Start a family tradition

Sometimes the old-fashioned pleasures of life are the best …

With over 1,500 more pupils than this time last year, Selwyn schools are in for a boom year say local principals. Many of the district’s 29 schools are recording increased rolls, with some adding new staff as well. The total number of students enrolled in Selwyn is 9,500. The principal of Lemonwood Grove School, one of two new schools to open in Rolleston last year, Sean Bailey, said his school would be welcoming 40 new entrants this year, bringing the total student roll up to 160. He also has two new teachers on staff. “We are a young school,” he said. “But that only adds to the energy and we are looking forward to an exciting year and curriculum.” Next door to Lemonwood Grove, Waitaha Special Needs Day School is celebrating its move to a new site and a brand new facility with 50 students. Satellite schools boost Waitaha’s roll to 80 students. The principal of the other new school, Rolleston College, Steve Saville, said his school’s roll had doubled, though much of that was attributable to the school now including years nine and ten. The school enrolled 220 new students this year and employed six new teachers. Mr Saville said the school was excited about building on its growth as it entered its second year. “We had a great first year, and we are certainly looking forward to building on that.” Rolleston Christian School principal, Liz Horn, said her school had increased by 18% bringing the school roll up to 130. That included nine new entrants. One new teacher had been added to the staff.

p Rolleston College, one of two new Selwyn schools opened last year.

West Rolleston School has increased its roll by 44 and employed 4 new teachers. Rural communities are also boasting big numbers. Prebbleton Primary’s roll is 467—up 27 from the beginning of 2017; Darfield High School has a roll of 850, including 126 Year Seven entrants. At Lincoln Primary, the growth has been both steady and spectacular. There are three additional teachers on board this year, and principal Viv Butcher reports that the school roll has increased from 566 at the beginning of 2017, to 661 this year. As reported last month by The Record,

the start of the school year and the dramatic increase in student numbers are putting the focus on road safety around schools. Schools, Police and the Selwyn District Council are all counselling care and caution. Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police said Police have mounted a campaign specifically aimed at safety around Selwyn’s schools. “Police will also be patrolling outside schools and preschools targeting speeding drivers, illegal parking and dangerous driving manoeuvres. The safety of all children is paramount.” ¢

Classic tale in the gardens As a French aristocrat and owner of a great chateau in the country, author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was no stranger to beautiful gardens.

As a pioneering aviator, however, he was lost in the Sahara Desert, where the idea came to him of a lonely prince living on a tiny planet. The story he wrote after his rescue would go on to be translated into 300 languages, and this month it’s about to be reinterpreted in a garden setting, thanks to the Anthony Harper Summer Theatre production of The Little Prince. The beloved story will be brought to life at the Christchurch Botanical Gardens on Rolleston Road, with a run lasting all the way through February. With a lush green backdrop in the summer evenings, this free event combines acting, illusions, puppetry and more to tell the story of the Little Prince, a visitor from a tiny asteroid who wants to

understand the strange human beings on our planet Earth. Whimsical and fantastical rather than being rooted in the tradition of science fiction, it’s a tale, which has been beloved by children and parents since the 1940s. Masterfully enacted by Two Productions, this outdoor event may have been written for younger folks, but adults will also find plenty to enjoy in the warm-hearted plot and clever blend of media used to make it come alive. Visit ccc.govt.nz/news-and-events/ events/show/714 for information about the many free shows this month. Because this is open air theatre, rain may cause cancellations and schedule alterations. ¢

The Confident Driving Courses run by Age Concern as part of the Selwyn District Council’s Road Safety Programme will continue in 2018.

Police making enquiries into the theft of seven cattle from a Banks Peninsula property have accounted for two of the missing animals.

p Courses popular with 60s and over

This resulted from a ‘tip-off’ from a member of the public who heard about the allegation of stock thefts from a Port Levy property. Police are continuing to make investigations into the remaining missing cattle and five Friesian bulls missing from an adjacent property. Earlier, it was reported that Police were investigating the theft of seven cattle from the Port Levy property. The hides of the animals were left hanging on a fence. The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective

