Rolleston resident Kim Vargo is offering her home as a collection hub for the Facebook based group Help for the homeless, Christchurch. “It’s like the Student Army Facebook group. It’s a grass root movement and it’s exploding,” Ms Vargo said. With hubs being set up around the city and in places such as Akaroa and Rangiora, Ms Vargo decided Rolleston needed to become involved too. “I’m putting it on Rolleston people, let’s get this area involved. We have

the resources. Homelessness doesn’t need to be part of the new normal for Christchurch,” Ms Vargo said. The group was set up by Ms Vargo’s friend Amy Burke from Christchurch who saw homeless people wandering the streets and living in cars and wanted to do something about it. “Amy is opening people’s eyes to see that homeless are people just like you and me,” Ms Vargo said. When The Record contacted Amy Burke she said homelessness had

become a serious problem in the city since the earthquakes. With high rents and a shortage of houses a growing number of people were living in cars, sheds and abandoned buildings. “It’s all over town and scattered throughout the city. If you go down to the beach any night of the week there’s cars parked up with people sleeping in them,” Ms Burke said. continued on page 4 …

Eight-year-old Amelia Holland of Rolleston has won a place in the Canterbury Ballet School’s tour to Prague, Czech Republic next month.

 Amelia Holland of Rolleston will travel to Prague next month to compete at the Prague International Dance Festival

“Amelia is one of 21 dancers to make up a junior and senior company to compete at the Prague International Dance Festival and Competition 2014,” said Canterbury Ballet teacher Taisia Misserich. “This is a wonderful opportunity for growth on a personal and artistic level,” Ms Misserich said. Amelia will perform in two ballets in Prague, including Le Corsair and will also attend classes and workshops. Amelia has been learning ballet since she was three-years-old and has lessons three times a week, lasting between two to three hours each time. “She focuses well and has a good attitude. In ballet it is not so much about talent, it is the degree of determination and focus,” Ms Misserich said. Amelia told The Record that she likes ballet because of the fun things

you get to do. She loved being a snowflake in one ballet recital and her favourite costume is the white tutu she will wear at Prague. She said she was looking forward to dancing on stage in Prague. Amelia said it was important to stretch and wake up the body before dancing. Her favourite ballet move is the leap. Amelia said she would like to be a singer and dancer when she grows up. 

Rural Cancer Society volunteers were named the overall winners of the 2014 awards at a celebration held this week in Wellington. The awards acknowledge the commitment, dedication and hard work of volunteers who give their time to improve the quality of lives of New Zealanders. Mr Ryall said it was a privilege to personally recognise these award recipients and hear inspiring stories from health volunteers in New Zealand. “Well done to all the individuals and teams who were nominated for the awards and congratulations to those recognised as outstanding achievers.”

The two ballets performed were Class and an abridged version of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen, according to the school’s principal Emma Body. “The concert was really fantastic. This year we had a fabulous music score which was slightly more contemporary than classical and we used plenty of special effects in the stage design,” Ms Body said. This was the sixth annual production put on by the ballet school which has classes in Rolleston, Weedons and Lincoln. “We endeavour each year to put on a professional show in a professional working theatre so the kids really have a great experience.” Ms Body said the school began six years ago with 30 students and has now grown to 130. “I employ four teachers who teach alongside myself. The dance

school offers classes in classical ballet, jazz, hip hop, musical theatre and contemporary.” Ms Body began dancing when she was just four-years-old under the tutelage of Gillian Francis in Nelson. “I have danced all my life and progressed through all my ballet performance exams. I then went on to study science and dance, including choreography and contemporary dance, at Otago University.” “I set up the Selwyn School of Dance in 2007, when my eldest daughter headed to school. I studied my Associate Diploma and Anatomy Diploma with the International Dance Teachers Association in the United Kingdom.” “In recent years I have also volunteered my services and choreographed works for local school productions and for the Christchurch Ballet Society’s Evening of Dance Gala.” 

 by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The Selwyn District Council has met with roading contractor HEB Construction over concerns about the quality of the district’s road repairs.

 The Selwyn District Council hopes residents will see an improved response time in fixing potholes after a meeting with its roading contractors

Council CEO David Ward said contractors were made aware of council’s concerns over the time taken to respond to requests to fix potholes and the quality of repair work. “We had a very productive meeting with contractors. I was satisfied that our concerns were clearly understood. “The key outcome being that pothole repairs are carried out once, and not be subject to the repairs having to

be repaired,” Mr Ward said. Council staff will continue to have regular discussions with the contractor to ensure the pothole problems have been fixed. People can report a pothole by visiting council’s website and using the helpline form which is available online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/reportit or by phoning council on 03 347 2800 or 03 318 8338. 

