Sean has already ticked that box. Trained by the NZ Army as a sniper and now serving as a corporal at Burnham Military Camp, he started taking photos of the New Zealand Defence Force Infantry eight years ago and, realising that he wanted to take photos full time, made a case for the army to enrol him at Ara. In that, he was successful. Sean was granted two-years’ study leave by the army, and now he is determined to use his photography skills to repay them. “I thought I could do more as a photographer for the army than I could as a grunt,” he said. “When I was crawling

around in the dirt, I thought someone should be photographing this. It is such an important job. We work so hard. It is really important that the general public sees the behind-the-scenes hard work that goes into it for New Zealand.” Sean was originally inspired by the great war photographers. “That’s where it all started — seeing those images and knowing I could be that person.” However, his inside knowledge of NZDF gives him a distinct advantage. “Because I went through the infantry ranks, I can provide a fresh look, and a new point of view, and get right in there amongst it all, without compromising

safety.” The military life made Sean a disciplined student at Ara. Now a graduate of the degree, Sean has a bright future ahead and is keen to travel the world, armed with his camera snapping shots of the military in action: “Wherever the guys go, a photographer will need to go with them, anywhere they are deployed.” AIPA executive director Aaron K awarded the scholarship to Sean last week at Lightworkx Studio. Sean now has three months of mentoring with an AIPA member, camera equipment and access to the AIPA Assistant Training Workshop. 

The landmark project for the Selwyn and Rolleston new library and community centre in the proposed Rolleston town centre will be known as Te Ara Atea. Te Taumutu Runanga formally gifted the name to the council, reflecting the centre’s role as a place for learning, gathering, connecting, exploring and celebrating the district’s heritage and people. “Meaning ‘the unobstructed trail to the world and beyond’, Te Ara Atea is particularly appropriate because the Rolleston area was part of a network of ancient trails,” says chairperson, Julie Robilliard. “We know that the people of the district will enjoy their new library and community centre and we are pleased to support the community by gifting this name.” Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton says the council has been working closely with Te Taumutu as a key partner during the development and design stages of the new library and community centre. “We are privileged that the runanga has gifted the name Te Ara Atea — which is so appropriate for a community facility

where we will celebrate our history but also look confidently to the future. “The idea of exploring, challenging and finding different pathways to learning and discovery is exactly what this exciting new space is about.” The town centre project is located on what is currently part of the Rolleston Reserve and is expected to start in mid-2019. ¢

West Melton School students spurned the classroom last Friday to try their skills on the field of play in a series of activities that also encouraged the development of teamwork.

The devastating Port Hills fire showed how much indiscriminate and widespread damage a rural fire can inflict. Fighting these fires is dangerous and expensive. Predictions of drier summers point to a growing hazard. The risk is greatly reduced though, if you check out the local rules for lighting a fire – ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’. At different places, at different times, there will be complete fire bans. Or, you might be able to light a fire with a permit. Or, there might be no permit necessary. You need a clear area for the fire. Make sure you can, and do, put it out before you leave. So, ‘Before you light, check it’s alright’.

p The Tug ‘o’ War was one of the most popular events amongst the pupils as they joined together to show strength in combinations at the round-robin athletics fun day. The Kowhai and Manuka community’s year one, two and three students participated in a variety of different sporting activities and the children spent time showing their many skills including working together as they focussed on producing their best efforts with determination, whilst being challenged in the various activities. The day was successfully organised by the year six students. This week the school marks the past year with a Celebration of Learning and Awards, which will take place throughout the day on Thursday, December 6. The event will feature performances by our the school band and kapa haka group in the new West Melton Community Centre with the band playing from 4.10pm onwards with all year four to eight children attending.

