The new 2.3km track will appeal to riders of all abilities and complements existing tracks in the neighbouring Craigieburn Range, which have been garnering international attention. Porters summer activities coordinator, Jason Collins, said the opening of the new track is part of their drive to make the Porters area a year round visitor experience. “With the development of the Porters Lodge below the ski field, we now have the facilities for people to stay on-site and enjoy what there is to offer, both in the winter and now in the summer. The

benefit of the lodge being operational all year round means we can also provide full time employment for more of our staff who can work on the ski field in the winter; then assist with the running of the lodge and the mountain bike track in the summer.” Mr Collins said the lodge, which can accommodate up to 39 people in group or family rooms, provides a base for riders wanting to explore the other mountain bike tracks in the region. “People can stay here, ride our track, then use the lodge as a base to try the other tracks in the Craigieburn and Castle Hill area. “We are running a

shuttle bus with a bike trailer, which can take people staying at the lodge to other tracks in the region.” Selwyn mayor, Sam Broughton, a keen mountain bike rider himself, is delighted at the new development at the Porters Ski Area. “It is a great addition to the region and complements tracks that are already operating in the area,” Mayor Broughton said. “The quality of the trails on offer is attracting visitors not only from New Zealand, but also internationally. continued on page 3 …

The programme’s coordinator and one of its two facilitators, Kate Walkinshaw, said the programme, Incredible Years, was a great way for parents to meet and share ideas and ways of managing the ups and downs of parenting children during their most formative years. Mrs Walkinshaw said parents come together for two and a half hours each week over the 14 week programme and learn new ways to help promote their children’s social and problemsolving skills. “The programme addresses such challenges as aggressiveness, ongoing tantrums and acting out behaviour,” she said. “Parents have stated that the Incredible Years parenting programme has supported them with more skills in their toolbox, and to develop a culture of encouragement and positive praise. “That spending time to play with children, is very important and supports the child’s social and emotion coaching.” The next Incredible Years programme begins on Monday, March 12 and is held

Heritage awards Organisers of the Canterbury Heritage Awards are calling on Selwyn individuals and groups involved in heritage restoration to get their entries in for this year’s awards.

THE FUTURE

Planting a billion trees in ten years is a huge challenge. The government’s aim is long term – for employment and climate change targets decades into the future. Today’s children will get the rewards when they are grown up. The new trees could add 500,000 hectares to New Zealand’s established 1.7 million hectares of plantation forests. That land is our contribution already. We’ll produce 32 million cubic metres of logs for timber this year and we replant the land after we harvest. We look forward to sharing; with government, iwi and farmers, all of the great future which comes with growing trees. Let’s plant.

Kea crossing improves safety The safety of children walking to school in West Melton has been improved with the opening of a ‘kea’ crossing alongside the primary school on Weedons Ross Road.

 Senior students from West Melton Primary School have been trained to operate the new kea crossing on Weedons Ross Road

Kea crossings are operated by trained patrollers, along with an adult supervisor, and have the ability to stop traffic using barrier arms. Patrollers are taught how to find a safe gap in the traffic flow to swing the stop arms out into, to hold the pedestrians until traffic has stopped, and to release pedestrians to cross once the path is clear. Senior students from the school trained as road patrollers with school community officer Constable Rick Groen recently. West Melton Primary School principal, Sue Jackson, said the patrollers learnt how to safely operate the newly installed

and much awaited kea crossing to ensure their fellow students and caregivers get across the busy road safely. She said the kea crossing was an opportunity for students to be involved in the community with leadership responsibilities. “We are delighted to endorse our Safe School Travel Plan by supporting our students in their leadership roles as road patrol monitors, ensuring the safety of the school community as they cross the now busy Weedons Ross Road.” The kea crossing and footpath extension north on Weedons Ross Road complete the recent shopping centre landscaping and school frontage development. 

Local chair of Youth Voice Canterbury

ADVERTORIAL

Barking up the right tree

A former student of Darfield High has been elected chairperson of Youth Voice Canterbury.

With a wonderfully evocative name, and a selection of delicious, wholesome treats matched up with aromatic coffee, there’s a whole menu of reasons to stop by the Fat Beagle in Darfield for a late summer breakfast, brunch, lunch — well, any excuse will do!

