Bellyful is a national not-for-profit organisation which provides meals for families with newborn babies, and families with young children who are struggling with illness. “Our volunteers deliver free cooked meals to these families,” Selwyn branch co-ordinator Sarah Dewes said. “There’s no catch or payment involved, we just understand that these periods in life are hard enough as it is, without having to try and worry about getting

dinner to the table.” The Selwyn branch was set up in June, 2015 due to the growth in demand for its services which couldn’t be catered for by being part of the Christchurch branch. Sarah Dewes said with an ever-growing community in Selwyn, their volunteers have been kept very busy cooking, delivering meals and fundraising. “To date we have 27 active volunteers, have had 10 cookathons and have delivered 1,058 meals to 194 families

Mrs Lee won a $6,000 travel package from Foodstuffs after her entry into the competition was picked out of thousands from around the South Island following a purchase at the West Melton Four Square supermarket. She said she will be using it to bring family over from Australia for Christmas. “My daughter, her husband and their two children, my grandchildren, live in a relatively remote part of central New South Wales and getting to New Zealand from there is a long and expensive trip.

“My son and his family live in Darfield so it will be great to have the whole family together for Christmas so they can all catch up.” West Melton Four Square owner Brent Little said he was delighted for Mrs Lee. “It’s great to have a local win this competition and what a great way to spend her prize.” The supermarket opened in the new shopping centre in West Melton late last year. ¢

She said they are also looking for volunteers to help out. “The 27 volunteers within the Selwyn branch are locals, wanting to help our own community.” ¢

The Government is committed to delivering a better police service for our local communities, which is why we’re putting more police on the beat in Selwyn. Selwyn is going to receive four additional staff for a mobile policing team for emergency response and dealing with crime, as well as four new police staff to provide a 24 hour police presence based in Rolleston. Rolleston is one of 20 towns across the country that is being upgraded to round-the-clock patrolling police coverage over the next four years. The Government’s target is to have 95 per cent of New Zealanders within 25 kilometres of a 24 hour/7 day per week response base. As part of the Government’s $503 million Safer Communities package, a total of 880 officers will be deployed across all police districts over the next four years. Our Safer Communities package also sets challenging targets

for police, including higher attendance at home burglaries, seizing more assets from organised crime, reducing deaths from family violence, and reducing reoffending by Maori. Across the country, a number of officers are being allocated to regions with rising crime, and areas of focus that require specialist staff, such as robberies, child abuse, adult sexual assault, and serious crime. This will free up other constables to work on the frontline. We want to ensure that we send police to areas where they can make the most difference and support existing police operations. Police are best-placed to determine how these additional officers should be deployed as they understand and experience first-hand the local needs and concerns. District Commanders have also taken into consideration things like projected population growth, crime patterns, and police demand when allocating staff for the next 12 months. Selwyn is a rapidly growing region, and the additional staff will help boost local police capacity, support rural policing teams and enable officers to respond faster to call outs. ¢

West Melton residents said goodbye to their community hall in style on Saturday night. The residents held a ball in the West Melton Community Hall which is set to be removed to make way for a $6.9 million multi-purpose community and recreation centre. The old hall has seen school concerts, wedding receptions, dances, horticultural shows, reunions, district farewells and local group meetings, as well as ballet and gym classes. For the last time the hall resonated with people having a great time as residents gathered to mark the passing of the hall which began its life as a wool shed for the West Melton Sale Yards and Dip Company, before being turned into a social hall in the 1920s. The original hall burnt down in 1935 but with the help of community fundraising was rebuilt and in the 1960s

further fundraising saw the addition of a kitchen, supper room and lounge as well as the addition of a stage, and a room for Plunket. At the ball a presentation of a West Melton Medal was made to John Pearce, the oldest living resident on West Melton. Mr Pearce was born in West Melton in 1931 and has lived his whole life in the Selwyn township, attending primary school at West Melton School which had only 14 students at the time. He said he and his brother used to help in the potato fields around the town after school and during lunch hours before going on to establish his own farm growing potatoes which became well-known throughout the district. ¢

Darfield in command u by Kent Caddick

Recently crowned Canterbury Country rugby champions Southbridge has kicked off the defence of its Ellesmere division one title with a loss to Waihora. In a repeat of last season’s Ellesmere final, the Tai Tapu-based Waihora extracted revenge for that loss taking the match 29-24. Darfield began its title tilt with a commanding 54-10 win over West Melton although the ‘Westies’ matched Darfield in the first quarter of the match. As the game progressed Darfield exerted its control in all facets of the game to run out convincing winners. Lincoln, which like Darfield made the Canterbury Country semi-finals

this year, was also a big winner in its match against the combined Burnham Dunsandel Irwell team, running out convincing winners 57-10. In the other match of the first round of the Ellesmere competition, Prebbleton was in full command of its clash against Rolleston, racking up 41 unanswered points. Results: Waihora 29 v Southbridge 24; Darfield 54 v West Melton 10; Prebbleton 41 v Rolleston 0; BDI 10 v Lincoln 57; Hornby-bye. ¢

