p This year’s Sheffield Rugby Club’s mountain bike race attracted a record number of cyclists, boosted for the first time by 15 entrants who chose to run the race. Event organiser Tom Fergusson said they ran the event under perfect conditions. Ollie Peace, won the men’s cycle race, breaking the course record by four seconds in a time of one hour four minutes and 33 seconds. Katie Symons won the women’s race in a time of one hour 25 minutes and 37 seconds. K Docherty won the men’s run and Bex Mclean the women’s. The event raised $7,000 for the Sheffield Rugby Club’s and Sheffield Cricket Club’s junior sides.“We will definitely have it again next year,” Mr Fergusson said.

Control returned to Christchurch A major milestone has been achieved in the Canterbury recovery, with Christchurch City Council being given back control over their district planning process. “I am a strong believer that the best future for Christchurch is one where we return to local leadership over the future of our city,” says minister, Megan Woods. “Following the earthquakes, special emergency planning processes were implemented that suspended certain RMA processes in the interest of speed and certainty during the rebuild. I am proud to announce that we are returning the planning powers to the council, marking a real return to local leadership. “It is a sign of how far we have come in Canterbury. As we approach the eighth anniversary of the February 22

earthquake, we are now able to return to the same planning processes that other cities use. It is a powerful signal that Christchurch is moving out of its rebuild phase and looking to its future as New Zealand’s thriving second city. “This change is achieved through the revocation of the Canterbury Earthquake (Christchurch Replacement District Plan) Order 2014, which will take effect from March 18. The order was due to expire on June 30 2021 on the expiry of the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Act 2016. We

have been able to meet that milestone over two years ahead of schedule — this is a great sign of momentum in our regeneration.” The Christchurch City Council can now revert to normal planning processes to manage its District Plan, marking a significant step in the transition back to local leadership. “It means that people, along with the council, will be able to initiate changes to the District Plan. They will be able to submit on proposed changes, attend hearings and participate in proposing amendments.” 

Farmers’ national accolades u by Ann van Engelen

The West Melton Young Farmers club helps to connect young people in Canterbury and has won the national club membership award after quadrupling its membership.

p Chris Foster, West Melton Young Farmers club secretary with Hannah Cameron, a Young Farmers board member

The club was presented the award for membership growth after beating almost 80 other NZ Young Farmers clubs as part of the AGMARDT NZ Young Farmers Conference. “We are stoked to have won. It is the result of hard work by the club’s former and current executive,” said secretary Chris Foster. “Several years ago the club only had four or five members and now has a growing membership of approximately 20 people. We are all astounded that we have managed to expand so rapidly. Rebecca Legat and Laura Shaw have helped lead the turnaround.” Chris is an apprentice auto electrician, who grew up on an arable farm near Kirwee. “Our members come from a broad range of professions, and one of our mottos is that you don’t have to be a farmer to get involved.” West Melton Young Farmers credits a number of factors to its success, including organising an annual ploughing competition, which attracts up to 200 people. “We are really visible in the community and are always doing lots of fun, social activities including regular pot luck dinners at members’ homes, and it is great when we get to check out different farms. “We also organise trips like go-karting and paintball, or just catching up at the

pub. They are a great way for people to switch off from work for a bit.” Chris’s tips to turn a club around and increase membership are simple. “If your club is struggling to grow its membership, reach out to your regional executive, they are always willing to offer useful advice. We have also found it beneficial to speak with past members and older people in the community.” The club alternates its monthly meetings between Rolleston and Darfield. ¢

A special place u by Mike Isle

Selwyn has a special haven that provides a safe and fun learning environment for children and teenagers struggling with high anxiety, low self-esteem and lack of confidence. The Buddy Zone is the brainchild of behavioural consultant Dawn Wilson who developed the idea after working with children with social deficits in the United Kingdom and New Zealand after her arrival here 15 years ago. She said the concept for an after-school programme that would help children with social anxiety by offering a “zone” where they could be welcomed, relaxed and non-judged had been germinating for some time but was thrust into sharp relief by the Christchurch earthquakes. “After the earthquakes struck most of my work as a behavioural consultant was working with children with social anxieties. There was a huge workload, and that was when I decided that I needed to do more than one-on-one teaching. That is how the concept of a Buddy Zone started where I could work with more children, and they could enjoy the social interaction with others.” Mrs Wilson said she started her first Buddy Zone in Christchurch two years ago and the second, in Rolleston, 15 months ago. At each zone, students take part in a one-hour structured

