Henry draws the things he loves from nature. He is obsessed with birds and other animals and conservation in general. His hobbies include collecting the skulls and skeletons of small creatures, and popping into the museum archives to draw from the specimens there. A whole cabinet in the family lounge is dedicated to such curiosities. Instead of family china this armoire holds treasures of a different kind including a kea skull from Temple Basin and a sea lion skull from North Dunedin. Henry hands me a whale invertebrate from Farewell Spit. It is the size of a football and sheds chalk like dust as he hands it over enthusiastically. He darts from one object to another. “I’m fascinated by the shape and form of these,” Henry says, referring to a collection of small bird skulls. “I’m fascinated with the beauty of the natural sciences.” In November of last year Henry and his mother Suzanne, a former high school biology teacher, boarded an icebreaker ship and travelled with the Heritage Expedition to the sub-antarctic. It was a trip he had dreamed about for at least three years, and had prepared for by reading everything he could about the area and its wildlife. “It was the most amazing and influential experience of my life. The water was exceedingly rough, but I loved it,” Henry exclaims.

p Fourteen-year-old West Melton artist Henry Turner gets up close and personal with penguins on his recent sub-antarctic expedition. He is passionate about nature and this shows through in his latest art works on display at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield

While on his travels Henry met and photographed many species, including Yellow-eyed penguins at Auckland and Campbell Islands and Royal Albatross and giant petrel chicks at Campbell Island. Although unable to land the boat circled around the Antipodes and Bounty Isles. As he travelled Henry did drawings and recorded his thoughts about his experiences in a journal. He shared his experiences on the Heritage Expedition website.

New Rolleston schools welcomed u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has welcomed a Government announcement confirming that two new schools will be established in Rolleston to cater for the growing population. West Rolleston Primary School will open in 2016 for students Years 1–8 and Rolleston Secondary School will open in 2017 for Year 9–13 students. Ms Adams says there has been significant population growth in Rolleston, which is expected to continue, and more schooling was needed for children and young people moving into the area. “The new schools will take pressure off neighbouring schools, particularly Clearview Primary School, Rolleston School and Lincoln High School. These two new schools are a substantial investment in Rolleston which I know the community has been eagerly awaiting,” Ms Adams said. Selwyn District Council gave the final green light at their recent monthly meeting for the Ministry of Education to

buy approximately 6.7 hectares of land for education purposes. The land was previously designated by council for Rolleston Recreation Precinct, and is part of Foster Recreation Park. The land which is situated between the Rolleston dog park and the Selwyn Aquatic Centre was never used for recreational purposes. Council consulted with the community before agreeing to sell the land. Submissions were received both for and against the siting of the new high school. Some members of the public liked the location because of its proximity to the aquatic centre, sports fields and other education sites. Other submissions noted possible traffic safety hazards, parking limitations and whether the size of land acquired was big enough for the high school’s future growth. ¢

Lifting of Fire Restrictions in Malvern, Ellesmere and Springs Wards Notice is hereby given that the previously advertised Restricted Fire Season, which extended over the Plains area of the Selwyn District, is lifted in the Ellesmere Ward, Springs Ward and Malvern Ward only (with the exception of the hill and high country areas which are permanently in a restricted fire season), as from 7am on Thursday 13 March 2014. A restricted fire season is still in place in the Selwyn Central Ward and only crop residue, fires in enclosed drums, gas fuelled barbecues and other fires if a fire permit has been issued are permitted in that ward, provided safe burning guidelines issued by the Council are followed. Fires may now be lit in the open air without a Fire Permit in the rural areas of Ellesmere Ward, Springs Ward and Malvern Ward only (with the exception of the hill and high country areas which are permanently in a restricted fire season). Restrictions may be reimposed at a later date if changed weather conditions create a potentially dangerous fire situation. All residents are requested to take care when lighting open fires in wards where this is permitted and are reminded that legal liability for costs associated in fighting an uncontrolled fire lie with the person lighting the fire. Before lighting an open fire, due attention must be given to weather conditions, adequacy of firebreaks, and the patrolling of fires until completely out, and it is requested that fires not be lit after dark. Ward maps are available on the Council’s website – www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire. Notes: 1. A permanent Restricted Fire Season remains in place for the Hill and High Country of the District. 2. Property owners are reminded that for the Department of Conservation Estate and Fire Control Areas, fire control measures are in place all year and that organisation should be contacted for a Fire Permit prior to any burning. 3. No fires maybe lit in residential areas without a Resource Consent from Environmental Canterbury. WJ Brown Principal Rural Fire Officer

