Term one has just started, but two of the main venues, Rolleston Community Centre and Lincoln Event Centre have had significant growth in classes. The Rolleston Community Centre has 33 classes, up from 25 in 2012; Lincoln Event Centre is even more remarkable with 30 classes compared to just 12 in 2012. Other venues are now catering to the popular demand: The Tai Tapu Community Centre and West Melton Community and Recreation Centre are also now running classes in 2019. With three classes in Tai Tapu for term one and 12 in West Melton. Some of the more successful council programmes

include Move it to Music, which has increased three-fold since 2012; Mature and Motivated (previously known as Active Seniors), which has more than doubled in size, and the mini gym and baby sessions, which have also about doubled in size. Besides this, there are also several other programmes run by external groups such as day clubs, sports clubs and art groups. The council’s community relations manager, Denise Kidd, said the influx of people into Selwyn after the earthquakes have made a huge difference. “With the growth of population, we had to ensure that our new programmes

met the needs of our whole community. The programmes we run are aimed at being affordable so everyone can access them and from young people to older adults. We can see that from our continued growth of programmes and numbers, and also positive feedback through surveys, we are tracking well.” Denise Kidd said that Selwyn Activities is not confined to the recreation centres. There are also organised classes, events and activities provided by the district’s libraries and aquatic centres, as well as by private providers. She recommends going to the Selwyn District Council website for a full list of activities, times and venues. 

“He brought them drinks, chocolates and pictures to colour in and showed them how the police car works including the communication equipment, lights, siren and other items they use,” says Gretchen Pirika. “He explained what he and his colleagues get up to during their work days and was very interactive with the children. He then got a call-out and had to leave in a hurry, which added

to the children’s excitement. They were absolutely stoked and apparently it has made their holidays totally awesome. “The police do not get enough praise for all the good they do in our communities, and we are grateful to Constable Croucher for taking the time out of his schedule to interact with our children and give them a positive experience.” ¢

Aqua HITT a hit The Selwyn’s District Council’s popular Aqua HITT programme at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston continues to grow, and the council is expanding the programme to cope. Council community relations manager Denis Kidd said the number of participants per month has risen from 358 in July last year to our record of more than 500 in January 2019. “This number continues to grow, and we are expecting attendee figures to further increase throughout the year. We put this down to increasing the number of classes, responding to participant feedback, a bigger range of class intensities, catering for more people and better promotion. “In May 2018 there was a demand for our Aquafit programme to grow and expand. We undertook a timetable restructure and rebranding, as well as nearly doubling the number of total classes from 7 to 12 per week — adding in extra classes both during the day and in the evening. “We also introduced two new intensities: Hydro Health (low intensity, rehab and recovery focussed class) and Aqua HITT (high-intensity interval training). Our team comprises four permanent staff with one to six classes each and two casual staff. It is the enthusiasm, friendliness and motivation of the instructors that keep our participants coming back week after week,” Kidd said.

p Getting into the swim of things

“The purpose of our programme is to provide the community with a low impact exercise option that allows residents to keep active and healthy in a social environment. The Aquafit programme we provide is a key part of delivering ‘exceptional water experiences for everyone’ which is the Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s mission. The Aquafit programme is definitely achieving its purpose, but we are confident that we can further continue to grow and expand, providing more classes for more people.” The Aqua Centre will host a special event, Aqua-thon for Charity, on February 21 from 7pm–8.30pm. It involves a $5 donation to Arthritis NZ and gives participants a taste of each class the centre has to offer. Details are on the council website. ¢

Another award for Chris Allan u by Mike Isle

Rolleston resident Chris Allan is already the recipient of an impressive list of awards and public recognition for his service to the community. Last month the New Zealand Army put its full weight behind yet another award recognising what the army described as Mr Allan’s remarkable commitment and dedication.

