Lincoln University alumni Steve Smith, who was born in Invercargill and raised in Ashburton, has taken over the role of Chancellor from Tony Hall, who was recently named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Mr Smith paid tribute to his predecessor Mr Hall and Vice-Chancellor Robin Pollard for their guidance of the university through a challenging period of change, which he said had primed Lincoln University for a strong period of growth and academic excellence. He said he is looking forward to working alongside Vice-Chancellor Robin Pollard to continue the recent fiscal discipline and accountability at the university. “This is an exciting time for Lincoln University and a lot of work has been completed to get us to a position of fiscal stability, as is evident in our FY16 Annual Results,” Mr Smith said. “Lincoln has a great opportunity to become a global academic thought leader in charting the future and solving real-world challenges around land, food and ecosystems. “Lincoln University can also be at the forefront of a significant change in

Schools are central to community

Blood donors wanted Rolleston residents are being urged to help others by donating blood when the New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) visits this week.

u by Sam Broughton, Selwyn Mayor

Schools are at the heart of many memories we all have of growing up. They are the places we make friends, learn how to win or lose graciously, are taught a curriculum and learn about how our mind ticks and how we relate to the world around us. They are also at the centre of a community and are a space for parents to connect, sports to grow, and have facilities that are often used outside of school hours. Some of our schools have only just opened while others have been educating young people for generations over 150 years. During the next two months I am visiting each school in Selwyn to meet with staff and students to learn about their activities and to talk about civics and leadership. Each school has their own way of developing leadership and it has been great to see this in action at the schools I have visited so far. A couple

of key messages I am sharing are that opportunities come to us because of the work of others before us, and that it’s important to think about how our actions and influence affects others. It has also been good to share the work that the council does around roading, water and parks that make it easy for individuals and families to do the things they love and enjoy day to day. The visits are also a chance to listen to the ideas and concerns that schools have about our communities, road safety, footpaths and roading improvements. I look forward to the future visits and want to say thank you to all the principals and school communities for their welcome and hospitality, as well as their ongoing commitment to providing great spaces for learning in Selwyn. ¢

The NZBS is holding a blood drive on Thursday in the Rolleston Community Centre between 2.30pm and 7pm. NZBS donor recruiter Jules Askin said this week marks World Blood Donor Day and is hoping for a good turnout in Rolleston to boost their blood supplies. “Their commitment and generosity ensures every single one of us has access to a safe and certain blood supply,” she said. “Nationally the blood

service loses around 25,000 donors each year, which need to be constantly replaced so that we can continue to meet health service demands. “The blood we collect and process is used to help more than 29,000 New Zealanders each year, from cancer patients, to trauma victims, to new mums and babies.” She said they prefer people to book an appointment by going to nzblood.co.nz. ¢

Pest management in Selwyn Protection for Flock Hill Environment Canterbury is calling for public submissions on a proposal to progress the development of a new Canterbury Regional Pest Management Plan.

A postcard inviting submissions is being delivered to mailboxes throughout Selwyn this week. Environment Canterbury councillor Peter Skelton said animals and plants declared as pests can threaten the natural environment and livelihoods. “We need to make sure the right rules are in place to manage existing pests and new pests,” Professor Skelton said. “We all want to protect biodiversity and production activities from the impact of pests, be able to better respond to pests as soon as they get here, and be

better equipped to respond to changes in climate and land use, new tourism opportunities, changes in freshwater habitats and water movement.” He said everyone has a part to play in reducing the impact of pests. “They can affect both rural and urban areas. Without good management they can spread. By working together, we can protect Canterbury’s unique natural environment. “The submissions we receive on this proposal will help us decide how best to get there.” Submissions close on July 3. ¢

Sixty-eight hectares of Selwyn land will now be protected for future generations thanks to funding from the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee.

p Members of the Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee on a visit to Flock Hill Station earlier this year

