Makeover for Rolleston station  by Kent Caddick

Rolleston’s old railway station could be about to receive a makeover and potentially become an iconic symbol for the Selwyn district township.

After receiving a number of comments about the current state of the station the Selwyn Central Community Board has been investigating how to reinvigorate the station. “There have been a number of discussions on the issue and have included everything from landscaping to painting a mural on the station walls to restoring it and using it as a rail museum with historic photographs of the Rolleston station,” board chair Liz Russell says. “We have been looking to get some mural concepts done but there is a feeling that a mural may be a little tacky and has been done elsewhere.”

Another idea suggested is to see if the board could acquire an old locomotive engine and mount it on the platform as an acknowledgement of the importance the railway has played in the town’s history. Liz Russell says they will be working in with the Rolleston Residents Association in regard to the station’s future but are very keen to hear from members of the local Rolleston community as to what they would like to see. If you have any thoughts on what could be done with the station they can be emailed to Liz Russell at liz.russell@selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

Fire chief hangs up his hat

 by Kent Caddick

After almost 40 years as a fire fighter West Melton Volunteer Rural Fire Force’s chief fire officer, Bob King, has called it a day. His long service to the force was recently recognised with a special farewell evening at the Rolleston Events Centre. “I always said when I turned 65 I was going to pull the pin,” he said. “The key to letting go was having the confidence that those I was leaving behind would be able to do the job and they can. “Over the last five years I have had some great support from the rest of the team and my deputy John Doherty, who will do a good job as the new CFO.” Bob King first signed up for the West Melton force in 1974. He has a plethora of memories but the summer of 1988– 89 is one which sticks out. “I think this was probably the busiest summer I was involved with. It was incredibly dry and we would be involved in fighting up to three fires a day, basically travelling from one fire to the next.” His most treasured memory is that of the team around him. “Rural fire fighting is a brotherhood. You do it because you enjoy it and if you don’t like getting wet, dirty and uncomfortable you don’t do it. These guys at West Melton are so

enthusiastic about what they are doing and equally committed to doing it right. Not long ago we attended a rather big vegetation fire which a number of crews attended and basically the West Melton guys knocked out half the fire with our one truck. “When I came up to them at the end all I could see was rows and rows of grinning, white teeth as their faces were so blackened by fighting the fire. It was their sense of satisfaction at a job well done that was coming through in the smiles.” Back when he first volunteered for the rural force most fire fighters were farmers. “That was understandable because as a fire force we specialise in vegetation fires.” As the vocational composition of a rural fire force changed over the years so did the equipment they used. “When I first started we had an old 1950s Bedford truck and now we have a twoyear-old Isuzu out of the factory and custom built for us.” From early on Bob was keen to be involved in the fire management side

of the force’s work. When Templeton Hospital where he worked closed down he carved himself out a career as a fire trainer and assessor, working with the New Zealand Fire Service, local councils and the Emergency Management Qualifications training authority.

He will continue to work with these organisations despite his retirement from fire fighting and part of his role will be to see that both fire fighters and equipment are trained and maintained so rural fire forces like West Melton will function effectively. ¢

Thank you for submitting your ideas and comments to the Selwyn District Council’s Annual Plan. The council has listened to and deliberated on your views. The main issues being road maintenance, sealing and land drainage. The Government subsidy for road maintenance has been reduced. As a result council is again reviewing its maintenance expectations. Council is concerned that expenditure is insufficient and $1 million of extra general rates is being used for roading in 2013–24. This increase will need to continue to be funded in future years. New sealing of roads will be considered providing a subsidy from the Government or adjoining land owner is available. The Uniform Annual General Charge is the proportion of your general rate charged on a household basis rather than based on capital value. Both John and Sam believe this level should be set at the legislative maximum of 30%, unfortunately the majority of councillors believe that large land holders in Selwyn should continue to subsidise the general rate for those who live in towns.

District Development Strategy Council staff are continuing their work on this important planning document which will help shape our district into the future. A draft will be produced for your feedback over the next month.

Public Toilets New public toilets for Springfield and Darfield are proceeding and have been placed in the hands of a contractor to manage both projects. The delays in these projects are disappointing but the design for Springfield was approved by the township committee in June. Final drawings are being prepared before the building consent is applied for.

