He may not have placed in the grand finals of the Young Farmer of the Year competition last weekend, but Darfield dairy farm worker James Davidson is not feeling downhearted. This was only the second time Mr Davidson had entered the competition and he was amazed to have even made it to the grand finals held this year in Lincoln. “After the regional final I was labelled the dark horse. Just making it to the grand finals was an awesome achievement,” Mr Davidson said. Not overly competitive by nature the 25-year-old entered the competition for the fun of it. “It was just for the enjoyment of it and I wanted to test myself in a farming environment and see how I stacked up against others.” Mr Davidson had some success at the grand final, winning the Agrisports section of the competition. “I’ve learnt so much just from this weekend of competition. I’ve learnt different skills and did a lot I hadn’t done before. Being surrounded by a lot of intelligent people for the course of the weekend rubs off on you a little bit,” he said. He will now take a year off but hopes to compete again in two years’ time, this time preparing more extensively. “It was all a wee bit unknown, what to expect for the grand finals. The second time around I will know what to expect a lot more.” “You need well rounded knowledge of what’s going on, not just in New Zealand

but in the world. The business side of things is becoming more and more important in farming and that shows through in the grand final.” Originally from the Ashburton area, Mr Davidson moved to Selwyn earlier this year and works as second-incharge for sharemilkers Richard and Joanna Greaves on a dairy farm near Darfield, milking 14,000 cows.

He also owns 70 hectares at Glentunnel with some young stock, and hopes to own his own dairy farm in the future. “The opportunities are there at the moment. Things are getting tighter. New Zealand’s got this awesome story about being clean and green. We’ve got to look after that image and sell it.”

Stage Door theatre academy in Kirwee ended term two with a production of Animal Farm, a humorous adaptation of George Orwell’s book. Director Amanda Hopkins and her assistant Holly McLachlan worked with the children each week during the term to get them ready to put on the show. The students were aged between five and eleven-years-old, and some had never performed on stage before. The children learned their lines off-by-heart and performed two songs and a dance finale.

Darfield High School World Vision group has raised over $6,000 this year for people in Malawi. The group ran a disco, mufti day and 40-Hour Famine where students chose to experience poverty in a variety of ways, including living in cardboard boxes for a weekend and going without technology. “We want to help people who are worse off than us,” said the group’s spokesperson Ben Ridgen. Gavin Sole has some ideas for greenwaste recycling in parts of Selwyn which currently do not have kerbside collections.
The council’s events fund has $40,000 to distribute to local groups for events which attract visitors to Selwyn. The fund was established last year and was used to support 17 events including the Darfield Country Xmas in the Park, Hororata Highland Games and the Rolleston Community Fireworks Night. However, the Selwyn District Council’s solid waste manager wants to get a feel for public sentiment before anything goes forward. According to Mr Sole, Environment Canterbury’s ban on outdoor burning means residents must find new ways of disposing of their greenwaste. Some of his proposals include setting up local greenwaste depots, introducing kerbside collection in places where it is not currently available and rural drop off areas around the Malvern district of Selwyn. Mr Sole said the outcomes will be based on what people want and he is seeking feedback in public forums such
as a meeting at the Darfield library. “We want to find out if there is interest before we go ahead,” he said. “Comments we’ve received so far are that it’s hard to get rid of big, bulky green waste such as downed trees.” He said one possible solution might be a mobile shredding and collection service. “Once public opinion is known a cost analysis can be done and funding strategies can be explored.” Mr Sole said one possible source of funding might be from the waste levy but that the scale of the project must first be known before costs and timelines can be assessed.

Emerging artists feature in Darfield
The latest art exhibition to hit the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield features some of the country’s finest emerging artists. Rosa Allison, Tara Douglas and Jonathan Glover have either completed or are about to complete their studies at Canterbury University. The Malvern Community Arts Council has brought the trio together for its newest exhibition, entitled Emerging Artists, which opened at the gallery in Darfield late last week. MCAC arts co-ordinator Ingrid Cole said the gallery was thrilled to welcome the three emerging artists for a vibrant exhibition of painting, printmaking, works on paper, photography and sculpture. “These young artists are already making their mark on the New Zealand art scene, so do not miss out on seeing them at the beginning of their careers.” Ms Cole said Rosa Allison is in her fourth year of studying fine arts at Ilam, majoring in painting. “Her paintings use a technique referred to as
divisionism, first used by impressionist painters such as Seurat.” Tara Douglas’ work features handmade forms created from paper. “Tara recently completed a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury and has exhibited nationally, most recently including Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.” Ms Cole said Jonathan Glover, like Ms Allison, is a fourth year student at Canterbury University arts school, majoring in printmaking. “His work is mainly wrought by the process of silk-screening. It involves a lot of photography and painting and, at times, can have sculptural elements.” The Selwyn Gallery will be open daily, except for Mondays, from 10am to 4pm until the exhibition finishes on July 31.

