What’s in a name? It’s a question posed famously by Shakespeare …

Live your best life now and for the future — that was the challenge issued to the Burnham Military Camp community by nearly 50 stallholders at the inaugural Living Wise Living Well Expo last month. Nearly 30 external agencies participated, and for some, it was the first time they’d had the opportunity to visit the camp and engage in person with personnel. Veteran’s Affairs and the RSA were popular stops, alongside Families of our

Fallen where people spent time hearing the stories of those who had passed. A mouth painting display by Invictus athlete Grant Philip was also a highlight, with a selection of art on display from the inaugural NZ Army Art in Recovery exhibition held at Burnham late last

year. Defence community facilitator at Burnham, Ms Kathryn Hodgkinson, was thrilled to see a broad mix of people coming through the door and engaging with each of the stalls. continued on page 3 …

Yoga is practised by more than 400,000 Kiwis at more than 500 yoga studios and classes around New Zealand, making it one of the fastest growing physical activities in the country. International Yoga Day has been celebrated on June 21 every year since 2015 after it was declared by the United Nations General Assembly. Yoga NZ chair Heather Robinson said yoga could decrease stress, anxiety and help with depression. “Yoga is known for its ability to ease stress and promote relaxation. Studies have proved the effect of yoga on stress.” Selwyn yoga exponent and teacher Annie Cook who conducts classes at Breath of Yoga in Rolleston said yoga is a great art to practice with and has numerous benefits for people of all ages. “You see people leaving a yoga session relaxed and with renewed energy. Yoga can also help restore energy and enable people to connect with themselves — to find their own space,” she said.

 Annie Cook: “Yoga has numerous benefits …”

Cook said she had children as young as 10 attending her classes, and she knew of one Canterbury woman who was still attending yoga classes at the age of 100. Annie Cook recommends anybody wanting to try yoga should attend her Tuesday morning Gentle Yoga classes, though other classes would also be suitable. 

Go Further

Aboriginal artist Nyunmiti Burton heard of the attack against Muslim worshippers in Christchurch mosques and wanted to show her sadness and grief. “For us when we lose someone, we go to the families, and we go to the communities, and we grieve, and we grieve, and we grieve,” Burton said. In Amata, a remote Aboriginal community, she and other female artists gathered to talk about Christchurch and paint. What came of that is two large canvasses that depict the sorrow of a people separated by sea and culture,

but united in humanity. One of the canvasses has now been gifted to Christchurch’s Muslim community. Christchurch’s mayor Lianne Dalziel said Christchurch had been “overwhelmed” by the generosity of people around the world. “As a city, we’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of people all around the world. “This particular contribution, which involves the Muslim community of our sister city, Adelaide, and the other for Christchurch’s Muslim community, is special,” she said. 

“I was surprised that a couple of times throughout the day it was actually hard to move through the aisles due to the volume of people – a great problem to have for our first expo!” Having only started in her role in October, Ms Hodgkinson’s initial priority was Christmas event planning, but her vision for the expo had been growing since day one. “It was amazing to see the event finally come to fruition, and I’m grateful for the support of so many people around the camp and also the wider NZDF organisation to help bring it to life. The building was badly damaged in an arson attack in June 2016, just as the Christchurch City Council was preparing to fix the damage the building had suffered in the earthquakes. The fire ripped through the roof and top storey of the heritage listed building and caused so much damage that part of the upstairs had to be deconstructed. However, a council-led repair and restoration project, which began in February 2018, has returned the historic homestead to its former glory and brought the building up to 67 per cent of the New Building Standard. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the Risingholme Community Centre had played an important role in the local community for decades. “It is a building that has seen a lot of history, and the careful restoration work that’s been carried out here means it will continue to stand strong and be a vital part of its community well into the future,” Dalziel said. The council’s social, community development and housing committee chair Phil Clearwater said the “respectful restoration” means that wherever possible, the original character features of the homestead have been retained. “For example, the beautiful marble fireplaces have been rebuilt using salvaged pieces, the charring on the

staircase and fireplace bannisters and fireplace mantle have been kept and a ‘truth window’ provides a viewing panel that reveals the original lathe and plaster inside the walls.” The nearby Risingholme Hall, which dates back to the 1940s, has also been refurbished and strengthened. Ildica Boyd, Risingholme Community Centre Committee president, said the council’s commitment to what Risingholme represents has been “heart warming”. “It is wonderful to be able to say ‘Risingholme’ is moving back home, with all the buildings open and improved,” she said. 

