Around 100 people gathered at the Hororata Hall recently for a very special Ceilidh, a social event with Scottish music and singing, traditional dancing, and storytelling. The Hororata event was put on with the support of the Hororata Community Trust. Leading the way was former Hororata local, and internationally renowned Ceilidh caller, Colin Forsyth, who was visiting from Scotland. “Our aim for this Ceilidh was to create a very special atmosphere where young, old, neighbour, stranger and everyone in between could join together for some good old fashioned fun,” said one of the organisers, Tish Ballagh. “The very nature of a Ceilidh means you meet everyone as you change partners during dances, and everyone spent time on the dance floor thanks to Colin’s encouragement. “The Hororata Community Trust aims to bring people together and this Ceilidh certainly did that. Everyone left with sore feet and a smile.” The evening included entertainment from dancers from the Julie Hawk School of Dance and the pipers and drummers

 Hororata’s Toby Driscoll, left, takes Olivia Edkins from Ashburton for a spin on the dance floor during the Hororata Ceilidh

from the St Andrews’ College Pipe Band. There was also a haggis ceremony, which included Mr Forsyth’s rendition of Robert Burns ‘Ode to the Haggis’. A traditional Scottish meal followed with haggis, neeps and tatties, oatcakes, oatie biscuits and salmon. 

This year’s musical, ‘The Full Monty’, is based on the movie of the same name and is set in a town where the men have been made redundant from the local steel works. When their wives and girlfriends pay to see a male strip show, the men figure they could try their hands at it and make a mountain of cash in just one night. For the third year in a row the Kirwee Players’ creative team is Phil Dean (director), Darren Weber (musical director), Anna Randall (choreographer) and Caelan Thomas (pianist). “Once again they have enjoyed working together, had many laughs

and enjoyed working with a bunch of new talent from the growing district of Selwyn,” publicist Courtney Hyde said. “The Full Monty is sure to have people in stitches, so after three years of sell out shows, don’t miss out on tickets for this one, it’s going to be a showstopper.” The show opens at the Kirwee Community Hall on Friday, July and 28 and runs through until Saturday, August 5, although there will be no performances on July 31 (Monday) and August 1 (Tuesday). Izone plant on track

The 2017 New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year Nigel Woodhead is paying tribute to Lincoln University for his success in the iconic competition.

 Pure Nutrition Limited’s canning plant being built in Rolleston’s Izone industrial area will employ around 30 people and produce in the vicinity of 20 million cans of milk formula a year.

 Lincoln University graduate Nigel Woodhead celebrates his win the 2017 New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition

Mr Woodhead, who claimed the title in the Manawatu earlier this month, said his time at Lincoln University opened doors for him which contributed to his success. He was awarded a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree in 2009 by Lincoln University and the 28-year-old Milton sheep and beef farmer said his study has had a huge influence on his career since. “I chose Lincoln because it has a great reputation and graduates I had spoken to told me of the huge amount of fun that was had while studying. “I had a great time at Lincoln and met so many amazing people. It was a great experience and definitely set me up well for my career. “Banks and fertiliser companies, and other businesses were screaming out for agriculture graduates, so I knew I wouldn’t have any issues finding a good job at the end of my studies.” Mr Woodhead said his degree opened the door for him to work for Midlands Seed in Ashburton, firstly as a research assistant and then as a field consultant. “It came about as one of my lecturers in a plant science class mentioned there was a good job going at Midlands working for one of his former pupils, so I applied and got the job. “It gave me a great background understanding of all things agriculture and has allowed me to be in a great

position to learn and understand new ideas.” He singled out the field trips he did while studying at Lincoln as particularly rewarding. “It was great to get out of the classroom and talk to actual farmers about actual farms and what goes on. “There is so much to be learnt from the farmers that the trips were always a highlight and a great learning experience. “The quality of lecturers was great too. I was lucky to have been taught by the likes of Dr Warwick Scott and Roger McLenaghen — those sort of guys are so knowledgeable and related so well to the students, it was great.” 

Interim manager of Pure Nutrition, Mark Lockington, said the building of the Pure Nutrition canning and blending plant in Rolleston has progressed rapidly. “We fully expect the construction project to be completed on time for getting our first test of canned Infant Toddler Nutrition product off the production line in October,” Mr Lockington said. “The site, which was no more than a poured-concrete foundation slab in December 2016, is now an enclosed facility. “The warehouse floor has just been completed and the upper level, the site of the blending powder plant is also taking shape. “The office walls are in place and the carpark is ready to seal, and the

next step is to create the ring road around the site.” Mr Lockington said blending equipment has arrived from Singapore and Europe and canning equipment is being tested overseas before being shipped to site. “Preparation for running the plant is well underway, with energised Chinese and New Zealand teams working well together. “Recruitment for production and quality staff will start in August 2017.” Pure Nutrition has already appointed Phil Wilson to the position of sales and marketing Manager. The Pure Nutrition joint venture will can two different sizes of Infant and Toddler Nutritionals for Chinese consumers, plus a smaller sample size to be exhibited at trade fairs and customer meetings. 

