With his wife Pam, he started the Joshua Foundation helping young people and was last year one of three Selwynbased Kiwibank Local Heroes. His success he says is measured in those of the young people helped by the foundation, his community work in Vanuatu, and within Paparua Men’s Prison. “I served 25 years in the Defence Force rising through the ranks and holding numerous command and management appointments, with the highlight being a deployment to Sierra Leone as a United Nations Military Observer. “Though I am now retired from fulltime service, I remain in the Reserves as Officer Commanding, Canterbury Company based in Christchurch. “It was during that active service I realised the skills I had developed as a soldier and officer could be put to use motivating young people and setting them on a path — largely of their own volition — to personal achievement. “And, so in 2005 Pam and I formed the Joshua Foundation.” Thay work closely with the Ministry of Social Development and Work and Income. “We wanted specifically designed programmes that target youth within our community, based upon sound ethical values and moral principles that empower youth to fulfill ambitions and dreams through sound leadership, confidence, courage, clarity, integrity and character. We are addressing selfdestructive behaviours in young people.”

“The Joshua Foundation was the first accredited Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award provider in New Zealand, and the principles of the programmes are used successfully in Vanuatu, as well as in Paparua, and is making a real difference to vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in our community. “In addition, The Joshua Foundation currently delivers leadership training, character development and Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award programmes to a large number of schools and colleges in Canterbury. “All Joshua Foundation programmes are invigorating, interactive and

fun, with the aim of engaging and challenging young people mentally and physically while providing them with a sense of self-belief and — ultimately — achievement. “It is those achievements, their achievements, which are for us the ultimate accolades.” Joshua Foundation is an Approved Child Youth and Family Services organisation, and a member of the Canterbury Youth Workers Collective. p One local family will remember Christmas 2017 for the turkey — but not because he was the main course! The largest Turkey Theresa Murray had ever seen appeared in her driveway the Friday before Christmas. He was described as ‘at least three feet tall with beautiful black, white and metallic coloured feathers’. “I had a giggle to myself,” Says Theresa, “thinking ‘does he not realise he is an endangered species at this time of year’? The avian guest stayed over for Christmas day (where ham was on the menu), entertaining guests young and old before being reunited with his owners. Far from being a seasonal meal, this turkey is a year-round pet who has a ‘Mrs Turkey’ and a brood of chicks ready to hatch soon.

Do you know this man? u Police are calling on the community to come forward with any information relating to an aggravated robbery that happened at Trevino’s Tavern, Christchurch, early on Sunday, January 14 as part of their continued enquiry. Local scientist honoured u by Mike Isle

Dr Garth Carnaby is no stranger to awards and honours. However, the Lincoln resident admits that he was ‘thrilled and honoured’ to be included in the New Year Honours List. Dr Carnaby is now a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to science and governance. “I have worked in both fields, as well as earlier in wool science, so it is particularly gratifying to be recognised for both new areas,” he said. Dr Carnaby, who holds multiple doctorates from universities here and overseas, is widely known in science circles for his work as a fibre scientist with a particular interest in wool. Dr Carnaby has ser ved as Entrepreneur in Residence at Lincoln University. He was also, from 2004 to 2009, chair of the Marsden Fund. Garth Carnaby was born in Southbridge and attended Southbridge Primary School, and then Christchurch Boys’ High. He studied textile physics at the University of New South Wales and at Leeds University where he got his initial PhD. Dr Carnaby returned to New Zealand in 1976, and in 2008 was elected President of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Dr Carnaby has made significant contributions to research and in the governance of organisations that promote and promulgate the sciences in all their forms. Already a Member of the Order of Merit for his earlier work on wool, this is now why he has been honoured with his Companionship of the Order. However, it is not his alone; he wants to share it with his wife, Kate. “I am the first to acknowledge that Kate has enabled me to spend the time often away from the family and she has certainly over those years taken the bulk of responsibility for raising our children Judith, Harriet and Alan. “This is certainly an honour I share with her and them.” Also included in the 2018 New Year Honours List was Darfield resident Mark Stewart. Property values remain fairly stable Property values in the Christchurch area remain relatively stable in the closing months of 2017, according to the latest QV House Price Index statistics. Christchurch city values have remained stable, dropping slightly by 0.1% or $541 over the past year from an average value of $494,247 in December 2016 to $493,706 in December 2017. Values have increased slightly by 0.4% over the last quarter. Meanwhile, growth remains strong across Canterbury’s regions. The Waimakariri District up 1.7% yearon-year and 1.5% over the past three months; while Selwyn values increased slightly 0.3% year-on-year and 0.7% over the past quarter. QV Christchurch Proper ty Consultant, Hamish Collins said: “It’s been slow and steady for the Christchurch housing market during 2017. We have seen less activity than in previous years as heat comes

