The 16-year-old was recently awarded the 2013 New Zealand Young Plant Conservationist Award in Wellington by the NZ Plant Conservationist Network in recognition for his devotion to restoring the ecosystems once found in this area. “People were there from around the country. It was really great to be with like-minded, knowledgeable people,” Tim said. Following a family excursion to the West Coast Tim, a student at Darfield High School, asked his parents if
he could plant some of the ferns he had seen in the family garden. Knowing how different the environment is in West Melton his parents encouraged Tim to go seek advice about plants. “I’d liked the ferns on the West Coast, but the land in West Melton is so dry. I went to the Motukara Nursery run by DOC and they were able to tell me what would have been in West Melton before Maori,” he said. Tim came back from the nursery with a list of plant names, including Totara,
Matai, Kowhai, cabbage tree, tussocks and shrubs. His parents, who live on 10 acres, sectioned off a rough piece of land 50 by 45m2 for Tim to plant out in natives. “I’m a New Zealander, and I think New Zealand has very interesting flora and fauna. Majority of submitters in favour of Rolleston plans

Around three-quarters of the submitters to the Selwyn District Council’s masterplan for the development of Rolleston’s town centre are in favour of the proposal. Submission hearings into the plans to develop Rolleston Town Centre and Foster Recreation Park begin today at council headquarters in Rolleston. The draft Rolleston Town Centre Masterplan drew 212 submissions with 160 submissions received on the Draft Foster Recreation Park Masterplan. Council’s strategic policy planner Cameron Wood said submissions indicated there was a high level of public support for both plans, with 73% of submitters indicating they supported the overall concept for the Rolleston Town Centre and 96% of submitters supporting the direction of the Foster Park Masterplan. “There was strong support from submitters to the Town Centre Masterplan for the development of a new library, community and technology centre in Rolleston, with 78% of submitters in
favour of this concept,” Mr Wood said. “All of the other proposals in the masterplan, which include plans to enhance Rolleston Reserve, develop Tennyson Street as Rolleston’s Main Street, improve Rolleston Drive, extend Moore Street and develop Kidman Street as a commercial area, were also supported by the majority of submitters. “Suggestions for improvements to the plan include improvements to parking in the town centre, encouraging more cafes and restaurants to set up and changes to the proposed roading design.” Council’s open spaces and property asset manager Mark Rykers said submissions on the Foster Park plan indicated people particularly liked the idea of the park being used for a variety of uses like sports, walking, cycling, events and having a children’s play area.
Malvern community farewells ‘Frosty’ by Kent Caddick
The Malvern community will today farewell a former Malvern Community Board member who was tragically killed in an industrial accident at Lyttelton Port last week. Bill Frost, or Frosty as he was known to those close to him, died after being pinned between a logging truck trailer and a forklift. The 58-year-old from Coalgate served two terms on the Malvern Community Board before losing his seat at this year’s local body elections. Board chair Jenny Gallagher said his death was a real tragedy. “He was very supportive of me when I took on the role as chair and was extremely passionate about issues of roading, transport and safety.” “He was very involved in his local Coalgate community and was always willing to contribute to discussions around the board table.”
“Submitters also supported the idea of sports groups sharing spaces and facilities at the park.” Council is expected to adopt the masterplans for the Town Centre and Foster Recreation Park, with any changes made as a result of submissions, early in 2014.

We just have to do our best. “All the things I’m planting are pre European and pre Maori. I still haven’t planted any ferns. I might have to go for dry land ferns.” Tim has received advice, funding and physical assistance from Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust, an organisation established in 2006 to promote native plants on the Canterbury Plains. “Their goal is to vegetate the plains, from the mountains to the sea, creating native areas every five kilometres apart. This will attract animals and birds.” He is devoted to the concept of ecosourcing his plants, which involves getting seeds from the closest source possible.
“The advantages are that plants adapt well to live in those conditions because they are already used to the soil, the ph level, the mineral content and the weather. It makes them far superior.” Tim harvests seeds from his own plants to use back in his native area. He spends most days tending his plants and keeps a keen eye on their development and the arrival of insects and birds. “I’m more than happy to spend as many hours as it takes.” Having just completed Year 11 at Darfield High School he will continue to take subjects that he hopes will lead to a career in environmental restoration and conservation. He is currently voluntarily studying the effects of stock grazing on prostrate plants in the McLeans Island ecosystem which he hopes to publish upon completion.

