p Michelle Attwood and her husky Sam are looking forward to the move to West Melton.

The dog rescue organisation has leased a 10 acre block with house on the outskirts the Selwyn township to initially home up to 10 rescued Husky dogs. Husky Rescue NZ was the brainchild of Christchurch woman Michelle Attwood who has been running the centre from her small Hei Hei property for over five years. “We have been looking for somewhere larger for the dogs for around a year now and we were fortunate to come across this beautiful property in West Melton,” Michelle said. “Huskies are a fiercely

independent breed of dogs. They are the seventh closest breed to wolves and as such need a huge amount of exercise. “So to find a property of this size is just ideal as it means we can exercise the dogs from our doorstep rather than having to drive all over the place to get them their exercise.” Michelle started Husky Rescue NZ after noticing a growing number of people looking to sell or give away their dogs on places like the TradeMe. “What some people didn’t realise is that these dogs are a lot of work in terms of exercise and also in providing

secure housing for them. “They are very independent and can survive without human contact. Many people expect to have the dog follow them around and come when they are called but Huskies have minds of their own.” Michelle has been personally funding Husky Rescue NZ for the last five years, costing her around $24,000 a year, but the organisation is now in the process of becoming a registered charity which should help with donations and sponsorship. continued on page 4 …

Penguins walk the walk

Blessing for new school

u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Think of penguins and you may think of the movie Happy Feet with the flightless birds dancing on the ice at Antarctica, but one group of Rolleston penguins demonstrated they have feet of another kind which they put to good use.

A site blessing and turf cutting ceremony marked the official beginning of West Rolleston Primary School which will open to Year 1 to 4 students in 2016.

p The Rolleston St John Penguins. Back row from left: Leah Munro, Judith Hoban, and Loretta Adams

The Rolleston St John Penguins, aged between six and eight years old, recently got their feet moving to do a walk-athon to raise money for the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital. The Penguins had learnt about the work of the eye hospital, which provides expert eye care in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, where the rate of blindness is 10 times higher than in the West. “The children learnt about how people were helped to see again with surgery and other methods,” Rolleston Penguins’ leader Leah Munro said. “We were also in contact with the

eye hospital via Facebook,” she said. Together with fellow leader Loretta Adams they decided to do something to raise funds for the hospital. “The children were very excited to know that something little they can do can go a very long way in helping others,” she said. In fancy dress the Penguins marched around the Rolleston Community Centre, their happy feet raising a total of $679.50. Judith Hoban who is Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St John visited the Penguins after the walk-athon and accepted the donation for the eye hospital. ¢

Growing our economy through trade

… continued from front page

New home for rescued huskies

u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

To grow our economy so we can improve our standard of living, we need access to overseas markets. R e c e n t l y, the Government has taken another positive step towards achieving this goal by completing free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with Korea. There are 50 million people in Korea and it is currently the sixth-largest export destination for Kiwi goods and services. At the moment, our exporters pay $229 million a year in duties to get their products into the Korean market. Under this FTA, they stand to save $65 million in the first year alone. Initially, tariffs will be eliminated on 48 per cent of current New Zealand exports. Within 15 years, most tariffs will be gone completely. The value of this deal is illustrated by our dairy industry. New Zealand dairy products are sought after in Korea — it is the fourth-largest market for our cheese. However, our exporters paid around $89 million in duties on the $220 million worth of dairy products we sent there in the past year.

This deal will make New Zealand products more competitive with goods from places like the United States, Chile, and the European Union, which already have an FTA with Korea. When businesses earn more, they can expand and can afford to hire more staff at higher rates. Building our trade and business links is part of the Government’s plan to create more jobs and boost incomes. This FTA will also give Kiwis better access to Korean goods, such as motor homes, transport vehicles, heavy machinery, and home appliances. Korea is the eighth-largest import source of goods and services in New Zealand. We import about as much product from Korea as we export — a win-win situation. With a strong history of working together, this free trade agreement will take New Zealand’s relationship with Korea into the future.

p Rehabilitating rescued huskies through sled dog work is an important part of Michelle Attwood’s programme. Here Michelle races a team of rescue huskies along with her partner’s black lab Scout who has been raised with huskies and loves sledding as much as the huskies do.

