Agri tech growing in New Zealand

New Zealand’s primary industries need to latch on to technology …

Katherine Jayne and her partner Hamish MacPherson are members of Foster Hope, a national organisation which aims to give support to those who take in children when their birth parents are unable to look after them. They have recently agreed to be a collection point for Foster Hope in Selwyn to gather items youngsters will need for a start with their new foster family.

For Katherine it is a very personal mission. “When I was younger I was in foster care for a while and I had amazing foster parents,” she said. Katherine recently discovered Foster Hope through Facebook and watched a couple of the organisation’s videos. “I really felt in my heart that this was a good way to give something back and Hamish, who saw I was quite

emotional about the cause and wanting to do something, encouraged me to get involved. I contacted Foster Hope through their website and told them I loved what they were doing and wanted to help.” She and Hamish agreed to be a drop point for people who want to offer new items for the foster children and their carers.

p Archery was just one of the many activities on offer at last year’s ‘Have a Go Day’

The annual event run by the Selwyn District Council is now in its third year and this year will be held on Sunday, August 27 between 12 and 3pm at the Lincoln Event Centre and Domain. Council’s senior events and recreation advisor Dave Tippett said around 30 indoor and outdoor sports, activities, games and challenges are being planned. “Have a Go Day aims to showcase the sport and recreation activities

Lincoln and the wider Selwyn District has to offer. “Last year it was a very popular event with over 1,000 people enjoying a day of trying out new things.” Mr Tippett said among the sports on offer will be golf, hockey, rugby league, highland games, yoga, basketball, archery and mini gym. “Coffee, a sausage sizzle, and live music will be provided as part of the entertainment.” ¢

Locals recently held a ball in the West Melton Community Hall to farewell the old hall which is set to be removed to make way for a $6.9 million multipurpose community and recreation centre adjacent to the domain. The money raised from the ball will go to help community fundraising for the new community centre. The committee behind the ball recently met up with Bruce Russell, chair of the new West Melton Community and Recreation Centre working party, to present him with a letter of intent

to transfer the residue of the old hall’s, last ball’s bank account of $3,770 to the new facility’s fundraising account. Mr Russell said they are delighted with the contribution. “It is much appreciated and any such contribution from the community will help to reduce the subsequent impact of the new centre on ratepayers.” The new purpose-built Community and Recreation Centre will replace both the old West Melton Community Hall and the West Melton Playcentre and provide a home to local groups. ¢

Flooding forced the evacuation of residents from the Selwyn Huts area while roads were closed and boil water notices put in place across the district. Selwyn Civil Defence local controller Douglas Marshall said although river levels have lowered and most roads throughout the district reopened, residents should be aware of remaining hazards. “This was a significant flood event which required a swift response from the council and I’m grateful to all volunteers as well as staff and contractors who worked in very difficult conditions,” Mr Marshall said. “Thank you also, to the Selwyn residents who cooperated with officials during evacuations and others who provided local updates and assistance through our network of volunteers. “We’re fortunate that very few homes in the district were affected by the flooding, however there is still a lot of water on farmland and the council asks that residents are patient and cautious on the roads this week.”

Although some road closures have been lifted, a number will remain in place until contractors can undertake repairs to make roads safe. Most river fords remain closed and unsafe. Contractors are continuing to monitor flood-affected areas and will inspect bridges and sealed and unsealed roads over the coming days, focussing on the worst hit areas first. Precautionary boil water notices remain in place until further notice for Hororata, Acheron, Springfield, Malvern Hills (both Hartley’s and Dalethorpe) and Upper Selwyn Huts. Mr Marshall said there are many new potholes on the roads throughout the district and council contractors are out doing repairs as quickly as possible. Residents can report potholes and any other roading issues via the council Helpline on 03 347 2800, or by using the ‘Snap, Send, Solve’ app. ¢

