Conferring classic status Long ago — well, not so long …

Local Faringdon kid, Ethan Hunt loves tucking into the tasty treats on offer at South Point!

While some other areas of New Zealand are overwhelmed by congestion, safety risks and even physical confrontations at school drop-off and pick-up times, Rolleston drivers are generally wellbehaved say local principals and police. Rolleston’s dramatic population growth — more than 51% growth since 2006 and the 2013 Census showing Rolleston has almost four-times the number of under 15-year-olds than over 65s — has seen the opening of two new

schools in the town within the space of two years. Elsewhere in New Zealand, such growth has resulted in debilitating congestion that has garnered national attention. Nevertheless, that is not the

case in Rolleston — at least not yet, and school staff, students, caregivers and police are working hard to keep it that way for a long time to come. continued on page 3 …

The good life tastes great! You’ve got a family friendly bar/restaurant, authentic Indian cuisine and traditional Fish ’n Chips just down the road! Celebrating five years

u by Kent Caddick

This month marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston and it will be celebrated with a Birthday Bonanza event.

p Rolleston College principal Steve Saville says so far traffic around the school hasn’t been an issue.

The principal of one of those new schools, Steve Saville, whose Rolleston College opened its doors with 220 students in January 2017 and has since doubled in size, said he and neighbouring school Clearview Primary, experienced some initial difficulties with shared street and drop off times, but even then, driver behaviour around the schools was “good”. “Driver behaviour has never been an issue. Yes, there have been occasions of incorrect parking and drivers staying a little too long, but generally, they have been good. “The problem we experienced, and I believe Clearview experienced, was Broadlands Drive itself. That becomes extremely jammed up around three o’clock. “But there is a new road planned which will take pressure off the one road going up to the Gould’s Road roundabout. It’s a question of town planning, and that is being addressed,” he said. The principal of Rolleston’s other new school, Lemonwood Grove’s Sean Bailey, is also planning ahead. His student role has more than doubled since the school opened in March 2017 and it has the capacity to grow to 750. Sean doesn’t see school congestion as a problem yet, but he and his team are working proactively to prevent it from becoming one.

“We share our carparks with the adjacent Waitaha School so it can get busy. But we are constantly monitoring carpark activity and made some changes to improve the situation. “Our priority is to make our carparks safe and usable. And that, I believe, we have done.” Like other principals interviewed for this story, Sean Bailey is complimentary about the behaviour of parents and caregivers using parking at the school. “They are usually very good, and they know and adhere to the rules and show a lot of common sense. “If we have any problem, it is probably more other road users not keeping to the speed limit around schools,” he said. Rolleston police are aware of the problem facing other areas; they echo the thoughts of local principals in not yet seeing it as a major problem in Rolleston. “We have found that local drivers are making good decisions around schools,” said Sergeant Grant Stewart, whose team constantly monitors traffic activity around local schools. “It is mostly a matter of common sense: showing courtesy, being aware of road and weather conditions, and adhering to the two-minute rule for ‘kiss and go’ stop-offs. “Most drivers, we find, are pretty clear on that. We have very few complaints, and the schools and the public are doing a good job in Rolleston,” he said.

More than 1.4 million people have visited the centre since its opening in June 2013 at a cost of $15 million, but already demand for the facilities has led the Selwyn District Council to put in place plans to expand the facility. Council recently approved a proposal to expand the aquatic centre with the addition of a 25 metre pool. Construction is expected to begin in 2019. p More than 1.4 million visits have been recorded at the Selwyn aquatic facilities Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston in the five years since manager, James Richmond, its opening said the expansion will be a significant boost to the centre, thank the community for their continued allowing more swimmers to enjoy the support in making the facility such facility and increasing the capacity for a success.” events. Associate Professor Abbott is an organiser of PA2050, a conference at Lincoln University this week, which has some high-profile speakers to address the issues and help chart a strategy to keep them protected. One of the things he wants to come out of the conference is to find whether New Zealanders are too focussed on iconic species rather than restoring whole ecosystems. “With over eight million hectares of public conservation lands, the challenge of looking after our special places is enormous,” he said. “We need to keep questioning just what is our long-term vision for protected areas.” He also wants to find out about the effectiveness of connecting young New Zealanders and New Zealanders in general to conservation values. “This also includes our marine areas, which span the land, freshwater, marine and Antarctic environments, for which we are kaitiaki,” The conference title, PA2050, is a reference to the Government’s 2050 predator-free policy, but goes further, asking how the land itself will be

managed to ensure biodiversity and well-being. Among the speakers are the Minister of Conservation, Eugenie Sage, DOC director-general Lou Sanson and the chair of the New Zealand Tourism Board Kerry Prendergast, who is also chair of the Environmental Protection Authority. ¢

