Education Minister Hekia Parata was on hand to do the honours at the opening of Rolleston College Horoeka Haemata. She was joined at the event by 214 Year 9 founding students, 32 staff and hundreds of invited guests and parents including Selwyn MP Amy Adams and Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton. Rolleston College principal Steve Saville told the crowd which had gathered for the opening that everyone involved in the new school build was jointly celebrating with them as they start the next stage of the journey. “We are delighted and excited to be at this point. It is the result of a huge

amount of work from a large number of committed individuals from within the local community and by those working at a national level,” Mr Saville said. “Our fantastic new school will provide for a huge range of learning opportunities with its large theatre and gym, flexible learning spaces that will accommodate technology, the performing and creative arts, as well as the core curriculum areas. It is hoped that these wonderful spaces will become genuine community facilities as we develop and grow. “Another special part of our school is the Waitaha School satellite, catering for students with additional learning needs.”

Establishment Board of Trustees chairperson Jackie Freeman said the official opening was an opportunity to thank everyone who had made a significant contribution to the new school. “A secondary school has been a long time coming to Rolleston and many people have worked tirelessly behind the scenes for this to happen,” Mrs Freeman said. “Their hard work and passion for our children’s education is now a reality with this incredible school.”

The university’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Robin Pollard said considerable thought had been given to the positions and appointments, including discussion at staff fora, with council members and other stakeholders. “We needed to rebuild the senior management team, and that involved taking into account existing capabilities, preserving some organisational memory and encouraging fresh approaches,” Professor Pollard said. “The senior roles have been designed and filled to ensure that our community of scholars will flourish.” Professor Bruce McKenzie has been installed as Chief Academic Officer after holding the position in an interim capacity since June of last year. He originally joined the university staff as Dean of the Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty in 2008. Philippa Jones, who joined Lincoln University in March 2016 as a project manager has been named Chief Operating Officer while the university’s Finance Director Howard Gant has

The 320-metre section of road on the east side of Masefield Drive between the Levi and Lowes roads intersection to Dryden Avenue is without a footpath, and the work includes constructing a new footpath as well as kerb and channel installation, seal widening and road berm construction. The work being undertaken will link up the existing footpath network between Levi Road and Dryden Avenue. Council transportation asset engineer Mark Chamberlain said the route is expected to become busier both with pedestrians and vehicles in the future, as consents have been granted to allow the shopping complex on the corner

of Masefield and Rolleston Drives to expand. “Masefield Drive will also carry more traffic when the Weedons Interchange is constructed as part of Stage 2 of the Christchurch Southern Motorway Extension.” A sealed bus bay will be installed on Masefield Drive as part of the current works. Mr Chamberlain said the work is being undertaken as a result of requests from the public and is being funded from an unbudgeted SICON dividend and doesn’t impact on rates. The road will remain open during work, with traffic controls in place, and construction is expected to be completed by March. ¢

Broadband improvements u by Kent Caddick

Up to 8,500 Selwyn residents and business owners are set to benefit from the announcement that five new areas in the district will receive ultra-fast broadband (UFB) under stage two of the government’s Ultra-Fast Broadband programme.

p Rolleston College Establishment Board of Trustees chair Jackie Freeman, left, Selwyn MP Amy Adams and Minister of Education Hekia Parata pose for a photograph after the minister officially opened the town’s first high school

Ms Adams helped to plant a Lancewood tree at the front of the school to mark the opening, while Rolleston College gifted Lancewood trees to the seven local primary schools, five of which provided the college with its founding pupils. Over the next five years Rolleston College will be taking in a new influx of Year 9 students with the school roll expected to hit 1,100 by 2021. The high school, which was built under the government’s publicprivate partnership programme, has been built to eventually house up to 1,800 students. Mr Saville paid tribute to a number of individuals and groups who had helped to get the school ready for its opening. “Linda Youl from the Ministry of Education and Tom Scanlon our

governance facilitator have been extremely supportive and the support we have received from the local Rolleston community including the local primary schools has been fantastic.” Rolleston College was one of two schools to open in Rolleston this week, with Lemonwood Grove Primary School also taking in its inaugural students. Around 50 students settled into the school on East Maddisons Road which was built to cope with the residential growth in the east of the Rolleston township with subdivisions like Faringdon filling up rapidly. The school is being built in two stages with the first stage housing up to 450 students with stage two to take an additional 300 students. See more photos from the opening on page 14.  ¢

