After nearly two years of planning, New Zealand’s newest toy library at Rolleston held its inaugural toy collection day last Sunday at the Rolleston Community Centre. “With more than 200 toy libraries in communities across New Zealand, Rolleston’s is the first to operate entirely online. We had around eight new members braving the heat to come and pick up the toys they had reserved,” says publicity and promotions officer Michelle Sim. “Getting the toy library off the ground has required an enormous amount of effort by the small group of dedicated volunteers. From searching for premises, applying for grants and organising fundraisers, to purchasing new toys, cataloguing, packaging and labelling them. It has been a true labour of love for all of us. “It is an innovation born of necessity because after months of searching, the project drivers, a team of passionate local mums, were unable to find a suitable physical space to operate from. Chris and Ayyam O’Brien of Storage King Rolleston came to the rescue by generously donating the use of two storage units and a delivery truck. “That provided us the opportunity to think outside the box. “Inspired by online shopping, the web-based system allows members to browse and book toys online, then collect them from the central pickup and drop off point at the Rolleston Community Centre, between 3pm–4pm on Sundays.” The Rolleston Toy Library caters for ages 0–6 and has a growing collection of more 250 toys available for hire, a large percentage of which are brand new.

NEWS briefs Use water wisely

To avoid water restrictions, the Selwyn District Council is asking people to use water wisely with the lack of rainfall and hotter weather forecast. “Through good planning and investment in our water supplies, the council is in a good position to meet increased water demand during summer, and there is no immediate need for mandatory water restrictions,” says SDC Infrastructure group manager Murray Washington. “If demand for water increases during summer then water restrictions may be introduced requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. Water supplies are often placed under pressure during summer as many people decide to water their lawns and gardens at the same time. We are encouraging people to think about their water use. If everyone plays their part, we should be able to avoid restrictions and provide water at a good pressure all summer long.” To help this happen the council is recommending that people limit garden and lawn watering to after 9pm, to keep it away from peak usage times and ensure the sun doesn’t quickly evaporate the used water. “If you are considering watering your lawn during the day, it is best to check the conditions and make sure that it

p Murray Washington, Selwyn District Council Infrastructure group manager

won’t be too hot or windy when you do it, which would reduce the effectiveness of the water use.” Tips for managing your water use include keeping showers to a minimum, watering your garden and lawn every few days rather than daily. Water for shorter periods: set your system to run for three five-minute intervals over a couple of hours as the soil absorbs more water than watering for 15 minutes continuously. Use a watering can, check hoses or taps for leaks and make sure sprinklers are watering the plants — not the driveway, footpath or buildings. It is best not to irrigate between 6am–9am and 4pm–9pm and watering on cooler overcast days provide the best opportunity for the water to soak into the soil. ¢

A single 20 year old Pinus radiata will offset all the greenhouse gas through the life of 1 sheep. 1.5 trees will offset 1 cow’s gas for one year. 5 trees will offset the carbon from 1 car for 1 year.

Plantation forestry is already looking great For the same area of land, forestry provides many more jobs than sheep and beef farming and so boosts rural communities. Forest product exports are earning more than beef and sheepmeat combined. And from much smaller land area. Forests are the best way to hold vulnerable landscapes intact. Our future needs to include more forests Forestry is the key to getting New Zealand to carbon neutral. Though trees alone can’t achieve carbon neutrality for New Zealand permanently, our forests’ ability to absorb carbon is crucial for reaching 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas reduction goals. That’s why there are incentives to plant trees, paid for by carbon emitters. That in turn is why so many New Zealand landowners are planting forests. Forests and farms are both crucial for New Zealand. Nearly a third of our log harvest is on farms. Let’s work together. We can continue to feed and house both us and our international customers, and fight climate change at the same time.

Canterbury police are making enquiries into an email sent to a Rolleston School family advising them to keep their children at home.