Nineteen-year-old Emily de Rooy is the former chairperson of the Selwyn Youth Council, and sees her new position as the opportunity to extend her youth work throughout Canterbury. “Youth Voice Canterbury is network of young people aged from 12 to 24 that gives young people the opportunity to network and connect,” she said. “I have always looked up to Youth Voice Canterbury and my goal was to share in the work they were doing in the community. “Of the many good aspects of Youth Voice’s work that it doesn’t help just young people; one of its aims is to help other organisations working with youth — to promote youth awareness, from a young person’s perspective.” Emily, who is also a second year university student studying for a bachelor of commerce, said she had a busy year ahead of her. However, her immediate priority is helping organise South Island Youth Connect 2018, a series of workshops, training and discussions bringing together youth groups from throughout the South Island. South Island Youth Connect 2018 will be held in April in Kaiapoi. “It is a tremendous event, now into its

Mention beagles and most folks think of Charles Schultz’ beloved Snoopy, but the dogs in charge at this funky local eatery are big Norm and little Poppy. For the record, neither is particularly rotund, but their human friends and visitors are certainly thrown in the way of temptation when they see the spread of slices, cakes, freshly baked cheese scones, and even bagels made on site. There’s a definite theme to the food here, though — real, natural goodness. Raw and tasty ingredients come together thanks to the artistry of the Fat Beagle team, and even a quick look at their Facebook gallery is enough to get the mouth watering. Envision peach and cashew salad, raw ginger oat slice, elaborately decorated cakes fit for a royal high tea, and plenty more packed with the freshest local fruit and vegetables. Of course, all of this is backed up by coffee, which combines the sensory vivacity of the roasted bean with a little molecular gastronomy. That’s not rocket science — it means that alongside classics like the good old flat white you’ll also find blends from the famous Latte Lab, and ice cold coffees to beat the summer heat. Consistent excellence is the goal, and coffee lovers will tell you they’re hitting their target. If you’re a true lover of the ‘beans of life’, this is your temple. Combine a laid-back atmosphere with an ever-changing menu and a wealth of options for those who are gluten free, vegetarian or paleo-inspired, and you’ve got the recipe for your new go-to location

Treating soil like dirt

The way we are treating our soil will be the subject of this year’s Kim Hill Hot Topic debate to be held in Lincoln.

 by Kent Caddick

Hot air balloons are set to light up the night sky over Hororata as part of a new community event being organised by the founders of the highly successful annual Hororata Highland Games.

 Kim Hill hosts a previous Hot Topic debate at Lincoln University

 Hot air ballooning at night will be the feature of the Hororata Night Glow event

To be held in April the Hororata Night Glow event, organised by the Hororata Community Trust, will be a spectacular festival: with hot air balloons lighting up the night sky, music, the best food and wine the Selwyn district has on offer, crafts stalls and heaps of family entertainment. “The Hororata Night Glow has already captured people’s imagination with more than 12,000 following the festival on Facebook,” Hororata Community Trust executive officer, Cindy Driscoll said. “Hot air balloons have a certain magic that intrigues young and old, to see them ‘glowing’ in unison to music is a rare and exciting opportunity. “While the balloons are the headline act of the Hororata Night Glow, the autumn festival surrounding their performance will offer a whole range of entertainment, making this a great afternoon out.” There will be musical entertainment including: Holly Kimber, Volts and The Easy Hearts. Inflatable mini golf and springfree trampolines will both be free for children to play on, while archery and other activities are planned. “Food is going to be a big focus of the Hororata Night Glow,” Ms Driscoll said.

“We will have a huge range of street food on offer. We are also working with the Selwyn District Council to have the ‘Sensational Selwyn Food and Wine trail’ at the event, where people can sample the best our district has to offer.” The Hororata Night Glow will be held on Saturday, April 28 at the Hororata Domain, from 3pm to 8.30pm. 

The annual debate is coordinated by Lincoln Envirotown and this year’s subject is ‘Soil — are we treating it like dirt?’. This year’s event will be the eighth of its kind and will be held on Thursday, March 22 at the Stewart Lecture Theatre at Lincoln University from 6.30pm, with the debate getting under way at 7.30pm. Lincoln Envirotown project manager, Dave Fitzjohn, said well-known radio personality, Kim Hill, will once again host the event, which as usual is on a subject of national and global environmental significance.

“With some scientists stating that Britain may have as few as 60 harvests worth of soil left, and desertification occurring in many parts of the world, it is clear that we cannot be complacent about our soil,” Mr Fitzjohn said. “This is always a stimulating and thought-provoking evening, which is enhanced by a question time at which those attending can ask questions of the panellists and thereby join the discussion.” People may register for the event at eventbrite.co.nz or simply turn up on the evening. A $5 koha is requested with refreshments provided. 

