TREE STUMP REMOVAL

It is one of a number of health warnings in place across Canterbury and the Selwyn district for lakes and rivers including the Selwyn River at Glentunnel. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink said people and animals, particularly dogs, should avoid Lake Forsyth until the health warning has been lifted. “The type of cyanobacteria currently present in high concentrations is Anabaena, which typically forms green globules that float in the water column. “The algal bloom can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals, and people should avoid contact with the water until further notice. “Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, and tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips. If you experience any of these symptoms visit your doctor immediately and please let your doctor know if you have had contact with the lake water,” Dr Pink said. “No one should drink the water from the lake at any time. Boiling the water

“Fire activity has been lower than usual over the holiday break as conditions were cool for the time of year,” Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said. However, he said the district is starting to experience hotter weather and more windy conditions. “Combined with the amount of vegetation in our district as a result of a wet spring, this creates conditions where fires can spread quickly if they are not prevented.” Mr Marshall said a number of recent fires have started as a result of

electric fences coming into contact with vegetation during windy conditions. “Property owners can reduce the risk of these types of fires starting by either switching off electric fences, especially in strong winds, or trimming vegetation near fences,” Mr Marshall said. “In hot weather, fires can also start as a result of machinery, such as lawnmowers, being operated. We would recommend choosing a cooler day to operate machinery and having a water source on hand to extinguish a fire if needed.” ¢

“Pre-match entertainment will include two Rippa rugby games between Darfield and Southbridge teams,” Mr Riach said. “The ballboys have been selected locally through a Farmlands competition, and match officials include Darfield Division 1 player and Ellesmere referee Sam O’Reilly as Subs Controller for the Crusaders; fellow Ellesmere referee Juan Shalfoon as sideline manager; and Darfield High School student Joseph Feltell as referee for one of the Rippa rugby games.” Currently the Crusaders and Highlanders share the Farmlands Cup after last year’s match at Waimumu finished in a 19-19 draw. “Farmlands shareholders, local junior rugby clubs

and Crusaders season ticket holders have had an opportunity to purchase tickets already, and the remainder of tickets are now available to the public for purchase,” Mr Riach said. Farmlands chief executive Peter Reidie said it was great to see the Farmlands Cup return after last year’s match, which was played in front of a sell-out crowd. “The Farmlands Cup is all about bringing rugby back to the grassroots, the local communities which foster our future rugby stars,” Mr Reidie said. “The Darfield Rugby Club was an obvious choice to host this event and we’re proud to bring super rugby teams to the country.” ¢

Work is set to begin on the building, which is owned by Orion, in early February, so the gallery will close from the end of this month until work is completed. Malvern Community Arts Council’s arts administrator Rose Gerard said the work will take around five weeks, and they hope to reopen in the middle of March. “The repairs are necessary to ensure the gallery building is well-maintained and safe for the future,” Ms Gerard said. “We will pack up and store all gallery contents in our storage container, which is securely locked and waterproof, and is

located within a secured yard in Darfield. “Artist members have the option either to allow their artworks currently in the gallery to be stored in the container, or they may wish to retrieve their artworks and store them themselves.” Ms Gerard said if artists are happy for their artworks to be stored in the gallery container, they do not need to do anything, but if they wish to retrieve their artworks for private storage they need to be collected no later than January 28. Artists wanting to collect their work should contact Rose Gerad by email, mcac@clear.co.nz, or phone her on 021 235 0954. ¢

Despite the inclement weather, hundreds descended on the Rolleston Community Centre to enjoy the town’s annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic last week. The event was due to be held on Rolleston Reserve but as the weather bomb moved across the South Island, the decision was made to move the event indoors. The Teddy Bear’s Picnic was the first in the Selwyn District Council’s

Cancer support group bowled over u by Kent Caddick

A great turnout for the Malvern Cancer Support Group fundraising day at the Darfield Bowling Club. The weather played ball as more than 100 people turned out on a sunny afternoon to raise $2,340 for the support group that helps people through their cancer treatment. Malvern Cancer Support Group chair Elaine Guy said the money raised from this fundraiser is invaluable. “The money will mainly be used to help us to support those families with a driving service to oncology appointments for the duration of their treatments. “The suppor t group is enormously grateful to Mrs Nancy Hayton, patron of Malvern Bowls for sponsoring this event and Darfield Bowling Club for hosting it, as well as all from the local community who turned up to take part on the day. “A huge amount of work was done before the event and behind the scenes by a fabulous group of people, but in particular thanks must go to Margaret Gray and Pat Maxwell who managed to pull it all together, even Mother Nature came to the party as the sun shone on us.” The day took the format of a fun-filled afternoon of lawn bowling

