New season begins

The Pioneers of Canterbury marching club is home …

 Matariki, the Maori New Year, was celebrated in sterling style in Malvern last Saturday with a powerful haka performed by local school students. The event, organised by the Two Rivers Community Trust, also included a hangi, weaving lessons, art displays and an assortment of other activities that the community trust said really lived up to its mission statement of creating a resilient community where people belong, contribute and flourish. It was the trust’s second Matariki celebration. Given its success, it is unlikely to be the last. See the story on page 6.

Good news behind growth of Seeds  by Mike Isle

A lawyer who shares a widely-held belief that there is perhaps too much negativity in our world has started an online platform devoted to good news stories.

P8

From virtual to reality In April this year, a new television programme aired on the UK’s BBC2 …

Steven Moe, who is a partner at Christchurch law firm Parry Field Lawyers, said that as a lawyer he met many amazing people in the community who were doing good work but didn’t have the platform to tell their stories. So, he decided to create a podcast called Seeds. “A podcast provides the platform to let people share their journeys and what they have learnt along the way. At the heart of it, the telling of stories is still

what ‘seeds’ is. Seeds look like they are dead — plant them and with the right conditions they can grow. In the same way, stories are like seeds and the people listening might just be inspired by someone else to try something new or push a boundary of what they thought was possible. “One of my goals with Seeds is to surprise the listeners each week with how different the person I interviewed is to the week before. I have spoken

with start-up owners, people with PhDs in topics like virtual reality and infectious diseases, a six-year-old on what it’s like being a child, a Rwandan refugee, someone shot in the March attacks, Sam Broughton on being mayor, a 90-year-old nun who remembers her father crying when the second world war started.

Wastewater consultation this week The council is seeking feedback from the community on the possible development of a wastewater scheme for Darfield and Kirwee. A meeting with businesses will be held at Darfield Library and Service Centre on Thursday June 217 at 1pm and a public meeting at the same location at 6pm. Darfield and Kirwee are two of the largest unsewered communities in New Zealand. In its 2017/18 Annual Plan, the council signalled that a joint working party involving representatives from Selwyn District Council, the Malvern Community Board, the Darfield and Kirwee Township Committees, Canterbur y District Health

Board and Environment Canterbury would further consider options for the possible establishment of a wastewater scheme for Darfield and Kirwee. In its 2018/28 Long Term Plan, the council also promised that the joint working party would undertake consultation on the issue. Amy Adams steps down Long-serving Selwyn MP Amy Adams has announced she will retire from politics at the 2020 election describing her decision as being “the right time for me and my family.” Ms Adams has been the member for Selwyn since 2008 and is both the finance spokesperson and the shadow attorney general, roles that she will stand down from. “I have been incredibly privileged to serve as the MP for Selwyn and a member of the National Party caucus for 12 years,” Ms Adams says. “Making the decision to step away from politics has not been an easy one, but it is the right time for me and my family, and I’m looking forward to whatever the future holds. I have every confidence in the National Party

under Simon Bridges’ leadership and their prospects for the 2020 election. My decision is purely about what is right for me and the life I want to lead going forward. “I’ve chosen to make this announcement now as, given the seniority of the positions I hold in the caucus, I felt that it was important new people have time to establish themselves in those roles as we head towards 2020. “From now until the election, I will continue to work hard as the advocate for the people of Selwyn.”

THE RECORD

Selwyn roading projects less likely to go ahead  by Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn

In my role as the MP for Selwyn, I often correspond with the NZTA making enquiries on behalf of local residents about planned safety improvements and raising concerns about parts of the roading network that are not working well. One of these areas is the intersection of SH73 and Weedons Ross Road in West Melton. I have had many people who live in West Melton and use this intersection regularly express concern about traffic flows and safety at this site, and I have contacted the NZTA numerous times about plans to improve safety at this intersection. Given the impact of the Southern Motorway extension on the surrounding roading network, I believe it is more important than ever that identified improvements to the wider roading system such as this intersection proceed. However, this looks very unlikely given that the NZTA has recently pulled funding from a further three roading projects in Selwyn, including safety improvements at the Shands/ Blakes Roads and Springs/Marshs Roads intersections. This is the second wave of cuts to roading projects in Selwyn

after the NZTA denied funding for a dozen other badly needed road safety improvements that had been recommended for funding in the 2018– 2021 National Land Transport Plan, including the SH73 — Weedons Ross Road intersection referred to above. I am deeply concerned that this decision not to fund these important safety improvements will result in more serious accidents and potentially even fatalities on our region’s roads. While the government has claimed that road safety is one of its highest priorities, it has actually cut funding to the sector. We are all paying more in fuel taxes, even those who cycle, use public transport or have electric vehicles pay more for goods and services whenever suppliers raise their prices to cover increasing fuel costs. Unfortunately, we have not seen these tax dollars allocated to the roading safety improvements that our region so badly needs. ¢