West Melton, Darfield, Leeston, Southbridge and the Lincoln fringe to Springston area are among 151 towns across New Zealand which will receive UFB as part of the next stage of the programme. The UFB roll-out will be carried out between January 2020 and August 2023. Mayor Sam Broughton says the announcement is good news for local residents and businesses in these locations. “We’re pleased that government has responded to requests from local communities to increase its investment in these areas,” Mayor Broughton said. “Fast broadband access is now an essential tool for many businesses to operate, as well as giving residents better access to a wide range of services and enabling them to keep in touch with friends and family.” He said UFB is already available in Rolleston, much of Lincoln and is currently being rolled out in Prebbleton. The new areas were determined by government after councils were invited to identify priority areas for improving broadband access. After consulting

with local communities in 2015, Selwyn District Council requested broadband to be rolled out to Darfield, Kirwee, Leeston and Southbridge, as well as the extension of UFB to all of Lincoln and Tai Tapu. Selwyn MP Amy Adams, who until recently held the government’s communications portfolio, said the expansion is great news for the areas involved. “Households and businesses in Lincoln and Rolleston are already making the most of the UFB network, and the roll-out is currently underway in Prebbleton,” Ms Adams said. “The expansion will mean that an additional 8,485 residents and business-owners in many of our other towns around Selwyn will also be able to reap the benefits of a world-class broadband service in the coming years.” The Selwyn council has also made submissions on improving rural broadband coverage in areas where existing coverage is poor, such as rural parts of Malvern and Ellesmere, and for mobile phone coverage to be increased along State Highway 73 and at tourism locations such as ski fields.

Golden run continues for sprinter u by Kent Caddick

Rolleston runner Maia Broughton’s golden summer has continued with the sprinter helping the Canterbury team to a win at the recent South Island Junior Teams and Open competition. Competing in the junior division at the meeting held at the Caledonian ground, the 14-year-old Lincoln College student took out the girls’ 100m, 200m and long jump titles. This comes on the back of her quadruple success at the South Island Colgate Games, considered the pinnacle of junior club athletics, the previous weekend. Maia picked up gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump events and helped the Selwyn Athletics Club, of which she is a founding member, to a bronze in the relay at the Colgate Games which were held in Invercargill. “Pretty cool,” was Maia’s reaction to being asked about her success with Canterbury in Dunedin, at which she was the top points’ scorer for her team in the grade 14 division. “It was really exciting to be at the event especially with an Australian team from Queensland taking part as well.” Maia paid tribute to her coach, former New Zealand sprint representative Bev Peterson, for her recent successes. “She is a pretty important part of that. She is great to work with and really

makes training enjoyable, which other coaches don’t always do.” Maia said she has always liked running but had a terrible style, which is getting better. She said the support of the Selwyn Athletics Club has been awesome. “They are so supportive and the club is like one big family.” Her mother Kim Broughton, who also has an athletics background, said Maia is dedicated to her training. “In some ways that’s what sets her apart from others as even when she is not working with her coach or training with the club, she will take herself off to the park to train on her own,” Kim said. “We could see from an early age Maia was a bit of a natural athlete as she was always out in front during her races at primary school, but she has stuck at it, even at this age when often youngsters drift away from their sport.” While athletics is undoubtedly Maia’s favourite sport, she said she also loves playing netball and volleyball. “But they often clash with athletics and both are tough on my knees so I decided to focus on running.”

p Maia Broughton competing for the Selwyn Athletics Club at an interclub meeting in Christchurch