out of post-earthquake market, and overall the market has normalised after the earthquakes. “The high level of housing stock on the market has given purchasers more options, and vendors are finding they need to adjust their expectations from a moving post-earthquake market to a slower environment. “First home buyers remain active in the market as do those purchasing ‘as is where is’ properties with existing unrepaired earthquake damage. “Those in the investor market remain anxious about potential changes to regulations such as insulation, building warrant of fitness and taxes, and investors have also been hamstrung by LVR and bank lending restrictions throughout the year.”

Summer camping on offer again

Trust opens historical site

Camping is back on the agenda this summer holiday period at Coes Ford and Chamberlains Ford after a lengthy cleanup following winter floods, which made a mess of both areas.

One of Greendale’s earliest settler’s dreams is a step closer to being realised with the opening of the TW Adams Arboretum — the first stage in a three part project spearheaded by the Greendale Community Trust.

The campgrounds were in a sorry state, requiring an incredible amount of work and perseverance over five months to have the campgrounds ready for summer, reserves officer Chris Burke said: “We are really pleased to have these two important campgrounds ready for the public to enjoy. After the floods, we went straight into Coes once the water subsided. We cleaned all of the silt from the main toilet block and removed debris from the fences — just for the area to be reflooded another five times over the coming months.” The council also brought together some biodiversity experts to provide community help, removing river debris from plants and staking up flattened shrubs. “At Chamberlains Old Bridge Rd entrance, we repaired broken fence lines and removed river debris, rebased and graded shingle driveways as the current shingle drives had completely been washed away, leaving only a soil base. “We cleaned out the toilet areas and tested all equipment, checked the stability of all of the trees and removed any that had been compromised,” Chris says. The NZ Army also pitched in at Chamberlains, by providing 100

personnel for four hours through one of its youth programmes. The volunteers re-staked plants, removed river debris, hand picked stones off the turf areas and put topsoil around the roots of eroded shrubs. At Chamberlains Bethels Rd entrance, river shingle that had been washed into area from the flood was removed, a large scour in the ground was filled in, the entire site was relevelled and the driveway was fixed. At both sites there are currently small areas that are still not ready to be opened to the public. At Coes, on the south side of the ford, the toilet block needs to be relevelled on a raised mound. ¢

Stage two and three of the trust’s plan for the arboretum include a walkway through the nursery block and fields to the Greendale domain, and then along to the Greendale Church where significant development of the horse paddock will include a labyrinth. An open day and picnic will be held at the arboretum on Sunday, January 21 at noon. Hands joins water committee u by Kent Caddick

Malvern Community Board member Megan Hands is one of 14 new community members to be appointed to Environment Canterbury’s water zone committee to help protect and improve the region’s freshwater systems. A further 11 people have been reappointed to the zone committees. Environment Canterbury councillor Tom Lambie said he was delighted so many people put their hand up to help make a difference to the region’s water. “The calibre of the candidates was also impressive and we’ve ended up with a really good balance of community representatives who are keen to make a positive difference to local water management. Megan Hands of Darfield, has been appointed to the Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee. She joins another newcomer Paul Hodgson WITH Selwyn District Council representative, Murray Lemon. As well as being a member of the Malvern Community Board Ms Hands is also a member of Young Farmers, Federated Farmers and the New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management. Three new appointees were made to join SDC rep Debra Hassan on the Christchurch West Melton Water Zone Committee. They were Helen Caley, Gareth Oddy and Carly Sluys.