Head students Kate Meder and Bruno Deans are organising the ‘Shave for a Cure’ event along with Deputy Principal Todd Adams. While Kate won’t be parting with her hair, she is doing her bit by encouraging others to either get their hair shaved off or sponsor others who are. “I want to get the school passionate about doing good for others. It’s a really good cause. We can make a massive difference,” Kate said. Kate has done her homework on this one, saying six New Zealanders a day are diagnosed with a blood cancer or related condition. The LCB receive no government funding. Bruno Deans is willing to lose his hair for the cause for a very personal reason. His shave will be witnessed by a wider audience when he appears on the TVNZ 4.30 Show on March 17 with fellow DHS students Kelly-Anne Eden and Cameron Brookes.

ROAD SAFETY DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

“I think it is a great way to support those who’ve lost their hair. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer recently so I wanted to support her,” Bruno said. Mr Adams says he supports the students fundraising endeavours, and he’s not just talk — volunteering to have his hair shaved off at the event also. “Talking to people you realise the connections you have with people who’ve had it, or know someone who has. Everyone knows someone. That’s why it’s so well supported,” Mr Adams said. The event will be held at the school hall at lunchtime on Thursday March 20 and is open to the public. Money will be raised from gold coin entry fee, sponsors and a silent auction where people can bid for the privilege of doing the shaving. Contact the school for more information about the event and sponsorship.

Representatives from the school had a catering site at Klondyke Corner near Arthur’s Pass and provided refreshments throughout the two day race. Sheffield School Principal Nick Pratt who is new to the school this year was impressed with the amount of work involved in the catering challenge and the community’s willingness to get involved. “As a new member of this community, I have to say that these efforts go well and truly beyond the norm and are highly impressive. I was blown away with both the enormity of this task and the thorough organisation that went on behind the scenes,” Mr Pratt said. Those volunteering their time had demonstrated the PEAK values of the school. “This community’s commitment to Sheffield School definitely helps set a school tone of Possibilities, Excellence, Accountability and Kindness,” he said. “Children are very perceptive and if they see the adults in their life practising what they preach then they’ll follow from that lead.” Breakfasts, lunches and dinners were sold to officials, competitors,

assistants and friends. Popular food items were BLTs, steak sandwiches and beef curry. The school had a number of sponsors who supplied products and equipment, including PGG Wrightson who provided a large marquee. ¢

service proving popular u by Kent Kaddick

Selwyn residents can keep up to date with international and local news with Selwyn Library’s free online news service. Press Display is a news stand-like database which acts as an online library for news publications across the world. People can read over 2,000 up to date newspapers and magazines from around the world in 54 languages. Selwyn Library’s digital services librarian Christine Grant said since they subscribed to Press Display they have had great feedback about this service in Selwyn. “This is partly due to the number of people we have living here from all over the world, especially from the United Kingdom. By having Press Display it means that as well as reading local news, they are able to keep up to date with what is going on back home.” She said many residents are using the database to read articles from popular newspapers including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Press and The New York Times and it isn’t always about news articles.