Children’s Day also a birthday party  by Kent Caddick

The Selwyn Parenting Network will officially mark its fifth birthday with a Children’s Day event in Rolleston this Sunday. The free community event for Selwyn families, caregivers and children will be held for the first time at Foster Park on Sunday, March 4, with previous events at Rolleston Domain. The Selwyn Parenting Network (SPN) became an incorporated society five years ago and while its actual fifth birthday was back in November, SPN chose to mark the milestone date on Children’s Day. SPN coordinator Kate Webb said each year Children’s Day, which is held on the first Sunday of March, provides New Zealanders with an opportunity to celebrate and give time to children. “This has proved to be the perfect day for Selwyn Parenting Network to put on its flagship annual free event and provide an opportunity for families, and communities to celebrate and nurture our children. “The day is as much a celebration of children, as an opportunity to engage all of New Zealand to think about their responsibility to support the lives of tamariki in their communities. And this year, we get to showcase the fabulous new park facilities through hosting our event at Foster Park.” She said SPN was established with a vision to create strong, connected, confident and caring families, whanau

and communities in Selwyn. “With its charitable not-for-profit status, SPN provides effective collaboration between a wide range of specific community groups and parenting organisations, to enhance the well-being of families and strengthen communities. “We have a very strong and varied knowledge base within our dedicated team of volunteers, committee and part-time staff, all of whom create an incredible infrastructure of connected resources for parents and caregivers. “We are all parents ourselves, with first-hand experience of the need to reach out for specific advice, support, guidance and help across a broad spectrum of parenting needs, from birth right through to parenting young adults. “We have forged incredibly strong working partnerships with some of the best providers in our Selwyn District, and are able to signpost many parents to these extraordinary organisations and resources.” The SPN flagship Children’s Day event has proved to be a popular celebration over the years, providing all communities in Selwyn with an opportunity to come together and enjoy a range of free activities and entertainment, including free bouncy castles, sausage sizzles,

The 2018 Lake Crichton Series, run by the Selwyn Sports Trust, is a three race series utilising the world-class, man-made Lake Crichton on Frasers Road, near Dunsandel. Trust chief executive, Michael Wilson, said the first two races of the Frontrunner Lake Crichton Series have been a fantastic advertisement for the Selwyn district. “Conditions have been as good as we could have hoped and we have seen a large range of athletes test themselves on the course together,” Mr Wilson said.

“It has been really cool seeing a mix of returning athletes from previous years and first time entrants, as well as the range of experience levels too. “A major goal of the series is to be an event for first timers and it is really pleasing seeing people’s confidence grow over the course of the series.” Mr Wilson said they would like to thank Chris and Robyn Wright for the use of Lake Crichton and the numerous volunteers and supporters who make it such a success. 

Progress towards new Rolleston town centre  by Mike Isle

Selwyn District Council is well under way with planning for the first major development in Rolleston’s new town centre. The centrepiece project for the town centre is the new Rolleston Library and community centre, which will be located on what is currently part of Rolleston Reserve, in Tennyson Street. It will replace the existing library, which is now too small for Rolleston’s and the district’s growing population — and will provide a flexible, multi-use space for a wide range of community purposes. Selwyn mayor, Sam Broughton, said community spaces and libraries are changing. “We want our new facility to be a place of learning, idea sharing, culture and exploration. “The new facility will include a library, but will be about more than just books. It will also offer flexible multipurpose spaces for activities and exhibitions, performances, learning programmes and music. We want our community to have a place to meet, reflect and be entertained.” The council recently undertook consultation with residents on ideas for the new centre, and will be reporting

back on community feedback soon. Construction will start later this year, and the facility is scheduled to open in 2019. The Rolleston Town Centre Masterplan was adopted by the Council in 2014, after an extensive community consultation and planning process. The plan sets out a vision for a town centre that will be a vibrant and engaging destination for Rolleston, Selwyn Central ward and the wider Selwyn district. Since the Rolleston Town Centre Masterplan was adopted, a number of steps have been completed to progress the development including: roading projects such as the Tennyson/Kidman Streets roundabout, the development of Foster Park, adoption of the Land Use

Recovery Plan designating the town centre as a key activity area, and the statutory Reserve Exchange process to enable redevelopment of part of the existing reserve. Alongside the library and community centre project, the council is currently undertaking preliminary work to identify opportunities for retail and hospitality areas, and bringing together a design team to oversee the development. The council says the town centre will set the standard for later elements including: reserve, open spaces and playgrounds, town square and civic space, indoor/outdoor dining and hospitality, retail and entertainment areas, pedestrian-friendly streets and spaces. 

