As well as developing her leadership skills and learning how to organise volunteer programmes, Lincoln University student Kristy Havill has been soaking up the atmosphere in at the recent World Cup football tournament in Russia. Last year the third-year sport and recreation management student, who is also a New Zealand representative clay target shooter, was selected to be New Zealand’s sole representative at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Volunteer Leader’s Academy in Kazan, which was held last month. The academy provides professional training for young leaders in the volunteer movement, targeting students around the world who promote sport and event volunteering in their university and region. Following her attendance at the academy, where she was named as one of 12 students who outperformed their peers, Havill was selected to join FISU staff at the Universiades next year. The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organised by FISU, including the Winter Universiade in Russia in March next year and the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy in July. Havill said in her blog on the University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand website that the academy education programme had been extensive and challenging, with a range of speakers from FISU, Education First and the Serbian Olympic Committee. “It has been an intriguing experience to learn about how national university sport federations operate in other countries,” she said. “There have been some very heated discussions as a by-product of the learnings and opinions that were shared during the presentations.”
p Lincoln University student Kirsty Havill, seen here representing New Zealand at the world clay target shooting championships in Australia in March, has been soaking up the atmosphere at the football World Cup in Russia
She said she hoped to bring some initiatives home that could nullify some of the issues that are present in other countries. Her trip also included a trip to Kazan Arena to watch Australia play France in the first Group C fixture of the FIFA World Cup. Havill is also a team leader and coach for the Forward Foundation, which aims to increase participation in girls’ sport, and president of the Lincoln University Recreation Society. Havill was recently part of the New Zealand women’s team, which took out the silver medal at the world clay target shooting championships in Australia. ¢

Council apologises for water cut u by Mike Isle
The cut to water supplies that affected some homes in the Faringdon area of Rolleston on Monday and again on Tuesday has been resolved, says the Selwyn District Council. However, some residents still feel frustrated at the council’s handling of the issue, pointing to a lack of consultation and warning. The council’s asset manager, Murray Washington, said the water outages were part of a scheduled shutdown to allow for planned water upgrades. Residents in the planned affected area—Goulds Road, Oak Tree Land and Kakapo Place — had been notified by letter box drops on Thursday, July 12 he said. “Unfortunately, the shutdown affected a larger area than was anticipated.

“We estimate around 1,000 households could have been without water for a period. “While the water was restored, the council provided a tanker with potable water and residents were also able to fill water containers at the Rolleston Community Centre, the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and at the Selwyn District Council on Norman Kirk Drive.” Mr Washington said the council thanked affected residents for their patience while contractors worked to restore the service, and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Mission to warm homes u by Kent Caddick
The Firewood Mission is working with the Selwyn District Council to supply firewood to those in need around the district, and the wider Canterbury region.
p Firewood will be heading to a number of homes in Selwyn thanks to the efforts of the Firewood Mission and the district council
Council leases, at a ‘peppercorn’ rental, part of a gravel pit at Broadfield near Prebbleton to the Firewood Mission, which uses the space to split and cut the wood to prepare it for delivery for those in need. The Firewood Mission, which was set up 17 years ago by Al Fone, delivers firewood to those who can’t afford it, to help keep their households warm over winter. Last year, the mission delivered 333 cubic metres of wood to 111 households, with each household receiving three cubic metres. Al Fone said his team of around 30 volunteers had worked tirelessly felling, splitting, sorting and delivering wood.
“We are grateful for the help we receive from the likes of the Selwyn District Council and without it the work we do wouldn’t be possible.” Mr Fone said they often encounter heart-breaking stories and was recently told of one woman who was heating her house with the oven, as prior to delivery of the wood it was the only source of heating in her home. Council’s acquisitions disposals and leasing manager, Rob Allen, said it was fantastic for the council to be able to give back to a charitable organisation working to help those in need. He said a resource consent allows the charity to use part of the pit to prepare the wood. ¢