p Major Allan (left) receives his award from Lt Col Kendall Langston RNZIR

Mr Allan, who holds the rank of major 2/4 Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Reserve, received his award at a special awards dinner at Burnham Military Camp. It was presented by the battalion’s commanding officer Lt Col Kendall Langston. The full citation on the award reads: ‘Awarded to a member of TRADOC (Training & Doctrine Command — the army’s training group) who has demonstrated remarkable commitment and dedication to a social cause, volunteer work, club or team within organisations in the community.’ Chris Allan has certainly done that. He features frequently in this newspaper for his work with community organisations — most notably with the Joshua Foundation, which he heads, Christchurch Men’s and Women’s prisons, and the Waitaha Learning Centre. Most of his work involves young people. “My aim is to develop leaders within the community through leadership and mentoring in order to provide young people with confidence, leadership ability and a personal self-belief,” he said. “I want to address current trends, which see both self-destructive

behaviour and negative attitudes within young people. Then empower them to establish a life vision, set goals and then support them to facilitate the necessary changes to allow the young person to achieve their vision.” Major Allan is described as a nononsense straight-shooting youth worker, who is passionate about meeting young people, then engaging, connecting and relating to them. His work in the community has reaped numerous awards. In 2017, he was New Zealand Defence Force Volunteer of the Year, Kiwi Bank Local Hero of the Year in 2018 and Selwyn District Council Community Services Award recipient in 2018. However, Mr Allan said his greatest award is the opportunity he has been given to give something back to the community. Mr Allan, who was in 2018 diagnosed with a rare cancerous sarcoma, which he has since beaten, said his focus and passion was helping vulnerable and underprivileged young people. “The only thing I want is to see them succeed.” ¢

Fire permits needed

Selwyn District is in the throes of a restricted fire season. Anyone needing to light a fire outside in the district will need to first obtain a permit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Fire season status is based on weather data collected and computed from 20 weather stations in Selwyn. The data provide information on the potential of a fire spreading and how difficult it may be to suppress. “We normally have to put fire restrictions in place at the start of the summer, but the unusually wet spring meant that at the start of this summer the fire risk was very low so there was no need for restrictions,’’ said Fire and Emergency principal rural fire officer Bruce Janes. “However, the recent run of warm weather has dried out all the vegetation growth caused by the unusual weather patterns, and we have a very large fuel load that could potentially cause a fire to spread very quickly. “With the fire risk indices moving steadily upwards, it is time to introduce restrictions.” People can apply for fire permits online at checkitsalright.nz or call Fire and Emergency on 0800 658 628.

“We can work with you to make sure your fire burns safely, or in some cases, we can advise you that it’s not safe to burn a fire where you plan to,’’ Mr Janes said. “With the fire risk escalating we are also urging people to avoid activities such as welding, grinding and even mowing lawns during the hottest part of the day as those activities may inadvertently cause a fire. “It is also sensible for people with homes near trees, scrub or dry grass to do a check of their property to ensure they have minimised the risk of a fire spreading and that they can provide clear and easy access to fire crews in the event of an emergency.’’ People can find tips for keeping their property safe on the Fire and Emergency New Zealand website. Gas or charcoal barbecues can still be used without a permit. ¢

I wanted a smaller area as I am focussing mainly on flowers now,” says Robyn. ”We still have a range of gifts available including plaques with nice words, trinket boxes, urns, vases, candles, diffusers and silk flowers. Everything we stock, are nice, simple gift ideas that complement flowers. Our customers say they enjoy finding a store with a nice variety available. “For Valentine’s day, you can order or come in and buy a loose bunch of flowers or florist-made bouquets. We also have a range of potted plants available. Our new shop has a green, fresh feel to it.” Robyn has been in the industry locally for nine years, and delivers anywhere in

the Selwyn district, across Christchurch and beyond. “We do all the usual things florists do including baby arrivals, weddings, funerals and all other occasions and we cater to all budgets. “Having a new building is exciting and makes us more a boutique florist with something for everyone. I love my job creating with flowers and sharing clients’ stories and experiences. There is always a story behind a flower order, and no matter what it may be it is a privilege to be a part of that process. That was excellent considering our average age is 55 years and we compete against younger ladies who are cancer free,” says club president, Janice Melville. The champion team have won many gold medals and have been rebuilding the team after the Canterbury earthquakes meant relocating the sport to Lake Pegasus. “Many of our girls couldn’t travel. This regatta was good practice for the upcoming Nationals in April where we will compete against other breast cancer teams. “We have a strong bond with our sister team the Amazon Hearts women’s team. Sheffield bike day out u by Mike Isle

