Success at prison youth unit u by Kent Caddick
Celebrating success and hope for young people was the theme of the visit by Mental Health and Addiction Inquiry panel members to the Youth Unit based at Christchurch Men’s Prison near Rolleston. P13
Planning well underway for SIAFD 2019 While it’s still almost 300 days until the next South Island Agricultural Field Days …
The Youth Unit aims to provide a supportive youth focussed environment designed to set the young offenders up to lead a crime-free life when they leave prison. Inquiry Panel members, Dean Rangihuna and Josiah Tualamali’i, visited young people at the facility to
talk with them about their successes as part of the inquiry panel’s ongoing meetings with community and other groups across Aotearoa. Recently several of the young people in the unit received their Duke of Edinburgh awards and earlier this year completed a marathon inside the prison
fence. Josiah Tualamali’i, the youth voice on the inquiry panel, said he was moved by these achievements and wanted to find out more about the successes of the young men at the unit.

The council has issued a boil water notice after test results showed that E coli levels were above recommended levels. As a precaution, the council will temporarily chlorinate the supply, which serves a population of approximately 570. A council spokesperson said residents should continue to boil water until they are notified that the boil water notice is lifted. “It is likely to be in place for several days and council will continue to monitor the intake and reticulation system
and keep residents informed of any updates. Anyone who shows symptoms of sickness should visit their doctor as soon as they are able to.” E coli is an organism, which can cause health issues. When a boil water notice is in place, the Ministry of Health advises that people should boil or treat all water from taps before drinking, brushing teeth or using it in food preparation. In addition, water used to make ice should also be boiled before freezing. Updates to this notice will be posted online at selwyn.govt.nz. ¢

Athol McCully and fellow Southern Environmental Trust Committee members, Alan McKinnon and Kim Tanner, presented Max Lichtenstein with the trust’s annual scholarship. Mr Lichtenstein is in his second year of a bachelor of environmental policy and planning degree and was delighted to receive the $1,500 award, which the trust established 10 years ago. Scholarships adviser, Sue Smart, said they couldn’t have chosen a better person. “Max has participated in a number of Lincoln University projects that aim to raise awareness of environmental issues. Last year, he was involved in a project known as Count Your Chickens, which involved providing Springston Primary School with its own chicken coop. “The idea was to educate kids about not wasting food and getting them to bring food scraps from home to feed the hens,” Mr Lichtenstein said. “Then people from the school and wider community can enjoy the eggs that the hens provide.” He is now working with a group of other students on developing a community garden for the university. “The ultimate goal would be if Lincoln
grew its own food and served it on campus, but we’re starting small with herbs that people can use in cooking,” he said. “We’d ideally like the garden to be centrally located on campus and people could work on it, as well as take produce to use at home.” The Southern Environmental Trust began in 1995 through the Rotary Club of Christchurch South. It holds annual forums to encourage education and discussion about environmental issues. ¢

Did you know that 59% of Selwyn residents have never smoked, compared to 56% of residents in the rest of New Zealand? We also have a slightly higher percentage of ex-smokers than the national average. Both of these statistics bode well for our progress as a region in becoming smoke-free by 2025. The goal of making New Zealand essentially a smoke-free nation by 2025 was put in place by the National Government in 2011. The aim of this goal is not to point the finger at smokers but to try and reduce the terrible consequences of smoking on the health of smokers and those that live with them. Lung cancer is the biggest cause of cancer death in New Zealand. Often people with the disease have few or no symptoms, and this means the cancer is not detected until it is very advanced and has spread to other parts of the body. Around 2,000 people in New Zealand each year are diagnosed with lung cancer and, of these, around 10% to 15% are non-smokers.

