Running to remember those who lost their lives in the Christchurch earthquakes and other events saw more than 1,100 people head to the hills with a positive mission. “The Run to Remember is run by Sport Canterbury. The event is a way to come together as we remember those who lost their lives in the earthquakes, as well as the hundreds of people who helped us and our city at the time,” says Darfield senior fire officer Phil Hunt. “My firefighter colleague Emma and I teamed up to represent the Darfield brigade. It was so good to see people turn up to run the course as well as support the participants. We started at Mt Vernon Farm track with a minute’s silence and a few speeches acknowledging the quakes. We made our way across to Rapaki track and ended at Hansen Park. “To me, these events also represent supporting people that went above and beyond. I wasn’t a member of the fire service when the earthquakes happened, so I missed out on the rescue work. The thing that really impressed me is everybody was affected by the earthquake if we liked it or not. People sorted their houses and cleaned up what they needed to and immediately went to help others. “This run is essentially a chance for like-minded people to pause, reflect and go for a run as we remember. Emma and I wore 18kg of gear, running and walking 10kms, in just over one hour 20 minutes. I have to say it was hot and sticky. Our firefighting equipment is awesome in a fire as keeping us cool, but it also works in reverse, and we got hotter and hotter. There was a massive sense of achievement completing the

run. There is nothing like being able to look at a hill and say you have been to the top, and you did it. You may not be the fastest, but you get an immense sense of satisfaction finishing. “There is still a lot of earthquake settlement going on, we are all a bit wary, but we are moving forward, and an overwhelming feeling came with the run for me.
“The number of people who patted us on the back and said well done and thank you was incredibly encouraging. “We have had many terrible events here in Christchurch, and the run is a very positive way to remember the people most impacted. Everyone helps and supports each other. It is a very positive thing that has come out of negative experiences.”

Covid-19 update and advice As The Record went to print, the latest information regarding Covid-19 was that the Ministry of Health had confirmed a fifth positive test in New Zealand over the weekend. “With continued vigilance, the chance of widespread community outbreak is expected to remain low,” says a Ministry of Health spokesperson. “People coming into New Zealand should check our information for travellers arriving in New Zealand, as they may be subject to border controls or asked to self-isolate. “The confirmed cases so far fit a pattern of spread primarily within families. It is a pattern identified by the World Health Organisation mission, which identified that around 80 per cent of all human to human transmission occurred in families. “The Ministry of Health is working with the broader sector to continue a strong response to the ‘stamp out’ phase of our pandemic planning
tailored to Covid-19. We are continuing to progress making it easier for health professionals who have retired or are no longer practising to return to work if needed in a pandemic. “The Medical Council has a disaster and pandemic special purpose scope of practice in place and is meeting this week to review their approach. General information on coronavirus is available on the Covid-19 (novel coronavirus) website. “We are also asking people who have visited countries or areas of concern and who have developed symptoms of fever, cough or shortness of breath to seek medical advice — phone Healthline’s dedicated Covid-19 number 0800 358 5453 or contact your GP, including phoning ahead of your visit.” ¢
New Zealand’s virtual saleyard Farmers buying and selling Angus cattle in New Zealand have a new trading option as AngusPure NZ has signed on for dedicated monthly sales with the online trading platform that is New Zealand’s virtual sale yard — bidr. Bidr will host and coordinate sales of AngusPure qualifying cattle at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of every month, starting April 7. These sales will be exclusively for cattle tagged with an AngusPure source and trace tag, and for clients of the AngusPure partner studs. “The new relationship between the two companies makes sense for both,” says bidr general manager Tania Smith. “We each have a strong point of difference and are driven by our commitment to making positive change for farmers. Restricted fire season
u by Ann van Engelen
As of midnight Wednesday, March 4 the area of Selwyn returned to a Restricted Fire Season. A permit is required to light an open-air fire. You can check if your fire will need a permit by visiting checkitsalright.nz. “Fire and Emergency NZ would like to remind the community that we are still in a period of high fire risk,” says Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Al Hutt. “Our biggest risk at the moment is the large quantity of standing crop stubble in paddocks, to this end Fire and Emergency NZ has reverted to a Restricted Fire Season while the current fire danger weather forecast allows, in order for farmers to reduce the fire risk by removing the crop stubble. “Farmers need to apply for a permit and adhere to the requirements set out on the document. At this stage, only arable farmers who need to burn crop stubble will be issued a permit and only if the weather conditions are favourable. “The risk of fire starting and spreading is still extremely high, and we advise those who need to
Rolleston Christian School reached silver status as an EnviroSchool recently an achievement accomplished, which enhances the bronze status the school gained in July 2018.
p Rolleston Christian School have gained silver status as an EnviroSchool
“There is a student-led reflection process that the students worked through with the EnviroSchools regional coordinator Andrea Taylor, and the Selwyn facilitator Matt Stanford,” says teacher Mandy Cleave. “The reflection group needed to provide evidence through discussion, classwork and a school tour that Rolleston Christian School fulfilled the silver paragraph. That included having a strong vision. The EnviroSchools guiding principles weaved through the curriculum and visible in all areas of school life. We also needed to prove we have strong connections with our community.” Through action-based inquiry, Rolleston Christian School was particularly strong in the principles of Sustainable Communities, Empowered Students and Learning for Sustainability. “While learning about ‘Food’ in 2019, the students led authentic action projects to help solve a problem or issue they discovered through their learning. These included building a greenhouse
for the school to help reduce food miles and enable organic gardening. “They rehomed rescued chickens, collected cans of food for Leeston Food Bank and re-established outdoor vegetable gardens. They improved the school recycling system, composted food waste from lunch boxes and worked towards rubbish free lunch boxes. The greenhouse and chicken coop were built from recycled trampolines. “We are exceptionally proud of our students with their understanding and depth of their answers compared to the bronze reflection. They understood the reasons behind the actions really well and very much felt they were making a positive difference to the environment and the wider community — which is why we do what we do. “We built up some beautiful community contacts, which gave the children an understanding of networking as well. We are looking forward to seeing how this year’s project goes as we build toward Green Gold.” ¢

