p Rolleston has a new early childhood learning centre. In many respects, not least the learning experience itself, Three Trees is modern and futuristic. With the three trees representing Past Present and Future, the centre lives up to its name by evoking from the past skilled craftsmanship in building construction and landscaping and very tangible engagement with nature. The centre complex is the work of award-winning architects Collingridge and Smith who worked in close concert with centre owners Jenny Tippet and Libby Cunniffe. When it comes to flat out speed across rough terrain …

The Three Trees Learning Centre, a 3,050 square metre complex located in Dynes Road next to Foster Park, received its Maori blessing and karakia last week and will open its doors for the first day of term next Monday. There will be a public open day on Saturday, January 19. The centre will

cater to children from 0 to 6 years of age. Jenny Tippet who along with business partner Libby Cunniffe is coowner of Three Trees said the learning centre would be offering a uniquely holistic approach integrating the best learning practices and philosophies from New Zealand and overseas.

“Children at the centre will be able to explore and develop in a fun yet nurturing, environment with the freedom lead to their own learning through uninhibited discovery within an on-site forest and a strong outdoor focus,” she said. continued on page 3…

“This is an issue of importance to the world. Intensive production of meat and milk is a major source of greenhouse gasses, water pollution and soil degradation,” says the Lincoln Envirotown Trust’s Dr Sue Jarvis “Many people are turning to a vegetarian or vegan diet. However, food production is vital to New Zealand’s economy and to ensure the world has enough to eat. “How will changes in demand, modern technology and an awareness of ethical, environmental and health issues affect our agricultural production? Is artificial meat going to take off? Should we be planning for this? How will it affect our farmers?” Well-known broadcaster Kim Hill and panellists for the Hot Topic 2019 of Peak

Happy shearing start South Island shearer Troy Pyper has extended his winning sequence and got a big year underway in winning style with victory at the Peninsula Duvauchelle Shears held on Saturday at Akaroa. Pyper dominated throughout the heats and semifinals whilst relying mostly on speed in a 15-sheep, fourman final, which he shore in 13min 34sec. He has had six consecutive wins in finals dating back to the Ellesmere A&P Show in October and is becoming a leading South Island hope for this year’s Golden Shears and New Zealand championships and has the dream of a place at the world championships in France this July. Runner-up was Ant Frew, of Pleasant Point was more than half a sheep behind and Canterbury-based Chilean shearer Luis Pincol scored his 16th senior class win, figuring in a blow-forblow 10-sheep final finish with Duncan Leslie, of Owaka. Edward Harrington had his first victory since the 2017 Ellesmere show in winning the intermediate final by more than five points from Sam Bryan, of Darfield, and England shearer Henry Mayo scored his fifth junior win of the season in the South Island, beating

“Children learn most effectively when connecting deeply with nature through play experiences.” Mrs Tippet said the learning centre had been designed with the deliberate attention of capitalising on the pristine natural environment in which the centre is located. The site was originally a hardwood forest, and many of the original trees have been retained, supplemented by extensive planting of New Zealand natives. The forest theme permeates throughout the centre. Wood is the predominant material for the buildings and the inside and outside furniture. Colours are mostly natural wood tone, and even the building’s impressive eaves replicate a forest canopy. “We resisted the temptation to have a

large building on a shoebox-sized site. Rather we, want to surround the central building with a large footprint of carefully nurtured landscaping that offers both fun and a learning experience for our children. With Foster Park next door, a church over the back and birds singing everywhere it is simply stunning,” Mrs Tippet said. Mrs Tippet said the learning centre would maintain small group sizes and a low teacher to student ratio. The centre is licensed to a maximum of 130 children, and Mrs Tippet said she and Libby Cunniffe had employed 17 fully qualified and registered teachers. Three Trees would open on Monday with a roll of 95 — with a further 52 children on the waiting list, she said. The open day on Saturday is from 9am to noon. ¢

Templeton RSA support services welfare officer, David Sands, said the free service had virtually no visitors since it was established just under a year ago, and that he finds deeply concerning. “I personally am concerned about post-traumatic stress injury that is and has been experienced by some of our younger service men and women,” he said. “We are able to mentor families into the various government agencies for assistance.” Mr Sands said he is even more surprised that the service is not more widely used, because it is free, entirely confidential and modelled on a similar and successful hub

Lincoln University is continuing its drive to increase Maori and Pasifika representation in tertiary study, by introducing a suite of scholarships in 2019. The $5,000 scholarships are intended to assist those passionate about agriculture, science, tourism, Matauraka Maori including Mahinga kai, and to support students pathwaying up from other tertiary providers. Lincoln introduced Maori and Pasifika Accommodation Scholarships at the start of 2018, while Sir Turi Carroll Scholarships for Maori student leaders were initiated in 2013. Lincoln University director Maori and Pasifika, Dr Dione Payne, said the intent of the scholarships is to support and encourage Maori and Pasifika students to achieve their aspirations for their whenua, whanau, hapu and iwi. “They are part of an overall strategy to increase the number of Maori and Pasifika students at Lincoln University, which includes pastoral and cultural support to create a home-like atmosphere on campus for those away from whanau. “The scholarships are a key component of Lincoln University’s Whenua Strategy (for Maori) and Motu Strategy (for Pasifika), she said. Little River Band headlining