“People can also look at crosswords, cartoons, classified, job vacancies, death notices and read magazines — all publications appear just as they do in print versions. “The service enables Selwyn libraries to provide the public with access to a wide range of publications which people can access from home,” Mrs Grant said. “The service is also helpful for visually impaired residents as they can choose to have the news read to them by switching on the integrated radio.” Access to the database is freely available on the public access computers in each Selwyn library branch, or to library members from home via the library website, www.selwynlibrary.co.nz under the ‘online’ link. People need their library card number and pin to access the service. ¢

The Canterbury District Health Board has almost completed a survey of Darfield’s septic tank system. The CDHB is surveying septic systems in Darfield to see if they are meeting health and environmental needs. The survey, which began late last year, will allow health officials to assess the volume of sewage and wastewater being processed and will identify any health or environmental issues resulting from the operation of the septic systems. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said the survey will help establish how septic tanks are being used and maintained. “Darfield is the largest New Zealand town not fully reticulated and we’re interested to see whether the septic tank system is still meeting the town’s needs.” Selwyn District Council’s water services manager Murray England said the survey may be helpful in providing information about how residents are maintaining their septic tank systems. “Council ground water quality sampling indicates that groundwater in the Darfield-Kirwee area is typical of that seen throughout much of the Canterbury Plains.” Mr England said a Darfield and Kirwee Township Sewerage Working Party will be re-established and will look at all of the options for wastewater which include the status quo, a council managed septic tank cleaning programme or

a fully reticulated system. “However, no decisions on changes to existing arrangements will be made without full public consultation.” Dr Humphrey said poorly operated and maintained septic tanks can overflow and send contaminants into nearby surface and groundwater. “This can create a number of health risks through its effect on groundwater and recreational water can also be affected.” More than 100 households and at least 10 commercial premises have been included in the sanitary survey and results should be released sometime in March. ¢

Living the dream: planting the potager garden u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Having bought a 1.25 acre paddock my husband and I are endeavouring to live the long held dream of owning some land, living on it with our son and growing menagerie of animals and making it productive. While my husband had dreams of creating an abode akin to what he sees on his favourite television show ‘Grand Designs’, I poured the sensible bucket of cold water on that by insisting, in these post-earthquake times, of having something more straightforward and easier to keep on budget. We’ve chosen to build a four bedroom off-the-plan house for our first time build and are using a well-known building company with many years of experience. The recent spate of bad weather put a bit of a dampener on progress last week, but the contractors turned up on Saturday morning to put the roof on and were finished by mid-afternoon, so we’re back on track. The lawn and the few existing plants we have in the paddock are certainly looking thankful for the rain. After an overexcited flurry of planting in late spring when we first took over the paddock, I soon realised that I couldn’t contend with the harsh summer sun. Autumn’s arrival has inspired a focus

back to the possibilities of the garden while we wait for the house to be built. I wrote in my last ‘Living the dream’ column about how to plan a potager garden, which is a French ornate kitchen garden. This time we will look at plantings for the potager, because a French kitchen garden entails more than fruit, vegies and herbs. Unlike your plainly practical vegetable patch, with a potager garden you must think not only of purpose but of colour, fragrance and plant shape and size. Expansive plants such as corn and beans need space to grow and are better at the far end of the potager while small everyday items can be planted close to the house for ease of access when preparing meals. Tall plants can also be used as a centrepiece in plant beds, creating height. Use small plants to create a border effect on the outside of a bed. A boring bed of broccoli can be brought to life by contrasting their green colour with purple pansies. Alternate the plants in a circular shape around

a crop of larger plants, such as staked tomatoes. In the centre plant a fruit tree such as tangelo. Make sure you take into account the size your plants will grow when they reach maturity and space them accordingly. Plant combinations that work well together. Some plants can be helpful to others, such as coriander which repels aphids, and onions which detract rabbits. If a plant enjoys the shade then put it near a larger plant that will provide

it with valuable shelter. Make your garden beautiful. My potager will have a good smattering of rose bushes, and objects to give it character such as an old watering can used as a container to grow coriander and chives. Don’t forget a small table and a couple of chairs, so that you can take a well-deserved break and look admiringly out over what you have created. Bonne jardinage! ¢

