Mr Guild of High Peak Station received his award for services to the deer industry and Mr Pyke was awarded his for services to the arable industry. Mr Hall has contributed to sport and tertiary education in the Canterbury region and nationally. p Garden waste days in Malvern and Ellesmere have help boost the funds of local community groups
More than 22 tonnes of green waste and 7 tonnes of scrap metal collected from Ellesmere and Malvern green waste days have now been recycled or composted. Selwyn District Council’s solid waste manager Andrew Boyd said the cleanup days were a chance for people to clean up their gardens and backyards by disposing of garden waste and scrap metal at a local collection point. “The days are a way to offer a low cost waste disposal option to help reduce
the amount of fly tipping and avoid junk building up on properties, while also supporting local community groups. “Nearly $1,500 was also raised at the two days, which will be given to the Malvern Lions and Ellesmere Heritage Park, who staffed the days.” Mr Boyd said the Malvern Lions Club plans to donate the funding they received to local sports groups while the Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust will use the funding it received to continue restoration work on the historic Carroll Cottage. ¢

Quake City, the museum’s special exhibition telling stories from the Canterbury earthquakes, closes in Cashel Mall on June 25. Acting Museum Director, Jennifer Storer, said the exhibition, designed and curated by Canterbury Museum, includes some of the objects which have defined the Canterbury earthquakes including the top of the Christchurch Cathedral spire. She said visitors to the city are still very keen to learn about the earthquakes and to understand the
impact on the Canterbury community. “We’ve welcomed more than 190,000 visitors to Quake City since opening. Based on current visitor numbers there was a very strong case to continue the exhibition elsewhere when the lease expired in Cashel Mall.” Ms Storer said the exhibition will be updated during its move to reflect the city’s rebuild which has occurred in the last few years, and will reopen in a new venue on the corner of Durham Street and Armagh Street in late August. ¢

Free Wi-Fi zones

Three free Wi-Fi zones will be operating in Selwyn soon, with one of the zones already available in Darfield.
The 70km speed zone on State Highway 73 through West Melton township has been extended to take in some of the town’s new subdivisions.
p A pedestrian refuge island has been built, which along with speed limits changes, will improve safety for pedestrians wanting to cross SH73 on the eastern outskirts of West Melton
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), which manages the state highway network, has extended the 70km zone around 250 metres further east. An NZTA spokesperson said the extension will enable safety improvements to be made. The first of those was the installation of a new pedestrian refuge island and crossing point opposite the Wilfield subdivision to the Gainsborough subdivision. “Further crossings are planned either side of the Weedons Ross Road intersection on SH73 and flush medians
will also be added on the state highway in conjunction with the crossing points.” A new walkway was recently developed from the northern end of the new Wilfield subdivision along the highway to connect to West Melton’s central township area and the West Melton Domain. “The crossing points will provide a safer crossing option for people using these footpaths,” the spokesperson said. “The pedestrian improvements being undertaken have been a collaborative effort between NZTA and Selwyn District Council, as well as private landowners and developers in the area.” ¢
p A new free Wi-Fi zone is operating around the Darfield Library
The new zones will offer free public Wi-Fi access from central facilities in Darfield, Lincoln and Tai Tapu. The Wi-Fi zones are being provided by Selwyn District Council through the Spark network and designed to be used by both locals and visitors. A council spokesperson said the WiFi zones will allow people to connect to ultra-fast broadband with usage not being time — or data-limited.
“The zone which is already operating is based at Darfield Library and extends approximately 50 metres around the library location. “A similar 50-metre free Wi-Fi zone will start operating outside Lincoln Library in June.” A third free Wi-Fi zone is planned to start operating in central Tai Tapu by the end of the year, with the site yet to be selected. ¢

Emerging speechmaker Keeping it green Selwyn Lions Club representative Naomi Scott from Ellesmere College finished runner up in the recent Lions Emerging Speech Competition held in Christchurch. Competitors were asked to give a prepared five minute speech and one minute to prepare for an impromptu speech with a set topic. First place went to Raphael Franks from Christchurch Boys High School and third place to Sarah Casey from Rangi Ruru Girls School, with head judge, Sister Leonie O’Neil, commenting on the high standard of all competitors. Selwyn Lions Club first vice-president Alison Benefield said they were delighted by Naomi’s success. She said Selwyn Lions are still looking for young people aged between 17 and 20 years of age to enter the upcoming Young

Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters and the Maori New Year is traditionally marked by the rise of Matariki in late May or June. This year it rises on June 25. As part of the celebrations Toro Pikopiko Puppets will perform its Maori rock-art puppet production, Te Rerenga — the Flight, with two public shows in Lincoln and Darfield as well as shows at Prebbleton and Darfield primary schools. The driving forces behind Toro Pikopiko Puppets are Jeffrey Addison (Ngai Tahu) and Whaitaima Te Whare (Ngati Tuwharetoa), a performance duo with 22 years of experience in creating radio and television programmes for children as well as touring interactive puppet shows both nationally and internationally. Jeffrey Addison said Te Rerenga — the Flight is an acoustic rock musical, featuring 100 ‘Flatso’ puppets inspired from ancient cave drawings made on limestone cliffs and caves around the Timaru district. “The production takes its audience back in time a thousand
years where they get fully involved helping tell the story by animating a host of rock art puppets that meet up with the bird woman while she searches for her whanau. “The production is a result of a collaboration with the staff of Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre whose aim is to increase the appreciation and awareness of indigenous rock art among the nation’s children. “We would like to thank Creative Communities Selwyn for their support in bringing the show to the district.” The public shows will be held at the Lincoln Event Centre on June 13, between noon and 1pm, while Darfield Library will host the other show on June 16 from 9.15am to 10.15am. Matariki will also be celebrated throughout the month with book displays and activities for children of all ages available at all Selwyn libraries. Four videos displaying Matariki story readings will be playing on the TV screens in libraries each week during June. ¢

Golf tournament a success u by Kent Caddick
An annual charity golf tournament held in Weedons has raised more than $10,000 for two charitable groups. The tournament, run by a group of golfing mates who come together under the banner of the Rolly Inn Golf Section, was held at the Weedons Golf Club. The Rolly Inn Golf Section holds the tournament every year and this year the funds raised are to be split between Ronald McDonald House South Island and Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. One of the organisers Dan Patrick said that this year they managed to raise $10,000, which was well up on their previous best of $6,000. “As a result we’ve been able to donate $5,000 each to Ronald McDonald House South Island, and Leukaemia & Blood
Cancer NZ,” Mr Patrick said. “We had a record 37 teams playing on the day, and the weather gods were somewhat kind to us with the some coming out around midday after a cool start. Everyone had a great day and it was no small feat getting 148 players plus 10 or so volunteers into the clubhouse and fed afterwards.” Mr Patrick said they were supported by so many local businesses on the day and the prize table had some great prizes up for grabs. “We were fortunate to have Ross Pickersgill from Rolleston and his company Accessman come on board as major sponsors this year.” ¢

Darfield’s dream run ends u by Kent Caddick
Southbridge and Rakaia will contest the Canterbury Country Combined Cup rugby final after both teams were forced to come from behind in the semi-finals on Saturday. Darfield’s dream of a place in the final ended, along with its unbeaten run this season, when it was pipped by Rakaia in the final moments of their semi-final, while Southbridge had to come from behind to beat this year’s competition surprise package Lincoln. Lincoln led Southbridge 16–6 at half time but the home side, last year’s beaten finalist, roared back into the match to push out to a 26–19 lead with time running out. Lincoln struck back with a try but the conversion was unsuccessful and Southbridge held on to win 26–24.
Darfield will be lamenting some poor handling in its loss to Rakaia which stole the match 27–20 in the final minute with a converted. After trailing early on, Darfield, with tries to Kieran Meikle and Matt Deans, led 15–14 at the break. Two early penalties had Rakaia back in front before Alex Parker forced his way over the line to even the scores up with just 10 minutes to go. However, Darfield couldn’t add to its scoring and a last minute try to Rakaia gave it a place in the final for the first time, which it will host on Sunday. ¢

