“Hot air balloons hold certain magic, and the Hororata Community Trust is very excited to be bringing the Night Glow back for a second year. The festival last year was amazing, not only for its entertainment value but it also benefited our community in many ways,” said Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer, Cindy Driscoll. The event was recognised by winning the 2018 Selwyn Tourism award, with judges commenting “The judges were particularly impressed by the clear evidence of community engagement. It is clear that many community groups, and the community as a whole, benefitted from this event economically and socially. The balloons are undoubtedly

the main attraction of the festival, but we have new surprises in the pipeline, which will see the Hororata Night Glow build on what we did last year, details of these will be released soon. The festival surrounding the Night Glow entertains visitors with science demonstrations, a walk through a cold inflated balloon, food and wine sampling, live music, a huge range of food vendors and much more,” Driscoll said. “Running two large events (Hororata Highland Games and Night Glow) each year is a big ask for our community, not only for volunteer commitment but also funding. “The Night Glow is a new event, which needs investment to establish

its future for our community. It also represents an excellent marketing opportunity for innovative businesses. We always look at any partnership to be a win-win scenario. The Hororata Night Glow has the potential to be a major event for Canterbury with national and international appeal, but we will never lose sight of its community roots and ensure a family-friendly atmosphere with just a touch of magic.” The Hororata Night Glow will be held Saturday, May 18 2019 at the Hororata Domain, 3pm to 8.30pm. Discounted tickets will be sold online from April 1. More information can be found at hororatanightglow.org.nz or on Facebook. 

Doggone it—we did it For the tenth consecutive year, Selwyn District Council has achieved 100% re-registration of known dogs for the year. That is based on dogs registered in the 2017/18 year, which were still on the council’s records. There are now 13,659 dogs registered for the 2018/19 year. Senior Animal Control Officer Steve Clarke said that the result indicates Selwyn is a dog-friendly district, where dog owners are responsible and take good care of their pets. “People love their dogs and are usually more than happy to pay the registration fee to avoid seizure,” he said. “The Dog Control Act gives council officers power to seize any unregistered dogs, but thankfully it hasn’t come to that.” Mr Clarke said a number of factors contribute to the council maintaining its 100% registration, as required by law — this includes the comparatively low fees for registering their dogs and the council’s online payment service. “The fee is discounted if it’s paid in July, with the full fee payable from August. If fees are not paid the dog owner can expect an infringement notice.”

“Online registration has made it even easier for people to register their dogs — 1,322 of our owners used our Dogs Online website to make alterations to their record with 914 of them using it to pay the registration. Of our 8,519 owners, 7,122 received their renewal notices via email,” Mr Clarke said. At the end of the 2017/18 registration year, there were 13,524 dogs registered with the council, which was up from 13,202 in the 2016/17 year. ¢

Rolleston College’s first Antipodeans team have completed their first training trek in preparation for their international adventure in April.

p Rolleston College Antipodeans team are preparing for their trip to Vietnam and Cambodia

“In 2017 thirteen year nine students took up the challenge to take part in an expedition to Vietnam and Cambodia. We recently welcomed Antips leader Tony Mumford and are now counting down to our departure,” says senior lead teacher Sophie Ralph. “The team trekked around Banks Peninsula in record time for the training, which was awesome for a 30 degree Sunday hike.” Antipodeans was started in 1991 by an Australian school teacher, driven by a love for travel and a belief in its benefits for education and personal development. The ethos of leadership, mindfulness, resilience and experiential learning aligns with the values in the Rolleston Spirit — Develop Self, Transform Futures and Build Communities as well as our Hauora values of resilience and mindfulness. “The pupils created their own 21day itinerary, which will take them through the highlands of Cambodia on a four-day trek where they will stay with local residents.” They will complete a community project at Phouc Hiep primary school in the Ben Tre province, Vietnam where they are building a school playground. “In addition to the personal fundraising, the team has raised an extra

$1,500 to buy the supplies to complete this project. Finally, they will experience local culture through exploring what the towns and cities have to offer. “The students have been divided into leadership groups and are responsible for transport, accommodation, and food on their leadership days. “They begin their responsibility once we reach the airport in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Teachers and the guide ensure safety but let the leaders make decisions on the days they are in charge.” ¢