Program.’There’s cheeky welcome mats, ‘Beware of the wife’, ‘I’m really glad to see you, but then I lie like a mat’, and ‘Nice underwear.’ And helpful welcome mats such as ‘Keys, wallet, cell phone.” And lastly, just plain ole silly welcome mats, such as this gem, ‘Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit. Look who’s here.’ Whichever welcome mat you choose, just remember its first impressions that leave lasting impressions. ¢

For example a simple greeting suggests a practical friendly home, whereas an ornate mat could attest to the artistic nature of the dweller within. A search on google presented a whole new world of welcome mat wonders. There were animal lover’s mats including ‘Beware of the cat’, ‘The dog and its housekeeping staff reside here’, or the more sinister ‘Ring the doorbell and run, the dog needs exercise.’ Then there was this elaborate attempt at canine humour, ‘This is not a joke. If you ever want to see these people again, bring me a 5 pound rib roast in a plain brown bag. Signed, The dog.’ What about this novella, ‘The Dog, Day 751: My captors continue to torment me with bizarre rubber squeak toys. They eat lavish meals in my presence while I am forced to subsist on dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of eventual escape… that, and the satisfaction I get from occasionally ruining some piece of furniture. I fear I may be going insane.’ If animal humour is not your thing, there’s a variety of welcome mats that endeavour to introduce visitors to the dwellers within, such as ‘Welcome to the madhouse’, ‘A lovely lady and a grumpy old man live here’, ‘Student in residence. If it’s before noon, you’re way too soon.’ Then there’s welcome mats that talk of the habits of those living inside, such as ‘Welcome. Just don’t expect too much’, and ‘A messy house is a happy house. This one is delirious.’ There’s the not-so-welcome welcome mats, ‘Go away’, ‘Oh no, not you again’, ‘Friends welcome. Relatives by appointment.’ And the mats with criminal connotations ‘Come back with a warrant’, ‘The neighbours have better stuff’, and ‘Wrong address. Nobody here by that name. Autumn or Winter?

• Balustrades

It was hard to tell whether we were in winter or autumn last week with the wind, rain and cold temperatures! The calendar certainly says March, so here are some tips for the autumn garden.

• Handrails

In the Vegetable Garden

In the Flower Garden

By now most of your summer vegetables will have done their dash and will be ready to be removed. To replace the nutrients in the garden you will need to add Compost, Blood and Bone and some Sheep Pellets. This will prepare your garden for winter vegetable planting. South-Hort stocks all of these products and are happy to give you advice on what to do.

Firstly you may have some maintenance to carry out with pruning plants that have finished their flowering for the season. This will help to keep the garden tidy as well as maintaining a nice healthy plant.

Street race for Methven Registrations have opened for the Ride Forever Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race which transforms Methven into a street racing circuit each Easter Saturday. Event co-ordinator Sue van den Heuvel said the 2014 event to be held on April 19 will be even more spectacular with the reintroduction of the Super Motard class and a new fly-over walkway for spectators. The one kilometre race is unusual within New Zealand as the circuit loops the town centre and spectators can view action from within the course perimeter, which includes Methven’s iconic Blue

Pub. The Spring Lynne circuit sees riders taking one practise run before six laps of racing where speeds of more than 200kph are reached. Last year more than 80 riders entered on 110 motorcycles ranging from classics to formula one. This year, with Motards included and strong interest already, Mrs van den Heuvel estimates more than 100 riders could turn up with 130 different bikes. p Riders take their positions at the starting grid during last year’s Ride Forever Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race in Methven

“Improvements this year include more fencing and less hay bales to boost spectator safety and the fly-over walkway will allow spectators to quickly change position without waiting for race-end,” Ms van den Heuvel said. Methven Lions, who run the race in conjunction with the Classic Action Motorcycle Sport club in Christchurch (CAMS), estimate Methven will see in excess of 5,000 spectators

with visitors in previous years coming from across New Zealand and Australia. Riders wanting more information about the event can view the CAMS website www.cams-racing.org.nz or www. mountainthunder.co.nz. Gates will open at 9am with racing going through to around 4pm. Adult spectators are $20 with children and youth (16 years and under) free. ¢

p Powered by a turbocharged Suzuki 3-cylinder, 660cc engine, this superlight Caterham 160 may look old fashioned, but it represents the cutting edge of thinking at the British sports brand’s headquarters. Make it light and fun, they reckon, and vast horsepower is not needed to add spice. Like Toyota’s new 86 the 160 is tail-happy, tiny and smile inducing. Its motor comes from a socalled ‘Kei Car’, developed in crowded Japan to ease congestion and beat road taxes.