The iconic Selwyn Sounds music festival returns to Leeston for the third year in a row, with the promoter promising the biggest lineup of top acts ever. Little River Band will headline the March 2 concert, with a build-up including veteran performer UK’s Leo Sayer and kiwi legends Jon Stevens, Peter Urlich and Midge Marsden. “Not only is this the most extensive range of international and local talent we’ve ever had, but every single has songs guaranteed to get you up dancing,” said the promoter, David Parlane. “It is so good, it will be almost impossible for concert goers to stay in their seats.” Little River Band shot to Australian and international fame in 1975 with a string of hits, including Reminiscing, Cool Change, Lonesome Loser, The Night Owls and arguably their biggest hit Help is on its way. Their worldwide album, CD sales and digital downloads top 30 million, and they have also set a record for having had top 10 hits for six consecutive years. Leo Sayer has performed everywhere from Moscow to New York’s Central Park and London’s Royal Albert Hall in his 40-year career. He has had more than 20 top ten singles and five top ten albums, as well as writing hits for many major international performers. His numerous hits include such classics as You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Just a Boy, When I Need

You and Dancing the Night Away. The New Zealand performers include the cornerstones of some of Australasia’s biggest bands: Jon Stevens (INXS), Peter Urlich (The Dudes) and Midge Marsden from the eponymous Midge Marsden Band. Under the Golden Kiwis banner, the support line-up reads like a Who’s Who of the New Zealand music scene with artists from six of the best kiwi bands, including Harry Lyon (Hello Sailor), Rikki Morris (Crocodiles), Cherie Mathieson (Sola Rosa), Rick Ball (Hello Sailor) and Tony Waine (Narcs).

David Parlane said Selwyn Sounds had huge spin-off benefits to Selwyn and particularly Leeston. “In 2017, the festival attracted 7,500 concertgoers, in 2018 with a huge amount of

positive feedback it jumped to a sell-out of 10,000,” he said. The event will again be held at the Lincoln Domain. Tickets are available from selwynsounds.co.nz. ¢

The 34kW voltaic array of 114 panels were craned into place by CPS Solar, over the north, west and east rooflines. Asset services manager, Bronwyn Simmonds, says a significant amount of time and capital ”is going into our commitment to reducing our environmental impact. “We have deliberately chosen to start with a 34kW array for Tuam Street, which should reduce our annual electricity expenditure by approximately $6,500+GST. We will add to it as both the efficiency of panels increases and their price reduces, and also commit to battery storage at the appropriate time. The project has involved a team

of people, including external firms CPS Solar, Enercon and Setpoint Solutions, together with internal staff. “This follows a considerable decrease in energy consumption for our Tuam Street office, which has trended downwards as a result of staff behaviour and ongoing commissioning of our plant. Savings over the past year have been in the vicinity of 18 per cent, which has been a great result,” Ms Simmonds says. “We are currently getting a NABERSNZ rating to benchmark the energy efficiency for Tuam Street, and other initiatives will flow on from this in 2019 in our quest for constant improvement.” ¢

Circus comes to town Challenge completed  by Mike Isle

 by Mike Isle

Even in this digital age, the traditional circus still has an irresistible attraction for young and old. Moreover, there are few circuses who do it better than Zirka Circus, which opens a fiveday season in Rolleston Reserve tonight.

Many New Year resolutions might include the completion of a half or full marathon as a goal, though perhaps not if you are a prisoner. However prisoners at the Christchurch Men’s Prison Youth Unit have already achieved this.

Zir ka Circus has successfully been entertaining families in New Zealand for more than 10 years but their all-new show, La Unica, takes entertainment to a whole new height of entertainment — literally. Whether you like actionpacked daredevil acts performed at breath-taking heights or beautiful, balletic and poetic acts, there is something for everyone in this new show. What it doesn’t have are animals. In the modern age, they no longer form part of the circus environment, and in reality, the modern audience doesn’t expect or want them. p Thrilling acts are all part of the modern circus Instead, what they want — and get — from Zirka Circus are world- clowns. It’s the second year the marathon has been run by prisoners completing their Duke of Edinburgh’s award, with principal corrections officer Gary Smallridge setting them goals. Seventeen youth prisoners took part in the run, with 16 completing a half marathon. One prisoner finished the full marathon with a time of just over five hours. One of the half marathoners had only removed a moon boot a week before after recovering from a broken toe. Prison director, Joanne Harrex, said the event was a resounding success. “Running together is a leveller, and these young men have learnt from their fellow runners that if you train for something, support each other and stick at it even when it’s tough, you can achieve a good result. “There were lots of sore legs, lots of blisters and happy and surprisingly high-spirited young men at the finish line. “The marathon has given the boys a sense of achievement and pride in their own abilities. “The boys, along with the PCO and some other keen staff run most mornings throughout the year, but

