LAWA samples popular swimming spots weekly during the summer to determine the presence of such nasties as toxic algae, faecal matter and bacteria risk. They publish their findings on the LAWA website and there is also reference to it on the local regional council’s Environment Canterbury website. Overall, LAWA monitors 700 sites throughout New Zealand. In Selwyn, between the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers LAWA monitors eight sites, six of which — including five on the Selwyn River — currently get a clean bill of health and are safe to swim in. However two sites, Lakeside Domain at Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere and Waimakariri River at Thompsons Road, are deemed at present to be unsuitable for swimming. Although the majority of Selwyn’s swimming holes are safe and suitable for swimming LAWA still encourages caution when using them. They recommend regularly checking their website for the current water quality of favourite swimming holes; avoiding swimming near potential contamination sources such as flocks of birds and waste water and storm water outlets; avoiding swimming for at least two days after prolonged rain; and keeping a constant lookout for potential hazards such as strong currents, submerged objects and steep drop-offs. They even have advice for dog-owners. Toxic algae can be fatal for dogs. LAWA

MARGARET’S GOLDEN TOURS
The call by Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council for public feedback on two proposed bus trial services between Leeston and Christchurch and Darfield and Christchurch has drawn 200 submissions from Leeston and 189 from Darfield. Environment Canterbury senior manager public transport Stewart Gibbon said the councils needed to know if the community agreed there is a need for a daily commuter service. Mr Gibbon said Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council were looking for input from the community as to whether they would use such a service, as well as the times and pick up/drop off locations for the trial services that would best meet their needs. Selwyn District Council asset manager transportation Andrew Mazey said, “We understand these are growing communities and there is a need for improved connectivity to Christchurch for those living in Darfield and Leeston that doesn’t just rely on using private motor vehicles. The Darfield service would go via Kirwee and West Melton to the city. An Environment Canterbur y spokesperson said its public transport team was reviewing and analysing the submissions from Leeston and Darfield. They expected to have more details available by mid-January. The trial services are intended to start from January 2019 for a six-month trial period. ¢

Kennedys Bush track reopened Character dress ups
p The popular 5.3km Kennedys Bush Track on the Port Hills reopened on Easter Sunday after being closed to the public since the Port Hills fires in February 2017, allowing people to again take in the beautiful views of Selwyn from the top of the track. Christchurch City Council city services general manager, David Adamson, said council staff had worked with the neighbouring landowner to get the area around the track cleared of fire-damaged trees, and the track restored to a safe state.
p West Melton School pupils had the chance to dress up as their favourite book characters to mark Book Week in July. The week was full of book-related activities including a visit from Stig Wemyss, the voice of the Andy Griffiths audiobooks, a writing workshop with author Heather McQuillan, who writes novels and poetry for young people, and a workshop with illustrator Jenny Cooper, while Jennifer Somervell entertained the younger learners with a reading of her book The New Old Truck.
Springfield wins Pedestrian bridge reopened
p The new timber bridge in the Lincoln Esplanade Reserve reopened in April, is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Selwyn, having a 20-metre central span (the distance between two intermediate supports for a structure) and 32 metres in total length. The bridge, which crosses the Liffey Stream between Esplanade Reserve land south of Moffat Drive and Ryelands Drive, has been built by the Selwyn District Council.
p Springfield School won the highly contested primary school category in the annual Environmental Film Awards in September and students proudly displayed their winning certificate — presented to them by Selwyn District councillor John Morten. Run by Lincoln Envirotown Trust there was an overall increase in entries, and the primary age category had the highest number of entrants. “The students detailed their amazing efforts to plant natives at their school, including a request to the local fire brigade to come and water them,” said project manager Dave Fitzjohn. The growing population also welcomed new residents from Iraq, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Kenya and Nepal among others.
p One of the most poignant moments in this year’s Anzac Day services around Selwyn was a parade by members of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Trust and their horses, which passed by the homesteads of Malvern soldiers who had taken their horses to form the Canterbury Mounted Rifles brigade in the first world war. The trust and its horses took a circuitous route to the Greendale Domain to pass by several properties, which were homes to a number of local men who joined up after the outbreak of war in 1914.