Sheffield Rugby Club is once again running their popular fundraising mountain bike race, but this year they are running it with a difference — they are inviting people to run it.

p From the competitive to the recreational — a day on your bike has something for everyone

The 24-kilometre mountain bike race, which last year attracted 130 cyclists, remains and there is also a more relaxed 12-kilometre option for recreational riders. However, this year for the first time, entrants also have the option of competing in an 11-kilometre trail run. All three options will run concurrently with the same start location and time. Club president and event organiser Tom Ferguson says adding the trail run to the annual event was to broaden the appeal and increase entries. “It is a very important fund-raising event for our club. All proceeds from the mountain bike race go to support the club’s junior teams, and the proceeds from the trail run go toward the Sheffield Cricket Club’s junior sides,” he said. That is the fourth time the Sheffield Rugby Club has held the event and the good thing about it, Mr Fergusson said, was that it catered to all ages and skill levels. “We are a small club, and very much family orientated; so we can

promise you a great day out, whether you are into biking, running or just want to come up and enjoy a superb day out surrounded by superb scenery.” The event will include cash prizes for category winners plus spot prizes ranging from a scenic helicopter ride for three, through to frozen chickens. As well as the races, there will barbeques, refreshments and a bouncy castle. Mr Fergusson said the club recognised that such a large and popular event would not be possible without a high level of support from sponsors. “We are extremely grateful to them,” he said. The Selwyn Rugby Club Mountain Bike Race and Trail Run: Sunday, February 17, starts at 10am, registration from 8am; 981 Dalethorpe Road Malvern Hills. Entries $50 before February 10: $60 after and on the day (cash only). Further details and entry forms: sheffieldmtb. co.nz/. ¢

Park-and-ride for Rolleston Construction is underway at the Selwyn District Council’s Rolleston headquarters for a new car park and public park-and-ride facility, on the site between the building and Kidman Street. Both car parks are expected to be completed in May. “The work was set in the 2018– 2028 LTP last year, as part of the extension and reconfiguration of the council building,” says chief executive David Ward. “That is an exciting time for the council and the district, as these works are a clear indication of how quickly Selwyn is developing.” The new public park-and-ride car park will provide 79 public car spaces and six cycle racks — this will allow people to park close to local bus stops in Kidman Street. It will also extend the parking capacity for council staff with 59 additional car spaces and six motorcycle spaces. The additional car parks will provide extra parking for residents and visitors, which will ease demand.

Avoid Drink Driving

During construction, there will be minor traffic disruptions and delays along Norman Kirk Drive; however, there will be temporary traffic management in place. There will also be no street parking along some sections of Norman Kirk Drive. “The construction of the car parks may cause minor noise and vibrations, and because it is hot and dry there may be some dust produced as a result of the works; however, dust control measures are in place to limit this. “There will be a time when the northern parking area and the fenced compound area will be closed off for council staff and public use for approximately one week. That will allow council contractors to efficiently complete the works.”

Libraries extend hours

Saving water u by Mike Isle

Water is a precious resource. There is not as much of it as we think, and there are plenty of good reasons to save as much of it as we can, particularly at this time of the year. Here are a few ways we can do that. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth — this can save six litres of water a minute. Place a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern to reduce the volume of water used in each flush. Take a shorter shower. Showers can use anything between six and 45 litres a minute. Consider getting an aerated shower head, which combines water and air, or inserting a regulator in your shower, which puts an upper limit on flow rates. Always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher — this cuts out unnecessary washes in between. Fix a dripping tap. A dripping tap can waste 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a year. Water your garden with water can rather than a hose or sprinkler. A hose can use as much as 1,000 litres of water an hour. If you must use a sprinkler, water your garden and lawn every few days

rather than every day. Wetting the soil surface every day encourages roots to develop at the surface, making them more vulnerable to hot, dry spells. Water for shorter periods. For example, setting your system to run for three five-minute intervals over a couple of hours lets the soil absorb more water than watering for 15 minutes continuously. Mulching plants (with bark chippings, heavy compost or straw) and watering in the early morning or late afternoon will reduce evaporation and also save water. Fill a jug with tap water and place this in your fridge. It will mean you do not have to leave the cold tap running for the water to run cold before you fill your glass. Invest in water-efficient goods when you need to replace household products. You can now get waterefficient showerheads, taps, toilets, washing machines, dishwashers and many other water-saving products. ¢

The new hours for libraries across the Selwyn District have begun as a response to customer feedback after a trial announced last August proved very popular.