Vaping and electronic cigarettes can also be used to help smokers to transition from nicotine. Lincoln University was chosen as the site of one of the headline events of this year’s national Techweek, with more than 250 scientists, researchers, farmers, food growers and agricultural specialists meeting to discuss the future of agrifood in New Zealand.
p Pictured at one of the panel discussions during Blinc’s Naturetech opening seminar are from left: Steve Saunders (Robotics Plus), Frances Valintine (Tech Futures Lab), George Kellerman (Yamaha Ventures), Michal Postula (Schneider Electric)
The Naturetech one-day seminar was the first and, so far, the biggest event of its type organised by the newly-named Blinc Innovation — formerly Lincoln Hub, and Blinc chief executive, Toni Laming, says she is delighted with the response. “Naturetech became the biggest Techweek event in Canterbury and one of the largest across the national Techweek calendar, reflecting how important the topic is for our region. “Lincoln is the heart of agrifood innovation. We have one of the highest concentrations of agrifood technology and environmental scientists and researchers in the Southern Hemisphere,” Ms Laming said. “What was exciting for us at Naturetech was the wide section of people attending the event and making new connections. We had individuals
working in technology, robotics, artificial intelligence, farm systems and food development — all working toward creating a better world. “That is why we formed Blinc. Blinc becomes the mechanism to facilitate collaborative innovation among these individuals and organisations and to support these coalitions and their outcomes. “Blinc is about creating these connections and providing the opportunity to gain insights into what we need to consider.” Ms Laming says Naturetech is just the first of many events Blinc will organise throughout the year. Others include the Innovation Breakfast Seminar series. Details of these and other Blinc events can be found on the organisation’s website: blincinnovation.com. ¢

Refreshments will be provided, and people will be invited to join a short discussion after the film showing.” People can find out more on the evening by registering their interest at doco-livingthechange.eventbrite.co.nz. Waihora and Rakaia will contest this year’s Canterbury Country rugby final after wins in the semifinals over the weekend.
p William Hurst on the charge for Waihora
Waihora were pushed to the limit by Prebbleton in their semi at Tai Tapu before holding on to take a 22–15 win and earn the right to host the final this coming weekend. Prebbleton took the early lead in the match at Rhodes Domain with George Wigley slotting a penalty after three minutes. Waihora took some time to get into its work, but on the quarter hour mark, prop James Cummings crashed over for a try,
p Greg Mitchell secures the lineout ball for Prebbleton
which was converted by Harrison Kirk. Prebbleton closed the gap with another penalty before Waihora winger Kees Duyvestyn scored out wide to give his side a 12–6 lead. Another penalty to Prebbleton closed the gap to 12–9 at the halftime break. Ten minutes into the second half and Prebbleton were on level terms with Wigley slotting a penalty. The visitors then took the lead on the back of another penalty midway through the spell.
With 10 minutes left in the match, Waihora retook the lead after William Hurst plunged over for a try after a lineout drive. Kirk converted and added another penalty a few minutes later to give Waihora the lead, 22–15, which it held to full-time. In the other semifinal this year’s surprise package Springston, playing in division one for the first time, couldn’t keep the fairytale alive as it went down
to Rakaia, 16–28, in the match played in Rakaia. Springston will now meet Prebbleton in the playoff for third and fourth this Saturday, with the match to be played in Prebbleton. Meanwhile, Darfield will contest the Bowl final after a narrow 26–24 win over Lincoln and will travel to Rangiora on Saturday to meet Saracens, who upset defending champions Southbridge, 22– 21 over the weekend. ¢

The ‘boot’iful gumboot In the words of the great Kiwi legend Fred Dagg — if it weren’t for your gumboots where would you be? Gumboots have long held a special place in Kiwi’s lives. From the ones caked in mud, to the ‘good’ gumboots for wearing into town or the pub, there’s a pair for every family member and every occasion. In the early days, gumboots came up to the knees; however, in 1958 a shorter boot was created by staff at Marathon Rubber Footwear, and it wasn’t long
Mother of the Bride or Belle of the Ball
before the first pair of red bands came into existence. From then on other boot companies have recreated the gumboot and they have become as much a part of New Zealand culture as the Buzzy Bee and pavlova. After all, the capital city is named Wellington, and the town of Taihape boasts an enormous corrugated iron gumboot at the entrance of the town. An authentic gumboot is made of rubber, making them durable, longlasting and flexible; however, many people opt for the cheaper PVC versions these days for the sake of economy. It’s not just farmers who don a pair of gumboots these days either. Fishermen, politicians, firefighters, soldiers and even surgeons can be found sporting a pair. Fishermen wear them to keep their feet warm and dry, politicians wear them to seem more relatable, whilst firefighters wear them to stop their feet from frying and surgeons wear them for reasons we would rather not think about. There are gumboot dances, gumboot politics and even gumboot throwing competitions. With so many different types of gumboots on the market these days it can be hard to know where to
start. Some prefer the white gumboot, whilst others won’t buy anything other than the classic black possibly with a red band. Nowadays there are even printed ones to rival Kim Kardashian on the red carpet. Whether they are a brand that has been around since the beginning, or PVC plastic ones that last a single season, chances are if you check by the back step of any Kiwi house you’ll find at least one faithful pair, waiting like a loyal dog for the next outdoor excursion.
Sometimes in summer, when jandals are favoured over the gumboot, the boots might be delicately draped with a carefully woven spider web or home to a weta or two. So next time you see a pair of these boots parked outside your local fish and chip shop or bank, take a moment to appreciate the humble but brave gumboot, and the feet they have protected from rain, cold and all kinds of unmentionable things over the generations. ¢