Leave them seeing red u by Andy Bryenton

Fans of Holden’s VE ute found a lot to love about the raucous, powerful flat-decked beast. It sold well to the kind of market who have always appreciated the lessthan-subtle charisma of the Antipodean alternative to the pickup; people who enjoy AC/DC played loud, perhaps, and builders who need to haul three ladders and two bags of cement at Bathurst speeds between sites. But VE owners must be kicking themselves just a little bit right now. Because the VF is here, and it has turned up the sense of drama to eleven — right where Angus Young’s amp usually hovers. Not only has this delightfully mad Aussie’s Redline iteration belted around the Nurburgring in a blistering 8:19, it’s also packed with little tweaks and comforts which give it a gloss of civility. Inside, the dash is tastefully appointed with a Germanic level of electronics, from auto parking assist and a reversing camera to a touchscreen entertainment system with voice recognition and smart radio apps. More

leather than a certain kind of expo, as well, and comfort you would expect from a top sports car, not a workaday light commercial. That’s the theme of the VF all over — and especially under that brutish front deck of a hood. Holden are ending production of the Commodore for good in 2016, according to industry insiders, and there is a sense that the skunk works in Australia has decided to crank out a ute which is not just loud, meaty and fun, but which can dance with the best sports cars on earth and leave them breathless. There’s 530Nm of torque to play with, delivered smoothly thanks to a re-configured drivetrain, a sportier suspension setup and unquestionably the best electric power steering in its price bracket. The Gen IV motor up front may have less of a bellow with all this refinement, but it makes the Redline go like the proverbial haunted convenience. The overall verdict, both here and overseas,

Disco back in fashion

p VF Redline ute — no slouch, and it comes with enough room for all your working tools as well. The sedan model combines aspects of the traditional family car and a snarling Bathurst monster

has been that Holden have done it again. A sports car with a surprisingly low price and a surprisingly high funfactor to rival the old Monaro In fact, the VF’s conquest of the Nurburgring has been so shocking that BMW even suggested a ute-backed M3, tuned by the in-house nutters of their

M-Power division. The posited mini wellside beemer looked great on paper, and may have had a chance of snatching glory from the jaws of the Aussie beast. But it was not to be. The BMW was slated for release on April Fool’s Day — a bit of a hint that it was all a laugh. ¢

EQUESTRIAN A day in the life of a farrier u by Belinda Cullen-Reid

We asked West Melton farrier Shayne Carrick to explain what a farrier does, what he enjoys about his job and how his job has changed over the years. What is a farrier? A farrier is the person who attends to a horses feet. This can involve trimming the foot or shoeing it depending on the needs of the horse and/or owner. How long have you been a farrier and how did you learn your trade? I started farriering over 30 years ago, although I have had a few breaks along the way. I learnt my trade by working alongside other farriers. The apprenticeship takes approximately three years, although a true farrier learns daily until they retire, as there is always new technology. What’s it like working with horses? Working with horses daily is a pleasure and a privilege to me. Not just the farrier work but also the youngstock handling and specialist problem floating work I do also. All this work is rewarding when you help the horse understand what we want them to do. There is a real bonus being able to enjoy your job every day. Not everyone has this luxury

All Horse Covers & Repairs Manufacture of all canvas rugs and accessories Repairs of all horse covers and all canvas goods Drop off centre available at CRT Farm Centre, Darfield