games. Newcomers, children and experienced bowlers all took to the green for a relaxed opportunity to show their skills, or lack of them, and impart their bowling knowledge. “This was followed by a wonderful afternoon tea provided by Darfield, Coalgate, Kirwee and West Melton bowling club members,” Mrs Guy said. “In the proceeding weeks both Margaret and Pat had spent the days canvassing the Malvern community businesses for donations for a raffle, and the generosity shown was both exceptional and humbling. We had about 100 raffle prizes drawn on the day.” The Malvern Cancer Support Group covers the geographical area from West Melton to west of Springfield, and from the Waimakariri to the Rakaia rivers. Mrs Guy said they also provide information and support, including baking and groceries, to families who have someone with cancer. “Amongst other additional things, our members also help with the sewing and knitting of turbans for those who may need it.” ¢

School holidays are almost over and it’s time to start planning those dreaded school lunches again. What most parents think of as a chore should really be thought of as an opportunity — a chance to get our children to fall in love with nutritious and delicious food. Depending on how long children are away from the house, up to 50% of a child’s total food intake for the day is packed into their lunchbox. Lunchbox fillers often seem healthy but in reality are high in refined sugar and unhealthy fats. Research strongly supports the relationship between poor food choices and increased rates of truancy, poor learning, decreased concentration and disruptive behaviour. Putting together a nutritious lunchbox full of goodness and one that will be beneficial to your child’s learning is easier than you think. Whole foods are best. Whole foods are those that are natural and have minimal processing. Different types of breads can help to keep lunchboxes interesting — try rolls, pita breads or roti. Left over rice or pasta in a small container make a great sandwich replacement. Homemade popcorn, homemade muffins, crackers

and pikelets also make good lunchbox choices. Fruit and vegetables are lunchbox essentials. Lean meats, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds and dairy products provide the body with protein, a nutrient essential for growth, repair and brain development. Fill the freezer with homemade muffins and baking, pikelets, mini frittata or quiche. Buy carrots, celery or capsicum in bulk and chop into bite size pieces and store in the fridge. If you suspect an allergy, speak to your GP or a registered dietitian to avoid eliminating foods unnecessarily

as this could impact your child’s growth and development. Most schools or childcare facilities will have rules around the exclusion of some foods, eg nuts or eggs. Business

Choosing the right employee Hiring a new employee is a make or break situation and can make a big difference to the operation and success of your business. Firstly it is important to clearly define the role that you would like the future employee to fill. Making a list of day-to-day tasks that you need the employee to do is also helpful and gives you and the potential staff member a clear idea of what is expected of them. Having a general idea of what personality type would suit the position can also help to narrow down the list of potential employees when trying to make a decision and also when deciding who to interview. When making an offer of employment, check the person is legally able to work in New Zealand and explain about the 90 day trial period if you chose to use one. Take some time to discuss the conditions you are offering such as hours, location of work, salary, training requirements, overtime, benefits and holidays.

Once you have chosen your new staff member, make sure you both sign a written employment agreement and provide them with a written role description before they commence work. Allow them to take the agreement away to read carefully before signing. Organise anything the new employee may require to do their job before the first day of employment. Have a plan in mind about what tasks you would like them to complete on their first day and think about their induction process. Make sure they are aware of the company policies and have access to their emails where relevant, work tools and safety equipment. Introduce your new staff member to any other employees they will be working with. This will make their first day more comfortable and will make the transition period smoother for all involved. Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Dispatch from the front lines u by Andy Bryenton

Remember when the big three of German automotive manufacturing went to war over horsepower? We were shocked, then stunned, then awestruck by the 400, 500 and even 600hp on tap in successive BMWs, Mercedes and Audis. Even VW got into the mix with their potent W8 Passat — the half-jokingly nicknamed ‘half a Veyron’. There’s been similar action occurring of late in the world of off-road vehicles — side-by-sides as well as quads. Now the gauntlet has well and truly been laid down by Polaris, who has just upped the power packed into their Sportsman 1000 XP to match that of a modestlysized road car. That’s right — in an age when you can purchase a four-door hatchback with 70 horses under the bonnet, Polaris is offering a quad bike with 90. Now, this isn’t just all raw machismo. Sure, in terms of grunt and pulling power, 90 horses is a nice number. But the real story here is how Polaris has made all that on-tap power — delivered by an electronically fuel injected ProStar engine — actually reach the ground in a manageable form. For starters, there are three throttle settings, much as you might find in a road-going supercar. For work and standard use there are settings which restrict the full-bore output of the big 1000’s mill, but when you want to open up the taps, a third ‘performance’ setting allows free rein to all 90 of those horses. The other thing which has had to be modified to accommodate all this power

is the chassis and suspension layout. Starting from the ground up, Polaris engineers have overhauled the skeleton of the Sportsman, creating what they call a Rider Active Design. Prioritising a low centre of gravity and stable handling, the new layout also includes arched front A-arms for extra ground clearance and improved approach angles front and rear for fording streams and ditches. You can also expect power everything, from progressive power steering to a Bluetooth-capable digital instrument

cluster. Polaris is calling it the most powerful ATV ever — and barring some one-off sporting and racing models, they may just be right. In practical terms, this machine is made for (as the name suggests) sportspeople — those who want to grab the outdoors and shake it by the scruff. But it’s a halo product too — a test bed for cutting-edge tech which is sure to flow through to farming quads as the war for the rural market heats up again. ¢