Ms Adams met with the students at the Amazing Place Schools’ Competition Storybox exhibition in Rolleston recently. The students were entrants in the Amazing Place Christchurch City Playground competition, with Ms Adams said she was impressed by the students’ ideas and enthusiasm for the competition. “The Storybox exhibition was judged the supreme champion trade
exhibitor of the year at the recent 151st Canterbury A&P Show and the students and I had a great time looking through it. The interactive map showing the blueprint for the future city of Christchurch is definitely a highlight and very inspirational.” Ms Adams said she would recommend other local residents take the opportunity to visit the exhibition, which will be in Rolleston until December 5.

Poor parking will have to cross the road and use the driveway. Manoeuvring in the carpark will be debilitating as it is so restricted, plus in four of the carparks you hit the building if you drive to the wheel stop. Dear Sir I read with amusement about the parking at the Darfield Medical Centre. To make the claim that it meets the Council requirements is nothing short of farcical. There is no provision for pedestrians or wheelchairs both motorised and self-propelled. Turning left into or out of the driveway it is impossible not to run over the kerb and stay on your side of the road. As there is no footpath on that side of the road patients other than those in cars

Fire restrictions may be introduced in Selwyn this summer, depending on weather conditions. We are currently in an open fire season. If you need to burn debris from storm damage this is currently permitted in rural areas and now is a good time to do so before conditions become too dry and fire restrictions are imposed. If restrictions are imposed, burning of this material will not be allowed without a fire permit. Fire permits will only be issued in exceptional circumstances.

Adams confirmed as Selwyn candidate

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has been officially confirmed as the National Party candidate for the Selwyn electorate in next year’s general election.
Nearly 1300 people passed through the doors of the Darfield Recreation Centre to view the works on display at the recent Malvern Community Arts Council Artweek over the nine days of the exhibition.

Around 200 packed out the Recreation Centre on the opening night to hear the announcement of the award winners. Just over $20,000 worth of art, representing 57 artworks, was sold over the time of the exhibition, as well as a number of large works at the Selwyn Gallery and Darfield library exhibitions. “This provides a real boost to artists and the arts council itself,” MCAC chair Kirsty Peel said. “In addition to radio and newspaper advertising Artweek was advertised widely via 2000 postcards distributed
in Christchurch galleries, art supplies shops, cafes and homes as well as through our sponsors. It attracted many new people to our community to enjoy a day out.” Ms Peel said the success of Artweek enables the arts council to keep the Selwyn Gallery open all year and to support other initiatives such as artists in schools. “We would like to thank all our sponsors for their support and look forward to their ongoing support in 2014.”

Selwyn MP Amy Adams is encouraging all those who hope to attend the 100th anniversary of Anzac Day at Gallipoli in 2015 to enter the ballot which opened recently.
Selwyn farmers have the chance to be named the producer of New Zealand’s most tender and tasty lamb.

2015 is expected to exceed the site’s capacity, meaning a public ballot is required to fairly distribute New Zealand’s 2000 attendance passes. “I urge anyone wanting to go — including anyone who may be planning to head to Europe for their OE over that time — to enter the ballot, as only those with attendance passes will be admitted to the services on Anzac Day. “I’m pleased to see that 100 double passes have been set aside for descendants of Gallipoli veterans, and another 100 double passes allocated for other veterans.” Ms Adams said the ballot will be open until January 31, 2014, and will be randomly drawn — meaning there is no need to rush to apply. Successful applicants will be notified in April 2014 and receive their ticket and another pass for a guest of their choosing. Entries have opened for the 2014 Beef & Lamb New Zealand Golden Lamb Awards, aka ‘the Glammies’, and a judging process which combines scientific and taste testing will once again find the country’s top lamb. The competition will culminate with the Grand Final at the Upper Clutha A&P Show in March. Beef & Lamb New Zealand CEO, Dr Scott Champion, said the competition continued to draw a keen following from sheep farmers, passionate about the world’s best lamb that they produce.
“Each year this contest gets bigger and better and it’s a great way to profile farmers’ skill and expertise as well as reminding Kiwis just how special our lamb is.” The first stage of ‘the Glammies’ competition will see all entries put through testing at Carne Technologies to find the top 16 lamb legs. At the Grand Final taste test, a panel of judges will decide the 2014 Grand Champion. Farmers have until December 6 to enter the competition.