“We are aware the NZ Police are investigating an email reportedly sent to a parent,” says Rolleston School principal Simon Moriarty. “We celebrate that we are a multicultural community and school — we do not and will not tolerate racist behaviour. We have been providing our community with the most up-todate information from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health advisories, and we are looking forward to welcoming back our students and families for the start of the school year. “At times like this, communities need to come together and support each other.” The Canterbury police have confirmed that on Sunday, February 2 they received a report about a concerning email regarding coronavirus received in the Rolleston area. “We have made contact with the person reporting the matter to provide advice, and enquiries are being undertaken to identify the source of the email. Unlawful, abusive or threatening behaviour targeting another person or group in relation to coronavirus will not be tolerated,” said a police spokesperson. “Reports of racism, xenophobia or

people being targeted for any health reasons will be taken seriously and investigated. We encourage all members of our communities to be alert to, and report, all instances of concerning behaviour to police. “If you see or hear anything, which concerns you, call 111 immediately — whether it is happening in public, at work or school, or online.” Comprehensive health measures are now in place to prevent New Zealanders returning from Wuhan spreading coronavirus. Health Minister Dr David Clark says the government is doing all it can to help those New Zealanders at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan to return home as soon as possible on a chartered flight. “We know this is a difficult and stressful time for those people stuck in Wuhan and their families. It is important they receive the best possible care, but also that effective public health measures are in place to ensure the welfare of both passengers and crew.” The returnees will spend 14 days in isolation at a military facility at Whangaparaoa, where they will receive daily medical checks. ¢

Local MP slams ECAN

Aquatic centre’s extension

ECAN’s handling of a resource consent application relating to emissions from a proposed Waste Management facility on Marshs Road has been appalling, according to Selwyn MP Amy Adams.

u by Ann van Engelen

Work began on the extension to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre last week with the Selwyn District Council appointing Armitage Williams Construction Limited as the contractor to carry out the extension and refurbishment of the existing pool.

p Armitage Williams Construction site manager Kirill Makogon oversees the installation of the filtration system for the new pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre expansion

“The pool extension will meet growing demand at the popular centre,” says council Aquatic Facilities manager James Richmond. “The aquatic centre is one of the most popular destinations in the district with people taking more than 380,000 swims here every year. We know people’s number one wish was for more lane space and extra learn to swim capacity. So we are excited to be starting on that and looking forward to a fantastic pool at the end that will serve everyone in the district.” The new 10-lane, 25-metre pool will more than double the current lane capacity at the aquatic centre and

accommodate increasing demand from aquafitness, casual swimming, deep water and other activities. There will also be additional changing rooms, including five new family changing rooms, along with extra foyer and administration space and the option for a possible cafe in the future. The work will be completed in stages to minimise disruption to pool users. Traffic management is now in place along Broadlands Drive when required to allow truck access in and out of the site. The total cost of the project will be $13.8 million and the new pool extension is expected to be completed and open to the public in late 2020. n

“I have been contacted by many members of the Prebbleton community who are extremely upset about the limited public notification that has occurred in relation to this consent application,” said Ms Adams. “Local residents and businesses, some of which are horticultural in nature and based outdoors, are very concerned about the impact the proposed plant’s discharges could have on them. “ECAN has assessed that odour and air quality effects of the proposed activities at this site would be limited to 500 metres from the site and has used this as justification to restrict the number of parties consulted. Given the high level of public concern on this issue, it is my strong view that ECAN should have included the wider Prebbleton community in its consultation, p Amy Adams, Selwyn MP prior to the Christmas holiday period, as recommended by the CDHB. “Of further concern to the local which has limited people’s ability community is the timing of the to prepare submissions and seek notification to affected parties just professional advice.” ¢

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I thought this might be of interest, my following article to the Selwyn District Council’s page, I have read your latest article on fire alerts, and it prompted me to contact you. While agreeing with the sentiment that it is good to keep our paddocks and properties mowed and tidy, I wish the council would practice what they preach. The accompanying picture is an area of land between Jones and Manion Road approximately 50 metres wide and a kilometre long. It goes right up to a previous fire and hasn’t been mowed for a year. It is jointly owned by the council and KiwiRail. The council showed no interest when informed of the hazard, and the head of maintenance at KiwiRail told me they have run out of money and won’t cut

The Selwyn District Council advised The Record newspaper that the land is not owned by the council. KiwiRail acting South Island general manager Operations Mark Heissenbuttel says: “We mowed part of the grassed area in question around Christmas time, next to the railway track. p Selwyn Baseball Club member Archer Quinton ready to bat as the club prepares for the new season