additional effort is put in over the last couple of months to improve fitness.” “All the runners were cheered on by other prisoners in the yards inside the prison and staff at various locations along their route,” Joanne Harrex said. Two staff and two guests, including a visually impaired runner who flew down from Wellington to compete on the day, also completed the full marathon. The overall winner was one of the prison’s psychologists who finished in a time of four hours 31 minutes. The marathon course is set out inside the prison fence and includes 19 laps, and a final 200-metre sprint to the finish line to complete the full marathon distance of 42 kilometres. ¢

The future comes today  by Andy Bryenton

While it’s unlikely that your breakfast was prepared for you this morning by an automaton in a crisp butler’s uniform, there is one task around the house which is now able to be undertaken entirely by ‘artificial intelligence’. Automatic lawn mowers have been a dream since the first time an enterprising soul attached a radio control unit to their old two-stroke, but the issue has always been a similar one to the main roadblock in the path of the robotic vacuum cleaner — we don’t all have laser-flat, empty lawns. Defining the path where the mower had to travel was a challenge, and leaving such a machine alone raised the spectre of it becoming stuck in a garden bed, simply chewing up your favourite shrubbery. A second issue was power — oldfashioned batteries were not up to the task of powering a robotic mower for very long or very far. Now Husqvarna — who have spent years developing automated mowing technology — have revealed a solution to both issues, and the era of the fully robotic garden helper is p Husqvarna’s 450X-line automower uses GPS to build a map of your garden here. Help your dog beat the heat  by Andy Bryenton

Dogs are man’s best friend, but the hot sun is not too friendly for them. While we humans enjoy the balmy days of summer, dogs — with their inability to regulate their temperature as effectively as us — can be left feeling uncomfortable — too much heat, and there’s a real danger that your dog will suffer from heat stroke. Nevertheless, there are plenty of ways to make sure summer is a fun time for your four-legged friend, instead of a time to hide away from. It’s a myth that dogs don’t sweat at all in the summer — amazingly, however, their only area of thermal regulation is on their feet. We all know how they deal

with the rest — a panting dog with his tongue out is synonymous with sunny days. Of course, dogs with long or fluffy coats, dogs who are overweight, and breeds with flatter faces (think British bulldogs, pugs and boxers) have a harder time panting and thus regulating their temperature than dogs with a classical long muzzle, short hair and a trim build. All dogs love to run and play, and taking a walk is likely the highlight of both their day and yours. Just like you, however, dogs feel the burn when exercising in the sun. Try to time walks earlier or later in the cool of the day. Bring a collapsible dish or ice cream container and a bottle of water for your dog, and if they want to relax for a while, lower the pace or stop to sit. At home, water is the key to a happy summer. Offer a rigid plastic paddling pool for wading, treat your pup with a garden sprinkler in the heat of the day, and prepare double dishes of water. One of these dishes should be a frozen lump of ice — freeze an entire ice cream container full and leave it out

to thaw. As it does, so it will provide a day of cool drinks. Similarly, you can freeze segments of ‘dog log’ pet food to make canine popsicles, which will be well received by your pet. Remember

to provide plenty of shade, and never, ever leave your dog in a hot car during summer. If both of you are really feeling the heat, find a local dog-friendly beach and hit the waves! ¢

Should we insure our pets?

Does anyone call their cat Tiddles anymore? Or their dog Rover? Perhaps not. However, if little Tiddles or Rover, for the sake of argument, become sick or are injured the cost of getting them back on four feet again can be horrendous. That is why more and more New Zealand pet owners are turning to pet insurance. According to MoneyHub, the website that looks into all matters insurance, more than half of New Zealanders (58%) own a cat or a dog. One in 10 cat owners and one in five dog owners insure their pet. Nevertheless, pet insurance is relatively new for Kiwis, and before we buy a policy for our cat or dog, there are a few things to know to ensure we get the most suitable policy at the right price. First, not all pets qualify for pet insurance. If your border collie doubles as a sheepdog, it may not be able to get pet insurance — check with the insurer first. Dogs used for racing, hunting or farming may not be covered. Pit Bulls are also excluded by most policies. However, if your pet does qualify, pet insurance is certainly worth investigating. Even relatively minor surgery such as setting a broken bone can cost thousands. Pet insurance can cover much of the cost, plus other expenses for veterinary fees relating to the treatment of injuries, ongoing conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy, and all relevant treatment and medication, and congenital and hereditary conditions if unknown at the time of taking out the policy. Some policies also cover losing your pet to theft or straying as well as reward money and advertising a lost pet. It’s important to know that policies either have an excess (meaning you pay the first $100-plus of any treatment cost) or a co-payment arrangement,