A TRANSPARENT AND ENJOYABLE BUILDING EXPERIENCE When you build with Reynolds Construction you know you are dealing directly with the owner of the company who will be building your home, which director Craig Reynolds says gives clients a distinct advantage over building with some of the larger group building companies. “When you build with us you’re not dealing with a salesperson, you’re dealing with a qualified manager who will actually be doing the work. You know you’re going to get an honest answer not a sales pitch,” he says. Another advantage of building with an owner/ operator company is that the client is not paying for any large overheads. Craig says this enables Reynolds Construction to easily compete on price with the larger group building companies. “Our work comes from word of mouth and recommendations from satisfied clients,” he says Reynolds Construction has been building new homes, and renovating and extending existing homes, throughout Canterbury for more than 10 years. Craig has 30 years industry experience, completing his apprenticeship with his father here in Canterbury. He went into business for himself at the age of 20. He heads a team of qualified and experienced tradesmen, who are known for their high level of workmanship. “Plus they’re all good guys,” says Craig. “They’re approachable, friendly as well as experienced and versatile tradesmen.”
They build a full range of homes, from the more modest up to high-end architecturally-designed homes. Craig works with many of Christchurch’s leading architects and has built over 300 homes in and around the region. Reynolds Construction will price clients’ own plans. They will also arrange architectural plans to be designed and consented ready for commencement. Renovations and extensions are another speciality at Reynolds Construction. They work on homes of all description, from older character homes to modern houses, building and renovating in a style that meets the client’s requirements and is sympathetic to the style of the home. Reynolds Construction is also one of the last companies involved with the EQC repair programme having completed over 200 repairs including multi unit projects.
Clients are kept fully informed throughout the building process. Reynolds will monitor the build continuously with a range of quality control check lists as the project develops.
“Our motto is making your building experience and enjoyable one and that is what we aim to do,” - Craig Reynolds Craig and his team take great pride in their work and realize the trust that the client invests with them. “There’s nothing anonymous about Reynolds Construction.”
Craig says the variety of projects they have worked on over the years have been extensive and diverse. “It all depends on what comes in over the phone and whatever it is, we can do it.” The team have also worked on numerous education projects, building classrooms, additions and extensions for schools throughout Canterbury. Home and land packages are also available at Reynolds Construction. They will manage the build from start to completion, including the design process, which Craig says makes building a stressfree process for the client.