The refresh process replaces or renews community members whose three-year term is completed. The committees are joint committees of local councils and Environment Canterbury, and all include community members and local runanga representatives. ¢

Water health warnings Health warnings are in force for a number of waterways around Selwyn. The Canterbury District Health Board has issued health warnings after the discovery of toxic algal blooms in the Selwyn River and in Lake Ellesmere. The potentially toxic blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) was found in the Selwyn River at the Whitecliffs Domain and at Glentunnel, while a health warning was issued for Lake Ellesmere after high concentrations of blue-green algae (planktonic cyanobacteria) were discovered after testing. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink said people and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid the area of the Selwyn River at Whitecliffs Domain and Glentunnel until the health warning has been lifted. “Phormidium mats have been found in the Selwyn River and some of these mats are detaching and accumulating at the sides of the river,” Dr Pink said. “The algae look like dark brown to black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals. “Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips.” He said the Selwyn District Council as the drinking water supplier is

Libraries serve up summer fun u by Andy Bryenton

Selwyn District libraries have been busy serving up fun all summer long, with programmes designed to engage young people with the joy of reading. After all, there’s nothing much nicer than relaxing in the shade in the heat of a summer’s day with a good book. Now kids have the chance to create their very own books, ebooks and ‘zines with the series of ‘Think, Create, Write’ events. From the pop-culture niche publications called ‘zines — mini magazines which first came out of the underground music scene — through to picture and story books, there’s options aplenty for school-aged children attending to make their mark. If you’ve ever wanted to see your work published, here’s the chance! With successful events already held at Lincoln and Rolleston libraries, there are two workshops left — Darfield library on Monday, 22 January from 10.00am to 11.00am, and Leeston library on Tuesday, 23 January from 2.00pm to 3.00pm. Find out how to turn a cool idea into a digital or hard copy book, with words, illustrations and all the finishing touches! Also appearing in local libraries and community spaces this summer is a

ON THE FARM

Teddy bear’s time to shine u by Andy Bryenton

‘I don’t think my name will be of much assistance in promoting toy bears, but you are welcome to use it’. Those were the words of United States President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt, who was the inspiration for the first Teddy Bear when he saved a real live bear from being shot by hunters. Mr Roosevelt’s bear helped him win re-election, and was so popular that his political opponent William Taft tried to make his own cuddly toy, Billy the Opossum. This month Teddy bears in the Selwyn district are coming out of the toy boxes and playrooms and into the sun, with a couple of special events planned for them. First up is a chance for Teddy bears to get together for a night of fun and mischief at local libraries. The day after comes the Teddy Bear’s Picnic, a tradition dating back to 1907 when the catchy tune was first written. Oddly, it wasn’t until 1933 that Jimmy Kennedy wrote those famous verses about ‘going down to the woods today’. If you’d like to bring your teddy bear along for an overnight library adventure, bring him or her along to your local library in Rolleston, Leeston, Lincoln or Darfield by 2pm. Come back the next day to find out what happened overnight — it’s an established scientific fact that teddy bears can come to life if left alone in libraries, near all those books about real bears, though only if nobody

p Picnic goers from last year

is watching. There will be stories, fun green-screen selfies, and Teddy-related fun and games for junior bear keepers. That same day — Saturday the 20th — marks the great New World Rolleston Teddy Bears Picnic, held at the Rolleston Community centre from 1pm. Expect faeries, face painting, a bouncy castle, and of course lots of bear-themed picnic fun. To find out more about these free events, visit selwyn.govt.nz. Isn’t it great that President Roosevelt was wrong? More than 110 years after the advent of the stuffed cuddly bear, his name lives on in the form of the most popular and beloved children’s toy ever. That’s far more fun than politics. ¢

Pool repairs leave options open

Summer fun in the sun

The annual Summer in Selwyn programme is proving even more popular this year and Council have promised there is still a lot more to come.

u by Andy Bryenton

It’s the busiest time of year for aquatic sports and recreation, but it’s also the best time of year for maintenance staff to make necessary repairs to the 25 metre long lap pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston.

The need to replace damaged tiles is at the heart of the matter, spurring a brief closure of the lap swimming pool from January 17, through to January 19. Despite only a small number of tiles needing replacement, completing the work to the highest standard requires draining the entire pool. Everything will be back in order for Saturday, January 20 meaning that in the three-day window of repairs, swimmers have the option to relocate to other community pools. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre’s other popular attractions will remain open throughout the repair process, with only the lap pool affected. That’s great news for the many families enjoying a dip in

the summer weather, as well as kids learning to swim and those making use of the centre’s hydrotherapy facilities. With repairs finished well before the end of the month, the schedule for swim school — starting in time for school term one on January 29 — remains uninterrupted. In other pool news, the big Southbridge Pool Party is about to happen again on January 28, following up on massively popular fun days in 2016 and 2017 alike. It’s free to come along and join in with a sausage sizzle, games, pool inflatables and more for the whole family. Come along to the community pool in Southbridge from 2pm to 4 pm to get amongst it. ¢