The Selwyn District Council is reminding drivers to stop for pedestrians at kea crossings and reminding pedestrians they only have the right of way when the crossings are manned. Kea crossings provide children with a safe place to cross the road to get to school and are installed around schools so school patrols can control traffic and safely guide children across the street. Waihora take out country title u by Kent Caddick

Waihora has been crowned Canterbury Country rugby champions after a pulsating final in Tai Tapu on Saturday. The Selwyn-based side faced Rakaia, which was out to erase the memories of last year’s final when it was beaten by another Selwyn side, Southbridge. Waihora halfback, Harrison Kirk, got the scoring underway when he slotted a penalty after just three minutes. Rakaia equalised with a penalty of its own a couple of minutes later when fullback Andrew Latham was successful with the boot. Waihora winger, Joel Harden opened the try account for the home side when he scored in the corner. While Kirk missed the conversion, he added a penalty a short time later to give Waihora an eleven to three lead. Following a Rakaia penalty, Kirk then scored himself and duly converted. Rakaia finally crossed the Waihora try line late in the half, and a further penalty closed the gap before Kirk landed another penalty to make it 21–14 at the half-time break.

Waihora started with second-half in the best of fashion when flanker Connor Macbutler broke away to score unopposed after just two minutes of the half. Rakaia responded with a converted try to Tomici Nabakeke and a penalty to close the gap up to two points. Kirk responded with another penalty to give Waihora a five-point lead, 29–24 but then lost a player to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Rakaia attacked hard but couldn’t find a way through the 14-man Waihora defence, which was well marshalled by fullback and Canterbury provincial rep, Mark Maitland. Restored to a full 15 players, Waihora saw attack as the best form of defence and was rewarded when Maitland skipped through the Rakaia defence to score a try, which Harrison converted to give the home side a 36–24 lead, which it never surrendered. ¢

Pets & Equine IS YOUR DOG IN NEED OF A WASH OR GROOM?

ADVERTORIAL

Arthritis and your pet by Yolande Howell, Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Arthritis affects one in five dogs and one in three cats. It is a common condition vets see in practice but may be difficult for owners to recognise. Arthritis or degenerative joint disease is a joint problem that causes pain and reduces mobility. Arthritis could be caused by developmental problems, previous injury, infection or even the body’s own immune system. Normal joints consist of cartilage acting as a protective cushioning between two bones. With arthritis, thinning of the cartilage along with joint fluid build-up and the formation of bony growths within the joint occur. Over time, pain and reduced joint mobility result. Signs of arthritis include and are not limited to — stiffness after exercise, difficulty getting up, laying down, walking, climbing stairs or jumping, wasting away of muscle, limited movement, joint swelling, grating sound of a joint or just being quieter than usual. It is sometimes difficult to recognise arthritis in cats and dogs; they don’t tend to complain about their aching joints and owners assume the signs of arthritis is ‘normal’ in older animals. It is recommended that you take your cat or dog for yearly checks, this can really help your vet identify these signs early. X-rays can also help identify arthritic bony growths and joint abnormalities. Arthritis is a lifelong condition; however, it can be managed. The most important thing is to keep your cat or dog slim thereby reducing the load on his or her joints. Talk to your vet, and they’ll be more than happy to come up with a slimming programme for your pet. Monitored exercise on soft surfaces can help. Swimming is also great exercise for arthritic dogs or even cats if they are inclined. You may have already noticed that arthritis is aggravated by cold and damp. So keep your

Massage helps increase your pet’s flexibility and circulation, and you can do that at home, ask your vet for some instructions to help you get started. Many joint supplements are available for dogs and cats; they form a useful part of arthritis management. Pain medication is often prescribed to help relieve signs, make sure they are prescribed by your veterinarian for your pet because many human pain relievers are poisonous to animals. Other aids in the management of arthritis include acupuncture, it is painless and has shown some success in animals. Ramps instead of steps, flooring that is not slippery and a lovely warm, soft bed all help in the management of arthritis. There is no cure once arthritis develops; unfortunately, it is a slowly progressive

condition. We do recommend trying to prevent or delay the onset of arthritis, however. Regular moderate exercise and a highquality diet can help manage your pet’s body weight, keep your dog or cat’s musculoskeletal system in good shape and help delay ageing. Ask your vet to recommend a diet and exercise programme that suits your pet and your lifestyle.

Auto & Marine Check out the new Sportsman 470 Range TODAY!

ADVERTORIAL

HamiltonJet’s Sportsman range 470 sets new benchmark for recreational jet boating HamiltonJet New Zealand has taken a step away from the conventional with the design of its newest jet boat model, the Sportsman Range 470.