“The review of library services also included changes to outreach services, including the mobile library. Data showed that usage of the mobile library by children at schools and pre-schools was inconsistent, and general public use of the service was also limited,” says Community Relations manager, Denise Kidd. The council is exploring different options to improve the delivery of outreach services and will be progressively implementing changes during the coming months. The ageing mobile library will eventually be decommissioned and replaced with a smaller vehicle that provides for a broader range of uses associated with outreach. “The new outreach service is expected to provide a more flexible and responsive service for users. It will

include programmes delivered directly to more remote schools and pre-schools, increased availability of digital resources and enhanced 24/7 digital library, along with expanded lifelong learning programmes delivered at locations outside libraries. “We are continuing to build a great team of staff across our libraries network, and I am confident the changes will position us to meet our changing communities’ expectations now and in the future.” Weekday hours at all four Selwyn District libraries will be from 9am to 6pm, with Lincoln and Rolleston libraries remaining open until 8pm on Thursday evenings. Saturday opening will continue from 10am to 4pm, and Lincoln and Rolleston libraries will also be open on Sundays from 10am to 4pm. ¢

New Lakeside Hall opens River level warning u by Mike Isle

One of New Zealand’s earliest memorial halls, built to commemorate soldiers who died in World War 1, while the war was still on, has been rebuilt and was officially opened last Friday.

7

Environment Canterbury is urging visitors and residents of Canterbury to check the weather conditions before they take vehicles near or onto major riverbeds, particularly the Waimakariri.

p Care needed on or near river beds

p At the official opening Dennis Carter (Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall Committee Chairperson) and Joanne Nikolaou (Project Manager Selwyn District Council) planting the celebratory tree — Golden Totara. Flanked by representatives from Te Taumutu Runanga who blessed the site and building and also were part of the ‘sod return’ ceremony

The original Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall was built in 1917 and was for decades the social hub of the small Lakeside rural community. It was demolished after it was severely damaged in the 2010 earthquake. The new hall, which replaces it, is a $1.67 million facility funded by the Selwyn District Council, insurance revenue from the old building and fundraising from the local community. The hall has a ‘long room’ modelled on the famous Long Room at the Lords Cricket Ground in London. It can seat more than 100 people and opens up to a formal lawn and courtyard, which makes it ideal for indoor-outdoor functions such as weddings. The opening event convener Alastair Barnett said the opening on Friday, February 1 attracted a crowd of more than 200, including local MP Amy Adams, Mayor Sam Broughton, councillors Pat McEvedy and Murray Lemon, Selwyn District Council CEO David Ward and representatives from Te Taumutu Runanga. Many of the invited guests also attended an evening meal and

social gathering that followed the official opening. “The hall rebuild was a challenge and without the vision of the Selwyn District Council, the hard work of the Lakeside Community and support of groups such as the Ellesmere Lions Club it may not have happened,” Mr Barnett said. He paid particular tribute to the architecture team from Architecture Workshop headed by Hamish McLachlin, a former Lakeside resident. CityCare was the building contractor, and Innate Landscape provided the landscape design carried out by Johnston Civil. Project management was by Inovo Projects. The chair of the organising committee Dennis Carter said the hall would be a gathering point for the local and wider rural community. “We see it as the foundation of a supportive environment where residents can engage with each other and be involved in the life of the local area.” Mr Carter said. Mr Carter said the hall was in use immediately as the host venue on Saturday night for a 60th birthday party. ¢