small group session each week. The sessions include social games, interactive group activities and simple daily life skills. There are zones within the zone. The Buddy Zone Junior Crew, which caters to children age six to 12 years is in both Rolleston and Christchurch; and there is a Teen Zone for 13 to 16-year-olds, which is only in Christchurch at present. Mrs Wilson said that since she started her Buddy Zone in Rolleston, she and her team of teacher-aids had seen 30 children either complete the programme or continue in it. The parent of one of those children said she had seen significant improvements in the behaviour of her son since he started the programme. “The difference in his ability to interact with others, understand and relate to his peers and the excitement of participating every week, has been a great reflection on the programme offered by Dawn and her team,” she said. Government needs to act u by Amy Adams, Selwyn MP

Back in 2017, the National government announced the roll-out of digital monitoring and cameras across the commercial fishing industry. Cameras were to be phased into each fishery from October 1 2018. However, in late 2018 the current government delayed the roll-out of cameras on commercial fishing boats, and we have still seen no action. Fisheries minister Stuart Nash has indicated that his cabinet colleagues are not convinced of the merits of the cameras. It is code for New Zealand First ministers (who received substantial donations from the fishing industry during the last election) now acting to block the introduction of cameras on commercial fishing vessels. That is concerning given the evidence and support from the Department of Conservation that cameras would make a difference in protecting our endangered marine mammals and birds. Recently Fisheries New Zealand said it had received two reports from commercial fishers about rare Hector’s dolphins being caught off the East Coast of the South Island this summer.

The reality of the industry has too often meant that what happens at sea has been out of sight. If we don’t measure something, we have no real way of knowing the scale of the problem and how to manage it. If rolled-out fully as National proposed, digital monitoring would help revolutionise the way New Zealand’s commercial fisheries are managed and monitored. We have the opportunity to have one of the most transparent and accountable commercial fisheries in the world and to help ensure the sustainability of our fisheries for generations to come. It is very disappointing that despite the Green Party’s rhetoric about being the champion for conservation, they are seemingly powerless to get the rest of government to agree to proceed with these simple, practical measures that would save our endangered sea mammals and seabirds.

Successful environmental performance u by Mike Isle

Looking after the environment is an essential part of Selwyn dairy farmer Tony Dodunski’s philosophy. A recent independent check shows he’s well on the way towards achieving sustainable farming in a challenging area. Tony has been rated ‘A’ for his farm environment plan audit by Environment Canterbury. He’s also achieving his production goals. Tony and his wife Clare, a doctor, bought their 190ha farm next to Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere two years ago. To start with, they thought that under Environment Canterbury’s tightening environmental regulations, it would be too difficult to comply as well as make a profit. They needed to be within half an hour of Christchurch Hospital so Clare could commute to work. A land agent persuaded them to view the property next to the lake in the Selwyn Te Waihora Cultural Landscape Values Management Area’s Phosphorus and Sediment Risk Zone. Dairy farms here must have a nitrogen budget, and those leaching more than 15kg of nitrogen a hectare each year are required to cut this by 30 per cent by 2022. Tony said the property’s previous owner was a very good farmer who had fenced off drains, planted flax and put in

He built a 700-cow concrete feed pad to get cows off wet pasture quickly. As well as meeting his environmental targets, Tony is hitting the production mark too. This year, with 660 cows, production so far is up 16 per cent and on target to achieve 280,000 kgs. His ‘A’ audit result shows he’s well on the way towards environmentallyfriendly farming. ¢

Children’s Day this Sunday

u by Mike Isle

This coming Sunday, March 3 is Children’s Day NZ and families everywhere are being encouraged to treasure their children and put tamariki first. Local charitable organisation Selwyn Parenting Network Inc (SPN) is again celebrating the day by hosting its free flagship annual Children’s Day event from Foster Park. It is a community event that organisers say celebrates not only this nationally recognised day but also provides an opportunity for Selwyn families and communities to come together and connect. Kate Webb, the coordinator for SPN, is delighted with the response once again received from within the Selwyn community. “There is a sense of belonging for all, and this is underpinned by the strong community collaborations that SPN continues to grow within the Selwyn region. We are starting to see more Selwyn communities align with one another and work collaboratively. Growing upon this is critical to the role we all play in strengthening families.” Featuring a wide range of fun entertainment from inflatables for different ages, archery, pony rides and a short double-decker bus ride around Rolleston through to interactive activities, stage performances, competitions and more, the SPN Children’s Day event is aimed at bringing fun and joy to all. “Everything is free, ensuring that no one misses out. It truly is a day to celebrate our tamariki and remember that childhood is a precious time; one that should be treasured,” said Webb. “This Children’s Day we have