Aylesbury couple take extra care with lamb  by Kelly M. Phillips

Ensuring lambs have a stress free life is at the heart of Hamish and Andrea Reid’s farm philosophy. The Aylesbury couple have been raising lambs at their farm Gumshade for 23 years and five years ago became involved with Farm Quality Group which was established by a group of farmers who wanted to export their lambs under a specific brand called Kumanu.

This was established by creating a partnership between New Zealand exporter ANZCO Foods and a customer in Europe. Kumanu is a Maori word which means to care for, foster and cherish. Hamish said the Kumanu way of doing business focusses on a family farmed, stress free environment for lambs with a product which will have a consistently high eating quality and is free from hormones, antibiotics and pesticides. The packaging for Kumanu lamb contains a barcode which customers can scan to follow the story of their lamb from farm to table. “Consumers are more and more interested in where the product comes from,” Hamish said. “The Kumanu way of raising lambs means there are protocols

The Reids have also had the opportunity to sample their own product. “It was delicious and tender,” Andrea said. To Hamish and Andrea, the manner in which they raise lambs is good for both their business and the perception others have of New Zealand products. 

I was certainly well prepared.” Sarah said her training for next year’s competition has already begun. “It’s about keeping on top of everything that’s going on in agriculture. For me, since I’ve done the competition a lot of times, it’s about picking up on the parts of agriculture that I don’t know a lot about.” She said being involved in the Young Farmer’s competitions has taught her a lot. “You get hooked. Screenworks celebrates 20 years of business Two decades ago, Screenworks co-owners Alan King and Brett Swain took a chance on purchasing a screening plant together. “We both worked for another contractor who talked about selling off one of his plants,” Alan said. The new business they put together was initially called Canterbury Screen Hire and it consisted of two men, one screening plant, two small utes and a loyal dog. “At the start of the business we worked crazy long hours,” Brett said Today the business is known as Screenworks and its capital has expanded to include a fleet of trucks, a power screen and several jaw and cone crushers. It employs a staff of 28 and has a brand new maintenance facility in Aylesbury next to the company’s quarry. “Everything we do, we take to the job.” Alan said. Screenworks offers mobile screening and crushing of clay, coal, compost, soil, ice grit, lime aggregates, and recycled materials. It also recycles concrete. Alan said the business was able to buy its first crusher in 1999 when they took over the Selwyn District Council contract for road maintenance. After the earthquakes hit Christchurch the business was in high demand. “With the tragedy came the opportunity to help with the rebuild,” said Mr Swain.

 Alan King and Brett Swain are co-owners of Screenworks

He and Mr King have high praise for their workers.“We’re proud of the business. It’s been a joint effort with our wives and staff,” Alan said, while Brett added, “we have an awesome staff and great clients.” Employee Jono King has been working with the company for three years and said he loves his job. “There’s always something different. One day you’re working in river beds the next day you’re up in the mountains.” The company’s work has extended outside of Christchurch to the West Coast and Southland and they have just opened a new branch in Wellington. Continued growth seems certain. “It doesn’t look like it’s going to stop,” Brett said. For the Screenworks team that spells out a bright future.

Selwyn dairy giant Synlait has combined the management of its ingredient and nutritional sales teams to streamline service to its clients according to managing director Dr John Penno.

Dr Penno said the changes to the senior team structure will increase accountability and reduce operating complexity. “Over the past year we have made significant business development progress particularly with our tier one multinational customers. We are increasingly selling a range of products to them and we need to provide a single point of contact to better manage these relationships,” he said. Primary school runners battle muddy conditions  by Kent Caddick

West Melton School was one of several Selwyn schools taking part in this year’s annual Canterbury Primary Schools’ cross country event. As in previous years the top cross country runners from the Selwyn

schools were chosen from their own cross country events to qualify for the Canterbury race. The race was once again held around Halswell Quarry but some wet weather prior to the event meant this year the children not only had to battle competitors from other schools but also an extremely muddy track. That made for some slow times but increased the enjoyment factor for a number of the children. 

Gearing up for garlic  by Rachel Vogan, www.tuigarden.co.nz

I’m a garlic girl through and through. I love growing it, cooking it — and of course eating it. Garlic (Allium sativum), is a phenomenal crop that deserves all the accolades it gets not only for its flavour, but also for its health properties and ability to deter pests when used as a companion plant. For me and many others it’s a mainstay in the veggie patch. Even when

I have been between homes I’ve grown it successfully in pots and tubs. By nature it’s a cool customer, by that I mean, it needs to be planted in the coldest months of the year like most other bulbs. Source out the best fresh organic garlic you can find from the farmers’