This is the basis of a democracy — we all have the right to our view and our views are all given equal weight. The only way your views will not be counted is if you don’t make the effort to actually get out and vote. New Zealand has a proud history as a democratic nation, being the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. Our soldiers in both World Wars fought to protect the right of New Zealanders to determine their own destiny. Even today, people in many countries still do not have the right to vote free from pressure or intimidation. Under MMP it is the party vote alone that determines who the next Government will be and every single party vote cast across the country is tallied to determine the overall number of MPs each party receives. So, whichever party you support, make sure you get yourself enrolled and turn up to vote on September 20.

Selwyn voters urged to enrol The Electoral Commission is urging Selwyn voters to make sure they are enrolled to vote in this year’s general election on September 20. A growing number of Selwyn communities are taking the initiative to prepare themselves for emergencies. Currently over 900 Neighbourhood Support Groups, made up of more than 4,000 households, exist in Selwyn and the numbers continue to grow. Selwyn’s Community Response coordinator Sue Jenkins said being part of a group is all about strengthening communities and being prepared to look after each other in an emergency. “Belonging to a Neighbourhood Support Group is also a great way to get to know your neighbours and enhance the feeling of safety in your neighbourhood,” Mrs Jenkins said. In Selwyn, each group has street or road co-ordinators who are responsible for organising their group and reporting back to a locally based Community Response Team. Lincoln Resident Paul Wright is part of the Lincoln Community Response Team. Mr Wright said their role is to coordinate the local response in an emergency, and communicate key messages from the Selwyn District Council’s emergency operations centre to the community. “To get our communities ready, each community response team organises a letter and questionnaire to be delivered to every household where residents are invited to provide their contact details,
and also any special skills, needs and resources they have which may be useful in an emergency,” Mr Wright said. “Once this information is gathered it is securely stored in the online Selwyn Gets Ready database where it can be easily updated. The database does other clever things like map where resources can be found, print neighbourhood contact lists so people can contact each other and send emails and text messages.” Together, the support groups and response teams help people in their area in times of need, such as prolonged power outages or civil defence emergencies including fire, flood, storm and earthquake. “Communities are best placed to provide an immediate response to emergencies as they can assess and respond to local issues quickly and they know their community, including who may need assistance,” Mr Wright said. “Once they have made this assessment they can then advise council if they need additional support or resources.” Mrs Jenkins said the system is very helpful to the Council as in times of emergencies, there are many additional demands on staff to ensure

essential services like roads and water keeps operating. “During the wind storms last year the system proved successful with
neighbours checking on each other and messages getting through, despite no power, telephones or cell phones at times.” she says.

Prebbleton park opens Plunket warns of winter dangers The new Prebbleton Community Park has opened its spaces to the public.
With the cold winter weather setting in, Plunket is reminding Selwyn families to be alert to the dangers from heaters, fireplaces and other sources of winter warmth.
The Prebbleton Community Park has something for everyone according to the Selwyn District Council
The park was developed by the Selwyn District Council at a cost of $300,000. Council’s landscape architect Derek Hayes said now construction and landscaping for the park was complete, it is ready for everyone to enjoy. “It’s fantastic for the community to have a central place to come where they can get some fresh air and stretch their legs,” he said. “There have already been a number of people using the park over the last few days which is great to see.” The park on Stationmasters Way in
Prebbleton has a range of areas to suit all age groups including a playground with swings, a large train and a 7.5 metre climbing net. There is also a skate and scooter area, as well as a walking and cycling track. “It will be a place where the kids can come to play as there is a variety of playground equipment including a rotating tire swing called the Rocktopus, and a covered area for winter which also provides shade in the warmer months,” Mr Hayes said. An official opening will be held in Spring.