Triathlon series final leg u by Mike Isle

The 2019 Frontrunner Lake Crichton Triathlon Series winds up this Friday with the third and final event for the year. The event, run by the Selwyn Sports Trust, historically attracts a diverse field of athletes to Lake Crichton a world-class man-made events venue near Dunsandel, and this year is no exception said trust chief executive, Michael Wilson. “A major goal of the series is to be an event for first-timers, and it is really pleasing seeing people’s confidence grow over the course of the series.” Mr Wilson said the first two legs of the series had seen a large range of athletes, young and old, test themselves. “The series is a very welcoming environment for those new to the

sport, and we encourage families and friends to come along and support the competitors. We try to make it a great family time. “The Frontrunner series is a great advertisement for our sport and the Selwyn district.” Mr Wilson said the Friday evening series allows for all competitors, young and old, experienced and first timers, to finish their working week with a race. Entrants can enter individually or in a team. Race time starts at 6.30pm, Friday, March 1 at 1141 Frasers Rd, Dunsandel. ¢

Rolleston township was established in 1866 and named after the last superintendent of Canterbury, William Rolleston who was born in Yorkshire in 1831. He also served as a Member of Parliament, holding various cabinet portfolios. The town served as a major railway junction point from the 1880s until the late 1980s when the New Zealand government deregulated the railways. Rolleston then became a stop only for the tourist-oriented TranzAlpine rail service. Radiata pine plantations were once a significant feature of the area but have been replaced by more waterintensive grazing land for the dairy industry. In the 70s it was labelled ‘the town of the future’, and up until 1990, the town had a few sealed streets and a population of just under 1,000. With a population of approximately 16,250 in the June 2018 census, and as the largest town in the Selwyn District Rolleston is considered a satellite town of Christchurch City, making it New Zealand’s 27th largest urban area. Today Rolleston is becoming a thriving community with new developments happening and many residents relocating to the area to escape the main city after the earthquakes. With

the country’s youngest mayor at the helm, Sam Broughton has no doubt seen many changes taking place as the small town grows in popularity. There are medical and daycare centres, cafes, shops and schools to support Rolleston’s population. The town has become many people’s

Toastmasters comes to Rolleston u by Mike Isle

The international organisation that proclaims it is where leaders are made, has 357,000 members globally, and is represented in 143 countries, has come to Rolleston and is looking for new members. Toastmasters International’s Rolleston Club is still in its infancy and has only four confirmed meetings but, according to president Ellen Cust the numbers are growing with every meeting, and members of other clubs are visiting to swell the numbers and the knowledge base. Ms Cust said there are good reasons to join Toastmasters and its dictum Where Leaders are Made, is well deserved. “We help people from more diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators and leaders,” she said. Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking, is one of the most common fears people have and is believed to affect up to 75 per cent of the population. Ms Cust says Toastmasters can help. “Toastmasters is exciting, flexible and a supportive environment offering real-world transferrable skills. It offers the opportunity to build up 300 unique competencies and 11 specialised learning paths. “Our members come from diverse backgrounds such as the Defence Force, single parents, home executives and teachers. Everybody is welcome.”

Rolleston gets the connection

DARFIELD

Rolleston leads the way when it comes to uptake of fibre broadband connectivity, according to figures released by network provider Enable. According to Enable, almost 70 per cent of Rolleston’s homes and businesses are connected to the fibre network, making the town the most connected community in or around Christchurch, and one of the most connected in New Zealand. Rolleston, at 69% connectivity, is closely followed by Wigram (67%), Halswell (57%) and Lincoln (55%). Enable’s chief executive, Steve Fuller, said people no longer accept their broadband connection limiting their ability to enjoy the proliferation of online entertainment services like Netflix, Lightbox and Neon. “Approximately 27,000 customers connected to fibre broadband during 2018 our busiest year for connecting customers ever. It’s clear that more and more people are realising that they need the very best broadband service in their home, in order to ensure that their online experience is never interrupted,” Mr

Fuller said. “Having a super-fast, ultrareliable broadband connection will be even more important in 2019 with the coverage for several leading sports moving to internet-based streaming.”

