The new purpose-built primary will cater for 400 students when it opens in 2022 on land the government purchased for $3m within the Acland Park subdivision. In making the announcement education minister Chris Hipkins said that since the earthquakes, more families are choosing to move to towns like Rolleston.

“The Canterbury region is a unique area because there’s significant growth in school-age kids in the outskirts of the central city,” he said. “That is why we’ve bought land for a brand-new primary school in Rolleston. We’re significantly expanding Lemonwood Grove School for 350 extra students and building 16 classrooms at six other Canterbury schools.

“This is just the start. As the projects progress, we will be making further school property investments in Canterbury. The Canterbury Region Growth Plan is part of the National Education Growth Plan unveiled earlier this month.

With local government elections coming up in October, the council’s District Plan Committee, which has been making decisions on the direction of the new District Plan, held its final meeting for the year last week. “It’s timely to give everyone interested in the review of our current District Plan an update on where we are at and what to expect next,” said Tim Harris, council’s group manager environmental and regulatory services. “There are some areas of the current plan that still need further targeted consultation with stakeholders and landowners, but most of the proposed detailed policies and rules for the Proposed Plan have now been drafted and consulted on,” he said. Following last year’s initial public consultation on the general direction of the future plan, the council has done a

lot of targeted consultation with affected landowners and stakeholders on more detailed draft rules and policies across a range of topics relevant to business, rural or residential communities. “We would like to thank everyone who’s provided feedback and helped shaped the future District Plan so far,” said Harris. Anyone wanting to have a further say on the future District Plan and to see the detailed draft provisions will have the opportunity when the plan is notified. It’s expected that the Proposed District Plan will be notified for formal public consultation in early 2020 and be fully in place, subject to any Environment Court appeals, in mid-2022. In the meantime, to find out more about the future District Plan, all reports developed during the review are on the council’s website. ¢

Measles case confirmed in Canterbury

New school for Rolleston

u by Mike Isle

A Canterbury infant has been confirmed as having measles; it is now more important than ever that everyone ensures they are fully vaccinated against measles, said the District Health Board.

p Poto Williams speaks to senior students

The infant and family returned to Christchurch from Auckland where there is a major measles outbreak, with more than 300 confirmed cases to date. It is thought that this is where they contracted the highly infectious disease. The infant had not yet received their first dose of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is routinely given at 15 months, with a second one at four years of age. The District Health Board is advising anyone who was in Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department on Friday, July 19 between 10pm and 3.45am the next day, or on Sunday, July 21 between 11.40pm and 1.40am the next morning should remain isolated until Monday, August 5, unless they are sure that they

have had two MMR vaccinations or are more than 50 years of age. Dr Alistair Humphrey, Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, said that people are infectious from five days before the onset of the rash until five days after the rash appears, so it is possible to transmit the infection before you feel unwell. “People who have been exposed to a case and who are not immune should remain isolated from 7 to 14 days after their exposure. “This means staying home from school or work and having no contact with unimmunised people. If you are not sure whether you are immune telephone your GP — they can advise you,” he said. ¢

“We don’t want to see kids crammed in school libraries and hallways — this puts a strain on the teachers and the students. When parents are sending their kids to their local schools, we want them to be confident that they’re learning in warm, dry and comfortable spaces. “For years, families, schools and the construction industry have been in limbo about any future investments in schools in their area, and schools have been struggling to keep up with growing school rolls. “Our plan catches up and brings the building of new schools and classrooms in line with future growth. It also gives the construction industry

certainty about what projects are in the pipeline. While there is no specific growth plan for the West Coast and Tasman regions at this stage, we are also building nine extra classrooms in those areas,” Chris Hipkins said. The principal of Lemonwood Grove School Sean Bailey told The Record that the Lemonwood Grove School community was excited about the announcement. “The government is being very responsive to the ongoing growth in Rolleston, especially in the southwest. Our stage two design will again be state of the art and will continue to drive effective collaboration between teachers and learners,” he said. 

Police remind tradies to keep gear secure u by Mike Isle

Police are reminding tradies to lock it or lose it, following increasing reports of thefts from 4x4s. Christchurch Metro Area prevention manager Inspector Leairne Dow says that tradies, in particular, should be cautious to secure valuable tools left in vehicles. “Police take this offending very seriously, we know the impact it has on victims, particularly when it’s someone’s livelihood being taken, she said. Inspector Dow said there are a number of steps tradies can take to keep their tools secure. “Parking vehicles out of sight, removing valuable items over weekends, securing tools inside vehicles with chains and padlocks or even a tarp thrown over the top of them can be useful deterrents. She said the free online asset list Serial Number Action Partnership (SNAP) website, is a useful tool for recording serial numbers, which

assist in the return of stolen property if located by police. “We encourage tradies to get their tools engraved with their driver licence number, and enter these on the SNAP website, so if the tools are recovered, we can return them.â€? Visit snap.org.nz (link is external) to register free. Anyone who is the victim of a crime or has information that may be useful to police should let the police know immediately. “Our prevention team are passionate about what they do. Our aim is to prevent harm in the community. Part of that is talking about what people can do to help keep themselves safe,â€? Inspector Dow said. “If you see a crime taking place call 111 immediately — if it has already occurred call 105.â€? ¢