Picture perfect place for a fete u by Andy Bryenton
How do you improve on the traditional fun and entertainment of a summertime fete? There’s always plenty to taste, see and do at these events, coming out of the tradition of small English village fairs which flourished from the late middle ages onward. But once you have tasty food, live music, colourful decorations and a variety of interesting stalls, what next? How about a backdrop with scenery Hollywood can’t match? Well, that’s just what the organisers of the Arthurs Pass Summer Fete have at their disposal — the stunning alpine vistas of this gateway from the MacKenzie Country to the west. Situated in our nation’s third longest established national park, the little town which marks the route of Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson’s path through the alps has plenty to celebrate, and on Saturday January 12th from 10 — 4 the village will come alive with celebration. If you’ve never ventured this far west in Canterbury, it’s a great excuse to come and see one of the most picturesque landscapes in the world. In fact, helping people enjoy this outdoor playground is the cornerstone reason for the Arthurs Pass Summer Fete — aside from the sheer enjoyment of good food, drink, music and fun on an alpine summers day. Funds raised from this event go to benefit the YMCA’s local

Lifestyle ‘n’ Farming
What’s a day off? u by Jill Dickie
“Dad, what’s a day off?” the son asked of his father, and the response, “I don’t know son, we’re farmers.” That sums up the rural lifestyle for most in New Zealand while town folk take their Christmas holiday break. Back on the farm Christmas Day was most likely a half day or thereabouts spent with the family, before shooting out the door to check the hay, just in case it was ready for raking — or even baling. Or the silage needed carting, the cows needed milking, fence breaks needed shifting or irrigation needed moving. There are no complaints, it’s accepted, it’s the lifestyle chosen, and farmers are happy to comply. In town, a day off can entail all sorts of activities and pursuits because people working a normal job usually have a few days or weeks to enjoy a total break from the work routine. That’s many days off, son! From another perspective, taking that day off from the farm and leaving someone else in charge can be hugely beneficial for all concerned. Hopping into the car and driving out to the beach, or up the river for a picnic, or even up to Arthurs Pass for the day, can restore a tired stressed perspective to a healthy

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, fireworks displays are a part of life whether living rural or close to town. The way we deal with the effects of Guy Fawkes night, as well as the following months of boom, bang, whistle and flash, is what can shape the future availability of these rockets and sparklers. Communities working together to create a public event brings people together in one place to enjoy a spectacular display bigger and brighter than what could realistically be afforded at home. In holding such an event in an area away from paddocks containing animals who may take fright keeps those animals safe from harm and their owners and carers stress free. One such safe event is the popular Rolleston display in November, where visitors paid a small fee on entry which covered the costs for the organising committee, and provided a fundraising opportunity for local clubs to sell food and drinks. Along with music on stage the night is a principal event on the Selwyn calendar, and an interesting template for other communities to mimic. In providing a public event, the potential is there for members of the

Lifestyle ‘n’ Farming
Make hay while the sun shines u by Jill Dickie
Landowners are capitalising on the flush of growth in their paddocks after the unseasonal wet, and agricultural contractors are working long hours baling the hay to take advantage of optimal conditions. The most challenging part is getting that hay delivered safely into sheds in the event of rain being forecast. For many, haymaking season is a part of life, and they have the implements on hand for making the process fast and effective. In the case of making conventionals, tractors lift bales from the tidy pile left by the accumulator onto the truck for offloading at the hay shed. On a smaller scale, the contractor will most likely drop them individually behind the baler for you to laboriously collect, though creating opportunity for getting a few friends around to help, bribed by promises of cool beverages and a barbecue afterwards. One thing to ensure however is appropriate storage, additionally if the bales have had a shower of rain, or the hay hasn’t been completely dry. Retained
moisture will create heat within the bale, which may develop mould or eventually cause the bale and its neighbours to spontaneously combust. The volume of the bale stock may be a contributing factor to heat generation, also bale density and ventilation or air flow around the stacked bales. Add into that picture a tarpaulin over the top, and you have a recipe for disaster and wasted time, effort and money. It’s a big job, making hay, and it’s a responsible job for the contractor in charge, but with careful management and ensuring it isn’t baled too green, a healthy full-looking shed will be the result! ¢

The Automobile Association is urging everyone to think about how they can help make our roads safer in 2019. For a fifth straight year the number of people killed in crashes increased in 2018, with a provisional number of 380 deaths. That continues a tragic trend of more deaths and injuries from crashes since the record low year of 2013, when 253 people died. “When people think about fatal crashes, they generally think about behaviour like someone driving drunk or at extreme speeds, but this is only part of the picture,” said AA road safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen. A study by the AA Research Foundation found that about half of fatal crashes involved extreme and reckless behaviour but the other half tended to involve ordinary everyday drivers who might make a mistake or a bad decision behind the wheel with tragic results. “To turn around the terrible increase in road deaths we don’t just need to focus

on stopping the extreme behaviour. The AA encourages everyone to think about their own behaviour on the roads and if there are things that you could do better?” Thomsen said. “The New Year is a good time to think about whether there were times in 2018 when you went too fast for the conditions, kept driving when you were tired, were distracted by other things or lost your cool behind the wheel. Along with all the big-picture
actions from the Government and authorities, improving safety needs the millions of individuals out on the roads every day to do what they can to reduce the risks. “Simple things like always wearing a seatbelt, driving to the conditions, keeping a good following distance and avoiding distractions may not seem like much but when you have millions of people doing them, they add up to make a real difference.” ¢