University appoints new vice-chancellor u by Mike Isle

Lincoln University has appointed a new acting vice-chancellor. He is Professor Bruce McKenzie, who will take over the role now held by Professor James McWha in January 2019. Professor McWha is expected to be appointed provost, which will involve offering advice, guidance and support to the university. The university’s chancellor, Steve Smith, said Professor McKenzie will provide solid, stable leadership as Lincoln continues to deliberate on its future structure. “Bruce is well known to Lincoln and has a proven track record of impeccable leadership after working at the university for more than 30 years. Staff have shown overwhelming support for his appointment, and we are thrilled that Bruce has agreed to take on the role.” Professor McKenzie’s association with the university began in the early 1980s, when he attended Lincoln as a student, completing a postgraduate diploma in agricultural science and then a PhD in agronomy and crop science. From there, he took up a 22-year post at the university as an associate professor of agronomy, responsible for teaching a range of classes in plant science, statistics and annual

crop production.In 2008, he became dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which involved managing 150 staff members in four departments. He worked in this role for more than seven years before becoming the university’s chief academic officer, overseeing Lincoln’s academic faculties, as well as the library, teaching and learning department, university studies and English language, and the research management office. He was appointed to the position of deputy vice-chancellor earlier this year. He will begin his new role as acting vice-chancellor on January 1 2019 and will remain in the position until June 30 2020. ¢

Be road safe

Police advice ahead of holidays

In the lead-up to Christmas, road users are encouraged to be alert to a new safety campaign that has been launched by police and the NZ Transport Agency.

Canterbury Police is focussing on reducing burglary and is calling the public to assist. They say there have been 11 burglars arrested during the past two weeks, eight of whom have been held in custody. Area prevention manager acting inspector, Paul Reeves, urges common sense when it comes to deterring burglars looking for an easy target over the summer months: lock houses and cars, close windows and leave valuables out of sight. “People do need to take a bit more ownership of their own security and think about how they can make it harder on the criminal.” Deadlocks on windows and doors can be effective, security signage, CCTV, alarms and sensor lights will also clearly discourage any burglar looking for easy entry, he said. He also suggests that, if away, have a trusted friend or neighbour clear your mailbox and open/close curtains from time to time. “If you plan to be out of town for a week or two, book someone to mow the lawn and set up basic automated lighting to mimic normal household use. “Essentially, do what you can to try and make your place appear as though you are not away on holiday. “I’d also recommend joining a Neighbourhood Support group, or creating one, whether you are in town

or country. If your neighbour is away and you see something that doesn’t look right, don’t delay — call 111.” Inspector Reeves said the key message is to call the police straight away if you suspect anything suspicious. “It is frustrating for us to hear about an incident when it’s too late to catch anyone at the scene. At the very least, if there’s a vehicle involved, I’d urge people to record the number plate.” According to police, items targeted by burglars commonly include laptops and computers, TVs, jewellery, wallets/cash, work tools and other portable high-value items. Police recommend photographing valuables and engrave them (with your driver’s licence number) and recording serial numbers, so after a burglary, the job of tracking down property is made a little easier. Also recommended is adding a name and phone number to electronic items using a UV marker. Neighbourhood Support provide warning stickers to put on windows as a deterrent, and you can create and store an asset list of property serial numbers through a police website called SNAP: snap.org.nz. ¢

Associate Minister of Transport, Julie Anne Genter, says reducing the number of deaths and serious accidents on our roads is her top priority as the associate minister of transport. “These crashes impact families and communities across New Zealand,’’ she says. “I don’t want to see more people facing the festive season without their loved ones. Police will be out on the roads working hard to keep everyone safe, but they can’t do it alone. Karen was the first female to gain entrance into the NZ Army Physical Training Corps and became a physical training instructor at the Burnham base. “I left the army as I have four children and I then gained 30kg and had fallen into a huge rut. I designed myself a programme to get back on track, and that is the programme I won the excellence award for. I wanted to help others as well so started running boot camps at the West Melton domain and school. We then built an exercise shed on our property, and I now run ‘Boot camp with Kaz’ there.” Karen has been in the health and fitness industry for more than 20 years and has run her boot camps for five years. She was also a finalist in

the Small Group Trainer category of the awards. “There was some good competition, and other finalists were from fabulous gyms, and their programmes were quite unique. I love helping people reach their full physical potential and seeing someone arrive with no energy and unable to do a press up or run and then suddenly can play soccer with the children or help hubby with their work. I love seeing people get back into being able to live to their full physical potential and doing things they love to do. “Being a part of the awards was a fantastic opportunity and being recognised for all the hard work was amazing — it is the biggest achievement in my career.” ¢