“In moving to the new property we will be deer fencing at least an acre of the land to allow the dogs to roam free on a permanent basis, as well as giving us the space to sled run them. “Currently we have 11 dogs on our books, with five of them living with us on our 800sqm property in Hei Hei and six others in foster care around New Zealand.” Michelle said once they are established in West Melton all the dogs will return and they are in the processing of receiving permission for the operation from the Selwyn District Council.

“Once that is in place and we are a registered charity we will be looking to take more dogs in but a lot will depend on what we are able to secure in the way of donations and sponsorship.” At the moment Husky Rescue NZ is looking for sponsors who can assist them with the deer fencing they require for the West Melton property and farm style dog kennels with runs. • Large diameter wells up to 1.2 diameter for efficient shallow wells • Galleries also installed with excavators up to 35 ton available

Well Development: We pride ourselves in leaving your well correctly screened and developed to its full potential with quality stainless steel wedge wire screens of the correct diameter and aperture size. Correct and full development has a positive impact on pump selection, protects your pump investment, and maximises the overall long-term economics of the well and pump installation. Each well is unique and requires a different approach, something that we can discuss with you to reach a suitable and economic solution. Texco use primarily mechanical and air development methods depending on what is required in each situation.

Inspection, rehabilitation and repair of existing wells: With our comprehensive range of equipment and high resolution Down Hole Video Camera we can inspect and recommend further action on your existing well or indeed recognise if it has reached the end of its economic life. We can then discuss a solution with you for each case. Well repair system: We also have a well repair system available to give you a viable option to fix a broken or non-complying well, rather than drilling a new one. Test Pumping: This can be undertaken with measurements taken by Orifice Weir, V Notch Weir or electronic flow meter with data loggers and down hole measuring done by electronic pressure transducers. We have our own diesel generator if power is not available on site.

Bid to lift noise level fails

u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

West Melton’s Laura Wong has been amazed by the generosity of people from her town who have responded to her call to help children in need this Christmas.

A developer’s hope to lift noise restrictions at Rolleston’s industrial area has stumbled at its first hurdle. The Selwyn District Council has decided not to include noise modifications in its Land Use Recovery Plan (LURP) which will go to Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee this month. Tim Carter of Rolleston Industrial Development at Rolleston’s Izone lobbied council to have changes to noise level allowances included in the LURP action so he could fast track changes and have them included in the LURP’s public consultation process. Mr Carter said noise level restrictions were set at a very low level at night, and rightly so, but he wanted a change to where those noise level readings were taken from. “Where the noise levels are assessed is not actually at the houses, its assessed at the rural boundary. The rule that we’re proposing is to restrict the

noise based on where the notional boundaries of the dwellings are,” Mr Carter said. Mr Carter said the Tauranga Port Company based in the Izone had successfully gone through a resource management act process of changing their noise restriction allowances and the Lyttleton Port Company would follow the same process. He asked for all industrial land that borders Rolleston’s greenfield land to be included at this time, but said he would eventually like to see a plan change resulting in noise level restrictions eased throughout the entire Izone. Council is to seek advice on how changes to noise restrictions can be made to future district plans. “It’s opening a can of worms with wider implications. It’s something we need to give far more consideration to,” Councillor Mark Alexander said.

p Laura Wong with some of the presents donated by West Melton residents

Ms Wong, who works as at ANZ bank’s Riccarton branch said she felt challenged to do something for disadvantaged children after community group Round Table Christchurch put a wooden Christmas tree at her branch. The group had decorated the tree with cards which had the gender and age of a child which the Christchurch City Mission had identified as someone who might go without this Christmas. Ms Wong decided to let the people of West Melton know about the giving tree and put a message on the town’s community Facebook page.

“I wanted to see what our community could do,” Ms Wong said. “I wasn’t expecting such a big response. Within half an hour I had 10 or 11 people saying they wanted to give a present and could I drop a card to them.” Ms Wong is now busy picking up presents from her community to go under the Christmas tree. She said she had around 30 so far. “I’m really amazed by the support. I think at Christmas we have to remember there are lots of children who will go without.” ¢

New park to host fun day u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Prebbleton’s new park will play host to a community fun day this weekend.