Total fire ban in Selwyn u by Mike Isle

Weeks without rain and little prospect of a meaningful downfall in the near future have forced Fire and Emergency New Zealand to announce a total fire ban in Selwyn. As of today, no open fires will be allowed, and all existing permits for fires are rescinded until further notice. The district’s deputy rural fire officer Dale Wilhelm said that although some rain was forecast it was unlikely to be enough to mitigate the dry conditions throughout the district and the long-term forecast of further dry conditions means any relief would be short-lived. He said that all outstanding permits would be suspended, and no new permits would be issued until the district received sustained wet weather. Barbecues can still be used without a permit. Emergency services have been on high alert for weeks, and the forest fires in Nelson have highlighted the risk throughout the South Island. Selwyn has sent a stream of firefighters north to Nelson to help, but they will be recalled if there is an outbreak here. The Nelson outbreak is believed to have been caused

by sparks from farm machinery and farmers in Selwyn are taking special care. Dale Wilhelm said that Fire and Emergency were working closely with Federated Farmers, and farmers throughout the district were concerned about the fire danger. However, it is not only the farming community that needs to take care. Fire and Emergency NZ is urging everybody to avoid activities such as welding, grinding and even mowing lawns during the hottest part of the day as those activities may inadvertently cause a fire. They say it is also sensible for people with homes near trees, scrub or dry grass to do a check of their property to ensure they have minimised the risk of a fire spreading and that they can provide clear and easy access to fire crews in the event of an emergency. People can find tips for keeping their property safe on the Fire and Emergency New Zealand website.

Selwyn’s sooty mould threat Selwyn District Council reserves operation manager Jonathan Crawford says that the long spell of dry weather has been favourable for sooty mould and whilst it is not a health risk it still poses a threat to plant life. He says sooty mould is a black or dark-coloured fungal deposit, which appears on the leaves of many different types of trees and plants. The mould, which looks like soot or coal dust, is caused by sap-sucking insects (mainly scale and aphids), which produce sugary secretions (honeydew) on which the mould grows. These insects are attracted to trees and shrubs in times of stress and often before leaf fall. “We are not aware of any evidence that the mould presents a health risk, unlike household black mould — however, we would still like to manage the presence of it on our trees. “A mild winter, followed by a warm and wet spring and early summer has created the perfect conditions for the insects to reproduce, Mr Crawford said. Sooty mould is widespread in many areas of New Zealand and affects many different types of trees and plants. It can be found on trees around and gardens in reserves, as well in private gardens. The council’s maintenance contractors carry out pruning on street and reserve trees throughout the year, including thinning the canopy, which

Pay attention!

reduces the environment preferred by these insects. Mr Crawford said the Selwyn District Council undertakes pruning throughout the year and appreciates it when members of the public make it aware of areas where there are sooty mould outbreaks. “We’re looking to work in partnership with the community to combat sooty mould, and while we are always keeping an eye out, being made aware of potential hot spots allows us to quickly attack the problem.â€? Nearly all plants and trees in Selwyn are susceptible to aphids, mealybugs and scale, so in turn, are vunerable to sooty mould. If you are aware of any street or reserve trees that have sooty mould on them, please contact the council on 03 347 2800 or email reserves@ selwyn.govt.nz. For general information on sooty mould, and managing sooty mould on your own property, a range of resources is available online including sites such as kiwicare.co.nz, kiwigardener.co.nz (see forum). The bugging problem with pools u by Mike Isle

February is typically the hottest month of the year for us in New Zealand. These hotter temperatures make taking a dip in a nice cool swimming pool very appealing, and as the school year begins, school pools will become especially popular. Most people don’t know that swimming pools are also an ideal breeding ground for serious gastro bugs such as Cryptosporidium (commonly known as Crypto) and other bugs such as Norovirus, Giardia and E coli, all of which are very unpleasant and potentially dangerous. With pools, the main way we can become ill is through contact with infected or polluted water. So, to reduce the chances of people getting sick after making a splash, Canterbury DHB is raising awareness of how these bugs are transmitted in community pools and is encouraging people to follow simple advice to help limit their spread. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, Dr Ramon Pink, said people wrongly assume chlorine will kill everything, but Crypto, in particular, is resistant to the standard chlorine dosages we find in most pools. “People can become ill by sharing a swimming pool or spa with a person who has had a recent infection and hasn’t fully recovered from the illness. Most people who contract gastro

p Is he sharing the pool with something nasty?