Canterbury tertiary education provider Ara has achieved nearperfect employment rates for its registered nursing graduates in 2018. Of those graduating from the Ara course, 99% found full-time work in the health sector, according to figures released by Nursing Education in the Tertiary Sector. Ara’s head of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health, Cathy Andrew, says it has never been a better time to be a nurse, especially in Canterbury. “Conditions are better than ever, and the employment rates show that the jobs are there for our graduates to walk into,” she said. “Those who are drawn to nursing will find their skills in demand, especially as older nurses are retiring, and opportunities are opening up for newer nurses to specialise clinically or move into wider health management or education careers.” One of those finding her newlyfound skills in demand is Leeston dairy farmer and mother of three Lynette Webber. Moreover, the overriding motivation, she said was a wish to help people. CentreStage Rolleston’s debut show at the Rolleston School Hall, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, has lived up to its high expectations say organisers.

Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council are asking for public feedback on two proposed trial bus services; one between Leeston and Christchurch, and the other between Darfield and Christchurch. Environment Canterbury senior manager public transport, Stewart Gibbon, said they need to know if the community agrees there is a need for a daily commuter service. “As part of its Long Term Plan, Selwyn District Council has committed to funding one return bus service daily during the working week, on a trial basis, as long as the community agrees there is a need for such a service and is prepared to support it,” said Gibbon. “We are asking for input from the community on if they would use such a service, as well as the times and pick up/drop off locations for the trial services that would best meet their needs,” he said. Selwyn District Council asset manager transportation, Andrew Mazey said, “We understand these are growing communities, and there is a need for improved connectivity to Christchurch for those living in

Darfield and Leeston that doesn’t just rely on using private motor vehicles. “These routes will provide a number of people an alternative way to connect to Christchurch for a range of purposes like education, health services and employment.” The proposal is that the Leeston service would go to central Christchurch via Doyleston, Irwell and Springston. The Darfield service would go via Kirwee and West Melton to the city. The trial services are intended to start from January 2019 for a six-month trial period. Brochures with feedback forms were delivered to Selwyn residents last week, and copies are available at the Leeston and Darfield libraries and service centres. People can also complete the survey online atmetroinfo.co.nz. Adult prices a trip would range from $3.85 to $7.50. The survey is open until December 11, 2018.

An Ara Institute of Canterbury study has shown that children’s lunchboxes in Canterbury are coming close to meeting Ministry of Health guidelines for daily amounts of fruit and vegetables. However, the study also reveals children are not always eating them. Ara student Abby Taylor, who studied the contents of Canterbury children’s lunchboxes, said 264 participants completed an online survey. She found that brown bread was more common than white bread, vegetables were about 50% of lunches and water was the main drink. “This is a positive snapshot. However, this was mitigated slightly by the finding that only 4.2% of children returned chips in their lunchbox but 27.3% returned fruit or vegetables.” Abby said that parents often prioritised food their children would actually eat and preferred, and healthy food was the second consideration. “I think it is really important that kids get a good start. Parents are the ones who choose what their kids eat; however, they don’t always get much say, so it is interesting to see what they are feeding their children,” Abby said. According to a fellow student, Alicia Clark sending a daily text message could encourage children to

eat more fruit and vegetables. In her study, Alicia, and nutrition programme leader Dr Maria Choukri texted 26 students daily to remind them of the positive effects of eating five serves of fruit and vegetables a day. Fruit and vegetable intake increased by 1.2 serves a day; up from three serves a day, Alicia said. According to the Ministry of Health, parents and caregivers need to be encouraging and incentivising children into healthy eating habits. The ministry recommends that two to five-year-olds should have at least two servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit each day, and children above five years should try to have at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit each day. It also recommends wholegrain bread instead of white bread, margarine instead of butter (spread thinly) and water or reduced-fat milk rather than soft drinks, cordial or sports drinks. ¢

It was a proud night for 10-year-old Tessa Herridge. That was the night she was awarded all 29 available badges at the Rolleston St John Youth awards. Tessa is believed to be the only cadet in New Zealand to receive all the badges in one level.