p K9000 owner Jacqui Rosewall and Barkley try out the dog wash

The K9000 Dogwash is the first of its kind in Selwyn and has been set up by Rolleston operator Jacqui Rosewall who leases the space from the Selwyn District Council. Miss Rosewall said the machine usually takes about 10 minutes to give a dog the full treatment from shampoo to blow dry. “There are a huge number of dogs in Selwyn and a lot of people will be bringing them to the dog park anyway, so it makes

sense to clean them here. “Any sized dog can be washed. There is also a clip you can tether the animal to before they get washed,” she said. Selwyn has around 12,000 registered dogs and more than 70 new dogs are registered in the district each month. The self-service wash machine is permanently based at the dog park, and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

p Prebbleton’s new community park will host a family fun day

The Prebbleton Community Park was opened to the public in July after construction and landscaping were complete, and the family fun day event will feature live local music, a bouncy castle, children’s games, a free sausage sizzle, mini-Skate Jam and a number of spot prizes. Selwyn District Council’s youth advisor Chris Martin said it will be a great opportunity for families from Prebbleton to enjoy the summer sun and celebrate the new shared space they have. “There will be an afternoon packed full of fun activities in the new park so whether it’s kids rolling

around on scooters and playing on the colourful playground, or families sharing a picnic in the sun on the benches, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.” He said the park has a range of areas to suit all age groups including a colourful playground with swings, a large train and a 7.5 metre climbing net. There is also a skate and scooter area, a covered area, picnic tables and a walking and cycling track. The fun day will be held from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, December 6 at the Prebbleton Community Park off Stationmasters Way. ¢

Art focus on Selwyn landscape

u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Snowy peaks and river valleys were on display at Clearview Primary School’s first art exhibition at the school hall last week. Young artists from Years 4 to 8 were chosen to be part of an art enrichment group lead by teachers Vicky Peacock and Tracey Young. The group visited Ms Peacock’s art gallery and property at Springfield and took photographs and made sketches of the Torlesse mountain range and Waimakariri River. “The students came back and spent two more days putting their compositions together,” Ms Young said. Twelve-year-old Olivia Duder’s work focussed on the majestic Torlesse range. Olivia said she was taught to paint the sky first, followed by the mountains and hills before finishing with the foreground. “The mountains were the most difficult. We learnt how to mix greys, blacks and whites,” Olivia said.

Jackson Cunneen (13) chose to paint the Waimakariri River. He decided to do a tonal painting, using various shades of black, grey and white, with a contrasting red tree in the foreground. “I wanted the tree to be the main focus. It’s something a bit different,” Jackson said. Charlotte Ward (11) invented her own composition taking a view of the Torlesse range and combining it with a scene from the Waimakariri River. “I mixed them up and put them together,” Charlotte said. “The rocks were really difficult to paint. There was lots of detail and they were different sizes and they had shadows.” Charlotte said she loved painting the water and was given special paint to use. ¢

When is a panic attack not a panic attack? The answer is when it is an overactive fight or flight response.

All over Christchurch and around the world people are ‘having panic attacks’ which are severely disrupting and limiting their lives. In some cases they end up trying to manage and control the feelings they are experiencing to the point where they no longer work, they don’t go out, and they don’t see anyone. They may well have become agoraphobic — too afraid to leave their house.

After an event like a major earthquake, this response (which is completely appropriate in a life threatening situation), can become triggered by any rumble in anyone. Typically though, this all began in their late teens. At some point, during a stressful situation, or even for no particular reason, their wonderful protection mechanism was set off. Adrenalin coursed through their veins, their heart and breathing rates increased in order to supply vital oxygen to the muscles, ready for action. Their stomach may have rid itself of anything which it might have been digesting, they were in a high state of arousal — ready to fight, or flee the threat to life. This can be a very frightening feeling. The first time it happens many people fear they are having a heart attack.

If they experience it again and again, the unpredictability and attempts to rationalise what is going on can become torturous. They begin to do anything to try and avoid it. The term ‘panic attack’ is one that I am both annoyed and disappointed by. This label does nothing but create an unhelpful frame for the person which in itself predisposes a negative response. It is possible to be experiencing a fight or flight response and remain calm (in fact most people do remain outwardly calm during subsequent episodes, which isn’t to say they enjoy the feelings). And it is possible to recognise it for what it is, and not feel under ‘attack’. Accepting this response as an overactive reaction allows you to begin the process of reducing its hold over you. ¢