where you share 10-30% of the costs and the insurance covers 70-90%. One final thing — and this applies to all insurance — always disclose everything. The younger, healthier and less complicated the medical history of your pet, the less you’ll pay for pet insurance. However, if you don’t declare health issues and past conditions, upon making a claim your insurer can use ‘non-disclosure’ as a reason not to pay out. It means you’ll be stuck with the bill, unable to claim on it despite having paid the premium. Declaring everything will most likely cost more in the short term but being covered for illnesses relating to those conditions will save you a lot of money later on if your pet needs treatment. The road in the sky  by Andy Bryenton

High in the Tyrolean Alps, up toward the Swiss border with Italy, you’ll find a stretch of road, which is claimed to be the best driving experience in all of Europe. Swooping back and forth in a series of dramatic switchbacks, the ribbon of tarmac has become legendary among drivers and cyclists, and not just because of its jaw-dropping scenery. It is, of course, the Stelvio Pass. So it’s a bold manufacturer who names a vehicle after this stretch of famous highway. Motorcycle makers Moto Guzzi did so in 2008, with a bike designed to carve through those flying corners. Now, fellow countrymen, Alfa Romeo have taken up the name as well — but there’s a difference. The company, flying

high with the success of the stunning Giulia sports sedan, chose to attach the name to a crossover SUV. Now, for others in the luxury marque bracket, the move to making four-wheel drives has been controversial. Alfa Romeo has a proud history in racing and a back catalogue full of hits which exemplify all that is elegant in the automaker’s art. Would their sports utility break the mould, or take the concept of a city-and-

country crossover to new places? Well, with a name like Stelvio, the only way was up. While most such vehicles strive to be cheeky and cute, the Stelvio has a certain Italian swagger about its looks, before you even turn the key. It’s a bit of cliche to talk about the ‘passion’ built into Italian cars, but it shows through in the way that the Stelvio is marketed, let alone the willing power from both of the engine choices available under the hood. For the record, that’s a two-litre turbocharged petrol delivering up to 276hp and 400Nm of torque, or a practical 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel delivering 206hp and a hefty 470Nm.

Not long ago, 276 horses were the realm of Japanese turbo tuners — now it’s joined seamlessly to an eightspeed auto and presented in an SUV. That makes the Stelvio quick, and we must say it’s good looking too. There’s the sense that classic Alfa grille looks a bit like a v-neck shirt with the badge as a disco medallion, but that’s part of the fun. This crossover talks a good game, and it delivers as well. For those who are in the market for an Evoque, F-Pace, XC60 or similar up-scale 4x4, don’t look past the car which could actually handle its namesake — and put a smile on your face while doing it. ¢

Trail blazer

When it comes to flat out speed across rough terrain, the Can Am Maverick has the heritage, the race-bred pedigree and the sheer power to make you believe you’re actually in the cockpit of a low-flying jet fighter. Watching the Maverick’s masterwork of suspension in slow motion as those big knobbly tyres claw at the sand and dirt is an engineering class in itself. So it’s a natural progression for the product development team at Can Am headquarters to think about applying this race-winning formula to a different discipline. Throw into the mix the toughness and nimble handling of their farming and hunting off roaders — made for less speed and more practicality — and you have one of the best ideas wrapped around an internal combustion engine since Ford put a v8 in the first edition Mustang. The new Maverick Trail is only 50 inches wide — that’s 1.27 metres and that means rocky, twisting trails are its natural habitat. Still seating two in fully roll-cage enclosed comfort, this little firecracker is designed to inspire confidence with a whole lot of low-down torque from a 1000cc, 75 horsepower Rotax engine fed air through highmounted filtered intakes to keep clear of the dust. There’s also the option of a 51hp 800cc mill, but that famous one litre power plant comes with a list of racing wins as long as your arm

in other chassis, so adventure seekers might seek out the bigger displacement for more thrills. The Maverick Trail is not just easy to transport — though needless to say that small footprint works well when it’s time to put it on a trailer or up on a truck deck. The application of a deliberately feedback-rich power steering system means that there’s no struggling and sweating to wrestle with the wheel; at low speeds the system adjusts to give more of a boost, helping out when the trail is choppy or in tight corners. This is a machine for the explorers, the trail blazers, those who want to really get out into the wilderness and need a machine as unstoppable as the legendary drover’s horse of days gone by. Knowing this, Can Am have even fitted an upgraded magneto for additional electric power — pick and choose from winches, lights and other accessories to make this off road machine truly personalised.