Mayors walk the talk on water u by Mike Isle

Selwyn’s mayor Sam Broughton and other Canterbury mayors have reconfirmed their support for working together on looking after the region’s water resources. In a refresh of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS), members of the Canterbury Mayoral Forum have confirmed their support for the strategy. The forum also adopted new goals to improve and manage water in Canterbury and charged Environment Canterbury to work with councils and partners to find solutions for those goals. Broughton says the CWMS is an outstanding example to the rest of the country of a united, regional approach to managing water. Under the CWMS, 10 local zone committees with council, community and rununga members provide recommendations to Environment Canterbury on how to best address

issues at a local level. These can result in local rules in the form of plan changes that control certain activities in order to deliver the results the community requires. The Selwyn Waihora Zone committee has been a driving force behind several key projects, Broughton said. “The whole province working together is helping us to make a significant difference in improving water systems in Canterbury and protecting them for the future. We have seen some big projects in Selwyn to support our district, but it’s important to work together on such an important and precious resource as water.” ¢

Scholars give students Agriventures Lincoln University has hosted a three-day secondary school student Agriventures event to explore the extensive range of career opportunities available in the primary sector.

p Christina Fawcett, front centre, with the Agriventures students on a visit to Foodstuffs South Island Distribution Centre

The event was organised by a team of Lincoln Future Leader Scholars led by Christina Fawcett. As a component of the scholarship, the Lincoln students are required to initiate an event or opportunity that benefits Lincoln University or the wider community. Christina said the primary purpose of Agriventures was to open secondary school student’s eyes towards the many and varied career opportunities that lead from Lincoln University degrees that they may not even realise exist, whether they are from an agricultural background or not. “We are aiming to change perceptions by showcasing that agriculture is not solely linked with farming, but there are

so many other career paths within the agri-food and agribusiness industries.” Twelve, year 11 and 12 high school students from across the South Island had the chance to experience university life at Lincoln by staying on campus as well as exploring career opportunities first-hand through visiting industry leaders such as FMG, Synlait, Three Boys Brewery, Barry’s Bay Cheese, Farmlands Co-operative and Foodstuffs SI. She said Agriventures had great support from FMG. “They fully sponsored the programme so that there was no cost for the students to be able to attend. Not only this, they provided an interactive and stimulating workshop for the students and a bag full of treats and merchandise.” ¢

ADVERTORIAL

Soul Jam comes back For the fifth year, the Soul Jam event is coming back to the Darfield Recreation Centre on Sunday, July 8 promising to be as interesting, exciting and informative as ever, so come along and help yourself overcome being tired of being unwell, lethargic, ‘stuck’. Organisers say some new faces join the line-up of practitioners covering hypnotherapy, crystal healing, zero balance, mediumship, mindfulness, Reiki and everything in between! We now have a large community of professional holistic and spiritual practitioners throughout the district, covering a number of different modalities, so there are plenty to choose from when looking for a practitioner. If you find you are looking for a particular modality or have specific questions on the day just ask as we will be able to connect you with appropriate information. Our special guests include Alice with her wonderful herbal teas (made from her own medicinal herb garden), Dean doing his amazing ‘inner light’ drawings, and our great friends from the Crystal People shop. At Soul Jam we focus on sharing our knowledge and wisdom gained from training and experience, and present natural products, in order to assist you in exploring options for wellbeing and great health, plus personal and spiritual

growth and awareness. Discover and experience well-proven modalities, and dare to try something new! Take the time to join with like-minded people who can assist you on your journey through life. Our free talks/workshops/demos will commence at 11am, and these are a great opportunity to learn and ask questions. Rainbowlily, our amazing fairy will be with us each day for face painting (which is not restricted to the children!). Hearty refreshments are available. NZ Happy will be selling their recipe books produced especially to raise funds for mental health awareness. Husky Rescue will be selling their fundraising dog tags. Come along and immerse yourself in the wonderful atmosphere and possibilities generated — especially for your benefit! 10am–5pm Sunday, July 8 Darfield Recreation Centre. Adults $5, under 16s free and must be accompanied by a paying adult. Practitioners will be charging for individual services. Eftpos available for entry. Limited eftpos facilities in the expo.

Darfield’s shopping extravaganza u by Ann van Engelen

Stallholder registrations are now open for the annual Fundraising Shopping Day in support of the Malvern Cancer Support Group. The event will be held at the Darfield Recreation Centre from 10am–2pm on Sunday, November 3. “We are a local group who want to support the Malvern Cancer Support Group again this year. The support group will be providing refreshments throughout the day and running a fundraising raffle. It is a fun day out while people get to enjoy a great local shopping experience,” says co-organiser Pip Deans. “It is a way to give something back to the community. Stalls are predominantly inside, but if numbers exceed there are plenty of outside sites. A lot of people have hobbies or small businesses making great products and the day helps them showcase and sell their wares. The event has a great community feel and around 300–400 people came along last year.