Planting to beat pollution

u by Kent Caddick

Selwyn farmers Roger and Francie Taylor are doing their bit to clean up the district’s waterways. The Coalgate couple are planting trees along a polluted stream running through their property at Coalgate, upstream of the Selwyn River and Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. Since the Taylors settled at Glendore Farm seven years ago, water quality has abruptly declined as much of the farm’s 600-hectares was converted from sheep and beef to intensive dairying. Happy Jack Creek, which runs through the property and into the Selwyn River near Hororata, was once where their grandchildren swam until it filled with sediment. Black beech, totara, ribbonwood, kowhai and kahikatea now grace the banks of Happy Jack Creek together with shrubby species grown by Southern Woods Tree Nursery from seeds and cuttings collected in the area. Newer plantings along a tributary and a hillside spring include native pittosporum, toe toe, flax, carex and coprosma. Mr Taylor said close to 100 per cent of trees have survived since he started using protective guards with built-in woollen mulch pads to exclude pests and herbicide spray while holding moisture.

“Fencing sure took away the worry about stock getting stuck in waterways,” he said. “And we’re enjoying an increase in native skinks, weta and birds including kingfishers and bellbirds.” The Honda TreeFund this year contributed $4,000 towards planting and fencing native trees, shrubs and

grasses at Glendore. Environment Canterbury also awarded the Taylors $2,000 from its Canterbury Biodiversity fund in 2012 and Selwyn District Council has contributed around $6,000 from its Natural Environment Fund over the last four years. ¢

Cardio is good but resistance is great u by Karen Hulston

Many people jog, walk or cycle which is good, but if you add resistance training to your exercise regime you will speed up your metabolism, improve strength and decrease body fat. Resistance training increases the amount of calories you burn even while sitting on the couch. This is because after each strength workout your

muscles need energy to repair their muscle fibres. This also raises your metabolism for 24 to 48 hours after your work out.

Doing a circuit of eight exercises for eight minutes in total, can expend approximately 160 – 230 calories. This is equivalent to what you would burn if you ran a 16km per hour pace for the same duration. During a study on dieters (who lost weight) but didn’t do resistance training — on average they experienced a 75% weight loss from fat and the other 25% loss was from muscle. Muscle loss will drop your scale weight but it doesn’t improve your body composition, making it more likely to gain back the flab you previously lost. If you eat healthily and do an adequate resistance training programme you will protect your hard earned muscle and will burn 100% body fat. Resistance training becomes pertinent as you get older, an average person above the age of 30 years will lose up to 5% of their body’s total muscle each decade. Worst yet, it is commonly replaced with body fat which will increase your waistline as one pound of fat takes

up 18% more space than muscle. The best thing is unlike wrinkles you can reverse these signs of ageing (without an expensive operation) by simply conducting resistance training. Not only will you have stronger muscles, ligaments and tendons, but resistance training can reduce the odds of injuries and back pain whilst improving blood pressure and increasing bone density. Moreover, various studies have proved that you will have a healthier heart and lungs, be less stressed, more productive, feel happier and live longer. With the many benefits associated with resistance training it is overwhelming why more people don’t do it. I believe this is due to a lack of knowledge and the misconception that dieting and/or cardio training is enough. Unfortunately, there are a lot of females who still believe that if they do resistance training it will cause them to gain huge muscles similar to a body builder. This is a myth. To attain a body builder’s physique it requires extremely heavy lifting and supplementation to enhance growth hormones. If I have managed to convince you to start resistance training then never forget that muscle weighs more than fat so if you continue to eat as normal, initially your weight may not drop but your clothes will start to feel loose and you will start to see a more toned reflection in the mirror. The key to being slim, strong and fit is quite simple — eat healthily and conduct a balanced cardio and resistance training programme at least three to four times a week. Happy lifting and remember to seek medical advice before beginning an exercise regime and/or ask for guidance from an exercise professional. ¢

