“Every term we work through a different topic and learning celebration with the students. We also celebrate weekly at assembly, and this helps the children understand that their learning has a purpose,” said teacher Debbie Schnell. “At the end of the term, we put the artwork on display and invite the parents and friends from the community into the school to share our achievements with them. Last term’s theme was ‘perspective’, and the students discussed the connections and some children noted how the understanding of the topics or themes change as they get older. “We have presented the evenings for three years, and they are very

successful. The guests wander around looking at the displays, and the children get to explain what they have done and how they created their piece. “It is a lovely social time, and the pupils enjoy seeing what other classes have done as well. They understand art is to be shared and that there is a message contained in it. It gives people a social occasion as well, and it helps our students become more engaged in their learning, and it gives their education a sense of purpose “Every term is a busy and productive term for our school, and we are looking forward to next term and the events we have planned. Our staff work hard, and we appreciate the whanau that attend our celebrations.” ¢

Recycling option for plastic bags u by Mike Isle

Businesses in Selwyn are being given a chance to recycle their unused single-use plastic bags with the support of the Selwyn District Council. With the national ban on businesses distributing single-use plastic bags coming into effect on July 1, some councils in the Canterbury region have teamed up to offer businesses a second chance with their leftover bags. The programme will see councils collect the bags for free and send them to a recycling plant company for processing, with the aim of preventing large stocks of unused bags being sent to landfills. All retailers and charity shops in Selwyn that have unused stocks of clean single-use plastic bags will be able to drop them off at the Pines Resource Recovery Centre until Friday, August 2. Council solid waste manager Andrew Boyd said the council was keen to join the programme and provide a positive alternative for businesses left with unused bags.

SAFETY FIRST

“We know lots of businesses could have bags leftover. The point of the ban is to get these bags out of circulation and stop them ending up in the environment so it would have been unfortunate if it led to bags being dumped, especially before being used.” The bags must be new and be made of HDPE (supermarket type) or LDPE (usually more durable) plastic and have carry handles (including die cut handles). Degradable, biodegradable or oxodegradable bags are not included, as they cannot currently be recycled. Due to only clean and unused bags being accepted, household plastic bags are also not included in this campaign. Businesses unsure as to whether their bags are included in the ban can find information on mfe.govt.nz/ waste/plastic-bag-ban.

ON THE FARM

Titles in the bag The Allflex New Zealand Shearing and Woolhandling team dominated the 18th World Championships winning three of the six titles in France. Pride of place went to Canterbury blade shearers Allan Oldfield and Tony Dobbs who scored a double by beating previous regular champions South Africa and then finishing first and fourth respectively in the Individual championship. Mr Oldfield stunned the South Africans by shearing the six sheep in 12 minutes 29 seconds, beating the defending champion Mayenseke Shweni by 2 minutes and 19 seconds. The teams woolhandling final saw Sheree Alabaster, of Taihape, and Pagan Karauria, of Alexandra, maintain New Zealand’s stranglehold on the title, from the victory by Joel Henare and Maryanne Baty in Invercargill two years ago. Hawke’s Bay shearers Rowland Smith and Cam Ferguson were third in the teams event and were second and third in the individual event. New Zealand team manager Ken Payne, of Balclutha, said those who work in the woolsheds in New Zealand are used to tough conditions, but the conditions of the competition in France tested them further. “Although New Zealand had won four titles in Invercargill two years ago, there were no foregone conclusions about this trip. We always knew the different sheep breeds, and types of wool would be a challenge, then there was the heatwave across Europe — about which, we heard

p Blades team winners Tony Dobbs (left) and individual champion Allan Oldfield

plenty while we were in Scotland for the Lochearnhead Shears beforehand.” “In many ways, this was the ultimate test, which is what a world championship is supposed to be about,” he said. “Once the team switched onto competition mode, and the adrenalin took over, New Zealand became a formidable opponent across all events, and the performances seemed to get better as things went along.” Mr Oldfield was taught by father Phil Oldfield, who was third in the 2017 championships and by Mr Dobbs in a shearing school in 2010. Since 2016 he has won a unique grand slam of four major UK show titles. ¢ 2

Baking for guide dogs

Craig Watson not standing

Bakers at schools, clubs and the general public are preparing to host Bikkie Day parties to help fundraise for the life-changing service of the Blind Foundation Guide Dogs across the country on Friday, July 26.

