet and recycling facilities at key locations in our district,

we hope to meet the needs of locals and tourists who use these services, and prevent problems from occurring elsewhere in Selwyn,” he said. A new toilet block will also be installed this summer at McHughs Forest Park near Darfield, a popular walking spot for local residents and visitors. A number of other improvements are planned as part of a development plan for the park. Council recently published a new guide to camping spots in Selwyn, covering their locations, services and which sites are free to use. Copies of the guide are available from council service centres and libraries and online at sensationalselwyn.co.nz. ¢

All but one of Selwyn’s community swimming pools will be open this summer following a council assessment of the district’s pools.

p Members of APWT meet with Robin Judkins for the handover of the Alpine Bird Sanctuary traps. From left: Jamin Barkley, Robin Judkins, Graeme Kates, Chris Stewart and Peter Neale

“We’d like to get some kea-proof traps,” Mr Neale said. “There’s a new design based on DOC 150/200 traps but with a stainless steel plate at the end instead of mesh.” APWT formed in 2010, after a 2008 study of the great spotted kiwi confirmed the benefits of extensive trapping where kiwi were nesting. “Eggs left in the burrow to hatch were surviving,” Mr Neale said. This was in contrast to most kiwi recovery work around New Zealand, where eggs were taken to be hatched artificially and the chicks raised in captivity until they were a year old and able to defend themselves against stoats. The first traplines were set up around Arthur’s Pass village around 2003 as a private initiative by Graeme Kates after he became concerned about the decline in native bird numbers in the village. In the early days he caught a lot of stoats, the arch enemy of juvenile kiwi. The trust now has around 800 traps in total, with most traplines checked by volunteers. Mr Neale says stoat catches have decreased noticeably over recent years.

“I’ve only caught one stoat in about three months,” he said. Robin Judkins (of Coast to Coast fame) has, through the Arthur’s Pass Alpine Bird Sanctuary Trust that he founded, given his traplines to APWT to manage, and pays contractors to check them. It has more than doubled the number of lines for the group. APWT often works alongside the Kea Conservation Trust which is also heavily involved in the Arthur’s Pass area. Some of the grant money may go towards a new sign planned by both groups to be erected at the DOC day shelter and campground, urging the town’s many tourists not to feed kea. Nr Neale said it’s fitting that the kiwi and kea conservation groups should work closely together. “Kea often nest close to a kiwi nest so they also benefit from our trapping.” Mr Neale would like to get Arthur’s Pass bach-holders more involved in the trapping, and he is also keen to encourage the next generation of conservationists. ¢

THE RECORD

Season’s greetings

Merry Christmas u by Sam Broughton, Selwyn Mayor

u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

It is hard to believe that we are now into December, and Christmas is fast approaching. It has been a busy year for me in parliament, working on a variety of legislation, with a particular focus on measures to tackle family violence, in my role as Minister of Justice. It has also been a busy year here in the Selwyn electorate. I have held coffee meetings around the district, and will be holding more of these next year to give you the opportunity to come and meet me in a location convenient to you. Some of the local highlights of the year for me included the local A&P shows, celebrating Rolleston’s 150th anniversary and opening the new West Melton Village shopping centre. 2017 is

set to be another exciting year in Selwyn, with Rolleston College and Lemonwood Grove School opening their doors to students. We will also be able to see the next stage of the Southern Motorway beginning to take shape as work continues on this important project. I would like to wish all of the readers of The Record a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. I hope that you have the opportunity to take a break and spend time doing what you love, whether that is relaxing with family and friends at the beach, reading a good book or getting out for a tramp in the bush.

QUALITY CARE AND EDUCATION FROM 3 MONTHS TO 6 YEARS • 20 Free hours for all three to six year olds • An experienced, committed team with a strong knowledge of Te Whāriki, the Early Childhood Curriculum • Our programme is influenced by a Reggio Amelia approach • An extensive outdoor environment with space to ride bikes and explore nature Our new nursery is due for completion in early 2017. In designing our nursery, we have given careful consideration to features that will encourage children’s social, creative, physical, and emotional development. Taking Enrollments now.

New extended opening hours, Monday to Friday 7.00am-6.00pm.

Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to gather together with family and friends we love.