Students’ art work on display u by Kent Caddick

Artwork by Darfield High School students will feature in a new exhibition at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield. The exhibition, entitled ‘Paint is Pain and Drinking T’, is a collaborative show featuring the work of Years 11, 12, and 13 art students from Darfield High School. Malvern Community Arts Council coordinator Rose Gerard said the art displayed in this exhibition is work from Terms 1 and 2 when students are beginning to find their feet and explore the initial ideas set out in a selfdriven proposal. “As the year progresses, students will continue to pursue these concepts, working towards the end-of-year folio examination for NCEA, due in October and November,” Ms Gerard said. “Having the exhibition at this point is a rewarding break for the senior students. It allows them to view and

enjoy their accomplishments thus far, and to take a step back, take a large breath, and carry on their journey into Term 3 and the completion of their folio in Term 4.” She said the visual arts programme at the high school offers students an exciting opportunity to travel on a journey of self-expression and personal interest, and to develop a conceptual way of thinking. “In return for their passion, perseverance, and time, they are rewarded with a body of art which is a reflection of themselves and their yearlong journey.” The exhibition will open on June 23 and run through to July 6 and the gallery will be open daily, except Mondays, from 10am to 4pm for the duration of the show. ¢

Pets & Livestock ADVERTORIAL

Arthritis and your pet

REAL PET FOOD Manufacturers of Fine Natural Pet Food

u by Yolande Howell, Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Arthritis affects one in five dogs and one in three cats. It is a common condition vets see in practice but may be difficult for owners to recognise. Arthritis or degenerative joint disease is a joint problem that causes pain and reduces mobility. Arthritis could be caused by developmental problems, previous injury, infection, or even the body’s own immune system. Normal joints consists of cartilage acting as a protective cushioning between two bones. With arthritis, thinning of the cartilage along with joint fluid build-up and the formation of bony growths within the joint occur. Over time, pain and reduced joint mobility result. Signs of arthritis include and are not limited to: • stiffness after exercise; • difficulty getting up, laying down, walking, climbing stairs or jumping; • wasting away of muscle; • limited movement; • joint swelling; • grating sound of a joint, • being quieter than usual. It is sometimes difficult to recognise arthritis in cats and dogs — they don’t tend to complain about their aching joints and owners assume the signs of arthritis is ‘normal’ in older animals. It is recommended that you take your cat or dog for yearly checks — this can really help your vet identify these signs early. X-rays can also help identify arthritic bony growths and joint abnormalities. Arthritis is a lifelong condition, however it can be managed. The most important thing is to keep your cat or dog slim thereby reducing the load on his or her joints. Talk to your vet and they’ll be more than happy to come up with a slimming programme for your pet. Monitored exercise on soft surfaces can help. Swimming is also a great exercise for arthritic dogs. You may have already noticed that arthritis is aggravated by cold and damp. So keep your pet warm and dry. Coats and padded beds can help. Warm compresses can soothe sore joints also. Massage helps increase your pet’s flexibility and circulation, and you can do that at home. Ask your vet for some instructions to help you get started. Many joint supplements are available for dogs and cats — they form a useful part of arthritis management. Pain medication is often prescribed to help relieve signs. Make sure they are prescribed by your veterinarian for your pet because many human pain relievers are poisonous to animals.

Other aids in the management of arthritis include acupuncture. It is painless and has shown some success in animals. Ramps instead of steps, flooring that is not slippery, and a lovely warm soft bed will all help in the management of arthritis. Prevention is always better than cure. Regular moderate exercise and a high quality diet can help manage your pet’s body weight, keep your dog or cat’s musculoskeletal system in good shape and help delay ageing. Ask your vet to recommend a diet and exercise programme that suits your pet and your lifestyle.

Nick was soon joined in the industry by his brother William who began planting apple trees on some family land nearby. Later on their sister Annabel bought an orchard down the road and the three siblings decided to combine. At first they supplied local markets with their apples and then developed an export market and a pack house was built. “In 2001 the boys made a juice machine,” says Carey. “They are naturally mechanically minded. It started as just a hobby and we began to produce juice. “Then the sales of our juice started to increase and people began to ask where else they could buy it, so the Mill Orchard brand was born in 2001. “All our juices are apple based and not from concentrate. Pointing the way ahead u by Andy Bryenton