They say that there have been several instances of people being taken by surprise this summer by rising river levels at popular recreation spots resulting in rescues. Environment Canterbury river engineering lead, Shaun McCracken, said large rivers such as the Waimakariri could rise rapidly despite being no rainfall on the Canterbury Plains. It is not uncommon for the water level to increase more than one metre in less than an hour and this could happen faster the further downstream you are. “Hot, blustery nor-west winds in Canterbury generally mean it will be

raining on the West Coast mountain ranges, with rain spilling over into the headwaters of the Waimakariri River,” McCracken said. “After this, it can take up to 24 hours for the water levels to rise in the lower reaches of the river — and this can be a surprise to those who haven’t checked the weather and river information.” McCracken encouraged everyone planning to access a major Canterbury river — including the Waimakariri, Rakaia, and Waiau Rivers — to check the weather ahead of their trip. River flow data can be found on Environment Canterbury’s website. ¢

Introducing Laura Shaw

The right match of seed to soil

u by Mike Isle

Laura Shaw is amazing. Late last year she became president of West Melton Young Farmers. She says she is rapt with the honour — but there is a lot more to this young lady, as we are about to find out — this is Laura Shaw in her own words. I was bought up in Amberly on a sheep and beef farm, which my family leased. They then switched to Dairy farming and moved to Te Pirita when I was about 12 where I went to Darfield High School. I left school at the age of 16 after picking up an internship as an accountant with KPMG. I fell in love with accounting and worked my way up the corporate ladder to become a senior accountant specialising in agriculture until I moved to London in 2017 to work as a finance manager. Missing the rural life, I returned to New Zealand and soon joined West Melton Young Farmers. There I met some of my now, best friends through Young Farmers and I enjoy using my professional networks to help build and develop the members understanding of the financial and business side of agriculture. My family are still heavily involved in agriculture, my mother Natasha King has been my mentor through most of my career. My grandfather was the famous lefthanded shearer and former National MP Colin King who was also a major

I’m hoping in future (five years or so) to develop and reach my goal of becoming a director of an agricultural accounting firm and helping farmers face to face, and dream of owning my own sheep and beef farm one day.

LIFELONG LEARNING What future for our region? u by Andy Bryenton

Looking to the future can be inspiring or frightening — it’s a matter of perspective. The problems to tackle in years to come are the flip side of opportunities for growth, prosperity and better living. Smart forward planning is the key to avoiding pitfalls on the road to success. Many local businesses are facing up to the biggest commitment of all — making sure that their team will not only have the right skills for today but the agility and focus to handle change in the future. It’s all about learning. Around the world, businesses realise a simple fact — to adapt in the fast-paced world of modern technology is to thrive. To stagnate is to wither away and disappear. That’s why the biggest asset of the modern business is staff who can learn on the job, updating their skills to meet the challenge. That ethos is to be found right here, in our small towns as well as the big city. In businesses as varied as motor mechanics, engineering operations, agricultural contractors and retail stores. At the foundations, a new generation of apprentices is being trained by forwardthinking bosses, who value longevity in their trade. These will be the electricians, plumbers, panelbeaters and builders (for example) who take care of our children’s generation and the fact that our local tradespeople are accredited to teach means that their skills are nationally recognised as top notch. The commitment to adaptation and training goes beyond that, however. Many companies and professional

organisations run programs of continual training, often having participation as a prerequisite to maintaining a top-level accreditation or status. It assures a thorough knowledge of the latest engine technology in the auto trade, for example, or the best practices in building. From apprentices up, businesses who incorporate learning into their culture outperform the competition in the long run. What does that mean locally? It means we should rally behind those of

our local companies who have made a commitment to training the next generation. To support locals who are making the effort to ensure that here in Selwyn, the knowledge base and skill level inherent in our business community is truly cutting edge. After all, think about the changes in the workplace, in auto and electrical technology, in computers and communications we have seen in just a few decades. Support the visionaries among us now, to ensure that our region thrives tomorrow. ¢

Electrical Services Being one of the few females in a mostly male dominated industry sometimes you need to have a thick skin and show the boys how it’s done in order to be taken seriously. I like to think I give them a good run for their money! Having left school and unsure which trade I wanted to get into, my father pushed for me to try my hand at becoming an Electrician. After landing an electrical apprenticeship I fell in love with the trade and have been doing it for the last 6 years. In the future I hope to be able to expand my electrical knowledge and upskill wherever possible with the new technology and electrical products that are continuously being produced worldwide.