Nominations opening soon  by Mike Isle

Candidate nominations for this year’s local body elections open on July 19, however, potential candidates should start planning now suggests council. In Selwyn, elections will be held for the mayor and 11 councillors, along with five members of the Malvern Community Board. Voters will also vote for representatives on the Mid Canterbury Constituency of the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) and for members to represent the Canterbury District Health Board. Nominations for candidates open on July 19 and close on August 16. Council chief executive David Ward said Selwyn is blessed with many community-minded people who give their time generously in local clubs, sports, committees and community organisations. “Now’s the time for these community leaders to consider using their skills in local government,” he said. “Standing for local government is a great way for people to take the next step and have a meaningful say on the issues that directly affect their communities. It’s also an excellent opportunity to develop their leadership skills.” Ward said it is important that communities are supported by a diversity of representatives with the skills, abilities and training to respond to major community issues. “In Selwyn especially, we face some critical

decisions in the coming years about how we respond to our continuing growth what facilities and services are important, and how we prioritise our spending to benefit the whole district. Voting papers will be delivered in late September and voting closes on Saturday, October 12. Anyone considering becoming a candidate can find out more by downloading the candidate handbook from the council website at selwyn.govt. nz/elections. There will also be a candidate information evening on Thursday, July 4 at 7pm, at the council offices in Rolleston. Anyone thinking about standing is welcome to attend. ¢

The Pioneers of Canterbury marching club is home to many team members from across the Selwyn District that are preparing for the new season. “We are based in Templeton, and team members come from Rolleston, Darfield and beyond. We have five teams in our club ranging from four-year-olds through to 65- year-olds. There is a team for everybody, and at present, we are coming together preparing to start training for the upcoming year of competing,” says team coach Kylie Dowers. “Our club has been established for many years, and the senior and masters teams have done very well competing in the past. The seniors took out the New Zealand Championships three seasons in a row, and our masters’ team have won nationals two seasons consecutively. “The season runs from June until March, and we have around 90 members. We are seeing a massive increase in numbers and interest in the sport, which is fantastic. “It is good for people that are not able to play more physical sports like soccer,

rugby and you make lifelong friendships. Marching is intense and is a great form of exercise. “It helps with coordination and discipline, and we travel. We did well amongst our teams when we went to the New Zealand Champs last March with our under 12 grade placing in the Plate section.” The teams compete every Saturday in local competitions against five other clubs. “When you join our club, everything is provided for you when you pay your subs, including the uniforms, which are beautiful. We fundraise together, and this makes it very easy and affordable. “I have three girls age four, eleven and thirteen years old and I march as well; it is very much a family affair.” For more information contact Kylie Dowers 021 930 434 or send a message on the Pioneers of Canterbury marching teams Facebook page. ¢

Malvern meets Matariki

 by Mike Isle

For the second year in a row, Malvern has formally celebrated Matariki — the Maori new year. Kelly Maude, Two Rivers Community Trust’s events coordinator, who helped organise the celebration commented on one of the highlights of the event, a kapa haka performed by local children. “It was such a joy to see our tamariki perform kapa haka with such passion. Kapa haka instructor Matua Anton does a truly fantastic job with all the primary schools in Malvern. The artwork was stunning, and added vibrancy to the atmosphere. We have such incredible talent in our community and the kaiako (teachers) do a superb job of nurturing the creative best in their learners. There has been such a richness in learning around Matariki and tikanga Maori. “Another highlight for me was seeing our tamariki taking the lead in learning from the super cute young kapa haka leader, Marlie McCaughan of Kirwee Model School,