Ellesmere relinquish Southbridge Shield u by Kent Caddick
Ellesmere has lost its grip on the Southbridge Shield after the North Canterbury rep side crossed the Waimakiriri River to wrest the prestigious rugby trophy from its grasp on Saturday afternoon. Since 2006 Ellesmere has had a stranglehold on the shield but following wins in 2013 and 2016 North Canterbury ventured south to Prebbleton Domain with some confidence, and at the end of the 80 minutes the visitors emerged the victors, 36–29. The platform for the North Canterbury victory was laid when its first five Brooke Retallick grabbed two intercept tries, one in each half of the match. The visitors had opened the scoring with an unconverted try in the first five minutes and a penalty a few minutes later. Midway through the first spell, Ellesmere finally got on the board when Darfield fullback Alex Parker dotted down. The try was converted by halfback Harry Kirk, who was one of the standout performers for the shield holders. Then came the first of Retallick’s intercept tries, followed minutes later by another North Canterbury try, which was converted by Retallick, and had the visitors leading 22–7 on the cusp of half-time. With the first 40 minutes up Waihora

lock, Joe Robins completed a move set in motion by a Kirk break to close the gap to 14–22. Ellesmere struck early in the second half when Prebbleton’s Eddie Sunia burst over for a try to reduce the deficit to just three points. However, Retallick then ran in for his second intercept try, which he converted, to restore the North Canterbury’s lead. Springston’s Shaun Harrington dotted down out wide following a break by Ellesmere captain Tim Murgatroyd to close the gap once again. North Canterbury’s response was almost immediate with winger Junior Kaukirewa using his speed to outpace the Ellesmere cover defence to score out wide, and with Retallick converting from the sideline the visitors had a strong grip on the shield with 15 minutes to go in the match. Ellesmere threw everything at North Canterbury in the closing minutes and was rewarded with an unconverted try to Parker, but the visitors held strong to get their hands on the shield for only the third time since 2006. ¢

Golden Years
A forever vacation u by Jill Dickie
Congratulations on your retirement! Now that you’ve made the decision to leave work forever, you will have less time on your hands than you thought you would, or so it seems. For many, leaving the structure of a work routine means more time for relaxation, reading, gardening, catching up with family and generally enjoying life, but what often happens is the household chores are done at a much more leisurely pace, you stop for a cuppa more frequently, and suddenly the days are passing with little achieved! It is important then to go into retirement with an action plan, deciding
which interests or hobbies to maintain, and which new activities to start and how to ensure a sense of fulfilment from each day. Maintaining good health and an exercise program is imperative, and this can incorporate walking or hiking, swimming, cycling or even joining a gym class. All options are a great way to maintain physical activity, and meets the needs of connecting with others
REVITALIZE YOUR HEARING
sharing the same experiences. If you feel like you’ve neglected relationships with family, friends or neighbours while you’ve been working, now is the time to re-establish the close bonds you used to have or didn’t have, with some lunches out, trips to the movies or a family barbecue. The more you keep your brain active, the better it will work for you, so maybe this is the time to take up Sudoku, or read all those books you bought but didn’t get around to reading. You could even learn a new language or new style of cooking, or finish up some of that
tinkering that you started in the garage years ago! Using your brain to solve problems, or learn something new, is the best stimulation for it. Alternatively, if you’ve had an extremely busy and stressful working life, this may be time to relax your brain, practise yoga or meditation, take time out with nature or a walk along the beach. Do what makes you feel happy and at ease. At the end of each day, take a mental note of all you’ve achieved, and spend a moment basking in your sense of satisfaction, you’ve earned it! ¢
Do you or your loved ones have difficulty with your hearing? Hearing loss is an invisible condition which sneaks up on you very gradually. Overcoming hearing loss has never been easier with new, almost invisible, digital hearing devices. Our friendly, professional team are here to help!