A council spokesperson said roads were laid out when Coalgate was first planned but was not properly transferred to the Crown.  The Nature Heritage Fund purchases land to protect vulnerable ecosystems

The Nature Heritage Fund purchases private land with indigenous ecosystems with a view to protecting those systems. The funding committee, which sits twice a year, assesses which properties fulfil the purchase criteria and makes recommendations to the minister. The fund’s scope includes all indigenous terrestrial ecosystems that in their local or national context are considered important ecologically. It includes indigenous forests, wetlands, tussock lands and coastal ecosystems on private land. There are several such properties in Selwyn. The executive director of the fund Rick McGovern-Wilson said the fund had six committee members, each serving on the committee for three years. There are currently two vacancies. McGovern-Wilson said serving on the committee would suit somebody with a love and deep appreciation of the land. He said the minister is seeking nominations for people who collectively have knowledge and experience relating to land tenure, knowledge of landscape planning and land systems, biodiversity and geodiversity, land management, funding mechanisms and sources, farming generally, forestry, kaitiakitanga

and nature conservation. Written nominations can be made by any person or organisation. Information and nomination forms can be obtained at nhf.govt.nz, from any Department of Conservation Office or from Rick McGovern-Wilson via email rmcgovern@ doc.govt.nz or phone 027 200 5716. Closing date for nominations is Monday, July 8 2019 at 5pm. 

It shows progress on the two interchanges at Weedons Road and Shands Road, now gearing up to take traffic over both bridges. A NZ Transport Agency spokesperson said excavation in the middle of the old Main South Road for the Robinsons Road Overpass is progressing well along with the construction of the new southbound SH1 lanes. The temporary road at Waterholes Road has been removed. Blakes Road has now become two formed cul-de-

sacs as the alignment cuts through to continue heading east towards Shands Road. At the Halswell Junction Road end of the project, the bridge looks in solid form with embankments beginning to be landscaped and kerbing occupying the majority of the south approach. The project has been estimated to cost $195 million and is expected to be completed in 2020. The latest drone footage, filmed this month, is on YouTube. 

Thank you for helping your community

Fall Zones

Notice and Growth limit zones

To all of you who have had your trees trimmed before they became a problem, thank you for keeping all the farms working and families in your community warm, happy and healthy. You can be proud of the fact that you kept the local cowsheds milking, water pumps pumping and sheep shearers shearing. You may not think that what you’ve done has had much impact on your neighbours, but from all of us here at Orion, we just want to say thank you. We’re not exaggerating.

Where do I start?

On our network, 10-20% of all unplanned power outages are caused by trees — including vegetation — coming into contact with power lines. Other than this, fire damage to property from branches sparking in dry conditions and serious injury from electrocution from contact with trees touching power lines are also possible consequences of not maintaining your trees.

Before you begin, remember to keep yourself, and those around you, safe. We recognise that not everyone is experienced in tree trimming and are happy to advise you on what to do. We can arrange for trees near power lines to be trimmed at your expense, however we recommend you hire professionals to safely carry out the work.

How close is too close? While most damage is caused by trees falling on power lines, significant risk exists from trees merely touching them. This risk increases the higher the voltage of the power line. The minimum distances that must be maintained between trees and power lines, as defined in the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, are outlined in the diagrams above. All vegetation should be kept out of the growth limit zone and preferably the notice zone. Sometimes it may not be practical to have a tree trimmed at the rate at which it grows and unfortunately, this means it may need to be removed. Other situations may require trees to be removed, most commonly when they are at a high risk of falling due to disease or adverse weather events.

