The Everything Selwyn website is aimed at becoming a comprehensive online directory of services in the Selwyn district, offering information about everything from local schools and sports teams to special interest groups and events. It will also provide practical information for those new to Selwyn and New Zealand, including information about banking, the IRD and health care. Jason Flewellen, Selwyn District Council’s community development adviser, said Everything Selwyn is an easily accessible community database for anything of interest to Selwyn
residents, those who have been here a while, as well as those brand new to the area. “The website is a go-to for the community to find out the latest information, and also let others know about their own events and services. Adding a listing is super easy and free,” Mr Flewellen said. He said the concept for the website was developed out of the research findings from the council’s Migrants and Newcomers Strategy. “It was identified that those new to the district have no single point of contact where community information is
easily and readily accessible. Migrants and newcomers and current residents will benefit from connecting more closely through the website.” Mr Flewellen said the website had been developed by council in conjunction with Selwyn’s four community care groups: Ellesmere Community Care Organisation, Lincoln and Districts Community Care, Selwyn Central Community Care and Malvern Community Care. “These groups will help promote, maintain and moderate listings as administrators of the website.” continued on page 3 …

We are celebrating. Exports of New Zealand forest products will top $6 billion for the first time this year. About half the value comes from shipments of sawn timber, paper and other processing. Unlike the dairy industry, which exports nearly all it produces, for forestry, we use a lot in New Zealand. Most of our homes are made from wood. The billion trees which the government wants to see planted over the next ten years – plus genetic and technology gains – will see an even greater role for forestry in our economy for decades into the future. Last year Community Energy Action (CEA) helped more than 900 Canterbury households stay warmer last year with curtains from their Curtain Bank, which has been operating for more than 23 years. However, CEA chief executive Caroline Shone from Kirwee said there is still plenty more houses out there that need help. She said all curtains are donated by the public and some businesses in the curtain industry, all of which would rather see their curtains recycled than end up in a landfill. “Even with the large amount of curtains donated, the demand and need to supply free curtains is still high. “Last year was the Curtain Bank’s busiest year since opening its doors in 1995. Nearly 900 homes were helped last year alone, compared to only a few in its first year. “CEA’s Curtain Bank not only provided these homes with free, recycled curtains, but in turn saved over 19,000sqm of curtain fabric ending up in a landfill.” Ms Shone said a warm, dry home is vital for good health. “Even healthy people get sick with colds and flu more often if they don’t live in a healthy home,” she said. “People with chronic health conditions may risk ending up in hospital. Summit an opportunity for Selwyn tourism
Burglaries prompt security warning
Selwyn will be hosting its first tourism summit this month.
Police are warning any Selwyn residents renting out their property online to take extra security precautions. The warning follows a spate of burglaries in Christchurch in which Police connected six burglaries to bookings made through popular accommodation websites. “The offenders are booking properties through these sites using stolen credit cards, turning up and stripping them bare, taking everything from lounge suites and bedding to whiteware,” Tactical Crime Detective Sergeant, Colin Baillie said. “There are a number of steps people can take to keep their property safe,” DS Baillie said. “These include meeting with, or having an agent meet with, renters and sighting photo identification such as a passport or driver’s licence. “Many local sites do these checks for you; however, some
large, international sites don’t offer that service. “In that case, we urge property owners to make the checks themselves and ensure renters are who they say they are.” He said that may also mean contacting the booking platform to ensure the transaction is legitimate. “You’re essentially opening your door to strangers so make sure you have the right measures in place to protect your investment. “Police are focussed on preventing crime in our communities, however, we cannot do it alone. So, if you neighbour a rental property of this type, please report any unusual activity.” Police enquiries into these latest burglaries and any links between them are ongoing.

The exhibition, which opened on Friday evening with a special gathering, features six of the nine artists who exhibited their work at the gallery’s opening in 1998. When the Selwyn Gallery opened in 1998, it was the only exhibition space outside of Christchurch available to artists in the Selwyn district. Malvern Community Arts Council chair, Philip Baldwin, said they were delighted to have the artists return for the exhibition. Mr Baldwin said the success of the gallery over the past 20 years was a credit to the team of volunteers, supported by
an arts administrator, who coordinate and man the exhibitions by artists from the local and wider community. “The support of our major sponsor Orion, the Rata Foundation, Creative Communities and the Selwyn District Council has ensured the gallery has made improvements over the years creating a specialised retail area where artist members’ works are for immediate sale.” It’s a double celebration year for the Malvern Community Arts Council, which will also mark 40 years since its establishment later this year. ¢