Enable’s fibre broadband network covers Christchurch and the surrounding towns, and the company finished 2018 with almost 90,000 customers connected to its network. ¢

The power of three u by Andy Bryenton

100

Kawasaki is no stranger to beating the competition with more power. On the road, their sports bikes are second to none when it comes to laying down horsepower in a game of superlative numbers. Winning hearts and minds in the rural backcountry take a different skill set. That’s why the key number for the new Kawasaki Mule Pro FXR isn’t in the hundreds or thousands — it’s the number three.

It all begins with a three-cylinder 812cc liquid cooled engine. More cylinders mean smooth power delivery, and Kawasaki are the masters of the triple layout — bike fans will remember the 500cc Kawasaki Triple two-stroke from 1968, and the walloping power to weight ratio of that machine. While this is a four-stroke engine, and fuel injected, the advantages are similar, and the legacy carries across to this new platform and new purpose, mated to a CVT box with both high and low ratios and reverse. Rather than speed, the Mule is all about torque and the power to perform in rough terrain. It can tow more than 900kgs and pack 450 into its own generously sized flatbed. Carrying capacity reveals another incidence of the magic number three. The Mule Pro FXR can seat not two but three occupants in comfort, carrying an entire work crew where they need to go. An extra pair of hands is nice, but many, as they say, make light work.

p Triple threat — the Kawasaki Mule packs in an extra crew member for those big tasks and excursions

Think about what could be accomplished with three experienced workers and all those hundreds of kilos of tools and equipment. Now imagine that capacity deployed pretty much anywhere on the farm. This go-anywhere capability, is enhanced by a wide stance for stability even on sloping terrain, and a shorter wheelbase for agility and a tiny turning

circle. With a two metre wheelbase, the Mule Pro FXR can turn within just a hair more than four metres. That’s tight, and it makes it easier to access hard to reach places — not only in the field but in the barn or the yard as well. Kawasaki will be bringing their new Mule to field days, so stop by and take a look at what promises to be a truly hard-working machine on the farm. ¢

Auto & Marine

Grown up strong by Andy Bryenton

Ford has some big names in their catalogue, which evoke memories of great vehicles past. Many of those names — like Mustang — continue to carry on into the present with acclaimed new iterations. The firm which gave us such automotive archetypes as the Mondeo, the Transit van, and the gone-but-never-forgotten Falcon is keen to establish new dynasties as well. That’s why the advent of the latest — 21st anniversary — Ford Focus is a coming of age. When the original Focus was released, its revolutionary features were its ride and handling, and to an extent, the styling as well. Remember, this was still the 1990s, and the car the Focus was replacing was the Escort. Just how different was it? Well, the world took notice, and doubly so when Colin McRae piloted a specially tuned rally version to victory. An RS model packing a two-litre engine set the stage for more performance Focus models to come. Now the 2019 Focus is in showrooms, and it’s a chance to look back at how far not just this one medium sized car has come, but what it means for the auto trade in general. As one of the most popular Fords, and with Ford a global brand, it’s a useful yardstick for comparison and what we see immediately is that technology has advanced immensely from the 1998 Focus to its 21st birthday generation. Under the hood, Ford has pushed EcoBoost engine design even further than with their multi-award-winning

single litre unit. Now rounded out to 1.5 litres, this economical power plant delivers a crisp response, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new Focus is built in Germany, a nation famous for precision engineering, and many of the electronic features on this new Ford would once only have been available on luxury cars from

other German brands. These include adaptive cruise control, a pedestrian and cyclist sensing emergency braking safety system, and even the ability to shut down a cylinder of the engine under low torque demand such as highway cruising, for even greater economy. Of course, there’s a full suite of information and entertainment options,

aircon and a big touchscreen. That’s a whole lot of innovation on the inside — and the best news is, the new Focus looks great on the outside too, with Ford’s now trademark aggressive diamondcut grille, and swooping creases which accentuate some clever aerodynamics. Twenty-one years old, and all grown up. Happy birthday, Ford Focus! ¢