Robots no risk — researcher u by Mike Isle
In the first part of The Record’s two-part series, Robotics in the Workplace , we looked at how ground-breaking research undertaken by Dr Armin Werner and his Lincoln Agritech team into robotic technology will be opening new opportunities for New Zealand industry. Now, in Part Two, we seek to answer two of the more common questions regarding that technology: will it be a help or hindrance, and will robots take our jobs? Dr Armin Werner is only too well aware of the misconceptions surrounding the subject of one of his pet projects: robotics. He knows that Hollywood, in such movies as Wall-E, 2001: A Space Odyssey and even the Transformers franchise, has perpetuated the myth of omnipotent robots or even out of control robots seeking to overtake the world. He says such fears are groundless. A science fiction. Rather than robots being a threat, they will become part of the machinery we rely on and like all machines, we use these can benefit humankind, and he is determined that robots and robotic technology will take their rightful place alongside humans, not only in the workplace. Dr Werner is Lincoln Agritech’s group manager in precision agriculture. Based at Lincoln University, just outside of Rolleston, Dr Werner and his team are taking part in Robotic Spearhead, a $2 million project funded by the Science for Technological Innovation (SfTI), a government paid programme. He and his project partners focus on developing robots to work in small-scale manufacturing industries and unforgiving outdoor environments. Forestry is an example of the latter, and Dr Werner sees robotics playing an increasing role in one of New Zealand’s foremost primary industries but also in the thriving high-tech industries. “Robots can assist with complex tasks such as pruning trees, felling trees on steep slopes and even assembling and ‘instructing’ other machinery to do
the job swiftly, effectively and safely.” However, forestry is not the only area in which robotics can play a role in the workforce. Nor is safety the only benefit. “For me, it is easy to accept that robots will have a place in highly repetitive, monotonous and hard and dangerous work. “In many industries that work is already undertaken by machinery, and it may well be that robotics will have an increasing role in ‘managing’ that machinery. “The standard definition of a robot in contrast to the automated process of a machine is that the robot has some form of autonomy. A robot should not need to be constantly supervised. But, it can help supervise other machinery.” However, Dr Werner is at pains to point out that robots supervising other machinery is a far cry from them taking over from humans in the workplace. “As far as we can see, the typical workforce of most industries is not at risk from robots at the moment.” Dr Werner says it is difficult to predict the eventual ratio of human staff to robots. Moreover, he can point to current statistics that offer a credible insight into the future. “Specialists expect 1.7 million industrial robots globally by 2020. That figure does not really impress me, considering that we have about one to two billion skilled people in the global workforce. “The employees to robot ratio in the manufacturing industries of highly-
developed countries is around 10,000 to 80. So, even if the robot population increases by 70% over the next few years, the ratio of humans to robots would still be large: 10,000 to 135. “I do not see this as a serious risk for the major workforce for the foreseeable future. Some of my colleagues predict that serious changes, including a complete overhaul of our work types, will take us into a journey over the next 100 years. “We should not worry about losing some of our jobs to robots. In fact, we will likely create new jobs that need p Dr Armin Werner to build, manage, and maintain the robots and train new people on how to david stevenson contracting use them.” If Dr Werner and his colleagues and • Deer/Sheep Fencing researchers are right, it is unlikely that • Stockyards • Post Driving • Post & Rail any of us will be sharing our workspace • Residential • Subdivisions with Wall-E any time soon. ¢ • Dairy Conversions • Maintenance

Planning well underway for SIAFD 2019 While it’s still almost 300 days until the next South Island Agricultural Field Days, organisers are already at work preparing to host the event in Kirwee next year. Exhibitors are now able to register online to reserve a site for the 2019 South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) to be held at the organisation’s permanent venue on Courtenay Road, Kirwee, from Wednesday, March 27 to Friday, March 29. This year the SIAFD organising committee has a new secretary and events coordinator, Tineka Johnstone. Originally from Hawarden and then Methven, Ms Johnstone is well-known to many in Canterbury’s farming community through her work with the Red Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP) and NZ Young Farmers. She said an online application form is now available on the SIAFD website, along with a prospectus that provides all the information exhibitors need to know regarding how the field days will be run, payment, advertising options and award competitions. “We want potential exhibitors to start thinking about their options and register early,” Ms Johnstone said. “We are upgrading the website, so at present, it looks a bit barebones, but the all necessary information is there. The new-look website will be up and running by the end of June.” Ms Johnstone said SIAFD is wellknown for its machinery demonstrations and this will again be a major attraction.
Exhibitors are encouraged to put their latest machines through their paces. “Normally the chair of the SIAFD changes for each field days, but because I am new to the role of secretary, Rodney Hadfield has stayed on for another term. “Michaela McLeod will serve as vice chair, and Andrew p Heading up efforts to organise South Island Agricultural Field Days 2019 are (from left) Rodney Hadfield, Tineka Stewart will be in charge of Johnstone, and Michaela McLeod organising the crops that will be used in the machinery demonstrations.” make better decisions, operate their SIAFD media liaison person, Daniel businesses more efficiently, and Schat, said a number of working bees communicate with their advisers have already been held to prepare the and suppliers. field days site for next year.