Rolleston roading projects update Tennyson Street – temporary closure
Tennyson Street closed Tennyson Street is closed to traffic (in both directions) from 43 Tennyson Street to the Police station until late June. This change to the original timetable means that we will be able to complete the infrastructure works for the Rolleston Town Centre much sooner than initially scheduled. · A detour is in place using Byron Street, Brookside Road and Rolleston Drive. · The 820 bus stops has been moved to a temporary location on Rolleston Drive (see map). · Tennyson Street remains open to pedestrians. The project also includes temporarily extending Markham Way through to Norman Kirk Drive. This will allow for access to businesses and residences on Tennyson Street. Thanks for your patience while we carry out these major works in preparation for the new Rolleston Town Centre. We acknowledge this work will cause disruption, but speeding up the programme means the restricted access will be in place for a much shorter time.

p Pioneers senior grade team at a local marching competition
“The other grades achieved all their goals, which they set, and the year overall was very encouraging. We are heading to the New Zealand Championships in Auckland at the end of March,” says coach Kylie Dowers. “We have a big association in Canterbury, and many visiting teams from across the South Island have joined us. We travelled to Blenheim in December for the South Island champs, which was a good experience and we are very happy with our results. Our club participated at the Children’s Day event and marched in the Christchurch Christmas Parade, which hasn’t happened for a number of years. It was a lot of fun for the younger and older members.” The children in the opening grades recently received their
skill certificates for their achievements in different levels. “We have had boys join us as a sport too, and they are thoroughly enjoying it. We are encouraging more to come along next season. We begin around June/July. They are very excited to be involved as it is starting to become a mixed sport. It has the same benefits for boys and girls, including discipline, fitness, socialising and competing. “Overall it was a successful year for all the teams in Canterbury. “If you win, it is a bonus, and we are pleased our club is on track for reaching the last goal of the season at the nationals.” For more information to join the Pioneers Marching Club, call Kylie on 021 930 434. ¢