The gallery in Leeston’s main street was opened two months ago with a tuition area alongside the gallery space.

The gallery held two Children’s School Holiday Art and Craft sessions over the holidays, which were organised by Jill Lemon and Averil Southward. Following lessons learnt from these events, the Government is reforming the EQC scheme to make the process simpler and more effective for future natural disasters. The reforms will: • Increase the monetary cap from $100,000 (plus GST) to $150,000 (plus GST) for EQC building cover. • Clarify how land damage is covered by EQC, and how land and building damage interact. Damage that directly affects the property and/or access to it will be covered by EQC. • Standardise the claims excess on EQC building cover at $1,000. This means all homeowners will pay the same excess, whereas currently this ranges from $200 to $1,150 depending on the size of the claim. • EQC will no longer provide any residential household contents insurance. Homeowners will have their contents insurance covered by their private insurer. • Require claimants to lodge claims with their private insurer in the first instance, and the insurer would then pass the claim on to EQC (if the property is insured).

EQC and private insurers have already been working much more closely together in the aftermath of the Kaikoura earthquake, the February 14, 2016 aftershock and the flooding in Edgecumbe. The reforms will help EQC and private insurers work together better in future to provide faster and smoother resolution of claims. Everyone with a private insurance policy that includes fire insurance for their residential building will continue to receive EQC cover and existing EQC claims will not be affected by the reforms. EQC has a Government guarantee and $4.7 billion in reinsurance cover, so homeowners will be covered if there is another natural disaster. However we do need to start the process of replenishing the Natural Disaster Fund (NDF) which has been depleted by the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes. For this reason, EQC levies will increase to 20 cents per $100 from November 1 to help rebuild the NDF and ensure EQC is available to contribute to future natural disasters. 

Southbridge Shield comes home

5

 by Kent Caddick

Ellesmere has recaptured the symbol of Canterbury country rugby, the Southbridge Shield, with a win over holders North Canterbury in Kaiapoi on Saturday. After losing the shield last year in Darfield, Ellesmere came to Kaiapoi determined to wrest the shield back. The first half was an even affair, with North Canterbury dominating the first 30 minutes, running in two tries to take a 17-6 lead with Ellesmere’s only points coming from the boot of Shannon Donald. However, in the 10 minutes before halftime Ellesmere struck twice, with Jale Masi charging over for a try before co-captain Tim Murgatroyd charged down a clearing kick to score, and give Ellesmere a 18-17 lead at the break. North Canterbury came out firing after halftime and laid siege to the Ellesmere line. However, Ellesmere was up to the task defensively, and after 15 minutes of the second spell all North Canterbury had to show for its efforts was a penalty to Brook Retallick, and a 20-18 lead. Ellesmere then turned

 Darfield’s Keiran Meikle scores for Ellesmere

defence into attack as it ran at North Canterbury with winger Kieran Meikle plunging over out wide for a try which was converted from the sideline by Donald for a 28-20 lead. Despite losing a man to the sin bin Ellesmere kept its foot down and with five minutes to go fullback Mark Maitland sealed the match for Ellesmere, scoring after a sweeping move. Donald converted to make the final score 35-20 to secure the Southbridge Shield once again for Ellesmere. Full results: Southbridge Shield: North Canterbury 20 v Ellesmere 35; Munro Shield (Colts): North Canterbury 10 v Ellesmere 28; McGiffert Trophy (U18): North Canterbury 41 v Ellesmere 7; Tiny Hill Shield (U16) North Canterbury 30 v Ellesmere 15; Under 65kg: North Canterbury 12 v Ellesmere 60; Under 48kg North Canterbury 31 v Ellesmere 15. 

Avoid leaving ‘starter kits’ for young criminals. These are items like chainsaws and mowers that can be easily taken and quickly sold. Thieves often survey properties from afar before approaching, so be aware of strange vehicles parked within sight of your place. They also like to drive in to see what security systems you have and the state of doors and windows. Criminals don’t like walking as they may be more easily seen. So a locked gate (with a good quality lock) is the first defence, despite it being inconvenient for you. Ensure the gate cannot be lifted off its hinges by reversing the top gudgeon. Record the vehicle numbers of anyone coming to your property with weak excuses such as looking for a named person, or a lost dog. So many people are burgled when they are home, eg when mowing lawns, so lock your door when in the garden or out on the property. Have an alarm on the house and sheds. Even if you are a long way from town, the criminals will not know how long they have to operate before help arrives but remember they may do a test run first and come back later. Keep receipts for everything of value purchased as most insurance companies require this for claims. Mark or engrave all items with your name or phone number and make it obvious wherever possible. Try to limit how much fuel you keep on your property as thieves can always find some way to cut pipes even if the fillers are locked. Always tell the police if you have been burgled even if not much is taken as even if they cannot do much, it all adds to their information database. Pets & Livestock ADVERTORIAL