Relay for Life in Rolleston

LIFESTYLE DENTURES

Rolleston will once again host the Selwyn Relay for Life. This year’s event is being held at Brookside Park in Rolleston over the weekend of March 17 and 18. Relay for Life is a community fundraising event, which brings people together to celebrate with those who have overcome cancer and to remember loved ones lost to cancer, while raising funds for the Canterbury-West Coast Division of the Cancer Society. Chairman of the organising committee for the Rolleston event, Duncan Sole, said they have a number of teams entered already, but always need more, as this is a very important fundraising event for the Christchurch and Selwyn area. “We are very proud that last year for the first time we ran the event with no invoices thanks to a long list of very kind sponsors, which means every cent donated goes directly to the Cancer Society to use and to provide support to cancer patients and their families in the Selwyn area.” Relay For Life is an overnight relay event. Teams must take turns to keep their baton moving around the track for the entire 20 hour event. However, it’s not a race as Relay for Life is about team spirit and working

together to keep the baton moving. Relay For Life opens with the Survivors’ Lap, where cancer survivors walk the first lap of the relay to celebrate their survivorship. Once all the survivors have finished their lap of honour, relay teams begin their 20 hour walk and survivors head to a special afternoon tea. As dusk falls the Candlelight Ceremony is held to remember the loved ones lost to cancer. Candle bags, decorated in memory of lost loved ones, line the track and the lit candles inside each bag light the way for teams, as they continue to walk through the night. After 20 hours of walking, teams come together for the closing ceremony to

celebrate the end of Relay For Life and thank the community for their support and commitment. All funds raised through Relay For Life stay in the Canterbury-West Coast region and assist the Cancer Society to provide supportive care for cancer patients, their carers, whanau and friends, as well as funding cancer research and providing the public with information on the ways to reduce the risk of cancer through a smoke free, sunsmart, healthy lifestyle. IF IT’S MADE OF

With over eight million hitting the road since its debut back in the swinging sixties, the Ford Transit van has become one of those brand names like ‘sellotape’ which define a whole concept. The real deal, however, has continued to evolve with automotive technology, becoming a comfortable and very competent cargo mover with a few neat surprises up its sleeve. Now in its fourth very successful generation, the Ford Transit comes in an array of optional configurations, which make it easy to customize for different applications. Courier drivers may love its low loading height and sliding side doors, while engineers opt for double doors on the rear, and those moving whole pallets of goods jump in for a super-high roof and more internal space. Long or short wheelbase, there’s room for everything you need on the job in here, and smart ways to carry it — for example, super-long pipes or ladders can be stowed partially under the passenger seats. Standard boards of timber fit in either upright or stacked. And there’s ample space, with up to 8.29 metres of cargo-friendly, flat deck for your convenience. All of this — and all those door options, tie-downs and mounting points for boxes and tools — is only south of the cabin, though. Up front, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in one of Ford’s other models, because gone is

the day of the strictly utilitarian work van. In both comfort, connectivity, visibility and handling, this van is a match for modern SUVs, and was even suggested as a better alternative to the current crop of European sports utilities on Amazon’s hit car show The Grand Tour. Why? Well, they weren’t just poking fun at the SUV makers — the Ford Transit really is that comfy on long drives. And an economical engine provides 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres fuel economy — refreshing and surprising

for such a large working machine. Ford have thrown down the gauntlet and stated their intent to become the world’s top seller of light commercials. Having dusted off the competition in the ute sector, it’s time to consider Ford’s versatile and evergreen van range. The applications and combinations are endless, so your best bet is to talk to your Ford dealer. They can put together the perfect combo of power, comfort, access and space to tailor a Transit to your needs. 