Among the support Foster Hope gives to foster parents is to provide backpacks filled with everything from toothbrushes to nappies and clothing like underwear and pyjamas for children entering foster care. They also provide flat packs for older foster children who are leaving home for the first time and help to raise funds for children who are being cared for to attend YMCA camps as many grandparents who care for children can’t access fostering grants. Katherine and Hamish’s home is now a drop-off point for Foster Hope for new items. “For hygiene reasons many items like toiletries, socks, underwear and pyjamas need to be new but Foster Hope does take pre-loved items, like near-new clothing and bedding. “So the backpacks are a kick start for the children so they are not turning

up empty handed and to let them know people are thinking about them.” Christchurch Foster Hope coordinator Ngaire Worsley said she doesn’t believe the number of children heading into foster care is growing but the demand for what they can provide is increasing as people become more aware of what Foster Hope can provide. She said some of the children come into foster care with nothing as they may have been placed in care through Oranga Tamariki which is the Ministry for Vulnerable children (formerly known as CYFs). “There may be carers and foster parents out there who haven’t heard about us and also older children who have left care and missed out on support like our flat packs.” People wanting to help out should first go to the Foster Hope website, www.fosterhope.org.nz for more details. ¢

James Ranstead, who is in the third year of a Bachelor of Science degree with a conservation and ecology major, has been awarded a Southern Environmental Trust Scholarship, given to students undertaking studies which relate to environmental management and planning. The Southern Environmental Trust is run by the Rotary Club of Christchurch South. Mr Ranstead, who was president of the Lincoln Environment Organisation in 2016, said his environmental interests are broad. “My knowledge, experience and interests are heavily based around

conservation,” he said. “On my semester break I volunteered on a kokako translocation from Pureora Forest Park to Pirongia Forest Park. “Recently, I coordinated a stoat trapping trip, and was also involved in great spotted kiwi monitoring and transmitter removal in the Nina Valley of the Lewis Pass. “I am currently a part of the DOC Growing Voices team, where we are planning some conservation based events for youth in Canterbury, following on from our youth submission on the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park Management Plan late last year,” he said.  ¢

rank and are high in nitrogen and potassium, throwing the soils mineral balance out of whack.

There may not be a silver bullet answer to these troubles, but you can certainly make a start in the right direction by giving your horse soured paddocks a little TLC.

Bringing your soil back into balance needn’t be a chore. A simple way of providing the necessary calcium and magnesium is by using Equi-lise. Equi-lise also contains phosphorus, sulphur and a small amount of Selenium too. Being in pellet form and 100% plant available means the amount required is much less compared to using straight aglime! It is super easy to apply to small horse paddocks either by hand or a small push spreader or tow behind spreader.

Healthy horse pastures and healthy horses rely on healthy soils. A lot of the problems we see with ‘grass affected horses’ can be caused by mineral deficiencies. The grass might look healthy, but lacks key minerals especially calcium and magnesium. There are huge health benefits to horses and other livestock by having correctly balanced soils. Horses are particularly hard on pastures. They “sour” paddocks by overgrazing and with their daily deposits of dung and urine. These areas become

Using Equi-lise will raise the pH of your paddocks. This will help increase the microbiology in the soil, helping to break down the manure and remove the ‘sour’ patches in the paddock, enabling your horses to graze your paddocks more evenly. Sweet!

“You sent me a sample of your fabulous Equi-lise product and that part of my paddocked I used to test it out on looks amazing! As you can see, the horses love the grass. Thank you, your product is a must for horse paddocks!”

Malvern St John has benefitted to the tune of almost $6,000 thanks to a group of motorcycle enthusiasts. The Ulysses Club Canterbury Branch has a tradition of fundraising for St John’s for almost 30 years which has enabled the purchase of many valuable ambulance and training items. Club members recently visited St John in Darfield to hand over a cheque for $5,950 to the organisation, which was the proceeds from their annual Anzac Day fun ride to Akaroa. Malvern St John Area Committee chair Ann Shepherd said on the Anzac Day ride the Ulysses Club riders were supported by two Malvern St John cadets and two Darfield ambulance officers. “It was an amazing day for participants and supporters alike,” she said. On their recent visit to Darfield 23 Ulysses Club members were shown around the ambulance station and the vehicles while some keen members offered their services as patients for local St John cadets to practise on for their upcoming competitions. “Malvern St John is very grateful for this generous donation which will enable the purchase of equipment for both

Selwyn off-road enthusiasts will be heading to West Melton early next month for a Canterbury Off-road Racing Club event. The event to be held at the club’s Weedons Ross Road track will be held on Sunday, August 6 and is the final South Island short course event before the National finals which will be held in Nelson in October. There will be several different classes of vehicle involved in the racing, ranging from the small kids trophy trucks (50cc engines) through to the big V8 truck class. Between races the Canterbury ATV Club will be putting on a display of quad bike racing. CORC president Gavin Storer said they are working to make the sport more family orientated. “Off-road racing has traditionally been seen as a male dominated sport however we are endeavouring to focus on the family aspect of racing. “We actively promote both youth and female participation both on and off the track, and the club is spending this season trying to create a more family orientated culture. “We already see a community style culture in the pits during racing, with everyone and anyone lending a hand to those that need it, and we want to