Tiny furry pets by Yolande Howell BVSc (Hons)

We often talk about cats and dogs when it comes to pets, however rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, chinchillas are other pets we often see. They all have different features and have very different physiology, husbandry and dietary requirements. Fresh water should always be provided for all species. Like cats and dogs tiny pets need a lot of care and attention. Most of them are sociable animals and not a pet to be left in a hutch all the time. Too often vets see tiny pets given to children as their first pet. As the novelty wears off they are left outside in their hutch and parents end up caring for them. I urge people to think carefully whether your daily schedule can include feeding, cleaning, checking, interacting with and exercising a tiny pet before getting one. Rabbits are very popular and they come in all different sizes and breeds. Their housing needs to be kept clean, avoid direct sunlight, rain and drafts and provide soft bedding such as meadow hay. They are herbivores and need a diet of hay, fresh grass, weeds such as dandelions, vegetables and a small amount of good quality rabbit pellets. Avoid giving rabbits lettuce or too much cucumber as they can upset their digestive system. Rabbits also require annual immunisations to protect them from Calicivirus in New Zealand — ask your vet about it. Rabbits can also be trained to use the litter tray and make a fun pet

indoors also. Guinea pigs make fun little pets. They are very sociable animals and often thrive with another guinea pig friend. Their housing requirements are similar to rabbits as they can get cold and suffer heat exhaustion easily so protect them from the elements. They also like hiding in holes and boxes so provide them with a variety. They need a diet high in protein, fibre and vitamin C so a good quality pellet or muesli and hay should be provided at all times. Fresh grass and vegetables are also very good but avoid lettuce and potato. Fruit can be given but keep it as a treat only. Rats and mice make good indoor pets. They also thrive with a companion and are sociable active animals. It is best if their chew-proof housing or cage has multiple levels as they need exercise and stimulation. Lots of toys, ladders, boxes and a wheel is also very popular. Rats and mice have high ammonium levels in their urine so an absorbent bedding such as shredded paper or paper cat litter make a good substrate. Rats and mice are omnivores so they can digest plant and animal food. A good quality rat or mice pellet should be provided at all times along with fresh fruit and vegetables. Chinchillas make lovable fun pets but are unsuitable for young children. They can be shy and may bite if they panic. Housing two

chinchillas together is also a good idea as they can get too attached to their owner otherwise. Chinchillas like chewing and providing them with chew-proof toys and a large cage with untreated branches is essential. Safe varieties of tree to use include apple and willow. They also need a dust bath and hidey holes. A balanced diet includes good quality hay, chinchilla-specific pellets, nuts, seeds and treats such as dried fruit (banana, cranberries or apples). Tiny furry pets have teeth that grow continuously, so their diet is very important in

order to keep these teeth worn correctly in addition to keeping them in the best health. They do get sick and injured and are very good at hiding their symptoms. So any symptoms such as being quiet and dull, not eating, discharge from eye(s), dribbling of saliva, diarrhoea, bad odour or lameness indicates urgent veterinary attention is required. Remember to spend time with them — tiny furry pets do not belong just in a cage. They are sociable and loving animals and love and attention goes a long way.

Auto & Marine ADVERTORIAL

Getting that power to the ground “When performance counts”

by Andy Bryenton

No matter how advanced your car, ute or van is, and no matter what engineering wizardry rumbles under the hood, the most critical component in delivering its power to the road transmits all those Newton-metres of torque via four tiny contact patches the width of your thumb. Your tyres work hard in all conditions to keep you safe, providing grip, repelling surface water and even digging in to tackle off-road terrain. With this fact in mind, it’s good to know that the professionals you choose to replace or repair your tyres have the same level of skill — and automotive appreciation — as the ones who tune your engine. That’s certainly the case at JCM Direct, a family business serving the people of Christchurch and beyond from their home base in Middleton. Striking out as an independent, owner Athol and Julie have been proud to offer a wide range of top-brand tyres to their customers for the past six years. In fact, his expertise is inter-generational — his father was also in the business of keeping wheels rolling. Today the defining feature of JCM Direct is the sheer range of tyres on hand and on sale. From affordable entry level brands to those chosen by top racing teams like Pirelli and BF Goodrich, all the way to off-road legends like Maxxis — and far beyond. Athol says that there’s a growing number of customers who come to him for hard-to-find tyres that may never see a turn on the highway — tyres for ride-on mowers, for quad bikes, for wheelbarrows — and the list goes on. He’s even got the connections to source specialist tyres and rims for classic caravans and trailers — as well as the classic cars which tow them. As he says — it’s everything from the Model T right up to the modern car. Repairs and second hand tyres also make up a massive part of JCM’s business. Second-hand tyres are carefully chosen and have only been slightly used, retaining 80 per cent of their original tread depth. There are