infections experience symptoms such as watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea, vomiting and fever. Others, who have weakened immune systems, can develop a serious, chronic and sometimes fatal illness. “These symptoms can occur on and off for weeks — which is why we are asking people to respect a standdown period of two weeks after their symptoms subside, during which they should avoid swimming in pools or sharing a spa. This is to ensure they have fully recovered and are no longer infectious,â€? said Dr Pink. ¢

p The police were out ‘in force’at the West Melton Picnic in the Park

Picnics in the parks are a popular part of the council’s Summer in Selwyn programme, and the West Melton leg lived up to expectations with a large crowd flocking to the domain. The council’s senior events and recreation adviser David Tippett said the aim of the event was to connect people to their community. That was certainly the case in West Melton. Love was in the air on St Valentine’s Day, and it mixed with lots of laughter and squeals of delight as a big police presence provided by Policeman Rick’s speed camera sprint racing, and Lieutenant Lou’s clown police, entertained family groups.

Other attractions included Pedalmania bikes, garden games, bouncy castles, face painting and live music from Holly Kimber. “It was great to see everyone being active or relaxing, and most of all enjoying the atmosphere at their local park,” Mr Tippett said. The council has scheduled four more picnics in the park: Burnham: Thursday, January 21 — Freyberg Domain; Dunsandel: Thursday, February 28 — Dunsandel Domain. Care needed around stock Partnership announced u by Mike Isle

The serious injuries sustained by a Canterbury farmer this month when he was attacked by a bull have once again highlighted the need for care when handling stock.

p Plan your escape route

At the time of the earlier attack president of Federated Farmers North Canterbury Cameron Henderson, who farms in the area at Oxford, said the tragedy was unusual. “It is incredibly rare to have a death by a cattle beast in New Zealand,” he said. Nevertheless, Worksafe New Zealand devotes a substantial portion of its website to the safe handling of stock, including cattle, and deer. The website has downloadable guides to the safe handling of each of the above. Some recommendations Worksafe makes are common to all.

They include anyone working with stock is appropriately trained and experienced for the task, keeping yards tidy and well maintained, and planning an escape route when working with cattle in the yards. Worksafe says injuries are most likely to happen to farmers who don’t have the experience to assess the risks, have stock not handled by humans often, for example, run cattle and are tired, such as during calving season when farmers work long hours with broken sleep. Worksafe’s website is worksafe.govt. nz. ¢

WorkSafe New Zealand has today announced a partnership with the FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition. WorkSafe chief executive Nicole Rosie said the partnership connects New Zealand’s future farming leaders with health and safety in an engaging setting, building rapport with rural communities and help create generational change. “We want to help those farmers just starting out to understand health and safety is about caring for themselves and their people. Good health and safety practices are at the heart of every successful farm business.” For the Young Farmer of the Year, WorkSafe will run individual health and safety challenges at each of the seven regional finals as well as a single event at the grand final, created collaboratively between Young Farmers’ representatives and local WorkSafe staff. The first regional final is being held in Milton tomorrow. As part of the support, WorkSafe will also be running challenges in the AgriKidsNZ and Junior Young Farmer of the Year sections. New Zealand Young Farmers chief executive Lynda Coppersmith says the partnership with WorkSafe is the perfect fit. “Our organisation has a strong focus on health and safety. We want young farmers to become old farmers, that’s what makes this partnership a perfect fit, and we’re hopeful it will help efforts to improve health and safety on farms and in agri-businesses.”

p Martin Bates, who farms at Charing Cross, is one of three Selwyn representatives in this year’s Young Farmer of the Year Tasman final

WorkSafe joins other sponsors including Ravensdown, New Holland, Honda, Stihl, FMG, Massey University, AGMARDT, Lincoln University, Betacraft and Meridian. The Tasman regional final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year will be held on March 2 at the Muri Showgrounds. Selwyn is represented by Alex Knowles, 25, an agri-manager for Ravensdown, Jonny Brown, 27, is an assistant manager on a dairy farm at Rakaia and Martin Bates who contract milks 1,200 cows across two farms at Charing Cross.  ¢