Westview Park The sale of the land in Darfield behind the 4 Square and up to the skate park is complete. The total sale price was $1.2 million. Half the sum has been paid with the balance in three years. The sale has enabled the repayment of $170,000 to the reserve development account. There are a few final projects to complete: seating and enhancement at the skate park, an entrance to the park, and path to new toilet currently under design. There will be a public meeting in August to hear your wishes for the remaining funds.

McHugh Plantation The purchase of this unique stand of trees has been completed for $1.6 million.

The council has approved the structure of a guidance group to include forestry and outdoor recreation expertise. Their role will be to prepare a design and 10-year management plan for the park.

Libraries It has been great to see the Darfield library and community meeting rooms being well used. The council is presently marketing the old library building and site. Work to reinstate the Glentunnel Library building will take place over the next couple of years. The cost will be approximately $250,000 to repair this historically significant and well utilised building which stands alongside and integrates well with the upgraded Glentunnel Museum.

Hororata Hall The council and community are still working on a clear way forward with options being to repair the present hall to earthquake standards, rebuild a new facility somewhere or have no hall at all. Results from the recent residents’ survey revealed the many areas of the current facility that locals believe need work. Over 70% of respondents thought the kitchen, stage, toilet, main hall, play centre, and meeting room all need attention, while 56% of respondents wanted a new multipurpose facility built either on the current site or an alternative site.

Thank You Our three-year term as councillors ends in October. We thank you for your support and will both be standing for re-election as councillors, with Sam also standing for the mayoralty. ¢

Planning for sesquicentennial under way

5

 by Kent Caddick

Planning has begun to help the West Melton township and district celebrate its 150th anniversary next year. The celebration date has been set for Labour Weekend, Friday October 24 to Sunday October 26 inclusive, with a variety of events to be staged over the weekend to mark the town’s sesquicentennial. West Melton 150th Working Group chair Ian Sandford says the theme of the weekend will be ‘celebrating the heritage, community and future of West Melton’. He says it is still in the early planning stages but a number of events have already been pencilled in.

Kicking celebrations off on the Friday will be a Black Tie Ball where guests will be encouraged not only to wear black tie but also period costumes. Over the weekend it is planned to have a Grand Parade, a Domain Sports Day, a village dedication with possibly a tree planting or the laying of a foundation stone and the burying of a time capsule. “The idea of the sports Photo: Colin Watson day is that we will have a  The West Melton Hotel which was built in 1881 photographed in 1922. Some of the number of sports on show hotel still remains today as part of the West Melton Tavern with participants dressing in period playing uniforms and playing to the rules of the day,” Mr Sandford says. Mr Sandford says the working group will be holding a number of fundraising events over the next 12 months with a Car Boot Sale set down for Labour Weekend this year at the West Melton Hall. Commemorative tea towels are also being produced and will assist the group with its fundraising. According to the Cyclopedia of New Zealand the first settlers arrived in West Melton in 1864. Among them was Mr H. Tricket who is credited with giving the township and district its name of West Melton. ¢

Market move a hit The new location for the Darfield Farmers Market appears to be a success. The market has been moved to the main road in Darfield under the trees beside the old jail, and the first market to be held in the new location was last Saturday. “With off-street parking and being more visible to the passing traffic, trade was brisk despite the inclement weather,” market organiser Matt Maude says. “Now only a stone’s throw from Darfield’s central shopping area many customers left their cars parked and strolled across to the market.” Regular market-goer Patricia Charles said it was just what the market needed. The market runs every Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

Judges impressed with colourful entries

Getting enough Co Enzyme Q10?

The judges of the Craftibug Colouring Competition, cosponsored by The Record, were impressed with the numbers and quality of this year’s entries. Over 30 entries were received with the entrants competing in three categories: Under 5, 5–8 years and Over 8. Four-year-old Ruby Taylor from Kirwee was judged the winner in the Under 5 section, Isaac Topham (8) who attends Glentunnel School took out the 5-8 years section while 10-year-old Grace Allan of Darfield was judged the best in the Over 8 age group. Judge Kirsty Peel of the Malvern Community Arts Council says she was impressed with the quality of the entries particularly in the 5–8 years’ division and singled out age group winner Isaac Topham for special mention for his innovative use of chalk in his winning entry. The winners were presented with their prizes at a prizegiving held at the Selwyn Art Gallery in Darfield. ¢

Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for energy and a deficiency will can make us abnormally tired with weak muscles. As an antioxidant it also prevents dangerous oxidation of cholesterol trapped in artery walls which is the first cause of the plaques that restrict coronary blood flow. We produce CoQ10 less efficiently as we age. The creeping tiredness that affects us later in life can be from insufficient CoQ10. Statin medications also reduce CoQ10 and is often responsible for many of the side effects including muscle weakness, pain and general malaise. Some problems especially autoimmune and neurological disease seem to lower CoQ10 levels possibly through increased demand from the disease processes. Most healthy people under 50 do not need CoQ10 supplements as we efficiently make all the CoQ10 we need. However, increasing age and some diseases make a strong case for controlled supplementation. I include it as nutritional support for most circulatory problems and many neurological and autoimmune diseases including Parkinson’s, MS, CFS, FM and PMR that all cause low energy. I regard it as essential when taking cholesterol medications to protect against muscle problems, fatigue and memory loss. For example I recently created a programme for someone with MS and she has noted a distinct improvement in her energy and general well being. I have had the same reports from people with Parkinson’s. We cannot greatly impact these disease process but we can help with the often crushing fatigue improving real quality of life. I add CoQ10 either as a separate patented US sourced product or as part of my own energy formula with CoQ10, B vitamins, resveratrol, lipoic acid and many other energy co factors. Concertos in church

New choir for Selwyn A lack of singing opportunities for young people has inspired Darfield resident Belinda Cullen-Reid to form a Selwyn Youth Choir.

 An attentive audience of music-lovers had a treat in store at Trinity Church, in Darfield last weekend. Pairing up for a selection on two concertos and other Romantic works were David Mueller-Cajar on French horn and Christchurch pianist Tim Emerson.

Boil water notice lifted Residents connected to the Selwyn Rural water supply no longer need to boil water. The water supply services Hororata and the surrounding area. A boil water notice was issued for the supply for turbidity as rainfall and snow melting disturbed the water supply intake. When a water supply shows high turbidity, water treatment methods cannot be guaranteed to be effective. Selwyn District Council’s team leader water services Andy Olivier says the water supply turbidity levels have now lowered and the water is safe to drink without boiling. “The council wishes to thank residents for their patience while the notice was in place.” ¢

Belinda is a well known local performer. With a son who was keen to follow in his mother’s footsteps Belinda looked around for somewhere for him to enjoy singing. “There seems a void of singing opportunities for young people in our district, so I thought, I may as well create something,” she said. Belinda has big ambitions for the Selwyn Youth Choir, which is for children aged eight years and over. She sees the choir eventually performing at public and private functions around the district. “We will meet weekly for rehearsals and I will teach the children how to sing correctly. Once we are making a good sound and know some songs I

will be looking around for places for the choir to perform. It’s going to be quite exciting.” Belinda is a registered primary school teacher and former singing teacher. She has performed in Selwyn, North Canterbury and Christchurch and is now a member of the Christchurch Pop Choir run by Luke Di Somma. “Luke has been very encouraging about the choir. I’m learning a lot about how to run an awesome choir from Luke. He’s a real inspiration.” Selwyn Youth Choir has its own Facebook page and can be found at www.facebook.com/ selwynyouthchoir. Co-operating parish minister bids farewell  by Philip Baldwin

After more than nine years of service the Malvern Cooperating Parish will farewell their minister, Laurie Ennor. Looking back on his time Laurie says “there have been challenges, but those were not insurmountable, we’ve worked with them, to try and spread myself around”. “Darfield is only half an hour away (from home) and it’s mainly open road, and round the parish it’s beautiful country to drive around.” Laurie’s memories of his ministry include the special services, like baptisms, weddings, and funerals which he says “touch deep into people’s lives”. “I also have special memories of the Anzac services at Darfield which continue to be significant occasions for the community.” Other highlights include performing music with choirs of Malvern folk, particularly the world premiere of a cantata called Come, Redeemer, written by an Auckland composer, Matthew Raymond, who was there the night it was performed. He also has fond memories of several men’s groups which met weekly through the winter months. “They’ve been great for guys. We’ve had up to a dozen men on those nights.” This year’s series entitled ‘What is church?’ will carry on after Laurie leaves. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. One of the privileges of pastoral ministry is that people allow you into their lives at a depth that probably nobody else gets to.”