With competition leader’s Waihora sitting out the final round with a bye Darfield and defending champion’s Southbridge seized their opportunities to leap-frog Waihora to claim home ground advantage for the semis. The shocking weather conditions on Saturday forced the cancellation of all matches but the crucial division one matches between Darfield and Rolleston, and Southbridge against Prebbleton, were transferred to Sunday. Southbridge secured top spot heading into the semis with a 22-13 win over Prebbleton, which finished the

round-robin competition in fourth place meaning it will face Southbridge again this weekend in the semis. Darfield meanwhile thumped Rolleston 70-0 in its match which had been transferred to Darfield following the closure of the Rolleston ground. The home side raced out to a 32-0 lead by halftime and continued to pile on the points in the second half. The wins for Darfield and Southbridge meant both sides finished on 34 points after the round-robin, with Southbridge earning top spot due to its better points differential. ¢

The early years

Is your child ready for preschool? Most early childhood education centres or preschools will accept children from 0 to 6 years of age, but that doesn’t mean your child is magically ready for preschool when they reach that age. Readiness for preschool has more to do with where your child is developmentally. Is he or she socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively ready to participate in a daily, structured, educational programme with a group of other children? Though it’s tempting to look for a quick answer to this question, to read

a list of skills for instance, and say, ‘Yes my child can do these things, he/she’s ready,’ that method isn’t foolproof. The best way to decide is to spend time thinking about your child and to talk to other people who know him or her well, such as your partner, your paediatrician, and your child’s caregiver. The following questions will help you

• Our Nursery is a homelike, modern lounge • Our Toddler Space has a balance of new experiences & comforting routines • Our Tamariki Nui, (big kids preschool) includes a dedicated Art Studio

think about the most important factors for preschool readiness: Is your child fairly independent? Early childhood education centres require children to have certain basic skills — most will want your child to be potty-trained, for instance. Your child should also be able to take care of some other basic needs, like washing their hands after painting, eating lunch without assistance, and sleeping alone.

Has he/she spent time away from you? If your child has been cared for by a babysitter or a relative, they will be better prepared to separate from you when at preschool. Children who are used to being apart from their parents often bounce right into preschool with hardly a backward glance. If your child hasn’t had many opportunities to be away from you, might want to schedule some — a weekend

THE BEST LITTLE PRESCHOOL IN LINCOLN Melodies Preschool is a small boutique preschool of only 30 children per day nestled in the heart of Lincoln township that provides high quality care and education for boys and girls aged 2-5 years. Our Unique daily programme incorporates specialist music, dance, gym and art sessions using the Carl Orff approach and Gill Connell’s Moving Smart programme. The children enjoy discovering, creating and exploring our indoor environment which includes a spacious music room and art room. The natural outdoor environment is designed with your child’s creativity and physical development in mind. Static equipment is limited so that children are able to create their own huts, games, obstacle courses and always be physically challenged. Every day the

outdoor environment is different. Our low child to teacher ratio of 7 children to 1 teacher (Ministry Regulations are 10:1) provides a nurturing attentive atmosphere where children are engaged in meaningful play where there is always a teacher to care, support and extend on your child’s interest. It also allows teachers to provide amazing activities, lessons and interactions that would not otherwise happen in a higher child to teacher ratio environment. We also provide an exceptional Transition to School programme for 4-5 year old’s that is highly regarded by local New Entrant Teachers and Principals. Children at Melodies become happy creative, confident, innovative learners. Here are some facts about how children develop.

HOW CHILDREN LEARN AND DEVELOP 90% of a child’s brain develops in the first 5 years. Quality experiences and interactions help shape your child’s future during this time. Music develops a separate part of the brain that is linked to memory and awakens the senses and creativity. Children learn through movement and real sensory experiences. HIGH QUALITY PRESCHOOL EDUCATION IS THE SMALLEST MOST IMPORTANT INVESTMENT YOU COULD MAKE TO YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE.