Her short-term goals are to keep focussed and train hard but in the long term she admits she has an eye on the silver fern. “I have been approached by the New Zealand selectors who will be picking the team to go to the World Junior Championships in Finland in

2018, so I would be pretty keen to make the team.” While Maia will continue to compete for the Selwyn Athletics Club in the Canterbury interclub competition, the next big event on her calendar is the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in Hamilton in March. ¢

Selwyn Athletics Club athletes were back in action over the weekend at the latest round of the Canterbury interclub competition. The Selwyn Athletics Club is one of the fastest growing sporting bodies in the district. It began in 2012 on the grounds of Rolleston School with less than 50 children, but quickly outgrew the school grounds and moved to Brookside Park in 2013. Membership has grown steadily since then with the club sitting at 210 at the end of the 2016 season. The latest round of the Canterbury interclub was once again held at Rawhiti Domain in Christchurch which has been hosting many local athletic events since QEII Park was demolished following the Canterbury earthquakes. Club captain Rachel Simons said they had some great results on the day and across the board the athletes

performed well with many setting personal best records. Among the top performers on the day were Meg Edwards in the grade 9 division with a first in the long jump and second in the 100m sprint and Jody McCarthy-Dempsey who took out the grade 9 girls’ discus throw. In grade 11 Charlotte Mercer had a good meeting with a first in the 100m and second in the 400m, while Chloe Middlewood-Krsinic took out the division’s discus competition and Kayla Simons, finishing first in the 1,200m race walk. Maia Broughton once again dominated the girls’ grade 14 with wins in the 100m, 400m and long jump. The best performers out of the boys were Isaiah Savea who took out the grade 9 shot put with a throw of 9.71m and Luke Barrett who was first home in the grade 13 200m sprint. ¢

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Of benefit is the fresh and economic supply of consumables such as eggs, milk and meat making the idea of owning stock very attractive. From this produce a variety of home staples can be made, such as cheese and yoghurt. Animals can also provide natural fibres, such as wool, alpaca fleece and mohair from goats, which can be used in clothing and home furnishings. While owning animals has a lot of benefits, there are some potential pitfalls that you need to be aware of. Firstly, you are legally responsible for the animals on your property and can be held liable for neglect or mistreatment. Owning livestock is a big time commitment and does restrict your activities, such as time spent away from home. It is important to have a reliable backup person organised, who can look after your animals when you can’t. Animals still need looking after even in the snow and rain, so buy some wet weather gear and be prepared to brave the elements. One cannot emphasise enough the benefits of good fencing for stock management and neighbourly relations. Keep your stock where they’re meant to be. You will also need to think of stock

handling facilities for times when your animals need treatments, shearing and loading on a trailer. An area which has good shelter and housing also needs to be considered, as well as feed storage areas. Stock attracts vermin, so how will you take care of these? Animals don’t live forever so from time to time you will need to deal with sickness and death. You will need to build some knowledge about animal

health and be prepared to call in the vet if required. When deaths occur you need a plan for the disposal of the animal. Just like the birds and the bees, animals do procreate. Ensure your animals breed only if you want them to and that you are prepared for the birth of offspring. If you are well-prepared and ready to put the work in then having stock can add a lot to your lifestyle property. Lifestyle blocks

Fencing on the block u by Pete Gregory

Most lifestyle properties will need fencing, especially if you’re keeping livestock, as you’ll need fences to keep them in and to keep unwanted animals out. You can either elect to do this fencing yourself or use a contractor. There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from doing your own fencing, but it isn’t as easy as it looks. The best advice I can give anyone if you’ve never fenced before, is to start with some professional help. Get a contractor in, work with them, watch and learn. One way to save money but still feel a sense of accomplishment, is to have a contractor drive in all the fence posts with tractor and rammer and for you to finish all the wire work. That way you can say ‘I built that fence’. While it’s good to get it all sorted at once, you don’t need to deal with all the fencing in one go. Get any boundary fences sorted out first. Use temporary electric fencing to split paddocks up, to work out what works, then put in permanent fences over a period of time. Think carefully about what type or height of fence you put in. Conventional height fences are always a safe bet. The livestock you’re running now might not be what you have on the property in future. So putting up two foot high fences for the Carpathian Pygmy Cattle you’re breeding today might limit you next year when you cross graze them with Ecuadorian Jumping Sheep. Gate placement can make all the difference to your day. In can be difficult to get cattle to go through gates in the middle of a fence line. A gateway in the corner of a paddock is easier to shift stock through. Gateways need to be big enough for vehicles and farm machinery to fit through. Hay baling machinery will need more width than most to get through, especially conventional size balers. Fencing can be dangerous, so be careful with wire strainers and any wire under tension. When handling wire always wear safety eyewear and protective clothing, including suitable gloves and steel capped boots. Cut ends of wire are sharp. Always bend back the