Lincoln Agritech takes a lead in robotic research u by Mike Isle
Worldwide, many research groups and companies are putting far-reaching research into the use and role of robots in the workplace. New Zealand is no exception. In fact, Lincoln Agritech is part of a National Science Challenge that takes a leading role, and research undertaken at Lincoln Agritech and the project partners will, in time, affect us all. In this two-part series, we talk to research head, Dr Armin Werner, to find out how. Until recently, they were the stuff of movie myth: robots and robotic devices taking over our world as in The Matrix. At the opposite end of that movie spectrum, we have Data in Star Trek that represents a fully autonomous, humanlike robot. None of the two is more likely, as in a few years robots will stepwise be integrated as essential equipment in our daily life, not only at the workplace. Lincoln Agritech’s group manager in precision agriculture, Dr Armin Werner, tells us we have nothing to fear and a lot to gain from robots in the workplace. Dr Werner and Lincoln Agritech from Lincoln University are taking a leading role in ‘Robotic Spearhead’, a $2 million project funded by the Science for Technological Innovation (SfTI) programme, with the aim of finding out how next-generation robots

can work with humans in a safe and flexible manner. “The intention is to advance the science required for a new generation of industrial robotic solutions,” said Dr Werner. “These robots can provide enormous benefits to the primary and manufacturing sectors. Applications include indoor manufacturing such as 3D-printing, which is a technology advancing amazingly fast with robotics playing a big role in servicing the 3D-printers and in the assembly of 3D-printed products, which often will be very different to serve individual expectations of customers. “Then there are applications in the outdoor sector — forestry being a prime example: it is a huge industry, but it can also be a highly dangerous one for workers, equipment and the environment. Planting and felling trees in harsh conditions, steep hills and remote areas could be done by robots in a few years. “Robots can and will take some parts of these tasks, reducing hazards and automating some of the tasks such as

assessing the specific situation of the tree to be felled, the environment around the tree, the slope, and calculating the direction the tree is to be felled,” Dr Werner predicts. New Zealand could lead the way in such development and provide the scientific knowledge and the technical solutions for such applications. “New Zealand needs affordable, flexible robots that can be cost-efficient even for small lots in manufacturing goods and can be easily adapted to new tasks. “The new knowledge and methods, the new science we want to provide with the Robotics Spearhead project, will allow such highly-adaptable and flexible robots. “Such technical possibilities could give New Zealand an advantage in entering and staying in certain markets where production of some goods could become too expensive to produce in NZ.“ Dr Werner said. “These requirements are not unique to New Zealand. Other regions in the world would appreciate such technology as well, creating options for New Zealand to export such highly-flexible and adaptable robots.” Dr Werner knows that globally he and his team are not alone, and the race toward robotic development is extremely competitive. “Other regions in the world are handling such demands with large investments in science and technology.” However, Dr Werner believes New Zealand still needs to find its own “Kiwi-specific” way, and the chances of the country taking a lead role in that

field are extremely promising. “The feedback we are getting is that industry leaders are confident we will prepare the future for new robotic solutions for new businesses many of which do not exist or are even imagined. “Our work is leading to technologies in five to eight years from now. But, we cannot tell exactly what that future will look like. What we do know, though, is that we have to prepare the scientific knowledge to enable that future.” In the second part of our series, Robotics in the Workplace, we examine the role of robots in specific industries and answer two of the more common questions regarding robots: will they be a help or hindrance, and, will they take our jobs? That is in next week’s The Record. ¢

Springston, which won the division two competition last year and this season stepped up to division one, scored the only try of the match and pinched a place in the semis with a penalty right on full-time. A try to first-five, Cameron Powell, in the first quarter of the game, played in Southbridge, gave Springston a deserved early lead. Southbridge replied with two penalties to fullback Cameron Plato to have the home side leading 6–5 lead at the halftime break. The second half was an arm wrestle, with Southbridge having the better attacking opportunities. Changes to Gypsy Week timing mooted u Article supplied by DairyNZ
Moving Day is entrenched in the dairy farming culture, but a discussion has started within the industry about whether there are less disruptive ways to move farms. For many in the dairy industry June 1, means one thing — time to move. As the new season starts around the country, thousands of share milkers pack their cows into stock trucks and move equipment and families to new farms. It is a familiar sight which sums up the traditional path of progression in New Zealand’s dairy industry. Recently, more awareness of the disruption the move can have on families, small rural communities and schools, has led to a discussion in the industry about whether there is another way. DairyNZ strategy and investment leader, Mark Paine, said a discussion