 Malvern Cooperating Parish minister Laurie Ennor will bid farewell to his parishioners later this month

The parish’s Settlement Board, including representatives from the various local congregations, the regional Presbyterian church, the Methodist Synod, and the Canterbury Regional Forum, the body which oversees co-operating churches in Canterbury, has begun a process to find a replacement. “Someone for full-time, two-year intentional transitional ministry,” parish secretary Maureen Frew says. “Laurie has been fantastic in terms of his preaching, that’s been a real plus. He’s always organised, and we’re going to miss his musical skills, as well as his caring pastoral work with those who are sick or bereaved,” she says. Looking forward, Laurie remarked on the title of a book that recently caught his attention ‘Don’t Retire — Rewire’. He is considering opportunities of different forms of ministry, which will likely be shortterm or part-time positions. “Overall, I’m positive about the future,” Laurie says.

Selwyn Central welcoming to newcomers  by Kent Caddick

A Selwyn District Council analysis of the Selwyn Central ward community has found new residents into the area are feeling very much at home but there is a lack of social opportunities for young people. The analysis, by independent researcher Sarah Wylie, was commissioned by the council to help it formulate developmental policies for the Rolleston and West Melton areas. Council’s community services manager Lesley Symington said they have done this type of analysis for Lincoln, Leeston and Darfield in the past and given the increase in the Selwyn Central ward population in recent years it was time to update their information on this community. “The analysis tells us what we are doing well and where there are gaps, not just in what the council provides but also other areas of social infrastructure which council doesn’t provide. Council can then lobby those organisations which provide those services on behalf of the community,” Symington says. “We were pleased to see the response from new residents was that they have been happy with the support they have received when moving into the district.” The analysis said ‘the community was welcoming and friendly’ and attributed this to the fact that many in the community were newcomers themselves not so long ago. It noted that Selwyn Central was ‘disproportionately comprised of young families, predominantly twoparent working families’ which resulted in a ‘lack of things to do’ for youth, particularly those who weren’t sport orientated. The analysis also reported that ‘the rate of growth (was) outstripping social infrastructure development’ and pointed to the lack of planning for elder care needs including respite care, lack of mental health services particularly for

youth and the lack of a Work and Income presence, as areas to be addressed. Among the report’s recommendations were the revival of the Selwyn Wellbeing Network, the development of a disability strategy and the need to address the issue of social housing. It also recommended the development of a drop-in space for young people and more support for youth workers in the area. ¢

I have been involved in the media for over 20 years after graduating from the University of Canterbury with a post-graduate Diploma of Journalism. During that time I have worked for a number of national news organizations such as Radio New Zealand, National Radio, NewstalkZB and Sky Sport. For the last 13 years I have been involved in the community newspaper industry both as a reporter and an editor, principally around Canterbury. The community news environment is extremely exciting to me and I take pride in helping local people tell their stories and in keeping the community informed about what is happening around them.

I was brought up on a farm in the Hawkes Bay and love the country and Agricultural industry. I have spent the past few years of my life exercising racehorses and focussing on my education. I have acquired a Degree in Business with a major in Management, a Graduate Diploma in Agriculture with a major in Rural Banking, also a National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing. Having recently moved from Auckland to Christchurch, I have been impressed by the sense of community in the rural areas and am happy to call Selwyn my home.

I haved been living in Rolleston for over five years and the Selwyn district for over 15 years. I have been a managing director for The Garage Sale NZ Ltd and recently worked in sales for Burnco Marine based in Christchurch. My working career has always had a sales element to it as sales manager for What’s On Sale, a web based trading company, and managing director of Healthaire South Island. The Selwyn district is the fastest growing region in New Zealand providing huge commercial opportunities for the many businesses which call it home and I am keen to play a part in those companies being able to achieve their full potential.

I grew up on a farm in Glenroy and went to high school here in Darfield; I feel it is great to be a part of a safe and friendly community. I moved overseas for a number of years, but somehow Darfield has always been home to me. I moved back here eight years ago and now am raising my three children here. I have worked for The Malvern Record now for two years and have enjoyed seeing the changes and growth that has been happening to our community and being involved in The Record.