The early years with grandma, for instance, or a day with your sister and her children. Some experts believe that preschool may even be more important for children who’ve been at home with their parents, to help get them ready for the move to primary school. Can he/she work on projects on his own? Preschool usually involves lots of arts and crafts projects that require concentration and the ability to focus on an individual task. If your child likes to draw at home or gets engrossed in puzzles and other activities on their own, they are a good candidate for preschool. But even if yours is the kind of child who asks for help with everything, you can start getting them ready by setting up play times where they can entertain themselves for a half hour or so. Is he/she ready to participate in group activities? Many preschool activities, like ‘circle time’, require that all the children in a class participate at the same time. These interactions give children a

chance to play and learn together, but also require them to sit still, listen to stories, and sing songs. This can be very difficult for children under three who are naturally active explorers and not always developmentally ready to play with other children. If your child isn’t used to group activities, you can start introducing them yourself. Take him/her to story time at your local library, for instance, or sign them up for a class such as tumbling to help them get used to playing with other children. Is he/she used to keeping a regular schedule? Preschools usually follow a predictable routine: circle time, play time, snack, playground, then lunch. There’s a good reason for this. Children tend to feel most comfortable and in control when the same things happen at the same time each day. So if your child doesn’t keep to a schedule and each day is different from the last, it can help to standardise their days a bit before he/she starts preschool. Start

by offering meals on a regular timetable. You could also plan to visit the park each afternoon or set — and stick to — a bedtime ritual (bath, then books, and bed). Why do you want to send him/her to preschool? Think carefully about what your goals are for sending your child to preschool. Do you just need time for yourself or day-care for your child? There may be other options if it seems your child isn’t ready yet for the rigours of an early childhood centre.

Are you worried that if you don’t enrol your child in preschool he/she won’t be ready for primary school? If you find that the main reasons you want to send your child to preschool are that he/she seems eager to learn new things and explore, they aren’t getting enough stimulation at home, or they seem ready to broaden their social horizons and interact with other children, chances are it’s the perfect time to start at an early childhood education centre. ¢

Retirement

Planning for the golden years Retirement should be a time of choice, when we’ll finally have the time and freedom to do all those things on the bucket list. But life after we stop working can also mean having to live on less income than before. Government help is available — including New Zealand Super and there are other choices that we can make to have our money flowing when we step back from work. Going into retirement doesn’t mean we stop earning income. From the age of 65 most New Zealand residents receive NZ Super every fortnight and income can also come from savings, paid work or business activity. Depending on our personal situation we might qualify for extra help from the government for health, medical and housing costs. We may also qualify for other assistance — for example, if we face an emergency situation, or if we need help with essential costs. Contact the local Senior Services centre, usually located at Work and Income or visit the Ministry of Social Development website There are also ways to actually save money in retirement. The SuperGold

Card is a discounts and concessions card available free to all New Zealanders who are aged 65 years or over and using it regularly can help save money on dayto-day expenses. Contact the SuperGold Card Centre on 0800 25 45 65. A Community Services Card can help with the cost of healthcare. If we qualify, we’ll pay less on some health services and prescriptions. Later in retirement, we may have to rethink where we want to live. One option is to move to a retirement village; of course there are other choices. We could choose to stay home, downsize to a smaller home that’s closer to facilities. Moving into a retirement village is different. The financial arrangements are more complex and villages vary in their accommodation and facilities, services, support and care, legal and financial structures, philosophy and management. A decision to move into a village is important

SINGLE RELINE SPECIAL $250.00

as it has long-term personal and financial consequences. Thinking about residential care? The first stage is to have a needs assessment that will indicate whether we may be eligible for a Residential Care Subsidy.

If we qualify, the subsidy and most of our NZ Super will be used to pay for care, leaving just a small amount of personal money to spend. For more information on retirement options contact Senior Services on 0800 552 002. ¢

Retirement

Beware the dark side u by Paul Campbell

As baby boomers reach the golden years, their retirement is increasingly made more interesting with technology, the internet and smart phones keeping them connected with family and friends across the world. There are a number of community service groups bringing those with sudden time on their hands into the computer world, but many people simply enjoy teaching themselves. But with this comes the opportunity for the unscrupulous, and nary a week goes by without a story of an unsuspecting internet user, often elderly, being scammed, some by offering opportunities to earn thousands of dollars a week. The Department of internal Affairs offers anti-spam advice and for up-todate information on scams running in New Zealand visit the Ministry of Consumer Affairs Scam Watch website. The most common scam to watch for is the so-called Nigerian fee. This longrunning scam offers you a percentage of millions of dollars in exchange for an up-front fee and letting the sender use your bank account to transfer the funds from where they are currently held. The Nigerian letter has many variations, and despite its name can come from anywhere in the world. Prize notifications tell you that you have won a prize in