The zone committee has allocated $26,571 towards a protection project at Selwyn’s iconic Flock Hill Station. The project involves erecting a 3.8km fence to protect 68ha of land, including a 35ha wetland, from stock. The landowners will contribute $13,524 toward the project. Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee chair Allen Lim said he was very excited by the zone committee’s decision. “Sixty-eight hectares is nearly half the size of Hagley Park so it’s not an insignificant amount of land and it’s

actually very generous of the farmers to give it up,” Mr Lim said. While the final project differed from the 120ha originally proposed, Mr Lim said it still contained the areas of cultural and environmental significance the zone committee wanted to protect. “It’s a big bit of land that contains a lot of rare species of plant and fish and I want to be able to look back and be able to tell my children and grandchildren that we had the chance to protect this and we did.” ¢

Southbridge secures title u by Kent Caddick

Southbridge are Canterbury Country rugby champions again after a thrilling win over Rakaia in the competition’s finale on Sunday. Beaten by fellow Ellesmere club side Waihora in last year’s final, Southbridge pulled off a come-from-behind 13-12 win to secure the title in perfect conditions at the Rakaia Domain on Sunday. The home side scored the only try of the first half and lead Southbridge 7-0 at the half-time break. Ill-discipline cost Rakaia early in the second spell when it allowed Southbridge back into the match with a try while two

Rakaia players were cooling their heels in the sin bin. However, once the Mid Canterbury side had its full complement of players back on the field, it extended its lead to 12-5 with an unconverted try. Southbridge closed the gap to two points with an unconverted try of its own and, with a couple of minutes left on the clock, Southbridge captain Shannon Donald stepped up to slot a match winning penalty from 30m out. ¢

Insulating windows for a comfortable environment u Article supplied by consumer.co.nz

We can cover all aspects of tree maintenance and removals.

Better window insulation can make your home comfier all year round and there are a variety of ways to achieve this.

• Based in & servicing the Selwyn region for five years

Touch a windowpane on a cold day and it’ll feel cold. It’s likely to be as cold as the outside air. When the warm (inside) air hits the windowpane, it cools and the heat escapes outside. There are two ways of dealing with this: using curtains to keep the warm inside air away from the windows or improving the heat loss from the windows through some form of double glazing. For new homes the building code now lays down minimum requirements for new windows — that’s almost certain to mean double glazing. In existing houses make sure you’ve blocked draughts — and that you’ve insulated your ceilings, under the floor and maybe the walls too. Once you’ve done this, the windows will be the cause of most heat loss in winter and gain in summer. How much is lost (or gained) depends on where you live, the type of windows you have, how big they are, and the direction they face. Fitting double-glazed or secondaryglazed windows is likely to improve winter and summer comfort and also reduce noise. It may also add to the

• 10yrs experience

house’s resale value. But it’ll take many years to pay for itself through reduced heating (or cooling) bills. New double-glazed windows are effective. But research has shown that secondary glazing of existing windows can be just as effective and cheaper — sometimes a lot cheaper. But before you look at glazing options, you should get your curtains working as well as possible. A good set of curtains can be as effective as double glazing at reducing heat loss from windows. But if the curtain is open it’s not doing anything — a layer of air must be trapped between the window and curtain. What’s more, curtains with a gap at the top and the bottom can form a ‘reverse chimney’. That’s when the cooled air from near the window falls out the bottom of the curtains and is replaced at the top by warm air from inside. This could be worse than having no curtain. Although they’re no longer fashionable, pelmets help seal curtain tops. Sealing at the bottom can be improved by curtains that fall on to the

window sills or touch the floor. Thermal curtains have a plasticised coating on the reverse of the cloth. The coating helps stop air passing through the cloth — but that’s not the major cause of heat loss with curtains. The fitting of the curtains matters much more than the cloth. ¢

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

Quick guide to buying a healthy home u by Christian Hoerning, EECA senior advisor

Homes look more appealing in warm sunshine but put some thought into how houses will perform in the cold depths of winter before you buy, as a house that is hard to heat can make you sick and miserable. North facing Ideally a house should be north facing to get winter sun. Rooms with unshaded windows on the north-facing side of the house get more heat and light from the sun, making them warmer and more pleasant to live in during the cooler months. Remember that the sun’s position is lower in winter, so objects cast longer shadows. Be aware that buildings or trees may block sun during the colder months. Insulation The house will be very hard to heat if it doesn’t have adequate ceiling and underfloor insulation. If there’s an accessible roof and subfloor space it’s fairly straightforward to check if a home has adequate ceiling and underfloor insulation. Pop your head through the hatch into your roof space — you will need to replace or top up the insulation if the insulation: • is less than 12cm thick (ie should be thicker than the height of the ceiling joists)