Lifestyle blocks
Planning and planting an orchard Establishing an orchard on your lifestyle block can involve a good deal of work, and sometimes money, so it’s worth doing some careful planning before taking spade to soil. If you get it right, it will reward you for decades with home-grown fruit and nuts. Planning It’s important to look at the conditions you have on your property before beginning planting, because it’s easier to work with the natural patterns of your land than against them. Study air flow, water flow, orientation to the sun, and where the prevailing winds and frost come from. A slope is a great thing to have in an orchard, because it allows cold air to run downhill and provides frost-free spots at the upper end. Wet patches and very dry spots on your land are not necessarily a bad thing, you just need to put the right plants in the right places. Hazelnuts,
for example, like a good sharp winter chill, so a hollow that harbours frost is just the right place for them. Wet areas, particularly those rich in nutrients like the far end of your septic tank leach field, are great for plums. Citrus also like high nutrients but don’t like wet feet. Dry, windy areas are ideal for trees that are prone to fungal and bacterial rots, so these areas can house nectarines, peaches and walnuts. Planting and maintenance The layout of your orchard can be traditional rows or something completely different. Rows can be fine, especially if you are only growing a limited range

p Apples are a reliable tree to have in any orchard. Plant a variety of apples that a good to cook with and ones that are great to eat straight from the tree
of fruit trees, but it can create large gaps between plants, which may need a tractor for grass and weed control. Consider not using a tractor in the orchard to avoid soil compaction and reliance on fossil fuels. 0Instead consider a food forest where planting is very mixed, and is based on the best microclimate for the species involved. A minimum space of four to five metres between trees should be
allowed, and large spreading trees like walnuts should be at least 25 metres apart. Thinking about the mature height of each tree is also important. Tall trees need to be positioned so they don’t shade other trees. To minimise grass and weed growth, use heavy mulching with organic material (a mixture of lawn clippings and dry leaves is good), applied during the wettest possible conditions to enhance soil moisture retention.
THE RECORD June 7 - 2017

Lifestyle blocks
The final word on the subject of grass and weeds is don’t panic. Grasses only grow to a certain height and then fall over in autumn. As long as you clear around young trees and avoid fire hazards, they won’t do much damage to your orchard. Water conservation in the orchard is very important, especially if you don’t have a stream or bore available and are relying on rainwater.
It’s very helpful to have storage tanks located as close to the top of your slope as possible. You can also use the ancient technique of building swales, which are essentially small ditches like miniature terraces that retain water on the slope. And mulch heavily with organic matter to minimise evaporation from the soil. Always investigate what cultivars grow well in your area before planting.
For example, you may like Golden Queen peaches, but they may not do well on your property while another type of peach will thrive. Contact your local branch of the Tree Crops Association to get information on appropriate cultivars for your area and detailed advice on care for each type of tree. ¢

Lifestyle blocks
Keeping it fresh One of the benefits of living on a lifestyle block is being able to grow your own food so you can eat fresh, or have additional income with a produce stall at the gate. However, a Lincoln University expert says eating fresh presents its own challenges while for those who have gate stalls it is important for the produce to stay healthy. Professor of Toxicology, Ravi Gooneratne, says contamination of fresh produce is emerging as a major food safety challenge. “Generally, processed ready-to-eat and cold-stored meat and dairy products are considered high-risk foods for L monocytogenes bacterial infections that cause human illness in the form of listeriosis. “However, recently, several listeriosis outbreaks have been linked to fresh produce contamination around the world. “Additionally, studies have detected L monocytogenes in fresh produce samples and even in some minimally
processed vegetables.” Professor Gooneratne says the greatest risk is when fresh vegetables and fruits are consumed without being washed. “It is also important to store vegetables under a controlled low temperature that increases shelf-life and inhibits bacterial growth.” He says the incidence of foodborne outbreaks caused by contaminated fresh fruits and vegetables has increased in recent years. “Most outbreaks have been reported in the USA, Europe, Canada and to a lesser extent Australia and New Zealand.” Various types of fresh produce including cantaloupe, strawberries, mangos, leafy green vegetables, lettuce, salad mixes, sprouts, cabbage, cut celery and radishes are potential

vehicles for transmission of pathogens such as E coli and salmonella. Professor Gooneratne says there are also risks associated with fresh produce sold by street vendors. “Potatoes exposed directly to the sun can result in solanine production and consumption of foods containing solanine can result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and fever. In more severe cases, hallucinations, paralysis and even death can result. When exposed to rain and sun at more than 20°C, salmonella, E
coli or L monocytogenes will multiply to toxic levels in cauliflower.” However, he says consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is important for a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. “It is important to understand the nature of fresh produce safety challenges, contamination sources, risks to the consumer, and approaches to eliminate or reduce the level of contaminants. “Scientific understanding is rapidly evolving in this important area of food safety.” ¢