A month of Sundays usually means that something is unlikely to happen. For the Selwyn District Council’s innovative Month of Sundays on Lincoln Green, the reverse is the case. The council, with the help of event sponsor Farringdon Rolleston, is putting on a series of free concerts featuring talented local musicians. There have been three ‘Sundays’ so far, and there is one to go this coming Sunday to complete the February programme. Council senior events and recreation adviser David Tippett said the Sundays in the park had been a huge success with plenty on offer. “What we wanted to do is create an opportunity where families could come along to a brilliant location, listen to local musicians, p Bongani and daughter Mbalenhle (two years) and enjoy a host of other activities enjoying hula hooping in a relaxing environment. “We attracted a crowd of 120 in just Tippett says it is unlikely to be the last. our second Sunday, and those crowds “With the growing attendance, it would have been growing since.” be a shame not to bring it back. The second annual Cruise for a Change — Suicide Awareness fundraiser was held on Sunday to encourage car and motorbike enthusiasts to come together and fight against suicide whilst raising funds for charity. “We ended up at the Mag n Turbo show, and it was a great day out together,” says organiser Georgia Provis. The Rolleston resident established the event after a close friend took his own life nearly two years ago. “Everyone I know has lost at least one person to suicide including workmates, friends, or family members and I thought people do these kinds of cruises for other charities but not so many for mental health, so I created one. I didn’t know if it was a good or bad idea, but last year 1,000 people come along even though it was the same day as Bathurst and teeming down with rain.

We raised $2,500 for Lifeline and Youthline. “We want those who are struggling to be able to speak up and know it is ok to call for help. We appreciate the people who support our events — it is a really important topic. Funds raised on Sunday will go to Mental Health Advocacy and Peer Support, known as MAHPS. “Another cruise to Akaroa is planned for April, and we will host a big event later in the year Rangiora Showgrounds. VIA CHARACTER STRENGTHS READY TO FLOURISH

We already know that in education one size does not fit all so we promote learners having access to a wide range of wellbeing resources that we call our ‘Hauora Kete’. The contents in the Kete are taught to learners and staff in various ways across our learning programme. Some of the tools in our kete are:

CHARACTER STRENGTHS

According to the VIA Institute on Character (www.viacharacter.org), every individual possesses all 24 character strengths in different degrees, giving each person a unique character profile. Knowing your signature strengths is a tool that can help you through times of struggle. Knowing and growing your core strengths can also help you to flourish and build your wellbeing. At Rolleston College, all staff and Learners take the free online test and know their Character Profile. This is then applied to their learning and celebrated through Character Theme weeks and World Character Day. Character Strengths are also used in Goal Setting and can be a useful tool when restoring situations

MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is paying attention to our thoughts and feelings, learning to slow things down so we can react and see things more clearly. From 2017 the Pause, Breathe, Smile programme from the Mindfulness Education group was taught across whānau. This programme has clear links to the New Zealand curriculum and is also explored at some of our feeder schools. This means learners are coming to Rolleston College with an understanding of mindfulness practices and how it can help them with focus and learning. Through the 8 sessions in the programme our junior learners are able to engage in mindfulness practices and to understand how mindfulness can support their learning and achievement. In 2018 all staff spent the day with John Quinn who is the Director of Wellbeing and Positive Education at Christs’ College and has lead a 3 year implementation of positive education both in and out of the classroom. Rolleston College aims to further integrate mindfulness practices into our curriculum for senior learners to support their educational success.

TE WHARE TAPA WHA

This is a key wellbeing model that forms the foundation of our hauora practices. It recognises the four cornerstones of health. Should one of the dimensions be missing or damaged a person can become unbalance. The four pillars are: Taha Tinana (Physical Health) this is the capacity for growth and development; Taha Wairua (Spiritual Health) our capacity for faith and communication; Taha Whānau (Family Health) this is belonging, caring and sharing with family and wider society; Taha Hinengaro (Mental Health) this is to consider our thoughts, feelings and emotions. Learners start their year 9 journey developing an understanding of this model and create their own whare to support their understanding.

FIVE WAYS TO WELLBEING

The Mental Health Foundation promotes this as a key wellbeing tool. ‘5 ways’ includes Take Notice, Be Active, Keep Learning, Connect and Give. They are actions that can be incorporated into your life at any time. Some learners find this is an easy way in to understanding wellbeing.

CHECK AND CONNECT

This is a way of connecting with our learners on a daily basis and in all learning vehicles. There are a variety of ways that Check and Connect can operate — with the essential outcome being that all learners know that they have staff who care, are ready to help, and work together to create a flourishing learning environment. The learners can use and practice the tools from their kete, just as you would use and practice numerical skills.

Situated on the fertile soils alongside the Selwyn River the Chamberlains grow mostly daffodils, tulips and bluebells. “My sister and I are now the sixthgeneration on the farm, and we love being involved in the business and living in the district,” says Courtney. “At present we are in taking bulbs out of ground, washing, treating and grading them. “Some bulbs are stored in a coolroom for up to 12 weeks before planting to

At the height of harvesting, we have 35 people picking the flowers, and we supply approximately 30,000 bunches of daffodils to the Cancer Society each year.”