• doesn’t cover the whole ceiling • has gaps or places where it is squashed or tucked in You need to remove the old insulation and start again if it is wet or damp in areas or has been damaged by rodents or birds. Try to check under the house for underfloor insulation — it may need upgrading if it is loose, ripped or doesn’t extend under the whole floor. If the house does not have insulation, budget about $4,000 to install insulation for a 100-square-metre house. If the house does not have an accessible roof space, installing ceiling insulation will mean removing the roofing or ceiling lining which adds substantial costs. Similarly, if the house has a suspended floor that is too close to the ground to access, retrofitting underfloor insulation may not be possible. If you are buying a property as an investment, tenants are more likely to stay long-term in homes that are warm, dry and easier to heat. Wall insulation and double glazing are a real bonus

NEED A BUILDER? On scope, on time, on budget everytime!

CALL BREWSTER BUILDING NOW! We do it once & do it right On time everytime Stress free - we manage everything

to look for. Wall insulation is common in houses built after 1978. In older houses retrofitting wall insulation usually requires removal of the wall linings or cladding. Get a registered building surveyor to check if the house has wall insulation as part of a prepurchase inspection. Damp Damp houses are unhealthy houses. Musty smells, mould or water stains on walls, ceilings or under carpets and dampness under the house are all signs there may be a problem. Some of these issues may be easy to fix but before buying, it’s worth getting the house inspected by a registered building surveyor for hidden moisture content. Look for extractor fans (externally vented) in kitchens and bathrooms, which are important for managing indoor moisture effectively. Heating Energy efficient heating, sized properly for the area you are heating, is a real bonus. Clean effective forms of heating include some heat pumps, modern wood or wood pellet burners and flued gas heaters. Westland Milk Products has appointed Chinese national Gary Yu to lead its Shanghai-based team in China. Westland Milk’s chief executive Toni Brendish said Mr Yu will champion the drive by New Zealand’s second biggest dairy co-operative to strengthen its dairybased nutritionals market in China and gain a larger share of the burgeoning Chinese foodservice market. “Westland has a strong foothold in China with its nutritional products, including infant formula,” Ms Brendish said. “Gary has extensive on-the-ground experience of key account management, marketing and supply logistics and forming innovative partnerships with Chinese commercial customers. “This will be invaluable for Westland to make sure our nutritionals foundation remains strong and opportunities for its expansion are realised.” Ms Brendish said Westland will also be able to take advantage of Yu’s experience in the foodservice industry in China. “China’s bakery industry has developed rapidly in recent years, with growing per capita consumption levels of baked goods. “Gary has grassroots experience of the demands of local consumers. The countdown is on for young farmers u by Nadine Porter

In three weeks, New Zealand will have a new FMG Young Farmer of the Year and for the first time in the 49-year-history of the contest it could well be a female from the city taking the title home. Held in the Manawatu from July 6 to 8, this year’s contest is set to be one of the most fiercely contested in modern times with seven equally talented individuals putting their all on the line to win the country’s most prestigious agricultural competition. Among them will be 24-year-old Karaka townie Lisa Kendall who is among the hot favourites to take the title. The urban lass who grew up on a lifestyle block has had a sensational year after convincingly beating out experienced opposition at

the Northern Regional Final in all facets of the contest. In only her first year of competing she is now facing the real possibility of taking home the title. However, there are six equally determined Kiwis from around the country studying hard in the lead-up to the event to put their region on the map. Included in that is another hot favourite, Hamish Best, from the East Coast of the North Island. The 27-year-old has all skills on paper to create a massive headache for his peers should everything fall into place. The PGG Wrightson technical representative also has leadership acumen and will show that in the heat of battle. However, he faces an added expectation with East Coast winning every decade that ends with a seven since 1987. Best friend and former flattie, Richard French, from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty will also be tough opposition having worked as a banker before coming back to farming. The 27-year-old will prove a handful having experienced top-level sport as a hockey representative for the Under-21 Central Districts hockey team. In an unusual twist this year, Taranaki/ Manawatu representative James Lawn will compete alongside friends and former flatties Richard French and Hamish Best.