a lottery you haven’t entered. But you have to pay money to the operators before they will ‘release the money’. Phishing attacks use ‘spoof’ emails and fraudulent websites designed to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, bank and other account usernames and passwords. By hijacking the trusted brands of well-known banks, online retailers and credit card companies, phishers are able to convince up to five percent of recipients to respond to them. Do not forward hoax emails. Take a common sense approach when you receive strangely worded or sensationalist emails in your inbox — if you think the email is a hoax it probably is. Do your friends a favour and don’t pass them on. Unless the email is from a known and trusted source, do not open attachments or click on links, as these can infect your computer with malicious programmes. Think twice about emails from trusted sources but are ‘forwards’ of joke

Agri tech growing in New Zealand New Zealand’s primary industries need to latch on to technology faster to support the economic growth of its agri sector according to NZTech chief executive Graeme Muller. NZTech represents more than 400 organisations across the country to promote technology use in various industries including farming. Graeme Miller said a growing awareness of the value of technology in agriculture can be seen by the number of farmers looking into technologies such as drones, sensors and robotics, Muller says. “A report by the IoT Alliance that looks into the economic value that IoT could bring the New Zealand economy, has identified that better use of internet technology by dairy farmers could potentially generate as much as $448 million worth of net economic benefit for New Zealand.” Mr Miller said New Zealand is achieving good agritech export growth rates relative to other nations. “Global agritech investment is expanding rapidly, with investment in agritech firms in 2014 being estimated at over $US2.36 billion making investment in agritech higher than fintech. “With our traditional strengths in agriculture and our growing strengths in tech, this is an opportunity we should pursue with vigour.”

p NZTech chief executive Graeme Muller says New Zealand has the potential to become a world leader in a fast growing agritech market

He said agriculture is a big user and creator of technology. “Tech sector innovations are being adopted in many agricultural areas. “Production costs have placed pressure on the competitive position of New Zealand agriculture in world markets. Reversing a slowdown in productivity growth is critical given the challenges the sector faces with

More research wanted for rural health The head of the national rural health group has made a plea for the government to consider much-needed rural research. Michelle Thompson, chief executive of the Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand (RHAANZ) says there is a strong feeling that rural health outcomes are poorer than urban health outcomes but until they have the hard data they can’t be sure whether there is a difference or understand the scale of the difference. Earlier this year the RHAANZ presented its five most urgent priorities to government, one of which included comprehensive rural health research support. Ms Thompson said it was a relief to see the government recently provide a further half million dollars for rural mental health initiatives. “This is a good sign to us they agree, in the absence of hard data — this is an area of concern. “We know very little about the people who live and work in rural New Zealand from a health perspective. “To do this we first need a nationally agreed definition on rurality as it pertains to health in New Zealand. “Then we need to ensure that the Ministry of Health, the district health

boards and primary health organisations use this definition to routinely report health statistics using a rural to urban comparison.“ Ms Thompson said they believe the lack of a fit-for-purpose definition of rural is a major stumbling block to progress on rural mental health issues. “Until we have such a definition that is routinely used across Government neither we, nor the government, can write informed health policy. Neither can we be sure that our precious resources are being targeted to where they are most needed. “It is not okay that we don’t know whether our children are disadvantaged because they have poorer access to maternity and youth health services than urban children, for example. “We just don’t know whether our outcomes for cancer are poorer because of the extra difficulties getting to chemotherapy or radiotherapy services. Logic would tell us that having to travel long distances to services would make a difference but we can’t be sure about this without a firm evidence base.”

She said as well as a new definition of rural they want to see a rural proofing tool reinstated across policy development in New Zealand. “We used to have this 10 years ago but it appears to have dropped off the scene,” Ms Thompson said. “Rural proofing requires our policymakers to take into account the circumstances and needs of rural communities and rural business when developing and implementing policy before the policy is introduced. “This is to enable any unintended consequences to be addressed before the policy is rolled out. Consideration of low population density and isolation are critical to rural proofing. “While rural definitions and rural proofing may sound dry and boring, they are seen as absolutely essential to get right. “Words talk but numbers shout. Without hard evidence, it’s pretty much impossible to make a case to government for additional support and resourcing for rural communities.” ¢