stemmed from a workshop involving people from different sectors of the industry, which focussed on improving the reputation and experience of working in dairying. Getting away from the traditional moving day was one of the issues explored. “When we dug into it, there was agreement that it is incredibly disruptive for rural communities and schools,” Mr Paine said. “Secondly, it has a fairly negative impact in terms of stock movement for locals.” Mr Paine also questioned whether the emphasis on change every June 1 causes unnecessary uncertainty in farming relationships. “It’s about trying to get the balance right between progression, which is a good thing, and continuity in the industry in terms of making sure that people stay long enough to really stick 1D Cardale St, Darfield
with the farm system, understand the particular farm they are on and have it really humming, which is really a threeyear-plus experience. “When really effective employment relationships are operating you don’t want to have the expectation of moving day bringing that to an end. “If things are going great then focus on the things that will make it go better. Don’t stop the whole thing because
there is this kind of industry expectation that it’s moving day, it’s time to move.” Mr Paine said farmers would never get away from the physical reality of having to move stock and equipment on the day itself, but he suggests phasing a family’s move to better suit children and the communities they move into. He suggested more could be made of the weeks before the new season once cows have been dried off. ¢

Gypsy Week
Cows on the move for Gypsy Day Hundreds of cows will be on the move this month for the start of the new dairy season, also known as Gypsy Week. Gypsy Week marks the changeover of the dairy seasons when farms change ownership and families move entire households, farm equipment and cattle to a new property. Cows can be moved around Gypsy Day or from May to July as they are moved on to winter feed. Care should be taken when driving on rural roads in Selwyn over winter as many cows will be moving between farms if it’s a short distance, or shifted in trucks if they need to travel further. Motorists also need to be patient. When approaching a mob of animals being moved on the road, motorists need to slow down and assess whether they can wait for the mob to reach their destination, or quietly move through the mob if it is safe to do so. Drivers should not sound the car’s horn as it may cause the animals to panic and behave unpredictably. Farmers who are droving their stock will need consent from the New Zealand Transport Agency to move cattle along State Highways, and council consent for roads with a 70km/h speed limit and other high volume roads. Cattle must be moved in mobs smaller than 400 on roads in Selwyn.
It is highly recommended that drovers wear high-visibility garments to ensure they are clearly visible from 150 metres. They should use flashing lights and temporary warning signs. Gypsy Day tips for farmers • Plan ahead — choose the most direct route to move cattle and only cross or follow the road if it is necessary. Move stock in the daytime and avoid peak driving times. Keep the stock off wellmaintained verges. If you need consent from the council for the move, apply for one at least two

The art of the winter roast u by Andy Bryenton
There’s something special about a proper roast dinner when it’s cold outside. With so many flavours, from caramelised onion through to crispy crackling, a pork roast is a local classic — and it’s made even better with the addition of sides like watercress and spiced apple sauce. There’s a lot of debate about how to create the perfect pork roast, but by following a simple recipe that’s remained unchanged (apart from the electric oven) since medieval times, even a novice can create a right royal banquet that will warm up the whole family. Not to mention providing leftovers for the next day’s lunch! You will need — 1.35kg loin of Pork, preferably free-range — larger joints are also fine, the cooking time is adjustable as we will discuss later. Four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Coarse sea salt. One red onion. One teaspoon of butter, chilled. A sprig of rosemary. One glass of white cooking wine. 500ml of veggie stock.
Bring the pork to room temperature, and slash the skin with a craft knife or scalpel — a very sharp blade is needed. Don’t go all the way through to the meat. Now massage in olive oil and salt. Those seeking a fiery taste could add cayenne pepper or a cajun rub at this point. Place the pork skin side up in a roasting pan on a bed of chopped onion rings and the whole sprig of rosemary. Preheat your oven to 220 degrees C. The calculation for cooking time is easy — 25 minutes plus a further 25 minutes per every 450 grams of pork. Our 1.35kg example takes one hour and 40 minutes. When it’s done — check the crackling for crispy texture — let the roast stand under foil in a warm oven before carving. Some
SMOKE ALARMS Save Lives chefs like to ‘smash’ the crackling and add crunchy pieces to the carved meat before smothering it in onion gravy. Team up your roast with kumara, pumpkin, roasted bulbs of garlic and jacket potatoes — you can use the red onion from under the roast to make a thick, delicious gravy by adding chilled butter, a little white wine and veggie stock.

NZ’s oldest chorus making hearts sing If you think ‘touring with the band’ is something that’s reserved for the young, then you may need to get tickets to see the latest offering from the NZ Young@Heart Chorus. The show called Younger Now will be held at The Piano Centre for Music and the Arts in Christchurch on June 9. The NZ Young@Heart Chorus, which started nearly six years ago, is made up of more than 30 singers who regularly perform smaller concerts to audiences at schools and prisons. With the aim to redefine the way people see ageing, the group chooses songs that embody the way they feel about getting older. Musical Director and founding member of the NZ Young@Heart Chorus, Chris Bevan, said the group is made up of singers all from age 70 and over, but their songs come from every era. “People think that because we are a chorus made up of all over 70s, we’re going to be singing songs from the 40s and 50s,” Mr Bevan said. p “While we love those songs, we still very much live in the modern world and also love the songs you hear on the radio. Plus the love of music is an awesome way to connect with younger generations.” The concert is being put on with the support of the Arvida Group, which is