to the powerful haka leading from Riley Smith of Darfield Primary School and Sonny-Bill McAndrew of Glentunnel School. It was such a delight to watch parents sitting with their tamariki learning how to weave a harakeke (flax) putiputi (flower), make a bookmark, origami or woven wool star together. There were also lovely conversations about gardening with seeds being given away from Nourish in origami envelopes,” Maude said. The event also included a hangi, with a plentiful selection of pork, beef, lamb and chicken cooked in a kai cooker, served in ciabatta rolls with salads. Hot fruit crumbles, hot chocolates, and smoothies made on the popular smoothie bikes were also enjoyed. Two Rivers Community Trust would like to thank all the many contributors, schools and preschools, and volunteers that enable this event to happen. ¢

An upcoming fundraiser for Rolleston Scouts promises a new twist on an old favourite for a night of fun and frivolity.

 by Mike Isle

A second Probus Club has been formed in Rolleston after the existing club reached its membership capacity.

 Probus caters to a wide variety of activities

The new club will be called the Rolleston Central Probus Club and will bring to five the number of Probus clubs currently in Selwyn. The convenor of the Rolleston Central Probus Club Margaret Drake said the club had a steering committee with a president, secretary and membership officer all in place. “We will be working to compile an interesting and diverse programme for the coming months and expect our numbers will grow significantly,” she said. “Fellow members will be of a similar age and live in our neighbourhood so we will immediately have something in common, and we will

develop interest groups to cater for members talents and desires so that members can make the most out of their lives.” Mrs Drake said that regular meetings with friends could improve our health, both physically and mentally, keep our minds sharp and our demeanour enthusiastic. All Probus clubs in Australia and New Zealand are sponsored by a Rotary Club as part of its community service activity. The new club had the support of the Rotary Club of Lincoln. The club’s first meeting is on Tuesday, July 16 at 10am at the Rolleston Community Centre. New members are welcome. ¢

 Ethel and Bethel — the Bingo Biddies

Ethel and Bethel bring their unique brand of bingo this Saturday at the Rolleston Community Centre, helping raise enough to send the Rolleston Scout Jamboree Troop (boys and girls between 11 and 15 years old) to Mystery Creek for 11 days of adventure and experiences of a lifetime. Ethel and Bethel have become something of an institution around the Canterbury region with their fundraisers. Self-styled as a couple of old biddies who love nothing more than a few rounds of bingo with a bunch of

good folks looking for a fun-filled night out, Ethel and Bethel’s brand of bingo is coupled with humour and spontaneous performance outbursts. For the Rolleston event, they invite everyone to dress up like they are going to an old-time, good-time bingo night. There will be plenty of raffles and a cash bar at the R18 event so bring some cash too. The event starts at 7pm. Tickets, which are limited, are $25 plus booking fee and can be purchased off the Eventfinda website. ¢

Unlocking the potential in property

 by Andy Bryenton

In April this year, a new television programme aired on the UK’s BBC2, promising to be a ‘game changer’ for the renovation genre. The extra twist? Two architects would compete to create the best new design for a humdrum home in need of a new look, not in the real world but Virtual Reality. Only the winner would be constructed. It seems a bit of a future shock, but in this case, television is only catching up with what can be a useful tool in the real world. Designers, architects and even real estate agents have been quick to latch on to the benefits of VR as a medium for showing their ideas and their wares to a public who are more informed than ever. In Britain, where the show, titled Your Home Made Perfect, debuted, it’s been the law since 2016 that every building built requires collaborative 3D building information modelling. The logical next

Modern smoke alarms a lifesaver

DRIVE TO THE

CONDITIONS THIS WINTER

The smoke alarm is one of those unobtrusive little inventions, which has gone ahead and done its job admirably during the years, saving countless lives. Like any technological advancement, the time comes to change up to a newer and better model eventually. If you’re building or renovating, perhaps it’s time to throw out the old nine-volt ‘pie plate’ alarms and opt for a better safeguard. New Zealand Building Code clause F7 is all about warning systems, and smoke alarms come into this category. Clause F7 applies to new homes and all existing homes undergoing building work, and it details the need for what is called Type 1 smoke alarms. To attain Type 1 status; an alarm must be loud enough to wake a sleeping person, 75 decibels at least, or the same noise level as a freight train passing by. That is important because the sleeping brain does not register smoke, and a loud and clear alarm is the best defence against a fire that has broken out unnoticed in the night. Placement is also important, and smoke alarms should be placed either in every sleeping area or within three metres of each bedroom doorway so they can be clearly heard even with the door closed. We’re advised not to place alarms in kitchens or garages where smoke and heat are commonplace, or in areas very close to heat sources or extractor fans, such as near a heat pump or in the bathroom.