Touring unplugged

COALGATE

MOTORS LTD

 by Andy Bryenton

Kia managed to shock and surprise everybody last year with the arrival of the speedy, slick and dynamically impressive Stinger, their answer to the best of Europe’s grand tourers. Now they’re back to surprise the world again, with a touring machine of a whole different stripe. Enter the Kia Niro, a combination of some of the hottest trends in modern motoring, and a definite one to watch. When looking at the Niro without context, it’s easy to assume that the Korean automakers simply wanted something small, compact and sports utility shaped to fit into their range between the quirky Soul and the popular Sportage. In an era when even Range Rover has a ‘crossover’ and the Toyota CH-R is the new Corolla, it makes sense. But that’s not what the Niro is all about. Sure, it’s got that nifty ‘fun size’ sports utility shape, the same voluminous cabin with clever cubbies and storage spaces, the same higher driving position and nice safety features. But it’s also a plug-in hybrid. With Elon Musk at the door and the mass production of Tesla cars at hand — soon — the addition of a crossover hybrid hits all the zeitgeist buttons. This particular combination of internal combustion and voltage power means that you can drive for 55 kilometres without using a drop of the go-juice, and even on the open highway you’ll sip a mere 1.4 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s a sum measured in the change

under the seat. However, the Niro doesn’t fall into that other trap of frugal hybrids — it’s not boring. In eco mode it may seem a touch leisurely, but hit sport and all 140 horsepower comes out to play. It’s no supercar, but it’s grininducing, especially as the electric motor joins in much like an old school turbo used to, kicking in a surge of added fizz. The dual clutch six-speed box keeps it

smooth, while the twin power systems do their thing. Arriving here in March, the plug-in Niro will join a pair of full-time hybrids in what is becoming a very interesting Kia range indeed. For those who are more concerned with the cutting edge than the prestige of a label, this is where the smart money sits. 

Showhomes & Renovations

A little goes a long way Building or renovating can feel like a daunting task, but by following a few simple guidelines, it won’t be long before you are reaping the rewards. Managing the risks around building and renovating means doing a bit of homework before diving in head first. This can seem like a tiresome task, but will pay off in the long run, and takes some of the pressure off the professionals if you know what you are doing. If you plan to do any structural building including: new buildings, additions, alterations, accessory buildings — sheds if bigger than 10m2 — and

repiling then you need to familiarise yourself with the regulations around building, and the processes involved. This also goes for any plans that involve: plumbing and drainage, fireplaces, ventilation and air conditioning systems, siteworks for a building, retaining walls higher than 1.5 metres, or retaining walls with a building or driveway near the top, fences higher than 2.5 metres and any swimming pool fence, swimming pools and decks Save time and money by utilising farm saved seed. Seed treatment is your first line of defence against pests and disease. Operating a high capacity gravity table to increase quality for re-sowing and contract specifications Mobile trailer with indent cylinders for fine cleaning and length separation with cereals or rye grass. Twin rotor screening machine with aspiration for screening all types of seeds for contract specs. Contracting available or FOR DRY HIRE.

more than 1.5 metres from ground level. With every new build or alteration you will need to meet certain standards, even if you are only altering part of a building. The council will not grant a building consent for an alteration to an existing building unless they are satisfied that the means of escape from fire, and access and facilities for people with disabilities have been considered where applicable. It pays to check with the council in the early stages of your planning. Some of

Groundwork make a point of having strong working relationships with customers and sub contractors. They appreciate our high standards and innovative ideas. the most common complications when working on an existing building, can be not being able to find the original plans or not having plans for what actually exists. If you plan on doing the work yourself, a little planning goes a long way and be prepared for changes and delays. If professionals are doing the work, check that they are familiar with the challenges of renovating before starting, and sit back and enjoy the thrill of watching your dreams come to life. 

Often you might find you need to undo parts of the building before you can start your renovations. This can reveal unforeseen circumstances and problems or simply different requirements. Here it is important to advise your council about how the consent will need to be updated, and whether there will be a delay, or if there needs to be any new inspections or fees. Before a project is complete, you need to seek satisfaction and sign off from the council, as there may be

differences to your project to what was in the original plan. If you are renovating old buildings, it is important to keep in mind that the tolerances for walls and floor levels may have changed. This could be because of the nature of the materials used, and the effects of time and natural events. If an exact match can not be found, a rational approach needs to be taken to reach an agreement on the acceptable level of workmanship. These levels should be recorded in

writing, preferably by noting it within the contract early in the process. This is especially crucial if a building has been through an earthquake, wind, fire or land subsidence. If you are working on Canterbury’s earthquake-damaged houses check out the Residential guidance, which includes building regulation requirements and acceptable solutions, which can be found at building.govt.nz 