one of the larger operators of retirement villages and aged care facilities in New Zealand. Arvida CEO, Bill McDonald, said it was exciting to be working with a group that has the same enthusiasm for changing the way people think about ageing as they do.
“Young@Heart and Arvida retirement villages have a message to tell and are focussed on keeping active, keeping fit, keeping engaged and showing the world that life truly doesn’t stop at retirement.” Chris Bevan said the chorus boosts camaraderie, promotes wellness and
gives its members a real sense of purpose. “They’re also proud to tout that research shows singing speeds up recovery in stroke victims and synchronises the singers’ heartbeats.” For more information go to nzyoungatheartchorus.org.nz. ¢

Geared up for the farm u by Andy Bryenton
The side-by-side all-purpose vehicle has filled the gap between the quad bike and the full-sized ute on Kiwi farms so well that it’s hard to imagine a world without it. Now, as a whole new farming year kicks off with Gypsy day on June 1, there’s plenty of rural folks in the market for something which is even more finely-tuned to fit that niche. Original side-by-sides came down to farming from the world of hunting, but were easily and quickly adapted to their new role. The easiest way to do this was to talk to the people using them, who universally demanded more off-thebeaten-track abilities, such as improved ride height, steeper attack angles for fording streams and tackling rugged ground and carrying capacity to take all the tools necessary for farm jobs along with you. This has been the genesis of the CFMoto U800 EPS Farm Spec — a combination of the best parts brought together to create something more than the sum of them. Like the Ford Cobra or GT40, it’s an international collaboration — though there’s probably room for some McLaren in that mix as well because this side-by-side is focussed heavily on New Zealand. This explains the weatherproof nature of the beast, with its tough, shatterproof windscreen, hefty, roofed roof cage to meet ROPS standards and tons of grip for in the mud, thanks to independent
A-arm suspension and serious fourwheel-drive capabilities, including a front diff-lock. Power still comes from CFMoto’s tried and true 800cc V-twin but is delivered to potentially all four wheels via a Canadian sourced ‘bulletproof’ CVT transmission system, getting the maximum amount of power to the ground in any situation.
MARKS AUTOMOTIVE PREBBLETON
That’s a good thing, because our farming terrain may be picturesque, but it’s in many ways tougher than Aussie’s dry and dusty outback. A front-mounted winch and plenty of ground clearance help the CFMoto U800 EPS Farm Spec get out of tight spots, while the whole package has been designed to be easy to maintain, easy to water blast clean, and simple to operate. A big, high-
capacity tipping tray with a gas assist sits in back ready to tote the tools of the trade. All in all, this is a farming companion as well-bred for its task as the ubiquitous border collie sheepdog. For those looking to start the season — and brave the winter — behind the wheel of something new, this CFMoto with plenty of grunt and nimble power steering might just be the perfect fit. ¢

Safety star rating system coming for motorbike gear
100
Selwyn motorcyclists will soon be able to check the performance of protective clothing before they buy, with the introduction of a safety star rating system. ACC has joined a range of Australian state road and road safety agencies to develop the system, which will be based on the familiar consumer five-star rating system. Dave Keilty, who heads ACC’s motorcycle injury prevention team, said safety star ratings play an important role in guiding people when they buy a car or a motorcycle helmet. “So, it makes sense to have something similar to help motorcyclists choose the right protective clothing for their needs,” Mr Keilty said. “As riders know, they have little protection in the event of a crash, which is why we push so hard about the critical importance of always wearing protective gear, with messages like ‘no skin under the chin’. The reality is that the better the quality of a rider’s helmet and protective clothing, the better their chances of avoiding injuries that can have life-long impacts. In some situations, the quality of your gear could literally be the difference between life and death. “Having impartial test results to help you make an informed choice on gear is a great step forward. The rating will also provide info on fit and comfort in heat and cold, which will hopefully help combat the tendency of some riders to take risks in warmer weather by wearing less gear because it makes them too hot.” The rating system will initially be based on the results of 12 months of testing at Deakin University in Victoria, involving the blind testing of protective clothing purchased randomly from retail outlets. “The results will be shown to manufacturers or importers before the ratings system is launched,” Mr Keilty said. “The next step will be ongoing testing so that as much gear as possible is

Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council chair, Mark Gilbert, has welcomed the initiative. “Many riders have found out the hard way that clothing price is not necessarily a good indication of the level of protection it provides them. “Giving riders more information, based on a test-based rating system, will allow them to make informed choices when they buy protective clothing, so
they choose the best option for their particular needs,” Mr Gilbert said. ¢