– New Builds – Renovations – Alterations

As a way to help all types of rural families have time off the farm, the Ashburton Trotting Club are hosting the Farming Families Day at the Races on Sunday, July 14 starting at 11.30am. “We saw a need last year for farmers to have the opportunity to do something inexpensive with their families before the busy calving season,” says coorganiser Craig Wiggins. “The event was a great success and very much appreciated by everyone that attended. “We have fantastic sponsors, and the feedback was amazing. There were lots of children enjoying themselves and adults were able to catch up with neighbours and friends as well as meet new people. It is a day for all types of farming families including sheep and beef, cropping, deer, pigs, dairy and any other type of farming.” Various farming businesses provide items for spot prizes on the day. “We have awesome prizes supplied and a mixture of interesting activities including skydivers, vintage cars on display, sulky races for the family and complimentary food, drinks and entertainment. There are losing tote ticket prizes so if you don’t win a race bet you can maybe win something else. “We want to lift people’s spirits with a little bit of light entertainment midwinter where they can sit around, watch some races and have some fun — no pressure.”

Getting through calving The busy time of year is here for anyone who has cows ready to calve and whether you have five cows or hundreds, this time of year can mean long hours and stressful situations. It is important to work out how we can be the best we can be, together with planning and preparation in advance for a successful season with your team. It is essential that new team members are up to date on farm policies and what to expect during calving. Hold a meeting prior to calving and decide who will do what and when. Record the plan where everyone can see it as this will reduce stress when calving is in full swing. Establish a roster and make sure everyone knows how to fill out timesheets if necessary. Thoroughly clean, disinfect and do all repairs and maintenance to your calf trailer, calf shed and feeding equipment. Lay fresh bedding in the shed and designate a sick calf area and make sure this is changed when needed. Have a pre-calving checklist and supplies ready including metabolics, electrolytes and navel spray. Keep your calving kit at the gate of the springer paddock and have a team member in charge of restocking this regularly. Make sure you have your local veterinarian’s phone number on hand for emergency situations and use it immediately when necessary as animal welfare is a priority. Remember eating

well is important and consider providing staff with crock pots, healthy snacks at the shed or cooked meals. Some people have breakfast together after milking as a way to catch up and always

watch for signs of stress amongst your team, meet regularly and talk often. For more information on what to put in your calving kit, rosters and staff wellbeing visit the DairyNZ website. ¢

Study to improve livestock production  by Mike Isle

Lincoln University PhD students are looking at using benefits from the natural environment to enhance future livestock production systems. The young team of researchers want to provide better diets and grazing environments for cattle, sheep and deer in the agricultural sector, which will help improve the animals’ lives. Lincoln University Livestock Production Professor Pablo Gregorini, who is supervising the students, says the importance of animal welfare cannot be overstated. “People who pay for meat, and would pay more, want to know the animals have a life worth living. “These students are putting in a lot of hard work to help provide farmers with nutritional and grazing management tools to enhance their livestock’s good lives as much as possible.” PhD student Konagh Garrett, who has a particular interest in nutritional ecology, is looking at how a diverse, varied diet for animals can positively affect welfare and environmental impact while maintaining or increasing animal production. She is using sheep and deer as models. One of Konagh’s fellow PhD colleagues, Matt Beck, is concerned with increasing dietary biochemical diversity for livestock. He’s working with Callaghan Innovation and Agriseeds on promoting better health and nutrition for dairy cows, sheep and deer.

Cristian Moreno is interested in the use of native vegetation for grazing beef cattle. His aim is to tackle farmers’ concerns about caring for New Zealand’s rangelands while producing natural beef cattle. Moreno has been granted research funds from the Miss EL Hellaby Indigenous Grasslands Research Trust and received support

and collaboration from the New Zealand Hereford Association. Cameron Marshall is studying a divergent genetic line for a trait in dairy cows that leads to less nitrogen in urine. ¢