u by Mike Isle

Bikkie Day is the chance to bake and buy some delicious biscuits while supporting the life-changing guide dog service, which is entirely funded by charitable donations. “Our guide dogs have big roles, and the positive impact they have on the people they support who are blind or have low vision is priceless. We couldn’t do it without the generous support of the public,” says Blind Foundation Guide Dogs operations manager Wendy Mellberg Haecker. “Last year more than 1,135 bakers from all over New Zealand raised more than $100,000. We hope you join us in supporting Bikkie Day and raising the dough for guide dogs.” It takes nearly two years and a significant investment to raise and train a guide dog and is only possible thanks to the kind and generous support of the public and dedicated volunteer puppy raisers who teach them the ways of the busy world we live in, and training and support from specialist trainers. Sixteen-year-old Tristan-Perry has low vision himself and raised $1,169 for Bikkie Day 2018. “Be courageous and believe that your little gift of fundraising will help

someone who needs it more than you know,” says Tristan-Perry. “I used social media and email to call on friends and family to help fundraise online and baked bikkies for all my generous donors. I had no idea my fundraiser would take off so quickly.” To join the Bikkie Day community and get support from the team and other bikkie bakers, and share your favourite recipes, decorating tips, and fundraising ideas register at bikkieday.org.nz. ¢

Selwyn District Councillor Craig Watson has announced that he will not seek re-election in this year’s local government elections. He has chosen instead to put his name forward for selection for the National Party candidacy in Selwyn. “Amy Adams’ announcement to stand down as the local National Party MP forced me to have a few days of reflection to decide where I could best serve the people of Selwyn most effectively,” Watson said. “My family and I love this district, it’s our home, and it has been a privilege working for the Selwyn council where I have been involved in a variety of fantastic projects, but I have never made a secret of my dream to one day represent our community in parliament.” In making this announcement, Watson wanted to make an early decision about standing for council to avoid triggering a potential council by-election. “I know there are no guarantees when standing for the National Party candidacy, but I decided it would have been unethical going through the council elections, knowing that I could be involved in another election in a year’s time.

Selwyn’s gymnastics success ‘Speed dating’ leads to jobs u by Ann van Engelen

u by Mike Isle

The Affinity Gymnastics Academy was established in October 2018 as a community project to provide adequate facilities to all children in the Selwyn district.

It was all about connections as 40 school leavers tried to woo potential employers at a speed dating style event in West Melton.

“We cater for preschool age through to competitive gymnasts and are now the second largest dedicated gymnastics facility in the South Island,” says general manager Tracy Jones. “We were fortunate to be able to purchase equipment from the 48th Artistic World Championships in Doha, Qatar and now have a 15m x 15m fully sprung gymnastics floor, which is a huge benefit for the gymnasts’ training, “Our highlight of the year was holding an inaugural competition, the Affinity Junior Challenge, which was also a Gymnastics New Zealand affiliated event. Local gymnasts competed as well as gymnasts from Christchurch, Nelson and Timaru clubs. “Our gymnasts achieved well in the competition. Alana Phare won the gold medal in the Step 1, and Meg Allingham achieved fourth place in her first-ever competition in Step 2. Xander Delahunty won the gold medal in the Bronze level boys competition. “We have received fantastic support from local families, and in the nine months, since we opened our doors, we have more than 360 members. We also offer school holiday programmes, host birthday parties and provide an indoor training facility for local sporting teams

and community groups.” The club has received full charitable status from Charities Services and is fully affiliated under Gymnastics New Zealand. “Our coaches, gymnasts and parents not only share a passion for gymnastics but also a desire to make the sport as accessible to anyone within the community who wishes to participate.” For more details or information contact Tracy Jones 022 334 6489 or visit affinitygymnastics.co.nz. ¢

The Selwyn District Council event was organised to help year 12 and 13 school leavers meet employers and hopefully get a job. The students had five minutes to meet with each business, with each side marking if they were interested afterwards and council staff matching up where both student and business were keen to talk more. The event was run with advice from the Ministry of Education and Otago District Council, which have successfully run similar events and the aim was to support young people and keep them in the district, council’s community and economic development senior adviser Clare Quirke said.