Already off to a spectacular start, the series of events planned for the continuation of the programme is sure to appeal to all age groups and interests Still to come are the always popular Picnic in the Park, the Lake Crichton Series Triathlon and Duathlon (run by Selwyn Sports Trust), the Faringdon Pool Party and Faringdon Skate Jam. Lifestyle n’ Farming

From the autobahn to the wilderness u by Andy Bryenton

When it was first suggested that Mercedes-Benz were set to produce a ute, the reaction of many auto enthusiasts was sheer disbelief. The German juggernaut of style and sophistication tackling an auto artform best summed up by the brutal, bellicose and big Ford F150? Ferrari may as well have declared they were building a submarine, or Rolls-Royce a motor scooter. On closer inspection the choice for Mercedes to design and build their new X Class range comes from a place of sanity and pedigree. The G Wagon is, after all, a superb off-roader, used by military forces and Arabic royalty. Our own army slogs through mud and snow in Mercedes-badged heavy trucks. So why shouldn’t the lads from the silver star brand one-up their fellow countrymen at Volkswagen with the Amarok? Why shouldn’t Mercedes seek to topple

the Ford Ranger, in the same way Ford slapped the Prancing Horse down at Le Mans with the GT40? Well, now the X-Class has landed, in three levels of appointment and with a design echoing the Hilux or Ranger along the sides but very distinctly Mercedes in the front. This hearkening to the proportions of other flagship utes may simply be a byproduct of functionality — a high bonnet line, roomy cabin, large wellside tray and imposing wheel arches

Lifestyle n’ Farming

Planning for beef and lamb success u by Andy Bryenton

Farming today is more than ever about having a top notch plan — data is as valuable to the modern process of raising the best beasts as water and pasture. So it’s good to know that for the big plans — those which are required at a local government level — that the industry you provide for has your back. Many local farmers will have been recently contacted by Environment Canterbury regarding an application for consent to farm. Like any of the consent paperwork which brackets most modern business, this can be a headache without guidance, but thankfully for beef and lamb farmers the representative organisation for their industry has been thinking ahead. Beef + Lamb New Zealand have a plan which conforms to the requirements of ECan’s consent application process, of which a completed farm environment plan from an approved provider is a vital part. All levy payers who are part of this overarching organization are invited to attend free workshops in the coming weeks where industry professionals will walk you through the steps required, making the process hassle-free and simple.

There will be two workshops held in the local area — the first takes place in Ashburton on Wednesday, 31 January at the A and P Showgrounds. Come to the showgrounds committee room upstairs at 10am, with the event lasting until 3pm in the afternoon. A second workshop will be hosted at the Darfield Community Centre on February 1, and once again runs from 10am until 3pm. Beef + Lamb New Zealand advise that it’s a good idea to RSVP — visit them online or call 0800 BEEFLAMB for further information. A lunch will be provided, and all farmers need to bring is two copies of their farm map, and an overseer budget if possible. Beef + Lamb’s experts will fill in the information needed to cut through the paperwork and make 2018 get off to a great start. ¢

Green waste gets the chop u by Andy Bryenton

On the lifestyle block, as on the working farm, green waste disposal is a constant chore. There’s always some form of foliage to prune back, and when it comes to the limbs of larger trees, this often means it’s time to head to the hire centre for a wood chipper. If the workload is becoming too heavy to justify trips back and forth, or if there’s a large area to be pruned back or disposed of, having all that chipped wood to lay in garden beds can kill two birds with one stone. Which brings us to the point of actually owning one of the handy little machines permanently. If you have an extensive treescape or shelterbelts, it’s not a bad idea to invest in a wood

chipper for future chores. Prices are more reasonable than ever as the market fills up with imports, but there are some pro tips which should not be overlooked when buying a wood chipper for your lifestyle block or small farm. We asked a professional landscape maintenance operator what to look out for to avoid the lemons and pups. The first thing to measure is the size of the jobs you’re likely to undertake. Only mulching down small shrubs and softer stuff? A unit under 10 horsepower will do fine. For now, electric models lack the punch of petrol or diesel, so look for a unit with a reputable brand of motor. This becomes even more important when looking at models apt to chomp through branches which measure more than about 5cm thick, or about half the This 15” Bridgestone All Terrain SUV tyre