Our future needs to include more forests Forestry is the key to getting New Zealand to carbon neutral. Though trees alone can’t achieve carbon neutrality for New Zealand permanently, our forests’ ability to absorb carbon is crucial for reaching 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas reduction goals. That’s why there are incentives to plant trees, paid for by carbon emitters. That in turn is why so many New Zealand landowners are planting forests. Forests and farms are both crucial for New Zealand. Nearly a third of our log harvest is on farms. Let’s work together. p The annual Arts Heart exhibition attracts many local artists
“It is a popular exhibition that gives artists good sales opportunities. Arts Heart started 20 years ago to meet the need to promote a variety of art in our district,” says organiser Suzanne Pickford. “We now have three galleries and lots of events, with the inaugural Selwyn Arts Festival taking place last year. One of our earliest champions, local art enthusiast Rails Mackey has returned to the district with her husband Ross, and together they are back helping with the exhibition. “Amy Adams, our local MP tirelessly supports our exhibition and always attends our opening along with many locals and business owners. Many of our artists have been long-term participants including Henry Turner, who is preparing for his ninth exhibition this year, having started at 12 years of age. His work has
increased in value as he has become more well-known and he has published his own fictional, illustrated book, which will be available. “The commission is only 15 per cent, and the low entry fee of $10 for members means people can grab a bargain of various styles and media, ready to hang. Limestone sculptures and craftwork will also be available. Artists, both young and old, are encouraged to look through your drawers and search out your worthy works to sell. “Being an artist is not easy, most people need to keep up their day jobs, so it is lovely if we can support them and have a genuine work of art on our walls to enjoy.” Entries close March 29 with the opening on April 3. People leave items for children to find and place at another fairy door. It encourages them not to be afraid of the forest and big trees as they play as a family, ride their bikes and explore. “We are also building an outdoor cupboard for expired books at the library. “We help community groups like making wooden toys from recycled material for Santa to give to children in the grotto at Christmas. March 11- 2020 THE RECORD
An inspiring life — a lasting legacy u by Lockwood Smith
A funeral for a friend brings back memories. Saying goodbye to Mike Moore did just that. One was 1999 and the Battle for Seattle. As New Zealand’s International Trade Minister, I was escorted through the tear gas, weaving our way around the barricades. It was a full ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and protesters had gathered in their thousands. At the helm was new WTO Director General, the Rt Hon Mike Moore. He had just achieved the most important international role of any New Zealander in my lifetime. We were trying to launch a new trade round and Mike had me chairing one of the four working groups. We failed. Not Mike’s fault, but the Battle for Seattle, as it became known, was quite an event — subsequently made into a movie that typically bore little relationship to what really went on. The massive protests outside reflected one side of humanity — the events inside, another. In the final two days of negotiations we worked nonstop for 48 hours in what’s known as the Green Room, trying to negotiate a positive outcome. I’ve never forgotten how unhelpful the EU was, or India for that matter, and how much I missed another constructive voice such as the UK could offer. But its voice, of course, was buried under the EU.
Union leader, Ken Douglas, part of our delegation, became so worried about my well-being, that every time I emerged from the Green Room to update our team on progress, he’d bring me a fresh coffee. His thoughtfulness to someone from the opposite side of politics will stay with me forever. Their humanity sets good leaders apart. Ken Douglas had it and Mike Moore had it in spades. His was a life devoted to finding the forgotten, to empowering the underprivileged — he did it not just in New Zealand but globally. The work of the WTO has raised more millions of people out of poverty than any other organisation in human history and Mike Moore is part of that legacy. A kid from a working-class background, he grew up in Northland. His first job was in the meat works at Moerewa, but a crucial time spent at Dilworth School in Auckland had engendered in him a love of books. His reading broadened his mind and underpinned his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to global leadership. While a Labour man through and through, it was the National government under Jenny Shipley that nominated Mike for the WTO role. As Trade Minister, I was pleased to support it, but became
p Sir Lockwood Smith
more deeply involved when he needed to get the United States finally onside. He’d run a typical Mike Moore campaign, living out of a shoebox in Geneva, the home of the WTO, doing the
real hard yards. He’d captured a good proportion of the member countries to his cause, but needed the US — still a smidgen prickly over what they saw as the nuclear ships debacle.

My working relationship with the Clinton administration by this time was pretty good. They’d even given me the White House operator’s phone number — an amazing system where, if they trusted you, you could get put through to key cabinet members wherever they were across the country. Towards the end of Mike’s WTO campaign, the US Trade Ambassador called me to talk about it. I backed Mike strongly. Whether it helped, I don’t know, but Mike finally got US support and the job. While we failed in Seattle, Mike succeeded in Doha with the new Development Round launched in 2001. He also successfully brought China into the WTO. I’d been a bit involved as the first Trade Minister in the world to sign China up to the WTO. Interestingly, for two politicians from the opposite sides of the political spectrum, we’d become great friends. When I was Speaker, Mike, then Ambassador to the United States, got me up to Washington for a couple of days to work with him around the Congress on trade issues. Mike was never boring. He had a unique way with thoughts and words, and while he made absolute sense to us Kiwis, you’d occasionally see a cloud of confusion cross the face of some Member of Congress. Translation was sometimes required. Life was not a rehearsal for Mike. He lived it to the full. My head was never so sore as following evenings spent with Mike and Yvonne in Geneva or Washington. Their hospitality was
legendary and solving the world’s problems invariably required more than one bottle of red. Much has recently been written about Mike’s contribution. But I think a bit has been missed, perhaps the most important of all. And it’s this. Over the past 30 years New Zealand built a unique global trade strategy. It involved not just working with our nearest neighbours on bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), but doing things regionally as well, such as with South East Asia via ASEAN, and more recently, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) — all the while promoting progress at the WTO. But New Zealand also learnt the hard way that at times you need to move unilaterally — removing barriers to trade within our own system, as protectionism had been shown by the early 1980s to be so damaging to our own economy. I don’t think that smart global trade strategy, so crucial in helping raise New Zealand from near bankruptcy in the early 80s to number one in the world on the Global Prosperity Index in 2016, would have lasted through successive changes of government had Mike Moore not laid the foundations for a bipartisan approach to trade liberalisation here in New Zealand when he was himself Trade Minister in the 1980s. In my experience, few other countries in the world have seen the left and right of politics so consistently aligned in this critically important policy area. Traditionally, the political left has been less enamoured with trade
p The late Mike Moore
liberalisation — fearing for local jobs. But Mike’s incisive mind saw it differently, as ultimately creating more jobs. He was able to convince enough
of his colleagues of his vision for a better place for all. We owe it to Mike to continue his legacy of cross-party support for trade. ¢