Accidents can happen, but good jet boaters are always prepared and will come home safe. HamiltonJet NZ is dedicated to the safety of all jet boaters and the efforts by JBNZ to make our sport safe and enjoyable for all river users. HamiltonJet NZ

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

Launched in October 2017, the 470 takes a fresh look at every aspect of comfort, safety and practicality for the jet boater and passengers, with the boat’s whole design, from bow to stern and keel to windscreen, a reflection of this focus. The Sportsman Range 470 offers a different profile from anything else seen on local rivers and lakes, thanks largely to its distinctive curved sheer line and sleek windscreen. HamiltonJet NZ Manager, John Connelly, says these obvious differences are just a small part of the whole design philosophy behind the Sportsman Range, which has come about after listening closely to jet boater feedback for many years. “We’ve taken into consideration all those things jet boaters have told us they like and dislike, and what they want from a boat to give them the best jet boating experience,” says Connelly. “Then we looked at every part of our current hull and deck designs to see how they match to those ideals.” HamiltonJet’s various recreational boat models have proven popular for many years, and it was important the new 470 didn’t lose any of the great qualities of these previous designs.

“We’ve taken all the good thing about our jet boats and enhanced them further, while at the same time taking a clean sheet redesign approach to those aspects of our current designs, which didn’t fit this new philosophy.” The Sportsman Range 470 is an evolution of the HamiltonJet 151, taking the base 151 aluminium hull and increasing the strength of the delta keel and hull bottom, plus reconfigured the hull strakes to improve lift and cornering performance. Welding of the hull is completed by ABS certified welders using a jig for consistency of hull shape and integrity of weld-line. The result is a stronger boat that tracks smoothly and turns tightly and consistently in all conditions. The 470s wider cockpit and curved sheer line provide increased height in the cockpit,

dash and windscreen, offering more space for all passengers as well as better protection from the elements behind the raked screen. The windscreen has a hinged central section, behind which is a solid step moulded into the dash, providing easy and safe foredeck access. A handrail is positioned behind the top edge of the windscreen, so hands are better protected from wind and weather. The moulded fibreglass deck allows for the 470s fluid curves and the seamless integration of hatches and insets from bow, through the dash and cockpit to the transom. Along with large fore and aft deck hatches, the 470 incorporates a dashboard glovebox on the passenger side, as well as a carbonfibre insert for the engine gauges, allowing customised gauge layout and easier access for maintenance.

Auto & Marine

Conferring classic status u by Andy Bryenton

Long ago — well, not so long, but definitely in an era when there were still such things as milk tokens and walkmans — I got some advice about buying a first car. “Forget the big, loud, Chrysler Valiant Regal which the bloke up the road was selling for five hundred bucks. And don’t put in a bid for your mate’s big brother’s crusty old Falcon panel van. Gas guzzlers the lot of them, and little Japanese cars are the way of the future.” The old man had just bought a Toyota, and he was impressed. But I was unimpressed when, years later, I idly clicked through Trade Me to see the exact same Valiant regal 770 listed for over ten thousand dollars as a rusteaten shell. That old panel van? Seems that was a classic too — it’s just that we hadn’t seen it coming. Come to think of it, that old Corolla which had Dad so impressed is now a collectible too. So the big question is — how can you pick them? How can you spend small change now on a machine that’s likely to become an icon in the future? It seems the first ingredient is rarity. Special editions and discontinued badges, strange design quirks — especially those which were seen as weird and odd in their day — these are the signs of a possible future classic. An example — with the Ford Falcon badge now sadly extinct, a 2011 All Blacks special edition Falcon is likely to be a rarity in years to come. But for real quirky appeal, try to snap up the tiny, massively

powerful — actually designed by our nation’s rugby team and Mountune — All Blacks Ford Fiesta. Another signifier is prestige combined with time. About twenty five years is the lowest ebb of depreciation on a car, so right now there are some golden era Japanese classics going cheap. We are in a unique position to import from the land of the rising sun, thanks to our auto laws and proximity. You might be thinking — ‘Wait? Japanese classics? All real classic cars are either European or American!’ But you’d be corrected by the massive owners groups who obsess over brands like Toyota and Honda. The Toyota classics group even get out for a track day meet once a year, with the likes of MR2s, Celica Gt4s, Supras, Crowns, Centuries and AE86s on display. These guys know their stuff just as well as the hot rod crowd, and that last model — the AE86 — once cost peanuts but now fetches prices in the mid to late 10,000s. The reality is, a classic is that car you pined for as a kid. It might be that

one you owned for a brief time before rust and practicality combined to steal it away. It might be a legend you’ve seen on the screen, or a neighbour’s ride from down the road.

Those old Valiants and Holdens are classics because of what they meant to people. So buy what you love. Resale value doesn’t matter when you want to keep a car forever. ¢