Competitors from around New Zealand converged on Lincoln University for the 46th ANZ Young Farmer grand final over the weekend. The seven regional finalists were David Kidd of Northern, Reuben Carter of Tasman, Dean Rabbidge of Otago/Southland, Dwayne Cowin of Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Sully Alsop of East Coast, Brad Lewis of Taranaki/Manawatu and James Davidson of Aorangi. Kidd took out the title with Carter second and Rabbidge third. Running alongside the main competition were competitions for school-
aged young farmers in the AgriKidsNZ and TeenAg competitions. The AgriKidsNZ competed in such events as first aid, identifying sheep breeds and putting an irrigator together, while TeenAg competitors had to label meat cuts, manage hazards at a fuel site, identify animals by their feet, install a sprinkler and classify parts of rumen anatomy.

Depression support on the land by Kelly M. Phillips
The stress, strain and uncertainty of farming can take its toll on the mental well being of a farmer. Getting farmers to talk about their stress levels and look for help when they feel depressed is the goal of the Farmer Mental Wellness Strategy and Action Plan. The plan is a combined effort of organisations such as DairyNZ and the Ministry for Primary Industries. They support the group through a jointly funded project that aims to improve dairy farmer wellbeing, which is part of the Transforming the Dairy Value Chain Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) programme. The group is currently chaired by Dairy Women’s Network project manager for dairy farmer wellbeing, Lynda Clark, who said combining the strengths of all the organisations achieves more for farmers and their families. “The joint aim is to make it easier for farmers to talk about and adopt behaviours that increase mental well being and reduce anxiety, depression and suicide,” she said. “Group members are keeping each other informed and taking opportunities to work together where possible, rather than working in silos.” The group has focused on providing mental health seminars, recruiting rural general practitioners and setting up Health Pit Stops to assess farmers
mental health and wellness. A 2012 Ag Research wellness study found the main causes of depression in farmers to be workload, relationship stress, financial debt and poor health. Educating farmers about the signs and symptoms of depression is also the focus of the Ministry of Health’s National Depression Initiative which is explained on the website www.depression.org.nz/ rural. The site offers a free helpline and testimonials from New Zealand farmers who have struggled with depression. Former rugby star Sir John Kirwan became the face of the campaign when he went public about his own struggles with depression. In an interview posted on the website, Ashburton farmer Matt (surname withheld for privacy) explained how depression affected his life. “It all started when I was a young fella about 15 or so, I lost a good mate to cancer and I didn’t realise it at the time but I was starting a downward trend then,” he said. He described feeling overwhelmed during the harvest season and said he kept his feelings inside instead of talking to someone. He credited a cousin with convincing him to seek professional help and said he is now able to enjoy

everyday life. Waikato sharemilker Lisa Lile said mental health was a taboo subject among farmers. When she noticed her husband Hamish was in a slump she began looking for assistance. “When we were asking for help, we got doors slammed in our faces,” she said.
She said farming communities need a better understanding of mental well being and there needs to be more help available from specialists who can relate well to farmers. “Dairy farmers need to know they can ask for help to deal with stress and depression,” she said.

Synlait leading environment planning by Kent Caddick
Environment Canterbury has approved the first farm environment plan template under the proposed Land and Water Regional Plan and it’s thanks to a Selwyn company. The template was developed by Selwyn diary giant Synlait Milk as part of its ‘Lead With Pride’ certification programme focussing on dairy farming best practice and sustainability. To become accredited, suppliers are independently audited by AsureQuality and need to demonstrate top performance in activities covering milk quality, animal health and welfare, social responsibility and environmental management. ECan chief executive Bill Bayfield said Synlait Milk had met all the requirements of Schedule 7 of the proposed Land and Water Regional Plan in developing the template. “We hope the farm environment plans that come from this template are valuable both for farmers and for Synlait,” Mr Bayfield said. “The plan is a primary delivery mechanism of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy. “It is therefore reassuring to see in this template
a methodology that will enable development of plans identifying actual and potential environmental effects and risks to properties, addresses those effects and risks, and has a high likelihood of appropriately avoiding, remedying or mitigating them.” Synlait managing director John Penno said he is delighted that the farm environment plan within Lead With Pride has been recognised as meeting the standard set by Environment Canterbury. “It means suppliers working within our programme are now able to cover off their responsibilities under the proposed Land and Water Regional Plan as well as meet our standards for best practice leadership in food safety and sustainability in a one-stop-shop system,” Dr Penno said. “It comes at no charge to them and they receive a financial reward once they become certified.” Under the proposed Land and Water Regional Plan, a farm environment
plan will need to be produced in any circumstances where an application for consent to farm is required. Mr Bayfield said there are several situations where a consent will be required at different times in future, depending on how at risk water quality is in the zone where the property is located. “Irrespective of the rules, we encourage all farmers to prepare farm environment plans. They will help identify environmental and business risks and planning for their management. International markets are increasingly demanding proven sustainability, and farm environment plans are one way to demonstrate this.” Under Schedule 7 of the proposed Land and Water Regional Plan, farm environment plans can be prepared either by landowners themselves or via industry-prepared templates and guidance material. Minimum content is specified, and all farm environment plans must include an assessment of the adverse environmental effects and risks associated with the farming activities and how those effects and risks will be