Electric utility surprise
DRIVE PHONE FREE!
u by Andy Bryenton
A new species has been spotted at the Auckland Zoo but also threading its way through the narrow dockland lanes around the America’s Cup Village. Representatives will be discovered cruising around orchards and vineyards or helping out on golf courses and resorts. It’s not an exotic creature, however, but the new Goupil G4, a small, compact electric truck, which tucks into the market where that old warhorse (or war pony) the Suzuki Super Carry 1000 once dominated. With Japanese Kei-car dimensions and 135 kilometres of range on a single charge, the Goupil can be certified for road use but is equally at home on gravel or the turf. It’s silent, efficient, quick to charge and comes with three different battery options. However, that’s not the real surprise or the best thing about this small utility vehicle. While it won’t conquer the truly rough terrain, which UTV side-by-sides manage, this tiny truck is made to be modular, with many different rear-tray cargo fit-outs. That means hauling tools and equipment in a closed workplace like a vineyard, resort homestay or fruit orchard can be switched out for a power sprayer quite easily. There’s even the option for a fully refrigerated ‘backpack’ turning the G4 into a small chiller truck to take goods to the local farmers market or to be dropped off at a central processing hub. Goupil’s latest (the French company spent 15 years refining the preceding G3 into what we see today) may not have flat out speed like a Tesla, but

0800 225 483 p The tiny, innovative Goupil G4 is being brought to NZ — an all-electric mini truck with modular uses
it makes up for this with two aspects that viticulture and fruit growers may appreciate a little more. Firstly, it can carry 1,200 kilograms, and secondly, while its cab can accommodate two adults, it’s still only 1.2 metres wide. It means that you can now fit a zeroemissions small truck down narrow lanes that were only accessible to a quad before. Also, unlike many small vehicles of its kind, it can wear a number plate, even if its top speed is more suited for country byways and city neighbourhoods than the open motorway. ¢

Zealous Swiss health officials may have put an end to this year’s Geneva motor show by banning gatherings of 1,000 people or more for fears of Covid-19 infection, but the message of the event still rings out, with more of an infectious sales pitch than any virus ever had. ‘Electric is here to dominate’; that’s the word from a collection of the top exhibits at the cancelled show, which have gone on to individual releases. From an electric reimagining of the tiny, door-in-front Isetta bubble car of the postwar era, through to a sleek 1,900 horsepower monster from design house Pininfarina, all take advantage of new battery and electric motor technology, pushing and pulling the concept in new directions. Take the Pininfarina Battista, for example. Not only can it generate fighter plane acceleration (0–100kp/h in less than two seconds), it can also travel more than 300 miles to a single charge. Potentially, it could get there in less than two hours with time to spare. At the other end of the line is the new Fiat 500 all-electric city car. A relentlessly cute and stylish small vehicle, which opts for quick charging and lower speeds, but also some uber-fashionable options by the likes of Bulgari and Armani. Care to split the difference? How about the Gemera, Koenigsegg’s first even four-seater GT supercar. It’s got three
(count them) hybrid engines to achieve 400kp/h with four full-sized adults on board, all of whom, we assume, would be hanging onto the plush upholstery for dear life. A more workable merger of style, range and power come from BMW, who have revealed a stunning gold i4 prototype. Said to be a frontrunner for production models, which will grace the forecourts from next year on, there are some purists who might argue with its more outre styling choices (like that outsized
grille and a rear end that has a bit of the old Chris Bangle squareness to it). However, few can fault the quoted figures of more than 500 hp and a range of 600 kilometres. So, while the grand Geneva circus big top has shut down, the wild animals, quirky clowns and thrilling high-wire acts are still very much in evidence. Predictions that the electric future of motoring would be boring and onedimensional look like they were far off the mark. ¢