A passion for local produce which is healthy, fresh and delivered direct to the door has led one Rolleston mum to start her own online produce store. Keryn Pascoe started Lucy’s Online Growers Market in 2011 as a part time venture as a change of career after the birth of her second child. Previously she had led a high flying life, working in an advertising agency in Auckland. Keryn and husband Grant decided to move to Selwyn to be closer to family and to have a change of lifestyle while raising their two young boys. “I had lots of ideas for things I wanted to do,” Keryn said. “I came up with the idea of the online grower’s market because I liked visiting the markets but found it hard to get there on a Saturday morning. “I thought, if I’m having this kind of trouble, there must be others too. I wanted to bring them whole, natural, artisan food.” Being married to a graphic designer had its advantages with Grant designing the business website and doing photography and brochures. The business started off small with just a few family members and friends but soon grew with word of mouth. Now Keryn is packing in a 40-hour week, processing orders and delivering to

customers in West Melton, Rolleston, Broadfields and Halswell. Where possible Keryn supplies produce that is fresh and from local growers, including pork from Cressy Farm in Greendale, salads from Broadfields and locally grown tomatoes. Keryn loves learning more about where food comes from and says you can’t beat a fresh apple that’s been picked straight from the tree. “When apples are put in the cold store, like some of the supermarket apples, they lose their smell. p Keryn Pascoe is passionate about fresh food “When I go and pick up a crate of apples from the grower they “I don’t think there’s a perfect diet. really smell like apples.” It’s all about eating real and eating Keryn says in general there’s a what’s in season.” growing trend worldwide of people She enjoys meeting people in her wanting to connect more with their food job that feel the same way as she does and eat produce that is natural and about food and nutrition. fresh. Not Christmas without a tree Christmas is not complete without a Christmas tree but putting up a tree is a rather young tradition. Early records can be found in the 15th and 16th century in Northern Germany specifically in Estonia and northern Latvia where members of the brotherhood of the Blackheads put up a tree in their brotherhood house. On the last night of the celebrations they took it to the town square, danced around it and then burnt the tree. Later, they decorated a smaller tree with nuts, fruits, and other ornaments. In 1781, in the Province of Quebec in Canada General Friedrich Adolf Riedesel with his wife held a party and decorated a fir tree with candles. The sight of a decorated tree delighted their guests and soon the tradition spread to Russia, Britain, and other parts of the world. The date of setting up the Christmas tree differs from country to country. In New Zealand, it is usually put up in the second week of December.

In the United Kingdom Christmas trees are displayed in shops and stores as early as the last week of August, while in the United States Christmas trees are usually set up after they celebrate Thanksgiving. Xmas trees usually stay until January 6 or 7 or just after the Epiphany, a Christian celebration when Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s son. There are many types of Christmas tree decorations such as angels, bells, garlands, tinsels, pine cones, ribbons and of course lights. A star or an angel usually tops the tree. The star on top represents the star of Bethlehem and the Angel for the host of angels that appeared among the shepherds to announce the birth of Jesus. ¢

Kate’s Kitchen: Fresh from the garden to the plate u by Kate Brunner

Springtime in the garden is a joy.

When I come home from work I head straight for the vegetable patch, ignoring the grass that requires cutting, the weeds waving to me as they attempt to overcome the cultivated bits in the garden and the greenhouse that has yet to be reassembled in its new position. Today I smiled as I noted the redcurrants just starting to colour then my heart sank as I remembered the tedious picking of those tiny berries and the race to possess them before the birds do. The rhubarb has great fat

stalks that I shall pick this weekend and turn into spiced rhubarb chutney. Then it was onto the recycled fire guard with the tendrils of sugar snap peas winding their way upwards with the first of the little pods hiding amongst the leaves. Those little pods of crunchiness and sweetness are being incorporated into a crunchy noodle salad — just the thing to take to a barbecue, shared meal or something to take to work for lunch or dip into when hungry. ¢

Ingredients: 1 packet of thin spaghetti noodles 1 good handful or two of sugar snap peas 1 cup of vegetable oil ¼ cup rice wine vinegar 1/3 cup of light soy sauce 3 tablespoons of sesame oil 1 tablespoon of honey 2 cloves of garlic, minced 1 teaspoon of grated ginger 3 tablespoons of toasted sesame seeds ½ cup smooth peanut butter 2 red peppers 4 spring onions Parsley Method: In the kitchen whiz place the oil,

rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, garlic, ginger and peanut butter, and process until smooth. Bring a pot of water to the boil and cook the sugar snap peas for a minute then plunge into cold water to stop them cooking. Drain. Cut the red peppers into smallish chunks and slice the spring onions on the diagonal. Cook the noodles and drain. Place in a bowl with the peppers and spring onions and some of the dressing and mix. I never put in all the dressing — just enough to coat and flavour but do this to your own preference. Place all on a platter and sprinkle with the sesame seeds and parsley.