The eyes have it Iridology is a practice that promotes an eye analysis to reveal a person’s relative state of health through looking at tissue integrity to tell if they have over or under activity in specific areas of the body. The iris is considered to record information, through reflex response, about the state and functioning of every organ in the body. It is similar to how acupuncture and reflexology looks at the body as an energy system. The iris reveals body constitution, inherent weaknesses, inflammations, level of health and transitions that take place due to lifestyle. “Along with a proper case history and physical examination sometimes backed up by laboratory analysis, iridology is a valuable tool for both practitioner and patient,” says Michael McCammon N.D. “It is one of the best assessment tools available to be able to know the areas of the body that are genetically strong as well as efficient. It is a safe, painless, non invasive and inexpensive method of analysis.

“For the doctor it gives an immediate indication of the ‘ground’ and treatment protocols — for the patient the understanding of the situation and why and how long treatment may take. It is my opinion that the science of Iridology is the most powerful and cost effective diagnostic tool in natural healing.”

An exam is a one-on-one assessment that starts with a picture of the eyes taken with a specially designed camera, or a magnifying glass detailing your personal blueprint. An in depth analysis is given and a summary of findings is presented.

GARDENING

Joy in winter vegetables  by Paul Campbell

It’s never too late to get into the garden, and while the shorter colder days and longer nights are with us, there’s no reason not to have a range of winter vegetables coming along to cheer up the family fare. After all, everything it seems is increasing in price and the supermarket shelves are no exception. At this time of year, less sun of course will cut down on growth rates, but if you have some frost shelter its time to get those seedlings in. Constant gardeners, those folk who manage to avoid the supermarket vegetable department all year round, say that raised garden beds are the best way to go, with a bit of wind shelter where appropriate. And in colder climates, a little cover and wind protection can negate frosts to some extent. Another good trick is to line the surface of the soil with a layer of mulch, or straw. There’s also nothing wrong with layers of old newspapers either, and this will also inhibit the growth of weeds.

Hanging baskets under the carport are another idea, and it saves trudging through a wet lawn when you want to pick a few herbs. Of course if you are lucky enough to have a poly-house, or glasshouse you can look forward to a huge variety of vegetables as well as the good old standbys of silverbeet, broccoli, brussel sprouts and even some of the more robust varieties of lettuce. If in any doubt, it might pay to pop along to your local garden centre for advice. Depending once again on where your garden is set up you could consider spring onions, radishes, cabbages, peas even. The list goes on. But there is also more to just getting advice on what to plant and putting it in the ground. More than any other time of

year, your winter plants need nurturing. It’s not time to plant and forget. Have you made sure the plant is in the right place? Look at the light, dampness and exposure to wind and frost. Plants should be healthy when you get them home from the garden centre. They need to get their roots established, so watch over them until they get that done. A little plant food fertiliser goes a long way to help. So lets look now at other ways to help our vegetables into the kitchen. Vegetables of course require regular

watering. Without it they will simply not fill out. You can’t always rely on rain. If you have the means, a drip irrigation system is a definite plus for a vegetable garden. The new component systems are relatively inexpensive and also really quite easy to install. And you’ll save money on water, because it goes directly to the plant’s roots, rather than being sprayed over a wider area. If the drip system is not for you try and site your vegetable garden near the tap. continued on page 13…

Home of the week

GARDENING …continued from page 12

A gentle application from a watering can sometimes beats having to drag the hose out. There are a couple of other considerations. Chilblains should not be on the agenda, and thus a good pair of gardening gloves, and a selection of garden tools, are a good idea. And winter wetness doesn’t encourage kneeling on the ground. Make sure the handles are long ones. A spade, fork, a weeder, and maybe a little pest control might be needed, again, consult your garden centre. But at the end of the day the most vital consideration you have to take into account is the soil in which your food is going to grow. Vegetables need a soil rich in organic material — something easily achieved by compost made from kitchen scraps or commercially available, and it’s maybe a bit like free range eggs — what your plants ingest can have a marked effect on their taste on the table. At the end of the day, if you get the three basics right — sunlight, water and a good well-fertilised soil… you are winter gardening! ¢