snap for well-known brand engines too. When it comes to the working parts of the chipper, make sure you buy a self — feeding model. This is both easier and safer than having to force each load through the chute. As a general rule, the more blades are at work at the ‘business end’ of the machine the better, so look for a unit with high quality blades and plenty of them. Some units now offer electric start, but a pull cord action is fine on smaller models, so long as it’s reliable and easy to use. If you pick a winner, pruning chores will be a breeze, and there’ll be less need for burn offs and trips to the dump! ¢

width of your hand. For these, a bigger beefier engine is needed, maybe even diesel if we’re talking wrist-thick boughs and branches. Look for engine names you’ve heard of — you may find units powered by Briggs and Stratton, Honda or even Hyundai engines. Check the details and ask about the quality of the bearings, and if the motor is a modern OHV or overhead valve type. These will last longer and work stronger. It’s OK if you haven’t heard of the engineering firm who built the other parts of the chipper, but if you haven’t heard of the engine manufacturer, really quiz the seller on its quality. Keeping pets cool in summer u by Andy Bryenton

It can be difficult to cope with the heat when summer really kicks it into high gear — and that’s just for us humans. Imagine what it’s like to feel the full blast of the sun when you’re born with a full time fur coat! Here are some top tips from vets to help keep your pets cool and happy this time of year. Of course, water, shade and a bit of change to the usual routines are the key. Lots of drinking water is essential for all animals, but dogs and even cats can be seen literally panting in the heat, using up moisture in the same way we would do by sweating in order to keep cool. Fresh, clean water in bowls all around the property are a must, and will likely benefit wildlife as well. Don’t forget special pet sunscreen for white nosed

dogs and cats! Dogs may want to have a dip this time of year, so a plastic clamshell toddler’s pool could prove an asset. With a bit of shallow water it can be a drinking source and a cool bath if placed in the shade. Speaking of shade, this is no season to leave any animals outdoors with none available. Even ‘outside dogs’ need a cool spot this time of year, and caged birds, bunnies in hutches, etc should be moved out of the midday sun. When walking dogs this time of year, try to head out early or late. The sheer force of the sun can make beach sand and footpaths, let alone asphalt and tar road crossings painful and dangerous. Burned paws are a serious injury and can become infected, and humans wearing shoes can’t easily judge the heat of a

surface. Also on the subject of feet, did you know that many animals and even birds regulate their temperature through their feet? If the mercury rises into the low 30s, a mist of water or a dip just for the paws of your dog or cat could do the trick. Even kitties who hate water will feel some relief. Auto & Marine

No half measures u by Andy Bryenton

Summer stokes up the desire to hit the open road on two wheels, making many a would-be motorcyclist dust off their plans to sit that learner’s test and experience the freedom of life on a bike. The new LAMS learner approved motorcycle regime puts a wider range than ever before in front of first time riders, and recently that selection has been joined by the biggest name of them all. For 2018, Harley Davidson roll out both a 500cc street-dominating urban bike, and a little step up for the experienced user on the same platform. The first is the now well established Street 500, with the mission to beat commuter traffic with style and attitude. For the world’s most well-known brand of two-wheelers, it’s been a surprisingly hard niche to crack. The Street 500 has had to satisfy both the aesthetic and auditory cues of a ‘real Harley’, while taking on the dominant mid-sized Japanese bikes which vie for the crown of commuter king. Stack this classic-looking bike up against the likes of Suzuki’s Gladius or Yamaha’s MT-07 and you’ll see a very different beast. Low and menacing with blacked out components, the Street 500 boasts a super low centre of gravity and plenty of torque to make city riding effortless,

even on those tricky uphill breaks away from the lights. ABS brakes inspire confidence, as does the water-cooled engine — radiators are not usually a Harley Davidson standard, but here the addition of liquid cooling means that getting stuck in gridlock won’t blow your top. There are certain crusty old bikers who will moan that a 500cc machine is ‘not a real Harley’ — like those snobbish Porsche owners in the 1980s who dismissed the 928 for not having a rear engine. But with the looks and the attitude of its bigger stablemates, this small Harley Davidson is the perfect stepping stone to the world of classic cruising. Conveniently placed just above LAMS level is the Street Rod 750, with a bigger, more powerful engine, drag bars and bar end mirrors for a cafe-racer retro style. ¢