If you or someone working for you intends to work within four metres of power lines, a close approach consent is required from Orion before you start. As a tree owner, you may be liable for any damage caused by carrying out trimming or felling of trees.

Will I be fined if I don’t comply? If a cut or trim notice is given to you and you fail to have the tree trimmed and/or advise us of the time and location of the trim without a reasonable excuse, this is an offence. This will make you liable for a fine not exceeding $10,000. If the offence continues, you will be liable for a further fine of not more than $500 for every day or part day during which the offence continues.

ROLLESTON

Quietly revolutionary  by Andy Bryenton

What’s in a name? It’s a question posed famously by Shakespeare, and one which we often ponder when encountering people who have a surname matching their job, such as bakers called Baker and keen anglers with the name of Fisher. How does this phenomenon (nominative determinism, it’s called, by those with large dictionaries), affect whole towns and municipalities? However, can the spirit of a town’s namesake really affect its character, more than 100 years later? Perhaps this is the case with Rolleston, which carries the name of a quietly revolutionary political thinker, who stood up for fairness during his career and refused to be knocked back by setbacks. Is it a coincidence that Selwyn’s ruling seat and home to the youngest mayor in Kiwi history (Sam Broughton claimed the honour back in 2016) has the moniker of one of the architects of women’s right to vote and a man who left behind a solid career in England simply to reject ‘conservatives and ecclesiastics’? William Rolleston didn’t suffer injustice gladly, and so he was a voice for giving women the vote when most of the world thought such an idea laughable or morally wrong.

 The town’s namesake, William Rolleston, immortalised in stone as one of the leading figures in Canterbury politics

When he, as Minister of Native Affairs in 1881, heard of the government’s intentions to force the peaceful protestors under Te Whiti from their land at Parihaka by armed force, he resigned in protest. Exonerated, he was the unanimously acclaimed leader of the opposition in 1891.

For all your accounting needs.

The town, which bears Rolleston’s name is quietly revolutionary in its own way, though that quiet has, of recent years, been replaced by the clamour and industry of new building. Once gently poked fun at for the large hoardings proclaiming Rolleston the town of the future, this place has become exactly that. Currently, the 27th largest urban area in the land, watch for that number to rise. Moreover, in this case, the characteristics of Rolleston, the man; forward thinking, original, egalitarian and ahead of his time, definitely apply to Rolleston the town as well. 

ROLLESTON

SPOTLIGHT ON The rise of ‘organic’ shopping We all know that the farmer’s market or weekly fruit and veggie stall day is the new, trendy way to source food for the kitchen, top chefs on television pore over fresh-from-the-fields produce at events like this every week, but how does that relate to items like laptops, shoes or lawnmowers? Taking a leaf from the farmer’s market book, many shoppers in the US and Europe are calling the new shopping trend ‘organic’, even though the items they are after don’t grow on trees. What they mean is that they are shopping as locally as possible, going to ‘indie’ or independent retailers to preserve the character of their towns and neighbourhoods. It’s more than just a hipster reaction to big-box blandness. There are solid mathematics and even some real eco-consciousness behind this new ideal. One hot spot for ‘organic’ shopping is the city of Chicago, where studies have proven that buying from what they would call a ‘mom and pop’ store pumps

$68 from every hundred directly into the immediate neighbourhood. Compare that with only $43 to the hundred at a big, non-locally-owned chain. Total economic benefit per square foot of retail space is also improved in stores which are locally owned (locally owned outlets under a major brand umbrella still make these gains too). Then there’s transport and durability, both of which impact a shopper’s eco-footprint. Locally owned shops tend to buy and recommend quality over mass-produced bulk ‘specials’, leading to a longer lifetime for goods. Drive time is also cut back. The study found that factoring in the value of hours spent driving and shopping, plus

petrol, meant that the small added cost associated with not patronising a ‘bigbox’ mass importer was negated. Add in the service you get in a shop owned

and staffed by people passionate about a niche product and their community, and there are a lot of reasons to shop local. 