“We established the club three years ago when a couple of gentlemen wanted to have a men’s team in the Canterbury Baseball Association competition,” says club president Andrew Fleck. “We have under 11s, 13, 16 and 19-year-old teams as well as a men’s team. We generally play at the designated baseball park at Avonhead Park in Christchurch, or we share a pitch in Rolleston with the softball club. “Our biggest challenge is getting a profile for baseball. Softball has been well-known in New Zealand since the 1930s when the American sailors brought the sport here. During the second world war, the soldiers continued to teach us how to play. “We compete against other Christchurch teams and this year we hosted the under 19 nationals, which was very successful. People don’t realise there is an opportunity to get

college scholarships and professional careers such as umpiring, coaching and scoring. The Tuatara team in Auckland is New Zealand’s professional baseball team, and I would love to see our youth aim for this team. “Baseball helps develop fine motor skills in young children with catching and hitting the ball, fielding and running to the bases in the diamond. They can emulate their PlayStation or Xbox games, which are often baseball. “When I saw what the Tuatara team were accomplishing, and having my own children, I moved from softball to baseball. We are at the beginning of the sport in New Zealand, and it is a great time to get children and teenagers involved and grow the sport. “Our first club meet is Sunday, February 16. Thirty years of muscle u by Andy Bryenton

Muscle Car Madness was established 30 years ago because of Rolleston resident Craig Stare’s passion for cars of all makes, models and vintages. It’s an obsession, which afflicts many fellow Kiwis and that deserves celebrating; hence Craig’s determination to make a chrome-plated, flame-painted, nitro-burning show of it. “I have been infected with the car bug since I was 13 years old. We drove past the Rangiora Showgrounds one time, and I decided it would make a great camp-out place for a weekend event,” says Craig. “The first weekend attracted 44 cars and 88 people and last week we saw 963 cars and 2,500 people camping on-site with another 800 cars arriving on the Saturday.” Craig says that people from all around the world come to see the chopped, channelled, tuned and supercharged exhibits, with visitors calling it ‘the best car show in the world’. Alongside classic heavyweights from Detroit like Dodges, Chevys, and Fords, there’s everything you can think of in the classic and vintage ‘jukebox’. “I mean everything; from early 30s hot rods to the late model and near brand new muscle cars,”

says Craig. “The 50s and 60s range are always popular — hence the beauty pageant is based on that era. We even had a two-year-old girl from Rolleston in the pageant pushing her pram!” Cars entered from Whangarei to Bluff, with one ferry sailing carrying 220 classics. People entered ‘mad car’ designs such as replicas of the Wiggles’ red car, Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine, and a spa pool and bar vehicle. The People’s Choice Mothers Polish award went to Russel Lowe, who brought in a Model A coupe with an aero engine. The Rodders Choice Silvester V8 award went to Josh Trybula for his 1941 Buick ‘led sled’, and while the patrons enjoyed the displays, the music and the food on offer, local Civil Defence and the Waikuku Surf Lifesaving Club were the recipients of the day’s charitable donations. ¢

Disappointment with funding According to Selwyn MP Amy Adams, the government’s recent announcement of infrastructure funding has given Selwyn “a few crumbs”.

“While I am relieved that the New Zealand Transport Agency has finally confirmed funding for some projects that I have been advocating for during the past few years, I am disappointed that our region is receiving a very small slice of the pie compared to other regions such as Auckland, which has been allocated billions,” said Ms Adams.

“I know that local residents will welcome the news that NZTA has finally committed to carrying out desperately-needed safety improvements at the intersection of SH73 and Weedons Ross Rd in West Melton, but may be frustrated that work will not start on these until 2021. “While I also welcome the announcement of upgrades to a number of intersections along State Highway 1 between Burnham and Rolleston, these represent only a fraction of what is needed,” she said. The government has announced a huge spend-up on roads, to come out of the $12 billion Infrastructure Fund. Rail, roads and district health boards are the biggest winners. There has been $6.8 billion earmarked for transport infrastructure in the six main growth regions — Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Wellington, Canterbury and Queenstown. A $300 million capital investment has also been put aside for health. Of the $6.8 billion in transport spending, $1.1 billion will be spent on rail and $2.2 billion on new roads for Auckland. Lifestyles ’n’ Farming

Keeping horses cool in summer u by Andy Bryenton

Horses are hardy creatures, evolved to range the steppes of central Asia where the temperature can fluctuate wildly between seasons. However, the summer heat can prove problematic for equine wellbeing, especially in animals with sunburn-prone light colouration. The University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary medicine centre recently published a study, which breaks down the most effective ways to keep your horse or pony cool in the summer months. While many of these top tips are common sense, such as rescheduling pasture turn-out times to the cool of dusk and dawn, providing shade trees and ample water in clean troughs, and reducing intensive exercise on hot days, others are innovative in their approach. For example, cool water is a surefire way to give your horse some summer comfort, but misting with a fine spray of water has proven to be more effective than using a regular hose. Misting systems can be as complex as entire frames, which surround a horse, or as simple as hose attachments, but all kinds are incredibly effective at providing good coverage and allowing the fine droplets to act as a heat exchange medium. Access to cool, fresh water is, of course, a must in the hot months, but horses also need electrolytes with their liquid refreshment. Consider the various sports drinks that are insisted upon by