It’s a time when life often slows a little and we are able to take stock of the year that has been and look forward to the things to come. For some of us this Christmas, we welcome new members into our family through birth or marriage. For others of us, Christmas will be tinged with sadness as we remember those who have been lost to us this year. Whatever your plans, make sure you remember

to cherish those who are gathered with you, to smile and say hello to strangers, to take opportunities to heal past hurts, and to sing a few carols and remember the reason for Christmas. My wife Liz and I will be enjoying Christmas in Tauranga this year with her family. I trust whatever your plans are that you travel safely, that you find peace in the mayhem, and you have a wonderful feed. ¢

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

With thanks Last night the community of Skevingtons Road came together to have a potluck dinner and have a ‘power party’ to celebrate our electricity being restored on Friday night. At the dinner this box from your community was there for people to take items they needed and was hugely appreciated by all. We are 7km north of Kaikoura and are a road of lifestyle blocks. We are a friendly and supportive community and this earthquake has really reinforced how important friends, family and knowing your neighbours truly is. Could you please pass on our thanks and love to the people of your community who were involved in this lovely gesture of kindness and support. It meant a lot to us. Thank you again, Jackie Wadsworth Skevingtons Road Kaikoura

THE RECORD  December 21 - 2016

People making a difference With 2016 drawing to a close, The Record looks back at the people and events which made the headlines this year. Many people throughout the

district made Selwyn a great place to live, whether it be by deed or inspiration, and we pay tribute to some of those who made a difference in 2016. ¢

p President: Selwyn Gorge farmer Warrick James, pictured here with his children, Duncan and Phoebe, was elected president of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association for 2016. Mr James, a former Malvern A&P Association president, said it was an honour to be named Canterbury president. Mr James and his wife CeCe breed Limousin cattle and Perendale sheep on their Selwyn Gorge farm

p Inspiration: Eight-year-old Winnie Taylor of West Melton became the face of her mother Kylie’s push to establish a respite care facility for children on their Halkett Road lifestyle block. Kylie said Winnie, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, always showed a close connection with animals and, with her own love of horses, she set up Sunnyvue Lodge Respite Care for children, with a focus on the children connecting with an ever-growing menagerie of animals, from horses to chickens and goats

p Mayoral: Darfield’s Sam Broughton became Selwyn’s youngest mayor when he was elected to the position in October’s local body elections. Pictured here with the two previous mayors, Michael McEvedy, left, and Kelvin Coe, right. Mr Broughton said his first reaction to getting the news that he had been voted mayor at his second attempt, was one of relief but also excitement, which was followed by the reality of the responsibilities and challenges of the job sinking in

events on the social calendar in 2016 were the Rolleston 150th celebrations and the annual Hororata Highland Games, which goes from strength to strength. The Record puts a spotlight on those two successful events. ¢

Keeping safe on the roads u by Kent Caddick

The Selwyn District Council is urging locals to play it safe on the roads over the holiday period with extra pressure being put on some South Island roads following last month’s Kaikoura earthquake. Traffic volumes increase significantly over the summer break, and with State Highway 1 north through Kaikoura out of action, pressure is being put on other northern routes. “Currently many key South Island routes are affected by roadworks, and drivers will need to allow for delays and reduce their speed at these locations in line with temporary speed signs,” Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning said. “Other roads will busier than usual, as a result of holiday traffic and the closure of the main coastal route between Christchurch and Picton. “Driving slower not only looks after the road surface but also reduces the chance of losing control or causing damage to your car or to others,” she said. Mrs Tinning said people need to allow extra time for their journey as the roads are expected to be busy and a number of cars will be towing

trailers, caravans or boats. “If you are towing a trailer, your maximum speed limit on the open road is 90. Keep left and pull over, when it is safe to let other vehicles pass.” She said on long trips, including regular rest breaks from driving every couple of hours is also a good idea. “When travelling long distances, getting plenty of sleep before your journey and driving at times of the day when you are normally awake helps reduce the chances of being involved in an accident,” Mrs Tinning said. To check road conditions before you travel visit nzta.govt.nz or call NZTA on 0800 44 44 49. Mrs Tinning said a national ‘Check your speed’ campaign began in December, with a focus on ensuring drivers stay within speed limits. “Billboards reminding motorists of these messages will be installed in Selwyn and nationally as part of this campaign.”

Lifestyle Blocks

Master of mulching u by Andy Bryenton

Lifestyle blocks can be rewarding and picturesque — after all the hard work of clearing scrub and taming invasive undergrowth is done, of course. Breaking in new ground on this kind of scale may be too small a task to warrant a massive tractor slasher or bobcat, but it’s too much for the average mower. That’s where Kiwi company Masport have found a brand new niche for a new breed of ride-on machine — a beefedup, hard-core cousin to the average lawn tractor which they call the Crossjet. A cross breed of conventional mower and the kind of big slasher deployed by farmers to make new pasture from rugged regrowth, the Crossjet chews through its meal of blackberry, kikuyu