While it’s all furious action and last minute preparation at the north pole, folks here in New Zealand may still be wondering what the hottest gifts of the season really are. Can you be sure of getting just the right thing for the kids? A poll of online and physical retailers around the world reveals some surprising — and not so surprising — trends. When it comes to toys for the kids, there are old favourites topping the list — but with a new twist. Laser tag is back, but forget the clunky old sets of the 1980s — the modern game is lighter, more fast-paced, and doesn’t devour whole skip bins full of aa batteries. Reliable LEGO is in number two spot with a choice between Harry Potter themed sets — the Hogwarts great hall is this year’s centrepiece — or the neverending juggernaut that is Star Wars. Unsurprisingly, considering the rise of e-scooters and e-bikes in the news, both traditional and electrically powered scooters and bicycles are still right in the top five. Nevertheless, a strange new addition is slime. Kits and ‘laboratories’ for creating glittery, glowing, sticky and downright gross slimy substances are hot for 2018 — a variation on the silly

putty of yesteryear. The final spot in this year’s top five goes to robots — dancing robots, robot dogs, baby dolls, kittens and more. There’s something almost scary about how lifelike these animatronic toys have become in recent times! Of course, the top five is not for everyone. Kids are as individual as adults and the gift which says the most is one, which reflects a deeper knowledge of what your children are enthusiastic about. Expensive toys may confer a day of bragging rights, but gifts which nurture their talents and show that you’re engaged with their world to keep on giving all year long. As to all the other toys in the shop — suffice to say that grown-up men are the second biggest market for things like Nerf guns, video games, superhero

figurines and model cars at Christmas. Proving once and for all that you’re

never too old to want to stay off the ‘naughty list’. ¢

At a time of the year when top ten lists and awards ceremonies abound, one of the toughest decisions has to be the coveted title of car of the year. Here in New Zealand that choice is informed by a varied and challenging driving environment — and auto manufacturers never make it easy to select a winner, with new offerings striving to excel in areas as varied as fuel economy, environmental impact and sheer luxury. However, there can be only one. Unlike in other international selections, just a single vehicle will be crowned best of the best. The final selection for this year contains some wild cards indeed, all of which vary from the current reigning 2017 champion, the Skoda Kodiaq. BMW’s X3 is the priciest offering in the range and brings the ethos of Germany’s ‘ultimate driving machine’ to an evolved and stylish four-wheel drive platform. Subaru’s Forester approaches the same ground from a very different direction, as a ‘grown-up’ and more advanced iteration of the still popular go-anywhere wagon of yesteryear. Meanwhile, Skoda’s Karoq is looking to repeat the stellar performance of the Kodiaq, with a different spin on the same alchemy which made its stablemate number one. Toyota’s Camry is a far cry from the original of the same name, adding a little of the excitement and stylistic edginess of its big brothers in the Lexus range while retaining Toyota’s

dependable reputation. Holden brings a bit of the best of the old and the new with a Commodore wagon that’s a long way from the one your dad used to drive — but with the same space and practicality welded to greater efficiency and fuel economy. Hyundai’s affordable Kona crossover proves that good things come in small

packages and with smaller price tags, while Kia’s surprising, potent Stinger packs a turbocharged punch and proves that the Korean marque can mix it up with the big boys in terms of performance. Mercedes bring the sophistication and pedigree of their larger models to the hatchback market in the form of the A-Class, and two Volvos — the XC40 and

XC60 show that the Scandinavian badge is not just about safety — it stands for style, individuality and nimble handling as well. All said a tough group from which to pick a winner. On December 12 that’s just what the judges will do, crowning one of these machines NZ Car of the Year. ¢