Cat comfort in the cold  by Andy Bryenton

There are few more cosy winter scenes than a cat curled up and purring by the fireside, but there’s a big reason why our feline companions love a bit of extra warmth in the winter months. Domesticated cats all come from wildcats called Felis silvestris lybica, native to the Middle East and of course, Egypt. That means that despite their furry coats, many kinds of cat prefer a Mediterranean climate rather than the cold and possible snow prevalent in more southerly climes. For some, endowed through long years of breeding

with a shaggier or longer coat, it’s not a huge problem. However, for shorthaired varieties, or the hairless Sphinx cat, this might mean it’s necessary to think about a cat coat for winter. All cats would prefer to be indoors this time of year, and if it’s at all possible, making some indoor space for your house cat is the best option.

Need a Vet?

We are there when and where you need us. • Pet vets • Large animal vets • Pet supplies • Vaccinations • Farm supplies • Animal health supplies • 24 hour emergency service VetEnt Darfield - 48 South Terrace, Darfield 7510 P (03) 318 8611 darfield@vetent.co.nz

Cats are notoriously independent and like to roam, but in very cold weather it’s easy for them to take on a bigger ‘reconnaissance mission’ than they can handle. If you find a strange cat outside your home in the winter, it may not be a stray, but someone’s pet who has gotten lost or is starting to feel debilitated from the cold. A shaking huddled or damp cat may develop hypothermia if not assisted. A towel is the first step, not just for warmth but also to protect you from unintentional claws (scared or cold cats tend to grip by reflex). A simple cardboard box, hot water bottle and a dry second towel can provide accommodation until

it’s possible to either call the SPCA or try to find the cat’s family. If he or she is in good condition and has come to humans for aid, it’s likely that a cat is domestic and not wild or stray. Thankfully, many cats are microchipped in modern times, making it easy to get someone’s beloved pet back home. Other tech advantages, such as local Facebook pages and civic websites, make for another way to find a lost pet’s owners. It’s a community bonding exercise, in a way, because taking care of a cold and lost pet for a neighbour is just what you would want them to do if the situation was reversed. 

Pet insurance — it is worth it!

Pet insurance has gained huge popularity overseas in the last decade, and it is starting to do so here in New Zealand with an increasing number of insurance firms offering policies. The benefits for pet owners are enormous, and it certainly provides peace of mind.

Routine veterinary care is affordable, and most people can budget for this. However, injuries and illnesses may result in unforeseen medical expenses. Pet insurance can help you budget for these. It is prudent to look at your budget and work out what you need in an insurance policy. There are several companies offering policies in New Zealand, but sorting through the various plan choices and options can be daunting. Asking your vet is a good start. Below are some tips to help you through the process. It is all about you! Are you worried about being able to afford emergency care for accidents or sudden illnesses? Are you worried about paying for medications and tests for ongoing conditions? Some of these may be costly. Each insurance company has different benefit packages.

Standard plans typically offer cover for illnesses and emergencies; for example, treatment for toxin ingestion or car accidents. More comprehensive policies may include day-today care such as neutering, health checks, vaccinations and dental procedures etc. Always read the fine print. Make sure you know whether they cover any pre-existing conditions; also whether the company places age limits on cover and any other exclusions. Some companies may charge more for certain breeds or if you live in certain areas of the country. Make sure it offers you coverage for any speciality care such as referral to a dermatologist, advanced imaging or ophthalmologist. Avoid surprises! Ask for a breakdown of your premium or quote. Premiums may increase

with the age of the pet. Some companies increase premiums as you submit claims and some companies may have a high excess for each claim. Check and compare these costs and find one that suits you. A good insurer should be ‘transparent’ about what they will pay for and how much they will cover. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask your vet for recommendations and ask the insurers themselves. Find out how long the insurance company has been in business and how stable it is. Find out what the company’s claim submission process is; it should be easy to use for you and your vet. Does the prospective insurer offer multipet discounts? Does the policy cover your pet whilst travelling or in the care of a pet sitter or boarding facility? Pet insurance is well worth it. Happy investigating.