ECan rates rise National title goes Selwyn ratepayers will be facing a 4.95% rise in Environment Canterbury rates. According to ECan’s commissioner s the increase funds some new activities, but also reflects a shift from user pays to general rates funding associated with water science and consent administration charges. Commissioner David Bedford said this was consistent with the council’s wish to have its revenue policy supportive of the collaborative ECan Commissioner Canterbur y Wa t e r David Bedford Management Strategy. “We have held the increase at this level despite some additional funding requirements identified since the annual plan was proposed. “All spending for the coming year has been closely scrutinised before it was included in the Annual Plan. New work like additional resources to carry out the water management strategy and further investment in health and safety practices resulted in a 1.7% increase in rates.” Mr Bedford said this combined with the impact of the change to funding water science activities, as well as funding existing and ongoing work, brings the overall increase in rates to 4.95%.

Mark and Devon Slee have won the national title in the 2014 Ballance Farm Environment Awards. The Slees were chosen from the ten regional supreme winners and their national win was announced at the New Zealand Farm Environment (NZFE) Trust’s National Sustainability Showcase in Christchurch recently. The National Sustainability Showcase celebrates the contribution agriculture makes to the New Zealand economy and highlights farmers’ efforts to find better ways to manage the complex farming systems they work with. The Gordon Stephenson Trophy for the national Ballance award was presented to the Slees by Primary Industries Minister, Nathan Guy. The trophy was named after a Waikato farmer who wanted to promote farming methods which were both profitable and environmentally sustainable. “Mark and Devon possess the outstanding communication and leadership skills necessary to spread the sustainability message to both a national and international audience,” said NZFE acting chair, Simon Saunders.

Selwyn women involved in the rural sector are being encouraged to enter this year’s Enterprising Rural Women Awards. Rural Women New Zealand national president Wendy McGowan, said this was the sixth year they’ve run the awards and they are already fielding enquiries from women keen to enter. Last year’s winner was Diane Coleman of Treeline Native Nursery in Rotorua. “Winning this award has been a once in a lifetime opportunity that was challenging, exciting, scary, fun, humbling and has really put my business on the map,” she said. There are four main categories in the competition: land-based businesses
covering animals and agriculture; businesses providing services such as retail or agricultural contractor; businesses involved in manufacturing or creativity; businesses involved in rural tourism or hospitality. To enter the awards, women have to own and operate a small business with less than 10 full-time equivalent staff and be based in a rural area. The business must have been running for at least two years. If in partnership, women must be an active partner of 50% or more in the business.

If you don’t like the dreary look of your garden throw in a few brightly coloured plants such as pansies, polyanthus and violets to cheer the place up. Put some in pots or an old wheelbarrow and you will have moveable spots of colour that you can use to dress an outdoor space. Remove the old blooms from these flowers to encourage new buds. Harvesting There’s not a lot of harvesting going on this time of year. If you have parsnips

and yams in the ground it’s best to leave them until there have been some good frosts as this will give them a lovely sweet flavour. If in boggy soil harvest them post frosts, otherwise just leave them in the soil until they are required for the kitchen. If you still have pumpkins growing harvest and store in a cool dark place. Collect any rotting fruit from your orchard and put in the compost pile. Go through your harvest stocks and remove any fruits or vegetables that are beginning to spoil. These too can be added to the compost. If you really don’t want to be bothered with the garden this time of year throw a pile of mulch on the garden beds and leave them until spring. Return inside to your gardening magazines, and your warm cup of tea. Find