Rather than seeing the end of its Australian manufacturing in the near future as a blow to the brand, Holden is embracing the opportunity to shift its focus and present a totally new selection of vehicles from 2017 onward. With more than 20 fresh models in the pipeline, Holden is determined to bring the best of General Motors’ global catalogue to the antipodes. The new Astra is a key part of that strategy, shaking off the image of Holden as ‘those Commodore guys’ and igniting interest in a whole new slice of the auto market. There’s no better way of doing that than sharing the success of what is branded as Vauxhall or Opel in Europe, but which will be all Holden here in Australia and New Zealand. That level of success is stunning, because the new Astra doesn’t just challenge the likes of BMW, Mercedes

and Peugeot — it beat them hands down to become 2016’s European Car of the Year. Looking at the sleek lines of the 2017 Astra as it will hit Kiwi roads, it’s easy to see how far this badge has come. Far from the utilitarian hatch of previous years, the new Astra is all about style, with special attention paid to the interior cabin and its technological appointments. Customers wanted more safety, more luxury and less buttons, so Holden has delivered,

with an intuitive layout centred around a multipurpose touchscreen. Power is provided by a choice of either the tried-and-true 1.6-litre turbo four already in use by Holden, or a brand new 1.4-litre unit developing 110 kilowatts and 240 Newton-metres of torque. Both will come mated up with a sixspeed transmission, with a choice of both automatic or stick shift for the driving purist. Electric power steering and a suite of driver assists such as

With this latest offering, Holden has given us a glimpse of a world beyond the dominance of just the big Commodore — a European-built, world-beating small car which announces the intention of GM to bring the full might of its global operations to bear on the local market. If this is the way it intends to proceed, the future of the Holden badge looks bright, taking the fight to the competition across the small car, SUV and highly contested light commercial sectors. ¢

A century behind the wheel u by Andy Bryenton

In 1917 the automobile was still a novel sight in New Zealand — a growing trend replacing the trusty horse, but nevertheless a futuristic machine. New cars came with complimentary driving lessons, and the state of the art was still defined by spoked wheels and hand-cranked starters. One would have to have been a visionary indeed to foresee a time when every household had a car in the driveway, and when road transport stood behind a vast swathe of the economy. But two such people existed — Mr J Bett and Mr E Wackrill of Fielding. They convened a small ‘town hall’ meeting of early motor trade professionals in the local library, attracting fifteen contributors. From here the discussion went national, with a meeting just a month later in Palmerston North drawing a crowd of 52 early auto importers, repairers, servicemen and garage owners. Their intent was unanimous — a national organisation should be formed to ensure best practice, foster talent, engage with the public and the government, and make motoring in New Zealand an all round better experience. Today the MTA — the Motor Trade Association — boasts a roll of over 4,000 members, spanning the nation.

Their advocacy and oversight role means they are often called upon to weigh in on debates at a governmental level, while still speaking up for the Kiwi motorist. MTA apprenticeship programmes seek to grow the skills and confidence of a new generation of auto mechanics and technicians for the future. The ubiquitous MTA gift card has become New Zealand’s most long established stocking filler and birthday card addition. On all levels, the modern association continues to uphold the spirit of its hundred-year-old charter, ensuring a better experience from buying a car through to keeping it safe and reliable. Massive celebrations this year have seen events unfold, such as a display of classic and rare automobilia in Wellington, and the publication of a book charting the rise of the automobile alongside the MTA itself. A special group of scholarships are being awarded to

Ford’s field day firsts u by Andy Bryenton

At an event famed for showcasing the best tools for the agricultural trade, it would normally be a safe bet that Ford’s perennially popular Ranger ute should take pride of place on their stand. And while there was certainly plenty of buzz around the Ranger, continuing its run of dominance in the Kiwi light commercial market, it was a pair of Mondeos which proved the surprise of the show. The mid-sized Ford sedan has been shown in two new forms at Mystery Creek, with each one taking a different direction. The ST Line Mondeo is a long, low station wagon with 19 inch alloys, aggressively aerodynamic lines, and a powerful twin turbo 2 litre diesel under the hood that’s good for over 200hp. This is a definite step away from the image of the Mondeo as a responsible, businesslike fleet car and into the territory of European rivals such as BMW — and it’s also proof that the long-distance cruising wagon is not a thing of the past in this age of the SUV. It’s the other Mondeo on show which has generated the most gossip however — a fully fledged hybrid

Pay attention!

around road works

p ST-Line Mondeo hypes up the image of Ford’s mid-sized cruiser — there’s also a hybrid option for Mondeo drivers in 2017

packing in a 35 kilowatt electric motor alongside a petrol engine. It’s a setup seen before in the likes of Toyota’s Prius, and Porsche’s 918 Spyder — but the hybrid drive Modeo sits firmly between these poles of technology and performance. Attractive features of course, include the fact that this is a less ostentatious way to announce that you’re saving the planet while saving petrol, and that despite a sliver of boot space being sacrificed to batteries this is still a full sized Mondeo. That fuel consumption figure, razed down to a frugal 2.7 litres per 100 kilometres,

is sure to impress corporate fleet managers who already like the petrol powered Mondeo for its combination of reliability and affordability. It’s going to be an order-only option here in New Zealand when it arrives in the late stages of 2017, but with a price not so high above the Prius, this might be another front Ford are opening up on their big rival. In the meantime, steady sales of the custom Ranger in all its forms will keep the Blue Oval bosses happy throughout the post Field Days season. ¢