“We know with young people leaving school if they don’t get into employment or training that can be a time when problems begin. “Meeting potential employers is a stressful thing, especially if you’re doing it for the first time, so the speed dating idea gives it a bit of fun in a neutral setting.” Darfield High School careers adviser Jo Ager, said the five students she brought had appreciated the chance and had their eyes opened to jobs they didn’t know about before. “These guys were super nervous, but the employers have been impressed with the students that sat in front of them.” ¢

Thank you for helping your community

Fall Zones

Notice and Growth limit zones

To all of you who have had your trees trimmed before they became a problem, thank you for keeping all the farms working and families in your community warm, happy and healthy. You can be proud of the fact that you kept the local cowsheds milking, water pumps pumping and sheep shearers shearing. You may not think that what you’ve done has had much impact on your neighbours, but from all of us here at Orion, we just want to say thank you. We’re not exaggerating.

Where do I start?

On our network, 10-20% of all unplanned power outages are caused by trees — including vegetation — coming into contact with power lines. Other than this, fire damage to property from branches sparking in dry conditions and serious injury from electrocution from contact with trees touching power lines are also possible consequences of not maintaining your trees.

Before you begin, remember to keep yourself, and those around you, safe. We recognise that not everyone is experienced in tree trimming and are happy to advise you on what to do. We can arrange for trees near power lines to be trimmed at your expense, however we recommend you hire professionals to safely carry out the work.

How close is too close? While most damage is caused by trees falling on power lines, significant risk exists from trees merely touching them. This risk increases the higher the voltage of the power line. The minimum distances that must be maintained between trees and power lines, as defined in the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, are outlined in the diagrams above. All vegetation should be kept out of the growth limit zone and preferably the notice zone. Sometimes it may not be practical to have a tree trimmed at the rate at which it grows and unfortunately, this means it may need to be removed. Other situations may require trees to be removed, most commonly when they are at a high risk of falling due to disease or adverse weather events.

If you or someone working for you intends to work within four metres of power lines, a close approach consent is required from Orion before you start. As a tree owner, you may be liable for any damage caused by carrying out trimming or felling of trees.

Will I be fined if I don’t comply? If a cut or trim notice is given to you and you fail to have the tree trimmed and/or advise us of the time and location of the trim without a reasonable excuse, this is an offence. This will make you liable for a fine not exceeding $10,000. If the offence continues, you will be liable for a further fine of not more than $500 for every day or part day during which the offence continues.

ENGAGING YOUNG MINDS Bridging the language gap u by Andy Bryenton

With education changing towards a model of engagement and interactive study, you might think that the days of learning Latin or French in the classroom are numbered. However, surprising research results have proven that learning more than one language is a path to more than just less confusing holidays and that the very young outdo even highly intelligent adults when it comes to learning how to speak other tongues. Language, it’s now thought by many psychologists, sits at the root of not just some knowledge, but all of it. Delving back in time there are even scientists who theorise that our huge brains may have evolved to allow for communication, and that thought and reason are tied closely to language. That’s strong stuff, but the smaller benefits of learning another language while young are just as compelling. We know that small children are great at learning another language, as the physical part of this process involves new connections forming in their brains. What’s new is the knowledge that this process speeds up the formation of connections about other things. People

who speak more than one language have improved memory, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, enhanced concentration, ability to multitask and better listening skills. There’s even evidence that learning another language early on boosts creativity and the ability to multitask, crossing the left and right brain divide. Strangely, learning to read and play music also counts as ‘another language’. Then there’s the different perspective another language offers. There are some thoughts and emotions that are difficult to frame in English but are summed up by a single word in other languages, such as the Scandinavian word ‘hygge’ meaning ‘the sense of warmth and togetherness of being in out of the cold with your friends or family’. Being able to speak and think in other languages offers a fresh perspective, which is good for encouraging analytical thought and lateral thinking. There are many languages to choose from,

with some pragmatically selected for future business success and others for cultural reasons. Whatever the case, however, it’s now increasingly

mainstream knowledge that becoming a lingual prodigy early, sets the brain up for lifelong learning, and can even prevent old-age dementia. ¢

Groundbreaking pain relief A trial of a unique pain relief treatment for calves undergoing disbudding procedures has the potential to improve the welfare of millions of New Zealand calves. Disbudding is a common, but potentially painful procedure carried out by farmers, vets and technicians. Up to two million calves are disbudded in New Zealand every year, and it commonly involves the use of a hot iron to cauterise and remove horn-producing cells before they fuse and grow into horns. The groundbreaking treatment, known as Tri-Solfen, was initially developed in Australia for use in sheep and is being distributed in New Zealand by Bayer. The local anaesthetic and antiseptic topical liquid provides quick pain relief when applied to a wound, and controls and reduces the likelihood of infections and haemorrhaging. Bayer senior technical services veterinarian Dr Kirstie Inglis says the product will make a big difference. “Tri-Solfen is really quite groundbreaking for New Zealand. It is the first time we have had a topical local