and reeds with an insatiable appetite, shredding it all down with a pair of flail blades driven by a high-capacity V-twin engine. In a practical test, clearing half an acre neglected for over three years, the Crossjet was undaunted by growth up to waist height. The two-wheel-drive version — perfect for level ground — uses its weight and a set of tube steel

p From the initial heavy cut to precision lawn care, the Crossjet handles it all

nudge bars to crush even the gnarliest growth under, where a seriously heavyduty cutting deck takes matters in hand. Even small wattle saplings, immature gorse and other pithy fare came out the other side as finger-length mulch, without the engine missing a beat. Lining up on some serious overgrowth — head high in some places and laced with blackberry canes — the Crossjet plowed right in, and with some artful use of the machine’s small turning circle and hand-operated forward and reverse throttle, the lot was soon razed flat.

In fact, it was never necessary to engage the optional diff lock to get out of tight spots — an option that’s there if the green stuff really gets stroppy. About the only criticism one could level at this machine is that the throttle control — which must be constantly operated by your right hand — needs a firm grip, and perhaps a glove if you’re in the saddle for extended periods of time. Even after a solid hour of chopping, it had only depleted half a tank of gas, too. For just a little more than the average ride-on — and less than a commercial zero-turn — it’s the perfect companion for lifestyle block owners with big ground to cover. ¢

The taste of Napoli in New Zealand u by Andy Bryenton

It’s an often recounted fact that pizza may not be Italian at all — though that doesn’t stop us from enjoying it here in New Zealand. In fact, the flat, cheesy delight may have been invented by Roman soldiers in Jerusalem, who added cheese, onions and olives to the local matzah bread. What we do know for sure is that preparing pizza outdoors in a wood fired oven has become the big trend for summer entertaining. Smoky, hot, fresh and delicious, wood fired pizza trumps the traditional bangers on the barbie in the cuisine stakes, and is ultimately versatile. Recipes abound for exotic delights like seared manuka smoked salmon, caper and red onion pizza, angus beef and capsicum, or even dessert varieties. If that’s got your mouth watering, the next stage is to source a good quality means of preparing outdoor pizza. The secret is in using clay or bricks to create a surface which absorbs and then evenly radiates heat, ensuring a crispy base and strings of dripping mozzarella. Many companies will happily install one of their own proprietary designs in your backyard — just make sure the rest of your entertainment area is up to the standard, as you can expect plenty of guests ready to taste test the results.

However, if the cost of a professional install seems prohibitive, there are two popular options to choose from which still guarantee plenty of pizza for all. The first is to look into the capabilities of your existing BBQ — with some additions. Many homeowners already won amazing and complex grills, with wok burners, rotisseries and hoods. Rather than hide away what used to be the patio centrepiece, equip it with a stonelined pizza cooker from your local BBQ or hardware supplier. These do all the

work of a full-sized wood fired oven, though they lack the rustic look. The final alternative is to roll up your sleeves and simply build a pizza oven. After all, the peasants of Napoli managed it back in the 1700s. With a bit of skill and a lot of bricks you could have an entertaining masterpiece the envy of the whole neighbourhood.

Build and renovate

Battery power brings solar to life u by Andy Bryenton

Solar power has been touted since the 1960s — and in some cases even earlier — as the future of sustainable energy. But the large-scale corporate or government installations of those early forward-thinkers have never come to pass. Instead, solar has gone micro, with the help of modern battery technology. A good analogy is with the electric car. Ask most people when the first of these vehicles first hit the road, and they’ll likely point to GM’s ill-fated EV1, or the more modern Tesla roadster. In fact, the electric car was out there at the same time as Ford’s Model T, and was seen as a luxury alternative to the sooty, smelly, loud early internal combustion engine. The problem? Its batteries, which limited range and ultimately doomed the concept. It’s been the same with harvesting solar energy for the home. Until very recently, deep cycle leadacid batteries have been the array of choice for the ‘off the grid’ homeowner. It’s either that or send the power generated during peak time — the middle of the day — back into the grid for a very miserly return. Of course, the grim mathematics of day and night are to blame — we use more power when it’s cold and dark outside, and our normal daytime work-day means that showers, entertainment, cooking and heating are usually evening and early morning affairs.

Lead-acid batteries have been supplanted by lithium-ion technology in recent years, however, meaning that the weak link in the solar chain — storage — is now on a par with efficient modern panels and control systems. Driven, ironically, by the smart phone and electric auto industries, this new

battery technology keeps getting more capacious and smaller. We’ve reached the tipping point where wholly self-contained solar may be just the way to go for new builds or major renovations, where long-term occupancy is planned to offset the initial capital outlay. ¢