The courses are so popular, bookings are essential, said the council’s road safety coordinator, Ngaire Tinning. “Confident Driving Courses, which are exclusively for drivers in their 60s and over, are a fun and easy way for residents to refresh their driving skills and road rule knowledge, and look at ways to plan how their driving can be safer on the road. “As Selwyn is a rural area, driving is important for older people needing to access local services and connecting to family and friends. “The courses have proven very popular and valuable to assist people to be able to continue to drive safely on our roads.” She said the course covers road rules, planning car trips, using safe routes and what times to avoid peak traffic. The course is designed to be thoughtprovoking, informative, enjoyable and informal. “There are no tests or exams and participants each receive

a certificate of attendance,” Mrs Tinning said. Each course is free, lasting five hours on one day, using a workbook, and morning tea, lunch and refreshments are included. The next course is in Darfield on Tuesday, 20 February. Contact Yvonne or Deidre at Age Concern on (03) 366 0903 or Ngaire at the council (03) 347 2901 to reserve a place. ¢

The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between January 20 and January 26, when the matter was reported to Police. February 7 - 2018  THE RECORD

Dodging a bullet u by Kent Caddick, Editor

Well my summer holiday didn’t turn out the way it was planned and many of you will have noted my absence from the pages of The Record over the past weeks. My partner and three of our adult children had booked a bach at Tata Beach in Golden Bay for a week in early January. We have been going to Golden Bay for a number of years, as it was where my partner was living when we first met. However, a week before we were to leave I found myself in Christchurch Hospital about to undergo major surgery for the removal of an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, or Triple A as it is referred to. I had been having minor abdominal pains for around 10 months and had been going to my GP to try and resolve. I had been tested for a number of things including testicular cancer, which proved negative, and diagnosed with a bowel issue called diverticulitis for which I received antibiotics. 1D Cardale St, Darfield Phone: 03 318 8836 darfieldpreschool@xtra.co.nz ï Passionate, dedicated staff ï Excellent child:teacher ratio ï 7.30am–5pm Mon–Fri

However, the pain continued and I wanted it sorted before I went on holiday. So I ditched my regular GP and took a chance on a locum at the local medical centre. I am so glad I did as he saved my life. Dr Don Ponnamperuma, who is originally from Sri Lanka and likes to be known as Dr Don, had just finished an internship at the cardiovascular unit at Christchurch Hospital, which is where I was to eventually end up. He was very quick to diagnose a potential Triple A and told me to go for an ultrasound. Simply put an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is the balloon-like swelling of the aorta, the major artery which carries the blood from the heart to the lower body, including kidneys and legs. Once you have one, it continues to grow until it eventually bursts and you have less than a 15% chance of surviving a rupture. Basically I had been a dead man walking for at least five years as it could have ruptured anytime. Once the ultrasound confirmed Dr Don’s diagnosis I was taken to hospital and underwent a five hour operation the following morning to remove the aneurysm and repair the aorta. The operation, under the guidance of Dr Peter Laws, was successful and I

p Holiday snap from Tata Beach in 2016, which I had hoped to replicate this summer.

am expected to make a full recovery. An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a killer and is actually a lot more common than people realise. The difficulty evidently is in the diagnosis. However, I was a prime candidate… male, over the age of 55, high blood pressure, smoker with lower abdominal pain. Even people who have given up smoking can have one before they give up and it will continue to grow. There are moves afoot to introduce mandatory

testing for it in men 60 years or older, and it is just a simply ultrasound so it’s not a biggie. My advice to all you men out there, especially you smokers, is get it checked now and, of course, stop smoking. I have and will this week mark being smokefree for a month. I won’t lie it can be hard giving up, but all I need to do is look at the 27cm scar, which runs from my breastbone to below my navel for motivation. ¢

Altitude training could benefit non-athletes

School’s back, take care on crossings

u by Mike Isle

Selwyn District Council is asking drivers to stay alert for children as schools return during the coming week.