shade. Modern technology has come to the aid of horse owners in this regard, with solar-powered fans now readily available and dropping in price. Pay attention to the comfort of your equine pets and companions during summer and be alert for signs of heat stress. If you’re concerned about dehydration, depression, lethargy or unwillingness to drink, contact a vet immediately. ¢

human athletes, and the need for such supplements becomes obvious. While it seems counter-intuitive to desire salt in hot weather, a salt lick provided with water can often be combination horses not only benefit from but greatly enjoy. Another technique is to mist salted water on to hay-based feed, once again supplementing this with plenty of water. Some horse owners in extreme temperatures will freeze whole ice cream containers of water to create

giant ice cubes to place in horse troughs as a cooling treat. Pale coloured horses will often require special sunscreen, available from vets, for their noses and the tips of their ears. A very light fly sheet can also be advantageous for horses in the grey to white spectrum. Finally, in-stable fans can prove invaluable on the hottest days, when being inside, provides the best

DAVID STEVENSON CONTRACTING

Stop rust and protect machinery

• • • • •

Come and see us at the field days to see our new Prolan Extreme product. Prolan a New Zealandmade lanolin-based lubricant and corrosion inhibitor is becoming increasingly popular with farmers, engineers, panelbeaters, motorhomers and boaties for its unique ability to adhere to metal and stop rust in its tracks. A coating of Prolan Lanolin Enduro Heavy Grade on a vehicle chassis will provide a long-term protective coating, which will help pass WOF and COF checkouts. Many vehicle stations are now recommending a coating of Prolan to cover existing rust and seal it off from air and moisture. This environmentally friendly lanolin coating can be used on farm, marine vehicles, truck, fertiliser spreaders and motorhome chassis to prevent rust. Prolan cannot be removed by cold water blasting; this allows vehicle chassis to be cleaned without removing the rust protection. Prolan Enduro Medium Grade is excellent as a general workshop lubricant and corrosion inhibitor for coating quad bikes and farm machinery. Many farmers find Prolan so versatile as a general workshop lubricant using it to sort seized locks, bolts, chains and squeaky door hinges. Also as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor to spray over existing rust on machinery or to coat a quad bike or farm mule to prevent the chassis from rusting out. A coating of Prolan for short and long-term protection of machinery stored indoors and outdoors protects assets and increases their resale value. Prolan is easily sprayed using a trigger pack, garden sprayer or airless spray

gun. It is recommended to first remove any dirt, flaky rust and allow machinery to dry before application. Once coated, the longer the period between application and vehicle use — the better the surface will stay. On any cosmetic surfaces, Prolan is buffed in with a rag. The product coverage is 8–10 square metres depending on the surface profile. A one-litre can of Prolan will easily protect a quad bike chassis and a four-litre tin a five-metre truck chassis. Prolan a great environmentally friendly product will save time on maintenance and

“Phil is now managing the on-farm components of the industry’s Primary Growth Partnership programme, P2P, as well as the development of DINZ’s farmfacing services. In these roles he works closely with DINZ producer manager Tony Pearse and environmental stewardship manager Lindsay Fung,” says DINZ chief executive Innes Moffat. “We are increasingly focussing the on-farm side of the P2P programme on helping our farmers improve water quality and biodiversity, and to meet climate change obligations. Meeting market and social expectations for animal and environmental management will enhance the value of the industry. Deer farmers have long been leaders in good environmental practice. The challenge is to fit that good practice into a framework that complies with district plans and new and proposed legislation.” Originally from a farm in Southland, Mr McKenzie has worked in many regions throughout New Zealand, and overseas. and extensive agribusiness experience, including valuable experience with Pamu, where, in his most senior role, he was a general manager with responsibility for the environment. For the past 12 months, he has worked parttime for DINZ as the P2P environment project manager. “With others in the DINZ team, I have been helping groups of farmers complete their Farm Environment Plans. This work will continue. Our formula of

bringing together groups of deer farmers, where they can learn from each other, with the support of skilled consultants, is working well,” he says. “I have been impressed by the spirit of innovation among deer farmers, their ambition to excel and their willingness to collaborate. There is, of course, much still to be done, which is what excites me about this new role — working with others to design practical on-farm solutions that work.” ¢