anaesthetic to use on disbudded calves, available in the market. “It contains two types of anaesthetic, a shorter acting one and a longer acting one — combined with adrenaline and an antiseptic. Used straight after disbudding Tri-Solfen will make a huge difference to calves at that time of year when they are young and vulnerable, and in need of the best start in life.” Independent lead researcher Dr Emma Cuttance, from VetEnt Research says in some study groups, there was a 90 per cent reduction in marked pain response when compared to the control group, which is extraordinary. “I think that is such an exciting breakthrough for animal health and something I am proud to be involved with.” In October, legislation will come into force, which, at a minimum, requires a local anaesthetic nerve block to

be applied prior to the disbudding procedure. Independent vets involved in the Tri-Solfen trial concluded that using just a pre-procedural local anaesthetic nerve block alone just wasn’t enough. Tri-Solfen applied to calves immediately after disbudding had a positive effect on their behavioural responses and pain sensitivity for at

least 22 hours. Another important welfare outcome of the trial showed there were positive effects for calves that were disbudded under sedation compared with calves disbudded without sedation. Tri-Solfen can also be used for pain relief on lambs following docking and on calves following castration. ¢

Winner makes history u by Ann van Engelen

James Robertson, a business graduate, has made history being the youngest competitor to be named the 51st FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition. “When my name was called out, I went into shock. I just can’t believe it — it’s a dream come true. It has always been a goal of mine to win this title,” said James. The 22-year-old Auckland-based business graduate grew up on a 200 cow dairy farm in Waikato and works for Fonterra in its trade strategy team. His involvement with NZ Young Farmers started during high school. “The opportunities in the agri-food sector are endless, even if you live in the city. You just have to be passionate,” he said. “The work NZ Young Farmers does in schools to show students the diverse range of careers in agriculture is extremely important. I probably wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for my involvement with NZ Young Farmers early on.” The victory was the culmination of days of gruelling practical and technical

challenges, which tested their skills, knowledge and stamina. Competitors had to drive a large grape harvester, make sausages, assess health and safety risks using a virtual reality simulator, install an irrigation system for fruit trees, market a line of sheep and sit an agri-business exam. James won a prize package worth at least $75,000, including a trip to Ireland and he took out the FMG People’s Choice Award. Central Hawke’s Bay technical field representative Joseph Watts gained second place, and Waikato vet Emma Dangen came third and picked up the award for championing environmental best practice. Canterbury competitor Georgie Lindsay was unplaced in the competition. The contest is supported by FMG, Ravensdown, Honda, WorkSafe, Zero Harm Farm, STIHL, Lincoln University, Massey University, Southfuels, Northfuels, Betacraft and New Holland. ¢

ndrew’s responsibilities include bird and wildlife monitoring across the city and after decades of experience can spot a flock of hundreds of birds and within seconds identify their species and accurately estimate their numbers. Andrew was praised for his meticulous field observations and the way he has used his data and research to benefit birds. He says he is most proud of how he and other council staff have helped improve outcomes for local birds by

protecting and enhancing existing habitats and establishing new ones. “I have been counting birds for over 30 years. I have about 20,000 pages of field notes and have taken part in tens of thousands of counts of different birds around Banks Peninsula, Heathcote and Avon Rivers, Lake Ellesmere and coastal areas,” he says. “I have got a really powerful database of information and have been able to use that to identify the sites that are really important to local wildlife so they can be managed appropriately. last 20 years, we have been recreating a lot of what was lost. Counting birds show how important city habitats are, for example, the biggest population of pukeko is at Travis Wetland in Burwood and the largest population of godwits is around the Avon-Heathcote estuary. That kind of data breaks the assumption that it doesn’t really matter what we do around town because these birds live elsewhere.” Mr Crossland says New Zealand’s bird life is incredibly diverse. In Christchurch, 242 different species have been recorded and on an average day, he might see 70 different types of bird. Water and wetland birds are his particular passion because they are often rare, endemic, or they migrate from elsewhere. “They show how our local island is connected to a larger global ecosystem. Native bird populations in Christchurch are growing and it is incredibly positive. After the earthquakes, we had some setbacks such as avian botulism, but now there is a recovery taking place with increased habitat and better predator control. Within the area that the council

manages things are really improving.” Council Regional Parks manager Kay Holder says Andrew’s knowledge and experience have been invaluable to the council since he joined the parks team in 2002. “He has made a huge