Simulated altitude training is well known for improving athletes’ physical performance, but a local study suggests that nonexercisers could benefit from the technique as well. Lincoln University Sports scientist Dr Mike Hamlin recently conducted a meta-analysis to see whether this type of training could improve the cardiovascular health of people with sedentary lifestyles or heart disease. “There’s a lot of available research on the benefits of altitude training for athletes but very little about its effect on sedentary or clinical populations,” he said. “I reviewed 26 studies, where 22 focused on sedentary participants and four looked at clinical patients.” Three different simulated altitude training methods were used as part of the studies. The first two techniques included either reducing participants’ oxygen supply for three to four hours or five to ten minutes. The third involved depriving participants of adequate oxygen during exercise. For sedentary patients, five to ten minutes was judged most likely to improve the heart rate during exercise. “This improves fitness and means people will take longer to become exhausted during aerobic exercise,” says Dr Hamlin. Dr Hamlin said that typically, a four week intervention of hour-long hypoxic exposure intervals five days a week,

p Dr Mike Hamlin

was beneficial for easier breathing and enhanced ability to exercise at maximum intensity. “Intermittent exposure may improve fat metabolism in the short-term, but normal exercise is likely to work better for this in the long-term. However, there is evidence that intermittent exposure may improve vascular health.” ¢

Over 9,500 Selwyn children will be travelling to school from Monday, 29 January, up from 8,000 in 2017. Many of these young people will be getting off and on school buses, in and out of cars and walking, biking and scootering to and from school. Council School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler reminds drivers that the only time drivers must stop for pedestrians is on a pedestrian (zebra) crossing, at a school road patrol or kea crossing when the stop lollipops are out, and when pedestrians have a green man at traffic signals. A crossing point is an area that has been deemed by Council as the best place for pedestrians to cross the road. It may have kerb build outs to shorten the crossing distance and some may have a pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road to cross the road in stages. Pedestrians need to stop, look and listen before crossing the road at a cross point and just like any other section of road, vehicles have the right of way. “I often see drivers stopping to let children cross at cross points. Although drivers may think it’s courteous stopping in the lane, it’s incredibly

dangerous and setting our children up for failure. Children may develop an expectation that all vehicles will stop for them,” says Mrs Hautler. “It is unsafe to stop in a live lane of traffic and you run the risk of being rear-ended or worse, being shunted into the very pedestrian you were trying to help”. Mrs Hautler says that if a vehicle stops on a crossing point, pedestrians should wave them on and wait for a gap in the traffic to cross safely. Key tips for children and parents getting ready for the school year include: • Be bright, be seen on your way to school, ask your school for a safety vest. • Tackle the routes with your child talking about sneaky driveways and blind corners. • Get out and active together to reduce the chaos at the school gate. • Wear your helmets, this goes for caregivers too, young people are watching you! However, commuting is only one of the benefits of cycling. The Aotearoa Bike Challenge, developed by New Zealand Transport Agency and Love to Ride, seeks to promote cycling as an enjoyable all round recreational activity — with the event introducing a competitive element. Workplace teams enter the event and any biking done — commuting, recreational or for fitness — counts in the challenge. The teams with the greatest percentage of staff for their size category win prizes such as e-bikes and backpacks. Last year, over 14,000 cyclists participated. The council is encouraging local workplaces to enter teams in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge, which is a nationwide event supporting fitness, good mental health and the love of bike riding. One of those promoting the event locally is council school safety coordinator, Stephanie Hautler. Stephanie speaks from personal experience of the benefits of cycling, but admits to being a little nervous at first. “I had some experience of off-road biking. But getting on the road to the office was a different matter. “As part of my role to promote cycling, I thought I should walk the talk. I soon found that the shortest route is not always the best or safest route. So, I hunted out some quieter roads, which added only a couple of minutes to the trip, and were much more pleasurable. “I now really enjoy the 15 minute commute,” she said.

It is part of the council’s wish to keep the district’s cemeteries in a condition where all visitors have a respectful and peaceful place to mourn their loved ones. Letters have been sent to the families. A similar request has already been made in relation to the Prebbleton Cemetery, and other cemeteries will follow suit in 2018. The council is at pains to point out that it is not asking for the ornaments to be removed — only that they be placed within the grave site itself. A council spokesman said that to comply with the current Cemetery By-law, all adornments are required to be placed on the concrete beams provided, not on the lawn areas in front or around the plots, meaning people can continue to place adornments on the beams. “Any items placed on grave surrounds also pose a risk to maintenance for