Hadstock Farm digs their bulbs yearly, and hot water treats them to kill any pests, which may have got on the plants. “Growing is an all year job and daffodils’ biggest enemy is the fly that lays maggots on the flower, and they burrow down and kill the bulbs. “We use blood and bone and make sure each bulb is planted twice the depth of the bulb. If they are good bulbs, they will grow well. If people are purchasing at a store, I suggest they give the bulbs a light squeeze before buying them to make sure they are not rotten.”

The right match of seed to soil

The company sell by mail order all around the country through the Hadstock Farm website and have an annual pick your own bucket of daffodils for $10 on the first weekend in September every year. “We love selling direct to the public because know our bulbs have been stored correctly — they should never be displayed out in the sun. “We enjoy helping people troubleshoot if they are having problems with their flowers as well. Due to current conditions we, at VetEnt, have been seeing some cases of thiamine deficiency in the area. It generally affects cattle between two and seven months old.

The daily requirements for thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, are fulfilled via production by rumen bacteria. Deficiency often occurs when calves are shifted from low quality to lush pastures high in carbohydrates. Diets high in sulphates, such as brassica crops can also cause a deficiency. With a change in the pasture, the rumen environment changes, which can cause the production of an enzyme that destroys thiamine before absorption. Lack in

B1 then causes the brain to swell, and death of brain tissue. Generally, only a few animals are affected. Signs are initially mild, with the calf tending to isolate and stop eating — this then progresses as the calf becomes wobbly and appears disorientated due to blindness. They may stagger and eventually collapse. Head pressing, twitching and shaking of muscles may be seen. Treatment needs to begin as soon as possible to halt damage to the brain — this

involves injecting B1 every 12 hours for around three to five days. Calves need to be kept well hydrated to avoid dehydration and in a safe paddock to avoid misadventure. Full recovery can occur after 24 hours; however, more severely affected calves may not recover or become permanently blind. Prevention involves measures such as transitioning slowly onto good quality feed and providing plenty of fibre with high carbohydrate diets. If feeding brassicas with sulphur, limiting feeding of this crop may be required.

Pets & Equine ADVERTORIAL

Are bones good for dogs? Feeding bones to dogs are generally believed to be a good thing. Gnawing on a bone is the best way to keep your dog’s teeth clean — and a great way to keep a dog occupied for a good long time. However, the choice of bone given is of utmost importance. Lean fresh meaty bones with minimal fat are best. These can include beef, venison or lamb long bones, and brisket bones are also good. They must be raw or smoked — cooked bones of any kind are more likely to fragment into sharp pieces. Never feed chicken bones to dogs, also avoid ribs and chop bones, and as mentioned above never feed cooked bones of any type. Most dogs cope fine with a bone; however, all dogs are different. Many dogs in rural areas are fed bones daily, and never have an issue with them. Other dogs can struggle and may suffer episodes of vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation after chewing on a bone. The high-fat content of bone marrow can in some dogs trigger pancreatitis, a potentially dangerous condition. If your dog is not used to having bones and your vet suggests trying, then perhaps offer

a bone for just five or ten minutes and then take it away and try again a day or two later. Avoid any sudden changes and if there are any problems just hold off. Once they are used to it, a bone once a month is good. Marrow bones can be full of fat, so factor this in if your dog is on a diet – to the extent that the day the dog has a bone, there is no other food offered to compensate. If your dog cannot cope with bones, then there are many commercially available products that can be good to chew on and effective at keeping teeth clean. These include Veggiedents, Greenies and many, many others. Then the gold standard for keeping dogs’ teeth clean and healthy — daily brushing. Nowhere near as daunting as it sounds. There are small thimble type brushes for small dogs, and chicken flavour toothpaste helps too. In conclusion — bones are good if your dog can cope with them, and keeping teeth clean is of paramount importance.

Call 0800 Sunshine (786 744) or email us at info@sunshinesolar.co.nz After 14 years of looking at customers power bills Sunshine Solar have realised that Electricity companies have not been transparent in their pricing and consumers bills have been higher than necessary so we decided to invest in creating our own power company. So this year YES Power was born to serve the people of Canterbury.

In late 2017, YES Power was born from the desire to bring affordable and transparent electricity services to the people of Canterbury. YES stands for Your Electricity Supplier. Did you know that the five largest electricity companies in New Zealand have control of 93% of the market, and most of these are 51% owned by the New Zealand government?