The dairy farmer has broad experience to back him up after travelling extensively throughout the world. He will also have an undoubted advantage with the Grand Final being hosted by the Manawatu — but will have to push all friendships aside to do it. The most experienced contestant this year is Andrew Wiffen who will represent the Tasman region. The West Coast dairy farmer has competed in many regional finals and will be the most comfortable new entrant to grand final level. At 29 years old, he is also the veteran contestant, and will bring all that richness of knowledge to the fore. Aorangi’s Arjan Van’t Klooster is expected to be in the top three come the end of the grand final, which is not surprising, given the region’s extraordinary strong record in recent years, having had Athol New and Matt Bell record back-to-back wins. A highly driven entrepreneur and innovative dairy farmer, Arjan is focussed on doing it once and doing it right. Rounding out the magnificent seven is Otago/Southland’s Nigel Woodhead. Hailing from Milton in South Otago, the sheep and beef farmer also has extensive arable experience and could be the pride of his province should he be the first from his province to bring the trophy home since 1982. ¢

Farming

Cattle conditioning a winter challenge u by Dr Clive Dalton

The main challenge during winter is to get cows in good condition for calving and any skinny pregnant cows as a result of the drought need extra feed, as if they calve when emaciated, there will be ongoing problems in spring. They’ll be slow to cycle and get in calf again early, and having cows calving at Christmas can be very inconvenient. Cows should calve at Condition Score 5, which is when they have rounded hips. A thin cow will need good quality supplements during winter to replace lost body condition. It takes 180kg of DM to replace one condition score, and that’s on top of basic maintenance of the cow, so that’s a lot of feed to provide in supplements, and it takes at least a month to see its effect. Young stock need to keep growing all the time, but in winter if feed is short, all you may achieve is to stop them losing weight. If they stop growing, it takes a lot of extra feed and time to catch up and reach their target weights for mating in October. In this state, young stock may be prone to internal parasites, but before you dive in with drench assuming they have worms, consult your vet about the actual cause. If it is worms then it’s essential to use the correct drench to avoid drench resistance, which is building up in cattle with such frequent use of pour-ons. Mature cows should not need drenching. Lice are a regular winter problem, so again consult your vet about which product to use and the withholding times for meat and milk. There are more than 40 products on the market and cattle lice too are becoming resistant to chemicals. Check with your veterinarian about getting blood profiles done on any stock not thriving, and take their advice on what action to take. Building up mineral reserves in the liver takes time – it’s like charging up a battery. If you do send any stock to the works, it’s a good idea to get some livers tested for minerals from the works through your vet. The liver test is better than a blood test as it shows what minerals are in the store to draw on and not just circulating around the

body. Facial eczema should have gone, but watch for long-term effects on any affected stock. Long-term zinc treatment can strip the copper reserves from the liver, so copper supplementation may be recommended (check with your vet). Also the liver may have been damaged by the toxins, which can result in milk fever at calving. Abortions in winter are always a worry as often the aborted foetus is very small and can be hard to find – the dog may find it for you. Even when you send the foetus for lab testing, it’s rare to get a positive diagnosis. Talk to your vet as soon as you have trouble, as you never know if it’s a one-off or the start of an abortion storm. Only winter bulls on the property that you want to use next year. Any surplus bulls are a hazard and also eat feed that would be better used by productive females. Never put bulls out on the road verge to graze. Don’t be tempted to buy calves to rear that are born in June. It’s far too early as you’ll run into pasture shortage problems after weaning at 8 weeks old and you’ll have to keep them inside on meal too long to make a profit, especially

if the weather is bad. If you are going to rear dairy beef calves in spring, do your homework now to find a dairy farmer who will be willing to supply them in late July or August, which is early enough to start. Buying direct from the farm avoids

the risks of disease from saleyards, and the calves have minimal stress moving from their farm to yours. If you pay a little bit above the going rate, the farmer will make sure you get a good deal and will offer good advice and support. ¢