Compass Feature

Journey with us toward your perfect home u by Andy Bryenton

When early settlers headed for New Zealand shores over 150 years ago to make a new home, it was the compass, which pointed the way. Today, finding the perfect place to live is less the business of captains and sailors, and more the business of architects and builders. But for one company at least, the compass is still the guiding light pointing toward success. Compass Homes may be all about timber, concrete and metal, but the real strength of their business lies in 45 years of experience in the building industry, and a hand-picked team who cover every aspect of the process. From the designers who have carefully drawn up over seventy characterful and practical home designs for their catalogue, down to the folks who swing the hammers, run the wires and tighten the fittings, the Compass Homes team come fully qualified and with a formidable set of testimonials from happy customers. Ask why, and the answer at any of their nationwide locations will be the same — communication. That’s the

key to making sure your customers get precisely what they want in any industry, but it’s doubly important when one is talking about what may be a family’s biggest investment — not to mention the place where they raise their children or spend their retirement years. Compass acknowledge that a home is not something bought ‘off the peg’, and that a dialogue is the only way to ensure that all the many facets of construction are perfect — from colours and textures to views, amenities, and personal touches. For this reason Compass offer an online system to track your build, and even invite customers to join them onsite during the construction

process for input each step of the way. After all, communication allows us to exceed expectations — and that makes for happier home owners. With three building options — timber, concrete and hybrid construction — over the aforementioned seventy

architecturally designed plans, Compass Homes are able to offer a wealth of personalisation options. They also deploy those 45 plus years of experience to handle all stages of the process, from advice on securing finance through to managing all the paperwork for council

Farmers need to be vigilant u by Mike Isle

The recent theft of cattle from two Banks Peninsula properties has highlighted the need for security on farms say police. Theft of stock and farm machinery is on the rise, but there are measures farmers can take to protect their properties Police say. Security options for farmers to consider include installing CCTV or wireless alert systems, which can activate an alarm in the farmhouse if an intruder is in or around farm sheds. Detective Senior Sergeant Neville Jenkins, who is investigating the cattle thefts on Banks Peninsula, says such devices are highly effective and can even monitor wide areas where there is no cell coverage. Local security consultant, Jarrod Owens of West Melton-based One Vision, agrees. He says farm CCTV is a worthwhile investment, and one of the most effective deterrents against theft is signage stating a farm has security cameras. Sergeant Jenkins says that farmers should also look out for unusual activity

surrounding their farms—not only on the farms themselves. He gives as examples a vehicle parked on a rural road, a drive-by at odd times of the night or even people walking around who look out of place. All of

which could point to criminals checking out a farm for a potential crime. Sergeant Jenkins says it is it is better to be safe than sorry and he urges farmers and rural communities to report suspicious activity to Police. ¢

Start a family tradition

david stevenson contracting

u by Andy Bryenton

Sometimes the old-fashioned pleasures of life are the best. And while some of them aren’t strictly speaking free, there’s one family tradition, which many of us will remember, which is just as much fun today. There are those who think that there’s nowhere left in New Zealand to pick fresh fruit with the kids — but they’d be very wrong. The Selwyn district is a veritable fruit salad of commercial orchards and private collections of fruit trees, growing everything from cherries to apples, walnuts to blueberries. Many of these family-operated farms open their gates to the public during the height of the harvesting season, allowing families to pick the juiciest of their wares. Just like in the old days, it’s perfectly fine to taste one or two right from the tree — with the permission of the farmer! A great examples is Blueberry Bliss, located in Broadfield. For more than 20 years they’ve been inviting people in to pick their own during the summer season, as well as supplying cafes and eateries. This is the sunny heart of blueberry season, so a quick check of blueberrybliss.co.nz for opening hours and you could be off this weekend to collect a basket of delectable fruit. Recipes are on the same website to make the most of your haul! Just down the road a busy season has just finished for the West Melton Cherry Farm, the biggest in the region. Cherries enjoy a brief harvest window of opportunity, but while they are heavy on the trees this is a great spot to visit. Keep them in mind for next year! Coming soon, however, it’s the turn of Gary and

Pears are ripening right now for a picking season, which begins in March, so keep your eyes on the weather — they will be open March — April, Saturdays and Sundays from 8.00am – 5:00pm. For a real treat, visit the home of sweet berries in Tai Tapu — the Raspberry Cafe. Set amid fields of raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, the folks here blend their fresh produce — right from the fields — into ice cream and desserts, cakes and sweet treats that are impossible to resist. Build the foundations strong u by Andy Bryenton