So that there is enough water to go around this summer, we are asking everyone to be careful about how they use water. Some areas like Rolleston also pay for their water based on metered use so reducing your water consumption will mean you spend less on water bills.
Tips for managing your water use You can help manage your water consumption wisely by following these tips: • Water your garden and lawn every few days rather than every day • Water your garden and lawn outside of peak water usage hours (avoid 6am–9am, and 4pm–9pm). Watering in the early morning (before 6am) or late evening (after 9pm) will minimise evaporation loss. Also avoid watering in a Nor’ West as the water will quickly evaporate • Using a watering can or hand watering plants by hose uses less water than a sprinkler • Use a timer to avoid overwatering

Following on the heels of the Canterbury A&P Show young country children, including students from West Melton and Hororata primary schools as well as Darfield High School, got to compete in their own livestock competition. The annual Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championship Day, sponsored by Selwyn company Synlait, gives outlying Canterbury primary school children an opportunity to show their animals in a similar way as they would in an agricultural and pastoral show.
Beef calves, dairy calves, lambs, goats and poultry were judged across three sections — care and attention, leading and handling, and project books. The event was organised by the Canterbury A&P Association and held at the Canterbury Agricultural Park last week.

New Zealand until a generation ago was a country in which the greater good was still a priority and the river was a commons, in which all parts of the community believed they had a stake and usually did. An example is that irrigation consents in the old Canterbury schemes were often granted for 10 years and could be withheld if water rights were abused. Today, it is not unusual to be granted a 30-year consent. Bigger farms and larger investments in equipment are the justification for this. But bigger scale puts farmers under a lot more pressure. When farmers are under pressure, so is the land and water. Our readers are from the Selwyn district. What are the main issues we need to be aware of regarding the Rakaia River? As for the Rakaia, I sat through the original water conservation order, which was about 1984. In those days the irrigators were largely sheep farmers, wanting better certainty of water supply. The conservationists wanted to secure the river flows for native wild life, the wry billed plover, and for the salmon run in particular. The jet-boaters and

kayakers’ interests were also in play, as they all still are today. Anything that threatens a river’s essential integrity needs to be looked at closely, especially big irrigation demands that may threaten those flows essential to in-stream life and the river’s contribution to aquifers, among other factors. I am not an expert in these matters, but there are sound reasons why the Canterbury Plains have not historically been favoured as a dairying region. These are rooted in the question of how suitable those gravels and hydrological systems are for the run-off that they generate. When nitrates, phosphorous and manure from cows produce the run-offs that have in many cases gone into our natural water systems for so long they present those health issues now being raised in some areas. These contaminants, which when not well managed, become nutrient enriching in waterways. They are also known to contribute to the systemic failure of Lake Ellesmere as a viable and

highly productive ecological system, long used by Maori, that is already costing millions to try to fix. At present there seems a conflict between the need for farmers to increase their production and the

As wise farmers already know, farming to make a profit is easier on both farmer and the land than living the crazy mantra, that productivity is everything. I was born just after the war, and in that time the world’s population has tripled, New Zealand’s population has well more than doubled and we have an ecological footprint that exceeds our capacity by five-fold. Our government has provided no leadership on the key issues, of sustainability and climate change. But in applying these principles there is no reason in this country why we cannot be prosperous and environmentally wellmanaged and be able to look future generations in the eye with the mana of those who had the courage to do things sustainably. What do you think the future looks like for the Rakaia? It’s a spell-binding braided river in an extraordinarily beautiful, dynamic environment and to know it is to love it. It will only be lack of will if it is allowed to degrade, and the Water Conservation Order should be allowed to do its work.

impact this has on our environment, specifically our waterways. Do you have any ideas how we can find a balance? Much of this is about respect for the land versus exploitation driven by not only farming, but banking and industrial agricultural interests. Also, sadly, by government. The all-in Land and Water Forum which ran for three years has made many recommendations and the government would be wise to adopt these wholesale in its impending water management framework for the Resource Management Act. I do think that if we are to respect the land and the rivers as well as the farmers, we need to be holistic in our thinking, which some farmers do very well. This means considering impacts now, not trying to clean up messes more expensively later, and asking how big is too big a farm, how much is too much debt?

Greendale principal Mathew Thompson is leaving behind the lush pastures of the country to try out life in the heat of South East Asia
Next year Mr Thompson and his family will move to Brunei, a country rich in oil and natural gas, whose head of state, the Sultan of Brunei, is one of the richest people in the world. “I will miss teaching here at Greendale; what an absolute privilege it has been to work here. Culture shock will be a problem, and our children will no doubt find moving to a large school of 1000 pupils extremely challenging from their current one of 30.” Mr Thompson said the move was in part inspired by a desire to get ahead