Despite the inevitable aches and pains that come with it, ageing is a privilege denied to many, and with a little planning, you and your loved ones can make the most of your time together without the added stress. Ensuring you have a solid plan regarding aged care and funeral arrangements can make what is a difficult time emotionally, a little easier. When someone moves into residential care in a rest home or hospital, they sign a contract and get information about their rights and responsibilities. There are two main documents that need to be signed: an admission agreement and a plan for care. It is advisable to get legal or independent advice about the admission agreement, and the rest home may ask you to set up an Enduring Power of Attorney before move-in day. Sometimes the move might happen suddenly, and there is no time to sign in the admission agreement. In this case, either the person moving or the

power of attorney should sign it as soon as possible. In the case of an urgent move, it may be necessary to move into any rest home that has a room available. You can always transfer to the preferred home when a room becomes available. The person’s doctor and family should be notified of the move, and the admission agreement will state
how much notice is required to be given. The government’s residential care subsidy only pays for a standard room, so this may mean moving into another rest home until an affordable room becomes available in the preferred rest home. Guidelines around this subsidy can be found on the New Zealand Government website govt.nz and search for rest homes and residential care. ¢

If we are still concerned some of the toxin has been absorbed, then a blood test is done, and an expensive treatment course started. Remember, prevention is your best option.
Lifestyle Members Meeting Preparing for spring Monday 30th July at 6.00pm, VetEnt Darfield We will discuss: • Calving and lambing • Complications
Stephen Thom Glazing 2012 Ltd
THE CAT DOOR MAN
It’s the time of year for putting rat bait out. At Vetent Darfield, we have recently had a number of dogs brought in with either suspected exposure to rat bait or illness as a result of ingestion. The distinctive blue or green bait seems to be highly attractive to dogs, and most will eat it if they get access to it. They may also ingest the poison as a result of eating poisoned mice and rats. The signs of toxicity take days to weeks to show themselves. The poison causes abnormal clotting with dogs getting brought in to the clinic with either weakness, lethargy or sometimes bruising or bleeding. Darfield Vetent, for example, has had two different dogs come in with unexplained bleeding in the mouth. However, they can also bleed into any organ or space internally, which presents initially with weakness but can rapidly progress to death. If severe internal bleeding does occur, then there are limited options for treatment at this later point. Prevention is the best method of avoiding rat bait toxicity. Ideally, access to rat bait should be strictly controlled. It includes putting it high up out of reach, placing it securely within a container that allows only rats and mice to enter, and attaching it firmly so it cannot be knocked onto the ground. Regular checks to safely dispose of any dead mice and rats found is also recommended. What if you suspect your dog has just eaten some bait? Call the clinic straight away. We will safely make the dog vomit to remove the bait from the stomach before it has the chance to be absorbed. It needs to happen as soon as possible after eating the bait, within one hour if possible.

Nomad at heart u by Andy Bryenton
Since 2003 Volkswagen’s big, capable and very comfortable Touareg sports utility has been the hallmark to beat when it comes to going places off the beaten track in style. Immediately achieving a position only previously occupied by the most refined of Range Rovers, the surefooted machine named after the hardy Berber subtribe of the Sahara became a favourite of those who placed engineering, ride and technology over empty badge prestige. The all-new 2018 Touareg is new not just in name, but new from the ground up. A ‘back to the drawing board’ approach, which has given the big Volkswagen clear-cut, handsomely aggressive lines and some of the biggest, most knockout alloy wheels on a factory sports utility. Tellingly, this slightly bigger, definitely bolder Touareg shares a platform with the upmarket Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga, but eschews big noting in favour of packing in more of what drivers want beyond the badge. It is, after all, an iteration of the ‘people’s car’ — and Volkswagen knows exactly how to give the people what they want. The cabin is nothing short of futuristic, with a crisp head-up display acting as the curtain raiser to a massive sweep of digital readouts — both electronic dials and a 15 inch infotainment screen,

which uses tiles in the fashion of a Microsoft tablet. Configure it how you like, and everything is there at a fingertip’s command. If you want to be wrapped in a quiet, leather-swathed, nicely accented cocoon of serenity as you cruise, there’s now no need to buy a Mercedes S-Class. The Touareg will also get you places a big luxury sedan could never dream of. Power comes from a smooth and whisper-quiet diesel six, designed to move all this luxury along with frugal
and unobtrusive grace. Nevertheless, for those who still live with the misconception that an SUV must still be a lumbering creature, it despatches 0–100 kph in just over six seconds. Not long ago, that was v8 coupe fast. Best of all, the Touareg is nimble when it comes to low speeds and tight spaces, boasting a turning circle reminiscent of that other notable VW — the Golf GTi. Storage in the rear for the gear is also more than ample, meaning that the Touareg is as practical as it is comfortable. ¢