Double vision u by Andy Bryenton
The age of the station wagon is over — the era of the crossover SUV is firmly here to stay. But what does that mean if you still want the convenience of that long, flat boot space and the lower operating costs of a stretched sedan? Is there room in the new world of bigger rims and jacked up ride heights for something to truly usurp the kind of cars which took us to innumerable childhood camping holidays? Ssangyong are among those who say yes — and they’ve brought something new to the table to back up their assertion. Taking the platform of their break-out hit — the funky, compact little Tivoli — the Korean automakers have given it a tweak and a stretch, creating the new Tivoli XLV. The original combined everything the world enjoyed
in the original supermini — funky twotone paintwork, crisp retro-inspired lines, nimble handling and a low fuel bill. Now it’s been given the kind of extra boost in space which we used to see in big Commodore and Falcon sedans when they became the station wagon or estate model. This renders an impressive 720 litres of boot space, with the option for even more when the rear seats fold flat. In standard configuration that means room for five with plenty of gear — the ideal family touring machine. Dad’s old Valiant may have been twice the size, but this modern alternative packs in more comfort, more technology, and importantly a ton of safety systems

unheard of in the days of cassette tapes and tartan blanket seat covers. As well as a full suite of airbags and an electronic stability programme, electronic brake-force distribution and anti-lock brakes work together to ensure that the front and rear wheels brake proportionately according to the number of occupants and the weight of the onboard load. The economical 1.6 litre engine under the hood delivers 7.6 litres per 100km efficiency while still producing
126 horsepower — in a vehicle which is light and agile in city traffic despite its carry capacity. With the option to select a steering mode from comfortable to sporty, once you take to the highway this is no mundane people mover. Ssangyong have made a name as a clever alternative, and with the original Tivoli they made a bold statement, claiming a new sub-sector in the market. Now they’ve done it again, with a fresh twist on a popular concept. ¢

Off the beaten track u by Andy Bryenton
Adventure is rarely found inside one’s comfort zone. That’s an adage which has remained true since the time of the hardiest early explorers, and one which still holds true today. To really find the great outdoors, you need a machine that’s equal to the challenge. When it comes to motorcycles, that means sticking with a tried and true recipe. While ‘adventure’ bikes designed with road tyres and a suite of creature comforts abound for the two-wheeled traveller, the classic combination of a big, torque-delivering single pot engine, bulletproof and simple, mated to a highriding but responsive frame is still king. That’s why, after years of producing award-winning and competition beating off road bikes, Suzuki still stick to the original template when they upgrade their dr650 series. The latest generation of the big adventure bike is uncompromising as a tool for leaving civilisation behind, offering paramount reliability, agility and grunt to stomp down even the gnarliest terrain. The surprise here, then, is not that the dr650 is a consummate off-roader. The real trick is the calm, smooth road manners of the big Suzuki single-cylinder bike on tarmac. Offering the best of both worlds can sometimes be a difficult proposition, but Suzuki’s engineers have hit the nail squarely on the head thanks to years of refinement and customer feedback. A combination of plenty of power from that 644cc air cooled, single overhead cam four stroke mill and a smooth five speed gearbox means there’s plenty of down-low grunt and grip, as well as long legs for cruising. While every panel, guard, fender and component is tough to take the knocks, it’s a handsome beast as well.

Weight has been pared back, too, adding to the crisp handling characteristics of what has always been a sure-footed model. Speaking of sure footing — and long legs — there’s even an option to drastically lower the seat height on the dr650, allowing those of a less towering stature to plant their feet comfortably at traffic stops. Lighter, tighter and still the kind of machine which takes off-road punishment in its stride, the dr650 continues a long line of Suzuki offroad dominance which has seen this recipe for success imitated — but rarely beaten. With the complete package coming in well below the 10k mark in price,
there’s plenty left in the budget for all the camping and outdoor gear which this classic adventurer can haul to just about any point on the map. ¢