Dining & Entertainment

An abundance of eateries There are many options when it comes to dining and entertainment in the area, from hip cafes, cosy clubs and historic taverns. If you are after a friendly environment with bar facilities, a diverse menu and entertainment, the Hornby Working Men’s Club can provide this in a controlled environment for male and female members and their guests. The club has a pleasant atmosphere for members to gather and socialise, and live entertainment is a regular occurrence on Friday and Saturday nights. The club cafe and Chalmers Restaurant have a range of catering options at reasonable prices, and staff are happy to host special occasions for their members. There is a strong emphasis on sports and social activities for members, and there is the chance to make many new friends by getting involved. Cafe Izone is the place to visit, whether it is a quick bite to eat to break up a journey, or a place to take the family for a longer lunch.

The cafe is located 20 minutes out of the centre of Christchurch and is recognisable by its distinctive shade sails, perfect for escaping the summer heat. Sit a while and enjoy the view overlooking the Canterbury plains skyline and the beautiful Southern Alps whilst treating yourself to something tasty from their extensive menu. If it is more of a historic experience you are after, why not pay a visit to Tai Tapu Hotel, Restaurant and Bar. The hotel was established in 1856 when Edmund Shakespeare built an accommodation house and named it after himself. Shakespeare’s Accommodation house became, through time, Canterbury’s oldest pub. With these options there is sure to be something to suit everyone, whether it is a quiet night off from cooking, a special celebration or a casual family outing.

Oi!

Café Izone wants to give one couple a meal out on us, on Valentine’s Day from our special Valentine’s Day menu. *Includes entrée, main, dessert and a cocktail and/or a beer. To enter make a booking with us for Valentine’s Day before February 13th, 5pm and the winner will be chosen at random on the night. Call us now so you don’t miss out.

It’s the first big automotive showcase for the year, and each year the Detroit Auto Show brings out a round of concept cars and new arrivals which point the way forward for the next 12 months. Unlike many of the other shows on the big tour — Tokyo, Geneva and the like — there is usually a serious undercurrent to this event, with more real production models breaking cover and less flights of fancy.

back to their rallying roots, with a hardedged new look for the WRX, harking back to the days of its WRC dominance. No evidence of a new Mitsubishi Evo to take it on head to head, but the Tokyo Motor Show awaits. Toyota’s once-staid family-friendly Camry was unveiled with an aggressive new look, putting it in line with the newfound fire in Toyota’s R&D department, kindled by the 86 and set to blaze when the new Supra replacement breaks cover mid year. Elsewhere — and across the board — it’s been a year for electricity. BMW showed off a 5 series plug in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles proliferated, with concepts from the wild to the mild. Perhaps the most striking — VW’s new take on the microbus, the Kombi updated with a fully electric power plant and 21st century retro-future lines.  ¢

It’s a look at the ‘most wanted’ list coming to forecourts during 2017, and the 80,000 people who visited Cobo Hall to witness the cutting edge were not disappointed. Ford came on strong with a new diesel F150 pickup, but Kiwi fans will have their eyes on an updated 2018 Mustang. The super-popular sports car took a hit of criticism from ANCAP in safety testing recently, but upgraded features on the new model — paired with some sharp tweaking and fettling — should silence the critics.