Roads, races, driveways, feed pads — all areas on the farm where erosion from the elements takes a constant and costly toll. Wouldn’t it be nice to build a simple, strong foundation beneath these areas to stop runoff and prevent washboarding, cracking and slippage? As autumn approaches and it comes time to consider the maintenance of all those exposed transit areas on the farm, along comes an innovation that could be a godsend for those who are sick of watching their hard work literally go down the drain culvert with each round of winter storms. Diamond Grid is the leading surface stabilisation grid system in Australasia, coming from worldwide tests in the agricultural, landscaping and mining industries. It is extremely rugged — think over one thousand tonnes per square metre when filled with gravel, sand or chip. Due to its unique grid structure, it’s permeable, preventing the

Pay attention!

runoff effect, which strips the surface of conventional roads, pads and races. By eliminating erosion, rutting and puddling, ongoing maintenance costs are significantly reduced. That massive load rating — made for heavy vehicles — means that even a herd of cattle can’t make a dent in the interlocking grids — think of matted pieces that slide and lock like a building set. This form of construction increases the structural strength even more. Diamond Grid has recently been introduced into New Zealand and by the end of 2017 a manufacturing plant is up and running in Christchurch — using

around road works

recycled plastics from the auto industry. It’s a win-win for the environment and the farmer. Larger grids (1,000 x 1,000mm) are not available in New Zealand at this stage. These are mainly used on the big mining roads in South America. Rural-sized 900mm x 560mm grids cost a snap at just $15 each, and each one weighs just 3 kilos — easy to manhandle into place. They can even be trimmed with a simple skill saw for custom work. Then just fill with one of many kinds of filler and your surface is rocksteady and ready. Diamond Grid has been used for pathways, driveways, shed floors,

mountain bike paths, golf courses, car parks, drains, boat ramps, carports, horse stables, racecourse stables, horse walkers, cattle yards, feed and water trough pads, cattle walkways, creek crossings, day yards, workshop floors, truck depots, fuel station hard stands, excavator yards, mine access roads, haul roads, fire trails, air strips — the list goes on. Now it’s ready to weather the test of time on local farms. If you’re ready to invest a little now to save huge headaches in years to come, start at the ground level and get on board with this handy innovation. ¢

THE NEW RURAL INNOVATION YOU NEED TO SEE DIAMOND GRID IS AN INTERLOCKING GRID THAT REDUCES EROSION, POTHOLES, CORRUGATION AND ELIMINATES ALL MUDDY SURFACES ON YOUR PROPERTY.

BEFORE

Diamond Grid has a filled load bearing capacity of over 1000 tonne/sqm once installed meaning they will not wear through even with constant use. Durable, cost effective and easy to install. FOR: • Driveways • Races • Trough pads • Feed pads • Barn floors • And more...

USED WORLDWIDE: • In mining • Road building • Civil infrastructure • Farming • Anywhere a stable, tough surface with reduced runoff is needed.

Dining & Entertainment ADVERTORIAL

Romance is in the air After the major roadworks disruption around Rosebank Estate and Winery, near the Groynes, the restaurant is now back in business with a lot of exciting new events planned for this year. We kick off with a lovely Valentine’s dinner with a specially designed menu by our French Chef Jean-Paul. Valentine’s Eve will start with a bubbly on arrival to put you in the right mood, with several mouth-watering dishes and desserts. The restaurant will be ‘dressed up’ with tables decorated for the occasion, with candles everywhere creating a soft romantic atmosphere. Well known musician Lee Martin, will be entertaining with her haunting tones and easy listening style. Lee has cut two original albums and is always popular with audiences. A small dance floor will be available, should you want to do a few steps. This is the occasion not to be missed to show your loved one your appreciation! Come early, take a stroll through our beautiful gardens and smell the roses. Book early. Our next event will be the Irish Dancing evening on February 23. Several Christchurch

Irish dancers have been taking part in New Zealand and Australian national competitions and have excelled, taking away many titles and awards. A group of these dancers will give a display of both soft and hard shoe dances during our special Happy Irish Hour. Off course Irish drinks like Baby Guinness, Irish whiskies and creams will be available at good prices. This is a free event — make a note to come after work on Friday, February 23! Several other events will follow such as dances, Bastille Day/French celebration, Spanish evening and later the ever popular Oktoberfest. Rosebank is not only popular for special events, but offers great lunches and dinners at affordable prices. The wine list is extensive and our Rosebank wines are always popular.