Farming

The first steps to a farming future

Do you need heavy duty help to get the job done?

u by Andy Bryenton

As schools prepare to open their doors for the 2017 intake, many students will be questioning the direction their higher education will follow. With a bewildering array of courses on offer in subjects as abstract as philosophy and as high-tech as three dimensional animation, it can be hard to pinpoint a clear path to a lifelong career. One of the areas that was once left behind by academia was the vital work of farming. Modern agriculture is no crude and rustic task — as anyone who has lived or worked on a modern farm knows, the modern farmer must be an astute business owner with a knowledge of animal biology, botany, soil science and more. New technologies mean that farmers may deal with more advanced — and more expensive — machinery than their counterparts in urban jobs. That’s before addressing sustainability and future ecology, staff management and finance. The best way to learn all of the skills which will build better farmers and farm staff has turned out to be an old idea remade — the concept of the apprenticeship. While purely academic learning is great for subjects like mathematics and literature, farming is by its nature hands-on, and being side by side with an experienced pro can make all the difference. That’s why PrimaryITO — the industry training organisation for the primary sector — is so enthusiastic

Warning on irrigator waste Environment Canterbury has issued a reminder that water use is vital as summer rolls on and that means good control of farm irrigation. The regional council says farmers need to be aware of where their water is going and irrigate the grass — not the road. Principal resource management advisor, Richard Purdon, said irrigation onto roads, particularly gravel roads, is not only a waste of water but also has the potential to create safety issues for motorists. “It is the surprise element and the force of the water that could easily startle a motorist,” he said. “It is especially dangerous for those on motorcycles.” Irrigation consent holders are responsible for the use of water that is applied to their properties. “Resource consent conditions authorise the use of water to a consented piece of land, not to run to waste. We understand it can be difficult on very windy days, but hardstand areas such as state highways and rural roads are not consented or authorised to be irrigated.” Irrigation system operators must monitor the use of their water and equipment to make sure the water is used in the way that was authorised by their resource consent. “All irrigators should ensure that their water allocations are used diligently and

not wasted, especially in a dry season. We will continue to monitor unauthorised use of water, utilising our new locally based water zone officers, and deal with it on a case-by-case basis,” he said. Irrigation New Zealand chief executive Andrew Curtis said the two main culprits for water going over-boundary were the end guns on pivot irrigators and travelling irrigators set up too close to roads. “Watering onto roads creates a significant safety hazard, so it’s really important for irrigators to ensure they water within their property boundaries. “My advice is to ensure end guns are set and operating correctly and regularly checked. When you set up your travelling irrigator always have a set-back distance from the road,” he said. Farmers should ensure they’re being responsible with their water. “Aside from the safety issue, people don’t like seeing water being wasted by being sprayed onto roads. “Farmers who irrigate do so under strict regulatory regimes so it’s important they justify their use of water

by being efficient and responsible with it,” Andrew said. Anyone experiencing spray on the road that is clearly coming from an irrigation

system should contact Environment Canterbury on 0800 324 836. If there is immediate danger to road users they should contact the police. ¢

Envirotown Trust gearing up for Earth Hour u by Dave Fitzjohn, Lincoln Envirotown Trust project manager

Lincoln Envirotown Trust wishes everyone a Happy New Year and hopes everybody is looking forward to 2017. We head immediately into a busy year as we run our Earth Hour events to encourage environmental awareness. Earth Hour this year is to be celebrated on March 25 and we would encourage everyone to switch off their lights on this night to participate in the symbolic resource saving that we all need to be aware of. The first Earth Hour event will be led by Kim Hill with her ‘Hot Topic’. This year the well-known radio personality will be conducting her normal vigorous

discussion with panellists and audience on the topic: ‘Water — a global issue affecting New Zealand’. The event is held in the Stewart Building of Lincoln University and all are invited to attend and are guaranteed an interesting and stimulating evening. Doors open at 6.30pm and entry is by $5 koha which includes refreshments. There is a cash bar but you may also visit the mobile brewery in the Stewart Foyer and enjoy free samples of a new beer brewed by The Laboratory in Lincoln.