Auto & Marine

A legacy of adrenaline  by Andy Bryenton

Subaru has been turning heads with fire-breathing rally cars since the venerable Leone left the tarmac behind in the late 1970s. Since ‘88, the sight of the bright neon pink STI badge on a tuned and aggressive Subaru has meant business, with legendary cars such as the WRX Impreza wearing it proudly. Now there’s a new Subaru, sporting the three letters of power, and it’s part of a bloodline, which has its own performance pedigree. The Legacy 3.6 RS STI takes an already taut and performance orientated machine and adds a twist of sporting heritage and some practical upgrades to make it extra sharp. If you recall the twin turbo Blitzen version of the old B4, you’re thinking along the right lines. The basics remain rock solid. The 2019 Legacy is a large car that handles like a smaller machine in the corners, thanks in part to the clever packaging of its 3.6-litre boxer six. The willing and smooth feel of Subarus of old is retained, with the rapid delivery of 256 horsepower at your command. It all goes down to the road surface via Subaru’s Lineartronic transmission and a set of 255 wide Dunlop tyres;

10

and remember, this car only weighs 1,600 kilograms. However, this is just the factory standard Legacy. After that, they begin adding STI componentry, and unlike some Euro competitors, this is not just a lick of carbon for show. Cross drilled rotors beef up the brakes, while rear sway bars and a flexible tower bar add rigidity in those tight corners. Air is inducted via a new carbon fibre intake and breathed out through sports exhausts. There’s even a big red push button start that will prove irresistible to even the most restrained and grown up amongst us. In short, the STI package hasn’t changed the recipe much. Just added a splash of very zesty hot sauce. Those who fondly recall the WRX earto-ear grin of youth will recognise the new Legacy as part of an interesting family tree. Newcomers will receive a very practical and roomy four-door sedan, which delivers a rewarding drive — and never a boring one. 

Elegant eco-efficiency It’s funny how time can blur preconceptions and make a mockery of stereotypes. When the first hybrid vehicles hit the road, in the not so distant past, there was everything short of warfare between those who drove large sports utility vehicles and those who were early adopters of greener tech. Now, at a stroke, the last grumbles of that argument have been more than put to rest, as Range Rover enjoy great success with their own plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model. It’s a sublime marriage of the things, which have made the Range Rover great across the years; its off-road abilities, power, comfort and style, blended with the ability to deliver a fuel sipping 3.6 litres for every 100 kilometres, or more than 50km on electric power alone. There hasn’t been any watering down of the power on tap here. There are still close to 400 horses under the hood, with backup for the Range Rover’s lightweight engine coming from an 85kw electric motor and a low-mounted battery pack to increase stability. This large vehicle accelerates from 0-100kp/ h in just 6.8 seconds, which was supercar fast not so long ago (exactly the same as a 1991 Porsche 911). Bear in mind that raw speed is not the party piece of this machine, however. For all its elegance and luxurious interior trappings, the PHEV Range Rover is all about conquering harsh conditions, and it still wades, climbs, crawls and descends hills with military aplomb. In fact, EV only mode makes for silent, scalpel-accurate low-speed driving.

SERVICE FOR EVERY TYPE OF JET BOAT, JET UNIT AND ENGINE

Range Rover has been quietly innovating since the inception of the brand, with successive generations introducing smart ideas, which are carried on into the future. From the idea of a folding tailgate, which forms a handy seat or bench through to modern innovations such as a phone app to preheat or cool the cabin, there is a lot to explore beyond the PHEV underpinnings

of this eco-conscious Range Rover. Need we even mention that the Queen drives one? This feat of engineering deserves a test drive just to see how ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘luxurious power’ can live together in harmony. 