Karen Seaton

Where do you travel to? With the shoeing side we cover the south side of Christchurch, but with the horse handling and floating problem work I cover all of New Zealand. Do you have a variety of clients? We have a very different variety of clients. We have racehorse, happy hackers or youngstock and stud stock. Then there’s the sporthorse people, this includes your three-day eventers, show jumpers, dressage horses, endurance horses and the trail riders and western pleasure. What’s your favourite part of your job? My favourite part is having a happy horse. The owner can then go and have all the fun they deserve. Isn’t that why we have our horses, to enjoy and love. What’s the least favourite part of your job? Sometimes we get to a job we should’ve been called to a lot earlier and the horse is in some discomfort. Sometimes these jobs turn into marathons and long-time projects. How has the job changed? This job has probably changed more in the last 10 years than it has in the last 200 years. Up until about 10 years ago we could only remove foot, but now we can add foot through the new products we now have available. We can bog up feet and put back foot that has broken away. We also have new products which help to keep horses more sound. What would you say to other people thinking about becoming a farrier?

Sift together into a bowl: 1¾ cups flour — sifted 1½ cups sugar 1¼ tsp soda 1 tsp salt ¹⁄³ cup cocoa – the best you can afford Add ½ cup softened butter ²⁄³ cup milk Beat for two minutes. Add a further ¹⁄³ cup milk 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla Beat for two more minutes. Pour into two 8 or 9 inch greased lined tins and bake at 175°C for 30– 40 minutes.

Kate Brunner lives with her family and an exuberant Labrador dog Artie, on a lifestyle block near Kirwee.

Test with a skewer which should be clean when stabbed into the cake. Once cooled decorate with butter icing (lots of butter beaten with icing sugar and cocoa) Another option is to put whipped cream in between the layers of cake with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or all three. On top dribble chocolate ganache over the cake (heat 90ml cream and stir in 80g chopped chocolate 70% cocoa solids until melted and smooth). Be creative and enjoy. Cooking with Betty Crocker Many moons ago we both worked shift work and how lucky was I that Doug enjoyed cooking and would leave me something delicious to eat for when I got home. I would devour my dinner in solitary splendour. I had no shame. Doug arrived in New Zealand with cookbooks and skills that saw interesting meals arriving on the table, and sometimes the walls after a particularly vigorous stirring. One book in particular fascinated me with its mad recipes, such as eggs a la goldenrod, cheese and anchovy spread, chicken a la king in buttercups, as well as some ‘how to’ info.

While investigating what a stick of butter was, I came across the ‘Special Helps’ page which encouraged me, amongst other things, to notice humorous and interesting incidents to relate to others at dinnertime, and if feeling tired to lie down on the kitchen floor with hands above the head and nod off for five minutes. Hah! The Betty Crocker I knew lived in a packet on the shelf in the shops. This Betty Crocker was a complete book covering everything including appetisers, frostings, salads and wonderful cakes. With thanks to Betty Crocker, this is the cake I’ve made the most: Real Red Devils Food Cake

Sweet retreat at Lake Coleridge

Purchase this very affordable holiday home on a tree lined cul-de-sac. What could be more appealing? Set well back from the main road on an idyllic street this property is just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of busy Christchurch, yet close enough to return if urgently needed. What would be more appealing? It has a good sized section 929m2, with mature plantings. At present the nectarine trees are laden, the garden is full of produce, and the vendor is clearly on the market to sell. There are three bedrooms with fitted robes, and a separate laundry and toilet. There is an open plan kitchen dining area, with a separate lounge that has a log burner and polished wood floor. The property dates from about the 1940’s. There is insulation in ceiling and walls and single glazed windows. All EQC work has been scoped and work completed. The vendor is a full time resident in Lake Coleridge and has looked after the property. It is time to move on, and he is realistic. This is a whole new world to be experienced. Fishing, boating and hiking to be explored right at your back door. If you have not thought of a holiday home before now is your time. Come and view. This is an affordable and a delightful property.