“The Malvern Cancer Support Group don’t do much fundraising, and it is nice to be able to give back to them because there is always someone that is affected by cancer and need help. “We have been doing this event for seven to eight years and have grown with increased interest. Last year we raised more than $2,100.00 for the support group. “There will be activities for the whole family to enjoy including classic cars on display, raffles, face painting by Beyond the Faerie Tree, along with cupcake decorating and the Red Cross will also have a cake and produce stall. There will also be BBQ, food and refreshments available for purchase.” For more information go to the Shopping Extravaganza Darfield Facebook page or email pipdeans@xtra. co.nz. ¢

New king of the ring u by Andy Bryenton

The Bugatti Veyron. The Lamborghini Murcielago 640. The Mercedes-McLaren SLR. The Porsche 911 GT3. A group of supercars, which have more in common than merely sharing poster space on the bedroom walls of a generation. They all lapped the infamous Nurburgring circuit in Germany in 7 minutes 40 seconds. Now, this rarefied company of auto legends has a new member. While their records may have been beaten by other, more exotic hypercars, there’s a new addition to the 7:40 club that would have been unthinkable a few short years ago — a front-wheel-drive French hatchback. The French are the acknowledged kings of lunatic FWD tech, giving us such amazing examples in the past as the Peugeot 205 turbo. This time they’ve outdone themselves. Renault’s Megane RS Trophy R picked up the challenge

action power sports

from Honda’s equally mad Civic Type R (with its Star Wars exterior styling and triple exhausts) and hit the ‘ring with seasoned Renault racer Laurent Hurgon at the wheel. In motorsport terms, the three seconds by which the French bombshell blitzed the JDM rocketship is positively epochal. The next best contender, from Volkswagen, is left a Jurassic seven seconds behind. To put it in context, a bevy of Corvettes, the Nissan GT-R and the Merc AMG C63 Biturbo are all slower. All this is achieved with a mere 1.8

p Renault’s race-tuned version of the roadgoing Megane RS Trophy has smashed a top speed record for the French automaker

litres of displacement, delivering more than 300 horsepower and 400Nm of torque, all funnelled at high pressure through a six-speed EDC dual-clutch auto transmission. The front wheels do all of the work, both steering and delivering power to the ground, but it’s not just blistering the tarmac that makes the Renault Megane RS Trophy R so quick. It’s also super light and keeps in maximum contact with the black stuff thanks to the wizardry of the shocks,

tyres and brakes combo of Ohlins, Bridgestone and Brembo. Do you need all this furious power and lightweight handling in a hatch designed to handle the shopping and the school run? Unlikely. Does it mean that Renault will enjoy a certain cachet while they are wearing the crown? Absolutely. Would you rather still have a ‘slow’ old Bugatti? Your 10-year-old self might — but present-day you would rather have the Renault’s fuel bill. ¢

Auto & Marine

From the show to the streets This weekend saw the culmination of months of planning and, for some exhibitors, years of design and engineering. It was the annual CRC Speedshow in Auckland, a showcase of cars both classic and cutting edge, including the reveal of Toyota’s highly anticipated new Supra. It’s as close as we are likely to get in the flesh, here in New Zealand, to the grand auto shows of places like Geneva and Detroit. Places where the latest in auto tech is unveiled to the public. The problem is, many of the great, wild, interesting designs that come out of these auto shows never see the light of day or even turn a wheel. We are often treated to confections of carbon fibre and steel, which are without an engine; ones where the doors don’t even open. Sculpture and art, but not cars. The list of ‘almost-didn’t’ prototypes is enough to make a true petrolhead nervous. Mercedes thought their sublime gullwing SL would be a novelty but nothing more in the 1950s. Lamborghini nearly didn’t make the crazy LM-002 offroader in any numbers, until the motor show crowds (many of them from oil-rich Middle Eastern nations) started waving chequebooks excitedly. Other cars have been boiled down from exciting auto show offerings to bland also-rans, once those huge rims, sweeping curves and futuristic interiors have run into the brick wall of the accounts department. Saddest of all are those cars that have made it to the motor show but never seen production; cars like the Nissan Mid-4, a Toyota MR2 competitor,

IF IT’S MADE OF

which would have packed a midmounted twin-turbo V6 and looked like a Japanese Ferrari. Shinichiro Sakurai’s 330 hp, allwheel-drive supercar slayer, wowed the crowds in Frankfurt but was never built, partly, so it’s said because bosses felt it would detract from 300ZX sales. Thankfully, Toyota’s beautiful, mad, sixcylinder sports Supra is not a sketch or a concept. It’s very real and just as potent as the coveted series 4 in all its JDM glory.

Take that as a lesson, automakers of the world. Your graphs and surveys may say we want economy and clever seats. What we really want is the daring and boldness of auto show concepts, delivered in the real world. ¢
